ART & SOUL MAGAZINE

B R I G H T E R DAY

by BRYSON MANUEL

Editor's Letter

The Student Media Board finds deep pleasure in showcasing every single artwork that has made it into this Spring 2021 Edition of the Honolulu Community College Art & Soul Magazine. This magazine is a collection of various works created by alumni & current students of the Honolulu CC Community. First off, I'd like to thank the rest of the gang on the Student Media Board. I've known Kris & Allan for quite some time now. Getting offered a position at SMB and being able to work alongside such good friends during my last stint in college has been a godsend. Even among the Student Life staff, we three are called "single brain cell", as if we share one mind. Lastly, I'd like to thank the entire Student Life & Development team at Honolulu Community College. The women of Student Activities, Faith, Jonna, & Karla were a pleasure to work with and get to know over the plethora of events and activities planned throughout the school year. To top it all off, I'd never known I'd be under the gracious, motherly care of our Student Life & Development Advisor, Ms. Emily. You all were nothing but a family to me. Despite the short time I've gotten to know you all, I couldn't be more proud to have been a part of such a wonderful team. -This magazine is dedicated to the students of Honolulu Community College COV E R A R T F R OM WO R KS F E AT U R E D I N A R T & S O U L S P R I N G 2020 https://issuu.com/michaelleidemann/docs/art_soulofficial

I am a new student at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College and have taken on a heav y load this semester. Mishka unfortunately lays next to me for hours on end while I study which is why at least once a week I owe it to her to go on a crazy adventure.

SPRING EDITION 2021

by MADISON DIFATO My idea behind this clown was not to showcase everybody's worst nightmare. I did not want to just play around with white face paint and add a red nose. I wanted to allow conventional, over exaggerated characteristics of a clown to become human. I wanted to create a clown that belongs to an entirely separate sub species of human. In this way, the pale sickly complexion is a trait distinctly clown. The red hair and swollen red nose is also inherently clown. Of course after creating this, it was absolutely terrifying. (Seen in first stages of makeup) So, to top it off, it seemed necessary to then add the clown paint. -Madison Difato

JUST KEEP GOING

DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION

When COVID hit, it hit me hard. I lost both my jobs and was forced to vacate my place of residence. I had a hard time dealing with it and I needed some sort of outlet. So I took up a class in digital design and I learned that I could pour all my frustration and stress onto a digital canvas and it would make me somewhat more sane. When I created my "Just Keep Going" piece I was listening to a lot of Tupac for inspiration, at the time I was going through a depression stage. All I could think of was how my mom would always tell me to just keep going. That things will always get better. She was right. -Sam Famui

Cultivate by Chasity Crosby (2019)

There will be days you forget who you are. You'll long for the girl you used to be, but you've already made it this far. Some days, you might not even try. You'll close your eyes against that bright, blinding light. But the seeds that your grandmother planted will be a shade for you. And the seeds that your mother sow will be a lesson for you. "Will you water them, baby? Will you trim back their weeds? Will you let them show you how to be strong and stand tall, not let those bad ones take her leaves? When you're pulled this way and that and you don't know which side you're on, look up, look up! There will be a light that comes through that canopy of love. Oh, look up, look up to see the truth. It has always been inside of you."

ILLUSTRIOUS SUNRISE

LYRICS & MUSIC

by R YA N P E R E Z M U S I C

Illustrious Sunrise

Illustrious Sunrise is about the awakening to one's clarity. As we lay our heads down to rest we allow our worries to be turned to wonder and as we wake we are filled with abundance. With every sunrise comes a new start and it's up to us to CHOOSE our own expansion and growth. -Ryan Perez

As the sun sets in the west I lay my head down for some rest Prepping for the best, changes to come With the Illustrious Sunrise Oh illustrious sunrise Watching the rise in your eyes Spirit and soul shiftving inside Prosperity, a natural high Illustrious Sunrise

Paramount growth is in the gray The gray is only a temporary stay Let Affirmations lead the way, change will come With the illustrious sunrise Oh illustrious sunrise Watching the rise in your eyes Spirit and soul shifting inside Prosperity, a natural high Illustrious Sunrise Every successful stay within the dark Allows my mind body and spirit to embark On a journey to Rise and elevate self love And Shed light on believing I am enough Oh illustrious sunrise Watching the rise in your eyes Spirit and soul shifting inside Prosperity, a natural high Illustrious Sunrise

50TH STATE

ART & MUSIC b y NAI BOI (FT. HANAPAKS)

Being born and raised in Hawaii I developed a very strong bond and connection to this special place I call home. I wanted to express how I felt growing up here in Hawaii and I knew it was a feeling many other can relate too. Especially for those from Hawaii who are currently in the mainland or out of country. This song is sure to make them miss home. When I wrote 50th State I wanted to make sure it was something anyone and everyone from Hawaii could connect to and send listeners on a trip down memory lane. Those who are born and raised within Hawaii are all privileged with calling Hawaii home and the beauty that comes with this place. I hope this song can remind others how privileged we are to call this place home. Along with that you should ask yourself. How can we keep Hawaii beautiful and up hold the title as the state of aloha?

"Much love and aloha to readers" Sincerely, Nai Boi (Nainoa Ho)

Goodbye

VARIOUS WORKS

POETRY

by KRISTOFEL ABELLA

You always said to find happiness That’s when I left to find it But when you left my life forever You never said goodbye Five thousand miles we were apart Surrounded by open sea As tears flowed down my cheeks It only filled the deep ocean basin As night and day passes by My love for you will never die If love alone could have saved you You never would have left my side In life I loved you dearly

Last Time As the ones you love gather around The sight of fear kept me at bay Though you waited in agony I never came to say goodbye I thought about so many things As I slept weeping through the night Oh how much pain I was in At least yours has passed

In death I do the same You held a place in my heart That no one will ever fill As memories come flooding back My heart starts to break I guess that’s what happens When you never said goodbye

I struggled with my selfish thoughts As I wanted you to stay That I may at least tell you a story Or perhaps say I’m sorry I wish I could fly For you were thousands of miles away And seat by your side One last time 33

THE ONE

LYRICS & MUSIC

by L.A. THE TRUTH

A song I wrote towards the end of 2019. Experiencing probably the most difficult time in my life to date, having been in the culinary industry for 15 years making music was my therapy. Left my position at a renowned hotel here in Hawaii to pursue more out of life. Taught myself how to use Garage Band, composed the song in the moment of intense emotion and 2 years later I'm enrolled in the Audio Engineering Program and put the track out on streaming platforms with help of some professional friends. An ode to following a dream and making my mark as a Pacific Islander in the Hip Hop/ Rap genre.

-L.A. The Truth (Lance Aldan)

Lyrics I am the One Well at least that's what my momma said Up early on my grind Left my childhood behind I am the One That put this family back on that track I am the One Sixteen clocked in an neva looked back But don't you get it confused Cuz you could be the One too My generation no youth We was raising kids while in school Then they wonder why we cold Heart frost bit like eskimos Gotta chip on my shoulda' Let it explode Supa Nova I am the One Greatness within my matrix I am the One Even tha' ninety-nine gon' deny it I am the One Dis that John Wick on yo' false idols Tidal These Waves Only a name ya' take ta' that grave I am the One Greatness within my matrix I am the One Even tha' ninety-nine gon' deny it I am the One Dis that John Wick on yo' false idols Tidal These Waves Only a name ya' take ta' that grave

Life an' times Boy you live a life like mine Constantly I gotta question Why Like Why did I survive Why am I alive Neva had the chance ta' say Goodbye Blood, sweat, an' tears Got comfortable wit my fears I was on my own Worked so much I neva' was home I put that food right on my plate Had ta' put that shirt right on my back If she didn't love me It'd get ugly Leave me just like that An' out of that mud They neva' thought I'd climb I hear all the whispers But I pay them no mind It's been game time Boy I been all in Ya these colors on my skin They cover scars from my sins An' if you ain't about that bank They you ain't really 'bout that Win I speak and watch they head spin I only break bread wit my Kin Watch how I move Stealth leave no clues When it's green light My aim right I hit 'em up with dat Truth

Constantly I gotta question Why Like Why did I survive Why am I alive Neva had the chance ta say Goodbye I am the One Greatness within my matrix I am the One Even tha' ninety-nine gon' deny it I am the One Dis dat John Wick on yo' false idols Tidal These Waves Only a name ya' take ta' that grave I am the One Greatness within my matrix I am the One Even tha' ninety-nine gon' deny it I am the One Dis dat John Wick on yo' false idols Tidal These Waves Only a name ya' take ta' that grave

Life an' times Boy you live a life like mine

SPRING EDITION 2021

EXCERPT FROM "ON MY OWN" LITERATURE

by JONNA "Suddenly, he pulls me toward him and embraces me. I allow myself to enjoy this moment and then I slowly push myself off of him. He was leaving the next day to return home, and he was only here for work, not for me. I know that this wasn’t going to last forever, but why don’t I want him to leave? Even after not seeing or talking to each other for months, we clicked right away. I think in some weird way, the universe wanted to give us one more chance. As my final gesture to him, I drove him to where he was staying. After I parked the car and turned it off, we both got out of the car to give each other one last hug. He reaches for me, arms open, with a glum look on his face. He pulls me in holding me tight. “You know how I feel about you”, he said holding me in his arms. I turned my face upwards towards his with my eyebrows narrowed. “No, what?” I feel his embrace slowly tighten. “I still love you”, looking down at me with the same expression in his eyes. I recognize it’s the same look he gave me when he broke my heart the first time."

Editor's Final Note I've always had a love-hate relationship with art. I like to see the expression of art from others yet I've never kept the drive to pursue my own art and take the time to improve my art skills. I've relegated art to a mere pastime. Yet, working on this magazine has rekindled my fascination for creativity. I really hope that this magazine has done every single submitted work in this publication it's due justice. The magazine was in the peak of its production in the middle of a global pandemic & arguably the busiest time of the year for the members of the Student Media Board. This edition was the first and most likely the last time I'd have my hand in compiling such a broad spectrum of creative works. Spring 2021 marks my final semester at HonCC. There's no knowing If I'd ever come back and continue my education at this campus. Nevertheless, the Student Media Board and the creation of this very magazine have given me such great memories and quite invaluable experiences that I'll hold dearly. Art is an expression of our thoughts, our imagination, and our soul. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, and, Stay Creative! Passionately, Bryson Manuel Editor-in-Chief

Art & Soul is published by the Student Media Board of Honolulu Community College. The magazine is produced and edited entirely by Honolulu CC students and is financed through the student media fee.
