Last minute? You can still save on taxes With the federal income tax filing deadline looming, there’s still time for many people to make contributions to tax-favored accounts that may help reduce their tax bill. Contributions for the 2015 tax year can be made to individual retirement accounts up until this year’s filing deadline – April 18 in most states. The traditional April 15 deadline has been extended due to local holidays. For 2015, those younger than 50 can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional Individual Retirement Account, and as much as $6,500 for those 50 or older. There’s no cap on the amount of money you can earn to be eligible to make contributions. Whether the contribution is tax-deductible, however, depends on various factors, like whether you have a retirement plan through your employer and your income. A single person with no workplace retirement plan can take the full deduction. But those who are single with an employer plan may take the full deduction only if they make $61,000 a year or less. Those earning $61,000 to $71,000 can take a partial deduction. No deduction is available for those making more than $71,000. You can also make a 2015 contribution to a Roth IRA, if you qualify, up until the tax-filing deadline. But contributions to a Roth are not tax-deductible. For those who are self-employed, the Simplified Employee Pension IRA can offer a significant tax deduction with an even more expansive deadline, said Stephen W. DeFilippis, a tax preparer in Wheaton, Illinois. If someone wants to put money into a SEP retirement account for 2015, but needs additional time to fund it, the money can be contributed as late as the extended tax deadline of Oct. 17, DeFilippis said. “That’s a real nice ace in the hole, he said. Even if a taxpayer files for an extension, however, any tax owed must be paid by the filing deadline. The amount of the contribution is based on your income. Here are some questions and answers about last-minute contributions: Q: What is the deadline for making a 2015 contribution to a health savings account?

There is a news report about a demonstration and the narrator says: “We live in troubled times. The institutions we once trusted no longer seem reliable. As I begin the laborious process of doing my income taxes, I am again reminded — thanks to withholding and other payments I must make to the government — that I am paying for so many things that aren’t working. The D.C. that follows Washington could easily stand for “dysfunctional city. What other institution or business could long survive with such a record of failure? Would a car dealer who consistently sells lemons be in business for long? Would a fast-food chain continue to attract customers if the hamburger meat was tainted and they became ill? Only the federal government endures with no requirement that it function effectively and efficiently. As Ronald Reagan quipped, “A government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth. He also observed: “No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Six weeks before the 1994 election, Republican Rep. Newt Gingrich of Georgia

published a “Contract with America. Among other things, it promised voters that if they gave Republicans a House majority for the first time in 40 years, Republicans would “select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse. Asked about it, Mr. Gingrich responded in an email: “We promised to audit the House. We brought in PricewaterhouseCoopers. After a year they reported that they couldn’t audit the House [because] there were no coherent records. We then hired them to build a system that could be audited and since then there has been a transparent audit every year. WASTE, continued on Page 12

IT’S BACK TO THE FUTURE TIME FOR BOLTS CHARGERS REPORT

s the 2016 NFL Draft quickly approaches — four weeks and counting as we go to print — the Chargers still have a number of positions to fill and/or backfill in order to compete for a division crown. Injuries to starters and lack of depth at key positions contributed to going winless in the AFC West last season. Although he hasn’t been a big participant in free agency thus far, the players General Manager Tom Telesco did retain and sign off the open market allows him more freedom to select the proverbial “best player available, rather than drafting for a positon of need. Currently picking No. 3 overall, Telesco has said he is open to trade down if the price is right. And with the Browns signing quarterback Robert Griffin III last week, there should be a few teams calling Telesco hoping to trade up if the Browns bypass a quarterback with the second pick. Speculation has Telesco keeping the pick if Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil happens to fall to No. 3 or a trade of-

t’s a scenic flight from San Diego to Reno, with ocean views to the western horizon on the port side. Once north of Los Angeles, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and the southern tip of the Sierras glide by 30,000 feet below. My stay at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, immediately east of Reno, was dedicated to wandering around the area, in order to add a chapter to my “Insiders Guide to Reno travel app. Check-in went smoothly, and the newly renovated room provided a super view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. My first stop was lunch at the Nugget’s classic diner, Rosie’s Cafe. An unexpected delight was the indoor/atrium swimming pool (I’m a lap swimmer), in a tropical-like setting, with panoramic wall-to-ceiling windows facing the mountains. Dinner at John’s Oyster Bar featured a superior, everything-out-of-its-shell “Lazyman’s Cioppino (at $16.95, it’s a bargain). The poker room is well run with lots of regulars playing (always a good sign). There are two daily hold ’em tournaments.

The morning game has an interesting “shoot out structure: no re-buys and a timer goes off after one hour of play. Then one more hand is dealt and, after that, the players with the biggest chip stacks win a share of the prize pool. As you might imagine, the last deal has a lot of betting strategy involved (think the game show Jeopardy). The evening game has standard rules: rebuys are O.K., blinds go up every 15 minutes, cash bounties for etc. I had by Howard Hian knock-outs, a good run one night and, although short stacked, a pair of Jacks all-in helped me to cash out No. 1. Each morning I started at Rosie’s carry-out counter, ordering a freshly baked pastry and coffee. Lunchtime found me at either the Noodle Hut and Sushi Bar (don’t miss the duck) or the buffet with its vast array of food choices. After my tournament win, I celebrated at Gilley’s with a slab of ribs, beer, great music and, yes, a line dancing lesson. It’s raucous fun. One afternoon, I walked over to Victorian Square, a redevelopment area contiguous to the Nugget. There are bars,

Nation marks Vietnam War anniversary By Katie Lange DoD News, Defense Media Activity

War correspondent Michael Ware with U.S. troops in Iraq in his documentary “Only the Dead See the End of War.

The Iraq War documentary every veteran must see By Adam Linehan Task & Purpose

This is a strangely appropriate year to release a documentary about the war in Iraq. Nearly half a decade after the last American combat troops officially withdrew from the country, Iraq and the surrounding region remains marred in the political infighting and sectarian violence that erupted soon after Saddam fell. Meanwhile, recent attacks by affiliates of the Iraqi-born Islamic State have rocked the Western world, raising the prospect of more to come. And of course, despite official claims that America’s combat mission in the Middle East is over, U.S. boots are back on the ground. The Iraq War is far from being won. All of this is to say that the 78 minutes of uncensored combat footage compiled in Michael Ware’s documentary, “Only the Dead See the End Of War, which airs on HBO, is still very relevant today. Filmed over the course of Ware’s tenure as a Time and CNN war correspondent in Iraq, “Only the Dead is a brutally honest,

6 "QSJM

and necessary, summary of a conflict most Americans are still struggling to make sense of, even as we are being drawn back in for round two. Ware arrived in northern Iraq on the eve of the invasion in 2003. He stuck around for the next seven years, during which time he embedded with Western forces across the country, and occasionally filmed behind enemy lines. The documentary begins under mortar fire in Kurdistan, and the combat only picks up steam as Ware makes his way through post-Saddam Baghdad, the Second Battle of Fallujah and then Ramadi, where U.S. Marines are locked in a running gun battle with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s suicidal army. If you fought in Iraq, this is a rare opportunity to give the civilians in your life an unfiltered glimpse at what that experience was really like. “I can understand that for any veteran this is not an easy film to watch, Ware said in an interview on March 22, the day ISIS bombs killed 31 people and wounded more

than 300 in Brussels. “It’s going to bring back more than any other film has done. I spoke with Ware about the legacy of the Iraq War, terrorism in Europe, and how nearly a decade of combat shaped his view. Are you surprised by what happened today in Brussels? No, of course I’m not surprised by what happened today in Brussels. What happened today in Brussels is part of the new normal. Isn’t this what we’ve been living with now? Isn’t this what Europe has been living with? To those of us who actually remembered that a few days ago was the 13th year anniversary of the Iraq invasion, in some kind of perverse way none of this is a surprise. Do you see a link between that attack and the invasion of Iraq? Yes, I draw a direct line between then and now. When we in the West invaded Iraq, we inadvertently unleashed the Islamic State upon ourselves and the world. It was the ultimate unintended consequence. No one could’ve foreseen it. The Islamic State was born in our invasion. That’s a fact of history that no one can change, regardless of their political persuasion. And it’s a generational reality that we’re all still learning how to do deal with. As someone who was in Iraq for almost the entirety of the war, where do you think we went wrong? The invasion was 21 days of stunningly successful maneuver warfare. Militarily, it was brilliant. In three weeks, we brought down an entire regime. But the next day after the invasion, the Iraq War began. And that’s the thing we’re still living with. There were endless mistakes in that. From the disbandment to the Iraqi military to the de-Ba’athification and beyond. The insurgency never had to happen. I remember, in the summer of 2003, before the insurgency began, when it was just a

Surviving Vietnam War veterans have gone through a lot in their lifetimes. Fighting in thick jungles and dense heat, they had to deal with hidden enemies, diseases and other health hazards while being away from their families for long stretches. When they returned — many with posttraumatic stress disorder and other health issues — it was to a nation that didn’t welcome them with open arms. For their suffering, it’s only right that we honor and remember their sacrifices now while we still can. March 29 is Vietnam Veterans Day, named as such because it marks the date in 1973 when the last U.S. combat troops were withdrawn from South Vietnam. This year, Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald and Defense Secretary Ash Carter held a wreath-laying ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., to recognize, honor and thank the nearly 9 million service members from that era. Other satellite events were held across the country. To understand a little more about what those vets went through, here’s a summary of some of the major military events of Vietnam.

The early days of war

In November 1955, shortly after Vietnam was divided into the communist north and the anti-communist south, the U.S. began sending military advisers to help South Vietnamese troops repel invasions by the north, as well as the spread of communism. During the next decade, the number of advisers swelled into the thousands before the first U.S. ground troops were sent in to fight in March 1965.

Major offensives

The ground war began after what’s known as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in August 1964, when the USS Maddox exchanged fire with three North Vietnamese torpedo boats while on routine patrol in the gulf. This began the Navy’s air and surface bombardment of North Vietnam, and within days, Marines and Army personnel were sent in to fight, too. A major air campaign known as Operation Rolling Thunder launched at the same time, with U.S. airmen targeting North Vietnamese transportation lines, defense systems and supply lines to get the north to stop helping communist guerrillas in the south, known as the Viet Cong. That goal was never achieved, though, and Rolling Thunder

News Briefs House votes to allow female pilots’ ashes at Arlington The House has passed legislation to allow female World War II pilots known as WASPs to continue placing their ashes at Arlington National Cemetery. Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 385-0 to approve the bill sponsored by an Arizona Republican, congresswoman Martha McSally, herself a retired Air Force fighter pilot. The WASPs served in a special unit called Women Airforce Service Pilots. They flew noncombat missions to free up male pilots for combat. During the war, the women were considered civilians. But since 1977, federal law has granted them status as veterans. They had been eligible since 2002 to have their ashes placed at Arlington with military honors. But the Army ruled last year that the WASPs never should have been allowed in and revoked their eligibility.

Pearl Harbor-based cruiser moving to San Diego The guided-missile cruiser, USS Chosin, which has been homeported at Pearl Harbor since it was commissioned in 1991, will leave the islands for San Diego — its new homeport following and modernization and upgrade, which the Navy says will extend its life by decades. The Chosin will begin the cruiser modernization program in San Diego. The ship will be considered on deployment until July 1, at which time it will officially change its homeport to San Diego. The move supports the Navy’s plan to modernize select cruisers to extend their service lives to 40 years, as well as upgrade shipboard combat systems to address current and future warfighting requirements.

ENSIGN LIVES GRANDMOTHER’S DREAM By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Marcus L. Stanley

PHILIPPINE SEA — In May 2015, 95-year-old Jean Marie Dorn Lowman wanted nothing more than to see her granddaughter, Midshipman 1st Class Amber Lowman, graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy and toss her cap high in the sky. Determined, Jean made her way to Annapolis, Md., but, hampered with declining health, was physically unable to make it inside the stadium to see the commissioning ceremony. That day, Ensign Lowman graduated, became a commissioned naval officer, and achieved a milestone in the Lowman family that began in a historic movement more than 70 years earlier. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, there was a great need for additional military personnel. The country was pulled into World War II, and things began to drastically change. “The attack on Pearl Harbor changed my grandmother’s life, Amber Lowman said. “She felt compelled to serve, but found herself limited in her options, as women could not yet serve in the armed services. All of that was about to change with a movement allowing women to join the military, and Jean became a leader in that effort. In college, Jean joined the civil service and worked for the Navy in human resources and personnel at Moffett Field, Calif. There was an urgent need for administration workers in Honolulu, Hawaii, so she and 19 other women moved there to work as civilian administrators, in a successful trial program that helped lead to the creation of the well-known Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES). ISRAELI SOLDIERS FEEL COMRADERIE WITH U.S. By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

he press, the left and those on college campuses enjoy demonizing Israeli soldiers by calling them murderers and Fascists. But what they espouse is anything but the truth. They will never speak of Israelis being knifed to death and Iran’s recent firing of two ballistic missiles. These weapons are capable of reaching Israel and had a statement written on them, in Hebrew, reading “Israel must be wiped off the earth. Here are the thoughts of some former Israeli soldiers (http://www.standwithus. com/) about their views. Gilad is a retired Israeli soldier who was born in New York. While in the army, he served in the Paratroopers and Intelligence Corps as an officer for five years, managing undercover operations in the West Bank. He is very frustrated that Israeli soldiers are always singled out. “We constantly ask where is the outcry among the media, the college students and the human rights groups, Gilad said. “It becomes obvious nobody cares about our side, and that at times Jewish lives are less important. This propaganda is led by not only anti-Israeli feelings, but is also Anti-Semitic. They use freedom of speech to promote their agenda. They should be called out. But it does not surprise me that this is not happening, because they are just determined to destroy our country. Sagie concurs. He is a former artillery officer in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), served as a platoon commander in the Israeli Artillery Crops, a commander in the Officers Artillery Course and was a deputy-commander of an Artillery battery. “The media never shows the real picture, he said. “For example, they will show me as a soldier up against a young Palestinian child. People then get the impression that the Palestinian is the underdog. Sometimes the strong can also be underdogs. “Even when reporting a terrorist attack inside Israel, people hear two Palestinians killed with two Israelis. But in actuality, the Palestinians were the terrorists and

Just last month, Iran, flush with cash from the sanctions relief, announced that they will give slain Palestinian terrorists $7,000 if they become “martyrs of the intifada in occupied Jerusalem. Since the Palestinian knifing attacks have started, 34 Israelis have been killed and 404 injured, with 202 stabbings/attempted attacks, 83 shootings and 42 vehicular (ramming) attacks. “We are fighting on our own land, Sagie said. “So when I am taking my soldiers with me to fight in Gaza, sometimes the missiles that we are viewing, that Hamas shot headed to Israel, sometimes my soldiers, even me myself, can see the missiles going towards my home and to my soldiers’ home. That’s something that you can’t understand from just watching the news. “Not only is Army personnel attacked, but also civilians, mothers and children. A couple of women were playing golf one sunny Saturday morning. The first of the twosome teed-off and watched in horror as the ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. Indeed, the ball hit one of the men and he immediately clasped his hands together at his crotch, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man and immediately began to apologize. She then explained that she was a physical therapist and offered to help ease his “pain. “Please allow me to help, I am a physical therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you’d just allow me! She told him earnestly. “Ummph, oooh, nnnoo, I’ll be alright...I’ll be fine in a few minutes, he replied as he remained in the fetal position still clasping his hands together at his crotch. The woman takes it upon herself to begin to “ease his pain. She began to massage his groin. After a few moments she asked, “does that feel better? The man looked up at her and replied, “Yes, that feels pretty good ... but my thumb still hurts like hell!

A guy walks into a bar with his pet monkey. He orders a drink, and while he’s drinking, the monkey jumps all over the place, eating everything behind the bar. Then the monkey jumps on to the pool table and swallows a billiard ball. The bartender screams at the guy, “Your monkey just ate the cue ball off my pool table -- whole! “Sorry, replied the guy. “He eats everything in sight, the little bastard. I’ll pay for everything. The man finishes his drink, pays and leaves. Two weeks later, he’s in the bar with his pet monkey, again. He orders a drink, and the monkey starts running around the bar. The monkey finds a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabs it, sticks it up his butt, pulls it out and eats it. The bartender is disgusted. “Did you see what your monkey did now? he asks. “Yeah, replies the guy. “He still eats everything in sight, but ever since he swallowed that cue ball, he measures stuff first.

A man, who smelled like a distillery, flopped down on a subway seat next to a priest. The man’s tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a halfempty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes the disheveled man turned to the priest and said, “Say, Father, what causes arthritis? “Mister, it’s caused by loose living, being with cheap wicked women, too much alcohol, and a contempt for your fellow man. “Well, I’ll be damned, the drunk muttered, returning to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. “I’m very sorry, I didn’t mean to come on so strong. How

A priest and a shepherd from Australia participate in a TV game. After answering all the questions, there is a tie. So both are given one final assignment. It is to write a poem in three minutes, using the word “Timbuktu. It is city in Africa. The priest returns with the fruit of his inspiration: “I was a father all my life, I had no children, had no wife, I read the bible through and through on my way to Timbuktu ... “ The poem makes a great impression, and the priest smells a sweet victory. But then comes the shepherd, with his winning masterpiece: “When Tim and I to Brisbane went We met three women cheap to rent. They were three and we were two, So I booked one and Tim Booked Two ... “

A three year old walked over to a pregnant lady while waiting with his mother in the doctors office. He inquisitively ask the lady, “Why is your stomach so big? She replied, “I’m having a baby. With big eyes, he asked, “Is the baby in your stomach? She said, “He sure is. Then the little boy, with a puzzled look, asked, “Is it a good baby? She said, “Oh, yes. It’s a real good baby. With an even more surprised and shocked look, he asked... “Then why did you eat him?

Devil’s in the details

An older couple, who were both widowed, had been going out with each other for a long time. Urged on by their friends, they decided it was finally time to get married. Before the wedding, they went out to dinner and had a long conversation regarding how their marriage might work. They discussed finances, living arrangements, and so on. Finally, the old gentleman decided it was time to broach the subject of their physical relationship. “How do you feel about sex? he asked, rather tentatively. “I would like it infrequently “, she replied. The old gentleman sat quietly for a moment, adjusted his glasses, then leaned over towards her and whispered, “Is that one word or two?

Unfortunately, that has not been enough to stem the growth of government under either party. A Nov. 13, 2000 article by Edward H. Crane, president of the libertarian Cato Institute, said, “the combined budgets of the 95 major programs that the Contract with America promised to eliminate have increased by 13 percent. Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin noted in 2011, “Since taking office President Obama has signed into law spending increases of nearly 25 percent for domestic government agencies — an 84 percent increase when you include the failed stimulus. All of this new government spending was sold as ‘investment.’ “ If the Republican presidential candidates want to capture voters’ attention in this turbulent and unpredictable election season, 12 "QSJM

they should compose a new contract with voters. Every federal agency and program either has a charter that established it or authorizing legislation in which its purpose is stated. Heads of those agencies should periodically be required to come before Congress and justify, not just their budgets, but their existence. Are they living up to the charter or legislation that created their agency? If not, at least three options present themselves: Downsize the agencies and reduce their budgets to the size commensurate with whatever success they are having, privatize the agencies, or eliminate them. There remains a strain of the Puritan ethic in most Americans that begins with parents telling their children to eat their food because there are starving people in the world who don’t have access to such nourishment. Not wasting money is also a part of that ethic. First, though, we must get beyond the

If you have a health savings account, you can make contributions for 2015 up until the April tax filing deadline, said Jonathan Horn, lead technical manager on the tax policy and advocacy team at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Health savings accounts are special tax-free accounts that allow holders to set aside money to pay for medical costs. To qualify, you must have a health insurance plan that meets specific criteria, including a high deductible – at least $1,300 for an individual and $2,600 for a family in

2015. HSA contribution limits for 2015 are $3,350 for an individual and $6,650 for a family. Q: Is the deadline for making required withdrawals from an IRA extended as well? No. The deadline for those who must make their first withdrawal from a traditional IRA remains April 1. This so-called minimum required distribution deadline applies if you have an IRA, and turned 70 1/2 in 2015. If you didn’t take out the money, you’ll face a penalty equal to half the amount that you failed to withdraw. The rule also applies to other tax-deferred accounts like 401(k)s — unless you are still working — but not to Roth IRAs.

Shortly thereafter, in late 1972, Operation Linebacker II kicked into gear — another bombing campaign, this one aimed at bringing the North Vietnamese back to the bargaining table after they had earlier walked away. It worked, and by January 1973, a settlement was reached. All U.S. combat troops were withdrawn within a few months, although fighting continued for another two years before Saigon, South Vietnam’s capital, fell to the communists in 1975, when all Americans were evacuated from the region.

The offensive marked the peak of U.S. involvement in the war, with the Marines leading the charge to repel the communists, especially during the 77-day siege of the Marine base at Khe Sanh and in a month-long fight at Hue City. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), would allocate $10 million for the program, with each service dog costing $27,000 to train and insure. In order for veterans to remain eligibile for the program, they must be seeing a VA primary care doctor or mental health professional every three months. “The VA should use every tool at their disposal to support and treat our veterans, including the specialized care offered by service dogs, DeSantis said in a statement. “The PAWS Act is a simple bill that could have a dramatic—and potentially life-saving—effect on the lives of many.

would be shooting, because we’re bringing the Iraqis democracy and reconstruction and liberation and all of these things — promises that ultimately we did not fulfill. So, at first, there were honest people in uniform who did not understand what was happening around them. As time went on, that obviously affected morale. At the end of the day, everyone was a professional and there was a job to be done; however, over time, as the years started to go by, there was both an increasing cynicism I found amongst the fighting men and women about the reality of the mission and the reality of the possible outcomes. But also, bit by bit, a growing understanding of the complexity of the operation environment. What does al-Zarqawi represent to you? Oh, he represents a lot of things. He represents the present and the future. He represents a kind of holy war that Osama Bin Ladin never imagined in his wildest dreams. He represents the new normal that we are now living with. But on a broader, more existential level, which I think we touch upon in the film, Zarqawi represents that darker part of the human soul. It’s about the duality of man. It’s what Joseph Conrad wrote about in “Heart of Darkness. There’s a light and a dark inside of all of us. I think someone like Zarqawi found the most extreme form of the dark that is beyond the understanding of anyone of us with any sort of moral compass. But like any fighting man will know, we all have to go to those dark places to survive, to complete the mission, or to bring our friends home. I think something as ugly as Zarqawi poses a lot of questions about the nature of all of us. And until we grapple with those questions and come to understand those things, the ultimate answer to something like the Islamic State will not appear. How did your experience at war inform your overall worldview? You know yourself. We never see the world the same again, but would you ever want to? Until the day I die, I will walk with ghosts. But in some ways I consider

that a privilege. None of us will ever see the world with the same eyes again, but I would never trade that for anything. I think we see the world in a whole new light, and it’s a luminescent light. Our souls might be a lot darker but there’s something about life that we can see that I don’t think anyone other than the three million who served can possibly hope to see. Who did you make this film for? When I came home, one of the things that I came to accept is that I was honor bound to do something with all of those tapes. I was honor bound to do something for all of the lives that are captured in my footage. So, in some way, I made it for everyone who is in those tapes. By the same token, I made it for everyone who was not in those tapes — all of the people here back home. Our greatest hope with this film is that we nudge the needle of the audience’s understanding of war. We want this to be a war film that people don’t watch. We want this to be a war film that people actually feel. How do you hope American soldiers will react to this film? Let’s face it: we all trip over our Iraq or Afghan wars almost every day. They sneak up and bite us in moments when we least expect in ways we never saw coming. Hopefully, over time, we get better at learning how to deal with them. But these wars will never, ever leave us. It’s about management. It’s about trying to learn how to live the rest of our lives while dealing with this stuff, and carrying our wars, and carrying our dead, and carrying our living dead. Quite frankly, there was a point when I counted myself among the living dead. I don’t know how the veteran will respond to my film. I do know how some of the veterans in my film have responded, because I’ve reconnected with them, and I’ve been humbled by their reaction to the film. I have been brought to my knees and brought to tears by the way some of the soldiers in my film have responded. To me that means everything. "QSJM 15
