SPECIAL TENTH ANNIVERSARY GUIDE 2019

I have been fortunate to be a part of FestivalSouth® since its inception. Though I have been involved in many facets of the event, it has been my distinct privilege to serve as artistic director for the past five years. Building on the incredible strengths of our community, FestivalSouth has become synonymous with excellence in the arts, offering programming and representing the wealth of talent we enjoy as a community. None of this would be possible without the countless hours of our coordinators and “friends of the festival.” Long before the festival recruited them, they have been tireless champions of the arts in our community and continue to work to engage, educate, and enrich our neighbors who hail from around the corner and around the globe. Our celebration of this tenth anniversary is also a result of the generous support of our community. From sponsors and donors to individuals who return year after year and not only bring with them an excitement and engagement that goes beyond hearing a concert or seeing a show, but also a genuine commitment to better our community through the arts. It is my genuine desire that you join this community of artists of all kinds and make a stand by pledging your visible and vocal support not only to FestivalSouth, but also to the idea that the arts can change a community. We can take all of the good that has been done and spin it into even greater opportunities for generations to come. So, join us - in word and in deed. Mark your calendars and invite your friends to FestivalSouth this June. Make an investment in enriching your life, your family and friends’ experience, and your community’s well being by investing your time with us. Celebrate FestivalSouth 10! Create memories that will last a lifetime!

Mike Lopinto FestivalSouth Artistic Director

Thomas Fine Arts Auditorium at William Carey University 710 William Carey Pkwy, Hattiesburg, MS 39401 Adults $20 Children (12 and under) $5 with adult ticket purchase The FestivalSouth Orchestral Academy is one of the festival’s crowning gems, celebrating excellence in musical education for a worldwide group of talented students. This year, they present Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 5 and Mendelssohn’s marvelous violin concerto. A FestivalFavorite from several seasons ago, 18-year-old rising star and international competition winner, violin virtuoso Matthew Hakkarainen, returns to FestivalSouth for an incredible evening of music!

Known as the King of Rock and Roll, Mississippi native Elvis Presley was one of the most popular musical giants of the 20th century and one of the single most iconic figures in American popular music. During his career he won three Grammy Awards, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, was inducted into multiple music halls of fame, and still today, holds the record for being the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music. Victor Trevino Jr. is rated as one of the top Elvis Tribute Artists in the world. He performs for the world’s largest tribute show, Legends in Concert, the longest show running on the Las Vegas Strip, and performs on the Elvis Lives Tour, the only Elvis production sanctioned by Graceland. FestivalSouth is thrilled to partner with Summer Tunes again this year to present a legendary evening for our community!

Presented by

Westminster Presbyterian Church 115 N 25th Ave, Hattiesburg, MS 39401 Adults $20; Children (12 and under) $5 with adult ticket purchase Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo brings to life the global aspect of the traditional Psalm 100 text, “O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands,” by setting it in seven different languages and drawing from a wide spectrum of musical influences. Each movement combines some characteristics of its language-group’s musical culture with the composer’s own musical language. Movements include liturgical Latin, intertwined Hebrew and Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Zulu, Spanish, Song of the Earth (untexted), and a closing movement combining several of these languages with English. FestivalSouth is pleased to host our sister project of the Hattiesburg Concert Association in celebration of our 10th Anniversary.

Elvis Double Feature: Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas, one of Elvis Presley’s most popular movies, finds Elvis as a race-car driver competing in the Las Vegas Grand Prix opposite his principal rival, Cesare Danova. To finance his entry, Elvis takes a job as a casino waiter. Naturally, he is occasionally prevailed upon to sing. As always, Elvis chases all the wrong girls, only to ignore the “right” one, portrayed by Ann-Margret in her prime. Rated PG

MONDAY 17 JUNE 2019 6:45 p.m.

The Last Waltz

What is a film expo?

Each year, FSFX invites film makers from around the world to submit their films for a juried competition and compete for recognition and cash prizes. The festival gives audiences the chance not only to view a variety of independent films, but also to cast their votes in several categories for awards that will be presented as part of the FSFX Awards and Wrap Concert on June 20. In addition to competition features and shorts, FSFX celebrates “Music in the Movies,” showcasing the influence of Mississippi talents like Elvis, our great blues artists, and others and their contributions to the world of cinema.

Martin Scorsese chronicles the most legendary night in rock history, as an unparalleled lineup of rock superstars, including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison, take the stage for “The Band’s” 1976 farewell concert. Rated PG

9 p.m.

Purple Rain

The iconic Prince plays “The Kid,” a Minneapolis musician on the rise with his band, escaping a tumultuous home life through music. While trying to avoid making the same mistakes as his father, the Kid navigates the club scene and a rocky relationship with singer, Apollonia. But, another musician, Morris, looks to steal the Kid’s spotlight - and his girl. Featuring a slew of classic songs, including the title track and “When Doves Cry”, it’s a guilty pleasure not to be missed! Rated R

The Dark Crystal with Live Orchestration

Advance tickets recommended New York-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, conductor, and producer, Clifton Hyde, takes audience members on a live sonic journey, accompanying the visuals of Jim Henson’s classic, The Dark Crystal, a FestivalFavorite from the Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration in 2017. The mystical film takes place on another planet in the distant past, where a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of a magical crystal, the only hope to restore order to his world. Rated PG.

9:40 p.m.

This is Spinal Tap

The cult classic is a spoof about a filmmaker making a documentary about a once-famous, now almost forgotten British heavy metal band returning to the United States after 17 years for a concert tour. Directed and co-written by Rob Reiner, it stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer and features a stand-out, satirical soundtrack. Rated R

All That Jazz – Jazz Dance Class

Feel free to don your best Fosse dance wear! Class is free with movie ticket to All That Jazz.

8 p.m.

All That Jazz

“It’s showtime!” Director/choreographer Bob Fosse takes a Felliniesque look at the life of a driven entertainer. Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is the ultimate work (and pleasure)-aholic, as he knocks back a daily dose of amphetamines to juggle a new Broadway production while editing his new movie. The film shows the stiff price that entertaining exacts on entertainers. Rated R

Almost Famous

Writer and director Cameron Crowe’s experiences as a teenage rock journalist for Rolling Stone inspired this coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy hitting the road with an up-and-coming rock band in the1970s. Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand) is a loving, but strict single parent whose distrust of rock music and fears about drug use have helped to drive a wedge between herself and her children, Anita (Zooey Deschanel) and William (Patrick Fugit). William’s album reviews for a newspaper attracts the attention of renegade rock magazine editor, Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who takes William under his wing and gives him his first professional writing assignment. Eventually, Williams joins Stillwater on tour, becomes friends with Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee), and becomes enamored of groupie, Penny Lane (Kate Hudson).Almost Famous’ original score was composed by Nancy Wilson of Heart. Rated R

THURSDAY 20 JUNE 2019 6:30 p.m.

B.B. King: The Life of Riley BB King: The Life Of Riley is the much-lauded feature documentary film on the extraordinary life of Blues legend B.B. King, who worked closely with director Jon Brewer for 2 years to create this powerful film. At 88 years old, King, his family, friends and contemporaries unveil the true-life drama that was the springboard for the future ‘King of the Blues’. Battling unrelenting racism and the humiliation of segregation whilst working in the cotton fields as an orphaned child, King lived to overcome the toughest critics in the entertainment industry and ultimately be hailed as one of the kingpins of an entire genre of music. Including appearances by Aaron Neville, Bono, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Willis, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Morgan Freeman, and many, many more, this candid biopic of the life story of one of our living legends is highlighted by rare archive footage and beautifully shot scenes of the deep south. MUSIC IN THE MOVIES SERIES

WEDNESDAY 19 JUNE 2019 5 and 7:30 p.m.

Elvis Presley delivers one of his finest early performances in King Creole, playing a teenager named Danny Fisher, who is forced to drop out of school to help support his ineffective father (Dean Jagger). Drawn to trouble like a magnet, Danny is saved from a jail term by New Orleans saloon-keeper Charlie Le Grand (Paul Stewart), who gives the boy a job as a singer. It isn’t long, however, before local gang boss Maxie Fields (Walter Matthau), a shadowy figure from Danny’s criminal past, puts the muscle on the boy, insisting that Danny sing at his establishment. Together with Jailhouse Rock, King Creole is one of the best, filmed examples of the untamed, pre-army Elvis Presley. Rated PG
