Austen Everett never played at Miami, and if the Hurricanes have their way, she’ll never be forgotten. The former women’s soccer goalkeeper was honored by the school Sunday, exactly two months after the 25-year-old died after a long fight with cancer. Everett was on Miami’s roster from 2007 through 2009 but never got into a match, first because of NCAA transfer rules and then after she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2008. Still, she remains a Hurricane. Miami’s players -- many of whom never personally knew her -wore special warm-up shirts in her honor before Sunday’s match against Virginia Tech, and fans were offered information about how to help the Austen Everett Foundation, which she started to help children who are fighting cancer. “It means so much,” Everett’s mother, June Leahy, said of the tributes. “It means everything to us.” University president Donna Shalala and acting athletic director Blake James also attended Sunday and presented Everett’s family with her posthumous degree as a surprise. Maybe it was fitting, on a day when Miami honored a goalie, the Hokies and Hurricanes finished in a scoreless tie. “Austen was a tremendous representative of our program,” James said. “And her legacy lives on through her foundation.” Everett fought the disease all the way to the end, even thinking that she beat it on more than one occasion. She was undeterred by what effects cancer had on her body -- flaunting wigs proudly when chemotherapy took away her long blonde hair. Even six weeks before her death, Everett was putting together presentations about how cancer patients could dress in a manner that might hide some of the outward signs of their illness. In a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, Everett also said the disease brought her unbelievable amounts of joy, in a way she never expected. Someone who heard her story when she went public with the diagnosis in 2008 was Matt Luzunaris, who read it and decided to reach out to Everett. They met, and eventually got engaged. “For someone to never play a game here but still have such an impact here at the University of Miami and the community, that’s massive,” said Luzunaris, a professional soccer player, who also attended Sunday’s tribute. “Everybody knows who she was. Everybody knows the person that she was. To be blessed that I spent the time I did with her, the three years we had with each other, it was amazing. That time we had, it was a gift.” Luzunaris is now president of his fiancee’s foundation and has plans to turn what was just an idea not long ago into something that can be sustained for years to come. One of the foundation’s missions is to pair college and pro athletes up with cancer-stricken children who perhaps can draw inspiration from sports. “We want to be able to have the ability to touch other kids who are going through the same struggles, and just give them a phenomenal memory,” said Leahy, the foundation’s vice president. “That was Austen. That was totally the way she was.”

Sebastian the Ibis, the University of Miami’s famous mascot, is one of 16 spirited heroes vying to become the 2012 Capital One Mascot of the Year, announced Monday by Capital One. Sebastian is one of three ACC mascots in the competition, joining Testudo (Maryland) and Ms. Wuf (NC State). Fans will be able to vote for their favorite mascots via Twitter. Regular season vote officially opens at 12 p.m. EDT on Mon., Sept. 3, and continues weekly through Mon., Nov. 26. The top eight mascots with the best headto-head records will then compete in a bracket-style, single-elimination competition to determine the overall winner. Fans can vote at www.CapitalOneBowl.com, on Facebook and on Twitter. All voting information appears at www.CapitalOneBowl.com. For the first time in its 11-year history, the competition will include two female mascots – Ms. Wuf and Wilma T. Wildcat from Arizona. The duo will be joined by four other competition newbies – Colorado State’s Cam the Ram, Missouri’s Truman the Tiger, Rutgers’ Scarlet Knight and Texas Tech’s Red Raider. The rest of the 16-member 2012 Capital One All-America Mascot Team includes Cosmo (BYU), Sparty (Michi-
gan State), Mike the Tiger (LSU), Wolfie Jr. (Nevada), YoUDee (Delaware), Bucky Badger (Wisconsin), The Duck (Oregon) and Cocky (South Carolina). In addition to the 2012 team, Western Kentucky’s Big Red became the first inductee into the Capital One Mascot Challenge Hall of Fame. Big Red competed eight times in the Capital One Mascot Challenge. This year, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look inside the Capital One Mascot Training Camp. The quirky video vignettes will be released at www.CapitalOneBowl.com and www.Facebook.com/MascotChallenge. The Capital One National Mascot of the Year will be announced Jan. 1, 2013, at the Capital One Bowl and will be awarded a $20,000 scholarship to help fund its school’s mascot program. Each of the 2012 Capital One AllAmerica team members will also receive $5,000 for their university mascot program. After a 20-year hiatus, volleyball returned to the Coral off 11 straight victories to close the season. It would be Gables campus for the 2001 season. In the first year the beginning of a 26-game win streak that would last back, the Hurricanes finished 17-7 overall and reeled midway through the 2002 season.

Fall Completion With a roster anchored by five underclassmen – three freshmen and two sophomores, the Miami Hurricanes concluded their fall 2012 schedule with a 12th-place showing at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn. Third-year head coach Patti Rizzo’s young lineup will only grow up and get better from here. Through the four fall tournaments, the Canes were paced by sophomores Rika Park and Leticia RasAnderica. Park will enter the spring campaign with a team-best 74.50 scoring average through 12 rounds that included Miami’s only top-15 individual finish of the fall. Miami’s other dynamic sophomore, RasAnderica, ranks second on the team behind Park with a 75.17 scoring average. Consistency
from Park and Ras-Anderica, who both competed as individuals at the 2012 NCAA Central Regional, will be one of the keys for the Hurricanes if they want to make a spring push for the 2013 NCAA postseason. The other? Miami will need solid play from the bottom of its lineup, which features three freshmen. After playing away from the Sunshine State in the fall, the Hurricanes will open the spring season with four consecutive tournaments within the state of Florida beginning with the UM-hosted Hurricane Invitational in February. The Canes’ spring schedule could play in their favor as they work toward their goal of advancing to the NCAA postseason as a team for the first time in the ACC era.

MBB Picked Fifth in Media Poll
The University of Miami men’s basketball team has been predicted to finish fifth in the ACC this season by the media as announced by the league during Operation ACC Basketball in Charlotte, N.C. The ACC coaches picked the Canes to finish fourth. The fifth-place ranking places Miami in the same position as a year ago, the second-highest rank since joining the ACC in 2004-05. Miami’s preseason breakdowns (votes) are as follows: 2012-13 - 5th (436), 2011-12 - 5th (455), 2010-11 - 8th (305), 2009-10 - 10th (135), 2008-09 4th (344), 2007-08 - 12th (153), 2006-07 - 11th (173), 2005-06 - 7th (540) and 2004-05 - 11th (146). NC State was picked to win the league, followed by Duke, North Carolina and Florida State. In 2012-13, Coach Jim Larranaga and his staff will begin their second year at the helm in Coral Gables. Having posted a 20-13 record and an appearance in the NIT (second round) in his first campaign, Larranaga was the first Canes coach to open his UM career with 20 wins. Miami finished the season tied for fourth in the conference, a program-best, and registered Miami’s first-ever winning record in the ACC (9-7). Miami returns nine scholarship players from the 2011-12 roster. Those nine players accounted for 80 percent of the Canes scoring, and 86 percent of rebounds, 82 percent of assists, 91 percent of blocks, 83 percent of steals, 81 percent of field goals made and 72 percent of three pointers made. The Canes open the season with an exhibition on Nov. 2 against St. Leo, then open the regular season on Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. against Stetson in the BankUnited Center. With the first games of the 2012-13 campaign just two weeks away, it’s time to get your tickets for the Miami men’s basketball season. This year the Canes will host numerous high-profile ACC and nonconference opponents at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, so fans should call 800-284-2263 now to reserve your tickets. Ticket options include the FAN-tastic 4-Pack and the ACC Weekend Pack. The FAN-tastic 4-Pack includes a premium seat for men’s basketball matchups against Michigan State (Nov. 28), Duke (Jan. 23), Florida State (Jan. 27) and North Carolina (Feb. 9) for just $250. The ACC Weekend Pack offers fans a choice of three levels of tickets to Miami’s men’s games against Maryland (Jan. 13), Florida State (Jan. 27), North Carolina (Feb. 9) and Clemson (March 9). ACC diehards can sit in premium seats for $186, select seating for $106 or regular seating for $63.

Ken Dorsey and Brett Romberg, members of Miami’s 2001 national champion football team, highlight the UM Sports Hall of Fame seven-member Class of 2013. The Class of 2013 includes Ed Contreras (baseball, 1957-59), Dorsey (football, 1999-2002), Bryan Gillooly (diving, 1994-98), Norm Parsons (administration / coaching, 1972-2012), Romberg (football, 1999-2002), Don Soldinger (coach, 1984-88 & 1995-2006) and Jay Tessmer (baseball, 1994-95). One of Miami’s first true power hitters, Contreras (right) led the Canes in home runs and RBI in each of his three seasons (19 HR, 67 RBI in 77 games) and also led the team in batting in 1958 (.316) and 1959 (.310). He left Miami as the school’s single-season and career home runs leader and he still holds the UM career slugging percentage record (.615) for under 300 at bats. He played for legendary major leaguer and UM coach, Jimmy Foxx, and also played basketball for UM Sports Hall of Famer, Coach Bruce Hale. Dorsey (left) quarterbacked the Hurricanes to their fifth national championship in 2001 and was named MVP of the 2002 Rose Bowl. He was a 2002 All-American by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The 2001 and 2002 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, Dorsey set eight UM career records, including total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions and attempts. He is the winningest quarterback in program history (38-2) and he won the 2001 Maxwell Award as the top player in college football. Gillooly (right) was a two-time NCAA diving champion, winning the 10-meter platform title in 1996 and the 3-meter springboard in 1998. He was a 12time All-American, garnering the honor in the 1- and 3-meter springboards, and the 10-meter platform in each of his four years at Miami (1995-98). He was also named the 1996 NCAA Diver of the Year and was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star in 1996-97. Gillooly was a finalist at the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials. 20

CLASS OF 2013 Parsons (right), who served as the women’s golf coach from 1973-78 and men’s golf coach from 1980-88, coached the women’s golf team to the 1977 and 1978 AIAW national championships. He served UM as Director of the Herbert Wellness Center (1996-present), Director of Campus Sports and Recreation (1977-96), and Intramural Director (1972-73) among other positions. He coached UMSHoF members Cathy Morse, Woody Austin and Nathaniel Crosby. In 2002 Romberg (left) was a consensus AllAmerican and Rimington Award winner as the nation’s best center. He was a first-team All-BIG EAST selection in 2001 and 2002, while never allowing a sack in his time as the Hurricanes center. Miami went 35-2 in his 37 consecutive starts at center, helping lead the Canes to the 2001 national title and three BIG EAST titles. Soldinger (below, left) was the linebackers and tight ends coach for Jimmy Johnson from 1984-88 and was the running backs and special teams coach under coaches Butch Davis and Larry Coker from 1995-2006. He was on the 1987 and 2001 national championship coaching staffs; he also coached six of the seven Miami running backs that rushed for 1,000 yards in a season (Willis McGahee, Edgerrin James twice, Clinton Portis, Danyell Ferguson, Frank Gore and James Jackson). In his 16 seasons as a Hurricanes assistant coach, Miami won 158 games. Tessmer (below, right) was a first-team Collegiate Baseball All-American in 1995 after collecting 20 saves - tied for second-most in school history - and posting a 1.31 ERA to lead Jim Morris’ squad to the College World Series. He finished second nationally in Division I with a 1.16 ERA in 1994, while his career 1.24 ERA ranks second in school history. He holds the UM record for fewest walks per 9 innings (1.42 average) and has the second-most appearances by a pitcher in a season (45 in 1995). Tessmer finished his career fifth with 23 saves and played professionally for the New York Yankees. The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1966 by eight Dade County Circuit Court judges, who wanted to establish an organization that would recognized those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who excelled at their sport and brought acclaim to the University of Miami through their achievements and championships. With the addition of the seven newest members, the Sports Hall of Fame will increase to 274 honorees. The newest class will be inducted Thu., April 11, 2013, at the 43rd annual UM Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, which will be held at Jungle Island. Miami’s Stefanie Yderstrom has been named to the Preseason All-ACC Team by the conference coaches and the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel, while the Hurricanes were voted fifth in the Coaches Preseason Poll, as announced Tuesday by the conference office at the ACC Women’s Basketball Media Day. This season for the first time, the ACC coaches and the Blue Ribbon Panel voted separately on both the Preseason Poll and the Preseason All-ACC Team. After a junior season in which she earned third-team conference honors, leading the ACC with 68 three-pointers, Yderstrom becomes one of 10 women named to the Preseason Coaches and Blue Ribbon Panel Preseason All-ACC Teams. The conference coaches voted the Hurricanes fifth in their preseason poll, while the Blue Ribbon Panel - made up of national and local media members - voted Miami has the ACC’s sixth-best team heading into the 2012-13 season. The Hurricanes open their season on Nov. 5 with a home exhibition against Nova Southeastern. The regular season gets underway on Nov. 9 against UNF. There was a three-way tie for the Preseason Coaches Player of the Year between Marlyand’s Alyssa Thomas, Duke’s Elizabeth Williams and Duke’s Chelsea Gray. Publix $9 before 9 a.m. Tickets
The Miami Hurricanes have announced a special ticket deal – the “Publix Nine before 9” for the team’s 2012 home football schedule at Sun Life Stadium. The “Publix Nine before 9” deal begins on the Monday before each home football game, and will allow fans the opportunity to purchase tickets to that week’s game for only $9 each. To receive the special price, tickets must be purchased in person at the BankUnited Center between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The special kicks off this Monday, Sept. 10, with $9 tickets available for Saturday’s game vs. Bethune-Cookman. Seats at the special price will be available through Friday, and must be purchased between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the BankUnited Center. This week, and in all ensuing weeks other than Florida State, there is no limit to the number of tickets fans can purchase. Jenny Cento | Tallahassee, Florida How did you become a Hurricanes fan? “I’ve been a Cane for as long as I can remember. We’ve been fans ever since my mother began working on campus when I was five years old with the dream that one day she would give me the gift of a free UM education. I graduated in 2010 after spending the best four years of my life bleeding orange and green.” Do you find it difficult supporting Miami all the way from Tally? “Somewhat. Tallahassee is Nole Country. At the beginning I felt like a traitor moving up to Tallahassee for a graduate program at Florida State University. There was way too much garnet and gold and not enough orange and green. “Now, two years later, I work full time at FSU and my students often ask who I cheer for when the two teams play. My answer: ‘I’m a Miami Hurricane.’ I still rock my UM wardrobe in Tallahassee despite the crazy stares.” Is there a place you visit to watch Hurricanes games in the city? “I mostly watch the games from home where I can cheer as loud as I want.” Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Tallahassee? “I haven’t found many other UM fans in Tallahassee except my best friend and UM graduate, Melissa Caride, who also moved to Tallahassee for a graduate program. Together we watched the Canes on television wishing we we could be at Sun Life Stadium to cheer them on.” How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? Travel for games? “My gym in Tallahassee, Sweat Therapy Fitness, encourages us to wear our team colors to group classes on game day Saturdays. I always rock my orange and green. “In addition my office is decked out in UM gear with my diploma hanging proudly on the wall. My computer desktop picture is Lake Osceola and Stanford Residential College, where I served as an Resident Assistant for three years. I always go to the FSU/UM game every year whether it’s in Miami or Tallahassee. Looking forward to this year’s game!” Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes fan? “My favorite memory is the feeling of riding the Metrorail to the Orange Bowl on game day Saturdays with all my friends. The sense of pride I experienced as I looked down the cars and saw nothing but a sea of orange is hard to put into words. “Another favorite memory is taking my floor of freshmen residents to their first UM game each year and seeing their faces light up as they watched the Canes run out of the smoke tunnel. No matter where I live, I am and always will be a Miami Hurricane!”

In the Driver’s Seat Through 8 games, Canes still in contention for ACC Coastal title Who would have thought that – after eight games – the teams picked to finish sixth and fifth in the ACC Coastal Division are currently 1-2 atop the division standings? After a hot 4-1 start, the Miami Hurricanes have dropped three straight, including back-to-back tough ACC losses to North Carolina and No. 14 Florida State. Despite that, the Canes are still in contention for the ACC Coastal Division crown and a berth in the ACC Championship game. Entering its open date this week, the Canes are half a game behind Duke and half-game ahead of North Carolina and Virginia in the ACC Coastal Division. While a win against North Carolina or Florida State would have helped Miami’s stock tremendously, the Nov. 1 tilt with Virginia Tech looms large for the Hurricanes. In fact, it could be a make-orbreak game for both clubs. Miami and Virginia Tech will meet for the 30th time – with the Canes leading the series 17-12 – and the 21st time as conference opponents. Both schools have met each year since 1992 when – as Big East Conference members – UM defeated the Hokies 43-23 in Blacksburg, Va. The Hokies enter the Nov. 1 ACC Coastal clash having won the previous three meetings.
Miami will once again face one of the ACC’s most dynamic quarterbacks in Virginia Tech’s Logan Thomas. The redshirt junior, who was a second-team All-ACC performer in 2011, has through for 1,910 yards in eight games, while tossing 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Like the Canes, the Hokies have relied on a myriad of receivers in 2012 as Virginia Tech QBs have thrown to 16 different players (conversely, Miami has thrown to 15 different players). Virginia Tech’s top two receivers – Marcus Davis (33-643-4) and Corey Fuller (25-503-4) have combined for more than 1,100 yards and eight TDs. Miami ranks 22nd nationally is passing offense, while Virginia Tech is 30th overall in pass efficiency defense. Just by comparing the statistics on paper, all signs point to Nov. 1 being a competitive and important game for both teams. The winner puts pressure on division leader Duke and moves one game closer to bowl-eligibility status, while the loser sits one game below .500 with three games to play and postseason hopes becoming dire.
Junior QB Stephen Morris leads the ACC with 2,219 passing yards through eight games. His 277.4 yards-per-game average ranks second only to NC State’s Mike Glennon (284.0) in the ACC.
DUKE AND THE JET(S) Freshman Duke Johnson is one of 12 players named to the 2012 Jet Award Midseason Watch List last week. The Jet Award honors the best return specialist in college football. Drawing its name from former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny “The Jet” Rodgers, the Jet Award is voted on by a selection committee featuring football writers and broadcasters from around the country as well as Rodgers and Joe Adams, the 2011 Jet Award winner. To be considered for the Jet Award, players must be a primary kick or punt returner for his team. They must be among the national leaders in return categories and show leadership, courage, desire, respect for authority and discipline.
#ROOKIECANES NO MORE Through eight games, the Miami Hurricanes have played 21 freshmen, including 16 true freshmen. Of those 21 freshmen, seven have started at least one game – S Deon Bush, RT Ereck Flowers, RB Duke Johnson, WR Malcolm Lewis, DT Earl Moore, DL Corey King and LB Eddie Johnson.

Winning Streak for VB Canes tied for first in ACC standings and nationally ranked Miami volleyball has continued to make its mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and recently in the national rankings. Sitting atop the conference standings at 10-1, the Canes entered the AVCA Poll at No. 24 on Oct. 15 and look to move up after extending their winning streak to eight matches this past weekend. UM is 18-3 on the season with nine contests left to go, including four at home. Most recently, the Canes took down Clemson and Georgia Tech on the same road trip, a feat that had never been done before under head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. Those victories bumped the Canes to its best start in the ACC (10-1) since joining the conference in 2004. “I think we took a big step up this week in our road performance and being able to rise to the challenge,” Lantagne Welch said. “We have to keep improving as the season continues and working hard to move up the ladder.” Against the Tigers, sophomore middle
blocker Emani Sims totaled a school record 16.0 blocks in the match to help the Hurricanes set a new program mark with 23.0 total team rejections in the match. It was the third five-set win of the year. The Canes followed that performance with an impressive sweep at Georgia Tech, one of the tougher road environments in the league. Sophomore Savanah Lead led the team with 12 kills, while junior Taylor Hollins registered her 15th double-double of the season with 16 digs and 11 digs. Orchestrating the offense, senior Nrithya Sundararaman collected 93 combined assists at setter in the two matches. Next up, Miami returns home this week to host Virginia Tech and Virginia at the Knight Sports Complex, a gym UM is undefeated inside this season. The Canes will be looking to avenge its only ACC loss against the Hokies.

Despite the loss of veteran talent, freshmen have stepped up to help take control of the team’s destiny. Shannon McCarthy and Allie Rossi each played 110 minutes in the doubleovertime draw against Boston College, while Ally Andreini and Jasmine Paterson have been consistent offensive forces for Coach Anagnost and his staff since the team’s season-opening win at Florida. Though the offense has battled consistency, the team’s defense has served as the backbone in the final stages of the season. Since a 3-0 defeat to ninth-ranked Virginia on Oct. 11, Miami has seen some of the conference’s most talented offensive players come up empty; in Sunday’s scoreless draw, the Hurricanes successfully held Eagles’ midfielder Kristen Mewis in check. The senior entered the match-up ranked first in the Atlantic Coast Conference in points with 37.
The Hurricanes took down both Boston College and Maryland during the final stages of their 2011 season, earning a 3-2 win over the ninth-ranked Eagles and a 2-1 decision over the No. 16 Terps. This time around, Miami defeated No. 7 Maryland in overtime (1-0) and played No. 24 BC to a scoreless draw in double overtime.

Thursday’s regular season finale at Cobb Stadium is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff The Miami Hurricanes capped an impressive road trip with a strong showing on the road at Boston College, earning a draw with the No. 24 Eagles in a crucial Atlantic Coast Conference match-up. With the tie, Miami took four of a possible six points in arguably their toughest road trip of the regular season. The Canes took down seventhranked Maryland 1-0 in an overtime thriller at Ludwig Field to open their road weekend, and have taken points in each of their past three matches. Senior Jordan Roseboro’s first goal of the season nine minutes into overtime ensured three points for the visitors. In earning its 2011 tournament berth, the Hurricanes took down ranked opponents in two of their last four regular season contests to finish the fall schedule on a high note. Now, as they prepare for Thursday’s regular season finale at home against in-state rival and second-ranked Florida State, a second straight tournament berth and an appearance in the conference tournament would appear well in sight. University of Miami Traditions UM Sports Hall of Fame highlights of some of Miami’s famous traditions
THE “SMOKE” The traditional Hurricane “smoke” entrance in the Orange Bowl began in the 1950s. In an attempt to increase fan interest, UM transportation director Bob Nalette came up with the idea of using fire extinguishers to produce the now-famous smoke that Hurricanes run through as they enter the field. In his spare time nearly 60 years ago, Nalette welded the pipe together that billowed smoke from the top of the Hurricanes’ entrance tunnel. The original set up included flashing lights, two large hurricane flags and a tape of a hurricane being blasted over the loud speaker. The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation whose sole purpose is to recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have excelled at their sports and brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments and championships.
