Sligo Jazz 2019

Page 1

Sligo Jazz Festival is one of Europe’s most unique. Six days of workshops, masterclasses, ensemble sessions, jam sessions and, of course, concerts. Most of the events take place at IT Sligo from 10am to 4pm each day. Some of the world’s most accomplished and respected jazz musicians come to share their craft to an enthralled summer school of over 120 participants each year. They are joined in their pursuits by many of Ireland’s prominent jazz players and educators. What makes this festival so unique is the nature of the performances. Many of the concerts are one-off events, drawing from the amazing pool of musicians in our teaching faculty at our disposal each July. We also have visiting acts who are not teaching on the summer school, including one of the UK’s finest youth orchestras and a young Brazilian group that will blow many minds. A varied line up of Nat King Cole classics, funky fusion, big band music, Indian Konnakol music, a bit of Steely Dan, some modern jazz, world music and even overtone singing will be packing them in at various venues in Sligo. There are a few notable differences at this year’s event from previous events. Our twicedaily jam sessions at 6pm and 10pm are located at Andersons this time round. We also have a different format in the late jam session. Each night we will feature one musician from our faculty, given licence to invite others from the pool of amazing musicians to join them, for a short 45 minute set each night in the middle of our famous jam session. This will add immensely to six exciting nights of great music. Enjoy!

Overtone singing is a vocal technique where it seems like one person is singing two notes at the same time by filtering and amplifying the natural harmonics in the human voice. It can be used artistically as a musical instrument or can function as an educational tool for singers, choral conductors and voice teachers. Her YouTube video “Polyphonic Overtone Singing” has received more than 11 million views. If you’re interested in learning about how Anna-Maria does this, she will be giving workshops at our summer school in IT Sligo on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, July 24/25 at 10am, see sligojazz.ie for details. “Magnificently confusing” - Ashton Kutcher

Unforgettable: The Magic of Nat King Cole with Sachal Vasandani plus Liane Carroll, Sara Colman & the SJP International Band 8pm Hawk’s Well Theatre €20/17conc./€10 u18s Booking: 071-9161518/www.hawkswell.com Vocalist Sachal Vasandani is one of the great singers of our time and the perfect man for a Nat “King” Cole centennial celebration. Sligo Jazz Project is honoured to be the first European festival to host this show since its debut at the Lincoln Centre last December with John Clayton and Wynton Marsalis’s band. Sachal will be bringing famed US arranger John Clayton’s Lincoln Centre arrangements direct from New York, along with soloists including Jazz FM instrumentalist of the year, saxophonist Jean Toussaint, Paul Booth, trumpeter Ryan Quigley and trombone ace Shannon Barnett as well as a member of last December’s Lincoln Centre orchestra, Corkman Paul Dunlea, also on trombone. A distinctive, groundbreaking artist in his own right, Vasandani’s “beautiful, velvety voice and remarkable stage presence” (NPR) nonetheless draw comparisons to Nat “King” Cole himself. Vasandani is particularly well known for his Cole tribute project, which has featured classics like “Unforgettable,” “When I Fall in Love,” and “Straighten Up and Fly Right.” Tonight’s concert also features songs from SJP’s other two amazing 2019 vocalists, Sara Colman and Liane Carroll.
