STOP Foreign Aid

By Joshua Cook

THEY CAN HATE US FOR FREE

Jan Helfeld, investigative journalist, asked Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) if he was against foreign aid: “No,” Graham said. “Smart foreign aid, I’m against giving money to dictators, but we must invest in the world. Africa, George Bush did a great thing by helping people avoid being decimated by AIDS and malaria. I do believe the 1% of the budget we have in foreign assistance needs to be maintained.” “But foreign aid is redistribution of wealth right?” asked Helfeld.
“No, it’s not,” said Graham. “It’s helping friends and allies at the time you need friends and allies.” Reuters reported that the U.S. State Department and foreign aid budget escaped devastating cuts in a fiscal 2012 spending plan that Congress has approved, and according to the Huffington Post, the United States recently has

continued to pump around $50 billion in aid to other countries each year. Ironically, those countries who receive the most foreign aid from U.S. taxpayers are the ones who hate America the most. Here are the top recipients of U.S. foreign aid who harbors anti-American sentiments according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center.

Foreign Aid is Redistribution of Wealth

In contrast to Graham’s statement above, South Carolina State Senator Lee Bright told theGreenvillePost.com, “Foreign aid is, in the strictest sense, a form of redistribution of wealth, since it is a transfer of wealth from one

group of people to another. As such, it should only be permissible when the action is vital to our national interests. For instance, we should not be in the practice of sending American treasure abroad when the recipients are historically inclined to violent, anti-American action (i.e. the Muslim Brotherhood). There needs to be an attitude of “America first” that keeps in mind the consequences of inappropriate foreign entanglements and the buildup of national debt.” Sen. Mike Lee (RUtah) echoes Bright’s statement when recently asked if he is in favor of taxing American citizens in order to give it to foreigners. “I think there are so many problems with that. And I think a lot of Americans have a problem with that, too.” Concerned citizens continue to voice their frustration with the U.S. government funding countries with ties to radical Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood, while states in the U.S. continue to suffer economically.

Senator Graham’s Home State Suffers Economically

Recently Forbes.com called South Carolina one of the 11 ‘Death Spiral’ states. Forbes tells its readers not to invest, buy bonds, or buy real estate in South Carolina because its taxes are projected to increase in order to support all the residents that depend on the government. Forbes’ math is simple. What gets you on this “death spiral” lists is when you have more takers than makers, when you have more people dependent of the government via welfare and government jobs than private sector jobs. Liberty-minded conservatives are calling on Congress to stop funding other foreign countries with taxpayer dollars, especially when the U.S. continues to sink deeper into debt. During the 2012 Republican primary, Ron Paul said,

“Foreign aid should be the easiest thing to cut. It’s not authorized in the Constitution that we can take money from you and give it to particular countries around the world. To me, foreign aid is taking money from poor people in this country and giving it to rich people in poor countries.” Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman said that “government debt is an unpaid tax bill and must be paid by confiscating money from future workers or from private property.” America has a $17 trillion dollar deficit and Americans are disturbed by their government continuing to print money to subsidize foreign powers while stacking the financial burden onto their children and future generations. Americans are also disturbed by the Obama administration not following U.S. laws regarding foreign aid. FOREIGN AID, cont’d. on Page 25

Stunning upset

No one thought Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, could actually lose. His primary challenge in his suburban Richmond district, from a local economics professor named David Brat, was thought to be nominal. No sitting majority leader has lost a primary since the position was invented in 1899. Cantor, though unloved by many in his party and in Congress, was seen as the speaker-in-waiting whenever John Boehner decided, or was forced, to hang it up. But all those assumptions went out the window Tuesday night, when Cantor shockingly lost—and by a wide margin. With 97 percent of the vote counted, Brat had 56 percent of the vote to Cantor’s 44 percent. HEALTH

Liberal movie stars By Richard Matz Publisher Why are so many movie stars liberals and why do many of them support socialist agendas? I can’t figure it out. Our capitalist system has allowed movie stars to achieve their dreams here in the United States. Here and only here can they achieve those dreams and enjoy all that comes with those successes yet those very people who have profited off our capitalist system are supporting socialist politicians and ideas. It makes no sense. Do they feel guilty that they have so much that they don’t want anyone else to live the American dream now? Socialism equals the redistribution of wealth. Here’s a creative approach to redistributing wealth as offered in a local newspaper recently. “Today on my way to lunch, I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read ‘Vote Obama, I need the money.’ I laughed. “Once inside the restaurant, my server had on an ‘Obama 12’ necktie. Again I laughed, as he had given away his political preference also. Just imagine the coincidence. “When the bill came I decided not

to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief when I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need — the homeless guy outside. “The server angrily stormed from my sight. I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10, and told him to thank the

server inside as I had decided that a homeless person deserved the tip money more. “The homeless guy was grateful. At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment, I realized the homeless guy was grateful for money he did not earn. The waiter was angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient need-

ed the money more. “I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.”

On-base fast food outlets get temporary reprieve from new wage rules From MilitaryTimes.com The Labor Department has pulled back — at least temporarily — from new minimum wage rules that had led several fast-food restaurants to end their contracts on military installations and prompted others to possibly follow suit. Labor officials are “reevaluating” wage determinations for fast food workers and expect to “reissue industry-specific fast food wage determinations in the near future,” according to a departmental announcement sent to interested parties and

HOTELS

contracting offices. At issue are recently implemented Labor Department rules for fast food workers on federal contracts under the Service Contract Act that require an increase in their minimum wage, varying by region. The rules also require payment of new, additional “health and welfare” benefits at a rate of $3.81 per hour. In a request for a waiver from these new wage rules regulations, the Navy noted that in six areas in Florida, California and Virginia, the increase in the new mandated hourly

wage ranges from 72 percent to 76 percent. Last year, DoL decided that fast food workers under federal contracts would be subject to these requirements, and included the codes in their wage determinations, although they had not been in the past. DoL has now removed the codes for fast food workers from these wage determinations. With those rules now removed, contracting agencies will have to subWAGE RULES, cont’d. on Page 24

So when you hear mention of the pink cloud, you might not assign much importance to it. That would be a huge mistake. Of course we aren’t talking about an actual pink cloud; that intensely beautiful mass of water vapor you see hanging in the sky at dusk. Rather, in the context of recovery, the pink cloud refers to a state of mind. Mention of the pink cloud is found on page 113 of the Alcoholics Anonymous text Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, which describes the feeling you experience when you finally admit that you are powerless over alcohol or drugs and that your life has become unmanageable. Covert operation of the ‘secret handshake’ captured The custom is as fleeting as it is elusive. In a matter of a split second, the entire exchange is over, and the people who witnessed the covert operation often never even knew it happened. A challenge coin, tucked in the palm of the United States president, is passed to a member of the military in a seemingly ordinary handshake. For photojournalists who cover the president, immortalizing the exchange that takes place during that ‘secret handshake’ in a still image is something of a white whale. It’s exceedingly rare that clear photos of such a delivery are captured.

Yet, just two weeks ago, the feat was pulled off twice -- on consecutive days. President Obama paid a three-day visit to California, and on his way out to the West Coast, he stopped in Arkansas to meet with families there whose lives were devastated by a recent outbreak of deadly tornadoes. Moments after the president touched down at Little Rock Air Force Base, veteran Associated Press photographer Susan Walsh managed to snap a photo of President Obama making the hand off to Col. Patrick Rhatigan, commander of the 19th Airlift Wing.

Marine is 8th living recipient of Medal of Honor

3rd annual ‘Freedom to Ride’ event

By Richard Sisk, military.com The White House announced Monday that Marine Lance Cpl. Kyle Carpenter will become the eighth living recipient to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for valor. On Nov. 21, 2010, while on guard duty in the Marjah district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province, Carpenter dove on a Taliban grenade to save another Marine. His wounds were so severe that he was listed as “P-E-A” (Person Expired on Arrival) when the medical evacuation helicopter got him to the aid station. Carpenter survived even though he flat-lined in the course of one of the 30 surgeries he endured during recovery. Carpenter survived and on Monday the White House announced that he would be awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama at a White House ceremony on June 19. Carpenter, 24, of Flowood, Miss., will be the eighth living recipient of the nation’s highest award for valor from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He will also be the third Marine to receive the Medal of Honor since Sept. 11, 2001.

Pentagon program would enlist illegal immigrants By Chris Carroll, Stars and Stripes WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is reviewing a program that allows qualified noncitizens to enlist in the military, and officials say they’ll consider expanding it to cover some who now live in the United States illegally. With legislative efforts stalled that would allow undocumented foreign nationals seeking citizenship to enlist in the military, the Pentagon and the White House are looking at alternatives, the Defense Department’s head of personnel said Monday at a Congres-

sional hearing in Chicago. “We look forward to the time when we’ll be able to grant more individuals the opportunity to serve this great nation,” said Jessica Wright, acting undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. The Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program, or MAVNI, has been used by the services to enlist nearly 3,000 foreign nationals with vital language and medical skills since 2009. The program currently excludes undocumented immigrants, but federal

law gives the Secretary of Defense wide leeway in accepting military members deemed “vital to the national interest.” Wright said DOD believes in “moving forward” on defining U.S. vital interests. Allowing undocumented foreign nationals raised in the United States to enlist would provide a larger pool of qualified applicants, as well as more diversity within DOD, she said. Durbin for years has pushed immigration reform that would, among other things, allow children brought to the United States illegally to gain citizenship through college education or military service. Immigration reform legislation has passed the Senate but is stalled in the House of Representatives. Some House Republicans have bashed such efforts, saying they reward lawlessness. “Our nation’s military is full of dedicated men and women and to disrespect them by rewarding illegal aliens with citizenship is an insult,” Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said in a recent statement. About 30,000 foreign nationals currently serve in the active-duty U.S. military as well as the Guard and reserve components. The Defense Department announced today that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel had nominated Dunford, who currently commands coalition troops in Afghanistan as head of the International Security Assistance Force, to be the 36th commandant. Dunford, 58, previously served as the 32nd assistant commandant of the Marine Corps under Gen. Jim Amos from 2010 to 2012. During his 37-year Marine Corps career as an infantry officer, Dunford has spent considerable time in both post-9/11 combat theaters. Dunford’s nomination must still be confirmed by the Senate during a hearing process expected to take place later this year. If he is confirmed, he will likely be installed as the next commandant this fall.

How Kawhi Leonard revived the Spurs’ fading dynasty The shy, reticent California kid responsible for transforming the San Antonio Spurs, delivering a gassed dynasty its second wind, had come to the franchise with brazen strength, a stout spirit and a flawed shot. Hours after the NBA draft three years ago, the Spurs hurried Kawhi Leonard through his “Welcome to the NBA” news conference and out onto the practice court with shooting coach Chip Engelland. As the clock lurched toward midnight on July 1, Engelland worked to change Leonard’s release point, reshaping his shot and retraining his mind to trust what suddenly felt so awkward. Time was running out together, and soon the Spurs would leave a 20-yearold to administer his own reclamation. No coaches, no calls, no contact. “He had come in, worked with Chip for three days and then – the lockout happened,” Spurs general

manager R.C. Buford told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday night. “There was intention in the [shooting] prescription given him. It was not just drill work.” Five months passed, the lockout ended and it didn’t take long for the Spurs to realize Leonard had dutifully done the work asked of him and returned a different basketball player. In the Spurs’ wildest dreams,

they imagined Leonard as a relentless rebounder and a determined defender. Yet once Leonard developed a shot, he had a chance to be a star. Most of all, the Spurs had a chance to retool the Big Three, supplement the supporting cast and make a run again. Leonard had 29 points, two steals and two blocked shots in a telltale 111-92 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Leonard did a magnificent job on LeBron James, holding him to 22 points and playing a part in disrupting him into seven turnovers. No one could see this Spurs resurgence

coming on Tuesday night, the way no one could see Leonard becoming this kind of a star, this kind of a franchisechanger in the winter of Tim Duncan’s and Manu Ginobili’s careers.

“He doesn’t talk much,” the Spurs’ Tiago Splitter said. “But he plays great.” Leonard is the reason the Spurs are chasing championships again. He changed everything for the Spurs. He gave them size and strength and athleticism to partner with his calculating, cunning basketball mind. Eventually, he gave them a startling offensive game to go with his stifling defense. Against Oklahoma City and Miami, he gave them a defender for Kevin Durant and LeBron James. Yes, Kawhi Leonard gave the Spurs a chance again. “You could’ve never predicted this,” Buford said. No one ever saw him coming on draft night three years ago. Before that draft, Leonard had to slow down his workout schedule with an Achilles

and ankle injury, forcing him to skip a late June session with the Milwaukee Bucks. Between the poor shooting and those injury doubts, there was an uneasiness of teams on draft night. This gave the Spurs a chance. Leonard had been sluggish in Games 1 and 2 of these Finals, and Popovich pushed him to come out fiercely on Tuesday night. He had done it a year ago against Miami. They needed it again now. Within minutes, Leonard had made Game 3 his own. Within the night, the Spurs had a 2-1 series lead and regained home-court advantage. As it turns out, Leonard is the perfect Spur: relentlessly dedicated to his craft, and painfully private. Three years later, Leonard had been the best player on the floor in Game 3 of these NBA Finals, had made LeBron James uncomfortable. Perhaps only the imagination and ingenuity of these San Antonio Spurs could’ve ever considered the possibilities of Kawhi Leonard. Out of nowhere, out of a freefall, the kid changed everything. From Duncan to Parker, Ginobili to Popovich, this kid could make them champions again. Almost there, again. Almost. www.MilitaryPress.com • editorsdesk@militarypress.com

Sterling-Silver: The Clippers saga By Richard Matz, Publisher Donald Sterling has decided to sue the NBA after all. But I have a much better idea for Donald. With his $2 billion dollars, Donald should start his own basketball league. Just think, the mighty NBA challenged by the DBA... not “Doing Business As,” its “Donald’s Bad A--es.” I’d love to be Donald’s very first pick in his new DBA draft. If he’ll pay me anywhere from say $250,000 to $5 million per year, he can call me every negative, racist, filthy name he can think of. I’ve talked with a bunch of my buddies, publishers and writers and we all agree… money talks and BS walks. There will need to be a few bases Donald will have to cover to keep him out of hot water in his new league. First, Donald will need to be careful when naming the teams in his league. He’ll have to eliminate all colors

— red, white, yellow, black, brown, etc. He can’t use the names of mammals… like bears, tigers, badgers, and mongooses, just in case the mammals take offense and file suit. Then you’re right back where you started from. Second, if any of the team members are married and want to fool around on the side, they must first get approval from their spouses (there we’ve covered that base). And if our girlfriends want to bring any other types of mammals to the game, they need not ask our permission nor will we be able to chastise them. Aha! Now we get that one covered. So let’s see, the only thing left is to make sure that none of our private conversations are used against us. We must only whisper in the ears of elderly, hard of hearing, and foreigners who don’t understand the English language.

The priest listens and then asks, “Is there anything else?”
The old guy says, ‘’During the war, when I was young, a beautiful German girl came to my farm after escaping and asked me if I would hide her. I told her I would if she provided me with sexual favors.”
The priest replies, “Don’t worry about it. It was wartime and you both were under a lot of pressure.”
The old guy says, “Does that mean that I have to tell her that the war is over?”

Photo trap

A motorist gets caught in an automated speed trap that photographs his car.
He later receives a ticket in the mail for $40 with a photo of his car.
Instead of payment, he sends the police department a photograph of $40.
A few days later, he gets a letter from the police department with a picture of handcuffs.

Name game

A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Amal.” The other goes to a family in Spain, they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, “But they are twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Amal.”

Drowning

Three boys walk through the woods and suddenly hear cries for help. They follow the sound to the lake and see President Obama drowning. The boys jump into the water and drag him to shore. Obama asks the boys how he can repay them. The first boy says, “I want a boat.” The second boy says, “I want a

Cont’d. from Page 8 Owning the fact you are powerless over your behaviors marks the beginning of recovery. When your ego stops calling the shots, horror gives way to hope. An enormous feeling of relief follows surrender. The bag of bricks you’ve shouldered for so long is lifted, awakening intense emotions long anesthetized with chemicals. You enter the miracle phase of recovery. You’re floating on a cloud; an intensely beautiful pink cloud. However, there is a tendency at this point to feel so victorious that you stop doing the work, Instead you want to celebrate your newfound freedom by shouting out to anyone who will listen. A.A. describes this person as one who completes Step-One (surrender) and immediately skips to Step-Twelve (sharing the message with others) without doing any of the work in-between. You can also think of it as being naive, lazy or overconfident. You might be sober, but you haven’t identified your triggers or cravings nor learned healthy coping skills. You haven’t set things right with the people you wronged. You haven’t developed a new way of living. This is tough stuff that takes time. Eventually life tap-dances on your head. You’re jolted back to reality by issues — both good and bad — which you haven’t the skills to handle. So you lose faith in the recovery process, sink into depression, and relapse.

recovery and cotton candy, are addicting! Keith Angelin, MBA, CADC-II, CNDAI, is a Master’s level, board-certified alcohol & drug counselor, and nationally certified intervention specialist. He can relate to the worst in addicts because he was considered hopeless myself. His 14-year battle with drugs and alcohol included multiple overdoses. His recovery compelled him to re-evaluate his life and share the miracle with others. Recently he authored the “At Home Recovery Workbook.” Learn more at www.InterventionRx.com.

Or not. With all due respect to A.A., that is a myth! The truth is, you can ride your pink cloud for the rest of your life. My miracle began October 21, 2008. Life sober has been intensely beautiful ever since. Of course there are challenges. But recovery teaches that you can overcome anything so long as you keep things in perspective, stop trying to control everything and focus on just those things you can change by using the tools (i.e. Steps) you develop. Let me assure you, the worst day sober is infinitely better than the best day high. Simply work a recovery program — rigorously, honestly, humbly — and you will find yourself riding atop your very own pink cloud. Then, whether or not you ever give up this intensely beautiful state of mind will be your choice alone. directly by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, not by contract. Russell Beland, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for military manpower and personnel, had sent a letter to DoL April 8 asking for an exemption from the wage regulations. In that letter, Beland said Navy and Marine Corps exchange officials estimate that unless relief is granted, up to 390 fast food concession operations would close on installations across the U.S. and its territories, with a loss of nearly 5,750 jobs, many held by military family members and veterans. labor costs, because under most contracts they can’t charge more than is charged by similar services within a specified radius of a military installation, according to an April 10 letter to DoL signed by Reps. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee’s personnel panel, John Kline, R-Minn., chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, and 38 other lawmakers. The lawmakers asked DoL to exempt some military morale, welfare and recreation and exchange operations, such as fast food concessions, from the wage regulations affecting federal contractors on military bases.

“Should these policy changes be fully implemented, we are concerned they will eliminate jobs, negatively impact recreational services on military bases, and limit the dining options for service men and women on military installations,” the lawmakers wrote. Navy and Marine Corps exchange officials estimate a combined loss of about $27 million a year in profits associated with food service sales alone. The companies aren’t paid by the federal government; they rely on the revenue they receive from their customers, and provide revenue payments to the exchange systems that help support MWR programs.

FOREIGN AID

Cont’d. from Page 4 Last year, Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC) and U.S. Tim Scott (RSC) spoke to a large crowd at a Tea party meeting in Greenville, S.C. TheGreenvillePost.com’s Joshua Cook asked both Sen. Scott and Congressman Duncan why the U.S. continues to give 50 billion taxpayer dollars in foreign aid to counties who hate us. Sen. Scott said, “Until we get to that point, myself, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and others take a strong stand on questioning what do we get on the return on investment for the money that we are giving out in this world.” Duncan agreed with Sen. Scott and elaborated further. “We must stop giving money to countries that hate us, they can hate us for free. We got to quit funding Islamic extremist and radicals…if I had my way, we would not fund the Muslim brotherhood at all” Duncan said.

helping to develop, we put off hard budget choices here at home. “The status quo creates co-dependency and financial risk at home and abroad.” The news arrives as lawmakers in Washington battle over the conditions for increasing the nation’s ability to borrow money before defaulting on its obligations. The government reached its $14.3trillion borrowing limit last month and both parties agree that spending cuts are needed, although Republicans refuse to raise taxes that Democrats insist on. President Obama has met with both sides over the issue, but no progress has been made. The State Department did not comment.
