EDITOR’S BIT B

inds loosen in summer. Restrictions seem to fade and schedules are left behind. It’s during these unhurried months where we can focus on having fun; in the beer garden, playing golf or exploring new towns and shops. In our ode to summer, we have the best of bohemian hair trends, tips on nourishing your skin and staying hydrated with facial mists and a spa trip that’s bound to get you prepping for your beachside getaway. There’s plenty to do in the three counties this month, wonderful exhibitions at both the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and the New Art Gallery Walsall. Chateau Impney Hotel has some exciting events coming up this summer and the Drotwich Food Festival is set to have another successful year. Our front cover this month showcases the beautiful huts at Riverside Shepherd Huts, the bespoke rustic hideaways you can design yourself. We’re also introducing Kozihaus, the cool interiors shop and coffee bar in Malvern with innovative design house products and traditional ideas reinvented.

Michael Abu-Zalaf Editor-in-Chief

Of course, we’re celebrating our dads this month and we have some great gift ideas and suggestions for experience days and nights out. You can thank us later. ...using seasonal local produce helps us create dishes with real personality‌ Tom Robinson - Head Chef at The Forest

All our 3 pubs are full of character. As Head Chef of The Forest I feel strongly that the food needs to be full of character too. In France, you can walk into an unassuming auberge in a small village and experience really good cooking‌and we want our customers to enjoy that same experience. In fact, we call our style of cuisine Anglo-French because it combines the best of both. The really English bit are the seasonal ingredients which we source from local suppliers whenever we can. I hope when people visit any one of our pubs they take away fond memories, of the friendliness, the good drink and of course a delicious meal. Discover our three pubs, each devoted to delicious food and drink in characterful surroundings. Welsh Road, Offchurch, Leamington Spa, Warks; CV33 9AQ. Tel: 01926 425801 www.thestagatoffchurch.com

A RUSTIC RETREAT

Embrace the outdoors with Riverside Shepherd Huts Hannah Griffiths

T

raditionally used as a late night refuge for farmers and shepherds during sheep-raising and lambing periods in the 19th and 20th century, the shepherd hut is not the first thing that springs to mind when you consider adding extra space to your home or business but thanks to the team at Riverside Shepherd Huts the shepherd hut is back and better than ever. Combining rustic charm with a multitude of uses and fitted with everything from underfloor heating to micro-kitchens, the modern day shepherd hut is an eco-friendly space solution. Based on the border between Worcestershire and Warwickshire, Riverside Shepherd Huts is a small, independent, family-run business that combines skills with vision to build and create a unique shepherd hut just for you. Diversifying their huts to suit each individual, the team at Riverside Shepherd Huts has worked with each customer to provide huts for a number of different businesses including extra rooms for B&Bs, farms and extra office space. The phrase ‘you dream it, we build it’ really is at the heart of everything the Riverside Shepherd Huts team does. Working closely with you from concept to completion Dave and Jeannie pride themselves on catering to each individual customer’s inspiration allowing you to make the decision on each element, no matter how big or small; from colour schemes to layouts, windows to door handles and even down to the light switches, every decision is yours. Each hut comes with a 30 year guarantee for the full steel frames, the chassis and cast iron wheels, giving you peace of mind from day one. The walls and roof and floor are also insulted, keeping your hut warm in the winter and cool in the summer; it’s the perfect hideaway whatever the weather. Delivery is never an issue either as the huts can be craned in if access becomes a problem and no distance is too far as Dave and Jeannie have delivered huts up to Scotland and right into the south of France. To date Dave and Jeannie’s portfolio includes home offices, holiday accommodation, honeymoon huts, play huts and even dog huts. If you’d like to see the huts for yourself give Dave and Jeannie a call to make an appointment to see them at their cottage, where they’re happy to show you around and provide you with all the information you need. TEXTURE THIS Fuzzy and undone for summer Lucinda Bunn

T

his summer’s hair trends are inspired by the sun, sand and surf. What else? We’re looking for more laidback styles, easy updos and blended colour. Aesthetics Hair Salon, Solihull, has all the latest on SS14 cut and colour.

Mixed textures Make for sleek shellacked centre-parted hair before leaving the rest to dry wild. This look is great for a finished style without the hassle so you can just as easily recreate this look at the beach or before a night out with a coral lip. Ethereal braids Otherworldly avant-garde twists and ties. The messy structure resembles a bohemian peasant style. For inspiration, take a look at Alberta Ferretti’s catwalk looks, styled by Redken’s chief session stylist, Guido. Leave hair to dry naturally and loosely braid. Stone Poneys Ponytails can be sleek this season, with height at the crown for a playful summer look. If you want something softer, add texture with Kerastase Powder Bluff; great for keeping your grips in place. In true folk-style, you could add flowers or accents like headbands. Even if you go for the sleek, severe styling this season, make your pony stand out. Honey tones Ombré colour is still very much on trend. Most of us will be thinking of going lighter for summer and the gradual ombré look allows you to do so without committing to a full-head of blonde highlights. Instead, soften your colour with honey hues, lightening and framing the face for a flattering shade update. Mother-of-pearl mermaid Think lilacs, green and pink, muted with a pearlised finish. The Aesthetics team are creating a watercoloured pastel look for lived-in colour. Cool blondes can experiment with lighter tones whilst ashy brunettes make for darker, richer hues. 347 Warwick Road Solihull West Midlands B91 1BQ 0121 707 8866 www.aesthetics-solihull.com

TAKE TIME TO LUXURIATE Menzies Welcombe Spa Lucinda Bunn

A

beautiful destination retreat that’s perfect for an overnight stay is the Menzies Welcombe Spa. Tucked away on the hotel grounds, this luxurious escape has all the features of a modern spa with the quiet and tranquillity you can only experience in the countryside.

facial and the aromatherapy massage. The Welcombe Spa specialises in Clarins and Elemis products and therapists use the two ranges for all of their treatments. The Welcombe also has its own nail bar where Jessica and GELeration manicures and pedicures are popular with spa-goers.

The spa itself attracts hotel guests as well as local gym members and those looking for a well-deserved break. And that’s certainly what the Welcombe Spa offers. With light lunches and a coffee bar, you can read and meet with friends before you head into the spa for treatments and relaxation. Choose from salads and sandwiches, herbal teas and soft drinks, all freshly prepared using quality ingredients.

We chose the chakra stone massage and the Elemis fruit active glow facial. The chakra stone massage uses smooth and flat, heated rocks to realign the chakra points of the body. The heat from the stones is deeply relaxing and helps warm tight muscles, leaving you feeling soft and supple. This technique also works warm almond oil into the skin where the Basalt stones are expertly glided over your skin, breaking down tension, nourishing and restoring wellbeing.

The first class facilities are designed to stimulate your senses, with self-activating foot spas and heated loungers. The rejuvenating thermal experience rooms cannot be missed; the Finnish sauna, a caldarium, laconium and a tepidarium. Of course, a spa trip isn’t a spa trip without a treatment and the Welcombe Spa has an extensive list to choose from; the herbal lavender repair facial, the total glow self-tanning treatment, the lifting line smoother

For the fruit active glow facial you can choose between Elemis or Clarins products before a bespoke treatment plan is designed according to your skin type. For sensitive skin, the soothing chamomile cleanser deep cleans and removes impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.

The gentle rose exfoliator contains rose, cucumber and jojoba bead to leave skin smooth and soft before the fruit active rejuvenating mask restores your natural glow; perfect for a summer burst of dewy freshness. The facial concludes with recovery capsules which detoxify and renew the skin’s elasticity and some maximum moisture day cream to hydrate and protect. Each facial is different so products are chosen specifically to work with your skin for gorgeous results. If you’re looking for an indulgent spa experience, bespoke treatments and a chance to while away the afternoon in a level-decked swimming pool and outdoor vitality pool, look no further than the Menzies Welcombe Spa. Surrounded by beautiful parkland, it’s an oasis of peace and restorative tranquillity. Warwick Road Stratford-upon-Avon Warwickshire CV37 0NR 01789 413810 www.menzieshotels.co.uk

moothing out lumps and bumps without surgery – sounds too good to be true, right? But that’s exactly what CoolSculpting delivers. You can be treated with the CoolSculpting technology on practically any part of the body – podgy thighs, plump flanks and stubborn paunches. So this summer, you won’t need to reach for cover-ups and kaftans, you’ll want to show off your sculpted, smooth curves instead. If you’ve got stubborn bulges that diet and exercise just won’t shift, then CoolSculpting will change your life. CoolSculpting is the only non-surgical alternative to liposuction clinically approved by the FDA*. Using revolutionary technology, CoolSculpting targets and freezes fat cells. CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to target and crystallise these cells before they are naturally eliminated from your body. The procedure is totally safe. You’ll see the initial results after 30 days and final results after 90 days. CoolSculpting can reduce your stubborn fat by up to 40% in one single treatment. Exclusive to Central England, CoolSculpting is available at Air Aesthetics Clinic of Henley in Arden and Edgbaston. Dr Claire Oliver, an experienced and highly skilled aesthetics practitioner, says ‘the good news is that you can be confident on the beach and shape up in as little as 30 days with CoolSculpting; a safe, non-invasive solution. There are no needles, scalpels and no anesthesia required’, she explains. ‘Essentially, there is no downtime and no side effects. The treatment is revolutionary and achieves permanent results’. Trying to fit in beach prep treatments, frantic gym sessions and investing in pricey suck-in swimsuits can certainly steal the excitement away from a holiday in the sun. Instead, go for CoolSculpting; a pain-free procedure, effortless success and equally cool results. *CoolSculpting is the only FDA and CE Class 2a Medical Device approved for Cryolipolysis in the UK.

HIGH FIBRE All you need to know Mel Taffs

D

ietary fibre is found in cereals, fruits and vegetables. Fibre is made up of the indigestible parts of plants which pass relatively unchanged through our stomach and intestine. Fibre is mainly a carbohydrate and the main role of fibre is to keep the digestive system healthy. There are two types of fibre...

Soluble fibre Fruits, vegetables, oats, bran, barley, seed husks, flaxseed, dried beans, lentils, peas, soy milk and soy products.

Insoluble fibre Wheat bran, corn bran, rice bran, nuts, seeds, dried beans, wholegrain foods and the skins of fruits and vegetables. The benefits The main role for fibre is to keep the digestive tract healthy; it also stabilises glucose and cholesterol levels. Adults should aim to have 25- 30 grams daily whereas children between the ages of 4 and 8 should consume 18 grams daily, girls and boys should consume between 20-25 grams daily. Disorders that can occur through lack of fibre are constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, heart disease and some cancers. Fibre and ageing Fibre is more important for older people as the digestive system slows down with age so a high fibre diet is imperative. Lowering blood cholesterol There is good evidence to show that fibre reduces cholesterol levels. The fatty streaks are deposited along the walls of the arteries and this can make them dangerously narrow. It is thought that fibre binds the bile acids (which are made from cholesterol to digest dietary fats) and then excretes them.

Fibre and diabetes For people with diabetes eating a food plan high in fibre slows down the glucose absorption from the small intestine into the blood. This reduces the possibility of a surge of insulin, the hormone produced by the pancreas to stabilise the blood glucose levels. Fibre and weight control Having a high fibre diet is protective against weight gain. High fibre foods tend to have lower energy density, which means that they provide fewer calories per gram of food. As a result, a person on a high fibre diet can consume a greater quantity of food that is lower in calories. Fibrous foods are often bulky and much more filling. Diet, cancer and heart disease Increasing your dietary fibre and wholegrain intake is very likely to reduce cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, weight gain and obesity. This occurs indirectly through the protective effects of photochemistry (such as antioxidants) that are closely associated with the fibre components of fruits, vegetables and cereal foods. Conditions linked to low fibre diets Eating a low fibre diet can contribute to any of the following conditions: constipation, haemorrhoids, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, obesity, heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer. Ways to increase your fibre intake Eat breakfast cereals, barley wheat or oats. Eat 100% wholemeal bread or brown rice, add extra vegetables to your meal, and snack on fruit, dried fruits, nuts and wholemeal crackers. Want to change your bad eating habits for life? Lose weight without doing a fad diet? Feel good about yourself again? Email melanietaffs7@gmail.com or telephone Absolutely Flab U Less on 07792421080.

SIMPLY NOURISHING Cool down with facial mists Rebecca Burden

F

acial mists have spread in popularity and now contain all manner of formulations that calm, replenish, add radiance and even set your makeup in just one or two easy sprays. This product may be the easiest one to use on the market to date so no more excuses for not having the time to take care of your epidermis. Sometimes your skin can just cry out for some instant hydration during the day and you may find a drop in the quality of your skin tone and texture especially during the summer months. In warmer weather, a spray that is moisturising with some form of botanical extract or essential oil, known as a hydrosol, is the perfect choice of facial mist as it can refresh hot skin and soothe any redness or burns. It’s basically a herbal or floral water made especially potent by the extra infusions and works for all skin types to soften the skin and add a natural glow. Rodial Dragon’s Blood Hyaluronic Tonic (100ml £33.00) is a great example of a hydrasol and gives an instant hit of moisture packed with soothing rose and Dragon’s Blood extract. This is a wonder for sensitive skin types with its hyaluronic formula that not only contains Vitamin B3 and zinc to even out your complexion and fine lines but also sets your makeup for up to 12 hours. Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Face Mist (100ml £26.00) is a hydrosol that is heavy in antioxidants and anti-ageing properties that revitalises the skin’s surface. It has an unusual combination of white tea, pomegranate and African red tea that makes the pores tighter and gives the skin an instant dewy look. This mist is perfect for a pre-makeup pick me up or for those who want to keep that healthy glow all day long. An alternative fruit-based mist is the Caudalie Grape Water Soothing Moisturizing Spray (200ml £10.00). This is 100% organic and is extracted from grapes via osmosis and is perfect for all skin types including those with especially reactive skin. In one spray it floods the skin’s surface with vitamin C and potassium and helps it hold it with polysaccharides. If your skin is seriously dehydrated this is the one that will work best for you. You can just pop any of these products in your bag and it will hydrate your skin throughout the day easily and offers instant results. Have fun in picking the perfect mist for you and remember to nourish that skin of yours. www.bbyb.co.uk belovedburden@gmail.com

SHAPE UP FOR SUMMER With Pure Gym at ‘The Hub’

W

e all have that main goal to get fit, lose those few extra pounds and shape up for summer, but sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to fit a workout into our hectic daily schedules. Wouldn’t it just be so much easier if you could reach your fitness targets on your own terms, instead of exhausting yourself trying to squeeze in a quick spinning class or weight lifting session between important daily tasks? This is where Pure Gym comes in… Pure Gym is rapidly becoming Redditch’s favourite gym chain, and is unique in the way that they not only offer incredibly low membership rates with no fixed contracts, with 65 fun fitness classes each week included in the membership price, but also for the fact that the gym is open 24/7, meaning you can work out at any time of the day or night. Since the gym became part of Redditch’s key entertainment destination, ‘The Hub’, at Kingfisher Shopping Centre, over 4,200 local residents and workers have already signed up to the award winning fitness chain, with 1 in 5 members taking advantage of the ability to work out at their leisure at night time to fit in with their busy day-to-day schedules. Pure Gym’s dedication to offering fitness for everyone at any time on any day has opened up great opportunities to local people, giving those that work long, unsociable hours or individuals that feel self-conscious of working out at busy peak times the chance to reach their fitness goals in a way that was previously not open to them. The ability to work out around the clock is also good news for those that like to go to the gym at the typical peak times during the day. With more and more people choosing to work out on their own terms at the time most convenient for them, the postwork peak times at Pure Gym are less hectic than other popular gym chains, meaning you can always guarantee your favorite equipment being available for a good workout, whatever the time. Kingfisher Shopping Centre’s General Manager, Ken Williams, comments on the new Pure Gym fitness revolution for Redditch, stating “It’s great that we can be part of Pure Gym’s dedication to making health and fitness more accessible to the people of Redditch, and have the opportunity to offer support to our shoppers in reaching their fitness goals.” So why not turn that goal into a reality without sacrificing your schedule, and join the thousands of people across Redditch making their gym memberships work for them by getting fit after dark with Pure Gym? Visit The Hub at Kingfisher Shopping Centre today to see how Pure Gym can work for you this summer! For more information and to become a member please visit www.puregym.com

W

ith Chateau Impney’s reputation as Worcestershire’s most romantic wedding venue, you would be forgiven for overlooking the range of fantastic events and entertainment that the hotel offers throughout the year. The summer months are no different, as Chateau Impney welcomes an exciting line-up of rock and rollers, a seven-piece soul band and a chance to try out your Charleston at a Great Gatsby-inspired ball. Later this month, Chateau Impney will be stepping back to the 1970s in an effort to relive the disco days with its Friday Night Fever evening. Guests will take their seats in the Broadway Suite for a three-course dinner before boogieing the night away on the dance floor to the soulful sounds of sevenpiece disco, soul and Motown band Nu Soul Generation. The dress code calls for 1970s fashion – think platforms, flares and disco diva hairdos. And, with £1 from every ticket sold donated to Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust, you can do a little good as you dance! In August, Chateau Impney hosts its Gatsby Glamour: 1920s Summer Masquerade Ball. The grand hotel is the perfect venue for this Jazz Age revival. The evening begins with a delicious three-course dinner before Jivin’ Miss Daisy take to the stage, playing a repertoire of jazz and swing that is sure to get you showing off your best moves in your finest flapper dresses and dapper West Egg attire. You could even extend your evening with an overnight stay in one of the hotel’s luxury suites. To bring a glorious summer to an end, The Delray Rockets will be rocking and rolling at Chateau Impney. Bring your hot rods, motorcycles and classic rides in September for an electric evening. Playing traditional rockabilly with a modern twist, The Delray Rockets will set your pompadour on fire. The band will be supported by the Spayed Cats and followed by Chateau Impney’s resident DJ, so get ready to break out your best West Coast Swing. THE NEW TOUR Gaudet Luce Golf Club

G

audet Luce Golf Club is much more than a golf club. With a fantastic refurbishment which has seen the revamp of the restaurant and bar, a new menu and the building of the Lodge for the kids’ holiday club, Gaudet Luce is a destination worth visiting this summer. The 27 holes and practice facilities make Gaudet Luce a local favourite with seasoned golfers and novices too. Golfers are also coming from afar to enjoy the famed friendly atmosphere that this club is proud to maintain. The golf shop attracts fans of Nike and Under Armour with the extensive range of gear and with their resident professional, Russell Adams, recently being voted one of the top 100 golf coaches in the country, Gaudet Luce is already on the map as a great club with great game. But now, Director Alec Fernihough says there’s more to Gaudet Luce than golf. The clubhouse has had a makeover with a redesign and interiors update. Head chef Trevor Nicely has created a new menu of classic British dishes with French and Italian influences. The menu features starters like smoked salmon with pickled cucumber, asparagus with poached egg and homemade gnocchi. You’ll be treated to mains such as pan-seared duck breast with a berry jus, sea bass fillet with Chablis butter or a selection from the grill menu with quality steaks and gourmet burgers. All ingredients are sourced locally where possible with meat and fish coming Checketts of Ombersley. The new restaurant and bar area is perfect for events and private parties, with space upstairs away from the clubhouse guests. So far, the Gaudet Luce team are welcoming businesses and groups for conferences and meetings for up to 60 people. Also new to Gaudet Luce is the Lodge. There’ s already the successful Russell Adams Golf Academy and the nursery run by Phoenix Childcare, all on site, but the Lodge provides a Holiday Club where children can enjoy activities and games during the school breaks. Gaudet Luce is known for its all-inclusive, welcoming team. They pride themselves on making each visit a memorable for every visitor and member. For more information on upcoming events and the all new Utopian Flexible Membership, which is ideal for anyone looking to get back into golf this summer, check out the website.

THE BANK HOUSE HOTEL Head chef Dan Wall discusses influences and ingredients Lucinda Bunn

T

he Bank House Hotel is situated in the thriving city of Worcester and the cultural hub of Great Malvern. With views of the rural countryside and roots dating back to the 17th century, the Bank House brings the warmth of heritage and tradition to its guests. But head chef Dan Wall is making new traditions in the kitchen.

After a day cooking at work, do you cook decadently or plainly for yourself?

When did you become interested in cooking?

What inspires the menu at the Bank House?

I come from a family of good cooks. My grandparents grew vegetables and enjoyed cooking at home with fresh ingredients from the garden. We always ate as a family and there was this sense of occasion and togetherness when we’d sit and enjoy a meal.

It’s always the ingredients that inspire the menu here. We have fantastic suppliers who advise on what’s great at the moment and we tailor our menus to suit. That way, we’re always serving inventive dishes using the very best ingredients available.

Is there a dish that stands out from your childhood that you still make today?

Are there any cookbooks or chefs who have inspired you over the years?

Mac and cheese with boiled eggs. My mum used to make it and I still do my own version. It’s the ultimate comfort food.

Gary Rhodes has always inspired me. He does British classics really well and as a chef I have definitely accumulated a lot of cookbooks, some of which I still dip into for inspiration. I still love Marco’s White Heat and more recently, Tom Kerridge’s Proper Pub Food.

How do your early foodie experiences contrast to the training you had as a chef?

As a chef, I spend the entire day eating and often very rich foods so I like to cook plainly for myself at home. I like something light and simple like a stir fry or quick and comforting like cheese on toast.

I was trained in fine-dining so there’s definitely a difference there. I’ve had various head chef positions and it’s always been about refining the classics. So whilst there is that fine-dining edge, it always comes back to simple, good food.

Do you have a favourite dish on the menu?

What staple ingredients lift any dish and make it restaurant worthy?

We’ll have a new summer menu in the middle of June. Right now I’m thinking lamb, something interesting with offal and lots of fish; I like the idea of summer sardines with Asian spices.

It depends on the season really. I love using thyme. But right now, it has to be wild garlic. And of course, nothing’s worth making without butter (he laughs).

At the moment, it’s the roast cod loin and smoked bacon clam chowder. What will your summer menu read like?

DRINK PINK Summer love for rosé Laura Clay

I

am not alone. 11% of the wine we drink in this country is rosé. We spend around £3.3m on it. So quite a few of us must be pretty keen. Personally, I love rosé – a phrase you won’t find many wine professionals shouting from the roof tops – but with caveats. It shouldn’t be sweet (most of the time, there are always exceptions) and it shouldn’t be heavy. I have a particular penchant for well-made Côtes de Provence pinks whose colour alone is tantalisingly appealing, whose aromas make you think of rose petals, strawberries and raspberries, summer smells in a glass really, and whose flavours are bright, vibrant and refreshing. Surprisingly the sales figures show that we drink rosé all year round and not just in the warmer months but I can’t help thinking that May to September is the perfect time to enjoy these wines, partly due to the weather and partly due to the fact that the wines have had time to settle after bottling in April and are then beautifully fresh and still wonderfully fruity. Provence claims to be the oldest wine region in France with a history of wine-making, principally rosé, going back 2600 years – they should know what they are doing then. The grapes used are Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan and Rolle along with a few others, all red grapes which are de-stemmed, lightly crushed then macerated for between 2 and

20 hours until the desired colour and aromas are extracted from the skins. The grapes are then pressed and fermentation takes place in temperature stainless steel tanks. It may seem all too easy but rosés can be the most tricky of wines to make to obtain just the right amount of flavour and colour without extracting too many of the heavy tannins you find in red wines. When done properly the wines are delicate, dry and crisp often with a lively spicy finish and the best are complex and show a gorgeous finesse about them. They work brilliantly with the oily Mediterranean dishes of the area as well as (almost) all things pink – think lobster, prawns, ham, summer pudding. If Provence is your holiday destination of choice, bear in mind that the wines can taste just as good at home. Exports to the UK have risen 82% in recent years so there are plenty of Cótes de Provence rosés around. To see if they hit the spot for you and if they do and you want to push the boat out, try these pink gems: Miraval 2013 (Brangelina’s winery and very nice it is too) £17.99 Majestic, £13.19 Costco Château de Léoube, Secret de Léoube 2013 £21 Bibendum Château d’Esclans 2013 £22.95 Jeroboams

BYWine has a Posh Pinks tasting on 2nd July in central Birmingham where you will have the opportunity to taste about 20 rosés from around the world, including the three above, ranging in price from £12 to £40. To book, go to the website www.bywine.co.uk or to win 2 free tickets, answer this question: Which of these grape varieties could be used to make rosé wine? Chardonnay Grenache Riesling Please send your answer to wine@edgemagazine.org along with your name and address. Competition open to UK residents only. You must be over 18 to enter. 1 entry per person. Competition ends 20th June www.bywine.co.uk

elebrating modern design is Donna Bird, owner and buyer of the eclectic Kozihaus. Simple design does not have to mean boring homewares. Instead, Donna’s selected brands bring together modern practicality with inspiring detail. Kozihaus is the homeware boutique that serves up punchy, graphic style with cooking gadgets, contemporary lighting fixtures and edgy interior statements. Some of the brands featured at Kozihaus include Koziol, the German design troop mixing high-octane hues with recyclable plastic that they’re proud to say is BPA and melamine free, as well as Marimekko, the Finnish design company that’s reinvented their famous 1960’s Unikko poppy motif on vibrant cushions and teapots. With brands such as these, Kozihaus is bringing well-designed dining to the table. Donna selects the products that feature in the Kozihaus shop, paying particular detail to the values behind the companies and their impacts on the environment. She does all the research to find the gadgets that look good and work even better. She’s also a big supporter of British business and design. And

The coffee bar and seating also allows visitors to try out the accessories, from cool servers to unique ceramics. Speaking of ceramics, you’re bound to fall in love with the electric slow cookers with tagine lids; a happy collision of trend and tradition. HATTON & HARDING Styling your home David Hatton

I

For us, that style is the perfect balance of grit and glamour, old with new, treasured hand me downs with pristine finds and more frequently we're asked to assist clients creating a new interior space in their home with our signature styling.

We like to add personality and comfort with memorable statement pieces. This was one of the main reasons that we decided to launch our own, beautifully handcrafted armchairs, enabling clients to customise and create something truly unique perhaps combining fabrics from the latest Andrew Martin collection or Kravat collections. This has now developed further to us now creating beautiful bespoke sofa's to desired dimensions rather than the one that fits best. It's great fun sitting with clients and creating something unique, an arm from this, cushions from that, all at an accessible price.

So we have a few golden rules to share with you, you should really love the feel when you first walk in to a room. We work with our clients to understand a little more about them and how they use their home and really get to the soul of the space, then source furniture and accessories that lovingly reflect that.

It's important to give depth to a room with a style that is practical, indulgent and a little bit raw, perhaps mixing an aged French foxed mirror over a luxurious console from Porta Romana. Less is quite often more, just a few statement pieces often create more impact than lot's of accessories - but don't make the statement the TV!

n the heart of Hatton & Harding are a set of principles that help make it what it is. When we opened 4 years ago we wanted the store to feel welcoming, a true home-from-home with an individual sense of style and identity.

The attention to detail is what will define a fabulous interior from a good one. Concentrate on upholstery and window treatments, lighting and fittings, these are the things that add depth and character. Splashing out on a stunning set of curtains can really make your room. We love adding in one of our re-loved original pieces, like a Belgian chest of drawers but to look it's best it has to be set against a beautifully styled scheme. Possibly the most important thing to remember is that finding the right pieces takes time, never settle for second best, if you can't complete the room straight away don't worry, our sourcing service means we can help with that search.... which is all part of the pleasure. BLOOD GUILT: A REVIEW A novel by Ben Cheetham Mike Stafford

C

an you ever atone for killing someone? So runs the hook of Blood Guilt, the debut novel from Sheffield-resident Ben Cheetham. Set in the Steel City, it follows Detective Inspector Harlan Miller’s quest to find a young missing boy, and in doing so, find redemption. The boy is Ethan Reed, abducted from his bed at night. He is the son of Robert Reed - a man who died at Miller’s hand four years earlier. By finding Ethan, can Miller atone for the death of his father? Blood Guilt is part police procedural, part vigilante tale. Miller starts the book as a Detective Inspector, but after Reed’s death and his own subsequent incarceration, Miller is a mere civilian, albeit with a copper’s instincts and training. As such, Miller is able to act alongside the law and apart from it, drawing on assistance from former colleagues when necessary, and ignoring the law when the situation demands it. This allows Cheetham to make Miller far darker than a mere police officer might be. Cops can drink, divorce, and scorn authority, but can they plumb the depths of the human spirit? Perhaps not. Miller himself is a dark, brooding character. The weight of Robert Reed’s death bears down on him, reducing him to a kind of emotional masochism. He refuses to be happy while Reed’s family live in mourning, and pushes away those who love him. Indeed, he invites more misery on himself than we might wish on him. His crime was unfortunate, rather than calculated, and he served his time. His pain occasionally seems melodramatic, but is entirely in keeping with the tone of the book. This is a book not just about one or two crimes, but about the ripples that follow ever outwards from a crime. In Blood Guilt, crimes are the tragedies that keep on taking. There are the immediate victims, and those left in their pain afterwards. Robert Reed is killed; his wife and children are ruined by despair, and in turn their pain seeps into the lives of those about them. In Sheffield, the suffering and darkness of the characters finds the perfect backdrop. This isn’t the Sheffield of the Crucible, the Peace Gardens or the Meadowhall Centre. This is a Sheffield long since de-industrialised, lacking in hope and populated by an underclass who struggle by with little light at the end of any tunnel. Criminality is everywhere, and employment is scarce. ‘Blood Guilt’ is certainly darker than the average crime novel, but not through mere violence. Cheetham writes about darkness of the spirit, examining fallibility, frailty and weakness. There is little respite from the grim mood, but therein lies the point - Cheetham doesn’t just dip a toe in the waters, he submerges the reader entirely. This is a bleak book, but pacy and engaging; the work of a very promising debutant. www.nudgemenow.com/contributor/mike-stafford

COMING CHANGES The future for annuities Tom Ware

T

he changes to the pension rules have been seen by many to signal the death knell for annuities. The day the changes were announced saw the share prices of many insurance companies slide rapidly, and analysts were quick to issue gloomy predictions about the future prospect for the annuities market. Some suggested annuities sales could halve from here. Annuities have been a far-from-perfect option for some time. Investors have grown disillusioned with the poor rates on offer, as low interest rates, government bond yields, and longer life expectancy have conspired to push the income available lower. There is also the inheritance problem: for those who die early having already annuitised, a lifetime’s worth of pension savings can disappear. Equally, the income from fixed-rate annuities can be eroded by rapid inflation, but investors must accept a reduced income for inflationprotection. Now that retirees have the option of taking their pension pot in cash and finding alternative sources of income, many have legitimately asked whether annuities will have a place in retirement planning from here. There are a number of considerations that suggest that annuities should not be written off just yet. Firstly, annuities provide a secure long-term income. This may not be appropriate to generate all a retiree’s pension income, but they are still likely to be an appropriate home for some savings. Annuities can help ensure that retirees have a steady, consistent income on which to rely. The remainder of their pension pot can then be used to create income more flexibly according to an individual’s changing needs.

Also, rates may well improve. Annuity income is based on the level of income available from government bonds, as this is how insurance companies secure their products. The income available from government bonds, in turn, is based on the expected level of interest rates. As economic growth picks up, interest rates are expected to rise, possibly as soon as the end of 2015. This is likely to be reflected in government bond yields ahead of time. Annuities may start to look good value relative to the other options, such as equity income, or corporate bonds. However, the market is certainly likely to be more competitive. Rather than sleep-walking into an annuity product, many investors are likely to shop around more widely for the best deal at retirement. The default annuity payment can be 20% lower than the best available rates. This is particularly true if retirees have any medical conditions that may entitle them to an ‘impaired’ annuity. This could be ‘lifestyle’ conditions such as smoking or diabetes, through to life-threatening conditions such as cancer and heart disease. Ensuring the best rate from an annuity is likely to become more important. Ultimately, the annuities market will come under pressure from the changes outlined in the budget, but annuities will still have a role to play in many investors’ retirement portfolios. The change in the market has come at a time when annuity rates look particularly unattractive compared to the income available elsewhere, but this will not last indefinitely. HOME AWAY FROM HOME Ronald McDonald House Birmingham Hannah Griffiths

E

very parent dreads the thought of their child going into hospital, whether for a minor bump, ongoing tests or a lifesaving operation. The thought of having to go home whilst they are treated is almost unbearable, but now, thanks to Ronald McDonald House Birmingham, more and more families are able to stay together. Ronald McDonald House Birmingham provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families who have children being treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. With 61 en-suite bedrooms, communal kitchens, lounge and play areas this welcoming environment allows parents and siblings to cook, interact and share their experiences whilst being just minutes away from the hospital wards. Since opening in November 2009, the House has provided a place to stay for over 4,500 families who have children in hospital, with over a thousand families from the Midlands and further afield staying close to their children in 2013 alone. The accommodation is provided free of charge and for as long as families need it, whether it is a week, a month or a year, and the House relies on the generosity of supporters and fundraisers to meet its running costs. Joy Dangerfield, Deputy House Manager, says: “Our staff, volunteers and supporters in the local community have always tried to provide our families, many of whom stay with us for weeks or months at a time, with a true ‘home away from home’ experience and, we hope, a bit of normality while they have a child in hospital.

70

“Having a child in hospital is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a family. Some of our families have to travel miles from home so that their child can get the care they need. I am always moved to hear the families who stay with us talk about how, despite the heartache of having a poorly child, the House was there for them – able to save them the pain of being separated and easing the strain and anxiety of caring and coping”. Ronald McDonald House Birmingham is just one of the 14 Houses across the UK that is run by Ronald McDonald House Charities. In total the independent charity provides free accommodation to more than 7,000 families each year in or near hospital grounds. A warm welcome to the FOURTH Worcestershire Literary Festival! The festival runs this year from Friday 20th until Sunday 29th June and is a truly heady mix of poetry, cookery, workshops, readings and a fab day on the Severn Valley Railway ‘Letting Off Steam’ amongst just some of the events in the programme, this year’s festival has something for everyone. We’re also delighted to have Mike Harding reading his work at the Avoncroft Museum, Anita Sharma-James returns with ‘Spice Girl Live,’ an Indian spice cookery masterclass at Bindles Bar/Brasserie, loads of family friendly, fun workshops and a ‘Poetry Exploration’ walk around the city with Poet Emeritus Maggie Doyle, back again by popular demand. We’ll also be appointing the County’s fourth Poet Laureate at our grand launch event at the Guildhall in Worcester - who will [or can?] follow Tim Cranmore as the County’s next ‘Bard of Worcestershire’? Immediately after that event we’ll head off for a Midnight Moonlight Summer Solstice walk on the Old Hills at Callow End, who’s up for that? Expect plenty of frozen guerilla poets popping up out of the dark to frighten and thrill you whilst you wander and muse... As ever, we are indebted to all our supporters, sponsors, friends, corporate friends and the Worcestershire County Council’s Arts Office, without whom the festival simply would not happen. We run many other events throughout the year not just literary and not just during the Festival, and the LitFest committee works ceaselessly on all of these. We sincerely hope you enjoy the feast of events we have on offer...

Evette Crack, 33, from Coventry has been staying at Ronald McDonald House Birmingham since November 2013. Her baby daughter, one year-old Niayah Crack, has spent the last five months under the care of doctors and nurses at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and is being treated for neuroblastoma – a type of cancer. Staying with Evette at the House are her husband, Gary Crack, 32, and children Stephanie, 15, Sophie, 11, and Brook, 7. The House has truly become their ‘home away from home’ in recent months, with the children all studying at a nearby Birmingham school. Despite the stress and worry of having a child in hospital, Evette and her family are already enthusiastic and active supporters of the House. They have organised a fundraising talent show that took place in April and one of the family – Stephanie – has performed a specially-written song to raise money for the House. Evette says: “Being able to stay near Niayah has made so much difference. Travelling from our home in Coventry day after day to visit Niayah would have put us under real strain. Without the accommodation provided by the House and the kindness shown by staff, we would have crumbled. Thanks to Ronald McDonald House Birmingham we have been able to stay together as a family without worrying about the cost of accommodation or being separated.”

CLOUD TECHNOLOGY Hassle-free online storage Brett Laniosh

T

echnological development isn’t always about new sparkly toys and gadgets. Sometimes real change comes from the freedom to be able to work when you want, where you want. Cloud technology lets us save documents at home and then open them at work or on holiday. Free cloud storage from the likes of Google Drive, Microsoft Sky Drive (now called One Drive) and Dropbox is truly liberating and much more convenient than having to worry about USB drives which are insecure and easily lost. Cloud storage is much simpler than emailing documents and attachments. It’s not only possible to use this technology to store files; the cloud can be used to create documents as well. I’ve been using Google Drive more and more to create documents, presentations and spreadsheets. Not having to worry about where or when (it’s done automatically) they are saved is becoming more and more attractive to me. I can open documents at home, work or on the move from my PC, tablet or phone. I can also collaborate on documents live – it is quite spooky to see my business partner updating our documents whilst logged onto another PC, but it is a very productive way of working. Schools are also using the cloud to liberate learners and teachers. After all, learning doesn’t cease when the bell goes at 3.30pm. What might surprise some of you is the age at which pupils start using their own login details to access the cloud. At one time it was common for very young school children to have a shared login/password

for the whole class. Learning usernames and passwords can be a problem for all of us, but the reality is that four and five year olds are quite capable of learning their own username and password if they are encouraged to practise using them at home and school. It is something I actively encourage all schools to do for all pupils no matter how young. Early years children who have been given and are using their own usernames and passwords become much more adept as they get older. Giving them a generic logon, or even worse logging on for them, is storing up problems for the future. The secret in those first lessons is to remember that logging on is not a race and it should not be rushed. One final tip for success: If you are teaching someone to do something on a piece of technology, never do it for them (e.g. by holding the mouse). Explain what to do by pointing on the screen and using gestures such as tapping a table to show a double click. Working in the cloud doesn’t negate the need to back up your data. In just the same way that you can back up files on a computer to another drive, you can also use the cloud to back up your important files. Worcestershire based EZ-Backup (ezbackup.co.uk) offers cloud-based back up for your computer. You can even get 2GB of storage free. BROMSGROVE A happy successful school

B

romsgrove School’s results are impressive. In 2013 Bromsgrove School pupils recorded the School’s best ever A level results by registering 89% A* to B grades and secure a 100% IB Diploma pass rate with our highest IB average so far at just under 36, a score that looks set to go up further this year. At GCSE, results were very impressive with 81.3% A* to B and the highest point score in the county (according to the Telegraph). But Bromsgrove is much more than a place to get good grades, it prides itself on being a happy school where children of all ages can thrive both academically and outside of the classroom. A recent parental survey supported this with over 97% saying their child was happy or very happy at School. The opportunity to develop and excel in non academic areas is of huge importance and a massive range of sports and activities are on offer every day and at the weekend. Catering for 1600 pupils aged 3 -18 on three sites (although the prep and senior schools are adjacent to each other) gives the school a unique position within the town of Bromsgrove. With over 400 boarders, including international pupils coming from 40 different nationalities, together with a strong contingent of British boarders, the school is a small global community – a place to live, work and make friends for life. The team is always happy to welcome prospective families to have a look around – whether to an open morning or for an individual visit – please just contact the admissions team to organise a visit. If there is a point I feel should be made on behalf of a client I must make it, without fear or restraint. Saint Martin’s gave me the confidence to be able to do that on a daily basis. I was always encouraged to ask questions and express my opinions. What I thought was just as important as what I was learning. Most subjects involved some component of public speaking and the teachers always expected participation in lessons. As Head Girl I gave several speeches and talks; I learnt not only to have an opinion but also to share it articulately and clearly. Saint Martin’s instilled a work ethic within me that I still carry to this day. I was taught not only to do the necessary work to get through my examinations but also to read around my subjects. The vast majority of the children take part in musical activities, with 86% of children learning an instrument and many achieving Grades 4 to 6 in their recent music examinations. However, the main thrust of the music teaching is inclusion, with all children taking part in concerts, musical ensembles and choral performances.

All of the children take part in an annual dance showcase, productions, music concerts and an “Arts Week, which focuses each year on a part of the World: recent events have seen Brazilian carnivals and Bollywood dancing! The school aims to provide a diverse and dynamic arts offering for all children, focusing on wide range of arts and entertainment forms.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL

hoosing a school for your daughter is one of those big decisions which creeps up on parents all too quickly. The range of choice is understandably bewildering and the amount of information available can be overwhelming. Having chosen schools for my own two children ten years ago, I can sympathise with the time investment required to research in detail and attend Open Days.

The results speak for themselves of course; the school ranks year on year amongst the top girls’ independent schools in the country. Yet we aim to do so much more than that; we want to equip girls with the skills they will need for the world of work, we aim to make them resilient, to teach them to work well independently or as part of a team, to give them the confidence to aim high and to pursue their ambitions.

As a new headteacher, I found myself in a similar position contemplating a future at King Edward VI High School for Girls last autumn. Intrigued by articles on the website showcasing the multitude of activities available, the emphasis on challenging and empowering able girls, and the smiling faces, I put in my application. A visit to the school confirmed my initial impression – this is a school where able girls are given numerous opportunities to flourish in a beautiful environment.

Looking back on the choices I made, I am pleased that initial impressions proved correct. I am extremely proud to be the Principal of a school rated number one last summer by the Sunday Times in the Top 10 Independent Schools in the Midlands. I hope that you will come and visit us and experience for yourself the unique blend of tradition and innovative thinking which is at the heart of KEHS.

or a small school, St George’s, Edgbaston, is big on sporting talent.

There are two Year 11 county rowers at the school, who train regularly with Edgbaston Watersports at the reservoir based club. Luke Simkiss, in Year 11, is an Under 16 national tennis player, ranked in the top ten in the country. And the school has three county cricketers who played for Warwickshire Academy teams last season. Football success is headline news with three St George’s students playing for Birmingham City and a Year 7 pupil training with West Bromwich Albion. St George’s Football Teams have also delivered on the pitch with the Years 8 and 9 combined team winning their South Birmingham League last season and the Year 7 and Years 10 and 11 teams both coming second. Whilst not everyone has the potential to achieve sporting history, St George’s recognises the importance of making great sport available for all. Pupils from the Upper and Lower School will attend the Aegon Tennis Classic at Edgbaston Priory this month, whilst other students will also be attending a one day cricket match to see England against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston Cricket Club. If only Henry VIII could see them now‌ The U16 Netball team won through the West Midlands Finals to join the elite National Finals in March and were ranked 11th out of over 3,000 teams in the entire country. The first ever girls’ Rugby team was also set up this year and has competed in tournaments at Berkhamstead and Rosslyn Park. Although the girls did not bring home a trophy at the first attempt, they played brilliantly and will build towards greater success in years to come. Two of the players, Rachael Abbey and Phoebe Aston, were spotted by talent scouts and selected for England U18 Rugby trials in June; a phenomenal achievement in their first competitive games!

O

ne of England’s best known monarchs, King Henry VIII, was not renowned for his good treatment of women, with several wives meeting untimely ends. King Henry VIII School, however, is still flourishing over 450 years after its founder paved the way for a school to be built in Coventry. Girls have benefited from co-education for over 40 years at the school and this year there have been several notable sporting landmarks.

It is often stated by single sex girls’ schools that girls are better able to flourish in a single sex environment. It is wonderful to see the 40th anniversary of co-education at King Henry VIII School witnessing such great success for the girls alongside the boys. What Henry VIII would have to say about this, we can only imagine, but we suspect he’d be tickled pink!

DEALING WITH DREAMS The Garman Ryan Collection

Chris Wilkinson

‘I feel we are dealing with dreams and are about to house them in a solid Midlands setting for posterity. How delightful’, Kathleen Garman, 1973

O

n Wednesday 9th July this year, the gallery will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Garman Ryan Collection opening in the old Museum and Art Gallery in Lichfield Street, Walsall with an exhibition and events which aim to reveal and unpick the history and stories behind the formation of the collection and the journey from its creation to its current home in the New Art Gallery Walsall. There will be a special Celebration Opening Party on Wednesday 9th July, 6-8pm with a preview of the ‘Dealing with Dreams’ exhibition, celebrating Kathleen’s generosity of spirit and imaginative breadth which led to this fantastic gift to Walsall. We would like to invite everyone to come and celebrate the anniversary with us. The exhibition will be opened by Kathleen’s granddaughter, Annie Freud, the daughter of Lucian Freud. Annie will be reading some of her poetry which has been inspired by some of her grandmother’s artworks in the collection. These will be included in her third poetry compilation which will be published next year. The Garman Ryan Collection The Garman Ryan Collection was formed by two remarkable women, Kathleen Garman and Sally Ryan, and generously given to the Borough of Walsall with its inaugural opening on July 9th 1974. Kathleen Garman was born in nearby Wednesbury and met the great twentieth-century sculptor Jacob Epstein in 1921. She had three children by him and married him in 1955, after the death of his first wife. After Epstein’s own death in 1959, Kathleen created an art collection with her friend Sally Ryan, granddaughter of American tycoon Thomas Fortune Ryan and a talented sculptor in her own right. Together Kathleen and Sally formed a collection of works by some of the greatest European artists such as Dürer, Rembrandt, Constable, Van Gogh and Monet - as well as artworks by unknown artists. Following Sally Ryan’s death in 1968, Kathleen started to look around for a home for what

80

she had started to call ‘The Garman Ryan Collection’ and came back to her roots in the Black Country, finally settling on Walsall as the recipient of this fabulous gift. The collection also serves as a memorial to the Epstein’s extraordinary circle of family and friends, including Augustus John, Matthew Smith, Modigliani and GaudierBrzeska. His complex family life is also revealed both through the Epstein Archive of letters and photographs held at the New Art Gallery Walsall but also through the many personal artworks in the collection, including Lucian Freud’s portrait of his wife ‘Kitty’ who was Epstein and Kathleen’s daughter. Above all, the collection provides important insights into Jacob Epstein’s long and often controversial career. The thematic arrangement on which Kathleen insisted provides the opportunity to make unexpected links and comparisons across different centuries and cultures. Intimate, wide-ranging and adventurous, this is a collection that offers something for everyone to enjoy. ‘The Garman Ryan Collection acts as a spring board for complementary displays, acquisitions and educational programmes and is the foundation of all that we do at the New Art Gallery Walsall’ Stephen Snoddy, Director of the New Art Gallery Walsall, 2014 In February 2000 Walsall opened the doors of the New Art Gallery Walsall, a world class art gallery situated in the centre of the town. At the heart of the building lies the Garman Ryan Collection, enabling visitors to make links between the art of the past and present. Without the fabulous gift of the collection to Walsall it would not have been possible to make the arguments for building a new gallery. We are deeply indebted to Lady Kathleen Epstein for the gift that made it possible to create this fantastic building and facility for the people of Walsall and beyond. LASTING IMPRESSIONS The Barber Institute of Fine Arts Andrew Davies

A

print made with children’s favourite modelling clay plasticine is one of the exhibits in this summer’s main exhibition at Birmingham’s Barber Institute of Fine Arts. Lasting Impressions: 20th-century Portrait Prints (6th June – 28th September) is the third in a prestigious series of annual displays of works of art lent by the National Portrait Gallery, London. Visitors to the University of Birmingham-based gallery will be able to spot familiar faces from all walks of life – including former boxer Frank Bruno, late British artist Lucian Freud, Naked Civil Servant Quentin Crisp and even Birmingham-born Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant. There’s also an unusual picture of the House of Commons from 1986 – in effect a group portrait of Parliament in action, featuring 100 of the era’s most recognisable politicians, including Edward Heath, Michael Heseltine, Edwina Currie, Dennis Healey, Roy Hattersley, Douglas Hurd, Neil Kinnock, Nigel Lawson, Cecil Parkinson, Norman Tebbit, Tony Benn and, of course, Margaret Thatcher. The exhibition looks at how portrait printmaking experienced a revival at the beginning of the 20th century – despite the recent developments in the new art of photography in the late 1800s. Many thought photography, with its potential for mass-producing portrait images, would sound the death-knell of portrait printing. At the same time, printing had become so mechanised that it was mainly regarded as just a means of mass reproduction. However, in around 1910, printmaking experienced a revival, with artists reviving traditional techniques, seemingly rediscovering their expressive possibilities and creating prints that could stand for themselves as works of art.

This display explores how artists including Eric Gill, Oskar Kokoschka, Richard Hamilton and Tom Phillips have used different print processes to help convey the personalities and circumstances of their sitters. It also looks at how they have used self-portraiture to experiment with all sorts of new and unconventional techniques – often with dramatic results. The prints will be accompanied by a range of printmaking tools and books from the University’s Cadbury Research Library and Research and Cultural Collections, for which some of the artists featured produced illustrations. Co-curated by Masters’ students from the University’s History of Art department, it’s accompanied by a programme of gallery talks, practical workshops and other events for all ages. POP OF CULTURE Lucinda Bunn

PaintdropsKeepFalling at Harborne Art Gallery 13th June – 2nd August ‘PaintdropsKeepFalling’ is the title of the new exhibition at Harborne Art Gallery featuring the still life paintings of Birmingham-based painter and surface pattern designer Claire Leggett, running from 13th June until 2nd August. Claire says “My painting and design is a celebration of colour and pattern. I love to create paintings that either blend a harmonious colour palette or contrast with a vibrant ‘pop’ of colour.” Harborne Art Gallery would like to invite interested parties to join them at the informal preview on Thursday, 12th June from 5-8 pm. The artist will be present and refreshments will be served. Harborne Art Gallery 8 Greenfield Road (at Frametec) Harborne B17 0EE 0121 428 1038 www.frametec.co.uk

Val Pitchford – Adventures in Paint – 31st May – end of July `Exactitude is not the truth’ - Delacroix These five thought provoking words encapsulate perfectly many of Val Pitchford’s thoughts and aspirations as a painter and the forthcoming exhibition of her recent work demonstrates many aspects of her approach to the canvas. Small jewel-like works contrast with abstract and majestic landscapes. She sees each new painting as an adventure, exploring the use of paint and colour within the composition, creating a sense of immediacy and freshness. The ultimate hope is to give pleasure to the viewer, maybe taking them down a previously unknown path. omes R Us Ltd is celebrating its 25 year anniversary this month. Carl, who joined his father in 1997 has since developed the company into a national property buying organisation. Homes R Us Ltd is based in Balsall Common, and specialises in the purchase of residential property throughout England and Wales.

For a quick and easy approach to selling your property for a fair price please contact Carl Hemming for a noobligation guide price on 0800 019 6565, 7 days a week, 9am- 9pm or take a look at the website for more information www.homesrusltd.co.uk where you can even get a quote online.
