RUSH IS RIGHT

Are you a ‘brat?’

The media and Democrats ignore Americans’ mood at their own peril

Tracking down a military term

By Katie Lange DoD News, Defense Media Activity

PUBLISHER’S POINT

We’ve all heard the term “military brat before. It pertains to those children who grew up in military families. “Brats wear the name like a badge of honor, often because of the moves, stressors and cultural experiences that make them more resilient than their civilian counterparts. But outside of the military, the word brat is often considered derogatory. So it made me wonder – where did the term “military brat originate? To find out, I reached out to the folks at National Defense University Libraries, who did some research for me. It turns out the origin of the term is still pretty unclear, but there are a lot of interesting theories behind it, and most of them originate in Britain. Since we couldn’t find anything definitive, I figured I’d tell you about some of those theories.

by Richard T. Matz

I

was listening to Rush Limbaugh the other day and my thoughts were, “He’s out there... pretty far out there. But I have to admit a lot of times I’m out there with him! He pointed out that 95 percent of the media is against President Trump and the radical left wing elements of the Democratic Party are relentless in their pursuit to stop Trump in any way they can.

It’s a shame that the divide in this country is so malignant that the left wing Democrats don’t care about our country or our people. They seem to only care about creating havoc whenever they feel the opportunity presents itself. I don’t understand how they can completely ignore the Constitution and feel they have a right to interpret it as it suits them. The chaos created on the campuses of our colleges has trampled on our rights of free speech. I do not believe that all students are part of this giant conspiracy to thwart conservative Republican speakers on their campuses. I find it beyond belief when I watch masked rioters at Berkeley destroying property, smashing windows and setting fires to cars, carts and campuses without retribution. The instance at Berkeley made me angry as hell to watch the police watch and do nothing to stop the carnage at hand. What’s happened to our police forces that they can stand idly by while a group of masked thugs break the law and get a free pass while breaking those laws? Just think what goes on in the minds of our children in grade school, middle school and high school as they watch on television all these atrocities! If this is permitted now, what do you think will happen when these children advance to higher education. Colleges and college professors should be giving our children the education they need to succeed

‘British Regiment Attached Traveler?’ I first found this theory published in a 2011 blog by retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael M. Dunn, who was the president of the Air Force Association at the time. Dunn, who had also been the president of NDU, had asked a researcher to find the origin of the term. One came through, discovering a book published in 1921 that attributed the saying to the British army. It explained “BRAT as a status standing for British Regiment Attached Traveler, and it was assigned to families who were able to travel abroad with a soldier. Eventually, it just referred to military children. But the term stuck, and was adopted in many places around the world.

AND THE PICK FOR THE BOLTS IS...

Robinson’s faith broke barriers

OJ Howard could be surprise draft pick

By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

CHARGERS REPORT

S

by Art Garcia Jr.

A

s we go to print one day before the NFL Draft, the majority of draft analysts still believe Malik Hooker, the play-making safety from Ohio State, will be the Chargers pick at No. 7 in the first round. However, there are a few updated mock drafts that have both Hooker and LSU safety Jamal Adams off the board by the time the Chargers are on the clock. Some analysts think General Manager Tom Telesco should go after a receiver — Clemson’s Mike Williams and Western Michigan’s Corey Davis are the names mentioned. If the safeties are gone and there is no offensive lineman worth selecting early in the first round, Telesco will address other needs with the pick or trade down. But which direction should he go if the player he covets is gone and there is no safety, receiver, edge rusher or defensive tackle on his big board worth the seventh pick? And what happens if no team wants to trade up to the seventh spot? There is one player ranked the best at his position whose name no analyst has the Chargers even looking at in the first round. A player who was under utilized in college and, according to analysts, has the kind of talent to be a dominant player as a pro — a player who could improve the Chargers offense on day one.

Alabama tight end O.J. Howard is ranked best in his position and could improve the Chargers offense.

O.J. Howard, 6-6, 248 TE, Alabama Ranked No. 18 on Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) Top 250 Prospects List and No. 12 on Ourlads’ Top 50 List, respectively, Howard is regarded the best tight end in this draft. He capped off his senior year by setting career-highs in receptions (45) and touchdowns (3) — finishing his collegiate career with 114 receptions, 1,726 yards and seven touchdowns.

Billy Moy (PFF): “O.J. Howard owns a unique blend of size and athleticism that is simply coveted in today’s NFL at the tight end position. Howard was PFF’s topgraded college tight end this past season, and it’s tough to find any major red flags in his game. He’s an athletic mismatch, capable of taking advantage of smaller defensive backs while having the speed and quickness to consistently separate from BOLTS, continued on Page 9

eventy years ago, on April 15, Jackie Robinson broke the color line in Major League Baseball. In the latest book about Jackie Robinson, “42 Faith, Ed Henry recounts the struggles of someone who just wanted to play baseball. But it also shows how faith helped Robinson overcome many hardships. Many might know the name, since Ed Henry has a hybrid role at Fox News as the chief national correspondent and a freelance anchor on various Fox programs. Within his busy schedule he decided to write this book because this is “the rest of the Jackie Robinson story. “It came about 10 years ago at a dinner party at the Belgium ambassador’s house, Henry said. “After having a bad time, I sat there thinking about the three-strike rule in baseball where you are out. I was about to leave to watch the World Series when the woman beside me shared the story of her late father-in-law. She starts telling this tale how, in 1945, a man shows up at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights, who needed to see a minister right away. “Reverend L. Wendell Fifield received the man, who paced, prayed and silently stewed for about 45 minutes before telling Fifield, ‘I’ve decided to sign Jackie Robinson to his first baseball contract. It’s the hardest decision of my life. I need to be in your presence, in God’s presence, to know it’s the right thing to do.’ Fifield kept his conversation with the man confidential, but he eventually told his wife. And long after her husband’s death, June Fifield wrote in her Church Bulletin a 5-page essay about her husband’s encounter with Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey. Being a reporter, I researched this fascinating story and decided to write the book. Both Rickey and Robinson were to face many adversities with their craftiness and cunning, guts and grits, brains and brawn, as well as an overwhelming belief in God. It was almost that there was divine intervention on why the color barrier was broken. Carl Erskine, a teammate of Robinson, told Henry, “Athletic ability and determination could take Robinson ROBINSON, continued on Page 8

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE ‘MOTHER OF ALL BOMBS’ By Shannon Collins DoD News, Defense Media Activity

fins then opened to stabilize it and guide it to its target.

The “Mother of All Bombs, the GBU43/B Massive Air Blast, is the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in America’s arsenal, and it was used for the first time in combat on April 13 in Afghanistan against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. If you’ve never heard of this bomb, you’re likely not alone. To help you get educated about it, here are some facts to know:

It’s got competition

Why was it created?

According to globalsecurity.org, it’s the largest-ever satellite-guided, air-delivered weapon in history, made to replace the unguided 15,000-pound BLU-82 Daisy Cutter that was used in Vietnam and early on in Afghanistan. The MOAB was developed in only nine weeks in 2003 to be available for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said it was created to put pressure on Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to stop fighting against the coalition. The smart bomb was never used during that war.

The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb sits in theater of the Global War on Terror awaiting to be used should it become necessary. The MOAB is also called “The Mother of all Bombs.

The MOAB’s specs:

It has a relatively thin aluminum casing designed to burst on a surface, not penetrate it. That creates a large blast with lesser fragmentation. It’s a “smart bomb with GPS-guided munition. It’s got stabilizing fins and inertial gyro for pitch and roll control. It weighs 21,000 pounds! The MOAB delivers an 18,700-pound warhead known as the BLU-120/B, which is made of H6 — a mixture of cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, TNT and

aluminum. It’s BIG — 30 feet long with a diameter of 40.5 inches, to be exact.

How does it reach its target?

The MOAB was loaded into a C-130 Hercules, where it sat in a cradle on an airdrop platform until the whole platform was pulled off the plane at a high altitude by a drogue parachute, which is used to slow it down. Once in the air, the weapon was quickly released from the platform to keep up its forward momentum. The grid

According to globalsecurity.org, on Sept. 11, 2007, the Russian military announced it had tested the “Father of all Bombs, the world’s most powerful non-nuclear airdelivered munition. The Russians said it’s four times more powerful than the MOAB, even though it technically has fewer explosives in it (7.8 tons compared to the MOAB’s 8 tons). The FOAB is said to use more efficient explosives, yielding the equivalent of 44 tons of TNT with a blast radius of 300 meters — double that of the MOAB.

Why is the MOAB green?

According to Robert Hammack, the Air Force Research Lab chief behind the bomb’s creation, it’s pretty simple — they were in a hurry. “Since we were in such a rush to get the weapon into our inventory to send over to aid the war effort, resources were limited, he said. “The weekend the MOAB arrived, the only color available in the amount we needed was John Deere green.

linebackers; he has sure hands, as he’s recorded just six total drops over the last three seasons. Howard has also graded positively as a run blocker in each of the last three seasons, including 2016 when he earned the highest run-blocking grade among tight ends. Ourlads’: “A tools-rich, hard working athlete who grew up in a pro style offense and saw plenty of action blocking and tackling over the past four years. He has the physical ability to energize the tight end position on any team. Howard is a match-up nightmare for defenses because of his size, speed, and athletic ability. Woefully underused at Alabama until the national championship game where he showcased his immense talent. Forget the fact Telesco drafted Hunter Henry at the top of the second round last year. If Telesco is able to pick the best tight end in the draft for the second straight year, the gameday schemes offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt could design around Henry, Howard and future Hallof-Famer Antonio Gates would be a nightmare for opposing defenses. Also, think about the New England Patriots and how dominant they were when the offense featured the two tight end attack of Rob Gronkowski and the late Aaron Hernandez.

During the years 2010-2012, the tandem of “Gronk and Hernandez combined for 3,634 receptions, 4,619 yards and 56 touchdowns. The size of the 6-foot-6-inch, 265-pound Gronkowski and the 6-foot-1inch, 245-pound Hernandez presented matchup problems for every defense the Patriots faced. Before dismissing the idea of drafting Howard, Chargers fans should remember the success Rivers had while throwing to receivers Vincent Jackson (6-feet5-inches, 230-pounds) and Malcolm Floyd (6-feet-5-inches, 225-pounds). Imagine defenses scrambling to match-up against the likes of Henry (6-feet-5-inches, 250-pounds), Gates (6-feet-4-inches, 255-pounds), Howard (6-feet-6-inches, 248-pounds) and Allen (6-feet-2-inches, 211-pounds) all running routes at the same time — advantage Chargers. Per Greg Gabriel (Pro Football Weekly), Howard’s versatility allowed him to “play in tight (next to the OT), as a Y, split out, in the slot and as a wing in college and should be able to do the same as a pro. The Chargers offense finished the 2016 season ranked 14th overall — rushing (26th), passing (8th) and scoring (9th). Bringing in another highcaliber offensive weapon for Rivers to connect with can only improve those numbers exponentially. The Endzone: Every year players slide down the draft board because of reported

injury concerns, questionable character issues or a team trades up and changes the draft board. Alabama has two such players the Chargers could take as well — DT Jonathan Allen and ILB Reuben Foster. The odds of Allen falling to the seventh pick is slim, but if he does, the Chargers should take him. The Chargers defense finished last season ranked 29th in scoring by allowing the fourth most points in the NFL. Pairing Allen next to Brandon Mebane on the interior with Joey Bosa and Corey Liuget on the outside in new coordinator Gus Bradley’s 4-3 scheme, the defensive front seven would be one of the best in the league. A first-team ALL-SEC selection three years in a row, Allen is ranked No. 2 on Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) Top 250 Prospects and Ourlads’ top 50 Prospects, in his latest mock draft, Rob Rang (CBS Sports.com) believes Allen will fall to the Chargers. “The Chargers won big a year ago with Joey Bosa and could be in a similar position this year should Allen fall into their lap, Rang said. “The 6-foot-3-inch, 286-pound Allen has the intangibles the Chargers have long prized and could remind new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley of former Seahawks pupil Michael Bennett with his positional versatility, initial burst and coordinated, powerful hand play. As for Foster, questions about his char-

acter have him sliding down the draft board because of a couple incidents during the last three months. After losing linebacker Manti Te’o to the New Orleans Saints in free agency and designating Melvin Ingram with the non-exclusive franchise tag, Telesco could always select Foster to bolster his linebacker corps in the event he cannot agree to a long-term contract with Ingram. Ranked No. 5 on PFF’s Top 250 Prospect List and No. 15 on Ourlad’s top 50 List, Foster is considered a three-down ‘backer capable of playing inside or outside depending on the scheme. Rang believes the questions around Foster drops him to the Washington Redskins at No. 15. “Foster is a top-10 talent but might suffer a slide on draft day after questions about his decision-making off the field and durability on it surfaced since the season ended, Rang said. “Possessing remarkable closing speed and the physicality to intimidate, he could prove a steal at this point in the draft. Whichever direction Telesco decides to go in the draft, one thing is for sure — this class must have the same kind of highimpact on the team as the players selected in last year’s draft. With so much negative response the ownership continues to receive for moving the franchise from San Diego to Los Angeles, the team needs to win immediately in order to start building a much-needed fan base.

the middle of all this chaos. I wanted to show who they are and how they connected with the soldiers who are completely different from themselves. They are all human beings, so it was important to have those moments where that connection is there — not just Iraqis or Americans — but human beings. That was a mission in itself. icans really want. Rush and a few others get it. If the Democrats continue to stop the president by not passing laws to lower our medical costs, create jobs, reduce taxes, secure our borders and rebuild our infrastructure, they lose any sense of credibility. Like Rush, I do not have any faith in the polls that say President Trump has such a low approval rating. In his first 100 days he has signed 12 executive orders and 12 memorandums — more than any other president in the history of our country. So when I see Rush Limbaugh smoking a cigar or smoking hot on the radio, I’d like to light up with him and give President Trump the opportunity to make America great again!

in life — not their political ideologies that all have a tendency to lean to the left. It’s funny that the radical Democrats accuse President Trump of having ties with Vladimir Putin of Russia. As far as I’m concerned, these left leaners have more in common with Putin, communism and Russia than Trump has ever had! If history is not forgotten, the “radical left has the desire for fundamental change to the capitalist system, and the extreme left is more hostile to liberal democracy and denounce any compromise with capitalism. Does this ring any bells as to who’s closer to communistic ideals? The left has no idea that they’re giving Trump and the Republicans a clear path to the next election in four years. para-sailing, watercraft buzzing by and locals selling everything from sombreros and jewelry to horseback rides. My mode for the entire week is languid and lazy. That circles me back to the word “fudgeler. How do I write about unhurried mornings at the pool reading, followed by lazy afternoons settled in by the sea and watching the procession of people and boats as they sail or motor by? I’m floating in time on my own landlocked cruise to nowhere: food, drinks, entertainment, beach and a great “cabin in an all-inclusive setting. No one will believe I’m actually working! Culinary: Three new outlets have been added: Bombay, an Indian restaurant, Lounge 24, a self-service snack, drink and coffee bar, and Capuchino, a patisserie featuring coffee and ice cream treats. I’m kept well fed at six other restaurants featuring Mexican, Japanese, Italian, fusion cuisine, steaks, plus expansive buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I try them all and don’t go hungry. Does that count as work? RIU Style: RIU’s 692 room types range from standard to suites (there are eight with Jacuzzis on their balcony). They also added 44 junior suites with their own splash pools. There is free WiFi throughout the resort, mini-bar, alcohol dispensers and flat screen TVs in the comfortable rooms.
