Deem Named Head Track Coach for London Olympics The United States Olympic Committee and USA Track and Field (USATF) announced today that the University of Miami’s Director of Track and Field Amy Deem has been selected as the women’s head coach for Team USA’s track and field squad for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. “This is not only an honor, but a testament to 20 years of raising the bar both at the University of Miami and within the track and field industry,” said Miami Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt. “Head coach Amy Deem is an inspiration to the student-athletes at THE U and will fulfill the same standards with the US Olympic Team.” Deem has built the school’s track program from modest beginnings into one of the nation’s elite. Before her arrival, the Hurricanes had never had an athlete record an NCAA qualifying mark. Since 1992, Deem has guided 42 student-athletes to a combined 147 All-America honors and 12 individual National Championships, including 2009 NCAA Indoor 200-meter champion Murielle Ahoure, 2008 NCAA Indoor 400-meter champion Krista Simkins, 2006 NCAA Outdoor triple jump champion Tabia Charles, 2005 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor shot put champion Kim Barrett and 2004 NCAA 100-meter champion Lauryn Williams. “It is a very special honor to represent our country on the biggest international stage,” said Deem. “I am extremely humbled by this opportunity that I have been given by USA Track and Field and the US Olympic Committee. I look forward to the challenges of coaching the USA Track and Field team in 2012. Most recently, Deem guided the current UM senior and five-time All-America selection

Ti’erra Brown to a U.S. National Championship in the 400m hurdles this past summer. The Hurricanes have boasted at least one All-American in each of the last 19 seasons and have claimed seven BIG EAST and ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Now in her 20th season at Miami, Deem has continually raised the bar for the track and field program each season. Under Deem, the Hurricanes have become a fixture at the NCAA Championships, scoring at 18 of 19 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships since 1992. Deem, who served as the head women’s coach for Team USA at the 2007 World Outdoor Championships in Osaka, Japan, served three seasons (1998-2000) as the Event Coordinator for Sprints and Hurdles for the USA Track and Field Coaches Education Program and in 2001 served as head coach of the USA Junior National Team that competed in England and Scotland. In the summer of 2003, Deem served as the Explosive Events Coach (sprints and hurdles) for the United States at the Pan American games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, guiding Lauryn Williams to the gold medal in the 100-meters. In addition, the United States swept the gold medals in the 4x100meter relay and 4x400-meter relay for the first time since 1987. Deem joins diving coach Randy Ableman as the only current coaches at the University of Miami with head coaching experience at the Olympic level. Ableman was the head coach for the Republic of South Africa in 2008 and was a member of the Team USA coaching staff for the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.

Viola Wins 10M, Qualifies for Olympics In her third attempt to make the Olympics, former Miami Hurricane star and Orlando, Fla., native Brittany Viola won the women’s 10-meter platform in the U.S. Olympic Trials at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Centerin Federal Way, Wash., on June 24. Viola entered the finals in first place after scoring 734.30 points on her two 10-meter lists earlier in the week. In the preliminaries, she scored no lower than 72 points on any dive, including a front 3 ½ pike and an armstand double back somersault with 1 ½ twists that both went for more than 80 points. In semifinals, she opened up with a 10 on her front 3 ½ pike for 82.50 points and followed with 88 points on her armstand. Viola dominated the final round, taking the 10-meter by close to 60 points ahead of Katie Bell, who captured the other roster spot for the event. Viola finished with an impressive final score of 1081.50. Viola scored 86.40 on her second-round dive, an armstand back dive from the platform with 2 somersaults and 1 1/2 twists. She scored 80.00 on her final dive, one that clnched the 10-meter title. After finishing in second place during the 2004 trials and fourth in the 2008 trials, Viola successfully qualified for her first-ever Olympics in 2012. One of the most decorated divers in UM history, she captured two NCAA championships and numerous Atlantic Coast Conference championships during a stellar career in orange and green. For her oustanding performance in Washington, she’ll trade in those colors for the chance to don red, white and blue this summer in London.

Leaf & Michel Earn Spots on British Volleyball Team Savanah Leaf and Ciara Michel, both of whom have ties to the University of Miami volleyball program, have each made the roster for Team Great Britain during the Olympic Games, the British Olympic Association (BOA) announced June 29. The two are part of a 12-player roster that will compete for the host nation in hopes of earning a medal for their country. “We are extremely proud to have two Miami volleyball players make the British Olympic Team,” said UM head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “Ciara and Savanah have seized this opportunity to represent their country at the highest level on the biggest stage. This will be an incredible experience for both of them and we look forward to following them in the London.” It will be the first time that Great Britain has ever fielded a volleyball team for the Olympics, having earned an automatic bid to the tournament as the host. “Both the British men’s and women’s teams will be targeting progression to the knock-out stage, as well as providing memorable moments for the home crowd as they look to lay the foundations for a successful fu-

ture for volleyball in Britain,” according to a press release from the BOA. Leaf, the youngest member of the squad at age 18, was born in London and moved to California was she was eight. A two-time MaxPreps California Division V First Team All-State selection at Marin Academy, she matriculated to San Jose State University last year and competed as a freshman for the Spartans. She led the team with 257 kills in 87 sets played, while finishing second.with 230 digs (six doubledoubles). After transferring to UM following the season and participating with the Hurricanes in the spring, she started training with her national team in April. “I only came in this year and the coach [Audrey Cooper] said ‘Just work as hard as you can because it is going to be tough to get into the team because everyone is so tight,’” she told MSN Sport on Friday. “I feel like I have fitted in well and everyone was open in allowing me to be part of the team. I gave it all and I am so proud it paid off so I can represent my family and the country. I have not been able to do that because I have been in America for so long.”

Michel finished her career as Hurricane in 2007 as one of the best players in program history. The middle blocker still holds the school record with 573 blocks in addition to being seventh all-time with 962 kills. Born in Taunton, Somerset, England, she ventured to Australia following graduation to spend two-anda-half years earning a Master’s Degree from the University of Melbourne, while working for a non-profit organization, Foundation for Young Australians, which provides scholarships and education opportunities to underprivileged youth. In the meantime, she found time to play professionally for the Melbourne University Team. She also played professionally for the Alemannia Aachen in Germany, signing a contract in 2010. The Summer Olympics will be the second time Michel will represent her country, having competed for Great Britain last summer in the Latina Cup in Peru. “I was asked to be part of the summer 2011 team, and I got much more acquainted with the team and the system of play, which must be unique in order to compete with long-standing programs from other nations such

as Brazil or Japan,” she told HurricaneSports.com in May. “Tragically, just before I joined, all funding from the government was cut, and the program could have been terminated.” However, the local support and the dedication of the team’s coaching staff help save the program, allowing it to now compete on the largest athletic stage in the world. “A wave of emotion sweeps over you when you realize you’re competing with an entire nation of support behind you,” Michel said. “It’s honestly a little bit overwhelming, but just so exciting.” Great Britain is in Pool A of the 12-team tournament and will play five other countries in a round-robin format to begin. The team will start with a match against Russia on July 28 and will compete every other day against the following teams in order: Algeria, Italy, Dominican Republic and Japan. The top four teams out of the two pools will advance to the quarterfinals in a single-elimination bracket, with the gold medal match scheduled for Aug. 11. Brazil won the gold medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome both the men’s and women’s volleyball squads into Team GB for the London 2012 Olympic Games,” said BOA chief executive Andy Hunt Friday in a statement. “All of these athletes have worked tremendously hard to make this a possibility and we’re confident that we have two squads ready to put on a great display and give a fantastic account of themselves in London. The volleyball players and everyone involved have had to make huge sacrifices to make this a possibility so we all share in their excitement now that the Olympics Games are less than a month away and their selection is made official. “Most importantly, the home Games should act as a springboard for the sport in Britain and allow Team GB to build for the next Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and beyond. It is a superb opportunity to showcase volleyball in this country and I hope that these players can inspire many more youngsters to get involved in the sport and create a lasting legacy from London 2012.”

Williams Named to Third Olympic Team

Former University of Miami track standout Lauryn Williams has been named to Team USA for the third time, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced. Williams will use her experience as a member of the relay pool at the Olympic Games in London. “I think the main thing is understanding the importance of being supportive,” said Williams in regards to being a member of the relay team. “Having been to the Olympics twice and knowing a lot of members on the relay team are going to be on their first team, I really want to help them with my experience and make them realize you shouldn’t make this a bigger event than it really is. In order to be successful, you just have to keep doing the things that have gotten you to this point to help reach the gold medal. I’m looking forward to getting over there and competing for Team USA.”

Williams was the top American finisher in the women’s 100m in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, winning a silver medal in Athens. The sprinter brings relay experience as a member of the 4x100m relay in Athens and Beijing. She is also a three-time world champion and was a nine-time All-American during her time at UM. The Rochester, Pa., native won the 2004 NCAA title and was considered the World’s Fastest Women in 2005. She finished sixth in the 100m dash at the U.S. Trials held recently in Eugene, Ore., putting her in contention to make the relay pool. The lineups for the relays will be set forth by the coaching staff during the Games.

Brown Punches Ticket to London Former University of Miami track standout T’erea Brown punched her ticket to the Olympic Games in London by finishing third in the finals of the 400m hurdles on July 1 at Heyward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. “I don’t even know,” she told NBC regarding how she felt about qualifying. “I’m glad its over, this was all very stressful. However, I did what I had to fight coming home and earn the spot.” Needing to finish in the top three of the competition to make Team USA, Brown did that with a strong finish to clock in at 54.81 - her best time in three races at the Trials. Brown was the first Hurricane to ever win a USA Title at the 2010 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships and also won first place in the 400m hurdles at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The Hampton, Va., native was also named the ACC Women’s Outdoor Track Performer of the Year following her senior season last year. She wrapped her illustrious collegiate career at UM with seven All-America honors. The hurdler will be coached in London by UM Director of Track and Field Amy Deem, who is the head coach of Team USA at the Games. Fellow Hurricanes Dominique Darden also ran in the finals of the 400m hurdles in lane eight, coming in eighth place with a time of 55.89. The placing did not qualify her for the Olympics.

Ableman Named U.S. Diving Assistant Coach Miami Hurricanes’ head diving coach Randy Ableman will be joining University of Miami alum Brittany Viola and the rest of the U.S. Olympic Diving Team as an assistant coach in London. Ableman, who coached the South African diving team at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, served on the U.S. coaching staff for the 1996 (Atlanta), 2000 (Sydney) and 2004 (Athens) Olympic Games. The nine-time NCAA Diving Coach of the Year, who has coached 12 NCAA Champions during his 22 seasons at the helm of the Hurricanes’ program, marks his return to the U.S. staff alongside one of his most decorated graduates. In her third attempt to make the Olympics, Viola won the women’s 10-meter platform at the U.S. Olympic Trials in late June. After finishing the event in second place during the 2004 trials and fourth in 2008, the Orlando, Fla. native won the event by close to 60 points to earn her first-ever spot on the Olympic roster. Under the direction of Coach Ableman, Viola won two NCAA championships and multiple Atlantic Coast Conference Championships as a student-athlete at the University of Miami. Diving competition in London will span nearly the entirety of the Olympic schedule, beginning with the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard on July 29 and ending with the semifinals and finals of the men’s 10-meter platform on August 11.
