Curator’s Statement The 3rd Annual Spotlight exhibition showcases the urban images of five local San Francisco Bay Area artists: Charles Anselmo, Steven Goldband & Ellen Konar, Ari Salomon, and Leo VanMunching. The exhibition shows a broad range of photographic styles, with all of the photographers approaching their urban subject matter uniquely. Arc Fine Arts Consulting is established as a natural extension of the mission of Arc Gallery and Studios. Arc is dedicated to showcasing and promoting emerging and established artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here we are blessed with some of the most prestigious art schools in the country. On a per capita basis San Francisco boasts a higher percentage of working artists than any other city in the country. The opportunity for local collectors and businesses to build collections which tap into and support these communities is unparalleled. Charles Anselmo Within the fabric of populous urban environments there persist abandoned places which exist tenuously as inconvenient symbols of an earlier time, and which prompt complex questions concerning design, intention, social motivation and waste. These silent architectural icons are bestrewn with the uncertainties of the past, effectively deconstructing the man-made environment as a place of emotional permanence. I try to evaluate the strange dissonances of this forgotten urban landscape. The artifacts in my photographs indicate a rich and compelling archaeology of loss and discreetly suggest a visual compression of time, memory, and the past. The images address issues of transition and history, but they are also concerned with the role of the human witness in environments that have come to reveal the metaphorical richness disclosed with a hidden world of remnants. Articulating their own visually inherent narratives, these disparate, fragmented irrealities remain disconnected from their original identities. The architectural ghosts within this theme have led me to explore the uniquely dualistic status of urban visual culture, and to record how an insistently human presence tends to prevail at derelict sites to yield scenes saturated with disquieting contradictions. Images of peaceful disconnection are instilled with a pervasive sense of human activity and grand design, but also reveal a textured, deconstructed landscape of historical fragments and skeletal details that reference the way in which memory changes perception as we reconsider the past. My images are formally linked by the many visual elements and textures of broken structure and interiors, but ultimately this work is more explicitly concerned with the intersection of place memory and social context. Working exclusively with medium and large format film, my portfolios embrace an attempt to fuse an aesthetic form with a social idea as a way of interpreting the past, photographically captured in the warm palette of decay.

Steve Goldband & Ellen Konar Forms and Fragments Forms and Fragments presents unlikely objects of beauty from the urban landscape. The tonality of the images is muted, the light soft and embracing. In some instances beauty derives from the intimacy of objects presented in isolation. In others, multiple, distant views are presented alongside one other as if to insist the viewer see them in a larger context than she could possibly get from a physical point of view. The effect we hope the viewer to experience is accentuated by the geometries and light of the moment of capture. The images were captured in three countries over a five-year period. The two triptychs were developed from a series of images captured in Naoshima, a singular remote island in the inland sea of Japan noted for its contemporary art installations. They contrast a natural landscape with man-made urban materials and geometries. These works are printed on archival inkjet medium, mounted on dibond, and face-mounted with Plexiglas without a visual frame, so as to integrate seamlessly with their current environment. Two of the four individual images are based in Beijing, China during a time of transition. In case of emergency is the Chinese text next to a simple rope, hung in the “big cat� house at the Beijing Zoo. Window was made at a maintenance building nearby. Rings and Hung Up were both taken in India, the former in a Jaipur workshop, the latter in a small, non-electrified factory in Cochin that makes outdoor mats from coir fiber for export.

Steve Goldband and Ellen Konar, Photographers Since 2009, Steve and Ellen have collaborated on most of their photographic projects. Steve’s keen eye or geometry, formal structure and texture pervade his work in urban landscapes. Ellen’s fascination with color, balance and dynamic portraiture have broadened and added depth to their collective perspective. Ari Salomon I am interested in the way photographs abstract space and time; how they can capture cycles of construction and deconstruction, and evidence of people living or just passing through. Together, the images present questions about cultural authenticity and what makes one location unique from any other. This series focuses on Japanese urban industrial architecture. The pictures are composed of individual photographs, shot in sequence, and then stitched together on a computer. Some are 360 degrees and some are less. Some present a vertical view that includes ground and sky together. I love the poetic relationship presented by making art about the grand qualities of mundane buildings — especially in a large-scale, panoramic format. Layers of history are brought to life in this wide angle of view as the eye compares the relationship of buildings and the spaces between them. The viewer discovers unexpected juxtapositions and whimsical details.

Leo VanMunching The photographs in this exhibit are part of a larger project to document the architecture, landscape and people of San Francisco during the most pervasive changes the city has seen in decades. They were made with a tripodmounted bellows camera that uses 8” x 10” sheet film, a device that cannot capture motion but renders objects in repose with great clarity. Though deeply ingrained in the popular imagination, the San Francisco of “Vertigo” and “Bullitt,” The Joy Luck Club and The Maltese Falcon, the Beat Poets and the Summer of Love is rapidly being transformed by ever-larger boom-and-bust cycles in the tech industry and its close cousin, the real estate market. The famous landmarks mostly remain, though the vistas are gradually shrinking in the face of construction, while the social landscape increasingly resembles that of Manhattan, where earlier influxes of wealth led to the gradual exodus of its middle- and lower-class inhabitants. How far down this path San Francisco will travel, how soon, and with what consequences for its fabled ethnic diversity and the character of its neighborhoods remain open questions.

rc Fine Arts Consulting was established as a natural extension of the mission of Arc Gallery and Studios. Arc is dedicated to showcasing and promoting emerging and established artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since establishing Arc in 2010, the Gallery and Project Gallery have provided exhibition opportunities for over 500 mostly local artists. Our artist studios are the working home for 12 outstanding local artists. Additionally, our complex houses Kearny Street Workshop, a local multi-disciplinary Pan-Asian arts organization and our gallery has hosted numerous exhibitions for local arts organizations. Our goal has been to foster community and to provide an arc between our vibrant Bay Area its communities and Bay Area art enthusiasts, collectors and business communities.
