Christian Ethics for the Modern Church with the Reverend Amy Newell-Large and Dr. Ron Large

Saint John’s Cathedral is a house of prayer for the Episcopal Church in Colorado and the people of metropolitan Denver. Through the union of Word, Sacrament, and music, we share God’s unconditional love and Episcopal community with all who enter our doors. Our beliefs about God, meaning, and love are best experienced in the ancient liturgies we pray and sing week in and week out. Join our growing and diverse community as we strive to follow Jesus Christ in faithful and creative ways.

Canon Katie’s Bible Study

January 17, February 21, & March 21

10 am in the cathedral library or 5 pm on Zoom

At Saint John’s, we have a shared hunger for meaning, learning, and connection. Christian Formation includes journeying together through faith and doubt, engaging in scripture, sharing our stories, and exploring what it means to follow Christ in a world that needs the good news of God’s love.

Catechumenate

The Catechumenate is a community of learning, conversation, and fellowship in a gathering as old as Christianity itself. It is the journey to baptism, confirmation, reception into the Episcopal Church, or the reaffirmation of baptismal vows.

Participation in the Catechumenate is also a wonderful way to learn more about Saint John’s as a cathedral and a community and to prepare for membership in the church.

Due to the shortened nature of each class, please only register if you can be present at all four sessions with the clergy. More information and the links to register are at sjcathedral.org/catechumenate.

Catechumenate with Canon Katie

Sundays, January 8, 15, 22, and February 5 in the Common Room at 1 pm

Catechumenate with the Reverend Amy Tuesdays, March 7, 14, 21, 28 on Zoom at 6 pm

Canon Katie’s Bible Study will explore the traditionally named matriarchs of Genesis: Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah. We will also discuss some of the “lesser matriarchs” and consider the contributions of all to our life of faith. Contact Canon Katie at katie@sjcathedral.org for more information. All who identify as women are welcome.

The Everding Lecture

with Dr. Jasmine Zine

Sunday, April 23 at 9:15 am and Wednesday, April 26 at 6 pm

Dr. Zine is a professor of Sociology with a specialization in Muslim studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. She is a renowned author and speaker on issues of education and social justice, youth and women, and Islamophobia and anti-Muslim racism and is currently working on a book arising from her research on the impact of the War on Terror for Muslim youth. Dr. Zine will speak on these issues in the Dean’s Forum April 23.

On April 26, Dr. Zine will be in conversation with Dean Richard about wisdom in the Bible and in the Quran. The concept of wisdom in these texts serves as a bridge between Christians and Muslims, and this conversation will explore how wisdom writing can bring us together in a world faced with violence and division.

Steps on the Journey

with the Reverend Amy Wednesdays, February 8 & February 15 7 pm in Dagwell Hall

Prayer is an important part of the lifelong spiritual journey. These two weeks will offer a basic guided prayer practice and time for discussion. The Reverend Amy will lead practices that focus on body, breath, and mind during prayer. If you have never had a prayer practice or if you have a strong regular practice, all are encouraged to come so that we may be together in prayer and learn from one another.

Awakening: the Heart of Prayer with

Bishop Rob O’Neill

Wednesdays, March 1 through March 22 7 pm in Dagwell Hall

For over two thousand years, followers of Jesus have recognized that the insight, wisdom, and compassion needed to become instruments of peace, healing, and transformation is realized only when rooted and grounded in the practice of prayer.

But what is prayer, really, and how does the practice of prayer lead us into more loving and courageous action in the world?

Together we will explore these questions, expand our understanding of prayer, develop or deepen our prayer practices, and in turn, experience a dynamic intimacy with divine Love that is the heart of the Christian faith.
