Pentecost 2016

WELCOME TO THE WILDERNESS PENTECOST 2016

From the treatise On the Holy Spirit by Basil the Great

Is there anyone who, on hearing the various titles of the Holy Spirit, does not experience a certain exaltation as their mind contemplates that supreme nature? For it is called the ‘Spirit of God’, ‘the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father’, the 'right Spirit', the guiding Spirit’. But the chief and distinctive title is simply 'Holy Spirit', which is appropriate for that which is without material body and cannot be divided. Our Lord when teaching the Samaritan woman at the well who thought God to be merely an object of local worship, said that ‘God is Spirit’; in other words that God is without material body and unable to be comprehended. If we consider this statement, it precludes any idea of a circumscribed nature, subject to change and chance, or anything resembling a creature. On the contrary, we are compelled to push the categories of our thinking to the limit, and to conceive of the Spirit in terms of an intelligent essence, of infinite power, of unlimited greatness, traversing all times and ages. The Spirit is generous in bestowing gifts; and in response, every creature turns to the Spirit to be made holy. Those who are concerned to live virtuously reach out to the Spirit, and by the breath of the Spirit’s inspiration, are enabled to travel toward their natural and proper end. Through the Spirit’s aid hearts are raised on high, the weak are led by the hand, and those who are reaching forward in life are led on to perfection. As when a ray of light touches a polished and shining surface, and the object becomes even more brilliant, so too souls that are enlightened by the Spirit become spiritual themselves and reflect their grace to others. The grace of the Holy Spirit enables them to foresee the shape of the future, to penetrate mysteries, to discern the meaning of obscure realities, to receive spiritual blessings, to focus their minds on their heavenly citizenship, and to dance with the angels. Thus is their joy unending and their perseverance in God unfailing. Thus do they become like God, and most wonderful of all, thus do they themselves become divine.

REFLECTION After the Reflection, there is silence.

AFFIRMATION

OF

FAITH

All stand. All say:

You, O God, are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You, O God, are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure. You came to us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved your love for us in Jesus Christ, who lived and died and rose again. You are with us now. You, O God, are Holy Spirit. You empower us to be your gospel in the world. You reconcile and heal; you overcome death. You are our God. We worship you. Amen.

THE PRAYERS

OF THE

PEOPLE

During this extended time of prayer you are invited to leave your seat and journey to the various prayer stations that are set around the Cathedral, as introduced by the presider. You may also light a candle near the altar, as a way of offering prayer for specific cares and concerns – for personal prayers, for the needs of the Church, or the world, for those who are suffering from illness, addiction, or any kind of need, or for those who have died. At the end of the Prayers, the Presider says

All say:

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in faith so that we overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(Romans 15:13)

Let us give thanks to the God of our salvation. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The Presider continues Presider:

People:

Eternal God we praise you for your glory. We praise you that in Jesus, now risen and glorified, you offer us fullness of life beyond our imagining: Raise us to life with him.

People:

We praise you for the Spirit’s disturbing presence, urging us on to explore the riches of your love: Open our hearts to your transforming power. Open us up to your glory, as with angels and archangels, and all who have responded to your call, we praise you, singing:

Presider:

Blessed indeed, O God of Grace is your Son, Jesus the Messiah, the Christ. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Presider: People:

Flame-dancing Spirit come: Make this bread and wine the Body and Blood of Christ our Savior.

Presider: People:

Surprise us with your rhythms: Dare us to try new steps, explore new patterns and new relationships.

Presider: People:

Release us from old routines: To swing in abandoned joy and fearful adventure.

Presider: People:

And in the intervals: Give us rest in your still center. Amen.

Silence. Presider: All say:

Let us pray for the coming of God's kingdom in the words our Savior taught us. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Page 6

OF THE

BREAD

The presider breaks the bread and observes a moment of silence.

Gluten-free bread is available by alerting the priest. If you wish to receive a blessing instead of Holy Communion, please signify by crossing your hands over your chest.
