BACKGROUND TO SUDS The problems associated with the failings of conventional stormwater drainage systems have become painfully evident with the increasingly regular occurrence of major flood events. This has been further exacerbated by on-going development and climatic changes. As a consequence the recent European Water Framework Directive requires that we must manage our water resources in a more sustainable way and provide an enhanced level of protection to water quality. This requirement has necessitated a fundamental change in the overall approach to drainage design with the primary aim of replicating natural processes. This can be achieved by the use of a sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) which endeavour to mimic the natural movement of stormwater from a development, reducing flood risk, enhancing water quality and providing an improved environment. The benefits of SUDS in terms of minimizing flood risk are recognized by the UK government in PPG25 (Planning Policy Guidance Note – Development & Flood Risk) which promotes the use of SUDS on all new development.

Source control Source control is the preferred option in any SUDS scheme and includes techniques such as the ProctorPave Porous pavement system which, is available in either grass or gravel finished surface which can be used as a “stand alone “ solution or in conjunction with: • • • • •

Filter strips Swales Detention Ponds Retention Ponds Constructed Wetlands

To treat stormwater at source whilst making use of natural processes to remove and break down pollutants from surface water runoff and provide the opportunity to improve wildlife habitat and create attractive amenity features.

Technical support The A. Proctor Group specialise in the provision of bespoke package solutions based upon the use of quality assured validated components and can offer a project specific, cost effective solution to your stormwater management requirements.

PROCTORPAVE GRAVEL ProctorPave (Gravel) porous paving allows you to park, drive and walk on a beautiful decorative gravel surface. ProctorPave (Gravel) is a structure which provides heavy load bearing support and true containment of gravel to create a porous pavement surface with unlimited traffic volume and/or duration time for parking. When used with a porous base course material (MOT type 3), ProctorPave 2 can provide a void space of 35% for storage volume of rainfall during rain events. For example, a 200mm deep cross-section can store around 50mm of rain. Although bacteria concentrations are lower than with ProctorPave (Grass), polluted runoff and vehicle drippings are consumed prior to reaching the water table.

Benefits of ProctorPave (Gravel) Porous Pavement: •

Pervious Load Bearing Surface – Unlimited Traffic

Stormwater Pollution Filtration and Treatment

Heat Energy Reflection Reduction, “Cool” Surface

Tree Growth within Parking Areas (reduction in CO2)

Competitive Advantage over other Plastic Porous Pavements Products ProctorPave Gravel

Alternatives products

Supplied in patented 20m2 rolls for fast installation 200 – 300m2 per hour (based on two men).

Supplied in blocks which require pinning together. Typical installation 20 – 60m2 per hour.

Flexible grid system which conform to undulating terrain and alleviates freeze thaw and lifting.

Rigid blocks which require prepared level base.

Rolls cut and shaped with pruning shears.

Blocks require cutting with handsaws and difficult to shape.

Aesthetically pleasing and virtually invisible on completion.

Product visible on completion.

Supplied with filter fabric bonded to rings.

Requires separate filter fabric to be laid, thus increased installation time.

25mm thick so less gravel required to fill. Can be used on slopes, just add 7% cement to gravel to hold gravel in place.

>50mm thick more gravel to fill system. No data available.

PROCTORPAVE GRASS ProctorPave (Grass) porous paving system allows you to park, drive, and walk on a beautiful grass surface. It performs the functions of asphalt or concrete pavement, but with the aesthetics of a lawn – all while enhancing the environment. ProctorPave provides incredible load bearing strength while protecting vegetation root systems from deadly compaction. High void spaces within the entire cross-section enable excellent root development, and storage capacity for rainfall from storm events. Stormwater is slowed in movement through and across the surfaces, which deposits suspended sediment and increases time to discharge. Suspended pollutants and moderate amounts of engine oils are consumed by active soil bacteria, which are aided by the system’s excellent oxygen exchange capacity.

Benefits of the ProctorPave (Grass) porous paving system: •

Pervious Load Bearing Surface

Stormwater Pollution Filtration and Treatment

Airborne Dust Capture and Retention

Heat Energy Reflection Reduction, “Cool” Surface

Tree Growth within Parking Areas (reduction in CO2)
