Wayne LaPierre:
‘We’re not extreme, we’re the mainstream!’ turning-point election is looming, the future composition of the U.S. Supreme Court and lower federal courts is on the line, the United Nations will consider an international arms trade treaty in July, and bracing for battle are four million members of the National Rifle Association whose votes may make the difference in the direction of the nation. What could be simpler? For Wayne LaPierre, who for more than two decades has been the recognized public face of the NRA, it’s another chapter in what has become a never-ending battle to defend gun rights against what often seems like formidable odds. It was no secret that the “mainstream” press was essentially “in the bag” for Barack Obama four years ago, and that remains the case today. Obama’s anti-gun supporters are working feverishly to demonize the NRA – both its leadership and its members – as extremists in an attempt to marginalize the organization. To that, LaPierre has one reaction: “We’re not extreme. We’re the mainstream.” Polling data supports that conclusion, as public support has consistently been tilting toward the right to keep and bear arms. A few weeks ago, LaPierre flew to NewYork to meet with gun owners, and in preparation, he

commissioned a Zogby poll that showed two-thirds of the public believes there are enough gun laws on the books, and they also believe the Second Amendment protects an individual civil right. By a 2:1 margin, the public supports concealed carry, and a majority also favors national concealed carry reciprocity. “We have the opportunity to be the difference, the tipping point,” he told Western Sporting Journal in an exclusive interview. “That’s why I say it is time for every Second Amendment supporter and gun owner to saddle up and ride. Be the Paul Revere and help win this election and save freedom.” Much is at stake. As president, Obama has already clearly demonstrated the direction he hopes to travel with a second term in the Oval Office. He has already appointed two of the most rabidly anti-gun justices in history to the Supreme Court with Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. A second
term could make that worse. “If he is re-elected,” LaPierre said, “he will get one, two or maybe three more appointments. The 5-4 majority we had go our way (on Heller and McDonald) will go 5-4 their way, and then 6-3 and then 7-2, and we’ll go to our graves mourning the death of the Second Amendment.” If gun owners come through, as they did in 1994 by changing the face of Congress, “there’s no doubt that gun owners and Second Amendment activists will all push and pray for pro-Second Amendment (justices) to be appointed to the Supreme Court.” UN Treaty threat That is not the only obstacle. This summer, the UN is supposed to take up international small arms control, and LaPierre vowed the NRA will marshal its forces to stop that. He visited the U.N. last summer to testify, calling it an “out-of-body experience” that had him facing off with rep-

resentatives from the most repressive governments on the globe. “I’m standing there,” he said with heavy sarcasm, “in front of all these ‘bastions of freedom’ like Syria and Iran and North Korea and Cuba and China, understanding that they want to come into our country and infect our freedoms literally like a germ and dumb our freedoms down to a lesser standard. That’s their intent. “What I told them,” he recalled, “when I looked them right in the eye…about American freedom and they had no authority to mess with it, no way, no how.” “We are going to stand in their way,” he said. “We are going to block them. We are going to…protect American freedom.” LaPierre noted that the entire history of the United Nations has demonstrated that they are not an organization for individual freedom. “They’re a club of governments,” he continued on page 14

said. “Most of the killing in the past 50 years has been done by governments in that club. Not one of those governments except for the United States (has) a Bill of Rights. Our sovereign is the individual. Theirs is the government.” LaPierre said the U.N. has been working on a small arms agreement for several years. They have, he observed, “already picked off most of Africa, most of Europe, most of South America.” “They’re zeroing in on the last bastion of freedom,” he cautioned, “the United States. There are a lot of ways they can do it, by treaty, by international agreements; and they are backed by hundreds of millions of dollars.” Alas, he acknowledged, some people “still don’t process this as a threat.” “We’ve got to fight this U.N. threat with everything we’ve got,” he said,“because they are dead serious about this.” This, he explained, is another manifestation of the Obama administration. “There is,” LaPierre asserted, “a
freedom-eating disease embedded in the Obama administration. They believe that in order to be a ‘citizen of the world,’ somehow American culture needs to conform to some worldwide standard. That is a critical step down the path toward losing our American way of life. We cannot bend to that will. “I don’t want the USA to look like the rest of the world,” he said.“I want the rest of the planet to look more like the USA.” Fast & Furious One indication about how far the Obama administration might go to further its ends, he suggested, has been demonstrated by the Operation Fast and Furious scandal. That operation allowed some 2,000 guns to be illegally trafficked to Mexican drug cartels, and subsequently those guns began showing up at crime scenes. Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have used this as an excuse to push for tougher gun laws in this country. “What has become very apparent,”
14 Northwest Sportsman & Western Shooting Journal NRA SHOW DOUBLE ISSUE 2012
LaPierre said, “is that they concocted a scheme to make what was not true appear to be true in order to seek political advantage and more gun laws.” Early in the Obama term, the administration began claiming that Mexico was awash in American guns. LaPierre believes that in order to prove that, Fast and Furious was launched, not merely to track down crime kingpins in Mexico, but to prove that cartels were getting guns from the United States. “They needed to sell that lie,” he contended, “in order to create the need for more gun laws for their political agenda.” LaPierre said that it is clear the American public was never supposed to know about Fast and Furious. Secrecy became impossible with the murder of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry, and the revelation that two guns found at the crime scene were directly linked to one of the chief Fast and Furious suspects. continued on page 94

NRA GATHERS IN ST. LOUIS! ens of thousands of National Rifle Association members are expected to descend on the Gateway City for the 141st annual NRA meetings and exhibits, at the America’s Center Convention Complex. The last time that the NRA visited St. Louis was in April 2007, and this year’s event promises to be just as big, perhaps bigger, with appearances by national commentator Glenn Beck and comedian Larry the Cable Guy. More than 500 exhibitors will pack the hall, including Winchester, Remington, Weatherby, Ruger, Colt, Smith & Wesson, Kimber, Taurus, Mossberg, Benelli, Beretta, Glock, Marlin, Savage and many others. This year’s exhibits cover some 340,000 square feet, and when you’re through walking the aisles, check out the educational seminars and other programs unfolding over the big weekend. There will be opportunities to visit with manufacturer’s representatives, knife makers, hunting guides and outfitters. You might run into NRA President David Keane, Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox, executive director of the Institute for Legislative Action strolling the aisles. Also, don’t forget the NRA Store, where there are always some bargains, collectibles, and brand new items from clothing to coffee cups. There will be exhibits of firearms collections, an airgun range, and some terrific programs including the Friday night NRA Country Jam featuring Trace Adkins, and the annual Celebration of American Values featuring Beck and Larry the Cable Guy on Saturday evening. On Sunday, the annual Ted Nugent seminar is scheduled at 12:30, and it will likely be a standing-room only event. And do not forget to attend the annual members’ meeting on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with reports from Keane, LaPierre, Cox and other NRA officers. Entry to the exhibit hall is free for NRA members.

SHOOTING FOR THE FUTURE: THE WEST’S LARGEST SHOOTING SPORTS FAIR! RA members are getting a first look at new guns and gear from all over the map,but come June, thousands of people — ultimately consumers — can get a hands-on experience with many of these firearms at the annual Raahauge’s Shooting Sports Fair in Corona, Calif. According to Mike Raahauge, for more than 20 years this shooting fair has attracted huge crowds that spend three days at his property, where children are admitted free, and they go through tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition, BBs and paintballs. Last year, he said 20,000 people attended the Shooting Sports Fair, and they got to meet representatives from literally all of the major firearms companies. “There is nothing else like this in the United States,” Raahauge told Western Shooting Journal. “We get very good in-
N
dustry support, and where else can you go and shoot everybody’s gun and not have to buy it?” As usual, this year’s event — scheduled June 1-3 — will be a joint operation with the staff at Turner’s Outdoors. There are manufacturers’ representatives, firearms instructors and other experts at the event, and there are also seminars over the course of the weekend, discussing big game and waterfowl hunting, upland wing shooting and various other shooting activities. But it doesn’t stop there. The annual Raahauge’s Youth Safari Day is scheduled July 21 this year. Last year, the event drew 4,000 youngsters, and their parents, for a day of activities that included a unique opportunity to shoot at remote-controlled model airplanes with paintball guns. Raahauge estimated that 80,000 paintballs were used
18 Northwest Sportsman & Western Shooting Journal NRA SHOW DOUBLE ISSUE 2012
in that single day. The Youth Safari is a week prior to the California State Sporting Clays shoot, Raahauge noted. He expects approximately 450 shooters for that event, and noted that this year there will be an additional $5,000 in prize money. There will be firearms awarded in every class, and right now Raahauge is looking for additional sponsors for the various shooting stations. Raahauge’s Shooting Enterprises 14995 River Road Dept. Colt Defense-Magpul
Visit Colt, examine new rifles P.O. Box 1868, Dept. NWS, Hartford, CT 06144/(860) 236-6311/www.colt.com
Earlier this year, Colt Defense introduced a new rifle model in collaboration with Magpul featuring some of that company’s top accessories for the AR platform, and visitors to the NRA exhibits can take a close look. The new Colt Defense-Magpul model, built on the Law Enforcement carbine platform, has a retractable buttstock, MOE vertical grip and handguard, Generation 2 rear Back-Up Sight, MOE trigger guard and a pair of Magpul 30-round polymer magazines. The rear
Back-Up Sight is spring-loaded to pop up fast from the folded position, while the hand grip has a compact design with a more vertical grip angle. It is available in black, dark earth, or with contrasting Magpul parts, and models are available with a “bullet button” to make them California compliant. It weighs 6.8 pounds and measures 30.5 inches OAL. Colt has also introduced the Model LE6920CA carbine with a bullet button so it is state compliant for
commercial sale to private citizens in California. It weighs 6.95 pounds and measures 35.5 inches overall with a 16-inch barrel. Another model, built on the M4 platform, has a one-piece monolithic rail extending from the receiver to the front sight. It has an A2 pistol grip, DCH rear sight, Colt flash suppressor and a nine-round magazine. For more information, see us at booth #1321.

Best known for shotguns, Mossberg has jumped into the modern sporting rifle market with a pair of semiauto sport-utility rifles and a bolt-action model that got plenty of attention at the January SHOT Show. They’ll get even more attention during this weekend’s NRA exhibits. The lineup includes: • The MR Tactical with a free-floating 16¼-inch barrel, a removable A2 muzzle brake and A4 flattop
upper receiver with a Picatinny rail. It has a Picatinny quad rail around the barrel. The front and rear sights are removable. The butt stock is adjustable to six positions, and a fixed-stock version is available. • The Modern Rifle, in Mossy Oak Treestand or Brush finishes. It has a free-floating 20-inch barrel, A4 flat top upper with Picatinny rail, an A2 style stock, slender free-floating forend tube, single-stage trigger and five-round magazine.
• Mossberg’s bolt-action Predator is available with a laminated wood stock or a composite sporter stock. Both will feature thick recoil pads, extended magazines, 18½-inch medium fluted barrel. In addition, Mossberg has introduced the Model 715 T, a “tactical .22” autoloader with an M4 flattop design that will be available this year in Optic and camo versions. For more information, see us at booth #1504.

RIFLES
Look for new OMEN rifle from NEMO Arms 3582 Hwy 93 S, Dept. NWS, Kalispell, MT 59901/(406) 752-6366/www.nemoarms.com
New Evolution Military Ordnance — that’s NEMO — is an outfit based in Kalispell, Mont., and they’ll be showing off some superb semi-auto rifles, including the new OMEN model chambered for the .300 Winchester Magnum. This company was started by retired military and special operations people, and they have designed firearms around the AR-15 platform, but with refinements in material and tolerances that make the reliable under all kinds of conditions.
According to Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely (Ret.), NEMO utilizes advanced alloys in the uppers and lowers, and new polymers and plastics for hand guards. He cofounded the company with Clint Walker and Kirk Leopold in partnership with Sonju Industrial. The company also has a long-distance bolt-action hunting rifle. But it will likely be the OMEN in the spotlight, and it is a real piece of work. Designed to reach out to between 800 and 1,200 meters, the OMEN has a
patent-pending proprietary optics system. Another project NEMO is working on is a rifle for maritime uses including marine law enforcement that will be “lightweight” in comparison to big .50 BMG rifles of today. Hunters and competitive target shooters have warmed up to the AR platform, and that accounts for the interest in long-range models chambered for long range calibers. For more information, see us at booth #3040.

There is one precision target rifle in the mix, with a 24-inch bull barrel that has a target crown, black PRS stock and BRO rail. The remainder of Black Rain’s offerings feature “designer” receivers with colorful graphics including one model called the Pink Splash, another with Digital Tan and a third with the Silver Skull pattern. Each rifle comes with a single 30-round Magpul magazine, range bag and sling. For more information, see us at booth #4032.
Barrett’s big guns remain in the spotlight P.O. Box 1077, Dept. NWS Murfreesboro, TN 37133-1077 (615) 896-2938/www.barrettrifles.com
Barrett continues to dominate the big-bore shooting scene in 2012, and that momentum can be credited in large part to rifles currently in production, the M107A1, the MRAD and the REC7 PDW (for Personal Defense Weapon). The M107A1 is chambered for the .50 BMG cartridge, and it is 4 pounds lighter than the military M107 rifle. It comes from the factory ready for a suppressor, and it has a round four-port muzzle brake that
is designed to interface with that suppressor. This big rifle has an aluminum upper receiver, specific titanium components and an advanced bolt carrier group and recoil system. Barrett’s husky MRAD rifle is a bolt-action model that scales 14.8 pounds. It has an adjustable length of pull, thumb-operated safety and ambidextrous magazine release, and a modular design that allows the user to change out the barrel system with simple tools. In .223 Remington or 6.8 SPC, the REC 7 rifle is designed for military or law enforcement work because of its short barrel. There is a commercial version with a 16-inch barrel. The piston is made from 17-4 stainless steel while the pistol bolt is made from 9310 steel. The gas block is chrome-lined and has forward venting. For more information, see us at booth #931.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING FEATURE
GETTING THE RANGE:
SWAROVSKI’S NEW EL RANGE IS A WINNER
W
hen National Rifle Association members gather for their annual exhibits, the Swarovski Optic display always gets busy, and this year will be no exception, thanks to the introduction of the new EL Range, a binocular with an integrated rangefinder that doesn’t look like a rangefinder. This is a superb instrument, and one look through the lenses will be enough to convince a serious shooter that the experts at Swarovski have done it again. This is no ordinary binocularrange finder combination. Available in two versions, an 8x42mm and 10x42mm, the EL Range looks like a typical pair of binoculars, but with the addition of that unique range finder, it’s not “typical” at all. The heart of this new model is a new technology Swarovski calls Swaro-Aim, a powerful and reliable laser range-finding unit that provides an electronic readout in meters or yards. It has a display with five individually adjustable brightness levels and user-friendly LCD screen that is easy to read and is very simple to operate. Dean J. Capuano, communications manager for Swarovski Optik North America, said, “We have been developing this product for a few years now and we are very excited about the end result. The combination of the timetested EL binocular combined with an exceptional rangefinder makes for one tool that will meet the demands for every hunter in the field.” Swaro-AimfeatureswhatSwarovski calls an “integrated gradometer.” This
technology displays the precise and correct shooting distance, and angle. Indeed, it is the only such angledshot program anywhere on the planet. If you can see it, and range it, you will be able to hit it with the help of these binoculars. It has a large center focus wheel that is easy to use even when wearing gloves, and the EL Range has a tough rubber armor exterior that will stack up to all kinds of weather conditions. The 8X model is slightly shorter than the 10X model, but both binoculars are the same width and height. They come with a neck strap and the eyepieces are adjustable so a person wearing eyeglasses is able to use the EL Range with no trouble. The EL Range may be very familiar to Swarovski binocular aficionados, and that comes as no surprise, since they were designed on the highly suc-
cessful and popular EL binocular. And the EL binocular is still enjoying broad acceptance among discerning outdoorsmen and -women for whom a binocular is a piece of yearround equipment. The 12x50mm weighes 35.2 ounces and offers a 300foot field of view at that distance. For people in need of something special, the EL Range fills the bill.

Patriot Ordnance Factory showing off new models 23623 North 67th Avenue, Dept. NWS, Glendale, AZ 85310/(623) 561-9572/ www.pof-usa.com
Several new rifles from Patriot Ordnance Factory will be on display during the NRA exhibits, and don’t be surprised if a lot of people gather around to check them out. Among them are three that Western Shooting Journal found intriguing, all built on the AR-15 platform and all chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Winchester. They all belong to the P308 family, and they’re set up for tactical use, but just might give predators and deer-sized game a real headache. Company founder Frank Desomma noted that POF was first to introduce the AR platform with a piston system, and now many of the larger manufacturers have followed suit. He also noted that POF flutes all of its barrels, and that they are nitrate heat treated rather than chrome lined. This, he indicated, makes for a lighter, long lasting and accurate barrel, even in the shorter lengths. One version has a 16.5-inch barrel with a free-floating monolithic top rail. It weighs just over 9 pounds nd has an NP3 coated, black anodized finish. The rifle measures 34 ¾ inches overall with the stock collapsed and 38 inches with it extended. There are also a pair of rifles with 20-inch barrels. Also fitted with free floating monolithic top rails, one model has a collapsible stock and is available with either a black anodized NP3 coated finish or an O.D. green CeraKote finish. The other has a fixed stock and is available only with the O.D. Green CeraKote finish. These semi-auto rifles have forward bolt assists, ample rails for mounting various optics and lights or lasers, and they come with full-capacity magazines. Patriot Ordnance also offers plenty of rifles in .223-caliber, with various barrel lengths. There are models strictly for law enforcement and the military, and others available on the commercial market. For more information, see us at booth #406.

RIFLES Ruger 77/357 bolt-action rifle
Ruger introduces Takedown 10/22 1 Lacey Place, Dept. NWS, Southport, CT 06890/(203) 259-7843/www.ruger-firearms.com
Just in time for this weekend’s big NRA exhibition in St. Louis, Ruger has introduced a new Takedown version of the legendary 10/22 semi-auto rimfire rifle. The 10/22 Takedown has a black synthetic stock, 18.5-inch stainless steel barrel and matte finish receiver, gold-bead front sight and adjustable rear, and the famous 10-round rotary magazine. It weighs 4.6 pounds and has a 13.5-inch length of pull. The 10/22 Takedown joins Ruger’s other spotlight rifle, which shooters have been reading about for the past couple of months: the bolt-action American Rifle, chambered in .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield.
It is designed with a full-diameter bolt, Marksman Adjustable Trigger, 22-inch free floating hammerforged barrel, flush-fitting polymer rotary magazine, a tang safety and a modern recoil pad. The receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounts that come with the rifle. The trigger is adjustable from 3 to 5 pounds. This rifle features a “Power Bedding” block system that positively locks the receiver. The rifling twist in the .243 Win. –caliber model is 1:9-inch while the twist in the three other calibers is 1:10-inch, and I’d suggest running this one at 3.5- to 4 pounds. That’s not too sensitive, yet it also does not require someone to press so hard on the trigger that
you lose your zero. Also check out the Ruger 77/357 bolt-action rifle chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge. It has a five-round rotary magazine, stainless steel barrel and receiver, and a black composite stock. There’s also a Gunsite Scout Rifle left hand version, in .308 Winchester. Weighing 7.5 pounds, the Gunsite model has a ten-round extended magazine, post front sight and adjustable rear, flash suppressor on a 16.5-inch barrel, laminated wood stock with thick recoil pad and a Picatinny-type rail ahead of the action. For more information, see us at booth #1518.

When Franchi designs a shotgun, they think about you and you’ll realize it the moment you shoulder it: it becomes a natural extension of your arm. Perfect ergonomics, fast swing, no hindering at any time. It is the ideal companion for every hunter thanks to its low maintenance, harmonious shapes and accuracy when aiming. High technology and quality, attractive design and ergonomic research, too often lead to a product that many people cannot afford. Franchi’s innovative philosophy is to create shotguns that offer such features, but that remain accessible to all. Selling a Franchi means to sell a distinctive weapon that is immediately in tune with your customers. For more information, see us at booth #2219.

LOOMING ELECTION MAKES GRASSROOTS WORKSHOP A MUST
CLUBS & ASSOCIATIONS WORKSHOP SUNDAY
The 2012 elections could be the most important in this lifetime, and with so much at stake, this year’s NRA Grassroots Workshop in St. Louis could be the most important activity many people enjoy during the three-day NRA convention. The workshop begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 13 at the Renaissance St. Louis Hotel, Landmark Ballrooms 1-3 on the Lobby level. The audience will hear from NRA experts on federal and state issues, and in addition to remarks from NRA officers and NRA-ILA staff, there is a panel of NRA grassroots activists who will share information on how they get the job done in their individual states and communities. Since January 2009, two anti-gun justices have been appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the next four years could see possibly two or more additional appointments, leaving Second Amendment rights in jeopardy. Just as important as electing a pro-gun president is making certain there is a pro-gun Congress. A conservative pro-gun majority would mean a change in leadership in the Senate, where the Judiciary Committee considers Supreme Court nominees.
WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON The sixth annual NRA Women’s Leadership Luncheon is scheduled Friday, April 13 at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis, beginning at 11 a.m. The program will feature an appearance by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, and is hosted by Susan LaPierre and Suzie Brewster. The invited speakers are Callista Gingrich, Ann Romney and Karen Santorum. This year’s program includes both silent and live auctions.
The annual Clubs & Associations workshop is scheduled Sunday, April 15 at the Renaissance St. Louis Grand Hotel in Landmark Ballrooms 1, 2 and 3 beginning at 9 a.m. Moderated by Elizabeth Bush, national manager for Clubs, Associations and Range Services in the NRA Field Operations Division, this year’s program features veteran NRA board member Herbert A. “Herb” Lanford, Jr., Chairman, Clubs & Associations Committee. In addition, speakers include Jay Moonah, vice president of Marketing, Wild Apricot – Bonasource; Son Nguyen, marketing manager, Clubs & Associations, NRA Field Operations Division; Randy Clark, Recruiting Programs manager, NRA Membership Division; Lars Dalseide, senior media specialist, NRA Media Relations Division, and Gregg Pearre, senior field representative, NRA Field Operations Division

Nikon’s exhibit this weekend will spotlight the new Monarch 3 binocular and a new EDG field scope series, along with a new custom turret program. The Monarch 3 roof-prism binocular is available in 10x42mm and 8x42mm models. The All Terrain Binocular has high-resolution optics in a waterproof and fogproof body. They have long eye relief (24.1mm in 8X and 17.4mm in 10X), multi-click turn-and-slide rubber eyecups, flip-down rubMonarch 3 ber lens covers and Nikon Eco-Glass lenses with silver alloy multilayer prism coatings. Also new is the EDG Fieldscope line with a lens shift VR (vibration reduction) system that consists of two vibration detection sensors that identify horizontal and vertical movement.A pair of Voice Coil Motors utilize the vibration reduction system to eliminate blur caused by vibration. Seven eyepieces with a bayonet-lock design are available, and models range from 20X to 70X. The scope is offered in either an angled or straight body, and comes standard with a 20-60X zoom eyepiece. It may also be used with a Nikon digital SLR camera for taking long-range photographs. It operates on four AA batteries, either alkaline or lithium. Under Nikon’s new Spot-On Custom Turret Program shooters can order personalized engraved turrets on line that are calibrated to match the ballistics of a selected factory or handload. They are available in either a low or high profile.
Swaddling its 4x32 Combat Optic, or BCO, lines, Browe’s A-TACS model answers the call for better and more effective camouflage system integration for duty personnel in any service branch from military to law enforcement. A-TACS is designed as a universal pattern for a wide range of operational environments with several supporting color and design variants. Utilizing a patented process, a palette of natural colors digitally sampled from real-world elements is created in carefully controlled lighting. The pattern is then created using a mathematical algorithm that writes “organically shaped” pixels using the specific color information given. The resulting pattern, while still digital, is far more organic in appearance. It uses small patterns to create larger, more distinct shapes designed to work at a distance. Small shapes create larger shapes and larger shapes are organized into a distinct pattern with no horizontal or vertical orientation. This unique “pattern within a pattern” concept allows A-TACS to effectively break the human outline at great distances, thereby minimizing the “blobbing” effect of other patterns when viewed from a distance. A more effective use of color-range produces a better concealment system. A-TACS is created using a far greater range of intermingled natural colors than was previously possible. The overall base color for the cast is a neutral tan which is designed for use in open, rocky or arid environments. Additionally, the abstract and intricate nature of this A-TACS pattern gives it a unique “fingerprint” which is not only adaptable to various service branches, but also makes it difficult to copy. And Browe’s 4x32 BCO FDE models have a CeraKote "H" series thermal-cured coating. The CeraKote coatings is applied over the Bio Black Titanium anodize and gives the BCO a flat matte finish on the internal surfaces and Flat Dark Earth coating with additional protection on the external surfaces. The CeraKote coating was designed to provide a high-quality, long-lasting finish, with high corrosion protection and durability. The CeraKote has ceramic base and offers utmost levels of hardness and abrasion resistance. It provides exceptional corrosion protection, outstanding abrasion resistance, extreme hardness, and unparalleled durability.

Barnes is exhibiting during this weekend’s NRA gathering so find out about the new loads that were added to its VOR-TX ammunition line. There are two rifle loads and two more for handgunners. A new .41 Magnum cartridge with a 180-grain XPB copper bullet appeals to Western Shooting Journal, and then there’s a .454 Casull load with a 250grain XPB bullet. For big game hunting, Barnes has introduced a .300 AAC round with a 110-grain tipped TSX FB bullet, and a .35 Whelan with a 180-grain TSX FB bullet.
Check out the new CCI ‘Quiet-22’ 2299 Snake River Ave., Lewiston, ID 83501 (208) 746-2351/www.cci-ammunition.com
The past couple of years have seen a rekindled romance among many shooters for the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, and now CCI has unveiled a new round that is less noisy, which makes sense for shooting on indoor ranges, or in areas where it’s prudent to keep the noise down. Enter the Quiet-22, which pushes a 40-grain bullet out the muzzle at 710 fps, generating approximately 25 percent of the perceived noise from a standard .22 Long Rifle round. According to CCI, the Quiet-22 discharge is so low that one needn’t worry about ear protection. The Quiet-22 works well in semiautomatics, bolt action and single-shot rifles, and it is also a good choice for handguns.

Black Hills reveals new loads P.O. Box 3090, Dept. NWS, Rapid City, SD 57709/(605) 348-5150/www.black-hills.com
There are new loads from Black Hills in 5.56mm/.223 Remington, .204 Ruger and .300 Whisper, and they’re going to be available even while the company is filling its recently announced five-year Navy contract for precision 5.56mm ammunition. This year, Black Hills is adding a 5.56mm load with a 69-grain Sierra MatchKing bullet, dubbed the “OTM’ by the military. This bullet has a record for accuracy, and it is designed for use in a 1:9-inch twist barrel, which is what one finds in the majority of AR-type rifles. The new 5.56mm load pushes that bullet out of the muzzle at 2,875 fps in a 20-inch barrel to deliver sub-MOA accuracy. For varmint hunters, the new Black Hills load in .204 Ruger is topped by a 32-grain Hornady V-Max bullet. Capable of velocities topping 4,000 fps, the new load is designed to destroy varmints with sub-MOA accuracy. Then comes the .300 Whisper load, which started out as a wildcat developed by J.D. Jones. This new load is topped by a 125-grain match bullet and it virtually duplicates the ballistics of the 7.62x39mm with light bullets. Black Hills notes that this ammunition is compatible with rifles chambered for the .300 AAC Blackout cartridge. The new Navy contract calls for the delivery of 50 million rounds of ammunition topped with 77grain bullets. 64 Northwest Sportsman & Western Shooting Journal NRA SHOW DOUBLE ISSUE 2012

Ask Hodgdon about ‘CFE 223’ 6231 Robinson, P.O. Box 2392, Shawnee Mission, KS 66201/(913) 362-9455/www.hodgdon.com
Hopefully, former NRA Director Bob Hodgdon will be on hand during this weekend’s NRA gathering in St. Louis, but if you miss him, don’t miss asking about a hot new reloading propellant formulated for reducing copper fouling for high-volume rifle shooters. This powder is dubbed CFE 223, for “Copper Fouling Eraser.” It is a spherical powder that meters superbly, and there is reloading data available for 27 different cartridges and 147 different loads. According to Hodgdon, this propellant delivers maximum velocities in the .204 Ruger, .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington and .308 Winchester. Data is available on-line at the Hodgdon website and in the new Annual Manual, and loads are available for a broad selection of cartridges ranging from the .17 Remington to .375 H&H. Available in 1- and 8-pound cans, CFE 223’s formula includes an ingredient developed for use in military propellants, Hodgdon revealed. Hodgdon has also released the 2012 edition of its Annual Manual, with more than 5,000 loads covering hundreds of popular calibers. In its ninth year, the Annual Manual has information on 30 Hodgdon, 19 IMR and 10 Winchester propellants. You will find data on the new .300 AAC Blackout cartridge, and lead-free loads for 21 different rifle cartridges. There is also data for the new CFE 223 powder with 147 loads covering 27 different cartridges. For more information, see us at booth #3400.

Check Redding’s new national match dies 1089 Starr Road, Dept. NWS, Cortland, NY 13045 (607) 753-3331/www.redding-reloading.com
One-time NRA Director Robin Sharpless is busy guy these days and you’ll find him at the Redding display this weekend, talking about the company’s new forming dies and the national match die set for the .300 Blackout. The new national match loading die set for the SAAMI-approved .300 Blackout cartridge features a full-length sizing die, a competition seating die and a taper crimp die. Redding’s Match Series dies were developed in response to demand from competition shooters, and there are legions of them in the NRA. The new forming dies were developed because of the rapidly increasing popularity of the Blackout cartridge and demand for brass. The Redding Form #1 die and a Form-and-Trim die are designed for use with .222 Remington and .223 Remington brass to create .300 Blackout cases. The reformed brass must be reamed or turned at the neck to assure the correct case thickness. For more information, see us at booth #404.

Look for Donny Shride at the Rainier Ballistics booth, and ask him about plated bullets, because he’s got some new ones, including a projectile specifically for the .30 Carbine. What makes these bullets special is that Rainier Ballistics double-strike the bullets in carbide dies for uniformity. The bullet cores are swaged and then plated, after which the bullets are re-struck. The final step is polishing in walnut shells. Rainier manufactures bullets from .32 (.312) to .50 caliber. They are fully plated, which makes them perfect for use on indoor ranges. Rainier Ballistics has increased its focus on competitive shooters, and they are also producing hollowpoints with hex-shaped cavities. The company uses virgin and secondary lead alloys and pure virgin copper in the production of its bullets. For more information, see us at booth #517.

Gun Storage Solutions, Kikstands allow gun shop display 18317 North 2600 East Road, Cooksville, IL (309) 725-3341/www.storemoreguns.com
Gun Storage Solutions is a subsidiary of a company begun by Kevin Kinsella in 1984 to supplement the family’s grain farm business, and in 2005, the safe business became his mainstay. Three years ago, the company was organized and two “flagship” products were introduced: handgun hangers and rifle rods. The following year, Kinsella designed Kikstands, which are used to display firearms in a retail display case. The Kikstand is made from vinyl-coated wire and it will fit guns from .22 caliber upwards. The Kikstand may be used on any flat surface, and this product assures that a firearm removed from a display will go back in at the same position. Kikstand products are made in the U.S. They are simple, yet rugged. This company also produces Handgun Hangers for display case shelves or even the shelves of gun safes. They are shaped to fit tightly to a shelf and allow the suspension of handguns below. There are also bed-frame Handgun Hangers to keep a pistol close for home security all night long. There are several different styles of Handgun Hangers including one for magnum handguns. The company is located on 3.5 acres in the central Illinois corn belt, and they do business all over the map. For more information, see us at booth #323.
The .308 CNC-milled charge handle, also made from 7075 T6 aluminum features a milled tac latch. Black Rain has teamed up with Sampson manufacturing to produce a lightweight slim tube that may be fitted with modular Picatinny rails. The company has produced a new water displacement system that is both a cleaner and corrosion barrier, and also a lubricant. It comes in a 4-ounce aerosol. For more information, see us at booth #4032.

This was done due to customer demand, because safes can come wired to accommodate a de-humidifier.
based company that has customers all over the globe. This company produces the iMarksman Virtual Target Systems, allowing dry fire in virtually any setting, whether in a classroom, your basement, exhibit hall or outdoor gun range. This system allows an instructor to control the behavior of the targets, and the system can project images on a screen or wall. The system can be used with nearly any type of firearm, and there are laser simulators for Smith & Wesson and Glock pistols, and a dry fire trigger reset kit for Glock models. Once a firearm is fitted with the laser unit, it is activated by the firing pin when the real firearm or a simulator is dry-fired. This system also enables the shooter to track the movements of his/her firearm and this movement is marked visually on the screen. iMarksman is adaptable, and it may be used with rifles, shotguns and handguns ranging from .22 through .50 caliber and for 12-, 16- and 20-gauge shotguns. That’s why this system is used by firearms instructors, police departments and individuals who want to simulate a home shooting range. BOGgear’s Bino Rest 110 N. Milam #149, Dept. NWS Fredericksburg, TX 78624 (877) 264-7637/www.boggear.com
Big game hunters, especially in the West, often use fullsize binoculars for long glassing sessions and to save their arms should warm right up to BOGgear’s new BogPod Bino Rest (BBR), a platform that mounts on a tripod. Held in place by a wide rubber strap, the Bog-Pod Bino Rest will support a full-sized pair of full-size binoculars from 7X to 20X. Because they are stationary, binoculars mounted on the BBR stay focused on a specific area. Made from high-strength ABS plastic, the BBR weighs only 6.3 ounces. A sample provided to Western Sporting Journal
was just as advertised, and it appears to be pretty rugged. It features a rubber-covered inset on the base to protect the binocular from scratches, and it also helps hold the binocular securely. On the underside is a 3⁄8-20 threaded slot for mounting on a tripod and it comes with a ¼-20 bushing, just in case one needs to downsize from the standard threaded size for use with Bog-Pod shooting sticks. BOGgear also produces the Adapt-a-Pod. Made from aluminum it mounts to a base easily with only a screwdriver. This device allows the user to convert any standard monopod, bipod or tripod with standard ¼-20 or 3 ⁄8-16 mounting bolts for use with Bog-Pod accessories. The BOGgear Extreme Shooting Rest (XSR) fits on top of a tripod and allows a shooter to rest a rifle for long-range, accurate shots. It is adjustable to accommodate different rifles.

Check the accessories from Command Arms 911 William Leigh Dr., Dept. NWS, Tullytown, PA 19007/(866) 611-9576/www.commandarms.com
Several new shooting accessories from Command Arms will be on exhibit during this weekend’s NRA gathering, including a new oversize trigger guard with a magazine well guide for an AR receiver. This easily installed accessory is CNC manufactured from aircraftgrade aluminum with a black anodized finish. A new Picatinny quad rail for modern sporting rifles and carbines, made from aviation-grade aluminum, features QD sling swivel mounting points and it is finished with black oxide. Two Roni conversion units have also been introduced. They include a civilian/commercial model that allows the user to insert a pistol into the unit with a threaded 16-inch barrel, and muzzle shroud. It resembles a Bullpup rifle, with a 10-inch upper flattop Picatinny rail, two 5-inch rails along either side, ambidextrous space magazine holder on the buttstock and a unique trigger block. A shorter pistol-carbine conversion is primarily for police or the military, since the addition of this unit to a pistol results in the manufacture of an “AOW” and Short-Barrel Rifle (SBR) subject to regulation under the National Firearms Act. There’s also a new magazine coupler for sport-utility rifles that holds two full magazines in tandem, with one inserted into the magazine well and the other out to the side. Another accessory is the new collapsible buttstock with a cheek weld, and a rubber non-slip buttpad. For more information, see us at booth #3800.
For your range: Bullet Bunker for safe shooting P.O. Box 400, Port Clinton, OH 43452/(419) 341-1416/www.thebulletbunker.com
Every gun range needs a good bullet stop, and the NRA exhibits provide a chance to check out one of the best, the Bullet Bunker, capable of stopping a .50-caliber BMG bullet. Designed with a self-sealing rubber target face and a medium made from layers of laminated ballistic fabric, the Bullet Bunker can dramatically slow down a big, high-speed bullet. The “secret” of this setup is called “in-elastic collision.” That means a projectile is slowed down by going through a blend of polyester and nylon similar to materials used in soft body armor. Behind that material is another ballistic medium made up of interlocked rectangles of ballistic rubber that is specially engineered to stop bullets rapidly. Bullet Bunker models can be built to a customer’s specifications. Their use improves air quality because bullets don’t splatter but instead slow down without fragmentation. They can also be easily recovered.
release” latch system, and snap-down rubber overmolded cushion grip handles on three sides. SKB’s MIL-STD Injection Molded Watertight rifle case is designed with four patented trigger latches and four reinforced padlock locations. It also has inline skate-style wheels for easy transport. The case measures 42.5x14.5x5.5 inches on the inside, and the interior features a layered foam base and convoluted foam in the lid, what many people call the “egg carton” pattern. The interior is ample to house a rifle with a mounted scope, and keep them secure. This case has a gasket to keep it watertight and keep out the dust. In addition to the rifle case, there are several
handgun-sized cases in the line as well. They feature double latches, thick padding and watertight, rugged construction.

This buttstock is not round like other models, but has a more triangular shape and it is tapered. For those who use standard metallic sights, this shape allows something of a cheek rest, and there is an optional snap-on cheek riser if the shotgun is fitted with some type of optical sight. The stock also has replaceable butt pads made from rubber. There is also a seven-round shotshell carrier that mounts on the left side of the receiver. This model is different than other such carriers because each shell slot features and adjustable shell retention pad, so shells can be held very tight, or a bit looser. The tactical stock package has a unique forend that features a replaceable nose cap that comes either plain or with three mini-rails to allow mounting a flashlight or laser, while the forearm remains free from rails that can be sharp and uncomfortable to hold. Also, inside the stock kit’s pistol grip section, users will find a small storage compartment. For more information, see us at booth #630.

Timney Triggers shows off Archery Trigger 3940 W.Clarendon Ave., Dept. NWS, Phoenix, AZ, 85019/(602) 274-2999/www.timneytriggers.com
The company that created something of a legend with triggers for bolt-action rifles, shotguns and AR-type rifles is carving new paths with its Archery Trigger. NRA members can find out about this device during this weekend’s exhibition in St. Louis. Designed with the same principles that went into the creation of Timney’s precision firearm triggers, this new archery trigger was developed in response to public demand. Timney has been around since 1946, and the newest innovation for riflemen is a replacement trigger for the Savage Axis/Edge rifle. This trigger is CNC-machined from solid steel and case hardened right here in the United States, and its pull weight can be adjusted from 1.5 to 4 pounds. There are versions in blued or nickel-plated steel. Timney makes replacement triggers for a variety of modern sporting rifles, including Remington, Winchester, Mauser, the Browning A-Bolt, Ruger, Enfield, Weatherby and many other brands. On the company website, shooters will find installation instructions that can be downloaded for every firearm that Timney makes triggers for. For more information, see us at booth #2830.
New lightweight concealment system from Deep Conceal P.O. Box 833, Dept. NWS, Layton, UT 84041 (877) 443-3486/deepconceal.com
Deep Conceal will be introducing a new unique design to its deep-cover carry system that can be adapted to virtually all kinds of handguns, so stop by their exhibit at the NRA convention in St. Louis for the lowdown. The Deep Conceal system is unlike anything from other sources, with a harness and belt made from commercial-grade cotton that is very comfortable to wear next to the skin in all kinds of weather conditions. The system is a combination of a belt and shoulder straps and the wearer can mount a different holster/pouch for different types and sizes of handguns without having to purchase a complete rig. The adjustment straps are a cotton-polyester blend and can be shifted up to 7 inches, and it is possible to carry a pair of Model 1911 pistols under each arm while riding a motorcycle. The configuration allows someone to carry guns as large as a Desert Eagle comfortably and undetected. In addition to the concealment rig, Deep Conceal has also announced a new visor holster that is designed to hold a medium- or small-frame revolver or pistol securely above the visor of an automobile. Also, Deep Conceal offers a concealed weapon shirt that is a dress shirt with hook-and-loop nylon fasteners down the front, allowing a quick rip open to access a concealed handgun in an emergency. Deep Conceal carry rigs can be worn all day without discomfort. For more information, see us at booth #140.
Safari Club International 4800 West Gates Pass Rd., Dept. NWS, Tucson, AZ 85745/(520) 620-9313/www.scifirstforhunters.org
For the millions of American hunters, anglers, and other outdoor recreationists, federal public lands are an increasingly important destination. Nearly half of all hunters conduct a portion of their hunting activity on these lands. Lack of access is cited as a primary reason that hunters and anglers stop participating in these traditional activities. Numerous reports verify that access to Federal land is problematic in many places. In fact, a 2004 report to the House Appropriations Committee concluded that more than 35 million acres of land administered by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service have inadequate access. SCI believes that U.S. Federal Lands are to be managed under the principles of multiple-use. Outdoor recreation has been and should continue to be a primary use of U.S. Federal lands. SCI is on the forefront of the fight to keep public lands open and accessible to hunters and shooters across the country. For more information, see us at booth #3131.

LaPierre, continued from page 14
But some courageous agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives came forward as whistleblowers. They spoke to congressional investigators and helped launch an investigation that continues today, with more revelations coming all the time. However, LaPierre was critical of the press because it has not jumped on the story, with a few exceptions. Here, again, he suggested, is an example of the press providing cover for their favorite president. “By their silence,” he said, “they are, in effect, participating in the cover-up. It is one of the most shameful days in the history of this country. It’s gotten to the point where they are not interested in covering the news, they are interested in promoting their position. It’s all agenda journalism these days and their agenda is to re-elect President Obama.” ‘Strength of NRA’ If LaPierre has any say, gun owners will spread the facts, and make sure voters understand just what the issues are between now and November. He will have plenty of help from NRA members. “Everywhere I go,” he observed, “the strength of the NRA is all of us, one by one by one. The NRA is you. NRA’s strength, decade in and decade out is reflective of where the American public stands on the Second Amendment. “Our American culture,” LaPierre continued, “is deeply imbedded in the right to own a firearm, and NRA is embedded in every city, town and block all over this country. “That’s our strength,” he stated, “in the hearts of the American public and our health is measured by the health of the Second Amendment.” LaPierre told Western Sporting Journal that the most important thing he can do between now and November is to “get out there and thank everybody.” “I want to shake their hands and look them in the eye and say ‘Thanks,’ ” he said. “Through their participation, through their will and their actions, they are making it possible to save freedom.” Watch for LaPierre to begin fulfilling that mission during this weekend’s NRA gathering in St. Louis. ■
