Photography & Digital Storytelling People + Place This is a look into my travels and experiences. The world has stuck with me, but not as much as the people I have seen and met. Each photo represents a moment in a time in place that I had the priviledge to see. My abilities in Photography are only aided by fluency in digital design products and the principles used in graphic design. To me, essentially all design can be distilled down into communication. In photography and graphic design alike each take a nuenced approach to communicating a messege. I believe that Architecture follows this same principle by communicating ideas through spatial design, cultural awareness, and the preservation of historical precedence as well as countless other factors all aiding in the design process.

Landscape Design There are two landscape plans on pages 10 -13. These were done as a part of a class on landscape design through the horticulture department of a local community college. These plans represent my first academic persuit of design

Non-silver Photographic Processes I set out to create a set of images that highlights the beauty of natural botanic forms through alternative photographic processes. I wanted to capture the raw, natural, organic form of each specimen and then use various photographic processes to accentuate the natural movement. I utilized my knowledge of both botany and studio photography to capture raw but controlled images and then used the digital negatives in multiple nonsilver photographic processes. Each process brought with it a unique set of challenges as well it’s own nuanced approach. No two images Ever emerged the same. This project taught patience in process and I learned the importance of iteration in design.

Right: These images were used as the base for the following processes. Taken in the studio and often processed through Photoshop to adjust temperature or add contrast filters before being printed onto lithographic film.

Location/ North Carolina Medium/ 35mm black and white film Reason/ Academic Process/ Darkroom Processing, Cyanotype, Gum Bichromate Date/ fall 2013

Top: This cyanotype triptych was the product of multiple exposures. The goal with this piece was to get greater image density and contrast. The three different sheets made it easier to align under the lithofilm. Above: A successful Cyanotype print.

16

Top: This is the same image, one was a negative and one was a positive printed onto lithographic film. After completing the Cyanotype process, both were then toned in black tea, resulting in a gray-black color. Right: This is a cyanotype exposure sheet. It was used to test the exposure time of a batch of paper. Before making an exposure the exposure Potassium ferricyanide and Ferric ammonium citrate (green) are mixed with water separately. The two solutions are then blended together in equal parts and applied to the chosen paper. Left: an experimental layering of processes. The base is a cyanotype and atop that using the same negative a gum bichromate exposure. The layering was repeated three times to yield a densely contrasted image

Location/ North Carolina Digital photo printed on lithographic film Reason/ Academic Process/ Darkroom processing/VanDyke Brown Date/ fall 2013 The following set of images were made through a process called VanDyke Brown. This process involves painting a solution of Ferric Ammonium Citrate, Tartaric Acid, Silver Nitrate & Distilled water on bristol board. And an exposure time of around 3-5 minutes. Above: These were the clearest images showing the greatest light-to-dark contrast. Making them the best examples of Van Dyke Brown prints. Top Right: This was the base image used for all of the shown prints. Bottom Right: These images show the variation in contrast that is frequently found in this process. Also, it shows the various ways in which the solution can be applied in a painterly, artistic fashion.

Mixed-Media Design Projects

The following projects were created using a variety of medias and dimensions. The graphic design and editorial design were group projects which I lead and managed. The image on the following page was a project in a photography class; I was assigned to create a scene from a point in history and photograph it to look like real life considering factors such as context, setting, environment and mood. The most time consuming part was the bench made from balsa wood. Each of these represents my ability to think in dimensionally and lead in a creative setting.

Sole Hope Re-Brand & Visual Identity

Location/ Uganda & North Carolina Medium/ Print/Web Reason/ Professional Position/ Co-Designer Date/ Winter 2013

This was a proposed rebrand of an NGO in Asheville operating in Uganda. Sole Hope deals mainly with public health and patients affected by a parisite called “jiggers” (Tungus penetrans) The idea behind this concept was to incorporate a combination of traditional african patterns, colors, and watercolor texture to give a hopeful, colorful, expressive, empowering and African feel. The logo was changed from a bi-color, grungy feel to a clean black logo maintaining the brandmark and desired emphasis on the word “hope.” This project was rejected at the time by the board of the organization
