GREETINGS If you have picked up this guidebook, you are on your way to discovering a unique part of Maine, home to fun recreational, cultural and employment opportunities. Huhtamaki, the parent company for Chinet Paper Plates, is housed in both Fairfield and Waterville. Mid-Maine is home to several hospitals and four colleges that are the cornerstones of our local economy along with pulp and paper manufacturing. Culturally, (we pronounce it Culcha) mid-Maine is home to the Two Cent Bridge, the oldest wire suspension bridge in the country; Maine’s largest art gallery, Colby College Museum of Art; and nearby Skowhegan is host to the oldest agricultural fair in the US, Skowhegan State Fair. But that’s not all: we are a hub for sustainable agriculture, and the Common Ground Fair boasts 100,000 visitors in late September. Waterville is home to the Maine International Film Festival, Waterville Opera House, Common Street Arts and a myriad of events and festivals scattered throughout the area yearround, including our own Taste of Waterville. Recreationally, odds are that it’s happening here! Whether it is world class bass fishing, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, skiing (water, downhill and Nordic), tubing, snowmobiling, ATVing, skydiving, birdwatching, geocaching, lazing around and reading a book …you name it, we can accommodate your idea of fun! Located on the east bank of the Kennebec River across the bridge from Waterville, Winslow is a town rich in history and pride. Settlers arrived in the early 1700s and built their homes around the protective “Fort Halifax” on the confluence of the Sebasticook and Kennebec Rivers, major routes in transporting food, goods, and more settlers. The Winslow Fort Halifax Blockhouse, formerly the nation’s oldest wooden structure of its type, was rebuilt from some of the timbers of the original blockhouse that was swept down the Kennebec River by raging flood waters on April 1, 1987.

Winslow has a population of approximately 8,000 and provides excellent commercial, industrial, and residential opportunities. Johnny’s Selected Seeds, one of the world’s top rated seed catalog companies, is open for business on Benton Avenue in Winslow. Mid-State Machine Products, one of Maine’s largest manufacturers of specialty machinery, is favorably located on Route 201. Elanco is located on Route 137 and is a leading manufacturer and supplier of poultry biologics for the U.S. and international vaccine markets. A stable, council-manager government has operated under a Town Charter since 1969. Winslow has successfully maintained one of the more attractive property tax rates in the area and can boast an excellent educational system, outstanding athletic programs, and some of the finest recreational facilities in the state. Winslow is a warm, friendly, progressive community and an excellent place to call home.

by Civil War veterans, and the Pressey House Lakeside Bed & Breakfast on Summer Street at the northerly end of Messalonskee Lake. Private homes range from stately New England classics to cape and ranch homes. Oakland is a beautiful place to reside and raise a family. The town has a reputation for some of the finest schools in the entire state and for its fiscally conservative municipal government. Preparing for the future, Oakland has a comprehensive plan to promote organized development and a full range of municipal services, including curbside parking. Because of its proximity to Interstate 95 and prime development areas, Oakland was selected as the site for FirstPark Maine’s Premier Technology Center. Billed as the first of its kind in Maine, this high tech park provides suitable locations for the emerging businesses of the 21st century.

COMMUNITIES

Oakland, neighboring Waterville to the west, is the gateway to the well-known Belgrade Lakes. Three major bodies of water in the Belgrade Lakes chain dominate the landscape, providing many opportunities for recreation. The attractiveness of the lakes makes it easy to see why the town has one of the largest concentrations of summer camps for children in all of Maine. Oakland was originally settled as “West Waterville,” but early inhabitants soon tired of being west of anyone, as the historians tell it, and incorporated under their own name in 1883. It was soon apparent that the town’s tumbling Messalonskee Stream would draw industries to take advantage of this considerable source of water power. A front runner in recognizing environmental issues, Oakland was one of the first towns in the state to build a municipal sewerage treatment facility. Among attractions is the Memorial Hall on Church Street, built

ROME

THORNDIKE

Rome is located in the heart of the Belgrade chain of lakes. There are fishing, sailing, and swimming opportunities to be enjoyed in any of the seven lakes of this 150 square mile lake region. A popular 40 mile canoe adventure takes paddlers through the lakes chain. Rome was first settled in 1780 and originally named West Pond Plantation. The town was incorporated in 1804. Rome is an attractive community in which to settle.

The town of Thorndike was established in 1819. It is a quaint little village with a population of 890. Miles of winding rural roads capture breathtaking views.

www.romemaine.com

www.sidneymaine.org

Sidney is a fast growing community noted for having one of the lower tax rates in Kennebec County. Surrounding the town to the east is the Kennebec River and to the west is Messalonskee Lake, where the headquarters for the famed New England Music Camp is located. The lake is also surrounded by summer resorts and cottage colonies. Both Messalonskee Lake and the Kennebec River have public boat access, and several small ponds make up a nice, rural setting. Centrally located are the Town Office, Grange Hall, Transfer/Recycling Facility, and the Public Works Department. The James H. Bean School, grades K-5 (see page 16), has been recognized by the State of Maine as a leader in efficiency and education. The district is distinguished by having had two National Educator Milken Award winners, both from Sidney.

The small community is famously known for the “Gordon Hill Murders” that took place June 16, 1873. The court handed down a guilty verdict and a sentence of hanging was carried out. A letter later arrived claiming the wrong man was hanged; someone else had committed the gruesome murders. Because of this trial, capital punishment was ended in Maine.

UNITY

www.unityme.org

Unity is located on Routes 9 and 202 and was incorporated June 22, 1804. It is the home of Unity College, which specializes in environmental sciences and outdoor recreation. The college has an art gallery, lecture and concert series, and an excellent library with a children’s loft, all of which are open to the public. Unity is located on the shores of Lake Winnecook, a fine place to boat, fish and swim. A public boat ramp and ample parking provides easy access to the lake. Also located on the shores of Lake Winnecook is the Field of Dreams Athletic Complex that boasts a walking path, several ball fields, picnic tables, and an excellent playground with all new equipment. The Snowdusters Snowmobile Club maintains several snowmobile trails throughout the town for winter fun. Unity is home to Unity Raceway, a local summer favorite of stock car fans. It is located on Route 139 and is open from midspring to late fall. Every fall, the popular Common Ground Fair attracts tens of thousands of people to witness the delights of rural living and natural food. Unity’s attractions make it an all-seasons place to work and play.

www.midmainechamber.com

Located in three strategic areas are the town’s Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, serving the needs for all fire and rescue. Access to neighboring towns and cities, such as Waterville and Augusta, are Routes 23, 27, 104 and Interstate 95. I-95 makes this town a prime location for industries because of its own entrance and exit ramps. The rest of the community is a rural atmosphere made up of farming and small business.

FISHING Maine is home to some of the most pristine waterways, clean air, and expansive outdoor activities anywhere. The mid-Maine region, centered in Waterville, provides easy access to anything that an outdoor enthusiast would want to do. We are home to a variety of fishing venues, including China Lake, the Belgrade Lakes Chain, the Kennebec and Sebasticook rivers, and many smaller fishing holes throughout the region. Our lakes host many fishing tournaments, and when the winter cold sets in, our

ice fishing season really heats up! Our waters hold tremendous small and large mouth bass populations, and many of our lakes have significant trout and landlocked salmon populations.

With abundant acres of accessible hunting area, Maine is home to some of the best deer, moose, and bear hunting in the country. Bird hunting including wild turkey, waterfowl, pheasant and grouse draws many hunters to our state as well. Whether you prefer rifle, archery or back powder, we have a season for

you! If you are a novice to hunting in Maine, you may prefer a guided adventure. For all hunting laws, license information and Maine Guide contacts visit Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife at www.maine.gov/ifw.

populated state in New England, Maine represents a significant portion of the breeding range for many eastern woodland bird species. The state’s abundant precipitation (more than 40” a year) and glaciated landscape have created thousands of lakes, ponds, wetlands, and rivers that are ideal habitat for a variety of water birds. We’ve been taking care of the important things since 1901. Knowing what really matters to Mainers is the key to our longevity. That’s why people trust us for all their personal, business, life and health insurance needs. We firmly believe that partnerships are powerful. Let’s all work together to keep Maine neighborhoods safe — for today and for the next generation.

Straight A’s For eight consecutive times, Inland Hospital has

earned an A grade hospital safety score from the Leapfrog Group. This honor means our team is among the best in the nation—in fact we’re one of only 133 hospitals in the country, and one of six in Maine, to perform at this high of a level. Delivering top-notch care to our patients and having our team recognized for their dedication— this is becoming our favorite family tradition.
