Denim and Diamonds raises awareness of mental illness

enim, diamonds, and cowboy hats were mandatory attire for a country and western themed dinner and dance gala hosted by the Milton Rotary Club at Country Heritage Park. Proceeds for the 2014 gala will go to worthy Milton Rotary projects and Milton STRIDE (Supported Training & Rehabilitation In Diverse Environments), a non-profit organization that helps the mentally ill get back in the workforce.

Among the success stories from Stride is Georgetown resident Lauren Boyce, who suffered from mental illness years after she experienced a stroke at age 9. At 16, Boyce dwelled heavily on the difficult cards she’d been dealt, which includes double vision and difficulty using her right arm.

“I became depressed, feeling that I couldn’t do anything properly and hated myself for trying,” she said However, Boyce was proud to declare to the crowd of more than 150 in attendance that she now has a drivers license and is gainfully employed.

“I’m proud of myself. I’m really proud. I have my drivers license and I have a job, which makes me feel more independent and allows me more freedom for me just to be me,” Boyce said. The Denim and Diamonds gala featured Rotary district governor Patsy Marshall, who drew on her eight years of full-time experience at Homewood Health Centre in Guelph as the staff ’s director of education.

“I tell you, when I worked in mental health for eight years, I learned a great deal. Not only about mental health and addictions, but I especially learned about the strength of people,” Marshall said. “As some of you may know, mental health presents itself in many forms, with anxiety disorders and depression being the most common. Mental illness is caused by a complex interplay of genetic, biological, personality and also environmental factors.

“There is good news for people with mental illness,” she continued. “Based on experience first hand, most individuals with mental illness recover well and are able to lead fulfilling lives in their community.”

ICCM hosts fashion show A

fun, sharply-dressed time was had by all at the Italian Canadian Club of Milton’s (ICCM) March 30 fashion show at the Teatro Convention Centre. Dressing the models for runway was Lesley Goertzen, a Milton fashionista who owns an in-house studio in Campbellville. “It’s very rewarding work,” Goertzen said.

Clothing for the fashion show was made by sister designers Naomi and Devorah Shapiro from Toronto. Angelo Posteraro from the ICCM said he hopes to make the fashion show an annual event.

“We’d like to make it an annual event in support of the Italian club of Milton,” Posteraro said. “We’re just trying to be a bigger part of the community. The Italian club is open to everybody; Italian and Italian at heart.”

Milton hosts International Transgender Day of Visibility event By Stuart Service | Photos by Denise Cooperwhite

L

ocal photographer Michelle Emson organized this year’s Milton edition of the International Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31 at Shoeless Joe’s, sharing her success story after solving a personal crisis of gender identity. Emson’s message is to stop hiding, be visible and live a life without fear of discrimination, violence or reprisal. “The whole purpose of today (March 31) is to raise that visibility. Is to say ‘Come out and meet us.’ At the end of the day, we have a beating heart like everyone else. We’re people,” she said. “Being visible increases awareness, increases that level of understanding and is going to lead ultimately to better education, better acceptance.” Emson said she thought long and hard as to whether to do business in Milton or whether to take her business into a neighbouring town like Guelph or Cambridge.

10 | Milton Villager

“I decided I should give Milton a chance,” she said. “I like Milton and I didn’t want to be driven out just based on what I thought other people were going to think. Operating a small business in Milton I thought was going to be really tough. In fact, it was quite the opposite. The community as a whole has been welcoming. Absolutely incredibly positive.” Emson said it wasn’t long ago that gender identity was an issue often turned into televised spectacles on Jerry Springer. “None of us particularly enjoyed that. It wasn’t helpful, it wasn’t constructive and it was out of proportion,” she said. Emson added that the conversation has evolved dramatically over that past decade. “What we’re seeing now is an exponential increase in more intelligent media coverage both on TV and in the press,” she said. “I want to reinforce that. I want to be a part of that by sharing my story.”

Milton Mall Kids’ Club

goes green for Earth Week

O

n the morning of Saturday April 19th, hundreds of children celebrated Earth Week at the Milton Mall, decorating eco-friendly cloth bags and watching a Mad Science demonstration. This event was held by the Milton Monkeys Kids’ Club - a club associated with the Milton Mall that holds monthly events for kids that are 4-12 years old. These events usually take place Saturday morning from 10 am to 12 noon and the kids take part in a craft, followed by a show that ties in with each month’s theme. Parents can register their children for the club online and children receive free gifts if they attend ten or more events. When their children are registered, parents receive a monthly newsletter and emails about upcoming events. As the parents relaxed, kids decorated beige eco-friendly totes with markers, to be used later for lunches, books, gym clothes and toys. After the kids made their craft, mad scientist Dr. Dare entertained the kids with card tricks and fascinating scientific demonstrations. Dr. Dare had children draw decorations on a styrofoam head, which he then disintegrated with a mysterious liquid which breaks down styrofoam.

“We need to get our youth more energized about the future and being more, kind of, friendly to our planet,” Dr. Dare said, when discussing the idea of children celebrating Earth Day. “Take, for example, styrofoam that just takes way too long to break down. It’s horrible for our environment. I think the faster we educate the kids about this, the better they’ll be with trying to come up with alternatives to make the world a better place and to, you know, sustain us a little bit longer here.” Cindy Sedge, the event organizer, said, “[Children are] our last hope. I think everybody else has pretty much pooched the planet. In their everyday life I think [children are] a lot more aware of things than we were in this generation [...] it’s just nice to reinforce that, if they would like to inherit something, they had better start at an early age to take care of it.” Join the Milton Monkeys Kids’ Club next month to celebrate Mother’s Day when the kids will be planting their own herb gardens. For more information about the club or to register, click on the Monkey logo at www.miltonmall.com or like Milton Mall on Facebook.

Milton Seniors 18 | Milton Villager

ROCK AND ROLL the night away

O

n the evening of April 4th, guests crowded the Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre for the Rock and Roll Dinner and Dance, a sold out event. The event, with the goal of providing a fun opportunity for seniors to socialize, featured a dinner, musical entertainment and dancing. A DJ played various artists from the 50s, including Elvis, the Beach Boys and The Beatles. He also serenaded the audience, crooning to each table. Seniors dined on pasta, schnitzel, salad and ice cream sundaes. Even before dessert was served, the guests were eager to start dancing. Soon they were slow-dancing, line dancing and doing the twist. As they danced, the seniors softly sang along with familiar songs. This was one of many monthly events held by the Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre to keep Milton residents over 55 entertained. These events usually include entertainment and a catered meal. Shannon Soule, the Supervisor of Recreation, says that the motivation behind the rock and roll theme was to have “an opportunity for [seniors] to dance, and something that appeals to their generation which is rock and roll.” The seniors were able to enjoy the food and entertainment for an affordable $20 admission.

Milton’s seniors are enthusiastic about these events; “They keep saying ‘can you make it later? Can you make it later?’”

Soule said, “because they would love to party even later and we’re like, ‘We can’t make it later,’ because we only have one staff person work and the rest are volunteers. So, if it wasn’t for our volunteers we wouldn’t be able to provide this program.” Previously this year, Miltonian seniors enjoyed a Coffee House, a Celtic Night, a Pancake Tuesday Brunch and The Annual General Meeting for the Seniors’ Centre.

“It’s a lot of fun and we have a good mix of ages,” Soule said, adding that ages range from 55 years old to adults in their 90s. She added, “You’ll see a lot of couples dance. You’ll see a lot of single older adults out on the floor. You’ll see them line dance. So regardless of what kind of music it is, they’re always out there.” Upcoming events at the Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre are a 90+ birthday party (for seniors over 90 years old) and the facility’s 20th anniversary on July 5. To find out more about the Milton Seniors’ Activity Centre, call 905-875-1681 or visit http://www.milton. ca/en/townhall/miltonseniorsactivitycentre.asp

Empty Bowls Fundraiser

By Elizabeth Kogan | Photos by Eva Mende-Gibson

id you know that six percent of households in Milton earn less than $20,000 per year? A statistic noted in the September 2013 Milton Transitional Housing – Community Profile that represents a harsh truth. On Sunday, March 30, 2014, the MinMaxx Hall of the Milton Centre for the Arts was engulfed by the aromas of savoury smelling soups such as butternut squash with pear, Italian wedding, roasted red pepper and many more delightful varieties. The goal of the “Empty Bowls” fundraiser, organized by Milton Transitional Housing (MTH) is to assist Milton’s homeless. The website for MTH states that is a communitybased charity providing bridge accommodation, support and counselling to those in Milton who are experiencing housing crisis as they work towards securing a stable home. According to studies conducted by Halton Region, it is estimated that as many as 450 people per year become homeless in Milton, or face the risk of homelessness. In speaking to Wendy Schau, a MTH board member, she expressed, “There’s a need in Milton. Unexpected events can happen in life: layoffs, marital breakups, as well as health changes. These things can happen to anyone. We offer housing and support from four months for up to two years. Our support model focuses on financial and counselling support which studies have suggested is quite successful.” Cathy Forbes, who attended the event with a friend of hers said, “I’m visiting a friend who lives in Milton and she

suggested we attend this fundraiser together. I like that the money goes to transitional housing. It’s nice to get together with friends and support a good cause.” One of the volunteers handing out soup bowls, Sarah Bradley, explained, “The bowls were painted at Simply Creative by volunteers and the finished creations are just beautiful. I must say, I’m having a fun time handing out bowls today.” Olivia Al-Joundi also handing out bowls added, “Sometimes we can take things for granted and events like this remind us of the need. To know you’re helping is a good feeling.” Wendy Schau took the microphone to thank the community for its support of the event and introduced new executive director Donna Danielli who eloquently stated, “Today is about you. We wouldn’t be here without you to support us.” To learn more about MTH and its initiatives, please visit: MiltonTransitionalHousing.Ca

Sam Sherratt’s Destination: Imagination Knoxville By Laura Steiner | Photo by Ann Kornuta

S

ince 1999 Destination Imagination (D.I) has influenced over 1 million participants. Elementary school students form teams of seven coached by a teacher to use their creativity to solve open-ended challenges. Beginning each year in September, students showcase their solutions against other schools in their area to go onto Global Finals. This year’s finals are in Knoxville Tennessee.

Three groups in Kimberley Paulson’s Grade 7 & 8 class at Sam Sherratt School have won the right to represent their school. One group did a structural challenge building a weight-bearing 7X4 inch structure made of Balsam Wood, and then had to integrate it into a skit. “We had the option to use fishing line, but we found out the fishing line chips at the wood.” Two characters in their presentation were rich, while four were poor. The structure represented a skyscraper, they wanted to build in the valley.

The process tests how kids take revisions from tournament judges. The feedback for the group building the structure was: “What would you do if you were a humanitarian?” explained Paulson. Their response was to initially make it comedic adding an ending with one character saying: “You can build your skyscraper someplace else,” and another character responded: “Isn’t that where those other poor kids live?” Olivia Nucifora said. Paulson took it a lot more seriously, and the group responded making it into an ending with a social conscience. “Even though you’ve lost easy

access to food and water doesn’t mean you can’t try to get it back. When the right people are involved, and the right amount of enthusiasm, wonders can be achieved” Christine Suvaina recited from memory. Another group is competing as a fine arts group. Their challenge was to choose an artist, and perform a skit based on their painting. They picked Frida Kahlo because they liked her story, and the painting they chose was her selfportrait. “It was kind of like making a comic strip, but visually” explained Savie Edirisinghe. The plot was about paintings that came alive illustrating Kahlo’s life, and realized they were stuck in a museum. The program has tested the students’ resilience. One of the challenges faced by the fine arts group was their setting at the provincial tournament. “It broke, and it actually fell on her head,” described fellow group member Simon Li. They made it through the tournament, “It was all because of our team effort.” They’ll be presenting in the Fine Arts’ division. They’ve had to raise their money for the trip. At press time, the crowd sourcing campaign needs $13,000 to be a success. “We are the best in Ontario, and I want them on an educational front to represent Canada in the world,” Paulson advocated.
