What made you become a jewelry designer? My strong need to connect with people and my lack of eloquence forced me into a life of expressing myself through art. What historical figure would you have liked to design jewelry for? All of the most passionate people of their time & field: Marilyn Monroe, Sid Vicious, Pablo Picasso, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frida Kahlo, Elizabeth Taylor. How is your new collection different from your other work? Every piece I make is unique. New items this year include pearls, jade, leather and rose gold. What is the most exciting commission you have ever done? I am usually most excited about the piece I am currently working on because it is the most present for me and, honestly, I put the same amount of energy into every piece I create.

What 3 words describe your jewelry? Clean, Sexy, & One-of-a-Kind. What artists (art, music, literature, architecture, etc.) inspire you most? Gaudi, ancient art, and Lorena McKennit’s music. What historical figure would you have liked to design jewelry for? Ghandi would have loved a “shake,” for its power & simplicity. What’s your favorite restaurant in the world? Shown on front:

“This is a magical strand of one of a kind antique south sea pearls capped in platinum, studded with antique diamonds, interlaced with handmade diamond spacers, festooned with pave diamond spheres, and clasped with a fabulous European cut diamond hook and eye. This necklace actually took years to complete. It’s the only one in the world, as I will never make another one. Hundreds and hundreds of hours of painstaking labor went into its completion.” — Renee Lewis Price upon request

FRANK ANCONA

What art, music, literature, architecture, inspires you the most? The Sistine Chapel is inspiring to me, not only for the fabulous frescoes, but the incredible colors in the fabrics on the garments, since my main interest is in gemstones of color and combining the colors. I love Opera that is melodic, but listen mostly to piano violin concertos. I am great fan of Palladio’s architecture, Mediterranean architecture and the architecture of Ricardo Leggoreto. What jewelry do you wear everyday? A blue jade saddle ring. I found the stone on a trip to China. The folklore is that “one day all jade will turn blue and be the most prized of all gemstones.” I guess I got a sneak preview. Why do you love creating custom pieces? Because they are created especially for the person and become signature pieces unique to them and are cherished like talismans. What’s your favorite restaurant in the world? It’s right in my hometown of San Francisco, La Ciccia. A family owned Sardinian restaurant.

PAUL MORELLI

Designer/Friend Since 2000

What’s your greatest inspiration? Strong independent women. How do you unwind? I love to read, just read Last Train to Memphis, about Elvis... what a cool guy. I also go the gym as often as possible. What historical figure would you have liked to design jewelry for? Blondie. What 3 words describe your jewelry? Really #@*%ing awesome. Why do you love creating custom pieces? I know what I love, but applying my aesthetic to someone else’s point of view takes me on an unexpected journey that perhaps would not take place without their involvement. I simply love the idea of knowing where we begin, but not where we end. That sense of discovery is the beauty of custom creations.

What made you become a jewelry designer? My grandfather is my inspiration, he personified the American Dream. Starting life as an orphaned Russian immigrant, he came here and worked his way into the diamond industry, eventually becoming one of the largest diamond brokers of his generation in Los Angeles. I apprenticed for a Master Goldsmith and found I loved working with my hands. Creating and making beautiful, lasting pieces at a very high level really resonated with me, and still does. What’s your greatest inspiration? The Great Outdoors… nature and travel. From a single Aspen leaf to tiny details in the Taj Mahal. What designers’ clothes look great with your jewelry? Loro Piana, Bruno Cuccinelli, Michael Kors. Who would love to design jewelry for? Anyone who appreciates American Luxury Craftsmanship, the process of creation and the confidence to wear what they want.

What’s your greatest inspiration? At Fred Leighton, we are inspired by the great design periods of the past. Each period has inspirational hallmarks whether it’s the infectious romanticism of the Victorian age or the avant-garde spirit of the Art Deco movement. What 4 words best describe your jewelry? Rare, transformational, collectable & wearable. What designers’ clothes look great with your jewelry? The beauty of Fred Leighton is the breadth of our collection and its versatility. Our jewelry has been famously paired with Vivienne Westwood, Oscar de la Renta, Prada and Dries Van Noten on the Red Carpet. How is your new collection different from your other work? The Fred Leighton Collection combines the design aesthetic of the past with the finest materials and craftsmanship of today.

Designer/Friend Since 2010

What jewelry do you wear everyday? An evil eye given to me by a friend, purchased in Turkey, earrings (usually geode or rose cut diamond studs with my signature irregular bezel) and typically a pendant. (Opal cross or long agate and geode.) What’s your favorite museum? I love natural history museums. The one in NYC has a pretty great rock room. I also love the Louvre. I got to know it well while I lived in Paris. What is the most exciting commission you’ve ever done? The diamond encrusted ring that was part of the custom made dress by Jason Wu for Mrs. Obama for the second Inaugural Ball. It was an honour to be asked and it’s wonderful to know that throughout history my work will be able to be seen at the Smithsonian. Who would you love to design jewelry for? I have the most amazing clients. The Kimberly McDonald collector inspires me. She is radical without being showy, she is irreverent and beautiful. And I am extremely happy designing for her.

SUTRA JEWELS

SUTRA JEWELS

Designer/Friend Since 2013

What’s your greatest inspiration? I am mostly inspired by the gemstones themselves. There is so much beauty inside of one small piece of material that came from the earth. The possibilities to create around it then become endless. What’s your favorite travel destination? The Maldives. There is nowhere else quite like it. What historical figure would you have liked to design jewelry for? Grace Kelley. Why do you love creating custom pieces? We often make only one of a particular design, so I like to treat every piece I design as if it were custom. I sometimes envision the woman who may come to own it. However, the fun lies in making something that is a direct reflection of client and designer in one.

What would you design if it weren’t jewelry? Buildings. There is such a finite combination of precision and creativity. What designers’ clothes look great with your jewelry? It’s a wide-ranging collection and pairs with everything from the quiet elegance of Brunello Cuccinelli to the crisp modernism of Helmut Lang to the opulent splendor of Badgley Mischka. Why do you love creating custom pieces? Because the pieces have so many layers of meaning and bring us both such joy when complete. What’s your favorite restaurant in the world? I just discovered the Glen Ellen Star in Glenn Ellen, California. Wonderful and fresh farm to table food.

Color Her World as Never Before

FANCY DIAMONDS Colored diamonds are one of the earth’s rarest and most sensational wonders, as only one in 10,000 diamonds emerges from the earth with natural color. “Vivid” yellow diamonds are perennially the most sought-after, while the rarest and most valuable are saturated pinks, blues, and greens. What’s her favorite color? If you don’t see that perfect piece in our jewelry cases, let us know what you’re looking for. We’ll source it from one of the world’s top diamond houses or our network of diamond brokers and we can design something that will truly make her life more colorful.

THE FOUR C’S The Four Most Important Criteria for Choosing a Diamond

Carat:

”Carat” is the easiest characteristic to assess as it is simply the weight of a diamond. One carat is equal to .2 grams. Each carat is made up of 100 “points,” so a carat that is “50 points” is .50 carats.

1.00 ct.

2.50 ct.

4.00 ct.

6.00 ct. All sizes are approximated.

Color:

Diamonds (except “fancy” colored diamonds) are valued by “colorlessness.” Less color means higher value. The scale begins with the D (colorless) and continues through the alphabet, with increasing presence of color, to Z.

H

D

N

Z

Clarity:

Most diamonds have birthmarks called inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). The less marks a diamond has, the more valuable. Diamonds are given a clarity grade that ranges from Flawless (FL) to Imperfect (I3).

Cut:

“Cut” begins with the shape of a diamond, “round brilliant” being the most common. As a value factor, it refers to a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish. For round brilliants, the GIA rates cut from Excellent to Poor.

What made you become a designer? Our family has shared a passion for diamonds for more than a century. This enthusiasm, which has been passed down from generation-to-generation, continuously inspires us to design diamond jewelry that celebrates our extraordinary diamonds and the woman who wears them. There is nothing more exhilarating than the ability to demystify diamonds and ensure our clients are confident that they have selected the perfect Kwiat design. What 3 words describe your jewelry? Brilliant, feminine, handcrafted. How is your new collection different from your other work? Like our other collections, the new Kwiat Cobblestone collection was designed and handcrafted to be worn and adored. The smooth lines and interiors feel great against the skin. What sets this collection apart is the sleek design which gives them a very modern and sensual appeal. How is your new collection different from your other work? Our previous collection was inspired by our trips to Japan with a focus on cherry blossoms and landscapes. Our new collection was inspired by a trip to Thailand where we loved the colors and textures of the temples and palaces. What designers’ clothes look great with your jewelry? It’s not about the designer, it’s more about the person wearing it. But I like to wear it with anything ranging from Rag & Bone to Ralph Lauren to an evening gown. What is the most exciting commission you’ve ever done? A wood cuff bracelet with 18k yellow and rose gold, pearls and diamonds. It was a special piece we were asked to do for a major TV personality. We finished it with our tree of life set in the inside of the cuff to represent family and prosperity.

What’s your greatest inspiration? Trees. I am both fascinated and delighted every time I take a walk and find a perfect fallen leaf, an amorphous-shaped pod, an interesting pattern in bark. The shapes of trunks and branches are so evocative and poignant. Last time I was in Italy, we traveled to Puglia where there were thousand–year-old olive trees that had two thick trunks that were intertwined. The orchard resembled a dance floor filled with couples embracing. What artists inspire you most? Music is an integral part of my design process. I make a new playlist for every collection and it’s usually a mixture of new music and standards that have been on every playlist for years. Newer music includes Ray LaMontagne, The Shins, Beck, Arcade Fire, Amos Lee, Little Dragon and London Grammar and oldies include Stevie Wonder, The Smiths, Zero 7, Steely Dan, Bonnie Raitt, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Radiohead, Kate Bush, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. What 3 words describe your jewelry? Unique, sexy, wearable. Shown on front:
