In un contesto economico difficile come quello dell’anno appena terminato, Midac ha saputo quasi confermare i risultati raggiunti nel 2011, periodo in cui l’azienda ha registrato una crescita del 19%. Il continuo processo di sviluppo in Italia e all’estero ci ha permesso di acquisire nuove quote di mercato.

In a difficult economic situation like this past year, Midac was almost able to repeat the results it achieved in 2011, a period in which the company recorded a growth of 19%. The continuous development process in Italy and abroad has allowed us to acquire new market shares.

Nel complesso il bilancio è sicuramente positivo. Il settore in cui operiamo è stato caratterizzato da un calo medio del 10% mentre noi abbiamo registrato solo una leggera flessione del 3,7% riuscendo a mantenere i livelli occupazionali stabili.

Overall, the financial statement was definitely positive. Our industry was characterised by an average decline of 10% while we recorded only a slight 3.7% drop and managed to keep employment levels stable.

La crescita si è registrata soprattutto in quello che definiamo “settore industriale”, grazie alla produzione di batterie a trazione e batterie stazionarie. Abbiamo proseguito con il processo di internazionalizzazione, infatti a inizio 2012 abbiamo infatti inaugurato una filiale commerciale in UK, che va ad aggiungersi a quelle aperte precedentemente in Francia, Germania e Olanda. Per quanto riguarda la produzione, abbiamo deciso di mantenere gli stabilimenti in Italia, nelle sedi di Soave e Cremona. Abbiamo consolidato la nostra posizione, confermandoci come un’azienda leader in Europa e classificandoci al terzo posto per la fabbricazione di batterie industriali e al sesto per quelle di avviamento.

Growth occurred especially in those areas we call the “industrial sector” thanks to the production of traction batteries and stationary batteries. We continued our internationalisation process. In fact, in the beginning of 2012 we inaugurated a commercial branch in the UK which is in addition to those previously opened in France, Germany and the Netherlands. As for production, we decided to keep the facilities in Italy, in Soave and Cremona. We consolidated our position, proving ourselves to be a leading company in Europe and coming in in third place in industrial battery manufacturing and sixth place for starter battery manufacturing.

Tra i progetti in programma c’è la ricerca di una maggiore riconoscibilità del marchio Midac. Allo stesso tempo stiamo cercando di rinforzare le vendite nel comparto del primo equipaggiamento con il lancio di due nuove tipologie di batterie Start&Stop ad acido libero e ad acido trattenuto. Si tratta della tecnologia del futuro in quanto ormai questo genere di batterie viene montato su tutte le auto. Grazie a questa innovazione riteniamo di poter compensare la flessione delle vendite registrata quest’anno a causa della crisi dell’intero settore automobilistico. Stiamo inoltre perfezionando all’interno dei nostri stabilimenti produttivi una nuova tecnologia produttiva il punching, dal quale ci aspettiamo di ottenere un concreto vantaggio competitivo.

One of the projects we have planned is to increase recognition of the Midac brand. At the same time, we are seeking to reinforce sales in the original equipment area with the launch of two new types of Start&Stop batteries - flooded acid batteries and sealed acid batteries. We are talking about technology of the future since this type of battery is now installed on all cars. With this innovation, we think we can compensate for the drop in sales this past year that was due to the crisis in the entire automobile industry. In our manufacturing facilities we are also perfecting a new technology called punching which we hope will give us a strong competitive advantage.

La crescita prevista per il 2013 è del 10% in quanto ci aspettiamo una ripresa dei mercati ai quali siamo legati e una ulteriore crescita della divisione batterie stazionarie.

We are forecasting 10% growth in 2013 since we expect recovery in the markets we are tied to and further growth in the stationary battery division.

L’innovazione e la qualità sono due leve fondamentali per l’azienda. Midac considera da sempre come obiettivi strategici l’innovazione tecnologica e il miglioramento continuo del prodotto e attribuisce un valore fondamentale alle attività di ricerca sviluppate all’interno dei propri laboratori. Tutto ciò unito ad un’organizzazione del lavoro improntata sull’esempio della scuola della casa automobilistica giapponese Toyota, dove tutti i dipendenti concorrono alla maggiore efficienza del processo produttivo nello stile della filosofia “lean”. Questo modello prevede che tutti i procedimenti vengano monitorati in tempo reale con l’apporto di appositi cruscotti su cui viene segnato tutto.

Innovation and quality are two fundamental resources for our company. Midac has always considered technological innovation and continuous improvement to be its strategic objectives and acknowledges the importance of the research activities carried out in its own laboratories. All of this is combined with a work organisation style based on the example set by the Japanese automobile manufacturer, Toyota, where all of the employees contribute to the increased efficiency of the manufacturing process according to the “lean” philosophy. This model requires that all processes are monitored in real time with the help of special dashboards where everything is noted.

Fino ad oggi per noi mantenere la produzione in Italia è stato vantaggioso e ci ha permesso di continuare a crescere nel mercato europeo. La qualità prodotta in Italia e il know-how che abbiamo qui sono incomparabili rispetto ai prodotti che vengono realizzati fuori dal nostro Paese. Il Made in Italy inoltre ha ancora senso perché ci permette di essere sempre più competitivi, raggiungendo i livelli delle aziende leader in Europa.

To this day, keeping production in Italy has been an advantage for us and has allowed us to continue to grow in the European market. The quality produced in Italy and the know-how we have here cannot be matched when compared with products made outside of our country. Made in Italy still makes sense because it allows us to continue to be more competitive, reaching the levels of the leading European companies.

Per il prossimo futuro prevediamo di espanderci anche in mercati extra europei, e guardiamo con particolare interesse al Far East, alle Americhe e all’Australia. È in fase di valutazione un progetto che prevede l’apertura di nuove filiali commerciali in quelle zone.

In the near future we plan to expand to markets outside of Europe. We are particularly looking at the Far East, the Americas and Australia. We are currently evaluating a project to open new commercial branches in those areas.

L’ANNO DELLA NUOVA TRAZIONE THE YEAR OF THE NEW TRACTION BATTERY Due chiacchere con Stefano Nogara, Industrial Batteries Specialist, su quanto accadrà nel 2013 per quanto riguarda le batterie industriali

We sat down for a chat with Stefano Nogara, Industrial Batteries Specialist, to discuss what will happen in 2013 regarding industrial batteries

Abbiamo chiesto a Stefano Nogara, Industrial Batteries Specialist di Midac, che cosa l’azienda abbia in cantiere per il settore delle batterie industriali per il 2013, anno in cui si attualizzeranno alcuni progetti a cui l’azienda sta lavorando da qualche tempo.

We asked Stefano Nogara, Industrial Batteries Specialist for Midac, what the company has in store for the industrial battery sector for 2013, a year in which we see the implementation of a few of the projects the company has been working on for quite some time.

Come è cambiato in questo ultimo anno il mercato delle batterie industriali? Ritengo che il mercato stia proseguendo il naturale processo evolutivoadattativo che ha sempre caratterizzato il mondo delle batterie, fortemente influenzato dalla crisi economica mondiale, ma allo stesso tempo con il rinnovato impulso derivante dallo sviluppo dell’energy storage e dalla crescente domanda di soluzioni atte a soddisfare nuove applicazioni, in particolare legate al mondo delle energie rinnovabili.

How has the industrial battery market changed in the past year? I believe the market is continuing the natural evolutionary/adaptive process that has always been a part of the battery industry. It is heavily influenced by the world economic crisis, but at the same time is influenced by the renewed impetus resulting from the development of energy storage and the increasing demand for solutions capable of meeting the needs of new applications, particularly those tied to renewable energy.

Quali sono state le scelte fatte da Midac per essere competitiva su questo specifico mercato? Probabilmente lo sviluppo di prodotti che meglio soddisfino le specifiche esigenze applicative, con particolare attenzione agli aspetti legati a qualità, sicurezza e ambiente, unitamente ad un ostinato impegno nella ricerca di efficienza produttiva e progettuale e alla creazione di strutture in grado di fornire un servizio capillare e consistente a livello globale, rappresenta adeguatamente l’approccio di MIDAC.

What choices did Midac make to be competitive in this specific market? I would say probably the development of products that better satisfy the specific application needs, paying special attention to aspects linked to quality, safety and the environment along with a stubborn commitment to seeking manufacturing and design efficiency and the creation of structures capable of providing comprehensive and consistent service on a global level. This sums up the MIDAC approach.

Ci sono nuovi prodotti in cantiere? Il 2013 porterà all’attesa concretizzazione di progetti che costituiscono l’impegno e l’obiettivo degli ultimi due anni di attività di ricerca e sviluppo. Particolare rilevanza hanno i miglioramenti che saranno introdotti nella gamma di prodotti trazione con lo scopo di ottimizzarne le caratteristiche funzionali e prestazionali, oltre al lancio di una nuova gamma di batterie formato “DINblock”, sulla scia del successo ottenuto con la stessa versione “block” nel formato British Standard, e di innovativi prodotti a ridotta manutenzione. Per quanto concerne i prodotti stazionari, prosegue l’implementazione di batterie per impiego nell’ambito delle energie rin-

What new products are in the works? 2013 will bring us the implementation of projects that we have been researching and developing for the past two years. Of particular importance are the improvements that will be introduced in the line of traction products with the goal of optimising their functional characteristics and performance. We will also be launching a new line of “DINblock” batteries in the wake of the success of the same version, “block”, in the British Standard format along with innovative reduced maintenance products. As for stationary products, we are continuing our implementation of batteries for use in the renewable energy field

Il 2013 porterà all’attesa concretizzazione di progetti che costituiscono l’impegno e l’obiettivo degli ultimi due anni di attività di ricerca e sviluppo novabili e l’integrazione in gamma di prodotti diversificati, con tecnologia VRLA (AGM e GEL). Quali prevede saranno gli sviluppi tecnologici? Indubbiamente l’approccio alle nuove tecnologie pone una nuova sfida per gli anni a venire. In particolare sistemi integrati basati sulla tecnologia piombo-acido, così come le batterie agli ioni di litio, citate a testimonianza delle diverse tipologie di accumulatori elettrochimici che rappresentano la soluzione a specifici fabbisogni applicativi, sono già oggetto di studio, anche se flessibilità ed affidabilità del “grande vecchio” (il piombo) rimarranno incontrastati per molti anni ancora.

2013 will bring us the implementation of projects that we have been researching and developing for the past two years and the integration of diversified products with VRLA (AGM and GEL) technology. What are the expected technological developments? Undoubtedly the approach to new technologies poses a new challenge for the upcoming years. In particular, integrated systems based on lead-acid technology are already being studied, just like with lithium ion batteries, which are cited as evidence of the various kinds of electrochemical accumulators that represent the solution to specific application needs. Although, the flexibility and reliability of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;grand old manâ&#x20AC;? (lead) will be unmatched for many more years. MOTIVE

Maurizio Perini, nuovo Sales Manager Stand By Batteries Division di Midac, è motivato a far crescere il livello di mercato delle stazionarie, stimolato dai nuovi obiettivi posti dall’azienda di Soave. Scopriamo assieme a voi qual è il suo back ground professionale e quale lo spirito con cui si accinge ad affrontare una nuova sfida.

“I started work in 1983 as a packer in the commercial division of what was then Singer. When I left in 1990, I was the manager of the industrial product spare parts warehouse. In 1990 I started my career path in what was then FIAMM GS, a joint venture between FIAMM and JSB, with a factory in Avezzano. FIAMM GS produced and sold small lead batteries for use in UPS, safety systems, etc. I was the commercial back office manager so I took care of logistics, order management, transportation and coordinating with production, along with many other things. When I started there, we invoiced around 7 billion lire and in 1994, when I moved on to another job we invoiced 23. In 1994 I became Area Manager for export for Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. In 1996, after developing my area, I was entrusted with the Italian market managing a sales network made up of 24 agents and with revenue of 18 billion Lire. In 1999 I left Fiamm GS and moved on to Yuasa as manager of corporate customers. In this capacity, I introduced Yuasa to Enel and TIM, managing to win some important bids. In 2001 I left Yuasa for Exide as Key Account manager for some of the major UPS and telecommunication equipment manufacturers. Then, in 2005, I moved on to Hoppecke Italia as Manager for the Italian stand-by market. And finally, last year, I came to Midac.”

Perché ha scelto Midac? Cosa l’ha portata qui dopo tutto questo percorso? Perché mi è piaciuta la filosofia di Midac, in relazione al mercato delle stazionarie, e perché mi è stata proposta una sfida assai stimolante, cioè quella di contribuire a far crescere in maniera importante questa Azienda in questo mercato. Com’è stato il suo impatto con l’azienda? Senz’altro molto positivo. Ho riscontrato nei colleghi una gran voglia di fare e, sempre, estrema disponibilità. Quali sono le caratteristiche che reputa importanti per chi oggi ha a che fare con il mondo della vendita? Il mondo delle batterie stazionarie è un mondo che segue leggi tutte particolari. Credo comunque che ci siano alcuni valori che possono essere assunti come trasversali: chiarezza, competenza tecnica, flessibilità, e, soprattutto, mai promettere quel che non si può mantenere. Quale sarà il suo compito in Midac? Contribuire a far crescere in maniera importante Midac nel mondo delle batterie stazionarie, introducendola presso clienti istituzionali finora mai affrontati, presso grandi OEM’s nel mondo UPS e Telecom in Italia ed in Europa.

E i suoi obiettivi? Fare bene quello per cui sono arrivato in Midac. Il suo sogno di crescita professionale? Contribuire a creare una squadra che sia in grado di raggiungere, mantenere e migliorare gli obiettivi che ci siamo prefissi.

Why did you choose Midac? What brought you here all this way? I liked Midac’s philosophy on stationary batteries and I was offered a very stimulating challenge, one that will allow me to contribute in an important way to this company’s growth in the market.

How did your encounter with the company go? Definitely very positively. I found my colleagues have a great desire to accomplish things and they are always extremely helpful.

Ho iniziato a lavorare nel 1983 come imballatore nella divisione commerciale dell’allora Singer. Nel 1990, quando me ne andai, ero il responsabile del magazzino ricambi prodotti industriali. Nel 1990 iniziai il mio percorso nell’allora FIAMM GS, joint venture tra FIAMM e JSB, con fabbrica ad Avezzano. La FIAMM GS produceva e vendeva piccoli accumulatori al piombo per utilizzo in UPS, sistemi di sicurezza, etc. Il mio ruolo era di responsabile del back office commerciale quindi mi occupavo della logistica, della gestione degli ordini, dei trasporti, del coordinamento con la produzione e di altro ancora. Quando arrivai fatturavamo circa 7 miliardi di Lire e, nel 1994, quando passai ad un altro incarico ne fatturavamo 23. Nel 1994 divenni Area Manager export per Europa meridionale, Europa orientale, Nord Africa e Medio Oriente. Nel 1996, dopo aver sviluppato l’area di mia competenza, mi venne affidata la responsabilità del mercato Italiano, con la gestione di una rete di vendita composta da 24 agenti e un fatturato di 18 miliardi di Lire. Nel 1999 lasciai la Fiamm GS per passare alla Yuasa, come responsabile dei clienti istituzionali. In questa veste introdussi Yuasa in Enel e TIM, riuscendo ad aggiudicarmi alcune gare piuttosto importanti. Nel 2001 lasciai Yuasa per Exide, con il ruolo di Key Account responsabile di alcuni tra i maggiori produttori di UPS e di apparati per telecomunicazioni. In seguito, nel 2005, passai in Hoppecke Italia, come Responsabile del mercato Italiano, stand by. Finalmente, l’anno scorso, sono approdato in Midac.

What characteristics do you feel are important for those involved in sales today? The world of stationary batteries follows its own special laws. There are, however, some values that I believe can be considered to be across the board: clarity, technical skill, flexibility and, above all, never making a promise you can’t keep. What will you be responsible for at Midac? To contribute to Midac’s major growth in stationary batteries, introducing it to institutional customers that have never before been addressed, at large OEMs in the UPS industry and Telecom in Italy and Europe. And your objectives? To succeed at what I came to Midac to do. Your dream for professional growth? To contribute to the creation of a team capable of achieving, maintaining and improving the goals we set.

LA TECNOLOGIA VINCE AD AUTOMECHANIKA TECHNOLOGY WINS AT AUTOMECHANIKA

Ad Automechanika Midac si distingue presentando prodotti quali le batterie Stop & Start, Sigillum e le gamme Hyperbolis ed Hermeticum, che rappresentano il top di gamma in quanto a progresso tecnologico per l’automotive. Dall’11 al 16 settembre 2012 si è svolta a Francoforte la fiera Automechanika, una fiera internazionale dedicata all’industria automobilistica, che ha segnato un record di presenze tra gli espositori - che hanno raggiunto quasi 5000 presenze - provenienti da 74 paesi. I visitatori sono stati 148.000 da ogni parte del mondo, e hanno sottolineato l’importanza e la larga eco che caratterizza questa fiera, che si attesta ancora una volta leader nel settore automotive. Automechanika ha dimostrato così di essere polo di scambio di innovazioni e ricerca affidabile e costante e di costituire il luogo di incontro per i rappresentanti dell’industria, del business workshop e del commercio, e di essere quindi in grado di raggiungere tutti i target quali compagnie petrolifere, stazioni di rifornimento, concessionari di automobili, laboratori, operatori autolavaggio indipendenti, imprese di trasporto, ecc. Si sono visti allestimenti di grande impatto, sia nei padiglioni espositivi che nelle aree esterne, e vi è stata una commistione rilevante di informazioni ed eventi. Si è messo in luce il rapido progresso tecnologico nel settore automobilistico e Midac si è distinta in questo presentando prodotti di gamma, quali le batterie Stop & Start, realizzate con una tecnologia molto importante per le case automobilistiche impegnate nella costruzione di veicoli atti alla riduzione di Co2, o le batterie Sigillum, MOTIVE

Midac distinguished itself at Automechanika by presenting products such as the STOP & START and Sigillum batteries and the Hyperbolis and Hermeticum lines, which represent the top of the line in technological progress for the automotive industry. Automechanika, an international fair dedicated to the automobile industry, took place in Frankfurt September 11-16, 2012. It reached record numbers among the exhibitors - reaching almost 5000 attendees - from 74 countries. There were 148,000 visitors from all over the world and they highlighted the importance and large impact of this fair, which once more proves to be a leader in the automotive sector. Automechanika has proven itself to be a point of exchange, innovation and reliable and constant research and to be a meeting point for industry representatives. It has also proven itself to be a place for business workshops and commerce and to thus be able to reach all targets such as oil companies, filling stations, automobile dealers, laboratories, independent car wash operators, transportation companies, etc. There were high impact displays in both the exhibition pavilions as well as the outdoor areas and there was a relevant mixture of information and events. Cambia il modo di utilizzare le batteria per i mezzi pesanti, ed ecco perché sempre più efficienza è chiesta alle batterie per i veicoli industriali. Oltre ad essere sempre più indispensabile garantire durata ed efficienza delle prestazioni in caso di lunghe percorrenze e in termini di vita di attesa, i maggiori servizi presenti a bordo veicolo hanno contribuito a trasformare le batterie da semplice sistema per l’avviamento del motore a vera e propria riserva di energia. Battery use for heavy vehicles is changing, and that is why more efficiency is continually being required from batteries for industrial vehicles. Arrivato ad ottobre scorso, una volta conclusa l’avventura con Di Carlo, Eugenio Corini torna al Chievo nella nuova veste di mister, dopo la rapida parentesi al Portogruaro e le esperienze, sempre in B, con il Crotone ed in Lega Pro con il Frosinone. Mister Corini si affaccia così alla serie A con il “suo” Chievo, quello che gli regalò tante emozioni nelle 134 partite giocate dal ‘98 al 2003. Con questo entusiasmo inizia il suo percorso, parlando a giornalisti e tifosi a Peschiera: “Per me si realizza un sogno, quello di guidare il Chievo (…). Mi sento pronto per sfruttare questa grande opportunità che mi ha offerto la società. Il mio intento é quello di trasmettere competenza, entusiasmo e motivazioni alla squadra. Tutte quelle componenti che c’erano nel “mio” Chievo, quello che nel 2001 ha raggiunto la serie A”. It occurred in October, once the adventure with Di Carlo was over. Eugenio Corini returned to Chievo in his new role as coach after the quick stint at Portogruaro and his experience in Series B with Crotone and Pro League with Frosinone. Coach Corini will thus embark in Series A with “his” Chievo, which brought him so much excitement in the 134 games he played with them from 1998 through 2003. He started his journey, speaking with enthusiasm to fans and journalists at Peschiera: “Coaching Chievo is like a dream come true for me (...). I feel ready to take on this great opportunity the club’s given me. I intend to bring competence, enthusiasm and motivation to the team. These are all things that were part of “my” Chievo team that got promoted to Series A in 2001.” Motive interviewed the new coach in Peschiera between practice sessions, to learn about his goals and the feelings that connect him to the yellow and blue team and our region. Coach, what values do you share with the Chievo Verona company? The same values I already shared when I was a player, that is, the great sense of belonging to a great football team. It is a feeling that grew over the years in which I was part of the team as a player and today I am proud to have returned to it as coach. What was the impact of your return to Verona as coach? I was lucky to already be working in this capacity, so from the work point of view it was definitely interesting since I am coming face a new challenge. Doing so here has greater emotional value than with another team.

Mister, quali sono i valori che condivide con la società Chievo Verona? What sports values do you believe in? I greatly believe in fair competition, in respect and the duty we have to do our best to reach a goal, with dependability, consistency and respect.

What relationship do you have with the Verona region? I know the Verona area well because I’ve been living here for years. I have an excellent relationship with the city. I live here on a daily basis and am very comfortable here.

Qual è il suo rapporto con il territorio veronese? Conosco bene il territorio veronese perché oramai ci abito da tanti anni; ho uno splendido rapporto con la città, la vivo quotidianamente, mi trovo molto bene qui.

And with its fans? I have a strong respect for the fans. I listen to their opinions and when I can I like to talk with them. I am convinced that when you respect one another you can share and talk about anything.

E con la sua tifoseria? C’è un forte senso di rispetto con i tifosi, ascolto le loro opinioni, quando c’è la possibilità faccio due chiacchiere volentieri. Sono convinto che quando c’è rispetto si possa condividere e parlare di qualsiasi cosa. Se non fosse stato il calcio che altro sport avrebbe scelto? Troppo difficile pensare ad un altro sport, perché fin da quando avevo tre anni avevo una palla tra i piedi. Sicuramente sarebbe stato uno sport di squadra.

If you weren’t involved in football, what other sport would you have chosen? It’s too hard to think about another sport because I have been playing football since I was three years old. It would definitely have been a team sport.

Cosa le ha dato invece il calcio? Mi ha dato tutto, una passione da bambino, un sogno che volevo far diventare un lavoro. Poi sono arrivato a giocare in serie A e adesso mi trovo ancora qui in un’altra veste. Direi quindi che mi ha dato tantissimo..

What has football given you? It gave me everything, enthusiasm as a child and a dream to make it into a career. Then I started playing in Series A and I am still here, in another capacity. I would say it has given me a lot.

Quanto è importante il fair play oggi? E’ importantissimo perché il rispetto verso l’avversario alla lunga paga e quando dai rispetto lo ottieni anche.

How important is fair play today? It is extremely important because respect for your adversary pays in the long run and when you give respect you get it back.

ENERGY FROM THE AFRICAN SUN FOR THE ST KIZITO HOSPITAL Midac ancora una volta protagonista di una nuova operazione per l’Africa, che prevede l’installazione, nei prossimi mesi, di un impianto fotovoltaico per dare corrente elettrica all’ospedale St Kizito di Mikumi in Tanzania: un progetto ancora una volta pensato e proposto da “Medici con L’Africa-Cuamm”

Midac is once again a leading player in a new operation for Africa. Within upcoming months, this operation will include the installation of a photovoltaic plant to supply electricity to the Mikumi St Kizito Hospital in Tanzania, a project created and proposed by “Doctors with Africa-Cuamm”

Il passo di Midac verso l’Africa, che ha avuto un bellissimo epilogo la scorsa primavera con il contributo per la realizzazione di una nuova sala parto e per l’adeguamento di una sala operatoria dell’ospedale di Tosamaganga in Tanzania, grazie al progetto dell’organizzazione non governativa “Medici con l’Africa-Cuamm”, continua ora con una nuova iniziativa. Stavolta si parla di nuove tecnologie per migliorare l’efficienza energetica dell’ospedale, e in particolare dell’installazione di un impianto fotovoltaico per la produzione di energia elettrica che permetta l’auto sostenibilità, soprattutto nelle situazioni di emergenza. Secondo il progetto “Sistema fotovoltaico per l’ospedale St Kizito di Mikumi in Tanzania” presentato da “Medici con L’Africa-Cuamm”, il contesto sanitario specifico attual-

Midac’s step towards Africa, which came to a beautiful ending last spring with its contribution towards the construction of a new delivery room and the upgrading of an operating room in the Tosamaganga hospital in Tanzania through the project by the NGO “Doctors with Africa-Cuamm” continues now with a new initiative. This time it involves new technologies to make the hospital energy efficient and, in particular, the installation of a photovoltaic plant for the production of electricity which will allow it to be self-reliant, especially in emergency situations. According to the project “Photovoltaic system for the Mikumi St Kizito Hospital in Tanzania” presented by “Doctors with Africa-Cuamm, the current health situation presents numerous problems since “the health services that ensure primary care are quite lacking in the Mikumi hospital’s service area. The main causes include insufficient financial, material and infrastructural resources available (water and electricity above all), the absence of mechanisms to refer the sick to qualified health structures, the lack of motivation and insufficient skill of the health workers and the scarcity of qualified health personnel. The hardest hit are pregnant women and children, always the most vulnerable categories in the event of inadequate health services. Maternal deaths are caused by obstructed labour or post-partum haemorrhage; neonatal deaths are largely due to intrapartum asphyxia and septicaemia while malaria, along with pneumonia and diarrhoea are the main causes of death in children under 5 years of age”.

THE CURRENT SITUATION The Mikumi hospital currently has a workforce of 103, 36 of which are qualified health professionals. Reading the data from 2009 to today, the Mikumi hospital has had a significant increase in workload. In view of this, the infrastructure (light, water, sewerage system) has not kept pace. MOTIVE

mente presenta numerose problematiche, poiché “i servizi sanitari che garantiscono le cure primarie sono alquanto carenti nel bacino di utenza dell’ospedale di Mikumi. Le cause principali comprendono le insufficienti risorse finanziarie, materiali e infrastrutturali a disposizione (rete idrica ed elettrica in primis), l’assenza di meccanismi per riferire i malati a strutture sanitarie qualificate, la poca motivazione e l’insufficiente competenza degli operatori sanitari, la scarsezza del personale sanitario qualificato. I più colpiti sono le donne gravide ed i bambini, da sempre le categorie più vulnerabili in caso di servizi sanitari inadeguati. Le morti materne sono causate da parto ostruito o da emorragia postpartum, le morti neonatali sono in larga maggioranza dovuta ad asfissia intrapartum e setticemia mentre la malaria insieme con polmoniti e diarrea rappresentano le principali cause di morte nei bambini al di sotto dei 5 anni”.

In electrical availability in particular, the hospital has one 150 kW diesel generator that is undersized in relation to the hospital’s needs. It consumes about 25 litres of diesel fuel per hour and, with the increased cost of fuel, it is difficult to sustain. Unfortunately, the diesel generator must be resorted to often due to the continuous interruptions in electric service from the national distribution network. In addition, use of the generator is mandatory for the operation of the autoclaves, x-ray equipment, operating room, submersible pump in the water well and the lifting pumps. With the increase in the price of raw materials for the production of electricity, the Government of Tanzania is continually reducing the electrical supply, especially to the outlying areas. It has reached the point where it is irregularly present, only for a few hours per day and rarely during the night. Due to this problem, the hospital must depend on the generator for both lighting and, above all, for hospital operations, especially the instruments in the operating room, the ultrasound, refrigerators, autoclaves, etc.”.

LA SITUAZIONE ATTUALE L’ospedale di Mikumi attualmente dispone di una forza lavoro pari a 103 unità. Di questi, 36 sono operatori sanitari qualificati. Dalla lettura dei dati di attività dal 2009 ad oggi, l’ospedale di Mikumi ha realizzato un notevole aumento del carico di lavoro. A fronte di questo, il sistema delle infrastrutture (luce, acqua, fognature) non si è adeguato. In particolare sul versante della disponibilità di corrente elettrica, l’ospedale dispone di 1 generatore diesel da 150 KW che è sovradimensionato rispetto ai bisogni dell’ospedale. Il consumo è di circa 25 litri di diesel all’ora e, con l’aumento del costo dei carburanti, la sua gestione è difficilmente sostenibile. Purtroppo il ricorso al generatore diesel è frequente per le continue interruzioni di fornitura elettrica dalla rete di distribuzione nazionale; inoltre l’uso del generatore è inderogabile per il funzionamento delle autoclavi, delle apparecchiature radiologiche, della sala operatoria, della pompa ad immersione del pozzo freatico e delle pompe di sollevamento. Con l’aumento dei prezzi delle materie prime per la produzione di energia elettrica, inoltre il Governo Tanzano sta sempre più riducendo la continuità della fornitura elettrica, specialmente nelle aree periferiche, al punto che questa è presente, in maniera irregolare, solo alcune ore al giorno e raramente nelle ore notturne. In virtù di tale problema, l’ospedale è costretto a dipendere dal generatore a gasolio, sia per l’illuminazione, sia, soprattutto, per il funzionamento dell’ospedale, in particolare per gli strumenti della sala operatoria, l’ecografo, i frigoriferi, le autoclavi, etc.”.

WHY THE PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM IS ESSENTIAL The diesel generator is not sustainable for the hospital structure, first of all due to the variability in the cost of fuel, which is continuously increasing in Tanzania, and for the high fuel consumption of this particular diesel generator. The result is that various medical activities, especially deliveries

and especially if at night, are performed without the possibility of using any electricity, by the light of oil lamps. Therefore, there is a need to ensure electricity for essential services 24 hours a day, to protect the feasibility and especially the quality of the health care that is provided. Second, electrical autonomy would be an element of stability and economic sustainability, detaching the hospital from the impact of fuel prices since the generator, at that point, would be a resource for the equipment that, when operating, requires a particular amount of power and voltage stability like the autoclave and the x-ray equipment, and would thus be used only on those occasions.

Il generatore a gasolio non risulta sostenibile per la struttura ospedaliera, prima di tutto per una questione di variabilità dei costi del carburante, in continuo aumento in Tanzania, e poi per l’altissimo consumo di carburante che ha questo generatore diesel. Il risultato è che diverse attività mediche, soprattutto i parti, specie se di notte, si svolgono senza la possibilità di usare energia elettrica, con l’utilizzo di lampade ad olio. Vi è quindi l’esigenza di garantire elettricità per i servizi essenziali 24 ore su 24, a tutela della fattibilità, e soprattutto della qualità, dell’assistenza sanitaria che viene fornita. In secondo luogo, l’autonomia elettrica rappresenterebbe un elemento di stabilità e sostenibilità economica, slegando l’ospedale dall’impatto del prezzo dei carburanti, dal momento che il generatore, a quel punto, rimane una risorsa per quelle attrezzature che, quando sono in funzione, richiedono una particolare potenza e stabilità di tensione, come l’autoclave e le apparecchiature radiologiche, e verrebbe quindi utilizzato solo in quelle occasioni.

THE PROJECT The final goal of the project is to contribute to the reduction of the mortality rate in the population in the Mikumi hospital service area through the purchase of solar panel equipment that will ensure the availability of electricity in the delivery room and other departments and services in the hospital. The project is consistent with the National Health Policy (NHP) and its operating component, the National Health Strategic Plan (NHSP) since it makes it easier to provide the services set forth in the Minimum Health Care Package (MHCP), activities that are indispensable in reducing morbidity and mortality in the country. The project is also in line with the three Millennium Development Goals, especially 4, 5 and 6. The project calls for the purchase, transport and installation of solar panels for the hospital. the final objective is to ensure electricity supply 24/7 in all departments and for all hospital services.

L’obiettivo finale è quello di garantire la fornitura di energia elettrica 24 ore su 24 in tutti i reparti e servizi ospedalieri. L’ospedale è suddiviso in diversi blocchi, e ciascuno può essere equipaggiato in maniera autonoma ed indipendente dagli altri, il che porta ad evitare il rischio che un singolo guasto possa compromettere l’intero sistema di erogazione di energia elettrica. In relazione ai servizi sanitari che l’ospedale offre, il progetto prevede una scala di urgenza per la installazione dell’impianto fotovoltaico. In altre parole l’intervento può essere realizzato in maniera progressiva, dando priorità a quelle strutture che hanno un impatto più rilevante sui servizi offerti ai malati, ovvero:

La scelta di appoggiarsi a fornitori in loco ha diverse ragioni. In primo luogo, ciò rappresenta una garanzia di poter ricevere assistenza in caso di problemi o guasti, avendo la possibilità di richiedere l’intervento dei tecnici che hanno installato il sistema, nonché la reperibilità in loco dei pezzi di ricambio. In secondo luogo, è un metodo per creare indotto economico a livello locale. I medici del CUAMM insieme con il Management Team della struttura saranno responsabili della organizzazione della formazione del personale tecnico responsabile della manutenzione dei pannelli solari dell’ospedale. La formazione del personale tecnico dell’ospedale per la manutenzione ordinaria sarà svolta da personale specializzato dipendente dalle ditte da cui le attrezzature sono state acquistate. MOTIVE

They give their all in respect for the fundamental human right to health and to make access to health care available to everyone, even groups of people living in the most isolated and remote areas. It began in 1950 with the goal being to train physicians for developing countries, under the name Cuamm (University College of Aspiring and Medical Missionaries). Medici con l’Africa Cuamm è la prima organizzazione non governativa (ong) in campo sanitario riconosciuta in Italia. Si spende per il rispetto del diritto umano fondamentale alla salute e per rendere l’accesso ai servizi sanitari disponibile a tutti, anche ai gruppi di popolazione che vivono nelle aree più isolate e marginali. E’ nata nel 1950 con lo scopo di formare medici per i paesi in via di sviluppo con il nome Cuamm (Collegio universitario aspiranti e medici missionari), negli anni ha scelto di operare particolarmente nel continente africano, da cui il nome Medici con l’Africa. Sempre nell’ottica di valorizzare il proprio territorio e l’offerta che una città come Verona può dare, Midac si fa promotrice quest’anno anche dei valori culturali, che da sempre danno carattere alla città scaligera, invitando i propri clienti ad una delle più grandi manifestazioni culturali della città: l’opera lirica in Arena. Per questo l’estate scorsa l’azienda di Soave ha scelto di essere partner dell’iniziativa promossa da Unicredit, intitolata “Invito all’Opera”, che ha visto lo svolgersi, durante la stagione lirica, di incontri pomeridiani in Gran Guardia, come preludio della serata operistica serale che si sarebbe poi tenuta in Arena.

La stagione lirica e sinfonica veronese, ormai nota in tutto il mondo per l’autorevolezza degli artisti e dei direttori di orchestra alternatisi sul suo palcoscenico, festeggia nel 2013 il suo centenario. Un traguardo che la Fondazione Arena di Verona festeggia con una stagione particolarmente ricca, grazie alla partecipazione di interpreti internazionali e all’atteso ritorno del Maestro Plácido Domingo, artista che ha percorso la storia del Festival Lirico dal 1969, con la sua interpretazione di Calaf, nella Turandot di Puccini, fino al 2012, anno in cui ha diretto l’Aida di Verdi, e che è nominato ora Direttore Artistico Onorario del Festival del Centenario.

The Verona opera and symphony season, now known throughout the world for the distinction of the artists and orchestra directors who crossed its stage, celebrates its centenary in 2013. It is a milestone that the Verona Arena Foundation celebrates with an especially vibrant season thanks to the participation of international stars and the long-awaited return of Maestro Plácido Domingo, the artist who can trace his history with the Opera Festival from 1969, when he played Cala in Puccini’s Turandot, to 2012 when he directed Verdi’s Aida and is now nominated as Honorary Artistic Director of the Centenary Festival.

Oltre ad Aida, di cui saranno presentate due versioni - la nuova produzione e la rievocazione dell’edizione del 1913 - il programma presenta anche Nabucco, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Rigoletto e Roméo et Juliette. Per festeggiare questa importante ricorrenza sono annunciate anche serate di Gala con la partecipazione di Plácido Domingo e Daniel Harding, oltre all’esecuzione della Messa da Requiem di Giuseppe Verdi nel bicentenario della sua nascita.

Più vicina a noi, nel tempo, è però la Stagione Sinfonica 2012-2013 che, sempre in occasione del centenario si apre con due palcoscenici: il tradizionale Teatro Filarmonico e, per la prima volta, il restaurato Teatro Ristori, con la proposta di 12 concerti in abbonamento, uno in più rispetto alla passata stagione. La Stagione Sinfonica è iniziata al Teatro Ristori venerdì 19 ottobre 2012 con un ciclo di quattro concerti dedicati ai tre compositori classicisti per eccellenza: Haydn, Mozart e Beethoven. E dal 12 gennaio 2013 gli appuntamenti sono ripresi al Teatro Filarmonico per concludersi domenica 5 maggio.

Closer to us in time, however, is the 2012-2013 Symphony Season, which for the centenary opens on two stages, the traditional Philharmonic Theatre and, for the first time, the restored Ristori Theatre. There are 12 concerts scheduled, one more in comparison to last season. The Symphony Season started at the Ristori Theatre on Friday, October 2012 with a cycle of four concerts dedicated to three classical composers par excellence: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. On January 12, 2013, concerts will resume at the Philharmonic Theatre and finish on Sunday, May 5th.

Hanno inaugurato la Stagione 4 concerti al Teatro Ristori legati dal fil rouge del “classicismo viennese”: sono stati proposti brani di Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart e Ludwig van Beethoven, che vedono protagonisti strumenti solisti e orchestra. Proseguono quindi 8 appuntamenti al Teatro Filarmonico che mantengono la formula strumenti solisti e orchestra; i programmi spaziano dal XIX secolo ai giorni nostri, con una particolare attenzione alle proposte dei compositori contemporanei italiani. Sul podio dell’Orchestra dell’Arena di Verona si succedono importanti direttori quali Henrik Nánási, Giacomo Sagripanti, Ola Rudner, Charles Olivieri-Munroe, Roman Brogli-Sacher, Paul Chiang, Xu Zhong, Silvio Viegas, Roberto Gianola, Gudni Emilsson, Pablo Mielgo e Francesco Lanzillotta. Accanto a loro solisti di rilievo, come la soprano Desirée Rancatore, Anna Tifu giovane violinista già affermata a livello internazionale, Gianluca Littera con la sua armonica a bocca, strumento popolare che raramente è presente nelle proposte concertistiche, e Li Biao percussionista che incanta le platee di tutto il mondo e che torna sul palco del Filarmonico dopo il grande successo riscosso lo scorso anno.

podio Roman Brogli-Sacher per un programma che va dall’800 al contemporaneo: le Scheggiature da Brahms di Alberto Colla rimandano al Doppio concerto in la minore per violino, violoncello e orchestra op. 102 di Johannes Brahms, in cui apprezziamo solisti Pavel Berman al violino e Julian Steckel al violoncello. Seguono due composizioni di Richard Strauss, il poema sinfonico Don Juan e Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche.

La settimana successiva, sabato 19 gennaio alle ore 20.00 con replica domenica 20 gennaio alle 17.00, Paul Chiang dirige l’Orchestra areniana in un programma eterogeneo che spazia dal contemporaneo di Invisible Acropolis del compositore marchigiano Carlo Boccadoro, al primo Novecento della Rapsodia per sax alto e orchestra di Claude Debussy, che vede solista Federico Mondelci, per tornare al XXI secolo con Four Pictures from New York di Roberto Molinelli e concludere con un salto nell’Ottocento con la Sinfonia n.4 in fa minore op. 36 di Pëtr Il’ič Čajkovskij.

Nel cuore del concerto in prima esecuzione italiana The rite of mountain, concerto per percussioni e orchestra op. 47 di Guo Wenjing, con solista l’applaudito Li Biao, percussionista che ha riscosso un grande successo al Teatro Filarmonico la passata stagione. In conclusione di serata la Sinfonia n. 9 in mi minore “Dal nuovo mondo” di Antonín Dvořák. La serata ha inizio con l’Ouverture da Ruslan and Ljudmila di Mikhail Glinka, per proseguire con una particolarità: protagonista a fianco dell’Orchestra dell’Arena uno strumento poco affrontato in brani sinfonici, l’armonica a bocca suonata da Gianluca Littera nel Concerto per armonica e orchestra di Heitor Villa-Lobos. Il Concerto di Gala venerdì 5 aprile 2013 alle ore 21.00 è l’anteprima del decimo appuntamento sinfonico al Teatro Filarmonico di sabato 6 aprile ore 20.00 e domenica 7 aprile alle 17.00. Il Maestro Gudni Emilsson conduce Boris Petruchansky al pianoforte insieme all’Orchestra areniana per il Concerto n. 2 in si bemolle maggiore per pianoforte e orchestra op. 83 di Johannes Brahms. A seguire la composizione contemporanea Dai calanchi di Sabbiuno di Fabio Vacchi e la popolare suite sinfonica Shéhérazade, op. 35 di Nikolai RimskijKorsakov, ispirata ai racconti delle Mille e una notte. Venerdì 26 aprile alle 20.00 e sabato 27 aprile alle 17.00 il direttore Pablo Mielgo dal podio del Filarmonico dirige Pacha Mama di Giorgio Battistelli. Sabato 16 marzo 2013 ore 21.00, con replica domenica 17 marzo alle 17.00, il Concerto Pasquale diretto da Stefano Ranzani: in programma Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten di Arvo Pärt, il Concerto in re maggiore per tromba, archi e continuo di Georg Philipp Telemann, con solista alla tromba Angelo Pinciroli, e Transitus animae per mezzosoprano, coro e orchestra di Lorenzo Perosi. These are followed by two compositions by Richard Strauss, the symphonic poem Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche. The following week, Saturday January 19 at 20:00 with a repeat on Sunday January 20 at 17:00, Paul Chiang directs the Arena orchestra in a diverse program ranging from the contemporary with Invisible Acropolis from the Marche composer Carlo Boccadoro to the beginning of the 20th century with the Rhapsody for alto sax and orchestra by Claude Debussy, with soloist Federico Mondelci, then returning to the 21st century with Four Pictures from New York by Roberto Molinelli and ends with a trip to the 19th century with Symphony no. 4 in F minor, op. 36 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Da trent’anni a Cologna Veneta si festeggia, pochi giorni prima di Natale, il principe dei dolci natalizi, il mandorlato, un prodotto dolciario tra i più tipici di Verona, che sta espandendo la propria fama in tutto il mondo. E state attenti, è questo il vero mandorlato, da non confondere come in molti fanno con il torrone. Esso si distingue per il suo colore bianco e la sua consistenza dura ma friabile, oltre che per le sue origini in epoca trecentesca e il suo nome, preso dalla cittadina che tuttora lo produce artigianalmente. Oggi, il mandorlato di Cologna Veneta, fatto esclusivamente con prodotti naturali, è diventato un prodotto ricercato per la sua unicità, un’occasione per esportare ancora una volta il sapore italiano all’estero, come conferma l’interesse “internazionale” dimostrato quest’anno al Salone del Gusto di Torino. Per capirne di più, abbiamo intervistato il presidente della Festa del Mandorlato di Cologna Veneta, Ivano Gallo, che ci racconta le origini di questo dolce natalizio e lo svolgersi della festa che sta attirando visitatori da ogni parte d’Italia, oltre che dall’estero.

For thirty years, Cologna Veneta has been celebrating the prince of Christmas sweets, nut brittle, a few days before Christmas. It is one of the most traditional confectionery products from Verona that is spreading its fame throughout the world. And be careful, this is true nut brittle; not to be confused with nougat like so many do. It is distinguished by its white colour and hard but brittle consistency as well as its origins that date back to the 14th century and its name, taken from the city that still produces it. Today Cologna Veneta nut brittle, made only with natural ingredients, has become a much sought after product for its uniqueness. It is an opportunity to once again export Italian flavour abroad, confirmed by the “international” interest shown this year at the Salone del Gusto in Turin. To learn more, we interviewed the president of the Cologna Veneta Nut Brittle Festival, Ivano Gallo, who tells us about the origin of this Christmas sweet and about the evolution of the festival that is attracting visitors from all over Italy and abroad. What is the secret to Cologna Veneta Nut Brittle? Our nut brittle is the original. It is a 100% natural confectionery product that uses only almonds, egg white, sugar and honey which are then worked by hand through the experience of the Cologna confectionery artisans. It is characterised by its intense almond flavour and the hard yet brittle consistency. The recipe is difficult to replicate because only those who

Where does this particular product come from? What are its origins? Its origins are ancient and connected with this history of Venice, in particular when Doge Michele Steno visited our city during the 14th century to resolve the conflicts for control of the waterways that were occurring in the Veneto region. The Doge, who resolved the disputes by placing Cologna Veneta under the protection of Venice while allowing the Cologna people the possibility to make laws, asked to people to prepare a special sweet that symbolised their land, so that he could take it to Venice. That was how nut brittle was first invented.

Le sue origini sono antichissime e legate alla storia di Venezia, in particolare alla visita alla nostra città che il Doge Michele Steno fece in epoca Trecentesca, per risolvere le lotte sul controllo delle vie d’acqua che si facevano in terra veneta. Il Doge, che risolse le dispute ponendo Cologna Veneta sotto l’egida di Venezia, pur lasciando ai Colognesi la possibilità di legiferare, chiese ai cittadini di preparare un dolce particolare, che rispecchiasse la loro terra, da portare a Venezia. Fu così che uno speziale inventò per la prima volta il mandorlato.

What activity does the production of nut brittle bring to the city today? The production of nut brittle currently involves a dozen companies that in turn employ many people in the area on a seasonal basis. Working the nut brittle dough is done completely by hand while wrapping and packaging is done by mechanical means. This special process still requires a large amount of labour.

Qual è oggi l’indotto che la produzione di mandorlato porta alla città? La produzione di mandorlato coinvolge attualmente una decina di aziende che impiegano a loro volta stagionalmente molte persone del territorio. La lavorazione della cotta di mandorlato è eseguita completamente a mano, mentre per il procedimento di incartamento e confezionamento vengono utilizzati impianti meccanici. Questa particolare lavorazione richiede tutt’oggi una forte componente di manodopera.

Tell us about the Nut Brittle Festival that is held each year in December. How many visitors does it attract and what is involved? The Nut Brittle Festival, which celebrated its 28th anniversary this past year, is an event that now welcomes about 50 thousand visitors per day. It takes place in a fairground of over 30 thousand square metres and involves all the streets and squares in Cologna Veneta. The fair is organised in concentric circles. The centre of the city hosts the historical nut brittle manufacturers and the village dedicated to traditional crafts, where the old crafts are performed by craftsmen in period costume. This is the nucleus of the fair that then becomes the nativity scene. Surrounding the old village is the gastronomic park where traditional Verona products come to celebrate the prince of desserts, nut brittle. The next circle houses the large market of hobbyists and associations that offer artisanal products and Christmas decorations. And finally, surrounding everything else is a market area with various types of products. In all there are three hundred producers and associations taking part.

Ci parli della Festa del Mandorlato che si tiene ogni anno a dicembre. Quanti visitatori richiama e in cosa consiste? La Festa del Mandorlato, arrivata lo scorso anno alla sua ventottesima edizione, è un appuntamento che oramai raccoglie circa 50mila visitatori al giorno. Si svolge su un’area fieristica di oltre 30mila metri quadrati e coinvolge tutte le vie e le piazze di Cologna Veneta. La manifestazione è organizzata a cerchi concentrici: nel cuore della cittadina vengono ospitati i produttori storici del mandorlato e il villaggio dedicato ai mestieri antichi, dove si svolgono le antiche lavorazioni artigianali con figuranti in abiti d’epoca. Questo è il nucleo della fiera che si trasformerà poi in presepe vivente. A contornare l’antico villaggio c’è sempre il parco gastronomico, dove i prodotti tipici veronesi vengono a far festa al principe dei dessert, appunto il mandorlato. This is a complex machine, who has the burden and honour of managing it? The festival was started by the City Council as a small event that has grown over the years and been passed on to the Fair Organisation, of which I am the president. I can tell you that it is a very large machine and has rather large expenses. I have been working at it since 2006 along with the entire network of about one hundred volunteers who fortunately help with the work before, during and after the fair, with passion and dedication. It is an event that is deeply felt in our city and thanks to everyone’s help, continues to grow. For us, this is an opportunity to also promote our traditional local food products like red radicchio and potatoes and thus promote our entire area. In the area dedicated to food products, we offer traditional dishes with tasting menus at various cost levels or by a la carte menu.

addobbi natalizi. Alla fine, a contornare il tutto, un’area mercatale con varie tipologie di prodotti. In tutto saranno trecento i produttori e le associazioni che interverranno. Si tratta di una macchina complessa, chi ha l’onere e l’onore di gestirla? La festa è partita dall’Amministrazione Comunale e nasce come piccola manifestazione che si è ingrandita negli anni, passando in gestione dell’Ente Fiera, di cui io sono presidente. Posso dire che oggi è una macchina molto vasta per dimensione e che ha dei costi piuttosto importanti. Dal 2006 presto la mia opera come tutta la fitta rete di circa un centinaio di volontari che fortunatamente assistono, con passione e dedizione, i lavori prima, durante e dopo la fiera. È una manifestazione molto sentita dal paese, che grazie all’aiuto di tutti continua a crescere. Questa per noi è occasione per promuovere anche i prodotti tipici della gastronomia locale, come il radicchio rosso e la patata, e per promuovere quindi tutto il nostro territorio. Nell’area dedicata ai prodotti gastronomici proponiamo piatti tradizionali con menù di degustazione a vari livelli di costo, oppure con menù alla carta.

How do you promote the event? Besides traditional promotions, through press conferences organised with the Province of Verona, we started a new activity that organises actual tourist visits to our city. These are packages that provide bus transport from other Italian cities, a visit to the Civic Museum, one of the richest in the Veneto and the tasting menu from the Nut Brittle Festival. Last year 660 people arrived in this manner from Cologna, entire groups from cities like Cuneo, Pordenone, Udine, Riva del Garda, who were then able to get to know our products and our city.

Is there a special moment to the festival or, better, what is the key moment? During the festival, we organised the delivery of the city of Cologna Gold Medal that is given to a person who has distinguished himself throughout the world, thus also honouring the name of our city. Last year the prize was given to ninety-one year old Antonio Tomba, Corporal Major Carrista, veteran of El Alamein, tank enthusiast and restorer, a reference point for the Cologna Veneta War Museum as well as consultant for some directors who made movies of that battle. The prize was given to him on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein. Our goal is to make our product and our territory a culture, by awarding and talking about our excellence, in all senses of the word.

Durante la festa abbiamo indetto la consegna della Medaglia d’Oro Città di Cologna che viene consegnata ad un personaggio che si è distinto nel mondo, onorando quindi anche il nome della nostra cittadina. Lo scorso anno il premio è dato al novantunenne Antonio Tomba, Caporal Maggiore Carrista, reduce della battaglia di El Alamein, appassionato e restauratore di carri armati, punto di riferimento del museo di guerra di Cologna Veneta, nonché consulente per alcuni registi che hanno messo in scena quella stessa battaglia. Il premio viene a lui insignito in occasione del 70° anniversario della battaglia di El Alamein. Lo scopo che ci prefissiamo è quello di fare cultura del nostro prodotto e del nostro territorio, premiando e parlando delle nostre eccellenze, in tutti i sensi.
