Robert Gates’ tell-all book rattles White House, Congress Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates set off shockwaves in Washington with accounts from his upcoming memoir, in which he unleashes blistering criticism of Congress and his former colleagues in the Obama administration.

He also claims the President lost faith in his own Afghanistan policy. Gates’ comments come in his memoir “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War,” set to be released this week. The New York Times and the Washington Post, which obtained copies of the book before its release, reported that Gates also questioned the President’s support for the troops’ mission in Iraq. Continued from Page 3 According to the New York Times account, Gates writes, “[Obama] eventually lost faith in the troop increase he ordered in Afghanistan, his doubts fed by top White House civilian advisers opposed to the strategy, who continually brought him negative news reports suggesting it was failing.” Gates, a Republican appointee of President George W. Bush who stayed on into Obama’s administration, also writes of a pivotal 2011 meeting in which Obama questions the abilities of Gen. David H. Petraeus. “As I sat there, I thought: The president doesn’t trust his commander, can’t stand Karzai, doesn’t believe in his own strategy and doesn’t consider the war to be his…For him, it’s all about getting out,” Gates writes. A source familiar with White House thinking on how to respond to what’s

in Gates’ memoir told CNN that White House officials have been in meetings on the issue and were reaching out to allies to defend the President against the claims. The source said they are being careful not to attack Gates directly, thinking that will backfire. Officials believe Obama’s foreign policy legacy is strong because of his Afghanistan policies and the killing of Osama bin Laden, and that Gates’ accusations don’t hurt with the Democratic base. A White House official called attention to two parts of the book that reflect positively on the President. In The Washington Post article, Gates said of Obama’s chief Afghanistan policies, “I believe Obama was right in each of these decisions.” “I never doubted Obama’s support for the troops,” Gates writes. The official, however, did not highlight the rest of the sentence, which says “only his support for their mission.” A former White House official contested the excerpts saying, “I thought the President was a close ally of Gates. It’s disappointing, because if Gates had issues you would’ve expected him to raise them. When I spoke to Gates about the president he was always effusive.” National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the President “deeply appreciates Gates’ service” and is open to differing points of view from his national security team.

A senior U.S. military official involved in some of the events described in the book expressed dismay with Gates, telling CNN that if Gates had been in uniform and felt that the President and his staff were deficient, he would have had an obligation to resign. He noted some may feel Gates also had the same obligation given that he signed orders sending troops off to war. This official was directly involved in Afghanistan troop surge discussions. He was adamant the military command-

ers did not “game” the President on the numbers, but they came to realize Obama felt that way. Republican Sen. Jeff Flake tweeted in response to reports of the memoir, criticizing the timing of the former defense secretary’s comments.

Criticism of Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden

Gates was also critical of Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, recounting a conversation between Obama and Clinton suggesting political motives for their positions on Iraq.

more severe

For as scathing as Gates was in describing the Obama administration, the former defense secretary said none of the difficulties he had with the executive branch “compared with the pain of dealing with Congress,” a body he describes as phony, self-centered and narrow-minded. “Congress is best viewed from a distance — the farther the better — because up close, it is truly ugly,” Gates wrote in a piece in the Wall Street Journal, which was adapted from his book. “I saw most of Congress as uncivil, incompetent at fulfilling their basic constitutional responsibilities (such as timely appropriations), micromanagerial, parochial, hypocritical, egotistical, thin-skinned and prone to put self (and re-election) before country.” Gates opened the piece by writing that in the numerous times he testified before Congress, he found himself “tempted to stand up, slam the briefing book shut and quit on the spot” because of the “rude, insulting, belittling, bullying and all too often highly personal attacks” one has to endure during congressional testimony.

Why he wrote the book— now

Critics of the memoir blasted Gates for publishing the critique in the middle of the Obama’s second term, saying the more appropriate move would have been to wait until after his former boss leaves the White House in 2016. A source close to Gates noted that he’s a historian by nature and wanted to document what went on but didn’t want to wait because he believed the content of his book is all still relevant and should be discussed real time, especially issues of war and the troops. The dysfunction in Washington and the way commanders and generals were treated really upset him, the source added. Gates disagrees that his decision to release the book now is disloyal. In fact, he believes just the opposite and stands by all of it, the source said. As for Gates’ stinging criticism of Congress, the source said Gates had the most disdain for the House Foreign Affairs Committee, though he didn’t give specific names of lawmakers. n

nuclear threat becomes reality

FUKUSHIMA In 2011, Japan was hit with a horrible tsunami that caused Fukushima’s nuclear plant meltdown. Today, there is over 400 liters of contaminated water being created daily, and it’s hit the shores of California. Since the nuclear disaster, infant mortality rates in the U.S. have increased by more than 35% according to a court statement by Dr. Sherman with independent scientist Leuren Moret, MA, PhD. A study published in The International Journal

of Medicine indicates that more than 20,000 deaths right here in North America can be directly attributed to the release of radioactive material from Fukushima. How can we protect ourselves? First, be aware of what items are likely to be highly tainted. 1) SEAFOOD: Fish and crustaceans from the Pacific Ocean should all be considered to be poisoned with radiation.

HEALTH

2) WATER: The rainfall and snowfall are all radiated. Do not drink any water that has not been filtered. 3) DAIRY PRODUCT: Milk and milk products from the West Coast states currently have the highest levels of radiation in North America. 4) PRODUCE: All produce from California or any other West Coast State are also likely to be tainted.

5) MEAT: If an animal eats any leafy vegetable all along the West Coast, that animal has consumed radiation, and is poisoned. Radioactive isotopes of the type released from Fukushima have a half-life of 30,000 years. Therefore, we must permanently change the way we prepare our foods; washing food with soap and rinsing it in filtered water. n

Forget the New Years resolutions...

Staying fit yearround with 10 easy goals By Jessamyn Patterson Are you an 8%-er? Over 65% of Americans make New Years resolutions, while only about 8% will have achieved them come the next New Year. Sadly, over 30% don’t make it past the first week, three days being the length of an average New Years resolutioner’s goal streak. While this covers so many types of resolutions, 38% (on average) applies to those looking to better their health. I am not here to yell at you to keep to your New Years resolution. Let’s focus on goals that you can aim for year around without the title. Here are a 10 tips from a healthy, fit, busy working mom of four who knows that everyone has to start somewhere and that your journey is your own, never compare yourself!

1.  Document your progress!

Say what you want about selfies, but they can be one of the best ways to measure your results. While it’s uncomfortable at first, get in your sports bra and shorts and take a photo. In a month, do it again. With that take your measurements. When you feel like you are at a standstill, you could be losing inches.

2. Be self-affirming.

Thoughts become things, so tell yourself you are fit, beautiful, strong and healthy — even if you don’t feel it now. When you are negative with yourself you bring that energy into your mental, emotional and physical world.

3. Clean up your life.

What happens internally manifests externally so be organized. Find structure and detail in life. Not to go overboard but when you have a stress free home and work life everything will run smoother. A cluttered environment will not provide that.

4. Make a to-do list!

Every morning, create a list and stick to it. No slacker time, no distracted time until your list is finished! Strive for balance.

5. Face the world upright.

Many people struggle with postural issues, especially if they work behind

Over 30 Years experience

a desk, have children or drive often. When you workout and apply weight to your body, it can worsen your condition, so strive to fix your posture and strengthen weak muscles. Plus having proper posture will make you look and feel better about yourself.

6.  Try food naked.

All-natural food that is. Eating food in its most natural state provides your body with optimum vitamins and minerals. Avoid processed foods, which is anything that comes in a bag or box.

7. Start slow.

If you’re used to consuming 3,000 calories a day, don’t drop to 1,200. Lower your caloric intake slowly, a few hundred calories at a time, and focus on minimizing your portions before making drastic changes to your diet. If you are the opposite and are a meal skipper, start now. Track your eating and even if as small as a handful of fresh veggies, add in every three hours.

8. Food prep.

Spend a few hours a week prepping meals. Store them in Tupperware containers, making it easier for everyone to grab-and-go throughout the week. With this having fresh readily available snacks in the fridge will benefit you when you are mindless snacking.

LIPO $750 Per Area or $200 Off Any Procedure GET YOUR PERFECT LOOK, CALL TODAY!

Actual Patients . . . Amazing Results!

9. Create a family schedule.

Strive for consistency. Your body, your children and your success will thrive in a disciplined and consistent environment. Studies prove that those with a set schedule up to five days a week are natural achievers.

10. Focus on reflection.

Think about your journey weekly and be honest about your struggles. Find solutions, create a plan, execute and try again until you master your challenge. My best recommendation is food tracking on paper, not on an app. Everything you put in your body you keep track of. Use the space to write about your energy levels, fitness and any other contributing factors. This way you can compare and contrast how your day/week choices affected your results. n

Homeless former colonel’s story illustrates problems facing U.S. vets By Ross Tucker He spent 30 years in the U.S. military, earned three graduate degrees and eventually worked his way to the Pentagon before retiring — but today, former Air Force Col. Robert Freniere, 59, is living out of his van, filling out job applications on public computers in libraries. Freniere’s story stands in stark contrast to common beliefs about unemployed, homeless veterans being made up of former soldiers from the rank-and-file. But an in-depth profile of Freniere by The Philadelphia Inquirer shows that problems affecting veterans don’t discriminate based on chain of command; they go up to the top brass. How could this have happened? The answer is complex and representative of what veterans face when they attempt to re-enter civilian life. After retiring, it took Freniere a year to get a job with a defense contractor. When that work dried up, it was hard to find a civilian job that complemented his background in intelligence. A divorce, the costs of two kids’ college expenses and struggles with dyslexia left Freniere calling his van his home. According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, some 58,000

vets face life on the street each day, and “over the course of a year, approximately twice that many experience homelessness,” the organization says. “Only 7% of the general population can claim veteran status, but nearly 13% of the homeless adult population are veterans.” Unemployment is an even bigger problem. The rate among veterans who have served since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon stands at 10 percent, or 246,000 out of work. For those under

But Freniere isn’t giving up. “I’m a military guy. I’m mission-oriented,” he told the Inquirer. “I’ve got

No limit to educational possibilities for military with online classes

Range of programs and flexibility make online learning an excellent option for service members By Richard Pera www.Military1.com Recently, my wife handed me an article by Dr. L. Raphael Reif, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In the article, he predicts a trend already experienced by countless military students: online higher education is an affordable, quality option. Dr. Reif admits that students are not the only ones worried about the high cost of a college education; universities, even wealthy, prestigious ones like MIT, are worried, too.

Reshaping the way we learn

Praising opportunities presented by online education, he states: “I am convinced that digital learning is the most important innovation in education since the printing press.” He goes on to say, “When the class of 2025 arrives on campuses,

Women have a powerful option to find happiness in 2014 Women everywhere made New Year’s resolutions to live more fulfilled lives in 2014 and beyond. Once they made those resolutions, they may have turned to self-help books, fad diets and online-advice to try and make them a reality. But who knew that the key to happiness might be where women least expect — out on the open road, and on two wheels. A new study shows that women who ride their own motorcycles are noticeably happier – in life, in relationships, and even in the bedroom – than women who don’t ride. The study, conducted by Kelton and commissioned by Harley-Davidson, interviewed 1,013 adult female riders and 1,016 adult female non-riders, and the findings make it clear that riding a motorcycle greatly improves a woman’s feelings of overall self-worth. Key insights surrounding women who ride motorcycles in comparison to those who don’t include the following: •  More than twice as many always feel happy (37 percent of riders vs. 16 percent of non-riders) •  Nearly four times as many always feel sexy (27 percent of riders vs. 7 percent of non-riders) •  Nearly twice as many always feel

confident (35 percent of riders vs. 18 percent of non-riders) According to the study, more than half (53 percent) of women who ride cite their motorcycle as a key source of happinessand nearly three in four (74 percent) believe their lives have improved since they started riding. “Riding a motorcycle is the ultimate form of freedom and self-expression, so it makes sense that women riders are happier in life and, in general, feel more fulfilled,” said Claudia Garber, Director of Women’s Outreach for Harley-Davidson. “That’s why learning to ride a motorcycle is the perfect gift you can give yourself and the best resolution to make for a truly life-changing new year.”

Riding improves relationships

Beyond positively impacting a woman’s sense of self, the study also shows riding can improve relationships. When it comes to romance, women who ride leave non-riders in their dust, being more content with: •  Communication with their significant other (60 percent of riders vs. 38 percent of non-riders) •  Physical intimacy (51 percent of

riders vs. 35 percent of non-riders). Stress can cause tension between significant others, but since more than a third (34 percent) of women riders report that they now feel less stressed after starting to ride, it’s not surprising that 50 percent of them are extremely satisfied with the state of their current relationships.

Where women can get started

WHALE WATCHING

Story and photos by Doug Aguillard There was a time, not too long ago, when the only time to go whale watching in San Diego waters was the gray whale migration from December through March. Things have changed in the last two to three years where you can expect to see whales of several different species year round. The food

supply in the local seas have changed and now, anytime you go out on a whale watching boat, you have a great chance of seeing a whale. So far this year, the gray whale migration is seeing record numbers of these large baleen whales heading south, down to the warm water lagoons of Baja California to give birth and

mate. They are coming from the Arctic, and in impressive numbers. This is the longest mammal migration known. Also being seen, but not every day are fin whales, the second largest mammal in the world, and the rare Minke Whale. Around May, the largest mammal in the world has recently decided to call the waters off of Southern California home, and that is the blue whale, which can reach lengths of up to 100 feet long. On any given day, the whale watching fleet has seen up to 18 blue whales between Pt. Loma and the Coronado Islands. The acrobatic Humped-backed Whales can occur year round also. When it comes to dolphins, this is where it gets really exciting, especially for the kids, as large pods of common dolphins, will come rushing towards your boat and ride the bow, as if they are surfing, while others will be leaping in the air, as if simply for play. Other Dolphins in our local waters include the bottle-nosed, Rissos, and in the

winter time, the Pacific white-sided. Very rare in spring and early summer, the orca or killer whale can occasionally be seen. This is the perfect family trip, as most whale watching boats go out for three- to four-hour rides year round, and most boats carry drinks and snacks. most powerful military stories of 2013

1. Air Force takes God out of oaths:

The U.S. Air Force appears to be systematically removing the phrase “so help me God” from the oaths of office taken by officer candidates and enlistees. According to Judicial Watch, a legal watchdog organization, the United States Air Force Academy has removed the phrase from some written materials, including the oath administered to new cadets, because of a single atheist’s objections.

Then his own son was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2010 and Kelly found the pain more scorching and paralyzing than he had ever imagined. But it also gave him an unbreakable bond with other family members of the fallen.

Pentagon held fake arrival ceremonies: A unit of the U.S. Department of Defense has been holding so-called “arrival ceremonies” for seven years, with an honor guard carrying flagdraped coffins off of a cargo plane as though they held the remains of missing American service men and women returning that day from old battlefields. After NBC News raised ques-

tions about the arrival ceremonies, the Pentagon acknowledged that no honored dead were in fact arriving, and that the planes used in the ceremonies often couldn’t even fly but were towed into position.

4. Wounded Ranger gives ‘Salute seen around the world’:

Josh Hargis, a Ranger with the 3rd Ranger Battalion, was wounded in an attack that left four other members of his team dead. The 3rd was conducting a mission to try to capture a HVT (High Value Target) in the Panjwai district of Afghanistan. The 36 members and a canine unit were attempting to capture a high value target in Panjwai in southern Afghanistan. When the troops arrived at the home, U.S. military officials said, the unit did a typical “call out” asking for those inside to come out. One man appeared. Reports from the battlefield suggest he dropped to his knees and lifted his shirt to show the U.S. forces that he was not wearing a suicide bomb vest. As several members of the Ranger unit moved toward the man to begin questioning him, a woman wearing a suicide vest emerged from the house and blew herself up, killing several members of the unit instantly, along HOUSING

5. Army policy will set new rules for tattoos:

Since New York City’s first tattoo parlor opened its doors to ink up Civil War soldiers in the mid 1800s, the military has seen a great deal of marked service men and women. But moving forward, that population might slowly start to decline. According to Stars and Stripes, the Army is well on its way to stricter regulations when it comes to covering in ink. Secretary of the Army John McHugh has given approval for a change to appearance regulations that will forbid tattoos on the forearm, above the neckline, or below the knee.

6. Captain James Kirk to command Zumwalt:

The skipper of the newest, most futuristic ship the U.S. Navy has ever built is none other than Capt. James Kirk. Let that settle in for a second. Almost a full 50 years from the birth of the fictional Capt. James T. Kirk in 1966, the real Capt. James A. Kirk (no relation) is taking the helm of the USS Zumwalt.

National Guard soldiers from New York who befriended a stray dog while on patrol in Afghanistan were reunited with the 65-pound mixed breed and her seven rambunctious puppies after the animals arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The reunion was made possible by the efforts of a Long Island pet rescue organization whose motto is: “Paws of War — No Buddy Left Behind.”

Army Ranger Joe Kapacziewski

7. Meet the first man in Army Ranger history who returned to combat an amputee:

Army Ranger Joe Kapacziewski had volunteered to “take care” of the Taliban snipers who had ambushed his platoon in the pitch darkness on a Hindu Kush mountain ridge in Afghanistan in 2009. But as he raced down the mountainside, aiming to cut the enemy off at the pass below, he was caught in an avalanche of loose shale and tumbled down. To stop his fall and save himself, he grabbed a tree — and came face-to-face with one of the Taliban snipers who had been hiding behind it. With his free hand, the staff sergeant aimed his M4 rifle and shot the sniper dead. “Kap,” as he was fondly nicknamed, then dashed back up the steep slope to his men under fire. It was a Herculean feat even the fittest soldier would have been hard-pressed to pull off. For Kapacziewski, it was something miraculous. The 30-year-old Dunham, Conn., native is the only amputee in Army Rangers history ever to return to combat. He has served in five tours while wearing a prosthesis that replaced his right leg below the knee. In his gripping new memoir, “Back in the Fight” (St. Martin’s Press), he describes hunting Taliban targets, leading a squad and even saving a wounded soldier — all without a leg. San Diego loses one of its true heroes...

Jerry Coleman Yankee Infielder, Fighter Pilot and Voice of the Padres

By Jeff Kallman Like Herb Score who preceded him to the Elysian Fields a little over five years ago, Jerry Coleman in the broadcast booth probably thanked God that Yogi Berra never sought a post-playing career as a baseball announcer. Upon Score’s death in 2008, Coleman stood supreme as the master malapropper of the microphones from his loft as the San Diego Padres’ broadcaster, even if the former second baseman scaled his working time back until this past season. “Ozzie Smith just made another play that I’ve never seen anyone else make before, and I’ve seen him make it more often than anyone else ever has! Coleman once hollered on the air, with a flair even Score at his best found elusive. But then Coleman never quite had Score’s flair for geographic displacement, even if he might have been funnier with his own: The Padres need one to tie and two to win, so going into the ninth the score is San Francisco one, the Yankees nothing.” Now Coleman is gone, having died following a short illness, and bearing as well the distinction of having been

the only major league baseball player to see live combat in two wars. (Ted Williams learned to fly in World War II, but didn’t see combat as he would in Korea.) He flew dive bombers in World War II; he flew in the Korean War, after discovering World War II-veteran Marine pilots hadn’t been fully discharged but merely designated inactive. He didn’t mind one bit. As he said when the Padres unveiled a statue of him outside Petco Park, “Your country is bigger than baseball.” (He left the Marines a lieutenant colonel with two Distinguished Flying Crosses and thirteen Air Medals among other decorations.) He probably felt right at home in San Diego, where Camp Pendleton is situated and where the region’s prominent military presence embraces such men as Coleman who tended to speak far more of the men he fought with than of himself when speaking of his wartime service. But it was how Coleman spoke of live baseball from the Padres’ broadcast booth that endeared him to Padres and other fans and, finally, enshrined him in the Hall of Fame in 2005 as a Frick Award winner. against the wall and it’s rolling toward second base!), you were one of this Jerry’s kids. Coleman was a better than useful Yankee second baseman in his playing days, who won the World Series MVP in 1950 and even managed to secure 9 at-bats in three games against Score, during his next-to-last playing season and Score’s sophomore season, 1956. He went 3-for-9 against the Cleveland howitzer with 2 runs batted in, 2 strikeouts (both looking), a .333 batting average and on-base percentage, and a .556 slugging percentage. As a player he’s probably remembered best for what he did on the final day of the 1949 season, with the Yankees and the Red Sox entering the day in a dead heat for the American League pennant: in the fabled seasonender at Yankee Stadium, Coleman bagged what proved the game-winner when he broke a one-all tie and drove what proved the insurances runs in the bargain in the bottom of the eighth. The hit was set up in the top of the inning when Joe McCarthy — in a move that lived in Red Sox infamy for decades — inexplicably lifted his starting pitcher Ellis Kinder for a pinch hitter despite Kinder seeming to get stronger as the game got deeper. He’d surrendered only one earned run all day and the Red Sox bullpen that season wasn’t considered particularly strong. Tommy Henrich opened the Yankee eighth with a home run off Mel

A married man was having an affair with his secretary. One day, their passions overcame them and they took off for her house, where they made passionate love all afternoon. Exhausted from the wild sex, they fell asleep, awakening around 8:00 pm. As the man threw on his clothes, he told the woman to take his shoes outside and rub them through the grass and dirt. Mystified, she nonetheless complied. He slipped into his shoes and drove home. “Where have you been?” demanded his wife when he entered the house. “Darling, I can’t lie to you. I’ve been having an affair with my secretary and we’ve been having sex all afternoon. I fell asleep and didn’t wake up until eight o’clock.” The wife glanced down at his shoes and said, “You’re lying! You’ve been playing golf!”

A. Because women can’t shut up long enough to build up the required pressure.

 Q. What do you call a woman who has lost 95% of her intelligence?
A. Divorced. Q: How many men does it take to open a beer?
A: None. It should be opened by the time she brings it. Q: How can you tell if your wife is dead?
A: The sex is the same but the dishes pile up.

A woman hired a contractor to repaint the interior of her house. The woman walked the man through the second floor of her home and told him what colors she wanted for each room. As they walked through the first room, the woman said, “I think I would like this room in a cream color.” The contractor wrote on his clipMen are simple board, walked to the window, opened How to satisfy a woman: caress, it and yelled out, “Green side up!” He praise, pamper, relish, savor, massage, then closed the window and continued make plans, fix, empathize, serenade, following the woman to the next room. compliment, support, feed, tantalize, The woman looked confused, but probathe, humor, placate, stimulate, conceeded with her tour. “In this room, sole, purr, hug, coddle, excite, pacify, I was thinking of an off blue.” Again, the contractor wrote this down, went to the window, opened it and yelled out, “Green side up!” This baffled the woman, but she was hesitant to say anything. In the next room, the woman said she would like it painted in a light rose color. And once more, the contractor opened the window and yelled, “Green side up!” Struck with curiosity, the woman mustered up the nerve to ask, “Why do you keep yelling ‘Green side up’ out my window every time I tell you the color I would like the room?” For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280 • advertising@militarypress.com

This 65 year old woman is naked, jumping up and down on her bed laughing and singing. Her husband walks into the bedroom and sees her. He watches her awhile then says, “You look ridiculous, what on earth are you doing?” She says, “I just got my check-up and my doctor says I have the breasts of an eighteen-year-old.” She starts laughing and jumping again. He says, “Yeah, right. And what did he say about your 65 year-old ass?” She says, “Well, your name never came up.”

How to get out of a ticket

Woman: “Is there a problem officer?” Officer: “Ma’am you were speeding.” Woman: “Oh, I see.” Officer: “Can I see your license please?” Woman: “I’d give it to you, but I don’t have one.” Officer: “Don’t have one?” Woman: “Lost it 4 times for drinking.” Officer: “I see, can I have your vehicle registration papers please?” Woman: “I can’t do that.” Officer: “why not?” Woman: “I Stole this car and hacked up the owner.” Officer: “You what?” Woman: “His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.” The officer looks at the woman, slowly backs away from his car,and calls for back-up. within 5 minutes five police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half-drawn gun. Senior Officer: “Ma’am could you step out of your vehicle please!” woman: “Is there a problem officer?” Senior Officer: “one of my men told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner. Woman: “Murdered the owner!” Senior Officer: “yes, could you please open the trunk of your car please. The woman opens the trunk revealing nothing but an empty trunk. Senior Officer: “Is this your car ma’am”?

Woman: “Yes, here are my registration papers. The first officer is stunned. Senior Officer: “One of my men claims that you do not have a driver’s license. The woman digs into her bookbag and draws out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer. The officer looks quite puzzled as he glances at the license. Senior Officer: “I’m sorry ma’am. One of my men claims that you didn’t have a license, stole this car and murdered the owner.” Woman: “Betcha the lyin’ fool told you I was speeding too!”

Not so foolproof formula

The Pentagon recently found it had too many generals and offered an early retirement bonus. They promised any general who retired straight away his full annual benefits plus $10,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any two parts of the general’s body, with the general getting to select any pair of points he wished. The first man, an Air Force general, accepted. He asked the pension man to measure from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. Six feet. He walked out with a check of $720,000. The second man, an Army general, asked them to measure from the tip of his outstretched hands to his toes. Eight feet. He walked out with a check for $960,000. When the third general, a grizzled old Marine, was asked where to measure, he told the pension man ... “From the tip of my penis to the bottom of my testicles.” The pension man suggested that perhaps the Marine general might like to reconsider, pointing out the nice checks the previous two generals had received. The Marine insisted and the pension expert said that would be fine, but that he’d better get the medical officer to do the measuring. The medical officer attended and asked the general to drop the pants. He did. The medical officer placed the tape on the tip of the general’s penis and began to work back. “My God!” he said. “Where are your testicles?” The general replied, “In Vietnam.”

Additionally, academic resources abound. Online libraries contain ample eBooks and reference material, and online tutorials are available for students with remedial needs, especially in English and math. No doubt, whether classes are presented online or in a physical classroom, completing a degree is a challenge for active duty service members and veterans who are balancing work, family, and school commitments. Fortunately, online education programs are increasingly providing options that help avoid many common constraints of on-ground programs. I’ll share just one real-life exam-

He currently works in Washington, D.C., but was stationed in Afghanistan during part of his 100 percent online degree program at American Military University.
