EDITOR'S LETTER

Being married myself, I fully appreciate how

P ORT RA I T BY N ATO W ELTO N

everything comes to a grinding HALT when he finally pops the question. The flurry of excited messages you send friends and loved ones to share your news; the flurry of equally excited replies, and then, of course, the abundance of phone calls and emails made in preparation for the big day itself. Being engaged is certainly a busy time. Like any bride-to-be, I experienced mixed emotions of sheer joy, bafflement (Where? How? Who? What to do next?!), as well as immense pressure. After all, there is the inescapable knowledge that all eyes will be on you and, come hell or high water, you are determined that every single detail will be amazing, from the table decor, to the floral arrangements and, crucially, your dress. With this in mind, every bride goes forth with the bar set so high that even the most stylish, the most beautiful, the most savvy and the most clever of us cannot jump it. But, ultimately, you know what? It doesn’t have to be that hard. Take it from me, the best thing you can do is to sit back and focus your energy on enjoying every moment of the prep and planning. Because as spectacular as your wedding day will be (and it will be), the run-up to it is also a part of that experience. From picking the dress of your dreams (see page 18 for our catwalk guide) to your Cinderella slippers (page 26), right through to your fabulous hen (be inspired on page 54), these moments also form part of your precious wedding memories. At MINE Weddings, we have sat back and had a good think (you can thank us later) about what, where, how and who to consider to be part of your wedding story. With luxury in mind – we’ve not held back! – we’re offering you the very best from the world of weddings right now. I truly hope that you find everything you need for your big day (and plenty you don’t, but that you oh-so-want!)

Enjoy! Astrid x EDITOR

FO R T H E LOV E O F

Let’s face it, choosing the dress is (almost) as important as finding your man. And nothing will create an entrance quite like couture…

EDITED BY ASTRID JOSS

RALPH & RUSSO

CHANEL COUTURE

G R E AT C A P E S

Hollywood glamour is what this duo do best. The brand’s loyal nod to the romantic yet powerful heroine is everpresent through floral referencing and the use of sumptuous fabrics, while simultaneously giving that all-over shimmer and shine with glass beading. Never in the history of couture has a matching floor-length cape been so beautiful executed; the final punctuation mark to each dress it accompanies.

DAY D R E A M -Y

Dreamy and cloud-like gowns wafted down the catwalk this season in silvery greys and pretty pastel shades. Never before has tulle, feathers and sparkle been combined in such a serene way. Necklines were either neat and kept a-breast or low and plunging with hemlines being all at once high and low – clever Karl is doing his usual trick of keeping us on our toes! This is classic Chanel couture at its best – elegant, feminine and setting fashion trends where others will follow.

18

B RIDAL COUTU RE

ASHI STUDIO CO O L CU T S

King of architectural fashion cool, Ashi seems to cut his cloth with a wand! If a totally light-bulbflashing entrance is what you want, he’s the designer for you. The gowns’ sharp silhouettes and intricate details are a fresh upgrade on bridal fashion code. Fairy-tales are retold through each handcrafted design and haute couture is revived by these masterfully sculpted pieces of wearable art.

CHRISTIAN DIOR

FA I RY TA LE F E M I N I S M

Maria Grazia’s first couture collection – as the first-ever female designer of the house – leaves us in no doubt that dresses and dressing up should be a soft, romantic experience. Her whimsical collection resembles nymphs in a night garden; casting a spell of serenity over us, and drawing out our inner fairy-tale princess bride. Full yet delicately detailed gowns with tight, strapless bodices will leave all who behold them utterly breathless.

CELIA KRITHARIOTI GREEK GODDESS

The Greek couture house may have been founded in 1906 (three years older than Chanel in fashion history) but it has never been more alive. Showing for the first time on the couture calendar in Paris, the design house served up a collection that fulfilled every girlish fantasy of romance. Striped candy pink ball gowns with giant bow details, French-lace with high collars, vast tiers of rippling tulle, and fitted sheer ivory lace with feather sleeves.

These gowns have all the drama you need for a lifetime and as much heart fluttering one can possibly cope with for one day. While the hoods set a mysterious tone, these white and light-as-air creations have a somewhat angelic feel to them with almost cloud-like silhouettes, balancing out the overall tone. She who dares to wear, wins.

TH E S P I R IT UA LI S T

“Gloriously tinted with spirituality and energy is how the maison described this collection, where spring has most certainly sprung! Inspired by the creators of myths that colour both ancient and modern Asian civilisation, it is a culmination of colourful and fresh pieces mirroring the depth yet harmony of a beautiful painting. You will look and feel like no other bride in a Hobeika creation.

MIRA ZWILLINGER

D E LI C ATE M E E T S D E C A D E N C E

Take a deep bow for the genius that is Mira Zwillinger. She understands perfectly the elegance and style that women lust after; for her complex yet flawlessly pulled together creations are so delicate and feminine, no one can possibly deny their beauty. The use of very soft, light tulles and lace offers a sexiness without over stepping any mark.

LU X U RY D E F I N E D Timeless, effortless, luxurious and stylish – these classic beauties will secure a flawless look. Structured silhouettes and classic lines take on a sensual air with equal amounts of grace and charm in this Love Is In The Air collection.

STEWART PARVIN

BY R OYA L A P P O I NTM E NT

For the English rose who wishes to channel Grace Kelly with something elegant, modern and romantic, look to Mr Parvin. He will create a gown so divine that you’ll be longing to have it made in every shade under the sun to wear beyond your wedding day. His cut is so pristine and his eye so well trained that it’s impossible for him not to achieve perfection. And if his designs are good enough for the English royals… well, say no more.

KATE HALFPENNY B R IT CO O L

Behold an intelligent collection for the bride who wants versatility, modernity and a true sense of fashion. Effortlessly bridging the gap between vintage inspirations and Brit cool, her dresses have just the right dose of rock’n’roll as they do classic chic. The interchangeable elements mean there is something to work for every woman in terms of shape and style.

ZUHAIR MURAD

P OW E R D R E S S I N G

Dresses have a fast pace ‘keep up with me’ feel about them at Zuhair Murad. Slinky, sexy and studded with beading, there is star quality to each and every one of his designs. The Murad woman is not to be trifled with – she’s powerful, head-strong and dynamic. Who else would create a finale bridal dress rivalling the width of any of Queen Elizabeth I’s regal gowns? Make sure you book a church with double doors.

M I N E ADVERTO R IAL

If you want to wed in a gown with serious designer kudos, The Wedding Club is your one-stop bridal boutique

CAROLINA HERRERA

C

lare Thompson and Emma Clarke of The Wedding Club boutique know a thing, or three, about on-trend bridal wear, stocking only the biggest names, including Carolina Herrera, Naeem Khan, Temperley London and Jenny Packham (to list just a few). Locations including Birmingham, as well as the fashionable London enclaves of Knightsbridge (a hop, skip and jump away from Harrods), and a newly opened boutique in South Kensington. Having been in the bridal business for 15 years, launching originally in Birmingham to serve the glamorous northern set, they pride themselves on seeking out the most exclusive British and international designers, with a huge emphasis on quality and luxury. The secret behind their savoir faire would appear to be that opposites attract within their own partnership. Clare jokes that they have very different taste: “Emma will always pick the biggest, sparkliest, featheriest, most jingle-jangle piece on show, whereas I like well cut, architectural dresses with clean lines.” The result is a fabulous, curated but varied selection of gowns. As Clare says, “If people can’t find a dress in one of our three shops, then I don’t know what we're doing wrong.” In order for dresses to take centre stage, a huge emphasis is put on the stores' environment and quality of service. “We make it our absolute business to get to know the brides-to-be, their wedding, their wants and needs, and then we act as their bridal stylists,” says Clare. Since opening in 2014, Knightsbridge has been the fash pack’s go-to bridal destination of choice stocking Berta, Zuhair Murad, Herrera, and Georges Hobeika. South Kensington offers a more bohemian, less statement edit: think Jenny Packham, Temperley London, Legends Romona Keveza, Bliss Monique L’huillier, and just recently a star-studded event welcomed Savannah Miller’s exclusive new bridal collection. Brides-to-be who are part of ‘The Club’ are also able to see bridal dresses glide down the catwalk on models at exclusive events, as well as the chance to meet the in-house team. And as Clare and Emma think of everything, there is always a sample sale available for bridal bargain hunters looking for a fabulous deal. For brides-to-be, The Wedding Club is a magical bridal merry-goround – there’s thrills excitement, and glamour with support on hand to help you put on the show of your life come the big day. As Clare says with confidence and ease, “I’m always on to the next big thing I can offer my clients, it’s so important to breathe fashion life into bridal.” It certainly makes for one very slick bridal fashion operation indeed!

MY FANTASY

To celebrate her marriage to Alexander Spencer-Churchill (above), Scarlett Spencer-Churchill

had a fabulous UK hen party on the Hanbury family estate; but if she'd done it differently…

M

y hen party was at Wembury House, Devon – the Hanbury’s family house. I love the English countryside, and it's my favorite house in the UK. On the first night, we had a candle-lit dinner of Champagne and lobster in the beautiful observatory on the front lawn, over looking the sea. It was magical. In contrast to the very British setting, the second night of my hen was Asian themed; I was born and lived in Hong Kong and Tokyo. We wore vintage Shanghai Tang dresses and Olivia von Halle kimonos, with chopsticks in our hair!

SOUTH OF FRANCE FOR REAL TIME CHIC

Suede bag, £1,775, jimmychoo. com; wellies, £95, Hunter at harrods.com

We'd stay at my country house in Provence, as I love how untouched it is; it feels like an old French film! We'd go shopping in the local market and find hidden gems. For lunch, we'd go to Le Bistrot du Paradou because it has the best wine and cheese board (AA Gill gave it 5 stars when he used to go). The afternoon would be spent in Saint Remy, shopping and drinking Pernod to get in to the French spirit. In the evening we’d charter a helicopter to St Tropez to Dress, £1,775, and suede bag £1,280, party; you can’t beat the vibe both Chloé at harrods.com; sunglasses, in town. £247, Dolce & Gabbana at harrods.com

Silk scarf, £290, Salvatore Ferragamo at harrods.com

GLASTONBURY TO LET OUR HAIR DOWN We’d arrive by helicopter as Camp Kerala (super-luxe,

boutique hotel style tents); it has its own heli pad, where you get picked up by a Range Rover and taken to your tent! I’d wear Hunter wellies, and we'd listen to Fleetwood Mac and Dolly Parton to get us all in the mood for the big wedding party to come!

SLUG

A NIGHT IN LONDON THE CITY THAT KNOWS HOW TO PARTY We'd visit The Aman Spa at The

Connaught, followed by an afternoon at The Berkeley (I love the idea of eating a club sandwich in my Frette dressing gown by the pool!). At night we would head back to The Connaught, which hands down has London’s slickest bar (think Tom Ford all the way!), to sample all the cocktails, especially my favourite, The Astor Fizz. We'd end with a night cap at Claridge's Fumoir Bar for a glass of Dom Perignon and some famous Moscow salmon bites to re-fuel, as nothing makes you feel more chic than sitting here, and I’d want to end the night on a high.

By day we'd dress in kaftans over our bikinis; sunbathe, read, snorkel, swim, repeat! I'd need a little quiet time to preserve myself – and my energy – for the partying to come! After sunset, we’d drink Espresso Martinis to get us going; dinner would be lobster, caviar and fois gras, as you have to treat yourself… always! We’d dance to any rock and roll or reggae track, and then to pump it up a bit, an electronic remix of a rock and roll song – my first wedding dance song was a remix of Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac.

THE ART OF GIFTING

Creating the perfect gift list should take time and thought, says Robert James. List in haste, repent (all those unwanted towels) at leisure!

S

omething old, something new, something borrowed something blue … This is typically a British wedding custom but still a sweet sentiment. Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity. This is a beautiful way to start your wedding day but you will have a life time together so on your gift list consider those items that will last forever that you can see and admire daily. Selecting the right gifts to reflect yourself, your partner and your lifestyle and taking the opportunity to start building the home and interiors of your dream, and not just not another pile of unwanted towels and uncoordinated bed lining. Remember home is where the heart is!

Your wedding fragrance is about so much more than just smelling divine on the day; it’s about capturing the moment, and remembering it for ever after. When it’s this important, it has to be Creed…

THE SCENT OF

A

bridal fragrance fantasy is exactly what Creed is made of. It all started with a beautiful pair of scented gloves delivered to King George III in 1760 by James Henry Creed, London’s newest and hottest tailor. Since then, the 260-year-old Anglo-French fragrance house has made its mark by scenting British and European royalty. The Creed family has passed down its creative know-how through seven generations, right through to the present day. Today, this flawless history has translated itself into the most beautiful and special fragrances accessible that any bride (or groom) could imagine. Indeed, Olivier Creed and his son, Erwin, travel the world endlessly to source the finest and rarest of raw ingredients. Fast forward to today. You’re engaged and it's la vie en rose! You head to Mayfair’s fashionable Mount Street, home to London’s most desirable designer boutiques. You start the day with breakfast at The Connaught, before your dress fitting at Ralph & Russo, and later to Jessica McCormack for those much-needed bridal jewels. But if there is one thing – one special thing – that you must squeeze into your to-do list, it’s a visit to the Creed boutique for a bespoke fragrance consultation. For there is nothing more romantic or more memorable than discovering and wearing your dream fragrance on your day. Only scent can evoke a memory, a mood, a feeling that will send you to near-giddy heights… and keep you there. We adore Love In White (3), inspired by Erwin Creed as he zoomed through the South of France in his open-top sports car, the fields ablaze with white blooms, scenting the air with a powdery, soft and feminine fragrance. Days later he raced back to Paris to recreate the essence of this amorous and adventurous mood. Like the first smell of spring, this white bouquet of flowers includes magnolia, white hyacinth and narcissus. Then there is Fleurisimo (1) – elegant, glamorous and full of confidence, originally commissioned by a 20th Century European prince for his movie-star bride on their wedding day. This will leave you feeling breathless and empowered with Bulgarian rose, ylang-ylang and tuberose. The stunning White Flowers (2) – with geranium, rose and jasmine at its heart – is also not to be missed. A part of Les Royales Exclusives collection – which was created to present Creed’s most sort-after fragrances – it is presented in an ornate bottle embossed with Creed’s iconic plume, and for you to cherish as you would a work of art. Once you find the fragrance for you, the monogramming service will add initials, a date or a message onto your bottle. There is nothing else quite like it to celebrate your wedding day or your love. You’ve spent time seeking out your dream wedding gown; now’s the time to pay a little TLC to your smile. After all, it will be in every photo, too, and you want it to look its best. Cue, Dr Kishan Modha (left), from London’s OnlyOneClinic…

A

white wedding dress is an option on your big day, but let’s be honest, there are so many wonderful alternatives. A beautiful white smile, on the other hand: no compromise! It’s the one day of your life when you’ll be centrestage – mingling, laughing, posing for photographs – and, frankly, so will your teeth. Luckily for all you brides-to-be, there’s Dr Kishan Modha and his team at the OnlyOneClinic in London’s Wimpole Street. As an award-winning general dental practitioner, Dr Kishan has over 15 years’ experience, as well as a list of loyal celebrity clientele who trust their million-dollar smiles in his capable hands. As a practitioner in restorative and aesthetic dentistry, Dr Kishan not only whitens teeth but is the man to turn to if you wish to eliminate any imperfections in your wedding smile; from bonding (where chips and imperfections are seemingly erased) to orthodontics – using Invisalign braces to close gaps and move teeth without the look of bulky, traditional metal ‘train tracks’.

First-class service

Dr Kishan set up the clinic in 2015, and customer care and satisfaction has been his no1 priority ever since. Forget any fear of dentists; OnlyOneClinic offers pain-free dentistry in a friendly and calming environment. Offering bespoke plans for each patient, Dr Kishan and his team can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. And as well as great service, the OnlyOneClinic uses only the industry’s top P O RTR AIT BY NATO WELTON

products – sourced by Dr Kishan himself – to ensure the very best results for his clients. From Swiss-German dental implant systems, like Straumann and Zimmer Biomet – which have over 50 years' of research and development in the field to give long-lasting predictable result – to the latest technology in ceramic restorations, which include crowns, bridges and porcelain veneers. The result? A naturally beautifully smile, enhanced by the know-how of Dr Kishan.

White wedding (smile!)

Did you know that not all whitening treatments are the same? At the OnlyOne Clinic, Dr Kishan – with his vast knowledge of aesthetic dentistry – has chosen to use a system called Enlighten Evolution Whitening. It is the world‘s best-performing teeth-whitening treatment, thanks to its 98% success rate. Proven to be safe, as well as effective, Enlighten can lighten up to 16 shades and gives exceptional whitening results without the need to change your diet (because, trust us, that wedmin will require a heck of a lot of coffee, and the occasional glass of red wine!). After an initial consultation, Dr Kishan creates a mould of the patient’s teeth, then after two weeks of over-night application – and three appointments at the clinic to check progress – a voilà, a new whiter smile! The best bit? The results can last indefinitely if you maintain your smile with the correct, easy-to-use products; so you’ll have beautifully white teeth from church to beach, and beyond. Now that’s something

Robert James is on a mission:

to give grooms-to-be the pampering they deserve!

I

’ve always been fascinated by bridal publications, and what is an old-fashioned approach to wedding-day prep. Where is the groom in these preparations!? Why should the man not shine, too? That's why I've compiled a count down to help all you guys out there look your best on your big day…

Slim fit

12 – 3 MONTHS BEFORE

"We have developed a method that churns out results every time, " says Greg Cornthwaite from Embody Fitness." A sensible nutrition plan that aims to provide all nutrients necessary for this process, as well as promoting fat loss, combined with resistance training programmes, have been shown to be the most effective in achieving these dual goals. Resistance training is a more effective mode of exercise than cardiovascular training, as it creates a long-lasting metabolic disturbance. This means that the body will continue to use calories at a greater rate for up to 36 hours after the session. The programme will need to change every 3-4 weeks if you are looking to maximise results." Visit embodyfitness.co.uk

Truefitt & Hill is officially the world’s oldest barber shop. Established in 1805, providing exemplary service to London’s gentry and to royalty. In the years since 1805 the company has had the honor of serving the monarchs of Great Britain throughout nine consecutive reigns. "At Truefitt & Hill we have been helping grooms prepare for their wedding days for over two centuries," says Tara Draper-Stumm. ACNE & RASHES

A daily skin routine is a must, if you don’t have one already. Create a daily routine that includes the cleansing, toning and the moisturising of your skin. Do this at least 30 days before your wedding. This should clear up any rashes and

help to reduce or eradicate acne. You can take this one step further by booking a facial one week prior to your wedding day. Don’t worry if this takes you out of your comfort zone, remember this is for a very special occasion! LUXURY WET SHAVE

Take advice from your barber on the timing of your appointment and then book yourself in for a traditional hot towel wet shave. To simplify the process of booking a haircut, facial, luxury wet shave and manicure you could book an Ultimate Grooming Experience. This has all of these treatments included in one appointment that lasts just under two hours. Do not forget to remove any unsightly nasal or ear hair. If visiting a barber is not possible, ensure that you shave yourself with a straight-edge razor. Visit truefittandhill.co.uk

GROOMING

LEFT Gentlemen's Tonic in Mayfair offers a variety of treatments for grooms-to-be from manicure to massages

Hair raising

A soft touch

Face time

"Grooms today are more aware of their looks and how they want to be seen," says Gustav Fouche, Style Director at Mayfair salon Michael Van Clarke. Starting with the hair is always good. Here are our top dos and don'ts: Don't scrimp on hair care; health and shine is the key to great hair. A good quality product is essential to keep your hair healthy and strong and looking great all day. Do make sure you have a practice cut. Hair does need a few days to soften and settle in after a fresh cut, which can be anywhere from a few days, up to a week, depending on your hair. Getting a practice in ahead of time really lets you see when your hair will be at its best. Don't make a dramatic change of style just before your big day; you may be unlucky and find your completely different look doesn't come out well in the photos. Do discuss the feel of your wedding with your hairstylist, and let them help you achieve the best look for your wedding day.

Treat your skin to some pre-wedding day pampering. And we're not talking your face: Your hands "A lot of clients forget about their hands," says Louise Cantwell from Mayfair grooming retreat Gentlemen's Tonic. "They will be on show the whole time and they need to be in tip-top condition. It depends on the condition of the hands but we have various manicures to ensure soft, hydrated skin and clean, well cared-for nails. Your feet They can take a little longer to prepare so be sure to book at least a month before the big day; if you're going on a beach honeymoon getting your feet looking good is important. Follow up with another pedicure one to two weeks prior to the day itself.

Dr Kishan Modha on the various ways a groom can improve his confidence: Cosmetic tooth alignment Requires a brace and takes approximately 12 to 24 months. Porcelain veneers Can be done 8 weeks prior to your wedding; this treatment gives you the smile you have always wanted, and fast. Tooth bonding 2 weeks prior to your wedding; using HFO composite, this is a semi-permanent treatment to change the shape of teeth, close gaps and brighten. Fresh breath package 2 weeks prior to your wedding; includes the removal of stains and tartar build up, which causes bad breath. Plus examination, cancer screening, full oral hygiene scaling and jet polish, tongue scrapper and fresh breath mouthwash. Hollywood cut 1 week prior to your wedding; cosmetic reshaping to perfect your teeth. Enlighten home whitening One month prior to your wedding; Enlighten is a safe way to whiten your teeth, remove stains and feel more confident about your smile. Facial fillers 2 months prior to your wedding; to give your more jawline definition. Botox 2 weeks prior to your wedding; to soften lines or to provide a radiant facial glow.
