Director’s Message Dear Friend, As anyone who knows us can attest, The Crucible has a truly unique and wonderful energy. Creativity is always in the air, generated by a diverse group of participants — young, old, male, female — from every walk of life. Our instructors and students reflect the vibrant “maker” spirit of West Oakland and the Bay Area itself. This catalog includes two major “clusters” of classes that generally run during the spring: • Wave 3 classes start the week of March 28 and run 5 or 10 weeks • Wave 4 classes start the week of May 23 and run 5 weeks Each wave offers an amazing selection of industrial arts and crafts classes in nearly 20 different departments, from Blacksmithing to Woodworking and everything in between — see the list on page 1. Parents agree that getting involved with The Crucible is one of the greatest things their kids have ever done. We offer weeklong opportunities in spring and summer for total immersion in any of 15 departments, from Ceramics to Glass Blowing and Hot Wheels. • Youth Spring Break runs March 28 – April 1, with morning or afternoon sections available • Youth Summer Camps take place during six weeks, starting June 20 through August 5. Many of these classes are offered only during summer for 8-17 year olds. Again, both mornings and afternoons are available for popular classes. And as always, we have a full calendar of great community events coming up — here are just a few highlights: • Hot Couture (Feb 12-13) – the annual fusion of fashion design and industrial art • Bike Fix-a-Thons (Feb 28 & April 24) – West Oakland youth and their families get bikes fixed free • The Science of Art (March 26) – our free quarterly open house, with demonstrations • Fire & Light Soirée and Art Auction (April 9) – an exclusive dinner, performance and auction to benefit The Crucible’s art programs • First Friday Fireside Lounge (May 6) – focused on a “conception” theme, this edition coincides with Oakland’s monthly Art Murmur Being a member at The Crucible brings tangible benefits including 10% off tuition fees, anytime. This can amount to real savings, so we encourage you to become a Firecracker, or maybe even a Pyro! Learn more at TheCrucible.org/membership. Take a free tour to see what we're all about! Tours take place the first Tuesday of the month at 6pm and the third Saturday at 3pm, except during holidays and special events. I hope you will agree, it’s going to be another exciting season at The Crucible and we look forward to seeing you here. Sincerely,

David C. Miller Executive Director

ABOUT Us

Founded in 1999, The Crucible is a nonprofit arts education organization that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community. We aim to inspire creative exploration and expression through hands-on arts education and experiences. A hub of innovation built around the industrial arts, The Crucible serves as a catalyst for personal growth and community transformation. At The Crucible, forges roar, sparks fly, glass bends, neon glows and creativity explodes! Over 85 celebrated faculty and industrial arts experts teach nearly 175 courses and workshops to around 5,000 students a year at our impressive 56,000 square foot West Oakland facility, making The Crucible the largest institution of its kind on the West Coast. Our programs include adult classes as well as our award winning youth programs, in which kids 8-17 gain memorable learning experiences and make new friends. Using metal, wood, stone, glass, clay, leather and many other materials, Crucible courses have something for everyone: from novices to experienced artists and tradespeople. We offer a noncompetitive, open atmosphere for people with diverse interests and backgrounds. Our instructors have extensive experience and a passion for what they teach, and make learning industrial arts fun and unintimidating. And our students agree: 75% of those who take a Crucible class return for another, and another. The Crucible features a low faculty-to-student ratio (often 1:6 or better), which fosters a handson teaching approach. Our pricing structure includes both tuition and studio fees, as well as all the materials, tool access and safety training that students need. There are no hidden costs, however some classes may require additional materials as noted.

Classes

Crucible classes give you training and support to succeed. Most classes feature project-based lessons that allow you to create a finished piece. We utilize a variety of formats, including 10week, 5-week and weeklong courses. We also offer:

3-Hour Tasters

Tasters are a great way to explore the myriad art disciplines we offer. Not sure which of our incredible classes to take, want to introduce someone new to a craft, have an itch to just try something new without too much commitment? Take a class with a friend or make new friends while making. Try Blacksmithing, Enameling, Sand Casting, Glass Fusing, Jewelry, or Leather. What will you discover next (see page 6)?

Friday Flame Classes

End the workweek with flames, friends, and a toast. Join us for Friday Flame, a unique night out creating industrial art and enjoying good company. Enjoy a 2-hour workshop creating a work of art to take home. Then sip wine or beer with the group and marvel at your new masterpiece (see page 6).

Weekend Intensives

Weekend intensives are a full weekend, Saturday and Sunday to immerge yourself in a new skill.

Master Classes

Master classes are more advanced classes taught by experts in the field.

Lab Sessions

Lab sessions are a great benefit, exclusively for Crucible members! Practice the skills you learn in class and explore new possibilities with your craft. No instruction is provided during lab sessions, but a lab monitor will be present to answer questions, manage safety, and provide overall support. You are free to come and go at your convenience during open lab hours, however you must provide your own materials.

the Studio Tours

Take a free tour to see what we’re all about! Tours take place the first Tuesday of the month at 6 pm, and 3rd Saturday at 3 pm, except during holidays and special events. Call to schedule or for more information.

Open Houses

Team Building Workshops

Many leading Bay Area businesses participate in our Team Building Workshops, encouraging their employees to learn and collaborate in new ways. These take place in a single day and range from 2 to 8 hours in length (see page 4).

Access

The Crucible provides two special options for continuing access to our studio and tools.

Studio Rentals

Studio Rentals offer students a chance to continue their hands-on practice in areas where they are currently taking or have taken a class.

CREATE Program

Our CREATE program (CRucible Expanded Access to Tools & Equipment) gives members a chance to work in the studio area of their choice during regular studio hours, with access to professional-level equipment that would otherwise be unavailable to most home-based makers (see page 5).

We love having people visit our place. We roll the caboose out in front and light the arch to welcome visitors to our open houses and other events, where studios are open, sparks are flying, and there are plenty of hands-on opportunities to learn what The Crucible is all about. Admission is free, and our family-friendly open houses are fun for everyone.

Discover the art of liquid enameling. Originally formulated to glaze steel in the mid -19th century, it has been referred to as industrial or porcelain enamels because they are very similar to ceramic glazes. We will use these enamels in conjunction with more standard forms of enameling on copper. They can be painted, splashed, airbrushed, and combined with all sorts of other media to add spontaneity to projects. You will create several test tiles that will be used to create a small wall piece. Although some basic enameling skills would be helpful, no experience is necessary. 1 Session

20 Shades of Grey: Medieval Enameling Techniques In this class we will cover traditional grisaille enameling as well as a few experimental approaches to grisaille. Grisaille ('grey') is the application of white enamel to a black enamel background. After many applications and firings the white sinks into the black to create halftones and shading. This technique is often associated with medieval French enameling. In 2 days,we will learn to apply black enamel to a copper piece to create a smooth background. Then we will use finely-ground white enamel mixed with water, oil of lavender or turpentine to paint over the dark background. Light areas of the design will have more white enamel layers than gray areas creating an impression of low relief. We will experiment with the application of silver foil and few touches of gold to enhance the pieces. Later in the class students will have time to explore sgraffito-style grisaille and other experimental approaches. WEEKEND INTENSIVE Crucible Faculty

Spring Break & Summer Camps

The Crucible is the only place where kids can explore blacksmithing, welding, woodworking, glass blowing, ceramics and many more options, all under one roof. There's creative problem-solving and lots of opportunities to apply things they learn in school. But it’s not like homework, it’s a lot of hands-on fun… and just plain cool! And parents agree, with comments like "My son loved this camp more than any other he's ever been in!"

Hands-on Creativity

At The Crucible, kids learn by doing. Classes can involve exploring geometry and welding a customized bike frame, blowing glass vessels after learning about heat application, or soldering components to build a battery powered “beetle-bot.” Students can handcraft beautiful glass and metal jewelry in the morning and then explore torch cutting and welding in the afternoon.

Putting the “A” in STEAM

Blending creativity and art into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) helps kids really enjoy designing and building projects from their own imagination. The Crucible’s non-competitive environment lets students choose their own direction, not just copy what the teachers demonstrate. Kids make something in every class that they take home at the end of the course.

Something for Everyone

Crucible kids range from ages 8 to 17, with content geared to each age group. Camps run during Spring Break, March 28- April 1, and over a six-week period from June 20th to August 5th Students can enroll in half-day or full-day sessions, and after-care is available from 4–6 pm, see page 39. Need-based scholarships are available. All youth must have a completed parental consent form and a completed medical authorization form on file before the first day of class. These forms must be submitted for each and every quarter at The Crucible. Youth cannot participate without these forms on file. No exceptions. Youth attending all day classes should bring a sack lunch. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. No weapon making in youth classes.

Youth Blacksmithing Youth Blacksmithing (ages 12-17) Learn to bend and shape steel in The Crucible's smithy as you practice traditional blacksmithing techniques such as drawing, bending, twisting, punching, slitting and drifting using the forge and anvil. Students will learn to forge with confidence and complete projects such as a bracelet, hook, fork, and spoon. SPRING BREAK Crucible Faculty
