Blues, tough phases and stress are a part of everyone’s life. But beyond usual responses, some find it extremely difficult to cope with Stress, Anxiety and Depression. Their reaction and behavior towards challenging or traumatic incidents may contribute to emotional and/or physical disorders.

Studies show that a larger percentage of Women are subjected to emotional health disorders mainly Depression and Panic attacks every year, over Men. The universal fact on which depression treatment centers handle depression in women is based on the premise that effects of depression on women cannot be compared to that on men. There are striking differences that are often dependent upon causes of depression in women and patterns of symptoms. The causes can be usually categorized under reproductive hormones, societal pressures and even woman’s response stimuli to stress.

Differences in behavior between Men & Women When depressed, men tend to blame others for their condition and women associate their condition with themselves and feel guilty. Women feel sad and worthless as opposed to men who feel angry and irritable due to a bruised ego. Women get scared easily but men are excessively guarded. Women try to stay away from conflicts as much as possible and men are usually inclined to get into conflicts. Women tend to eat more, sleep more and also gain weight during depression. But the same cannot be said of men since they tend to find solace in alcohol, sports and sex.

There are many reasons why more women are diagnosed with depression than men. Genetic, biological, social and emotional factors specific to women explain the difference. Here is a list of kinds of depression specific to women.

Genetics:

Although not a hard and fast rule, if there has been a family history of

depression, then woman is quite likely to develop one.

PMS:

Many women experience

Premenstrual

Syndrome. But some are

exceptionally sensitive to responses and behavioral changes a week before their menstruation. Their behavior and reactions can interfere with their routine functioning and result in extreme anxiety, irritability and mood swings.

Postpartum Depression: Yet another form of depression that is specific to womenfolk and sometimes demands depression treatments, postpartum depression occurs in women a few weeks following child birth. Women experience a lot of physical and hormonal changes with the arrival of a newborn. While mood swings are common in most women, some experience extreme reactions that demand psychological intervention.

Changing and raging Hormones: Science has shown that hormones directly impact the brain and influence emotions and moods. While subtle changes often go undetected, there are different phases in a woman’s life when these hormones can evoke undesirable and debilitating responses and behaviors in you. Puberty, pregnancy, menstruation and menopause are some common examples.

Menopause: Depression treatments are commonly utilized by menopausal women. Some women transition into menopause with little or no problems but some others experience immense troubles and heavy depressive episodes before they settle into their new phase.

Premenstrual problems in some women are mild but some others have extreme problems. Pregnancy and infertility have been identified as two of the most common reasons for depression in women. Both have their own associated reasons why they cause depression. Postpartum depression usually tends to subside in a few weeks after child birth but some women observe extreme reaction. Menopause is yet another common cause. Health problems are also potential causes of depression.

Understandably, besides the above mentioned reasons, there are plenty others that cause depression in women. These include tragedy in the family, loss of a loved one,

difficult

relationship,

sexual

abuse,

family

responsibilities,

marital

discord,

discrimination issues, financial problems and body image issues. Depression can have lasting debilitating impact on social life, relationships, career and also on yourself and hence treatments need to be immediate. When a woman undergoes signs of depression, it is most likely to disrupt her daily life and functioning and can make life for her and people around her painful and challenging.
