Mea Culpa Noun. 1. An acknowledgment of one’s faults or errors.

I

’m an American who loves our country, our military and our Constitution. I find it very hard to not to bash President Obama. He is without a doubt the worst president in the history of our country. He has shown his disdain for our country, Senate, House of Representatives and the Constitution. If anyone disagrees with his failed policies, he immediately attacks them and tries to belittle them. He has set back the Civil Rights movement at least 60 years or more. He has created a racial divide in our country so big that it might take 50 years or more to eliminate the that division. He has turned many Americans against the police forces across our nation. Most Americans felt that Mr. Obama was the right choice to put our country back together. We now realize what a complete mistake it was to put him as the first black president into office. Now, before everyone gets their dander up and calls me a racist, I was and would have been the biggest supporter of Herman Cain. My choice of the Republicans for the 2016 election is Dr. Ben Carson, Donald Trump or Carly Fiorina because none of them are politicians. My choice for the Democrats is Donald Duck, Daffy Duck or any other candidates that want to duck the issues and failures of our lame duck president — Barack Hussein Obama. The first and foremost duty of our president is to protect all American citizens. But he seems to be more interested in protecting all the Muslim terrorists, which he refuses to use the term, Islamic terrorist! What will it take to convince Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders that we must name our enemies in order to defeat them. Obama said that Isis is the JV team and claimed they are contained! How can he possibly ignore what happened on 9/11 and has continued for the last 15 years in MEA CULPA, continued on Page 10

any of us watched in horror as Paris was attacked by those who would later claim to represent the Islamic State.

In all, 129 innocent lives would be tragically taken from those whose only “crime was enjoying a late night concert or eating dinner at a local Parisian restaurant. The slaughtering of innocent lives once again took center stage on global news networks. It took eight men to carry out the attacks on Paris. No surprise there: It took just 19 men — armed, we must remember, with box cutters — to carry out the 9/11 attacks. We’ve more or less always been a welcoming nation. But charity shouldn’t come at the expense of national security. Just because we’ve allowed 1,900 or so Syrian refugees to relocate here since 2011 doesn’t mean we have to admit 10,000 more of them in the year ahead. Different situations require different

responses. The United States changed its refugee policy in the mid-1970s to accommodate boatloads of Vietnamese fleeing their communist rulers. We adjusted our laws again in 1980 to handle an influx of Cubans fleeing Fidel Castro’s godforsaken “worker’s paradise. But note the circumstances. The United States played a rather large role in instigating that refugee crisis from Southeast Asia 40 years ago. And Cuba is 90 miles off the coast of Florida. What’s nearer is dearer. We know the Islamic State is exploiting the Syrian refugee crisis to move its fighters into Europe, because their leaders have said so and we’ve seen the results in Paris. And Turkey just arrested eight jihadists posing as refugees. As it happens, the Wall Street Journal recently reported a brisk trade in stolen and forged passports in

Turkey. Some of the phony refugees are gaming Europe’s immigration laws in search of work or welfare. But others may not have such selfish motivations. One of the Paris jihadists reportedly had a fake Syrian passport with him. Some commentators seized on that story as evidence that the Syrian refugees aren’t the real problem. On the contrary, it’s strong evidence that the massive and often chaotic influx of refugees into Europe has given terrorists the opportunity they need to move freely now and wreak havoc later. We have been told by the White House that there is nothing to worry about in the U.S. because the Islamic State may have the ambition to do us harm, but “likely lacks the capabilities to attack us here. These “reassuring words are coming from the same administration who only hours before the Paris attack, told George Stephanopoulos that the Islamic State had been “contained. REFUGEE, continued on Page 11

FULL-TIME AIRMAN, PART-TIME MMA FIGHTER By Airman Daniel Brosam 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, MONT. — Mixed martial arts fighting is not for the faint hearted. It takes effort and full-time dedication to be the best of the best in the octagonal cage. As for Senior Airman Mark Wirth, 819th RED HORSE Squadron structural engineer, he’s got the motivation and dedication to rise from amateur to professional fighter. Wirth grew up in Fresno, California, where he got into a lot of fights as a child. He practiced backyard boxing and watched ultimate fighter shows which made him determined to take it further. “I started watching the ultimate fight shows and it got me interested in wanting to better myself, said Wirth. “It seemed like those guys were like superheroes almost. I wanted that feeling. Wirth started out practicing Muay Thai at a gym, a technique used for striking and kicking. Just as he was getting involved, things began to change in his personal life. “When I turned 19 my wife and I got married, said Wirth. “Times were getting tough so I had to push (my training) aside and think about my family more so we looked into the military. Wirth joined the Air Force but still continued to follow his passion for fighting, even after being stationed in Japan. He found a gym off base owned by a local Japanese man who took Wirth under his wing. The man taught Wirth more basics of fighting and Jiu Jitsu. That is when he found out about Friday night fights. The fights consisted of Japanese boxers and kickboxers, whom Wirth fought against with a not so surprising outcome. “I won every single one, said Wirth. “All

of my boxing and kickboxing matches. He was doing so well, the owner wanted to see how far Wirth wanted to go. “The owner of the gym offered me a professional MMA fight but I wasn’t ready, said Wirth. “I felt like I needed to do amateur MMA matches before doing professional MMA. Since then, Wirth has earned a combined record of eight wins and zero losses, holding a title belt for the 125 pound fly weight division for Fight Force, a group he fights for.

Wirth is a dedicated man with a dream to pursue professional fighting. He will continue to do what it takes to become professional until it begins to interfere with his wife and two kids, ages five and one. “(My wife) is probably one of my biggest supporters, said Wirth. “She realized how important this is to me and the potential I have. One of Wirth’s fellow Airmen and co-workers, Senior Airman Joseph Eschmann, 819th RHS structural engineer,

has attended all of Wirth’s fights since he has been stationed at Malmstrom. “I would say he knows what he’s doing, said Eschmann. “When we went TDY, he showed me how to put someone in a triangle, an arm bar and how to defend myself from a takedown. He actually took the time to show me how to do it. Eschmann said Wirth is a good guy, a hard worker and someone to count on when things need to get done. His fellow Airmen attend his fights to support and encourage him to follow his dream. “We have a big group and he said he always knows where we are because we are the loudest ones there, said Eschmann. “I think it’s really cool to see him do what he really likes. Wirth continues to train daily and eat properly to stay in shape and be prepared for his next fight whenever he is called. “I have to be the one to motivate myself, said Wirth. “That’s how bad I want it.

Craft beer’s big dilemma

HOLD OUT OR SELL OUT? FORTUNE

called out a specific beer we made.â€? Within 10 days of the deal’s closing, Cantwell gave notice he would leave the company he helped found. He resigned in April and has vowed to never speak to his cofounders again, soured by how the AB InBev transaction transpired. Andy Goeler, CEO of craft at AB InBev, contends that big beer brands like Budweiser are often mocked by the craft industry, so he sees no harm in “Big Brotherâ€? poking back. “It is important to note that isn’t a company message, it is a Budweiser brand message,â€? he says. “Each brand is allowed to have its own voice.â€? You’d be hard-pressed to find a more divisive issue in the craft beer community than Big Beer’s recent shopping spree for small brewers. It’s like the sale of any startup to a major corporation: The new parent company offers valuable marketing and distribution muscle, but the scrappy upstart runs the risk of losing its soul. “M&A isn’t a term I use a lot. I think you mean ‘selling out,’â€? says Stone Brewing co-founder Greg Koch. “Some of us got into this for our passion ‌ and wanting to fight ‘the man.’ Crazy as that may seem, there are some of us that may hold to that vision.â€? Koch, who recently announced plans to step down as CEO to assume the role of executive chairman, vows he won’t sell Escondido, Calif.-based Stone, and that because of his public comments on the topic, he hasn’t been courted by big

ith the recent announcements that local brewers St. Archer and Ballast Point are being bought out by large beer operations, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more divisive issue in the craft beer community than Big Beer’s shopping spree for small brewers. Dick Cantwell, a co-founder and former head brewer of Elysian Brewing, never wanted to sell his company. Founded in 1996 during a peak period for the craft beer industry, Seattle-based Elysian grew to sell over 50,000 barrels by 2014. A tiny brewer, considering the total U.S. craft beer market produces 22.2 million barrels each year, it was bought by Anheuser-Busch InBev last January. Elysian is one of five small brewers the world’s largest beer producer has acquired in the past five years. After AB-InBev first courted Elysian during a craft beer conference in April 2014, Cantwell soon found himself overruled by his other two co-founders, who wanted to sell the business. Loyal customers were outraged, and Cantwell was equally perturbed after AB InBev unveiled an ad campaign mocking the craft beer industry. “Let them sip their pumpkin peach ale, we’ll be brewing us some golden suds, a commercial teased. “We made a pumpkin peach ale, says Cantwell. “They called us out specifically in a mocking tone to show just how CRAFT BEER, continued on Page 10 ridiculous craft breweries were, and they 'PS BEWFSUJTJOH JOGPSNBUJPO DBMM t BEWFSUJTJOH!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN

Cutter hauls in 15 tons of cocaine this year alone A single U.S. Coast Guard cutter seized nearly 15 tons of cocaine in the Eastern Pacific this year as part of the most successful counternarcotics operation in the region since 2009, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement. The Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf unloaded the drug haul, along with 10 tons of cocaine seized by other U.S. and Canadian vessels, in the port of San Diego on Thursday, Coast Guard spokesman Dan Dewell said. In all, the drugs had a value of $748 million, according to a statement from Johnson released on Friday. In the Bertholf ’s single largest drug

Stimulant medications used to treat attention deficit problems and keep service members alert during long stretches of combat might increase vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder, a new study suggests. Defense Department researchers analyzing data from nearly 26,000 service members found that those with prescriptions for the stimulants were five times more likely to have PTSD. Drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin raise concentrations of the brain chemical norepinephrine, which has been shown to result in more vivid and persistent memories of emotionally charged situations. Traumatic memories are a hallmark of PTSD. For the new study, published this month

in the Journal of Traumatic Stress, researchers started with 25,971 active-duty troops who screened negative for PTSD and followed them from 2001 to 2008. The subjects are part of the Pentagon’s Millennium Cohort Study, which will track the mental health of service members for the next several decades. Of the 131 service members who were prescribed stimulants over the course of the study, a total of 20 -- or 15% -- also had PTSD. Controlling for a variety of socioeconomic, demographic and health factors, the researchers found that was five times the rate for everybody else. Overall, there were 1,215 cases of PTSD. Those who had been prescribed multiple stimulants and the biggest supplies of the drugs were the most likely to have PTSD. The results did not prove that the drugs caused the disorder. In the majority of cases, the data did not tell researchers whether the prescriptions preceded the onset of PTSD.

West Point bans cadet pillow fights

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Cadet pillow fights like the bloody one that left 30 injured this summer will be banned, and actions are being pursued against many of those involved, U.S. Military Academy officials said. First-year students, known as “plebes, organize the annual pillow fight as a way to build camaraderie after a grueling summer of training. But the pillow fight Aug. 20 escalated into a free-for-all with plebes being hit from behind and knocked to the ground. Injuries included a broken nose, a fractured cheek and 24 diagnosed concussions. One cadet was found unconscious. “While never officially sanctioned, it is now officially banned, and we will take More than 1,000 attend appropriate action to ensure that all facfuneral for veteran with ulty, staff, leaders, the Corps of Cadets and everyone at West Point knows that it no known family will not be tolerated, West Point Superintendent Lt. brewers or private equity firms. “They know my response would include the words ‘sand’ and ‘pound,’ he says. But is selling your company really selling out? Many craft brewers are perfectly happy with their new corporate parents. One of Cantwell’s co-founders, Elysian CEO Joe Bisacca, defends his decision to sell to AB InBev, noting that the small brewer nearly went out of business several times over the past decade. “Those dire straits can really shut you down and take innovation away, he says. “This model now—when something comes up—people at AB have marching orders to help us out. Tony Magee, founder of Petaluma, Calif.based Lagunitas lauded an opportunity to bring craft beer abroad in a recent 50% stake with Dutch brewer Heineken. Saint Archer co-founder Josh Landan said

his San Diego-based company “always wanted to get great beer into more people’s hands, when he sold a majority stake to MillerCoors. And when AB InBev bought Los Angeles-based Golden Road Brewing, president and co-founder Meg Gill said, “We want to be with the winning horse. All three of those sales went down just last September, and the big money keeps on buying rounds. Just last week, Milton, Del.-based Dogfish Head, the nation’s 13th-largest craft brewer, sold a minority stake to a private equity firm. In fact, there has been more than one craft beer deal per month over the past 14 months, according to Craftbrewingbusiness.com. So why all the deal making and why now? Heady growth from the craft beer industry is why. Volume is essentially flat for the overall $101.5 billion beer market, as big brands struggle with sliding sales (and flirt with mega-mergers). But craft beer now controls 11% of the total U.S. beer market, up from 5% in 2010,

according to trade organization The Brewers Association. “In the last two years, we’ve seen one by one, several strategic moves by the large global brewers to do mergers and acquisitions of smaller craft breweries in a more fast-paced manner than in the past, says Julia Herz, craft beer program director for The Brewers Association.

Why sell?

Beyond a price tag that can be worth tens of millions of dollars, a number of craft brewers who’ve recently sold their businesses list distribution as a key motivator. Many small beer makers wield regional strength, but getting into new markets can be tough, especially when many bars only allocate a few handles behind the bar to craft beers. Larger sales and marketing teams, established human resource departments, and fancier brewery equipment are also lures—as well as access to higher quality ingredients, which are one of craft brew’s biggest selling points. The launch of Blue Moon’s White IPA, for example, may not have happened without the might of parent company MillerCoors. The large brewer was able to procure rare hops used in the formula, and its sales team facilitated a connection with Buffalo Wild Wings, which quickly added the new beer to the restaurant chain’s taps. “I can’t stress enough how much the MillerCoors network offers, says Keith Villa, head brewmaster and founder of Blue Moon Brewing Co.

Don’t worry—craft isn’t doomed

Craft beer lovers can take comfort: The Brewers Association reports that there are now more than 4,000 active breweries in the U.S., so Big Beer buyouts can’t possibly match the pace of new businesses. 615 craft breweries opened nationwide in 2014 alone, and the Brewers Association estimates that three out of every four legal-aged adults live within 10 miles of a local brewery. Cantwell, who is now a quality ambassador for the Brewers Association, hasn’t ruled out a return to brewing beer, though he would have to wait until the non-compete clause in his contract with AB InBev expires. Meanwhile, he’s hopeful the craft beer industry can pursue alternatives to selling. He sees potential in a cooperative model that would enable craft breweries to work together for greater purchase power to buy hops and other key ingredients, as well as giving them better negotiating position for distribution. “I would laud such a business model, Greg Koch of Stone Brewing says. “You can maintain your soul and your creativity while facing the reality that you have some large industrial behemoths who are working to put you out of business.

One of the greatest cautionary tales that brewers should consider before selling their business is the case study of what happened to Austin-based Celis Brewery. Founded in 1992 by Pierre Celis, within a few years the company was growing almost too quickly to meet demand, so it sold a majority stake to Miller Brewing Co. in 1995. Roughly six years later— after Miller tinkered with the company’s

recipes, drastically pulled distribution, and the Celis family had departed the business—the brewery was shut down in early 2001. “You can’t control what the big breweries are going to do, says Christine Celis, daughter of Pierre and a former general manager of the Texas brewery. “Their standpoint is, ‘How can I make this product more profitable?’ It is just the way it is and sometimes the beer itself becomes a victim of the success. MillerCoors declined to comment. Pierre died in 2011, but Christine is in the process of establishing a craft brewery business in Austin. She says she intends to keep the new business in her family for as long as she can.

REFUGEE Continued from Page 1

We also know Obama administration officials have conceded that U.S. screening procedures are anything but foolproof. FBI Director James Comey last month told a congressional committee that “a number of people who were of serious concern had slipped through as Iraq War refugees. “There’s no doubt, he said, “that was the product of a less than excellent vetting. When considering our refugee policy, it isn’t wrong to ask if the risks outweigh the rewards. A recent FOX News poll found that two-thirds of the public, a broad crosssection including black and white, all age and income groups, and a plurality of self-identified Democrats, opposes the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the United States. If the president wants to change those numbers, he can start addressing the public’s concerns. Instead, President Obama chose to take cheap political shots instead of giving legislators cover to support his policy, he suffered a crushing bipartisan defeat in the House of Representatives. The good news, however, is that the House vote for a pause is not a rejection of refugees. It is just a pause, and Obama should view it as an opportunity. It’s not as though Obama has not paused refugee processing when he wanted to in the past. He did so in 2011, when his administration halted all Iraqi refugee

resettlements for six months. It was a decision he could not have taken lightly. For unlike the current holdup, which might at worst consign some people to a slightly longer stay in a safe U.S.funded refugee camp, his decision actually did result in at least one Iraqi who had helped the U.S. being assassinated while waiting for refugee status. The reason Obama halted the entire refugee program was that an Iraqi refugee who had been let into the country in 2009, Waad Ramadan Alwan, living in Bowling Green, Ky., turned out to be an al Qaeda bomb-maker responsible for killing several American soldiers. His involvement with al Qaeda was confirmed by his fingerprints on a bomb trigger that American forces had retrieved in the field. After this discovery, Alwan was caught up in a terrorist sting operation. He and a relative had plotted to ship arms to al Qaeda in Iraq and to assassinate an Army officer stateside. One hopes that the Alwan saga was enough to make U.S. officials strengthen the screening process substantially, adding more input from the available military intelligence that had previously been missing, and that it is now watertight. But all on its own, the story demonstrates that current fears among two-thirds of the public are not irrational, even if they should not indefinitely override America’s role in sheltering to those fleeing terrorism. Knowing what we know now, the United States shouldn’t import more potential threats as a goodwill humanitarian gesture.

-- sendoff for a brave veteran. Aldridge was memorialized with a standing-room only service at the Lawrence United Methodist Church in Lawrence, Ind. Hundreds lined the walls of the facility and its vestibule after all the seats were filled. Paul Adams, a member of the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard, a group of former servicemen who attend over 50 veteran funerals annually, told the paper that despite the fact they do not personally know each veteran they memorialize, each funeral is very emotional for all of them.

Funeral service organizers called Aldridge “the unclaimed veteran in their public invitation. Reviewing Aldridge’s enlistment paperwork in the hopes of learning more about him, Brig. Gen. Stewart Goodwin learned that after the former Marine was honorably discharged, he moved to Indiana to care for his mother. After his mother died in 1997, he lived alone until moving into the nursing home in 2004. At the service, the Rev. Ron May said no matter how little was known about the man they were honoring, “In [enlisting], he said ‘I will not live for myself alone. I will live, I will serve for others’.

Three hymns

One Sunday, a pastor asked his congregation to consider giving a little extra in the offering plate. He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns. After the offering plates were passed, the pastor noticed that someone had contributed a $100 bill. Extremely grateful, he wanted to personally thank the generous person before the whole congregation. A quiet, elderly widow shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front. Slowly she made her way to the pastor. He told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much and asked her to pick out three hymns. Her eyes brightened as she pointed to the three handsomest men in the congregation: “I’ll take him and him and him.
