Global Conversations – Turkey’s Challenges

In July 2014, the Minnesota International Center was pleased to send five Minnesota teachers on a 2-week study tour of Turkey through a partnership with the World Affairs Councils of America and the Turkish Cultural Foundation. MIC has invited Ross Wilson, former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, and the five Minnesota teachers who recently traveled to Turkey, for a conversation on the country’s rich history, evolving identity, and critical role it plays as a U.S. ally in the Middle East.

Turkey: a nation at a crossroads, a bridge over an ever-growing chasm between the East and West. Turkey’s first leader after World War I, Kemal Ataturk, envisioned a modern, democratic nation-state built on the ashes of the Ottoman Empire with strong ties to Europe, not the Middle East. But as the clashes between secular and religious groups, and the 2013 protests in Taksim Square show, the heart of Turkey is still very much up for grabs. Join us for Global Conversations, a monthly program series on issues significant to the U.S.’s role in the global community. Based on the Great Decisions meeting model, Global Conversations feature presentations by a local expert followed by a discussion. When: Wednesday, November 12; 5:30 – 7:30 P Where: Minneapolis Central Library, 2nd Floor, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis Cost: FREE and open to all; advance registration requested

Letter from the President

MIC CORPORATE MEMBERS

Globally minded companies that value membership with the Minnesota International Center

As we head into the fall season, MIC is now in full speed ahead mode. Whether you are interested in networking, dining or learning about foreign policy issues – Turkey in particular – MIC has it all for you! And then, there is WorldQuest – our wildly popular international trivia competition. For some of our members, that is a not-to-bemissed annual event. Why not make it one of yours? We’re also highlighting another one of our “quiet” endeavors – the Global Education Program. This program targets the youngest members of our community… from introducing 2nd and 3rd graders to other cultures and countries with Classroom Connection, to providing professional development opportunities for educators, to testing our high school students’ global knowledge at Academic WorldQuest. This program is critical to our goal of increasing global understanding in Minnesota. None of these success stories would be possible without member support. Thank you, members! ps: If you haven’t renewed your membership yet, don’t miss the opportunity to double your giving with the just announced Challenge Grant.

Thank you

for being a member of the Minnesota International Center! Your support creates opportunities to connect people in

Minnesota with the world and build the global engagement and understanding of our community.

Perhaps you’re a member because you get great MIC event

discounts and special member-only invitations; perhaps because you love dinner hosting international visitors; perhaps because

you are an enthusiastic member of a Great Decisions discussion group; or perhaps because you want to support our Global

Education Program for the youth in our community. Or maybe you just value a more global Minnesota. Whatever the reason, thank you for your continued support!

Bringing the World to Minnesota and Minnesota to the World

MIC’s Global Education Program is definitely BACK TO SCHOOL … in classrooms of 2nd and 3rd graders with Classroom Connection, sending five Minnesota teachers on a study tour to Turkey, arranging for three Minnesota educators to attend the Great Decisions Teacher Training Institute in New York and, in February 2015, holding an even larger Academic WorldQuest competition for high school students.

What and why?

In its new format, Classroom Connection brings international speakers into 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms for 3 one-hour visits (we focus on 2nd and 3rd grades because the social studies standards for these grades have an emphasis on introducing the students to the world around them).

How does Classroom Connection work? MIC’s Global Education Manager, Ann Smith, recruits and trains international speakers, mainly from the University of Minnesota. The speakers represent many countries, cultures, languages, expertise and talents because Classroom Connection can bring global perspectives to any discipline. Just two examples from this year … Jikku, a chemical engineering student from India, visited a 3rd grade class at a science magnet school. During his first and third visits, his conversations and activities focused on India. But, during his second visit, Jikku gave the students the opportunity to ask questions about chemical engineering and led the students through an experiment to separate salt from sand.

In the Arts, Soojin, a Ph.D. candidate in Music Education from South Korea, visited a 2nd/3rd grade choir, where she taught the children a traditional Korean folk song, as well as teaching about her culture and traditional Korean instruments. The choir sang the song at the spring concert, and Soojin accompanied them with the Kayagum.

Who funds Classroom Connection?

MIC individual and corporate members make it possible for MIC to heavily subsidize this program for schools. Schools are asked to pay a portion of the costs and MIC is continually fundraising to help support these programs. For example, at the June Gala, Classroom Connection was the beneficiary of the $40,000 Fund-A-Need.

Whats next for Classroom Connection?

The goal for last year’s pilot program was to present Classroom Connection in 20 classrooms in the St. Paul Public School District. In fact, Classroom Connection brought international/intercultural perspectives to nearly 900 students and 40 educators in over 30 classrooms. Going forward, MIC is working to grow Classroom Connection within the St. Paul Public School District, building on relationships established during the pilot year, while developing key relationships with Minnesota educators; and introducing the initiative to more schools and districts.

Whats the reaction to Classroom Connection?

STUDENTS:

“You have made Brazil my all-time favorite country.” – 3rd grader SPEAKER:

“Classroom Connection has given me a brand new perspective about my own country as well as the American education and community. It gave me a new way to share my special and unique culture with other people.” – Speaker from Malaysia

Academic WorldQuest

TEACHERS: “My-Hahn’s visits gave me an opportunity to teach the children about Vietnam. Many of my students come from Laos. My-Hahn’s participation was a way to honor their culture.” – E1 Teacher “I was just talking to the 2nd grade teachers and heard rave reviews about the two speakers from Somalia and Ghana – they loved them!” – Curriculum Coordinator

Once again, MIC will be holding its Academic WorldQuest International Trivia Competition for high school students on February 4, 2015. This is a FREE event where teams of 4 students answer questions on topics similar to the public WorldQuest competition held in December. The winning team is sponsored by MIC to compete to Washington, D.C., representing Minnesota at the National World Affairs Councils of America Competition. If you know high school students or high school teachers who would be interested in participating, please have them contact Ann Smith, MIC’s Global Education Manager, at 612.625.1467 for more details and to sign up their team. Thanks to the David Winton Bell Foundation for its support and to General Mills for hosting the event. When: Wednesday, February 4, 2015; 3:00 – 6:00 P Where: General Mills World Headquarters, 1 General Mills Boulevard, Golden Valley. Transportation to and from the venue is NOT provided but a limited number of transport scholarships will be offered.

$5,000 Travel Abroad Scholarship

MIC is partnering again with The Experiment in International Living, a program of World Learning, to offer a $5,000 scholarship for a summer study abroad program for one Academic WorldQuest participant. Only students participating in this event can apply! Last year’s recipient, Catherine Bradley, a high school student from Hutchinson, traveled to Argentina and says, “The trip meant an opportunity to expand my worldwide view, to use and improve my Spanish skills, to learn about photography, and to truly engage in another culture.”

Spotlight on Turkey

For the past three summers, MIC, in collaboration with the Turkish Cultural Foundation, has sent Minnesota teachers on a summer study of Turkey. This year, FIVE Minnesota teachers were chosen to participate in this unique opportunity to broaden their international perspectives … Marina Dale (Mounds Park Academy); Gerald Bizjak, Jr. (Albert Lea High); Sarah Arneson (St. Paul Central); Jay Nelson (Orono Middle) and Lynne Johnson (Thomas Jefferson High, Bloomington). Note: The Spotlight on Turkey teachers will be part of the Global Conversations on Turkey - see page 2 REGISTER TODAY AT MICGLOBE.ORG OR CALL 612.625.1662

Who is behind all this?

That would be Ann Smith, MIC’s Global Education Manager. Ann joined MIC last year and has been working non-stop to pilot Classroom Connection, recruiting international speakers and meeting with school officials; all this, while recruiting teams for Academic WorldQuest and coordinating development opportunities for teachers. Your membership dollars at work - thank you! Not My Life: Preventing Human Trafficking Among Youth in Minnesota Minnesota is a national leader in proactively combating human trafficking through coordinated task forces and victim-centered legislation. However, the battle against sex trafficking in communities statewide is ongoing. In 2013, MIC was fortunate to be a host site for Not My Life, a national program of the World Affairs Councils of America with support provided by a grant from Carlson & the Carlson Family Foundation. Not My Life features a documentary screening and discussion with local experts on the critical global issue of human trafficking. MIC was once again selected to host a local program in 2014, and is proud to present Not My Life at St. Paul Central High School on October 21. This program for students will examine the global and local connections of human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking of minors on the internet. Following the documentary screening, local experts who work with youth trafficking victims will speak about ways that youth can be involved in human trafficking prevention and awareness.
