Dr. Roland A. Pattillo, noted gynecologic oncologist, professor, researcher and author, passed away quietly in his home after a long illness on May 3, 2023. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family members.

Dr. Pattillo attended Xavier University in New Orleans and earned a medical degree from St. Louis University in 1959. Dr. Pattillo completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at John Hopkins University in 1967. He was the first African American faculty member at Marquette University’s School of Medicine. of Wisconsin where he served as Vice Chair of the Department, in 1995 Dr. Pattillo relocated to Atlanta, GA as Interim Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM). He established and directed the Division of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology during his tenure at MSM.

With more than 100 peer reviewed journal publications, one book, and several book chapters, Dr. Pattillo is widely known for gynecology and oncology research. He received training as a fellow with George Gey, MD, at

Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gey is known for culturing the first immortalized cell line from a tissue sample during the treatment of Henrietta Lacks, a cervical cancer patient, which is chronicled in the best-selling book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”

Dr. Pattillo befriended the Lacks family and maintained a strong relationship over the years. In 2010, he and his wife, Patricia O’Flynn Pattillo, purchased a headstone for Henrietta Lacks’ unmarked grave in Clover, VA.

Rebecca Skloot, author of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”

identifies Dr. Roland Pattillo as her contact for the Lacks family. After reading the book, Oprah Winfrey bought rights to the movie which aired on television. Dr. Pattillo appears in that film. At MSM, Dr. Pattillo established the annual HELA Conference that brought medical professionals from throughout the United States and abroad.

Dr. Pattillo was a doctor’s doctor because of his passion and compassion for performing surgeries throughout the world, without compensation. He is also known for traveling to families of friends to

Mayor Cavalier Johnson, local leaders welcome first cruise ship of 2023 season

Recreational cruise passengers to visit Milwaukee throughout summer season

(Continued from pg. 1) help them identify the best doctors, researchers, trials, etc., to help their loved ones.

His expertise, which was sought worldwide, earned him a reputation as a trusted physician and colleague, for which he has received numerous awards and accolades. Dr. Pattillo also founded several gynecologic organizations, including Milwaukee’s Cream City Medical Society.

On Thursday, May 4, Mayor Cavalier Johnson and local leaders welcomed the Viking Octantis, the first cruise ship to visit Port Milwaukee as part of the 2023 season. Mayor Johnson was joined by Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Port Milwaukee officials, local tourism leaders, and Great Lakes recreational cruise partners.

The Viking Octantis’ arrival in Milwaukee began a 2023 summer season where 31 port calls by various cruise ships are planned, bringing an estimated 12,000 passengers to the city.

Operated by Viking cuise lines, the Viking Octantis can carry up to 378 passengers on voyages throughout the Great Lakes. This will be the second season where Viking will designate Milwaukee as an embarkation and debarkation port for the company’s Great Lakes itineraries. Viking will also be introducing a second, identical ship, the Viking Polaris, to the Great Lakes in 2023, doubling this cruise line company’s capacity in the region and creating more recreational tourism opportunities in the City of Milwaukee.

“Milwaukee is a great destination, filled with attractions and hospitality. People from around the globe are taking notice of our city,” said Mayor Johnson. “This is a won-

derful example of how local and regional partnerships are creating new excitement and activity in Milwaukee. I’m looking forward to more international cruise passengers traveling to America’s Fresh Coast this year, and beyond.”

Following two years of pandemic-related cancellations, Milwaukee’s Great Lakes cruise season returned with significant momentum and success in 2022. An unprecedented number of international passengers and cruise vessels traveled to or from Milwaukee last year. Learn more about the 2022 Great Lakes cruise season through Port Milwaukee’s Annual Report.

“Port Milwaukee’s Great Lakes cruise industry has elevated our profile within the community and around the world. More residents are

becoming familiar with Port Milwaukee’s work because of this new tourism sector, and we’re excited for more cruise ships and international travelers visiting our city in the years ahead,” said Jackie Q. Carter, Director of Port Milwaukee. “The Port is looking forward to another successful Great Lakes recreational cruise season in 2023.”

Viking will once again utilize the Port’s City Heavy Lift Dock this season as their docking location. The South Shore Cruise Dock, located immediately east of the Lake Express High-Speed Ferry terminal, will serve as the future port-of-call for vessels the size of the Viking Octantis and the Viking Polaris. Construction of South Shore Cruise Dock is expected to begin in 2024.

Dr. Pattillo is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Patricia O’Flynn Pattillo; sister, Carolyn Pattillo Davis; children–Catherine Pattillo (David Jefferson), Patrick Pattillo, Sheri Pattillo Johnson, Mary Pattillo, bonus children Todd ‘Speech’ Thomas; grandchildren—Daniel Pattillo (Rachel), Carlos Arriaga (Vicki), Camille and David Michael Jefferson, Vann III and Benjamin Johnson, Jahi and Zoe Renee Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives. Why Mother’s Day celebrations are so revered in the black community

Mother’s Day is upon us, and families all over the world celebrate the day by honoring their moms through a variety of ways, as we all ease into what may be a “new normal.”

Mother’s Day is celebrated across the country every year on the second Sunday in May, but this holiday has special importance to the African American family. It was declared a national holiday in 1914, and throughout its more than 100-year history, families have created ways to honor the day and create lasting memories.

A lot of Mother’s Day traditions center around the church, with church services kicking off Mother’s Day morning with announcements acknowledging matriarchs in the congregation and special performances from the choir honoring mothers. Many of these special songs have been performed and passed down generation to generation to keep Mother’s Day traditions sacred, outside of the Hallmark card grab bag of commercialism. While physical churches were closed during the pandemic, congregations shifted their services online to keep that sense of community and spirit alive, regardless.

Mother’s Day is special for not only mamas and future mamas, but also for families who use the holiday to honor the caregivers and nurturers of the black community. While some of us literally grew up with our “surrogate” mothers, all of us had some level of big sisters, “play” aunties, God-mamas, and cousins to help with our rearing. It often takes more than a village and for our community, those connections tend to run long and deep. As we look back at the many who helped to raise us, and especially our own mothers who may have had to play multiple roles and work multiple

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage®

jobs, to help keep us afloat, we take this day above all of the others, to celebrate those strong women.

Flowers are also an important gift around the day, and spring in general. Many mothers are gifted with roses or carnations to express gratitude for their sacrifices. Some moms decorate their homes in fresh flowers to bring that Spring energy indoors. The adventurous family will take the time to get their hands dirty and plant some lilies for their mom to blossom next year for their mom.

It’s clear that the way black folks come together for Mother’s Day resonates

throughout our communities and impacts how the holiday is commemorated. We also know, holiday or not, our mothers will continue to be celebrated for generations to come. Whether it’s the thoughtful gifts or the community built around church, black families carve out space to honor the mother figures in their lives in unique, and meaningful, ways on Mother’s Day and every day.

Wisconsin’s only black-owned bank celebrates its 98th annual meeting

Largest in more than 40 years

Columbia Savings & Loan Association held its Ninety-Eighth Annual Meeting with more than 60 members and guests attending, making it the savings and loan’s largest Annual Meeting in decades. Attendance was so great that Columbia had to rent space at a much larger facility to accommodate all the participants.

Lafayette McKinney reflected on the extraordinary turnout, “I have served on Columbia’s Board of Directors since 1983, and have never seen so many people at an Annual Meeting during my 40-year tenure.” He remarked that the turnout reflected the community’s deep and ongoing commitment to Wisconsin’s only blackowned bank and genuine interest in its new initiatives.

There were ample reasons for excitement as Ernest Jones, Board Chair and President & CEO, and newly appointed Executive Vice President Will Martin reported on the new strategies the Board and management have launched since October 2022 to grow the size of the bank. As of December 31, 2022, Columbia Savings & Loan Association had total as-

sets of $24.5-million. Since launching the Association’s growth strategies in February 2023, the new management team has raised an additional $4.5-million in new cash and commitments.

Martin announced Columbia Savings & Loan Association is well on its way to raising its goal of at least $10million in new funding. The

new monies will be used to support “100 by the 100th,” Columbia’s campaign to help 100 families become homeowners by the bank’s next Annual Meeting, in April 2024.

“Columbia Savings & Loan Association has been at the forefront of helping families of color become homeowners for nearly a century,”

stated Jones. “For every $1-million in new funds raised, Columbia can help 10 more families become homeowners in our community—often for less than they were paying in housing costs while renting.”

How is Columbia Savings & Loan Association successfully raising so much new funding?

Jones and Martin have developed a series of new partnerships with other banks and the corporate community.

Financial institutions and businesses have stepped up to become major depositors. In turn, Columbia is using those dollars to make more mortgages available for the community.

Port Washington State Bank Executive Chairman & CEO Steve Schowalter and Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC) Vice President of Community Affairs Corry Joe Biddle were among Co-

lumbia’s capital partners who spoke at the Annual Meeting.

“Our collaboration with Columbia has given us invaluable insight into the unique needs of Milwaukee’s northside, while allowing us to share our time, talents, experience, and funds with the Association,” offered Schowalter.

“I couldn’t be more excited about MMAC’s partnership with Columbia Savings and Loan,” added Biddle. “Meeting the members and other partners at the Annual Meeting reinforced for me that investment in Columbia has real economic impact for our community and the families working with the bank.”

A tribute to mothers: One family’s journey with Alzheimer’s Celebrating Carnell and Sabrina Grant of Milwaukee

Women are disproportionately impacted by Alzheimer’s and dementia, with nearly two-thirds (4.1 million) of American’s living with Alzheimer’s being women. This Mother’s Day we honor all mothers who are on this difficult journey, and the caregivers who support them. For Sabrina Grant Mother’s Day is a special time to honor her mother, Carnell, who has been living with Alzheimer’s for 17 years. Sabrina, a retired elementary school teacher, is the primary caregiver for her mother and provides 24-hour care. This is a familiar scenario, as more than one-third of dementia caregivers are daughters.

An empowering role model

“My mom is the greatest,” Sabrina said. “She raised nine children and three grandchildren. She always took such good care of us. I’m happy to take care of her. She was always giving back and was a great role model. She came to all our activities and volunteered at the elementary school for years. The kids called her the “Easter Egg Lady” because she always brought eggs at Easter. That was just her nature to bring joy. She also ran a cleaning business for 35 years and was active in giving back to the community through the Boys and Girls Club and the Elks Club. My parents also had great style and were members of the Cosmopolitan Club.

I remember them getting all dressed up for great balls.”

The caregiver journey

“My mom, turning 95 in July, has progressed through some difficult stages," Sabrina said. “She still lives in her home, but I’m either with her, or bring her to my house. I have two sisters who help out a few days a week and sometimes our babysitter helps as well.” Sabrina has been able to take advantage of the Alzheimer’s Family Caregiver Support Program (AFCSP) to assist her with respite care. The program, administered by the Alzheimer's Association Wisconsin Chapter, assists Milwaukee County family caregivers who are helping their loved

ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia live safely in their own home.

“One piece of advice I have for other caregivers is to always try to do things your loved one enjoys or used to enjoy in their prime,” Sabrina said. “My mom loves bingo and Uno, and I try to engage her in social activities like that. We also listen to music, try to exercise to keep her active and engaged and sometimes go out to eat. This Mother’s Day we’ll probably take mom out for a nice dinner to her favorite place, Red Lobster.”

On Mother’s Day as we celebrate mothers, aunts, sisters and grandmothers, and all the brave women who are on this journey, we are reminded of the importance of education and early diagnosis for those most significantly impacted.

The Alzheimer’s Association Wisconsin Chapter provides free education programs and support groups, and connects families to resources in their local community. They also offer a 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900 and online information at www.alz.org to support caregivers’ day or night.
