PREVIEW Emerging onto the scene to lead the Majors in 2006 is first year head coach, Mike DuBose. After a threeyear stint at Northview High School and Luverne High School in Alabama, DuBose will take the helm of his first collegiate team since the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2000. DuBose is preceded by David Saunders, who led the Majors to a 7-21 record in three seasons. Along with the addition of DuBose as head coach, Shannon Dawson (Offensive Coordinator), Aaron Pelch (D-Line/Special Teams), Lane Powell (Linebackers) and Ross Rutledge (Outside Linebackers) are new to the staff in 2006. “I think the leadership at the top is very strong,” DuBose said. “If everyone keeps falling in place, we have a good chance for a great future.” The Majors have the luxury of playing seven home games this season, including the much anticipated “Backyard Brawl” against Mississippi College to kick off the season on Sept. 2. The two teams will meet on a campus site for the first time in over 40 years. The longstanding rivalry renewed in 2000 – after a 41 year absence – with the Majors holding a 3-2 series advantage. Three of the Majors seven home games will be against SCAC opponents, with the Nov. 11 match-up against Trinity University slated for Homecoming. “Purple Pride Day” falls on Sept. 30 against Lincoln University, while “Family Weekend” is scheduled for Centre College on Oct. 7. The Majors return 14 starters from a year ago along with eight seniors. On the offensive side of the ball, the Majors return six including leading rusher, Tyson Roy. Roy, who is only a junior, accounted for four of the Majors’ 11 rushing touchdowns last season, while averaging 58.1 yards per game. He averaged just over 4.2 yards per carry, while rushing for 407 total yards and four scores. Taking the snaps behind center for the Majors is sophomore, Juan Joseph. The 6-foot-2, 178-pound, Edgard, La., native will take the starting role this season after throwing for 477 yards and three scores last season as a freshman. Joseph held a 118.53 QB rating, completing 35 of his 70 attempts for 68.1 yards/game. He’ll receive the starting nod, with sophomore Burt Pereira and freshmen Chris Graves and Edward Cantrell rounding out the depth chart. Leading all scorers last season and returning for his sophomore season is kicker/punter, DJ Mello. The Decorah, Iowa, native accounted for 29 total points last season, including 4-for-8 from field goal range and 17-for18 on extra point attempts. Dawson and his offensive staff of Wright, Fred McNair and David Johnson will introduce a whole new

2006 Millsaps Football

offensive system this season. “We’ll run an offense similar to Texas Tech,” Dawson said. “Airing it out is the only thing I know how to do. We’ll use a four-wide set and try and mix in a few things from a couple other big-time programs.” This year’s squad will have a core of 14 receivers, including wide receiver, Josh Hanna, who returns to the offense after playing defensive back last season. Hanna, Western Kentucky transfer Chris Jackson, AllSCAC honorable mention Eric McCarty and the speed of Kennedy Griffin will play a major factor in the success at the wide receiver position. The Majors will introduce seven new freshmen to the offensive line this season and must rely on the leadership of senior, Conell Phillips to help lead this year’s young squad. “We’re optimistic about the freshman class,” offensive line coach Jack Wright said. “In order for us to be effective, they must step up and be a factor.” On the defensive side of the ball, the Majors return eight starters from a year ago. The defense will play a major factor in the success of this year’s squad, after surrendering 35 points per game and 389 yards of total offense per game last season. All-SCAC second-team selection Ray Kline, Casey Younger, Ronnie Wheat, Canaan Farris, Marcus Harris, and senior defensive back EJ Johnson all totaled 40 or more tackles last season and bring in-game experience for the Majors. Also returning for Millsaps is sophomore Marcus Stokes, who returns after being hurt early in the 2005 season. “Stokes had a really good spring,” Rutledge said. “We expect him to play a big part in this year’s success.” Kline was the second leading tackler for the Majors last season, tallying 56 tackles (36 solo) and one sack, while Younger was the third leading tackler with 50 tackles (21 solo) and one sack. Wheat and Farris rounded out the top five with 45 and 43 tackles, respectively. Farris also led all linebackers with three sacks for minus 21 yards. The Majors however lose their top linebacker and leading tackler from a year ago, Rutledge, who contributed 68 tackles (40 solo) and one sack. Rutledge will assist Lane Powell with the linebackers this season, while he pursues his master’s in history. This year’s squad promises to have an explosive philosophy on offense, an aggressive, attacking approach on defense and a creative and innovative stamp on special teams. “We’re pretty young as a football team right now,” DuBose said. “They’re learning how to adapt to the system we’re in right now because it’s a different structure than what they had in the past. They’re doing a great job, and if they come ready to play and play hard and execute, then we, as a football team, will be successful.”

HEAD COACH

Mike DuBose

Head Coach First Season Opp, Ala. Alabama ‘74

E

merging onto the scene to lead the Majors in 2006 is first year head coach, Mike DuBose. After a three-year stint at Northview High School and Luverne High School in Alabama, DuBose will take the helm of his first collegiate team since the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2000. DuBose succeeds David Saunders, who led the Majors to a 7-21 record in three seasons. Prior to his coaching and playing days at Alabama, DuBose was a three-year letter winner in baseball and a four-year letter winner in football at Opp High School in Opp, Ala., where he helped lead his team to a 30-8-3 overall mark in football. While playing for Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama (1972-74), DuBose was a star defender for a Crimson Tide team that posted an overall record of 32-4, including three SEC Championships and one national title. He had the game of his career in 1972 against the University of Tennessee, where he recorded 20 tackles (two tackles for loss) and caused one fumble. For his efforts, DuBose received “SEC Lineman of the Week” accolades. DuBose ended his career with 129 total tackles (26 tackles for loss), 71 assists, eight forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and three pass breakups. His name still stands in the Tide record books as first all-time in forced fumbles in a season/career (four, 1972; eight career), second in career fumbles recovered (six) and tied for fifth with most career tackles for loss in a season (11, 1973). His coaching career began in 1975 as a graduate assistant for the Crimson Tide. After a season with Alabama, DuBose spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Fairhope High School and two seasons as the head coach/ athletic director at Prattville High School. DuBose began his collegiate coaching career as a defensive line coach at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1980. After two seasons with UTC, DuBose was offered the defensive line job at Southern Miss, which he accepted. In his only season with the Golden Eagles, DuBose was on the opposite sideline of the game that ended Alabama’s then 57-game home unbeaten streak in Nov. 1982. Several months later, DuBose was invited back to Alabama as a defensive line coach on the staff of new head coach, Ray Perkins. He spent four years at Alabama

DuBose was hired as Millsaps’ defensive coordinator in 2005 and succeeded David Saunders in 2006 as head coach. He and his eight-man coaching staff will try and revamp a Majors team that has not had a winning season since the 2001 season under then head coach, Bob Tyler. “My biggest concern is retaining student-athletes,” DuBose said. “We have the potential to be a really good football team. We had a good spring and a handful of commitments, now we just have to try and keep these guys here all four years.” Along with the addition of DuBose as head coach, Shannon Dawson (Offensive Coordinator), Aaron Pelch (D-Line/Special Teams), Lane Powell (Linebackers) and Ross Rutledge (Outside Linebackers) are new to the staff in 2006. “We have a really good staff that has the potential to be outstanding,” DuBose said. “Their knowledge of the game and how they approach it, their chemistry and the way they mead together is great. It all starts at the top with the staff.” DuBose is married to the former Polly Ann Martin. They have two children, Juli Keller and Michael. They have a son-in-law, GW Keller, a grandson, Will (11) and are expecting another grandchild in the near future.

under Perkins and later followed him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1987-89. He supplied the NFL with five firstround selections, five first-team all-Americans and ten all-SEC selections. DuBose once again returned to Alabama as defensive line coach from 1990-96 under head coach, Gene Stallings. With DuBose’s defensive scheme, the Tide ranked eighth or better in rushing defense four times, including the nation’s best in 1992. During the Tide’s 1992 National Championship season, DuBose helped tutor a defense that allowed just five rushing touchdowns on the season, while holding opponents to 55.0 yards/game. After Stallings announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 1996 season, DuBose took the reins of his first collegiate team. During his four year tenure as head coach at Alabama (1997-2000), DuBose led the Tide to a 24-23 record, including a berth in the inaugural Music City Bowl in 1998 and an SEC Championship and Orange Bowl berth in 1999. After a brief respite from coaching, DuBose was hired as head coach of the Northview High School football program in Dothan, Ala. During his only year there in 2002, the Cougars finished with an 0-10 record. After leaving Northview, DuBose spent two seasons at Luverne High School in Luverne, Ala., where he led the Tigers to a 20-7 record and State Runners-up in 2003.

S

hannon Dawson brings a whole new offensive scheme to the table this season, as he begins his first season as Millsaps offensive coordinator. “I’m excited to get the opportunity to do it myself on offense,” Dawson said. “I feel very fortunate to be an offensive coordinator at such a young age.” The Clinton, La., native started at quarterback for three years at Silliman high school, prior to receiving his undergraduate degree from Wingate University in May 2000. After graduation, Dawson spent one season at his alma mater coaching receivers before moving to Southland Conference member, Southeastern Louisiana to coach running backs for two seasons. David Johnson

Wide Receivers Second Season New Orleans, La. Nicholls State ‘94

avid Johnson begins his second year as wide receivers coach for the Majors, after a brief stay at St. Augustine high school and a three-year stint as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at O.P. Walker high school in New Orleans, La. In his time at O.P. Walker, Johnson coached seven 1,000 yard receivers, including current Louisiana State Tiger, Craig Davis. Davis enters his senior season as arguably the most sure-handed receiver on the LSU squad. Also in his time at O.P. Walker, he helped lead the team to the state championships – a first in Louisiana public school history. Prior to joining the Millsaps staff, Johnson’s time at St. Augustine was cut short due to Hurricane Katrina. He and his family were forced out of the area and took shelter in Oxford, Miss. He joined the Majors several months later after being offered the job from former head coach, David Saunders. Johnson knew Saunders from his playing career at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. While at Nicholls, Johnson lettered three years for the Colonels at wide receiver and finished his career as the seventh leading receiver in school history and third all-time in yards-per-catch. David and his wife, Akeia, will celebrate their five-year anniversary in December. They have three children, Jermaine (16), De’von (11) and 21-month-old Karaaz.

He holds almost all of Florida’s passing records, including passing yards in a season (3,269 in 1999), passing TDs in a season (60, 1998), passing TDs in a game (8, four times) and passing yards in a game (362, 2000). McNair also holds all of Carolina’s passing records and became the 13th quarterback in AFL history to surpass the 10,000-yard career passing mark (vs. Carolina in 2000). Over his eight-year career, McNair completed over 57 percent of his passes, while throwing for 16, 591 yards (8th all-time) and 291 TDs. Marcus Woodson

Defensive Secondary Second Season Moss Point, Miss. Mississippi ‘05

eturning for a second season with the defensive secondary is former University of Mississippi defensive back, Marcus Woodson. Woodson made his coaching debut last season, after former Ole Miss recruiting coordinator and Millsaps head coach David Saunders offered him the position in August of 2005. “I graduated from Ole Miss in May of ’05 and was blessed a couple months later to get the opportunity to coach at Millsaps,” Woodson said. The Mississippi native attended Moss Point high school where he not only stood out as an honor roll student, but also contributed on the football field as well. During his high school career, Woodson helped lead his team to a pair of state championships and was selected to play in the Bernard Blackwell Classic and the Mississippi high school all-star game. He also earned all-region and all-coast recognition after his senior season by the Biloxi Sun-Herald. At the college level, Woodson played in 18 games for Ole Miss, until knee injuries forced him to end his career in 2003. In his first season with the Majors, Woodson helped land Ray Kline and Ross Rutledge on the All-SCAC second-team as well as David Cutler and Josh Hanna as honorable mentions.

Jack Wright

Offensive Line Second Season Batesville, Miss. Arkansas State ‘01

J

ack Wright begins his second season on the Millsaps coaching staff and continues his work with the offensive line. Wright received his MBA from Arkansas State in 2001 and took a job at the University of Mississippi in the technology department. Wright didn’t pursue coaching until after his time at Ole Miss. “I had always been around football and really enjoyed the game,” Wright said. In his first season with Millsaps, Wright helped Conell Phillips earn All-SCAC first-team accolades for the second time in as many seasons. Along with Phillips, Jay Buck received All-SCAC second-team honors. Wright played high school football under his father, Willis at nationally-recognized South Panola, where he started on the offensive line all three seasons. 2006 Millsaps Football

For the first time in 47 years, Millsaps College and Mississippi College will renew its football rivalry on a campus site, with the sixth annual “Backyard Brawl” scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Harper Davis Field on the campus of Millsaps.. The longstanding rivalry renewed in the fall of 2000 – after a 41-year absence – with the Majors knocking off the Choctaws on a last second field goal, 20-19. The Majors, picked to finish last in the conference in 2000 and counted out by every sportswriter in the area, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the series rivalry. . The upcoming contest will mark the 44th meeting between the two teams, with history giving the Choctaws a 26-11 series advantage. The teams have also combined for six ties in 1923, ‘28, ‘35, ‘37, ‘56 and ‘58. . Although the Choctaws hold a commanding lead in the series, the Majors have won three of the last five contests, including a 9-0 win at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in 2004.

DIVISION III AWARDS

Presented annually by the Downtown Wilkes-Barre Touchdown Club, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; the Melberger Award is awarded to the Outstanding Division III football player in the country. The award program seeks to recognize the dedication and determination of the athlete who plays for the love of the game. He is, in every sense, a true student-athlete. In addition to the trophy, a contribution is made to the General Scholarship Fund of the recipient’s school. The Melberger Award is selected by a national media panel of 63. Three finalists are selected to attend the Club’s Annual Awards Banquet where the Melberger Award winner is announced. The trophy is named in honor of Clifford K. Melberger, President and CEO of Diversified Information Technologies, Inc. A star running back and outstanding performer on the gridiron for the Bucknell Bisons from 1957-1960, Melberger is an active community leader and volunteer. The trophy is a replica of an old-style leather football helmet crafted of anthracite coal. In addition to the Melberger Award, the Wilkes-Barre Touchdown Club also presents the John J. Chwalek National Championship Trophy to the NCAA Division III National Football Champions.

The Gagliardi Trophy

Presented annually by the J-Club of Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minn.; the Gagliardi Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding football player in NCAA Division III. The award program seeks to recognize the best player, while at the same time mirror the Division III philosophy of the well-rounded student-athlete. Recipients of the Gagliardi Trophy must exhibit excellence in football, academics and community service. Nominations will be submitted by the presidents of the 229 participating NCAA Division III colleges. The recipient is announced in conjunction with the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the Division III National Championship game, in December. The trophy is named after John Gagliardi, legendary coach of Saint John’s University. Gagliardi has over 325 wins in college football, more than any other Division III football coach. Sponsored by Jostens, Minneapolis, Minn., the trophy design features a sculpture of John Gagliardi and a player in a classic one-on-one sideline consultation.

ABOUT THE SCAC History of the SCAC--

What is the SCAC?

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was formed to provide an association through which the member institutions may encourage organized competition in intercollegiate sports among teams representative of their respective student bodies. Members of this conference share a commitment to priority of the overall quality of academic standards and quality educational experiences. The SCAC is currently comprised of Austin College of Sherman, Texas; Centre College of Danville, Ky.; Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colo.; DePauw University of Greencastle, Ind.; Hendrix College of Conway, Ark.; Millsaps College of Jackson, Miss.; Oglethorpe University of Atlanta, Ga.; Rhodes College of Memphis, Tenn.; The University of the South of Sewanee, Tenn.; Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas; and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas. The SCAC office is located in suburban Atlanta, Ga.

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was founded and began operation on September 1, 1962, as the College Athletic Conference (CAC). Centre College of Danville, Ky.; Southwestern at Memphis (Tenn.) (now known as Rhodes College); The University of the South of Sewanee, Tenn.; and Washington and Lee University of Lexington, Va., were the four charter members of the conference. Later in 1962, Washington University of St. Louis, Mo., became the fifth member and the CAC remained unchanged until 1972. Following membership changes throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the conference went through restructuring and renaming. With the addition of Millsaps College of Jackson, Miss., Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas, in 1988, Hendrix College of Conway, Ark., and Oglethorpe University of Atlanta, Ga., in 1991, membership reached a then all-time high of eight. In 1991, the conference renamed itself the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, its first fulltime commissioner Steve Argo was hired, and a conference office was established in Atlanta, Ga. The SCAC added Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas, in 1993 with participation beginning in the 1994-95 academic year. In 1997-98, the SCAC added DePauw University of Greencastle, Ind., with participation beginning in 1998-99. Just this past year, Austin College of Sherman, Texas and Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colo., were confirmed as members of the league with participation beginning in the 2006-07 academic year. Birmingham-Southern College of Birmingham, Ala., has been approved as the 12th member of the SCAC with play in 2007-08.

SCAC Organization--

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) is governed by the chief executive officers of the member institutions. This group is known as the Board of Directors, which meets twice a year and is ultimately responsible for all policies of the SCAC. The Athletics Directors Council is comprised of the senior male and female athletics administrators at each member institution. This Council meets twice a year and makes recommendations on legislation to the Board of Directors and accepts reports from the Sports Councils. The Sports Councils represent the 19 sports sponsored in the conference and includes the head coach, head athletic trainer and sports information director at each member institution. Each Sports Council meets annually to discuss policies and make recommendations to the Athletics Directors Council. The commissioner serves as the executive director and is responsible for assisting in the development, coordination and implementation of the conference’s policies. The commissioner’s office is also responsible for providing publicity and coordination of the public and media relations of the conference through the assistant commissioner for communications.

NCAA Division III--

Division III member institutions place special importance on the impact of athletics on the participants rather than on spectators and place greater emphasis on the students, alumni and special friends than on the general public and its entertainment needs. Athletics programs in Division III are controlled, financed and staffed through the same general procedures as other departments of the institution. These programs also ensure that participants receive the same treatment as other students in that they have no unique privileges in admissions, academic advising, course selection, grading, living accommodations or financial aid.

A bell, donated by the Norfolk and Western Railway, was adopted as the SCAC’s “President’s Trophy” and serves as the symbol for the conference. The President’s Trophy is displayed for one year on the campus of the school with the combined men’s and women’s athletics program that accumulates the highest points total in the all-sports race established by the conference. The bell is awarded at the conclusion of the Spring Sports Festival. SCAC member institutions are committed to sponsoring a variety of varsity sports to maximize opportunities for student participation. SCAC schools also operate under the principle that participation in sports should be solely from student interest and enjoyment of athletic competition, and that no financial aid shall be given to any student which is conditional upon athletic ability or participation in intercollegiate sports. SCAC member institutions support students in their efforts to reach high levels of performance by providing them with adequate facilities, competent coaching and appropriate competitive opportunities with students from similar institutions.

HARPER DAVIS TRIBUTE

H

arper Davis, former head football coach and athletic director, was honored during Homecoming 2004 festivities in October with the renaming of Alumni Field in his honor. More than 300 of his former players and friends joined Davis, B.A. 1947, and former assistant coach Tommy Ranager on the field for the ceremony. Davis, a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, holds the record for the most wins in Millsaps football history and is also a member of the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame. He is a 1989 inductee to the Millsaps Sports Hall of Fame. During the Captain’s Dinner, a Homecoming event for former players, a video entitled Harper Davis: A Millsaps Treasure was shown. According to Rick Cleveland, longtime sports columnist for the Clarion-Ledger, naming the field . for Davis was a particularly appropriate honor. “He fertilized it, watered it, mowed it, lined it, coached and taught on it,” Cleveland wrote. “He and Tommy Ranager were a two-man coaching staff and grounds crew. And that was enough because

Millsaps won 138 games and lost only 80 from 1964 until 1988, when Davis stepped down.” “It’s funny, we spent all that time keeping that grass just right and now they’ve got artificial turf,” Davis told Cleveland. “But I can’t tell you how honored I am. I have received a lot of awards and honors in life, but this is . the highest honor I’ve ever received.” Davis spent 25 seasons at the helm of the Majors that included an undefeated 9-0 season in 1980. Davis led the Majors to their first NCAA Division III playoff appearance, a win against Colorado College in 1975. Following an All-Southeastern Conference career as a defensive back at Mississippi State University, Davis was selected by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the draft in 1950. Davis also played for the Green Bay Packers in 1951. A native of Clarksdale, Davis is in his 38th season of coaching, currently serving as an assistant football coach at Jackson Academy.

ADMINISTRATION Dr. Frances Lucas

President Seventh Year B. A., Mississippi State M. A., Ph. D, Univ. of Alabama

On behalf of the Millsaps College community, I welcome you to Harper Davis Field. At Millsaps College, our student-athletes are dedicated to excelling on the field of play and in the classroom. Whether you are enjoying Millsaps football for the first time or have watched the Majors compete for many years, your support is greatly appreciated. Athletic teams are called the Millsaps Majors in honor of the school’s founder, Major Reuben Webster Millsaps. Millsaps encourages involvement in sports; more than 70% of our students participate in either varsity or intramural competition. Our student-athletes compete in one of the most academically rigorous conferences in the nation against premiere national liberal arts colleges and universities. As a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Millsaps competes in football, baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. As an NCAA Division III competitor, the College abides by the Division III requirement of not awarding athletic scholarships. As we seek to continue a legacy of excellence at Millsaps, I am encouraged by the wide range of athletic, cultural, and spiritual events offered by Millsaps College to the Jackson metropolitan community. I urge you to visit our web site at www.millsaps.edu to discover numerous life-long learning opportunities for our students and the community.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Wise is a 1989 graduate of Millsaps College who earned a B.A. degree in economics. During his time as a student, Wise earned multiple varsity letters in basketball and golf, while earning a graduate degree in science sport administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2000. “Tim is a seasoned, committed and valued administrator and educator,” vice president and dean of students Dr. Brit Katz said. “As an alumnus, his devotion to the College is evident.
