LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT anuary was quite a month, as we embarked on the 121st year of our great Club! I hope you were able to enjoy your Club. On Jan. 5, 2024, the annual MAC Hermann Trophy Banquet was held at the Downtown Clubhouse. This award honors the best collegiate soccer players in the United States. It is a big deal, and we are lucky as a Club to be able to host it. The night was a huge success as usual. All the award finalists, their coaches, families and fans were present at the MAC for this great night. Special thanks go to Past Governor Greg and Annie Beekman for continuing to Co-Chair this important Club (and St. Louis) event. Thanks also to the MAC staff/team for all their hard work. It was an extraordinary night for all. I also want to thank the Hermann family, who lend their name and their support to this national celebration of collegiate soccer here at the MAC. Representatives from the Hermann family joined us at the event, which was great to see. We as a Club should continue to find ways to make this event bigger and better; soccer is only increasing in popularity, as we all know, particularly in the long-time United States headquarters for soccer, St. Louis. On Jan. 11, 2024, our Board of Governors held its annual Officer Election from among our “Junior” class of Governors. The new MAC officers are as follows: Jodi Petersen – President-Elect; Tom Dankenbring – First Vice President-Elect; Jeff Wehmer – Second Vice President-Elect; Gary Sextro – Secretary-Elect; Tim Maynard – Treasurer-Elect. They will take office in May 2024. The other Governors and I are thankful these leaders have served and led the Club into the upcoming year. Serving our Club and its great members is an extremely worthwhile endeavor, even when faced with challenges. Officer election night this year ended with a wonderful celebration on the Downtown Clubhouse’s 4th Floor to honor our Club leaders, past, present and future. It was wonderful to have so many Past Presidents and Past Governors with us that night to celebrate. I also want to note here how much I appreciate the current Officers and my Board classmates. They have all been incredible in their service to the MAC and its members. It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of our Board term; thank you all.

The GM leadership transition is about six months in, and I can report continued excellent progress. Chip Misch, COO/GM, and team strive daily to make our Club better — that is and has continued to be the charge from the Board of Governors. All members can see daily examples in real time, as to what “better” looks like at the MAC. However, one potential issue he has become increasingly vocal about is his support of the Chicago Cubs. We will need to keep an eye on this (I am on it)! But beyond that issue, we are in very capable hands. Nearly six months into our fiscal year, our Club is performing well in all respects. Looking ahead, I hope you have signed up to attend the President’s Gala on Feb. 10, 2024. It should be a wonderful celebration for our Club in this new year, and I look forward to seeing you all there! I am confident that Chip and his team will make this a unique and memorable night (at Chip’s first Gala). Many members have urged that we need to continue to have significant, formal events, so I am glad the Club can provide this. Please plan to attend! We are also beginning our journey to transform the Board of Governors Room spaces and adjacent rooms in the Downtown Clubhouse on the 6th floor. This project is long overdue and has been focused on by our Board class since our first year serving on the Board. The goal is to have a first-rate space for our Club leaders to meet and excellent private dining and meeting spaces for all members to utilize and enjoy, including business meetings. This will also involve engaging current and former governors who love the 6th Floor spaces, recognize their significance, and know how important it is to contribute to this project. This project will be exciting and essential for our historic Club and its members. Finally, as we celebrate our tradition of athletics this month in the Cherry Diamond, I offer my sincere congratulations to the great athletes featured in the following pages. See you around the Club!

Neal F. Perryman, President Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

L

ast month’s Cherry Diamond issue highlighting our Club’s athletic heritage and the exceptional team leading the next era of our great Club was very well received! As noted, we will continue to feature the many offerings at the MAC in future issues – enjoy. My early months at the Missouri Athletic Club continue to present many “firsts” at the Club and over the past few weeks. I thoroughly enjoyed the MAC Hermann Trophy Award dinner, presented to top female and male college soccer athletes. Congratulations to Onyi Echegini from Florida State, Ousmane Sylla from Clemson, and all finalists deserving of this incredible award! We also hosted the Jack Buck Sports Awards in early December, honoring a highly deserving group of local sports legends making an impact nationally! Additionally, the MAC hosted the 64th Annual St. Louis Baseball Writers Dinner, honoring a host of St. Louis Cardinal players — what an incredible month! Please join me in congratulating our recently promoted Executive Chef, Jessica Madsen. “Chef Jess” joined the MAC in 2022 and is a graduate of Arizona Christian University, where she earned a degree in Social Work and played basketball. She followed that up with an associate degree in culinary arts and Restaurant Management at L’Ecole Culinaire in St. Louis. Jessica has worked with local restauranteurs and chefs at Eleven Eleven Mississippi Group, Niche Food Group, and most recently Annie Gunn’s. Chef Jess is married to Steve, Head Golf Professional at Pevely Farms Golf Club in Eureka, and they have three beautiful children, Kenzie (9), and twin boys, Jaxon and Greysen, born this December.

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

The Downtown Clubhouse is always under the watchful eye of Joe Dietz! Joe joined the MAC in 2006 under the leadership of Larry Thompson. All things “Downtown” flow through Joe’s most capable hands – with an ever-present willingness to serve members and guests or to cheer on the team of employees for whatever lies ahead on any given day! Joe is truly a special part of the Downtown experience and continues to lead by example in our continued progress of service at the MAC! I am particularly grateful for Joe’s support throughout my early days of settling in. February will mark the sixth month of our fiscal year, and Pam Roth will share a financial recap in the months ahead. We continue to perform favorably to budget at all levels operationally, driven by impressive member usage in athletics food and beverage. December, in particular, was a record month for the MAC! Membership activity remains strong and vibrant. The total membership count is 2,584. By the time this newsletter reaches you, new lunch and dinner menus will be in place at both Clubhouses, as well as our new wine list and by-the-glass offerings. We look forward to your feedback and trust you are enjoying the many exciting dishes prepared by our culinary professionals. Very best regards,

Donald “Chip” Misch, CCM COO/General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Building a Strong Future: The Missouri Athletic Club’s Vision and Financial Strategy he Missouri Athletic Club’s vision is to be the foremost private Club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations. To achieve this ambitious vision, the Club recognizes the importance of maintaining a robust financial foundation. In the world of private clubs, with high fixed costs, the key to success lies in building a strong balance sheet and increasing the Club’s net worth over time. In the pursuit of becoming St. Louis’s foremost private Club, the MAC acknowledges that expenses are not inherently negative. Instead, operating expenses reflect the scale of the Club’s footprint and the quality of the member experience. For a club of this caliber, where excellence is built into its mission, it is essential to invest in creating an unparalleled atmosphere for members. The Board of Governors and leadership team believes it’s important for members to understand and support the correlation between expenses and the long-term prosperity of the Club. The most successful athletic clubs across the nation share a common focus on growing their net worth. In financial comparisons recently performed with these peers, the MAC has the opportunity to be amongst the best. This entails a commitment to building strong capital plans that contribute to positive net worth over time. By strategically managing expenses, investing wisely, and leveraging capital, the Club aims to enhance its financial health, ensuring a thriving and relevant future. Looking ahead, the MAC’s leadership team is channeling its energy into new KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) for measuring and augmenting the net worth of the Club. This proactive approach underscores the commitment to financial sustainability and prudent fiscal management. By prioritizing net worth growth, the MAC

T

not only secures its financial future but also ensures the continued delivery of exceptional experiences to its members. The MAC is a member-owned and governed organization. This distinctive structure means that members directly benefit from the equity growth of the Club. As the net worth of the MAC increases through judicious financial planning and strategic investments, members can anticipate the fruition of their collective investment in the form of new and improved amenities. Whether through upgraded facilities, innovative programs, or enhanced services, the MAC is dedicated to ensuring that its members enjoy the fruits of the Club’s financial success by providing an elevated experience and lasting value for its esteemed community. In conclusion, the MAC is not just a private club; it is a community with a vision. By focusing on building a strong balance sheet, understanding the relationship between expenses and success, and prioritizing net worth growth, the MAC is laying the foundation for a prosperous future, ensuring that the Missouri Athletic Club remains a beacon of excellence in St. Louis for generations to come. Erskine Nicol (Scottish/English, 1825-1904) Flabbergasted, 1868 Oil on canvas, 28x41 inches Signed lower left with date. Missouri Athletic Club Art Committee purchased in 1956. Scottish-born Erskine Nicol made a name for himself as a painter of 19th century Irish life. He depicted realist genre scenes and character studies of Irish peasants, sometimes humorous in nature, and tackled subjects often ignored by most Victorian artists due to social pressures. Here, Nicol brings to life a vibrant scene with a gentleman bargaining with a scoundrel of those days – a bird poacher. The gentleman is clearly “flabbergasted” at the price, while others register emotions varying between shame and indignation. This composition, in subject and title, are distinctly Nicol.

Have you seen this painting? This painting hangs in a quiet corner that is great for playing cards while enjoying the art collection.

CWC MEETINGS

Military History Club Welcomes Author William Hazelgrove Thursday, Feb. 27 F 11:30 a.m. F Downtown Clubhouse On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the Military History Club turns its attention to the darkest winter of the Revolutionary War as it welcomes a Zoom presentation by William Hazelgrove, author of Morristown: The Darkest Winter of the Revolutionary War and the Plot to Kidnap George Washington. In the fall of 1779, George Washington took his 10,000 men into winter camp at Morristown, New Jersey after four long years of fighting. It would be a brutal winter of suffering, depression, starvation, betrayal, mutiny, treason, and an attempt to kidnap George Washington by the British. By the spring, only 8,000 men would be left in Morristown with less than two-thirds fit for service. Books have cemented Valley Forge as one with Omaha Beach, the Death March of Bataan, and Washington crossing the Delaware. But the winter of Valley Forge was mild in comparison to other winters. The winter of 1779 to 1780 was the worst in a century and would mark Washington’s darkest hour where he contemplated the army coming apart from lack of food and money, four years of war, desertions, mutiny, the threat of a devastating attack by the British, and incredibly, a plot to kidnap him. And yet Morristown would mark a turning point. After a long winter of suffering, he was joined by Lafayette in May who promised Washington a second fleet of French support, leading to the final defeat of the British in 1783. Join us as we explore this crucial turning point in our war for independence. To attend, register at mac-stl.org/events.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors – until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Since its inception, the Missouri Athletic Club has acquired numerous works of art that have graced the walls of the Downtown Clubhouse for decades. These beautiful, framed artworks are passed by daily as members head to the Sportsman’s Club to meet a client for lunch, to the fifth floor for a quick workout, or to the Jack Buck Grille for a drink with friends.

Art Collection Spotlight Scavenger Hunt Members now have an opportunity to take in the MAC’s extensive art collection in a new way through the Cherry Diamond’s MAC Art Collection Spotlight Scavenger Hunt. Each issue will highlight the fine art displayed across the Club through clues, with the following month revealing the previous issue’s answer and biographical details about the painting, as well as the next clue. With over 100 paintings, prints, sculptures and decorative art objects in the MAC’s collection, this Scavenger Hunt is a small peek into the beauty of the Club!

Building the Art Collection The Missouri Athletic Club’s connection to art traces back to the early 1900s, acquiring the first object that could be considered “art” in 1916. The Ball Trophy, a large bronze casting of Mercury after the original by the late Renaissance master Giovanni de Bologna, was donated by Phillip de Cateby Ball as a trophy for the three-time national winners of the mile run. The history of the Club’s art collection truly began in 1918 with the acquisition of the first oil painting, Windswept Meramec River by Tom Barnett. During a time when almost no art adorned the Club’s walls and no standing art committee, members pooled together funds to purchase the artwork. To this day, this first acquisition still hangs in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby for all to see. In 1940, the Art Committee was formally established with Jules Rombauer, Thomas Fry and Bruce Pates taking the lead. Nearly 20 works of art entered the collection in the first decade of the committee. With many early acquisitions consisting of realist and figural styles of art, the variety within the collection may not always be that apparent. However, diverse examples entered the collection in 1948 with acquisitions of Mist and Moon by St. Louis artist E.H. Wuerpel, a modern figural scene, The Art Students’ Bazaar by local artist Fred Green Carpenter, the Impressionist painting, Finishing Touches by St. Louis painter Richard Miller, and numerous others.

The Legacy Continues In 2021, Past President Thomas C. Albus reignited interest amongst members by forming a group dedicated to celebrating art at the Club. The MAC Art Society was formed, purchasing 13 artworks on behalf of the Missouri Athletic Club, from the collection of the MAC Foundation for the Arts. These works are now part of the MAC Art Collection, which today has a catalogue of over 100 different artworks of multiple mediums. The MAC Art Society is committed to discovering, preserving and promoting the Club’s beloved collection of paintings, prints and sculptures and to celebrating the rich community of arts in St. Louis. This mission is nothing new; MAC member Bruce Pates, the last surviving member of the original Art Committee, helped create the first publication of the art collection in the Cherry Diamond in 1963. This celebrated every artwork in the collection at the time with illustrations, descriptions and his personal thoughts on each work. Since that time, members and guests alike casually but carefully browse and discuss the many paintings that hang on the walls of the Art Lounge and throughout the Downtown Clubhouse. In carrying on the tradition of appreciation for local artists, the Club hosts a Featured Artist Series exhibition in the gallery space within both Clubhouse lobbies. The MAC Art Society also hosts local artists for presentations about their work. These current initiatives work to continue the enduring connection between the Club and the ongoing collection of art. THE MAC ART SOCIETY Members are invited to join the MAC Art Society and pay annual dues to help fund programmatic activities related to the group’s mission. In 2023, annual dues went towards the professional photography of all significant fine art within the Club’s collection. As a next major undertaking, the MAC Art Society would like to publish an illustrated catalogue of the fine art collection – something that has not existed since a pamphlet was produced in 1984! Members are invited to support the MAC Art Society by joining as an annual member, ordering a Barnett Bourbon when visiting the Club, purchasing a work on display in the lobby by a monthly featured artist, or helping with programmatic activities. Opportunities to sponsor ongoing collections care and conservation activities are also available. Please contact Kara Kelpe with any questions at kkelpe@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4408. OF THE GAME At the heart of the Missouri Athletic Club’s storied legacy, athleticism isn’t just a namesake – it’s a tradition dating back to the 1904 Olympic games. This feature highlights athletes who have leveraged the Club’s first-class resources to excel in their pursuits. Valentine’s Day & Chocolate

FROM COACH MAGGIE! Chocolate is historically linked with romance and love, making it a great choice for Valentine’s Day. This year, give your loved ones some dark chocolate that contains at least 72% cacao or higher. There are numerous benefits to choosing this chocolate option: F Improves metabolism: Dark chocolate has an impressive impact on how the body synthesizes fatty acids, reducing the digestion and absorption of fats and carbohydrates. F Controls appetite: Three hormones control appetite: insulin, ghrelin and leptin. Dark chocolate decreases insulin resistance and lowers levels of ghrelin, making the body feel satiated. F Enhances sense of well-being: The polyphenols in dark chocolate increase your sense of calmness and satisfaction. It contains anandamide, a type of lipid known as the “pleasure chemical.” With this lasting sense of peace and wellbeing, it decreases the compulsion to eat more in seeking comfort.

F Fat content: Dark chocolate contains three types of fat: oleic acid, stearic acid and palmitic acid. The combined effect of these fats helps lower cholesterol. F Antioxidant rich: Antioxidants help free your body of free radicals, which cause oxidative damage to cells. Eating antioxidant-rich foods like dark chocolate can help protect you from many types of cancer and signs of aging.

F Good for your heart: Eating a small amount of dark chocolate two or three times a week can help lower your blood pressure, improving blood flow and preventing the formation of blood clots.

F Vitamins and minerals: Dark chocolate contains potassium, copper, magnesium and iron. Copper and potassium help prevent stroke and cardiovascular ailments, iron protects against anemia, and magnesium helps prevent type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

F Good for your mind: Dark chocolate improves blood flow to the brain as well as the heart, improving cognitive function. The several chemical compounds it contains also have a positive effect on your mood and cognitive health.
