Uniting Hearts Through Arts MILAPFEST

Artist Development

Milapfest is Britain’s leading Indian Arts Development Trust, producing world-class performances, education and artist development opportunities. Milapfest’s aim is to ‘Unite Hearts through Arts’ by providing audiences, aspiring artists and teachers with memorable and inspirational experiences in Indian Arts through a dynamic programme of performances, tours, commissions, festivals and innovative educational projects. In the exciting and challenging task of building and strengthening today’s multicultural Britain, our committed endeavour is to unite the hearts and minds of all communities through an exhilarating celebration of arts and culture.

Samyo Samyo is Britain’s National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music. It is a unique musical phenomenon uniting two great musical traditions, that of north and south India with orchestral improvisations and contemporary western influences. It is leading the way for the next generation of British Indian musicians while creating new avenues for new collaborative work. See more at www.milapfest.com/samyo.

Tarang Tarang is the National Ensemble for Indian Music. Created by Milapfest in 2004, it was conceived to create new career pathways for young musicians of exceptional talent. It offers expert training with acclaimed musicians and major performance opportunities to its members to support professional development and to impart on them the skills to thrive in the music industry. Currently Tarang has a membership of twenty four young musicians, and celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2014.

Ratna Awards In 2013, Milapfest launched the very first national award for Sangeet Ratna (Young Musician of the Year) and Nritya Ratna (Young Dancer of the Year). Funded by Arts Council England, the Ratna Awards offer recognition and provide further development opportunities and mentoring to winners each year. Candidates from across Britain are shortlisted and the awardees are selected by a distinguished international panel of judges.

Continued Profesional Development (CPD) Milapfest is committed to providing performance and educational opportunities for talented musicians and dancers in Britain. This is achieved through a number of inter-connected projects, right from our weekly Arts School classes in Liverpool to masterclasses, summer schools and specially created performance opportunities which take place nationally and internationally.

Awards & Fellowships Milapfest offers a wide range of travelling fellowships, bursaries and scholarships which provide crucial support to musicians, dancers, performers and teachers to enable them to get enhanced training. These awards have supported and sustained many artists over the past eight years and are in addition to the commissions, showcases and educational support we extend out each year.

Education

Performances

Dance India Dance India is a unique week-long residential dance school with training offered in Indian classical dance by top performers and teachers of India. As a unique dance movement, the school supports the learning, development and performance of Indian dance across the globe, with schools now taking place in both the UK and Singapore. The UK school, based in Liverpool, provides an intensive week of training where participants completely immerse themselves in the world of Indian dance. During their stay, students take part in a wide range of activities, learning experiences, training opportunities and performances.

Arts School

Music India In a residential, fully immersive environment, Music India provides world-class training in Indian music. The school is open to participants of two national orchestras Samyo and Tarang, and to young emerging artists and students from any background. The festival-style course provides lectures, interactive sessions, individual training and performances for a holistic and intensive experience.

Milapfest’s Arts School is a weekly programme of courses offered at the beautiful Cornerstone Building of Liverpool Hope University. There are both music and dance programmes on offer, many of which are offered in a variety of levels for adults and children of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Each course follows a syllabus that has been collaboratively designed by the course teachers and Milapfest’s Education Department. The curriculum covers practice, performance, and theory. Tutors at Arts School are all highly qualified musicians and dancers, many of whom are performing artists in their own right.

Instruments India Instruments India is Milapfest’s latest initiative to bring audiences closer to the music and instruments of Indian classical music. This new web resource will guide you through the sounds, music and history of each instrument seen on stage at Milapfest concerts across the UK and beyond. Music for the Mind & Soul This unique concert series is both a flagship for our performance work in Indian music, and also a musical experience which provides a refreshing window on the new generation of Indian musicians emerging on the world music scene. Over the past 20 years, the series has featured national and international stars and emerging musicians of note. Music for the Mind and Soul remains the only year round three city concert series, which continues to grow year after year with a committed and enthusiastic audience.
