PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

It’s September and the Cardinals are in first place. This seems almost like a rite of passage for St. Louisans, at least for the 20 years I have been fortunate enough to work and live in the St. Louis community. As fans, we should embrace it and enjoy it, but never take it for granted – few franchises in the history of sports have experienced such sustained success and support. The Cardinals have built a model franchise, one that our Club and other businesses should aspire to – Best in Class. As in baseball, the greatest asset of any related organization is its people. And the MAC is no different, staff and members alike. We are all fortunate to have the opportunity to spend time with some of the most wonderful people in our community. I encourage you to cherish and embrace those opportunities, as life can sneak up on you. While impossible to publicly recognize the passing of every member or friend of the Club, there is a family that is hurting right now that could use your prayers, or if you see them in the Club, a smile or a hug, or the sharing of a drink. Last month, Past President Mark Belew and his wife Debbie had the unfathomable task of laying to rest their daughter Stacie, who lost her battle with cancer at the age of 35. Stacie was also the sister-in-law of Past President Joel Karsten and sister to his wife Kerrie. This family has been an institution at the MAC for several decades and one of the biggest contributors and supporters to the MAC’s on-going initiatives. As MAC brothers and sisters, it’s important we support them as they grieve. Regarding Club initiatives, we are set to begin construction on the 1903 Bar at our West Clubhouse. This is one of the most exciting projects we’ve undertaken in recent memory and one that we’ve been working on for several years. This comes as a direct response to the results of our member survey conducted in 2012. The number one request was fitness upgrades at the West location, which were addressed last year. The clear number two – an adults only bar at the West Clubhouse. Named “1903” in honor of the year our Club was founded, this bar will be laced with rich woods, fine finishes, custom tables and comfortable seating to add a historical ambiance, similar to the décor at the Downtown Clubhouse. The bar includes outdoor seating capacity, with a fantastic view overlooking the West pool. This will undoubtedly become a destination choice for our members’ happy hours and events, or just a place to watch a ballgame. This presents a real game changer, as our current bar/layout does not lend itself to this kind

of enjoyment. Being completely candid, I have never once thought of going and “hanging out” at our West bar location on a Friday or Saturday evening. There are too many options and experiences that are better. But now? I can’t wait for 1903 to open, as I anticipate it will shoot to the top of my list. With two distinct clubhouses, the MAC has groups of members which primarily frequent a single location, or may never even set foot in the other clubhouse, for various reasons. With the construction of 1903, we give the most traditional of “downtown” members a great venue to visit at our West clubhouse. This is a great point to emphasize and expand upon. Conversely, for traditional “West” only members, I encourage you to come downtown for an elegant dining experience. Or request one of our newly remodeled guest rooms after a night at the ballgame or a concert. I think you’ll appreciate the experience and be pleasantly surprised with the offerings. It’s important for our entire membership to understand that each of our two clubhouses is dependent upon the success of the other – they’re not mutually exclusive. A member who never utilizes the 1903 bar can still be enriched by the construction of it – because it makes his or her membership at the Missouri Athletic Club that much more valuable. And the same thing is true for the member who never stays a night, or suggests it to an out of town guest, in one of our overnight guest rooms, as they can take pride in the investments we make to renovate and improve those rooms. While the heart of the 1903 construction is an amenity to the existing membership, in direct response to membership’s request, don’t think for a second that the completed project won’t attract new members. The secret will get out and the 1903 bar will attract and enhance what prospective members are looking for. While the Club is not incurring further debt to finance this project, there is a modest member assessment (the Club’s first in seven years) applied over the course of the project (10 months) at $50/$30/$25 per month, depending on level of membership. But there’s an easy way to have your assessment waived. For any member who successfully recruits a new member (who pays the full initiation fee) during the assessment period, that member’s remaining monthly assessment will be waived. I cannot imagine a simpler and more cost-effective incentive to alleviate one’s individual assessment – recruiting just a single member to join our prestigious Club. Ok, there’s a lot of information here and I hope you share the same excitement about this project as I do. Should anyone have questions regarding this project or want further details, please feel to contact me directly or reach out to any Board Member or management and we’ll be happy to assist. Hope to see at the Club ... and at 1903 very soon.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

As our 2014-15 fiscal year draws to a close Aug. 31, a quick look back shows we experienced nice growth in our Rooms, Catering and Membership departments for the third year in a row. Amazing what happens when we all focus our business attention toward these three buckets which are the main drivers on our way to financial success. Generating stronger ongoing cash flows in those areas puts us in a much better position heading into the new fiscal year and allows us to “catch up” on a number of deferred maintenance projects. We are making a small dent in a very long list, excited to press on and pleased with the results thus far. The last several months have been spent developing our 2015-2016 Agenda for both the operational and capital arenas. The plans have been reviewed, tweaked, debated, analyzed, criticized and even applauded. Our new committee structure provides a lot of oversight, input, expertise and a longer view that is so strong. I feel we have a very solid plan in place and have prioritized while working through multiple scenarios that we think the major majority of our members will be pleased with. Clubs are interesting. Everyone has his or her own reasons for being a part of this awesome place and that’s just 6 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2015

the bottom line. Some are here for business, some for their kids and some because their lineage goes back three generations and the MAC is just a part of their lives. Regardless of your reason please keep in mind that the MAC is also a $20,000,000 per year business employing 300 +/- families and an economic driver within our local community of businesses and vendors. So planning is essential and our responsibilities substantial. As we move enthusiastically into our new fiscal year there is already a tremendous amount of carry-over work underway. Therefore new initiatives are deferred as we complete what’s already on our very full plate. The PACE program will be ongoing throughout this fiscal year. Our staff is very busy coordinating this massive undertaking which is so long overdue. The new systems will pay for themselves and the green initiatives and the leadership role the MAC is playing in this program should make all proud. We apologize for the uncomfortable conditions on the 5th floor the last couple of months. It was clearly not a quick fix as we completely rebuilt the majority of these systems that are now humming and good to go for years to come. Groundbreaking of the West Clubhouse’s “1903” bar and outdoor patio is slated for October with an anticipated May / June opening. The plans are almost final, the permits are very close and we think you’re going to love this new space. And, remember a couple things. 1) There will be no debt as a result of this project. 2) You can eliminate your portion of the member investment by simply bringing in a new member! The reality is we think this program will encourage everyone to consider inviting another family to join them at the MAC. New member growth has huge impact on the Club

and frankly, overtime, much more important than the $50 per month investment for 10 months. So, please consider inviting someone special to join you and your family as members of the MAC. Turn to page 11 to read more about this new member experience. One other major initiative this year was the launch of the new Club website. My hats off to all of our staff who worked so hard on this project as it revolutionizes our members’ Club online experiences. Online courtbooking, dining reservations, event registration, quick links, your statement, profile and member directory elevate the MAC to new heights. Check page 13 for more details and to get signed on. The MAC app is also in the works and will be coming shortly. September is the gateway into our new fiscal year and the holiday season. Our budget, which anticipates a very minor dues increase for operational purposes, is done and there is no anticipated capital fee adjustment in light of your investment in 1903. Thanks to all for their hard work and input as we now move to “making it happen” with “The MAC on the Move.” One last ask would be to please consider holding your corporate or personal holiday parties at the MAC! A lot of businesses have already booked so call us now before space runs out! Call 314-539-4490 at West or 314-539-4470 for Downtown. As always, I’m so pleased and proud to be a part of this awesome place and thank you all for the opportunity. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

AAIM Employers’ Association Speaker Series a Success

In past months, the membership had made known its desire for a speaker series to be held at the MAC. On July 21, the Club answered these requests by hosting the first of many AAIM Employers’ Association speaker sessions. Following lunch and networking, panelists Ginger Imster of Arch Grants, Scott Steinberg of TechSavvy Global, and Brian Matthews of

Cultivation Capital joined together for a riveting discussion and Q&A session on the state of entrepreneurialism in St. Louis. Charlie Brennan, of KMOX, moderated the discussion. The next speaker series is scheduled for late September/early October, so mark your calendars now. Call Najah Fennoy at 314-539-4448 for more information.

Melenie Broyles of Etiquette St. Louis Melenie Broyles, owner of Etiquette Saint Louis, How Not 2 Act, and The Manners Partnership LLC., is an etiquette consultant who believes having good manners is more than knowing which fork to use.The Cherry Diamond sat down with her and got insider information on what she’s been up to around the Club. CD: You and your husband have been members of the Club for four years. What are some of the things you like best about the MAC? MB: We love the staff! Our family loves the dining options, the pool and the convenience. CD: How many etiquette classes do you hold at the MAC per year? MB: I hold at least three sets of Children’s Etiquette Classes at the club for members children. I also hold my children’s classes for my customers at the club. This is offered 3 times per year as well. My classes are offered on Friday nights and allow parents to dine at the club. We offer them in the fall, beginning in November and in the spring in April. Our summer options are all offered in June. Good manners and excellent service should be synonymous with The Missouri Athletic Club and conducting our manners program here simply helps consumers connect the two. CD: You are known for bringing in a lot of outside business to the Club. What are some of the largest events you host? MB: I hold all of my cotillion dinners and corporate etiquette dinners at the club. I know my customers will have fantastic food, service beyond expectations and consider the evening an experience to remember. My guests continually ask me about membership and I know several have inquired about membership. My events range from 50 guests to 300 or more. Corporate events typically include formal dining and instruction ranging including professionalism, networking, business dining, impression management, leadership and more. The cotillion or children’s programs typically involve a formal 5 course dinner and dancing with an instructor. The events are so much fun and get great feedback. It is important that our kids and professionals see fine dining and excellence at these events. It sets the bar for behavior and future events in their life. CD: What are some of your thoughts on how other members can recruit new members to the Club? MB: I think the best way to recruit new members is by inviting guests to the club. When others taste the delicious menu, meet the fantastic staff and are able to enjoy the features of the club it becomes real and not simply something they have heard about.

Building on a storied past ... with an eye on the future

New Bar and Outdoor Patio to Open in 2016 at MAC West In 2012, a survey of the membership reported that members wanted an adults only space at the West Clubhouse. Construction of a new adult bar and renovation of the lobby at the West Clubhouse will begin in September 2015 with the goal of being completed by June 2016. The launch of this project is a result of 2-3 years of planning and deliberation with several different Boards of Governors in response to the members’ request. F The bar and Dining Room will be named “1903” after the year the MAC was founded. F Rich wood, fine finishes, custom tables and comfortable seating will add historical ambiance to “1903” in a manner similar to the décor at the Downtown Clubhouse. F The bar will include an outdoor patio overlooking the pool. F Excluding the patio, the bar will encompass approximately 1,600 square feet. F The West Clubhouse will remain open and fully functioning during construction. F The dress code for 1903 will be “club casual.”

Borealis 2013 Willamette Valley White Table Wine

Aroma: The aroma practically covers the full fruit spectrum with notes of peach, yellow apple, pineapple and with bright citrus popping out, accented with whiffs of cut hay and fresh flowers. Flavor: On the palate it starts with a soft, slightly sweet expression of ripe fruit of peach and pear with a crisp acid balance and citrus zing, which evolves to a delicious long, crisp finish of grapefruit and lime.

Franklin Tate Estates Margaret River Cabernet Merlot

Aroma: This wine is a classic varietal example of Margaret River Cabernet, displaying some leafy edges with bright cassis berry fruit. The Merlot contributes plumy richness to the nose, with hints of spicy vanilla oak. Flavor: The palate of this wine is softly textured and elegant. The Merlot contributes to the structure with soft mouth filling tannins. Complex aromas lead onto the palate, resulting in a flavorful, balanced wine with a spicy oak finish.

Good Sports

The MAC Offers One of the Most Diverse Junior Athletics Programs in Town The benefits of youth sports are undisputed. Beyond the obvious health and fitness payoff of an active lifestyle, numerous studies have found social, academic and even long-term career benefits for kids who play sports. And with appropriate coaching, the experience can teach children valuable life lessons in teamwork, perseverance and leadership, as well as increasing self-confidence.

35 million kids play organized sports each year.

So why the MAC for your junior athlete? F In recent years, the MAC has gained a reputation for offering one of the best junior tennis programs in the area, with several of its players going on to play at the college level and receive college scholarships. F The Club boasts one of the largest swim and dive programs, and this past summer, helped nearly 300 kids improve their skills in the water. F The Club is home to one of the few junior squash programs in the region, a perfect way for new players to learn the sport. F MAC Pros are not only skilled in their respective sport (many have played at the college and professional level) but also have experience in coaching and teaching young players. F Whether your child plays on a school team, in a competitive league or just wants to pick up an active hobby, the MAC offers a range of programs to meet their goals, all in a fun and supportive atmosphere. 16 F Cherry Diamond F SEPTEMBER 2015

Training & Conditioning The MAC goes beyond sport-specific skills to help all young athletes improve their overall strength and fitness, building the foundation for lifelong health. Studies have shown time and again that children who are physically active, whether through sports or individual fitness, are more likely to stay active into their teen years and adulthood. Both the Downtown and West Clubhouses offer a diverse staff of personal trainers equipped to serve not only adult members but also teens. Speed & Agility Clinics: High school athletes can improve their eye-hand coordination, footwork, lateral speed, explosive movement and rotational strength with weekly clinics at the West Clubhouse. Held at 4:30 p.m. on Tues-

days, these classes cost $15 per session. Personal Training: If your teen uses the fitness facilities, make sure they are working out safely and effectively by setting up a session or ongoing appointment with one of the Club’s certified personal trainers. Or, make fitness a family affair by booking a small-group session. Team Training: Bring your team to the MAC for off-season training, with eight weeks of weekly sessions designed to help young athletes stay fit, improve endurance and performance and reduce the risk of injury. A number of area teams have already taken advantage of this program, and training can be adapted for nearly all sports.

Group Lessons, Camps & Clinics Group Lessons & Leagues: Group lessons and clinics are a great way for junior athletes to hone their skills while meeting new friends and practicing good sportsmanship. Now’s the time to register for the 2015-2016 Junior Tennis programs, with classes for ages five and up at all skill levels. The MAC’s experienced tennis pros can get your child off on the right foot with the USTA Quick Start program and keep them improving and enjoying the game through the MAC’s Performance Program for intermediate and advanced junior tennis players. Register online through the new MAC website! Call Director of Junior Tennis, Kenny Powell, for more information at 314-539-4403. Squash Clinics: The 2015-2016 squash season will be a busy one. The junior program is flourishing with over 50 juniors seeking to actively participate in clinics, private lessons and camps. This will be the first year the Elite Squash Program and High Performance programs have been run, tying in 30 minutes of squash-specific fitness with an MAC fitness trainer followed by one hour of squash. These programs are for the top juniors in their age groups and players really looking to take their games to the next level. There will be three junior tournaments held in St. Louis this season allowing everyone to play some competitive matches and ranking points. The adult program is also booming with over 135 active players. The squash department will be offering clinics for all levels in both singles and doubles (ladies and men) throughout the season. Please see the website for dates and times. This season will also debut a $20,000 SDA Men’s Pro Doubles event as well as a $5,000 Ladies Invitational Singles. This will allow all of our adults and juniors to be exposed to the highest level of Men’s Doubles and Ladies Singles in the world and will appeal to all areas of the program. Please contact Adam Bews at abews@mac-stl.org for more information. Camps: The MAC hosts a variety of one-day and weeklong sports camps, held over school breaks. These programs are a great way to introduce a child to a new sport or improve their skills – and best of all, they are fun! The MAC’s 2015 summer camps experienced record turnout, so be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming Holiday Sports Camp, to be offered daily Dec. 21-23 and Dec. 29-31. All-day or half-day options are available, making it easy to fit in any schedule.

Private Lessons & Coaching Help your child take their skills to the next level with one-on-one time with a MAC Pro. Private lessons are available in a variety of sports, including: F Tennis F Squash F Racquetball F Volleyball F Basketball F Swimming/Diving F Fencing F Self-Defense/Martial Arts In most cases, private coaching can assist with skill development as well as giving kids the mental techniques and strategies to focus and excel in game-time and competitive situations.

MAC Hosts Tennis Program for Ferguson Middle School Club The Missouri Athletic Club West, through Mr. Kenneth Powell, hosted a tennis program on July 20. The program was a collaboration between The Missouri Athletic Club, Ferguson Middle School Club, Just-Us Tennis Foundation, and The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis. The two-hour tennis clinic involved discussions on educational aspirations, goal setting, and plenty of quality tennis instruction. “We are very happy to be able to continue to use tennis as a bridge to teach life skills,” said Powell. “Self confidence, integrity, discipline, and hard work are all life skills learned through tennis.” This collaboration is a step in the right direction.

ABOVE LEFT: John Salter (left) presents the check to Sam Hopemeier. ABOVE RIGHT: Mary Stinnett, Classroom Director; Chep Hurth, Board of Directors; and Rossana Sullivan, Parent Teacher from the Maren Fund.

At its July 17 meeting, the Forever Young Club was pleased to host the presentation of a check for $2,829 to the MAC Charitable Society for Children (CSC), the proceeds of a June 11 performance of the satirical comedy troupe, The Courthouse Steps, at MAC Downtown. The event was made possible by Past Governor, John and Marie Salter, who offered The Courthouse Steps show they won at an auction to the MAC for use as a fund raiser. Expressing great thanks for their generosity, Salter explained that $2,829 is a combination of ticket sales plus additional donations by the audience. In accepting the check, MAC CSC chair and FYC member Sam Hopmeier introduced representatives of three local charities serving children that will receive funding through this project: Sweet Babies provides clothing and other baby necessities, Maren Fund assists children in the learning process, and Coat-a-Kid provides new coats, hats and gloves. The representatives described the work done by each of the agencies and spoke with gratitude for the support. Both John Salter and Sam Hopmeier said success of the Courthouse Steps event reflects MAC members’ willingness to stretch in support of the Charitable Society for Children. To put a point on it, a gift was made at the FYC meeting to bring the gift up to an even $3,000.
