In this, the month of the resolution, we at Southlake Style are bringing you much of what you need to bring your new year’s wellness goals to fruition. In the pages that follow, we’ll introduce you to a heaping portion of healthy local eateries, some fitness fashion that’s far from dry-fit, and a high-tech bike that will have you spinning with friends from around the world. But despite all of this, I’m most excited to share another story of achievement in the face of adversity—the type of story that will keep you motivated long after you put this issue on the shelf. This time last year we ran a story featuring Madi Davis, the talented and spirited young singer who didn’t let severe hearing loss keep her from becoming a contestant on The Voice. Nearly a year later, we were still cheering for her as she proved that no hardship was going to stand in her way. Is it her talent that’s putting her over the top? Even though she has it in spades, I don’t think so. Ambition and a positive attitude are just as vital to what launched her life into the stratosphere. Carroll Middle School student Christopher Tracht has the same drive and determination, and is bound for similar successes in life. Born without a fibula in his left leg, Christopher underwent an amputation well before his first birthday. Today, at the age of 14, it appears nothing can slow down this star of the school’s track and baseball teams. Christopher may be blessed with the support of the state’s top physicians, but even the best medicine and prosthetics can only give so much. Ultimately, it is this young man’s attitude and determination that keeps him pushing on long after others have given up. If you’re like me, you’ve got a few goals in mind this year too. Healthy attitudes are contagious—and that’s exactly why we share stories like theirs. If we could have just a bit more of their resolve, we all might meet our goals too. Here’s to a successful 2016!

BLACKSTAR DAVID BOWIE JANUARY 8

No Longer a Black Sheep A musician and actor for more than 50 years, David Bowie took a hiatus from performing in the 2000s. When his comeback album, “The Next Day,” arrived in 2013, it reached chart-topping status immediately. However, fans and critics were still not sure what to expect when it was leaked that a 26th studio album from Bowie would debut on his 69th birthday in 2016. But last year, after Bowie released a single and subsequent music video from the upcoming album, it all became clear. Bowie was definitely back, and “Blackstar” sealed the deal.

LEVEL UP YOUR LIFE STEVE KAMB JANUARY 12 Character Building Not your standard self-help book, Level Up

Your Life: How to Unlock Adventure and Happiness by Becoming the Hero of Your Own Story, asks readers to make their life journey a quest. This “epic quest” author Steve Kamb wants you to embark on is more than just taking the path less traveled. Your life’s path should be filled with leveling up, unlocking extra lives and discovering hacks. Sounds like a video game, right? That is exactly one of the inspirations behind Kamb’s fun take on the adventure called life.

THE X-FILES FOX JANUARY 24

THE HATEFUL EIGHT IN THEATERS JANUARY 8

Rocky Mountain Mystery What happens when you mix a Wyoming mountain snowstorm with bounty hunters, lawmen and, well, bad guys? A story that unfolds only the way Quentin Tarantino and the Weinstein Company can bring to the big screen. Starring Kurt Russell, Walton Goggins, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, Bruce Dern, Zoe Bell, Michael Madsen and Demian Bichir, “The Hateful Eight” hits theaters nationwide January 8. Now, if you did your math, you’ll notice there are nine characters in the movie. We’ll just have to see how the odd man (or woman) out fares.

10 •JAN 16

Do You Believe? Cult followers of Chris Carter’s “The X-Files” (1993-2002) will be pleased to know that after much speculation of the show’s return to Fox, they could, in fact, trust someone. The truth was out there, and X-Philes had every right to believe. Fans are ready for the new six-episode miniseries, which will pick up roughly where the 2008 film, “X-Files: I Want to Believe,” left off. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as Mulder and Scully, and a few regulars will return also, including William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man.

community GRACE CHRISTMAS COTTAGE BRIGHTENED THE SEASON FOR FAMILIES IN NEED Providing warmth, comfort and a little bit of Christmas magic to those in need is what Christmas Cottage is all about. This program, which ran from December 8-22, provided new, unwrapped gifts to families facing financial hardship due to limited income or recent emergency. Each qualified family was given a hypothetical “budget” that allowed the parents to “purchase” donated toys, home goods and appliances in a private, store-like setting. This unique approach allowed families to budget their resources and select unique presents while preserving the family’s dignity. More than 2,700 individuals and families are served each holiday season.

DURHAM STUDENT FEATURED IN AMERICAN GIRL CATALOG If you flip through the American Girl catalog, you’ll see fifth grader Brooklyn Schroeder. She’s also been featured on the American Girl website. Last July, Brooklyn was invited to a photo shoot at the American Girl store in Dallas. Her agent said that this was the “crème de la crème of jobs; it’s the job that all the little girls hope for.” When Brooklyn saw her photos on the American Girl site and in the catalog, she reacted like any girl would: with sheer excitement. “When my mom showed me the pictures, I screamed my heart out! I feel like I’m standing on top of the world right now,” she said. Her mom, Amy, adds that the experience has been so fun and memorable for her daughter. “She had such a great time at the shoot,” she said, “and now she gets to relive that day [through] the photos.” CARROLL THEATER ENTERTAINED WITH CINDERELLA WALTZ Carroll Theater Department added a little comedy, farce and fantasy to the holiday season with the extraordinarily entertaining one-act play, Cinderella Waltz. Guest-directed by award-winning director, Demond Wilson, President and founder of The Perfect Performance, Cinderella Waltz was a thrilling experience for Carroll Theater students, and kept show-goers on the edge of their seats with plenty of twists and turns. Set in the intimate Black Box Theater on the CSHS campus, the show ran for two nights last month.

SUNSTONE RAISES THE BARRE Commit to Be Fit in 2016

S

unstone wants to meet you where you are. Through understanding the importance of both steady aerobic and high intensity exercise, Sunstone has designed a variety of classes that keep your body and mind engaged, giving you the opportunity to personalize your experience and develop your own fit lifestyle. CLASSES GALORE One of the perks to practicing at Sunstone is its extensive schedule. Both the Southlake and Alliance Town Center locations offer a wide variety of classes each week and are open from 5:45 a.m. - 8 p.m, Mon-Fri, 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sat-Sun, almost a class every hour. The duration of classes varies from 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes in order to cater to students’ busy schedules. Sunstone covers all the bases when it comes to group fitness. Offering five different types of class categories gives students the flexibility to customize a weekly fitness routine that fits their lifestyle. YOGA • Hatha – This class consists of a series of sequenced yoga postures presented in a cumulative order to maximize calorie burn, improve strength, increase flexibility, as well as bring calmness and focus to the mind. • Vinyasa/Flow – This class is set to music and comprised of postures linked with specific transitional movements that will strengthen the entire body and increase range of motion in the spine, shoulders and hips. The body and mind connection is heightened through the pairing of successive movements and coordinated breathing.

FITNESS – These fitness classes incorporate a variety of fun, effective, accessible, safe routines that will challenge your physical limits. Weights and other added resistance help you hit your maximum heart rate, fast tracking results that you might never see in body weightonly exercises. Classes are designed to help you find your edge as you build physical and cardiovascular strength through each movement.

• Resistance Stretching – This unique class serves to restore and improve overall performance with a fusion of yoga, Pilates and Sunstone’s unique resistance stretching. It is designed to strengthen and balance weak areas in the body, deepening active range of motion while working on active strengthening techniques.

PILATES – Derived from traditional mat-based Pilates principles, this class focuses on the powerhouse muscles and provides a rigorous full-body fitness experience. The abdomen, back, inner thighs and buttocks will receive special attention during this naturally energetic class paired with up-beat music.

WELCOME TO THE MARQ It’s been nearly 20 years in the making, and THE MARQ SOUTHLAKE IS OFFICIALLY OPEN. Come on over.

I

f you’ve spent any amount of time at Bicentennial Park over the past 15 months, you’ve seen the cranes, tractors and construction hat-clad workers bustling about. And you’ve no doubt noticed the spectacular structures that have been going up as a result of all the activity. Together, these buildings encompass what has been called “a modern marvel in the making.” You could call it that, or you can call it by its official name: The Marq. It’s Southlake’s very own community center, and it’s now open for residents to come enjoy. The Marq is the area’s newest destination for just about everything: weddings, concerts, business meetings, birthday parties and more. And that’s just Phase 1. Because of the sheer magnitude of the project, it’s being constructed in two phases. Phase 1, named Legends Hall, opened last month and boasts 23,000 square feet of space that includes a ballroom, multipurpose conference and meeting spaces, a club lounge, senior activity center, catering kitchen and an outdoor amphitheater and events space. All meeting spaces are equipped with audiovisual support and offer a variety of room configurations. Plus, each room is equipped with big-screen TVs that can be used for showing presentations, slideshows and movies. So whatever event or gathering you have in mind, The Marq can easily accommodate. Construction on Phase 2, called Champions Club, is slated to begin this fall with an estimated open date in early 2018. Currently under design, it will be approximately 84,000 square feet with spaces for fitness, performance training, 24 •JAN 16

a gym, indoor jog/walk track, indoor aquatics, indoor playground, party rooms, child watch and multipurpose classrooms for programs. “The second phase of the facility will encompass all of your traditional recreation components with a few unique enhancements,” says Danielle Nelson, Sales Specialist with The Marq. “When all is said and done, The Marq will be a special place for the Southlake community to come together and spend time with one another. There is something for everyone of all ages here.” The Marq is a community center not just in Southlake, but for Southlake. “What makes The Marq unique is that it was specifically designed to meet the needs of the Southlake community,” says Nelson. “It is unlike any other facility.”

MAKING THE MARQ Residents asked for it, and the city delivered. A community recreation center has been in the City of Southlake’s Parks Master Plan since 1996. But it wasn’t until more than a decade later that the project took top priority after it frequently appeared in citizen surveys. “In 2010, Southlake hosted a series of public meetings to determine what components residents wanted to see in a multipurpose community center,” explains Nelson. “From that feedback, the City Council narrowed the scope of the project to a Community Recreation Center that would encompass event and meeting spaces, an outdoor amphitheater, a new senior activity center and a state-of-the-art recreation center.” SOUTHLAKE STYLE

BY AUDREY SELLERS In August 2013, plans for a community center officially got underway. City Council approved $1.72 million to design Phase 1, and the site plan was approved in June 2014. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in September 2014, with City Council declaring an official name for the facility a month later. Emotions run high for Mayor Laura Hill just thinking about everything that went into The Marq – and continues to go into it. “There is a deep sense of pride that is hard to put into words,” she says. “I remember attending my first meeting about a recreation center in early 2000 as an interested resident. If you had told me then that the day it opened I would be the mayor, I could have never imagined it.” What makes it even sweeter is that this $15 million facility is completely paid for, funded by a half-cent sales tax. The expected revenue is just over $470,000, and Phase 1 is expected to create 20 jobs, according to Vicky Schiber, Communications and Marketing Manager, Community Services Department, for the City of Southlake.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The beauty of The Marq is that it’s here to be what the community wants and needs it to be, whether residents are seeking a unique venue for a business function or a place to relax with neighbors and friends. The venue is open to all, and if you want to reserve a room for a meeting, party or event (rental fees vary), there’s a 20-percent discount for any resident, business or nonprofit in Southlake. Even before The Marq’s grand opening, Nelson had 35 events already on the books including weddings, a quinceañera, a bar mitzvah, school fundraisers, community luncheons, corporate seminars and a sports banquet. These don’t include the many upcoming city-sponsored events such as the Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Dance, Monster Mash and Breakfast with Santa, all which will be held in Legends Hall this year. Community members who have eagerly awaited The Marq’s arrival have already embraced their new community center. “It’s been wonderful to experience the true excitement the residents of Southlake have for The Marq,” Nelson says. We’re getting in on all the excitement, too. We’re hosting our “Best Of” party at The Marq later this month, making Southlake Style the first to hold a non-city event. The timing of the venue’s grand opening couldn’t have been better for our annual event celebrating great people and milestones from the past year. The Marq is certainly a testament to greatness. “I want to thank our former mayors, councilmembers and Board and Commission members who volunteered thousands of hours on this project. They have truly left their ‘Marq’ on Southlake,” says Mayor Hill. “The honor of opening The Marq with City Manager Shana Yelverton and our incredible city staff is one of the high points of my time as mayor. Every resident is going to be in awe. This is the first step on the path to many wonderful community memories.” If you haven’t stopped by to see what the facility is all about, The Marq offers guided tours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “It’s so much fun to be able to show the actual beautiful spaces within Legends Hall instead of renderings and floor plans,” Nelson says. “Legends Hall can host events as small as a two-person meeting to an event as large as a 300-person wedding. It’s a very versatile event venue.”

A LOOK INSIDE The Marq is all about offering something for everyone in the community, including seniors. Now housed inside The Marq, Southlake’s Senior Activity Center offers a variety of events and programming for adults 55 and older. Whether seniors want a place to gather with friends to exercise, relax with a good book, or even bake some homemade treats, the space is a go-to destination. It features a large lounge 26 •JAN 16

area, a kitchen with café-style seating and a cozy alcove library with a fireplace. “Two of the most anticipated spaces at the new center include the Wellness Room and Parlor,” Nelson says. “The Wellness Room is a dedicated fitness space with treadmills, elliptical machines and strength-training equipment. The Parlor is a game room that features two pool tables, a poker table and lounge-style seating in front of bigscreen TVs.” The space is also open for various citysponsored community events and classes. “The City will be working with various organizations such as the Community Band, Apex Arts League and Arts Council Northeast to host art-related programs and performances,” Nelson says. If you’re looking for a spot to host a corporate happy hour or unique birthday party, check out the Club Lounge. This space, which accommodates up to 50 guests, has a built-in bar, wall-mounted TVs, a faux-tin ceiling and opens onto the Terrace for a private indoor/outdoor venue. And then there’s the majestic Traditions Ballroom, a 5,000-square-foot space that’s ideal for nearly any event, from weddings to charity galas and corporate events. It can accommodate up to 300 seated guests, and for a more intimate gathering, the ballroom can be divided into three separate rooms. “It is equipped with direct access to the catering kitchen, a built-in dance floor with stage, has a state-of-the-art audiovisual system and opens onto the Terrace overlooking the promenade and Aria,” explains Nelson. Aria is The Marq’s outdoor amphitheater. With the ability to accommodate more than 1,000 SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

guests, the space is perfect for outdoor events ranging from concerts and performances to a magical wedding beneath the stars.

A VENUE TO LOVE For those planning a wedding, The Marq is a gem – and it’s easy to see why. It’s set in an award-winning park and features dramatic architecture, meticulous landscaping, and even fire and water elements. Combine all this with the option of an indoor or outdoor ceremony, and The Marq is a beautiful spot to say “I do.” “The versatility of The Marq is what makes it stand out as a premiere wedding destination,” Nelson says. Not only can the venue accommodate all sizes and styles of weddings, but it offers unique options as well. For example, if a bride and groom want to put a creative twist on catering or late-night snacks, there are parking spots on the promenade for food trucks. The Marq also has an open vendor policy, allowing couples to choose their own caterer and provide their own alcohol when renting the facility. “There are of course rules associated with this,” Nelson says, “but it helps our guests with their budget and it allows them to truly personalize their events.” Last August, the venue geared up for its grand opening by giving away a free dream wedding. The giveaway, called “Married at the Marq,” invited couples everywhere to enter for a chance to win a ceremony and reception at The Marq for up to 180 guests, as well as a plethora of services and surprises sponsored by local businesses. The winning bride, Lindsey, is a Carroll grad who’s marrying her fiancée, Kyle, in April. “I feel so lucky and am excited to spend our big day in Southlake where I grew up,” she says. “It means a lot to me.” From brides making wedding wishes to neighbors gathering together, The Marq is a dream realized for an entire community. A city that prides itself on its community focus and hometown feel needs a central spot to come together. Now it has one. “The Marq will take your breath away,” says Mayor Hill. “It’s the icing on the cake for our great city.” When you consider all that the venue is bringing to the community, we have one more reason to be proud to call Southlake home. hey are either set for you by others, or you create them for yourself. Fortunately for his teammates and coaches, neither scenario applies to Christopher Tracht, a student at Carroll Middle School. He’s your typical 14-year-old boy with favorite classes (Texas or U.S. history), a favorite place to hang out (the outdoors), and favorite sports (it’s a tossup between cycling and running). But what’s not typical is his determination and grit. He allows nothing to get in the way of his Olympic-sized aspirations. Not even the fact that he became an amputee before his first birthday. Christopher was born with fibular hemimelia, a birth defect in which his left leg was missing the fibular bone, which in turn caused a foot deformity. His dad, Scott, remembers those first weeks of Christopher’s life. “My wife and I met with the pediatrician just a few hours after Christopher was born, and they immediately recommended Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas,” he recalls. It was the orthopaedic surgeons at Scottish Rite Hospital, one of the nation’s leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopaedic conditions, who recommended a Symes Amputation, which is the foot only. However, his left leg is about five inches shorter than his right, so the prosthesis Christopher would be fitted with four to six weeks after the amputation would be for the lower left leg below the knee. But, says Scott, although this was a significant setback for someone at such an early age, having the prosthesis never slowed his son down. “He was walking by the time he was 13 months old,” Scott says. “And the rest is history.”

ince age three, Christopher has been an active athlete, and according to his dad, if you ever saw his son compete, you’d have no idea that he has a prosthesis. For Chris, it’s never been a matter of settling for a sport that fits his limitations. Instead, it’s more about reaching beyond them. “There’s never really been a time when I thought I couldn’t do anything that other kids could,” Christopher says. He skis, hunts, plays baseball, runs and participates in many other sports. The prosthesis has never inhibited his athletic desires or abilities. And while Christopher knows no limitations to what he can try to accomplish, it’s not always that simple for his coaches. Joe Armato, who is also a family friend, has coached Christopher on a select baseball team, the Panthers, for the last three years. He recalls the first time he met Christopher at tryouts. “At the time, I had no idea he was an amputee,” Armato remembers. “When he came over to me I noticed he was wearing a t-shirt with the word ‘orthopaedic’ on it. Since we live in an area where a lot of orthopaedic surgeons reside, I asked Chris if his dad was a doctor.”

oing to Texas Scottish Rite every three months or so for adjustments to his current prosthesis is just another part of Christopher’s story. Steve Ronde has been Christopher’s prosthetist since 2007.

“Now, it would go through the mind of any coach of a higher-level select team that they can’t have a kid on their team with a disability who wouldn’t be able to perform,” Armato admits. “However, after watching Chris play, it was almost as if I didn’t even know he had a prosthesis.”

Armato was not expecting Christopher to respond: “No, I have a prosthetic leg.”

“Technology has changed over the years, and as a result, so have prosthetics. Not only does Chris visit the hospital for new fittings and tunings as he ages, he is also able to keep up with the latest strides in the field,” says Ronde, a certified and licensed prosthetist and orthotist at Texas Scottish Rite. The older he gets, the more school Christopher misses. And if it were not for his understanding teachers, he says, it may be even more difficult. “I get frustrated sometimes because it’s tough going back and forth to the hospital,” Christopher says. “But it’s just a part of my life, and I’ve gotten used to it. Plus, we get to go out for breakfast on hospital days, which makes it not so bad.” Ronde remembers that in the beginning Christopher was fitted with a relatively basic prosthesis, but it didn’t keep him from his life of sports. Now, there are more high-tech prosthetics for running that allow him to compete at the highest level. “Chris is definitely one of my more active patients, and I’ve been here 30 years,” Ronde says. “He is very enthusiastic about running and playing sports. He’s really a natural. I have no doubt we will see him at the Paralympics one day.”

oinciding with the Olympics, the Paralympics offer sport opportunities for athletes with a primary impairment such as a limb deficiency. Christopher’s below-the-knee amputation falls under this qualifying category. But he must jump a few hurdles to make it to the international stage of competition. For the past five years, Christopher has participated in the nationally recognized UCO Endeavor Games, a qualifier for the Paralympics. Presented by the University of Central Oklahoma, the annual event allows athletes with physical disabilities to compete in a multi-sport event. “They have everything at the Endeavor Games,” Christopher says. “I’ve tried most every sport at the event, but track and cycling are my favorites. I compete in the 20K cycling event each year.” Christopher has won numerous medals at the games, including, most notably, a gold medal for the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash, and the long jump. In order to compete in running events, Christopher needs a running blade, which is a special prosthesis made just for running. “The Challenged Athletes Foundation in San Diego has opened up many opportunities for Chris,” his dad says. “It was through this organization that Chris was able to get a running blade.” Travis Ricks, Sr. Programs Manager & Athlete Relations for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, has worked with Christopher and his family over the past few years to help him obtain grants for tuning prosthetics, as well as fund travel to events such as the San Diego Triathlon Challenge. “I see a talent in Christopher that isn’t in most kids his age,” Ricks says. “He is fiercely competitive, but in such a way that makes you want to see him succeed. He is an athlete through and through.” It is through organizations such as the Challenged Athletes Foundation and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital that Christopher has been invited to do so many incredible things, Scott says. In 2012, Christopher had the opportunity to participate in the Dallas Marathon, but not as a runner … yet. Each year, one patient of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children serves as the Junior Race Director for the marathon. This individual represents thousands of children treated at the hospital. Chris was chosen as the 2012 Junior Race Director, and remembers the experience fondly. “I was featured on ‘Good Morning Texas’ and spoke to many people about the event,” he says. “But the best part was starting the race. I’ve run a lot of 5Ks, and I hope to run, maybe, a half marathon one day.” Running, well, runs in the family. His mom, Niki, has always been an avid runner and actually ran the half marathon at Christopher’s Race Director debut in 2012. His sister Cate, who is a sophomore at Carroll Senior High School, runs Cross Country and track. It is through his involvement in Cross Country and track at Carroll Middle School that he continues to hone his skills. And the positive reinforcement he receives from coaches and his peers helps him to excel.

Zach Sellers, who has coached Christopher in Cross Country and track for a little more than two years, has accolades to share about Christopher’s performance both on and off the track. “Chris makes the most of his opportunities in any situation he’s in,” Sellers says. “Even with the hand he has been dealt, he still has a great outlook on life and a positive attitude both in sports and in school. Kids look to him as a leader and someone they can learn from. He is a guy other teammates and students emulate, both in the classroom and on the field.” His baseball coach agrees. “Chris is one of the leaders on the team because he inspires,” Armato says. “The other players, both on his team and opposing teams, are able to see what he has been able to accomplish with what he’s been given. People look at him and say, ‘If Chris can do this, I can do this.’ He drives people. Chris doesn’t allow his physical limitation to get in the way of his overall performance.” Christopher sets a (quiet) example of what an athlete should stand for and how they should compete—with character and sportsmanship. And that’s exactly why we agree with everyone else: You’ll be seeing him at the Paralympics. “But not when I turn 16,” Christopher says. “I will probably wait until the 2020 games in Tokyo.” After all, he’s got favorite classes to attend.

ndoor cycling is definitely not for the weak of heart or spirit. Instructors motivate you with positive reinforcement – or maybe a little bantering – and the fast-paced atmosphere really gets the endorphins flowing. With spin class boutiques popping up around the country, it’s safe to say: spin is in. John Foley, co-founder and CEO of Peloton, developed a cycle and fitness class wrapped up in one 2’ by 4’ package: the Peloton, a high-tech stationary bike. But according to Foley, it’s not just the cycle that makes his concept unique; it’s what you get with the $39/month subscription: access to live and on-demand spin classes. It’s a customizable concept created to fit your schedule. The cycle’s 21.5” full HD 1080p touchscreen connects you via Wi-Fi to the Peloton content and user network. Linking you to live spin classes (more than 10 offered daily) and an on-demand library of more than 1,500 classes, the Peloton is more than just an at-home spin cycle. The in-class experience allows you to see your live performance metrics so you can track your cadence, resistance, heart rate and calories burned. Not only do you have the pleasure of patting yourself on the back

for a job well done, but the instructors on the other side of the screen can see your numbers, as well. And with the 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, they can also see every last bead of sweat on your face. Consider it inspiration to keep pushing hard. Touchscreen aside, the Peloton cycle is built to be sturdy, compact and customizable. With a carbon steel-constructed frame, this bike can withstand any spin class you can withstand. The Peloton seat has a depressed ergonomic center and is adjustable in two dimensions. The LOOK Delta compatible pedals clip in to a variety of cycling shoes. And the adjustable, padded handlebars are able to give support in all positions of your ride. The inner workings of the machine include a near-silent belt drive that is low maintenance—no need to stock up on chain oil—and a smooth magnetic resistance system that allows for a natural incline. There’s also a bit of social networking that comes with the Peloton system. You can compete with other users and unlock achievements in your workout efforts. Not to mention there’s a global leaderboard that sparks spin class stat envy. If you want to be at the center of the spin fitness movement, hop on and hold on.

GOOD EATS

Are you resolving to eat better in 2016? We spotlight a few of our favorite healthy foods to fuel your New Year.

D

iet or delicious? Why choose? A new year offers a new reason to start fresh — and in many cases, provides a reminder to rethink what goes into our bodies. Whether you’re

hoping to lose a few pounds, gain a bit more energy or simply crave something different, we’ve rounded up our top picks for healthy food choices you don’t have to drive far to find. Say bye-bye to bland and boring; these eats are as satisfying for the taste buds as they are for the tummy.

REFRESHING SMOOTHIES AND JUICES Coffee breaks are nice, but sometimes an energizing smoothie or juice is just what you need to power through the day. And Pure Café in Southlake Town Square is the perfect stop, offering a great alternative to sweet snacks and caffeine-laden beverages. The local smoothie and juice bar serves up everything from wraps to salads, but it’s the fresh-squeezed juices, juice cleanses and smoothies we can’t get enough of. Pure Café Owner Carolyn Darretta says that while healthy foods still have a stigma for some, more and more people are warming up to the idea. “Healthy can still taste good,” Darretta says. She suggests starting off the New Year right by trading in your usual morning routine for the natural energizer of raw juice, many of which are blended to ward off some of the season’s common illnesses. “Most juices are designed to fight against something, and you can add ingredients based on your needs. For example, ginger fights against colds and coughs,” she says. For more area juicing options, try one of Nekter Juice Bar’s daily juice cleanses that pack 10-12 pounds of fruits and vegetables inside … much more than you could possibly eat. Or at least want to eat.

HEARTY SALADS Who says salads should leave you feeling hungry? At Modern Market, you’ll find indulgently filling salad options in both entrée and half sizes depending on your appetite, and the menu is far from rabbit food. Choose from full-size offerings that range from 569 to 832 calories, including creative pairings such as the Thai Coconut Salad featuring mixed greens topped with roasted chicken, grated coconut, cucumber, roasted sweet potato and peanut mango dressing. And rest assured it will be fresh, as the restaurant prides itself on made-from-scratch food that’s only crafted with simple, seasonal ingredients. So while the menu fluctuates with what’s in season, the flavor is always predictably delicious. JAN 16 • 41

Prefer to build your own salad? Try Snappy Salads, the brainchild of Chris Dahlander. Boasting a tagline of, “So Good, Even Guys Like Our Salads,” the growing chain lives up to its name with Create Your Own options that allow you to mix-and-match lettuce with up to eight ingredients. “Guests can create their own salad ingredients that meet their dietary needs and have them dressed with house-made dressings to accomplish their health goals,” Dahlander says. “A salad a day keeps the doctor away.” Snappy Salads also offers an expansive list of suggested options if you’d rather leave the mixing up to the pros. Dahlander’s personal favorite? The BAM*BAM, an irresistible blend of baby spinach, baby arugula, artisan mix, red cabbage, quinoa, red onion, pulled chicken, dried cherries, chopped almonds and house-made Sweet Parsley dressing that started as a featured salad and quickly became a main-menu staple. “I created this salad with super foods in mind,” Dahlander says. “Super foods are items that pack a powerful punch (like the little kid on The Flintstones) of antioxidants, minerals and other beneficial nutrients.” It’s so yummy, you’ll forget you’re also eating healthy.

FAST AND FRESH Too busy to focus on nutrition? Nice try. Places like My Fit Foods and Simply Fit Meals make it easy to stay healthy, even during your most hectic of days, with chef-inspired meals you can take on the run. Focusing on fresh, simple and flavorful ingredients, the Texas-born companies were both founded on the principle of quick eats that defy the traditional fast-food model. The cuisine at both fuels you up and fills you up — no oil-doused French fries here. Instead, you’ll find fresh, ready-made meals that you can refrigerate until you’re ready to eat them, with plenty of options to keep you from even thinking about pulling up to that drive-through window. There are even items you wouldn’t expect to find on a health-food menu – think Crispy Chicken Tenders breaded with rice flour for a low-fat twist, or our morning favorite, Breakfast Tacos. For those who prefer the dine-in experience, Zoës Kitchen offers a healthful option with a Mediterranean approach. Here you’ll enjoy a fast-casual dining experience, based on the Greek traditions and heritage of its founder who believes food should taste as good as it is good for you. The menu features an eclectic range of pita sandwiches, kabobs and even family-style meals to serve up to six hungry mouths. Maybe this whole eating-right thing isn’t so hard after all.

DELICIOUS & NUTRITIOUS RESTAURANTS When winter’s chill blows through Texas, sometimes the only thing that will satisfy is a warm meal. But you don’t have to stay at home to stay healthy or divert from your goals to enjoy a night out with friends. Many restaurants, like Trio New American Café, are putting their focus on locally sourced ingredients and seasonally inspired dishes that are as good for the taste buds as they are for the waistline. Led by Executive Chef and Owner Jason Harper, the Colleyville restaurant is all about making it a point to know where your food comes from, sourcing menu items locally as often as possible, while changing their menu four times per year to align with the seasons. “How your food is raised matters,” Harper explains when sharing his restaurant’s philosophy. “Our proteins and meats are pasture-raised here in Texas, on small-range pastures where they live the life they’re supposed to live.” The result is not only more nutrient rich, but also better tasting. Another restaurant putting a focus on quality food amid a comfortable atmosphere is TruFire Kitchen & Bar in Southlake Town Square. Here you’ll find a passion for fresh in everything on the menu, from handcrafted drinks made with muddled fruits and house-prepared sours to carefully selected dishes aligned with the flavors of the season, like the Naked Avocado Salad. Cutting out gluten? TruFire serves up an impressive list of gluten-free items, from Hummus made from fire-roasted bell peppers and served alongside pita bread to specialty items like Pan-Roasted Sockeye Salmon with a mustard dill glaze. Its popular pasta dishes can also be created with 100-percent whole-wheat pasta upon request for a healthier spin on a comfort food classic.

WHEN CALORIES COUNT It’s too difficult to track your calories when dining out, right? Not if you find restaurants dedicated to helping you follow your plan. Corner Bakery Café makes it simple to hit your targeted calorie count while still being flexible, with a build-your-own Corner Combo that truly lets you diet your way. Choose from more than 100

HOLISTIC AND INTEGRATED MEDICINE

Life’s Medicine was born out of a genuine passion for helping people. The clinic offers an integrated and holistic approach to diagnosing and treating conditions such as high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian disease, insulin resistance, diabetes, depression and insomnia, among others. Founder, Dr. Isabel Lopez, takes each patient and their concerns into account, collaborating with them in decisions to treat based not solely on lab results, but on a variety of factors, including how the patient actually feels. Dr. Lopez’ philosophy for patient care is to help them live their life to its fullest. Her mission and true passion is to improve the quality of life for all of her patients. She and her staff take all things into account and develop a protocol that will allow patients to wake up energized, maintain a healthy weight and hormone balance, and develop good sleep hygiene. By not contracting with insurance companies, Life’s Medicine has the freedom to practice medicine holistically, use cutting edge therapies, and treat each patient individually while catering to their specific needs.

Founder, Dr. Isabel Lopez

“Good sleep hygiene is key when it comes to weight loss, hormone balance and a sense of well being.”

Life’s Medicine offers many services that will help its patients look better, feel better and play better, including: Whole Body Cryotherapy is the exposure of a person’s skin to extremely cold air for a short period of time (two to three minutes), which causes a healing reaction in the body. The possibilities of what cryotherapy can do for patients are endless, but it is known to improve the skin, endocrine, musculoskeletal and immune systems. Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna is an effective tool for natural healing and prevention. Infrared light has the ability to penetrate human tissue, which in turn produces a host of anti-aging benefits. It has been proven through studies to also reduce blood pressure, cause weight loss, and detox from heavy metals. Power Plate is an amazing piece of equipment that oscillates in several directions while one stands on it performing designated exercises. It can reduce cellulite, muscle soreness and tension. Slim Shots and Energy Shots are given weekly and contain a combination of B vitamins, fat-burning amino acids, vitamin C and 1,000 milligrams of a very potent antioxidant called Glutathion. Ultraviolet Light Photo Oxidation is a one hour intravenous therapy that exposes the blood to different wavelengths of light. This triggers distinct biological mechanisms to yield increased oxygenation and improved circulation, pathogen reduction and immune modulation causing reduction in inflammation and improved ATP synthesis. The benefits continue even after the treatment is completed. This is cutting edge medicine. Normatech Compression Therapy is sequential compression therapy for arms, legs, glutes and hip flexors. Compression therapy helps athletes recover faster after an intense workout. It can also help with fluid retention and injury recovery. Dr. Lopez is a board certified family practice physician and has focused her medical career on common endocrine and medical conditions as well as weight loss. She completed her residency at John Peter Smith and is Board Certified in Family Practice, and is a member of the American Academy of AntiAging Medicine. Dr. Lopez has been trained extensively in bio-identical hormone replacement. She is also pursuing certification in Functional Medicine.

The physicians on staff at Spine Team Texas know that neck and back pain should not be something an individual has to live with. As a spine-specialized center, Spine Team Texas encourages patients with pain lasting more than two weeks to visit a healthcare professional at their facility. Spine Team Texas has remained dedicated to their treatment philosophy for more than 11 years. Their philosophy is that spine care should be conservative whenever possible, reserving surgery for patients that fail to get extended spine pain relief or when medically necessary. The team of spine specialists offers a myriad of innovative, non-surgical spine care treatments. A critical part of their team is on-site, spine-focused physical therapy. When surgery is indicated or medically necessary, they offer minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) techniques. They feel when surgery is indicated that minimally invasive spine surgery techniques should be instituted whenever possible.

Spine Team Texas has many philanthropies and oranizations they support in the community. They provide summer internships to aspiring medical profession students through the Southlake (CISD) Carroll Medical Academy. Other support includes: the American Heart Association, Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation of North Texas, Neuroassistance Foundation of North Texas, Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Texas, and Wednesday’s Child Foundation of North Texas. Spine Team Texas has been recognized in many publications and journals for their excellence in neck and back pain care, such as Becker’s Spine Review Annual Spine Leadership Award-2013 and 2015; Becker’s Spine Review “Top Spine Surgery Practices to Know”; Fort Worth, Texas magazine 2015 “Top Docs” and D Magazine 2015 “Top Docs.” In addition to their Southlake office, Spine Team Texas has offices in Fort Worth-Alliance/Bedford/Rockwall/ Richardson/Allen.

“When you have back or neck pain for more than one-two weeks, seek the advice of a spine specialist. Don’t ever be afraid to get a second opinion and find a spine specialist (either surgical or non-surgical) who is part of a true, comprehensive team of spine specialists.”

SCIENTIFIC FITNESS

SPECIAL SECTION

“Education is the most important part of health and wellness. Equip yourself with not only the best knowledge for fitness and nutrition, but with the tool of your own DNA.”

We are all different and this is mainly due to our genes. There are the differences that we all see like eyes and hair color, but then there are the differences inside, like how we metabolize nutrients or the way we deal with toxins. We all interact with the environment in our own unique way. So if our genetics interacting with our environment make us who we are, by understanding our genetic profile, we can help ourselves live a healthier life. The most scientifically accurate way to do this is through DNA testing. In each gene there are points of variation, the most common type being a single base change at a particular position, which is called a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism, or SNP (pronounced SNIP). It is the collection of these small differences that affect who we are and define our individuality. At Fitnetics, they test 45 genetic markers in order to provide a full guide of fitness and nutritional advice to each individual. There is currently no other competitor in the market that has the capability to test that many SNPs.

IT’S A GIRL THING SASO GIRLS BRINGS TOGETHER SOUTHLAKE MOMS AND DAUGHTERS FOR THE GREATER GOOD. If giving back ranks high on your resolutions for the year, SASO Girls has a message for you: Join the club. Or rather, the service organization. The girls’ branch of Scholars and Athletes Serving Others (SASO) was founded in 2013 as a way for moms and daughters to volunteer their time together. The group is open to freshman through senior high school girls and their moms who reside in Southlake. As the organization gears up for its annual membership drive next month, we visited with President Heather Mollere and Vice President Elsa Kackley to learn more about the SASO Girls family. Q: You’re both members of the founding Board for SASO Girls. What have the first couple of years been like? A: They’ve been very rewarding. SASO Girls started with 12 women determined to create philanthropic opportunities for high school girls in Carroll ISD. We started with 60 pairs of moms and daughters three years ago, and now we have 163 pairs. SASO has had such great success because of the mothers and daughters who so generously give their time together. Q: How are philanthropy events determined? A: The SASO Board meets at the beginning of the SASO membership year, which runs April to March. The Board reviews events from the previous year and new opportunities available to our members. We want to make sure our members have the opportunity to work with and learn about different organizations. Q: Is there an event that stood out to you as particularly meaningful? A: Kackley says: The Red Bag Food Drive is an event that really warms my heart. It’s a joint service project between Christmas is for Children and Altrusa DFW. This event starts with a red bag rollup event at which we roll up 6,000 bags filled with non-perishable food items. We then help organize, pack into baskets and load onto trucks. This particular event strengthens our community and breaks down barriers of misunderstanding. People all around us fall on hard times, and it is important to not ever judge those struggling. Q: What kind of impact has SASO Girls had on the community? A: We’ve served more than 17 organizations, raised more than $43,000 and donated countless hours. We’ve served more than 17 organizations, raised more than $43,000 and donated countless hours.

Q: How can interested students and their moms join SASO Girls? A: Mothers and daughters can join SASO during our membership drive. We have an annual meeting in February. Applications and dues will be accepted at the meeting and for the following couple of weeks. The new membership year begins in April. We keep membership and philanthropic information on our website: SASONow.org. Q: What have you enjoyed about serving? A: Mollere says: I volunteer because it continuously teaches me something new about people, about cooperation, about compassion and about myself. Sharing these events with my girls has been so rewarding. In helping others, we are reminded that we are all in this together and we need to remember to support each other. Life has so much to offer if we look beyond ourselves. Q: Do you feel like the organization is accomplishing what it set out to do? A: Yes – and more. SASO Girls is all-inclusive and service-based, not hours-based. This helps our members recognize that time is something we can all give. Young ladies in our group say that they find it incredibly satisfying to say they changed something in the world big or small, that they have a positive impact on the lives of others and that they enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. Q: Your annual membership drive begins in February. What would you like to say to moms and daughters who are interested in joining? A: If you like to serve, we’re the perfect organization for you. Setting Sail to Alaska WHEN AND WHERE TO GO

C

ruising Alaska is an item that finds itself on many a family’s bucket list. The perfect way to tour the state’s waterways and port cities, a cruise allows you to get up close and personal with glaciers, wildlife, the Northern Lights and more. However, not knowing much about the state or its climate might put potential travelers in a vacation conundrum. Paring down your cruise options to include the best time of year to travel, where to go and what to see will put your mind at ease. While the first step is contacting a cruise line for your family adventure, it helps to know the basics. Cruise season begins in May and ends in September. However, some cruise lines will begin trips as early as April. Before you select the timing, though, it helps to know how each month’s weather conditions will affect your activities.

Best Time to Travel One of the most popular Alaskan cruise routes is through the Inside Passage, known as the panhandle. Making your way through the islands of the passage that loosely connect the largest U.S. state to the rest, you’ll see bald eagles above, whales below and glaciers all around. You’ll be able to create lasting family memories that can only be made while cruising. The many ports of call along the passage are only accessible by air and by sea. Cruising through the Inside Passage in April and May means you’ll be visiting during a drier month, and it’s a great time to see the state’s

finest displays of wildflowers and foliage. It’s usually not until summer (June, July and August) that you’ll begin to catch sight of the wildlife. Land mammals such as bears, bison and moose inhabit the mountains and forests. But if whale watching is what your Alaskan cruise dreams are made of, during the warmer summer months you’re sure to see humpback and orca whales. Cruising in late fall definitely means colder temperatures and less daylight. This makes it the ideal time for catching starry nights on deck before Alaska’s cruise season concludes.

Ketchikan Wildlife and Heritage The first Alaska port of call for northbound cruise ships, Ketchikan, is a place for families to venture inland for wildlife viewing. Located 680 miles northwest of Seattle, Ketchikan is on the Inside Passage waterway in the heart of the Tongass, the country’s largest national forest. Within the massive forest are some of the most intact regions of temperate rainforest remaining in the world. That’s right—a rainforest. The Alaskan Rainforest Sanctuary is home to inhabitants that include black bears, wolves and bald eagles. Guided tours are recommended for families wishing to explore the forest. Interested in more than just plants and animals? Treat the family to a dose of culture. The heritage of the three Native groups, the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian, is celebrated and documented by the town of Ketchikan in many ways. For example, the largest collection of totem poles in the world is located in the town, including some of the oldest ones still in existence. Outside of the ones in climate-controlled seclusion and private collections, totem poles can be seen scattered throughout town and at the Totem Heritage Center.

Sitka Treasures Considered by some to be Alaska’s most beautiful seaside town, Sitka sits on the western edge of the Inside Passage midway between Ketchikan and Juneau. It is a culturally diverse town, a melting pot of Russian, American and Native ancestry. The first thing to add to your Sitka agenda is exploring the sea. Sitka is an angler’s dream come true. Salmon fishing is tops in Sitka, and the town boasts the highest saltwater sport fishing catch rate for King Salmon in Alaska. You can also join a freshwater guide—if you enjoy fly-fishing—as he or she takes you to untouched rivers and streams. It’s a great way for father and son to spend the day. Want the whole family involved? Spend the day at Sitka Sound, known for sea kayaking, ocean rafting, and diving and snorkeling.

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

Sitka’s proximity to open water on the western coast of the Inside Passage makes it a perfect venue to see the Northern Lights. While it may not be known as one of the best places to view the Aurora Borealis, you do have a good chance of catching a glimpse. In the later months of cruise season, September and early October, daylight is a commodity. The early arrival of dark skies in the evening ups your chances of stargazing aboard your cruise ship. But you might have to keep the kids up past their bedtime; the Northern Lights are more prevalent between midnight and the wee hours of the morning.

The Juneau Icefield One of the most popular ports on an Inside Passage cruise is Juneau, the state’s capital. Located north of Sitka, this city is worth taking a day excursion to see the city and visit historical locations, not to mention to eat great crab legs. However, many families add a subcategory on their bucket list, right under “taking an Alaskan cruise,” and that is cruising through icefields of glaciers as far as the eye can see. While Glacier National Park is well worth visiting, you will be able to catch other icefields located throughout the Inside Passage. Whether you are on your way to Juneau or heading to another port, you can’t miss the Juneau Icefield. The 1,500-square-mile expanse is the fifth largest icefield in North America. It contains 38 glaciers, but the most breathtaking one is the Mendenhall Glacier. Measuring 13 miles long, nearly half a mile wide and up to 1,800-feet deep, the Mendenhall is part of the Tongass National Forest.

A Classier Cookout THE DISHES AT JASPER’S PLANO ARE JUST WHAT YOU’D FIND AT A BACKYARD BARBECUE … ONLY BETTER.

We’re a long way off from grilling season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t feast on all your favorite cookout fare. Just take a jaunt over to Jasper’s Plano, an upscale grill hidden away in the Shops at Legacy. The restaurant specializes in gourmet backyard cuisine, which is exactly what it sounds like: comforting classics with a sophisticated twist. We’re not talking about the usual burgers and dogs, though; this food is elegant yet so good you’ll want seconds. Think fall-off-thebone ribs, perfectly prepared steak and more. Jasper’s serves Sunday brunch, lunch and dinner, and offers a lively happy hour scene as well. The cuisine centers around the highest quality, fresh, seasonal ingredients. When Chef Kent Rathbun developed the concept for gourmet backyard cuisine, he wanted to provide simple yet unique meals in an environment that’s both casual and upscale.

“I remember what it was like as a kid when my mom and dad were cooking. They both were really great cooks but also enjoyed high-end restaurants,” Chef Rathbun says. “When you couple good techniques with everyday food, you get something on a completely different level. It’s not just steak and ribs anymore but something special.” The James Beard nominee and Iron Chef America winner takes pride in serving up fresh twists on comforting favorites – and it seems everyone wants to get a taste. Chef Rathbun has prepared meals for such notable guests as George W. Bush, Queen Elizabeth and Oprah. “I want everything to have a level of comfort, yet for people to feel like they have dined in a sophisticated restaurant,” he says. When you step inside Jasper’s, you’ll immediately understand his vision. The ambience

is modern and appealing in every way, from the serene lighting to the elegant drapery. Though our party visited on the weekend, we could just as easily dine at Jasper’s for a business lunch or romantic dinner. With Valentine’s Day approaching next month, you might consider Jasper’s if you’re looking to wine and dine your date. The restaurant is Zagat rated as one of “Dallas’ Best Spots for Wine Pairings,” boasting an impressive wine list with plenty of interesting selections. From chardonnay to cabernet and everything in between (including champagne and more than a dozen offerings on the Captain’s Wine list), Jasper’s is ready to cater to those looking to enjoy a glass of fine wine. Once you’ve made your wine selection, we suggest starting with the restaurant’s signature appetizer: the Maytag Blue Cheese Potato Chips. Prepare for your world to be flipped upside down. The house-made chips are perfectly crunchy and warm, oozing with creamy, rich cheese. There’s nothing like them. As for the main course, we opted for the Slow Smoked Baby Back Ribs. Upon tasting the beautifully tender and juicy meat, we heartily agree with Bon Apetit that these ribs earned the accolade as one of the “Top 3 Choices for America’s Best Ribs.” They’re that good. A range of mouthwatering cast-iron sides such as Jalapeño-Charred Corn and Crispy Brussel Sprouts nicely complement the entrées. We particularly enjoyed the Mac and Cheese with aged gouda and smoked ham. The gouda wasn’t overpowering and the addition of ham gave it some exciting flavor. This is definitely comfort food taken up a notch. If you’re a regular bruncher, add Jasper’s to your rotation. Its elegant jazz brunch runs until 3 p.m. every Sunday, so you can take your time making it across town. The Pecan Waffles dish with marinated strawberries and smoked bacon is a fusion of sweet and savory. It’s as indulgent as it is filling, so come hungry. We also recommend Gramma Minnie’s Fried Chicken. It’s served with chunky Yukon potatoes and a black-pepper maple gravy that’ll have you licking your plate clean (if that sort of thing was acceptable in a fine-dining establishment). Should you spring for dessert, Jasper’s thankfully has built-in portion control. All of its desserts are minis. Our group shared a Snickerdoodle Cheesecake and Espresso-Hazelnut Ho Ho. Candied walnuts gave the cheesecake a sweet crunch, and Bailey’s Irish Cream really stood out in the cake. If you find yourself craving some cookout cuisine in the winter months ahead, you don’t have to fire up your grill. Jasper’s offers the best of backyard cooking in a swanky setting. Comfort food doesn’t get any more comforting than that.

Falafel Salad

Raise the (Salad) Bar Salata offers fresh salads just the way you like them. Who’s up for a salad? It’s a question you’ll likely pose or answer often over the next few weeks. It seems nearly everyone hops aboard the healthy-eating train this time of year. But eating right doesn’t have to lose steam as the weeks roll on – especially when there’s a brand-new salad shop in town. Salata, a Houston-based salad and salad wrap restaurant, opened its doors in Southlake last month, bringing nutritious fare and big-time options to salad seekers. Customization is what sets Salata apart. It doesn’t offer a few cookie-cutter selections on a menu; it boasts a bounty of more than 50 fresh, pure ingredients on its salad bar. Guests can choose from an array of lettuces, vegetables, fruits, cheeses, seeds, nuts, chicken, seafood and vegan proteins. It’s salad according to your exact cravings and specifications. And we’re not just talking about the usual ingredients such as cucumbers and carrots, but

deliciously uncommon toppings such as alfalfa sprouts, jicama and pumpkin seeds. You can garnish however you like; salads are priced at a flat $8 and $7 for a small. Make it a meal by adding a protein such as grilled chicken, quinoa or salmon for a small upcharge. Then take your pick of one of Salata’s 10 house-made dressings. Each one is made in small batches from hand-picked herbs, fresh-cut veggies and high-quality oils and vinegars. Fresh Herb Vinaigrette, with its subtly sweet balance of herbs and spices, is the most popular option. Salads aren’t the only thing Salata does well; the restaurant also serves freshly made soups, breads and desserts. We love pairing a salad with a warm, soothing bowl of one its house-made soups: broccoli (our favorite), tomato basil or tortilla. The restaurant even has a line of signature teas and lemonades crafted exclusively for Salata. If you usually opt for water, we suggest upgrading – if not for the refreshment, then for the experience. Beverages aren’t dispensed in typical fashion here. Instead, they’re delivered through an exclusive-to-Salata “Tea Tap” system that’s similar to a beer tap. “The healthy, refreshing drinks are stored in custom-designed containers to ensure freshness and are fed straight to the customer’s glass,” explains Mark Robbins, franchisee of the Southlake location. You can even satisfy your sweet tooth without going overboard at Salata; it serves bite-sized brownies and cookies that are baked fresh daily. Whether you’re resolving to eat better this year, or you just love a great salad, check out Salata. It’s taking the salad scene to a whole new level.

is still owned and operated by its founders, the Cole brothers — George, David, Mike and Darrell — who opened their first location in Irving. Known for its thin-crust creations famously cut into rectangular slices, the restaurant offers many signature pizzas, including the staff’s special (grilled chicken, artichoke hearts and Roma tomatoes) and the carne classico (pepperoni, Italian sausage, meatballs, Canadian bacon and hamburger). All of i Fratelli’s dough — their own recipe — is handcrafted every day, and salad dressings are also made in-house. “They use real mushrooms, not canned, and have pepperoncini peppers,” says Tracy P., a reader who cast her vote for i Fratelli. However, the restaurant’s standout feature is definitely its fast, friendly and free delivery service. Take it from us when we say we had a very pleasant experience, from the timely delivery to the drivers’ hospitable demeanors and, of course, the hot pizza we immediately devoured upon arrival.

Modern Mediterranean From kabobs and burgers to baklava and salads, Luna Grill offers an eclectic mix.

Chicken Kabob

Hummus Plate

Not sure if you’re in the mood for a gyro or a quesadilla? Luna Grill offers both – and much more on its diverse Mediterranean menu. The restaurant specializes in fresh fare ranging from falafel to gourmet salads, with most menu items made from scratch in-house daily. No pre-cooked or pre-heated kabobs here; only freshly prepared plates and sides. Nicole Abraham, Vice President of Marketing for the California-based chain, says the restaurant is “luxe casual,” a mix between fast casual and full-service. “We want people to feel welcome and happy when they dine with us,” she says. “The general vibe is fun and warm, but what sets us apart is the quality of food. We use organic, all-natural ingredients.” We love that Luna Grill has all-natural protein, free-range, vegetarian and vegan options (these classifications are noted on the menu along with calories for each item). There are even a few healthy selections for kids. But don’t think this place is strictly about clean eating; you can also crunch on some crispy fries, sip on a cold beer and indulge in a delightful dessert. That’s what makes Luna Grill so appealing – it caters to all different types of appetites. When our group dropped in for lunch, the menu served us well. We started with the Spicy Cilantro Hummus. Served with pita bread or sliced veggies (we opted for the pita bread), it was flavorful and fiery. The Lemon Chicken Soup, with tender pieces of chicken, rice, and a hint of lemon, is also a hearty appetizer, especially on a chilly day. For lunch, we enjoyed the Chicken Kabob plate, one of Luna Grill’s signature dishes. The generous portions of boneless chicken were juicy, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection. We ordered it with a side salad that consisted of mixed greens, cucumber, onion and tomato. Luna Grill also offers a handful of wraps and gourmet salads, which can be topped with chicken, falafel, gyros meat or mahi mahi to create a healthy and satisfying meal. The Apple Walnut salad, a spring mix topped with slices of fresh seasonal apple, crumbled gorgonzola, candied walnuts and dried cranberries, is especially good with mahi mahi. Beverage choices range from beer and wine to natural lemonade and organic iced tea. As for dessert, Luna Grill’s Mini Baklava is not to be missed. It’s crispy with just the right amount of sweetness. The next time you face the dilemma of where to dine for lunch or dinner, the odds are good that you’ll find something you like at Luna Grill. This restaurant is putting its own flavorful spin on fresh Mediterranean food.

ob Jones Park. Being a competitive athlete is difficult enough, but for these players, the challenge is even more incredible. That’s because these athletes aren’t just fighting for a win, they’re celebrating the freedom they’ve fought so hard for us all to enjoy. Meet the 30 extraordinary members of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball TeamTM (otherwise known as WWAST), comprised of some of America’s bravest heroes, soldiers and veterans. Their mission is to inspire and educate others, while enhancing their own health and welfare. And though each team member has sustained a heart-wrenching amount of hardship, including severe injuries resulting in amputation, they aren’t playing for sympathy cheers. No, instead these men are competing with the best of them, playing against able-bodied teams across the nation at the highest level to prove that nothing — not even the loss of a limb — can stop them. Today, their armor consists of prosthetic legs and arms, but their hearts remain as strong as ever. Come to support these proud veterans and active soldiers as they hit the softball field to play a sport they love, while showing us anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Funds raised from the tournament will be used to support education and training for Wounded Warrior amputees as they work to pursue their academic goals. Who’s up for a great game for an even greater cause? Count us in!

Toyota Stadium. Fans of FCS Football know it all leads up to this moment in Frisco. It’s the tournament that determines the overall victor of the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision — a spirited battle between independent colleges that don’t affiliate themselves with a specific conference. Come for the game but stay for the fanfare, which includes everything from live music and pep rallies to interactive games at the free fan festival known as “Tailgate Town.”

Jan. 15 MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS JANUARY 15 Winstar World Casino. Hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis may not be your typical rapper-DJ matchup, but that hasn’t stopped them from cranking out the hits. Coming together in Seattle in 2008, they first struck gold in 2013 with the No. 1 single “Thrift Shop,” following it up with hits such as “Can’t Hold Us” and “Downtown.” See the uncommon twosome in action at the Winstar World Casino, after cashing out on their many slot machines, of course.

JOHNNY MATHIS – THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR JANUARY 16

SIGHTINGS: ALEX ISRAEL THROUGH JANUARY 31 Nasher Sculpture Center. View the eccentric work of L.A.-born artist Alex Israel on display during the Nasher Sculpture Center’s latest Sightings exhibition. Known for digging beneath the surface of iconic pop references through a variety of creative projects, Israel’s newest focus presents sculptures and paintings derived from Hollywood movies, including his own teen surfing movie, SPF-18. The result is an insightful look into the blend of this idealistic world with contemporary culture.

PATTON OSWALT JANUARY 22 Majestic Theatre. When you think of a stand-up comedian, the terms “polished,” “literate” and even a bit “nerdy” probably don’t come to mind. Unless you’re talking about Patton Oswalt. The entertainer is known for being a little different than your average comedian, best known for his role as Spencer Olchin on the sitcom King of Queens. Now he’s taking his unique brand of humor on the road, making observations about everything from pop culture to social issues, while keeping us laughing along the way. FORT WORTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: A NIGHT AT THE OSCARS JANUARY 22 Bass Performance Hall. When it comes to award-winning cinematic achievements, there are two necessities: great acting and a killer soundtrack. Celebrate the second as performed by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra during its silver screen-focused show featuring musical selections from Hollywood films such as The Godfather, Pink Panther and many more. Roll out the red carpet and enjoy!
