In PX1’s first season this year, there were five quarterbacks taken in the first round. Each one of them still starts for the team that originally drafted them. They all have had some success even if that success varies among each of these young arms. They represent the next generation of quarterbacks in this league. The five men are Eric Hill of the Denver Broncos, Max Jeter of the Chicago Bears, Daniel Adams of the Philadelphia Eagles, Aerion Hunter of the San Diego Chargers, and Brady Washington of the St. Louis Rams. Eric Hill was the number one pick in the opening draft for a Denver team that stumbled through their first season. He was everything you could want out of a first pick. Little to no risk and a great arm. A three-year starter out of Ohio State who got the job when the original first string quarterback went down in his freshman year. He was compared to someone like Aaron Rodgers in today’s NFL. Hill's first year was a great success proving to be one of the

best QB prospects in years. Then in season 2 he tore his ACL in week 3. Season 3 he came back strong. He was leading his team to the playoffs and possibly the AFC West title. Then, on a late hit in Carolina, he broke his collarbone. Now he goes down for the season again this year with a torn groin. He has all the potential, but he can’t seem to stay on the field. Jeter is currently competing for his 2nd MVP this year. His stat line has improved every year since he was drafted. The Bears have been the pinnacle of NFC competition with him under center. He has yet to win a Super Bowl, but everyone knows that one day he will get another chance. Jeter has been struggling this year though. He was benched in Chicago’s last game against the Eagles and is not on the same pace that he set in previous years. The Bears and 3-3 for the first time since he was draft-

ed. Whether or not the they can turn it around this season, there is no denying that Jeter is still one of the best quarterback prospects to come out of the season one draft. Our next quarterback is Daniel Adams. The first one to drop out of the top 10. He has been a fairly strong quarterback in one of the weaker divisions, but it wasn’t until this year that he really started to understand the offense. Under new ownership, the Eagles and Adams are showing new life. The former FSU quarterback is starting to mature under the right system. Our prediction is that we see him in the Super Bowl in the next 3 years if this trend keeps up. Let’s hope for Philly’s sake it does. Aerion Hunter wasn’t even supposed to be a first round pick. He played at UMass for his whole college career. Many people were worried that he wasn’t worth an early pick. Well the Chargers took the chance and it paid off. Hunter has become one of the better quarterbacks in the league. He always seems to be in the shadows though, no matter what he does. He was 4th off

the board for quarterbacks and overlooked by most teams. Hunter plays great and on a good team, but he is in the AFC West, one of the most competitive divisions. Aerion needs to prove he is better than the competition and prove the doubters wrong. Shouldn’t be too hard, the man from Mass. has been doing it his whole career. With the 23rd pick in the NFL draft the St. Louis Rams select... Brady Washington. The 5th best quarterback does not inspire visions of Kurt Warner. He wasn't even the best quarterback from his own conference. He isn’t really a leader to the team, but the man can play. He is the franchise quarterback just not the one you expect. He will win games and lose them depending on the day. He doesn’t need to be a leader though. If Washington can keep throwing well and the team comes together around him, expect big things from Washington. Most of the league would love to have him as their QB. One good year of success from the Washington and the Rams and the city of St. Louis will love him like their own.

ohnny Manziel was the ultimate boom or bust draft prospect. He saw his first real action in 2015. That season Manziel finished with a QB rating of 92.7, 3,518 yards, 65%, and 28 TD. But he had 23 interceptions and the Browns didn’t make the playoffs. After a good off-season, everyone expected the Browns to be in the playoffs in 2016. The Browns had added two major pieces on offense in free agency and looked poised for contention. With 144 fewer pass attempts, Manziel posted what is still the best QB rating of his career (101.7). He threw 13 less interceptions (10 total) while throwing for 2,344 yards and 20 TD’s. Once again it was not good enough for the Browns to make the playoffs. By the 2017 season the Browns fans were starting to get restless. The Browns

yet to even make the playoffs. The 2017 season didn’t get off to a good start as they lost to the Steelers in week one and Johnny managed only 140 yards, zero TD's and one interception. Johnny had another bad game in week four and the Browns lost to the Bears. Then came disaster in week five where Manziel had zero TD's, 3 interceptions and only 131 yards in a loss to the Vikings. Cleveland was 2-3 and looking like they would miss the playoffs once again and the Super Bowl seemed like a distant fantasy. Then two huge trades went down. The Packers, who had depth at QB, traded Brett Hundley to the Browns for a third-round pick. Then, what once seemed unthinkable happened. The owner’s favorite and hand-picked QB was traded away to the Redskins for a second-round pick. It was a move that made sense for the Washington as they were rebuilding after just buying the team and their QB situation they had was the worst in the NFL.

Cleveland would go on to win eightof-nine games and made it to the second round of the playoffs even though Hundley would be injured and miss the playoffs. Despite not playing the full year, Hundley finished with 2,170 yards, 24 TD and 16 interceptions. The Browns would then go on to win the Super Bowl the following year behind Hundley and CJ Anderson, finally bringing a title to the fans in Cleveland. Meanwhile, in Washington, Manziel was looking to turn his career around. Johnny’s first year-and-a- half in D.C. weren’t the best as he threw for 9 more Interceptions than TD's and the Redskins did not make the playoffs. However, the Redskins rewarded him with a big sixyear, $51 million dollar contract with a whopping $15 million signing bonus. Washington followed that up by taking a QB in the 2nd round of the draft by the name of Brenden Boyd. Boyd was projected to go in the first round and had everything you look for in a QB size, speed, arm strength, and even accuracy. There was now a QB battle in

Manziel posted a career record of 20-17 in Cleveland and is currently 15-19 in Washinton and 35-36 overall

Washington and Johnny’s time as a starting quarterback was in jeopardy. Johnny won the starting job in the preseason and the Redskins are currently 4-2 with two big wins against the Bears and Cowboys. Johnny is having a great year with a QB rating over 100 and 917 yards, 9 TD, 3 interceptions and a 62 % completion percentage. His QB rating is in the top 10 in the NFL. He did miss some time with injury this year and in that time the rookie Boyd has also played well. Were the Browns “cursed” by Johnny and did dealing him away remove the hex allowing them to win the Super Bowl? Can Johnny finally put together a full season and lead the Redskins to the playoffs? Maybe even a Super Bowl? Only time will tell. However, the one thing that is certain is that both teams and their respective QB's are happy the way everything has turned out.
