Safety First

Minimize Conveyor Injury Risks with Safeguarding

While conveyor belts are integral facets of the distribution process and most warehouses could not function without them, they also pose the potential to cause serious injuries and sometimes even fatalities. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that over 40 workplace fatalities a year are the result of conveyor accidents, along with 9,000 injuries. While in motion, conveyor systems have inherent and obvious dangers. Belts continuously move at speeds up to 600 feet per minute or 10 feet per second. There are many pinch-points within their machinery, any of which could cause an injury to a worker. Common employee injuries incurred working with conveyors include arm and hand amputations, finger lacerations, burns, scrapes and broken bones. Even when employees are being careful, accidents can happen. It’s easy for loose clothing, jewelry or hair to get trapped in conveyor belts. If workers aren’t paying attention, they could get caught in the machine. Every conveyor belt injury in a warehouse is costly, affecting worker morale, availability of trained labor lost production, and increased overhead due to insurance premiums, along with mountains of paperwork, lawsuits and possible fines from government regulatory agencies. Conveyor belt injuries account for nearly 25% of all workers’ compensation claims. Safeguarding conveyors protect employees from injuries and companies from potential financial ruin.

Safeguarding Conveyors Safety considerations for conveyor design are detailed in ASME B20.1-2018: Safety Standard For Conveyors And Related Equipment. ASME B20.1-2018 applies to the design, construction, installation, maintenance, inspection, and operation of conveyors and conveying systems in relation to hazards. The conveyors covered can be bulk material, package, or unit-handling types installed for permanent, temporary, or portable operation. OSHA has also issued its own standard 1926.555(s)(1), General Conveyor Safety Requirements. In many cases, local municipalities and equipment manufacturers will require standards above and beyond ASME and OSHA be met. Because conveyor designs vary, each conveyor should be evaluated to determine what primary safeguarding methods and energy control practices are required. For instance, a chain conveyor introduces the hazards of nip points when a chain contacts a sprocket. As a result, the primary safeguarding method would be enclosing the moving chains. If this isn’t possible, barrier guards can be installed around moving points so that nip and shear

points can be eliminated by a guard. Secondary guarding options would include safeguarding by distance or the use of awareness devices. Rather than concentrate on specific details of unique conveyor designs, for the purpose of this article, we are going to look only at three basic requirements of conveyor safeguarding: emergency stops, guards and motor starters. Emergency Stops: The only conveyors that don’t require emergency stops or “e-stops” are ones mounted

Safety First continued more than eight feet above the working surface since those are guarded by their elevation, a situation called “guarded by location.” Conveyors that are accessible to operators must be equipped with e-stops. According to both ASME B20.1-2018, remotely and automatically controlled conveyors where operator stations are not manned or beyond contact shall be furnished with emergency stop buttons, pull cords, limit switches or similar emergency stop devices. As a general rule of thumb, an operator should be able to stop any conveyor within his or her line of sight by activating the nearest emergency stop. ASME also requires that all emergency stop circuits should fail in the event of a power loss to the emergency stop circuit. Employees must be familiar with the location and function of e-stops to allow them to make fast decisions on using them. E-stop training should be provided to all employees regarding where they are located when to use them, and how to access them. As for restart, OSHA requires that “emergency stop switches shall be arranged so that the conveyor cannot be started again until the actuating stop switch has been reset to running or ‘on’ position.” ASME goes further, requiring that the starting device be locked out or tagged before any attempt is made to remove the cause of the stoppage. Besides having the activated emergency stop switch or pull cord reset, an audible warning signal must be sounded immediately before starting up the conveyor. Depending upon the size of the conveyor, multiple start buttons may need to be activated. Modern conveyors may feature a Human Machine Interface (HMI) that allows operators to remotely identify the location of the tripped emergency stop on a display. Once the local emergency stop has been reset, the system can be remotely restarted via the HMI. Finally, e-stops should never be modified for any reason by unqualified personnel. Monitor e-stops to ensure employees have not misused, modified, or disconnected them. Guards: ASME B20.1-2018 requires conveyor with accessible nip points on spools and pulleys be guarded to prevent contact by a worker, and that a conveyor has guards or sideboards to prevent material from falling from the conveyor into areas occupied by workers if the falling material presents a hazard of impact injury or burn. Barriers, 8

enclosures, grating, fences, or other obstructions that prevent physical contact with conveyor components are considered to be guards. When the guard is used as the primary safeguarding method, a guard opening scale can be used to ensure no employee cannot reach under, over, around, or through the guard. Any openings created by the guards must be checked for compliance with ANSI/ CSA safety standards. Handrailing is not acceptable to limit access to a pinch point as it can be breached easily. Most serious accidents and fatalities involving conveyors result from inadequate guarding. Guards are sometimes removed by plant employees for maintenance purposes, or because they obstruct an employee’s access to doing work, exposing sharp machinery, gears, chains, and moving parts that are extremely dangerous. To help ensure worker safety, lockout conveyors when in service, and operate equipment only when all approved covers and guards have been reinstalled. Lockout/Tagout: Conveyors are widely thought to not require a lockout/tagout procedure, which is incorrect. According to the OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, OSHA expects that all equipment with more than one energy source, including energy that can be locked and energy that must be dissipated manually, must require a machine-specific procedure. Conveyors have both electrical energy and kinetic energy. Additionally, adjacent equipment feeding the conveyor can cause a hazard if still running during conveyor service. According to OSHA data, workers who operate conveyors, packaging equipment and printing presses experience the highest number of accidents associated with lockout/tagout failures. Whenever a conveyor is under repair or maintenance, it must be stopped with power sources locked out and tagged out. Exceptions may be given to conveyors that need power for testing or making minor adjustments. For more about “alternative LOTO measures” consult ANSI/ ASSE Z244.1 for expanded guidance beyond OSHA’s regulatory limitation to tasks that are “routine, repetitive and integral to production operations”. Following the Hierarchy of Control model, ANSI/ASSE Z244.1 provides detailed guidance on if, when, and how a range of alternative control methods can be applied to result in equal or improved protection for people performing specific tasks. When it comes to conveyor service, maintenance work should only be carried out by fully trained, highly qualified professionals. These professionals will ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures are followed, and to block or disengage all power sources to the conveyor — electrical, hydraulic, air and gravity. Keep in mind that

Safety First continued even the best trained technicians are occasionally injured by a conveyor. Untrained staff should never attempt a conveyor system repair. Final Thoughts As with any industrial equipment, conveyors are capable of causing grave injuries if not safeguarded according to established standards. However, it is equally important that employees working around conveyor systems are trained regarding potential hazards. Constant vigilance and a safeguarded conveyor are vital to keeping your warehouse and facility safe.

Accidents Happen

What Your Company Should Do After an OSHA Violation or Workplace Injury

You address all of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) standards: you make sure that safety equipment is supplied and used, warning signs are placed in proper areas, and you regularly brief your employees about the importance of safety . . . yet it still happens. It’s only a matter of time before you have a workplace violation or injury. What can do you to make sure accidents don’t happen, and if they do, what is the best strategy to get through the ordeal? What about an OSHA violation? Let’s examine the best practices to perform that will save you money and promote the welfare of your entire workforce. Common Workplace Injuries Injuries do occur, all of the time. It is estimated that a workplace injury happens in the United States every seven seconds, accounting for close to 5 million injuries per year. Most injuries can be avoided with a few preventative measures which should already be in place due to OSHA mandates. Let’s go through a few of the most common injuries and the best ways to prevent them: • Provide personal fall protection, clean up hazardous spills and debris, and use markings to ensure that people will not fall into holes and are aware of uneven surfaces. • Being struck by objects projected in the air by a person or machinery, or from above. Clean up materials that that could become projectiles, post warning signs, and provide protective equipment including hard hats and goggles. 10

September 2020

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

• Getting entangled in machinery. Place barriers and signs around dangerous machinery, train employees on the proper use of equipment, make sure machine guarding is properly in place, and that the machine is anchored properly. • Make sure all electrical hazards are identified and employees are warned in advance. Train all employees of the proper shut-off procedures of equipment to avoid perilous electrical discharges. With proper precautions in place and well-informed employees, many common on-the-job injuries can be avoided. Be Prepared To avoid these injures, impart the notion of “safety first” from a new crew member’s first day. Make sure your onboarding process includes your company’s stance on safety and include safety rules and policies that are set in place by you or OSHA. Take your new hires around the facility and point out warehouse safety signs and what they mean so there is no misunderstanding. Also, make sure that your new employee knows from day one what to do if any injury or accident occurs. Another way to prevent workplace injuries is to pay attention to employee complaints. If violations occur, your employees are on the front lines and may see more than you do. Ensure that there is a section in the employee handbook on how such complaints will be dealt with, have an impartial investigator thoroughly look into matters, and make sure the employee who made the complaint has ample time to talk to the investigator. If the investigator determines the complaint is valid, detail what the company is going to do to remedy the problem and make sure those steps are carried out. Other Workplace Hazards There are other, unseen dangers in the workplace to also keep in mind: • Noise pollution can be caused by indoor or outdoor machinery or things you have no control over such as an airplane overhead. Noise can cause loss of concentration as well as hearing loss and needs to be reduced if possible. • Air quality issues include poor moisture control or exposure to harmful chemicals or toxins in the air.

Health Nudge

The Fact is, This Experience Changed Us Forever

In our lifetime, we will have thousands of experiences that will affect and change us. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic was an experience shared by the world. This pandemic had no boundaries or borders and everyone’s lives were affected. The fact is, this experience changed us forever. The physical, psychological and financial hardships took a toll. Resilience prevailed and gave way to a new perspective and way of living. Change is the one constant in life and change can be good. Lessons are learned from experiences and life can be better as a result of the challenges and unfortunate events we face. Imagine the journey of an athlete. Every loss provides an opportunity for growth and to see things from a different perspective. A warrior mindset sees difficult challenges as stepping stones to learn and improve. Tom Bodett’s quote provides insight into life tests: “The difference between school and life? In school, you’re taught a lesson then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson.” There are plenty of life lessons we can learn from the great pause of 2020. At TVH, we relied on our core 14

company values. We found new ways to connect and come together. We shared our struggles, our victories and our hope; and soon realized we were not alone. We came together to help each other in any way we could. Random Acts of Kindness were widespread. People left encouraging chalk messages on sidewalks and driveways. People shared food and household items with those in need. Empathy, love and encouragement united and lifted each other’s spirits. In our fast-paced world full of obligations and demands on our time, being on lockdown brought almost everything to a halt. During this time, we took the opportunity to practice self-care. It’s amazing how the human body can adapt and survive even when basic needs aren’t met. However, there will eventually be a health issue if neglect and abuse are on-going. An interesting byproduct of this situation is that we finally took the time to take care of ourselves. Some took this opportunity to get active, eat healthier and make changes to improve their health. Data from various activity tracker companies showed the hours slept during the COVID-19 epidemic increased. Sleep deprivation is a huge culprit in health issues. Sleep may be free but prioritizing it falls under self-care and only the individual can make that happen. In addition to taking care of ourselves, we also took care of our relationships. From home life to the workplace and our communities, people came to understand humans crave connection over isolation. Families and friends communicated more through phone calls or virtual calls via Zoom or FaceTime. Neighborhoods connected with people talking, walking and waving at each other. Coworkers made a point to reach out to each other to make sure everything was OK. As a way to control the spread of the virus, social distancing and business closures or modifications dramatically impacted the economy. As a result, we took a hard look at our financial health. Spending habits changed from ‘I

The effects of COVID-19 will linger for months and possibly years. May the memories of this unusual time also be filled with many powerful lifestyle reminders: • Slow down. Relax. Be in the moment. • Relish your relationships and invest time in them. • Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential to your well-being. • Live a lifestyle that lies within your financial means; less debt equals less stress. Creating a Productive and Efficient Warehouse

Running a productive warehouse is crucial because failing to achieve that aim often leads to internal problems that span outside the facility and affect customers. Prolonged unproductivity can also frustrate team members, causing high turnover rates and low morale. Fortunately, there are actionable steps to take so that your teams and your business run smoothly and keep output levels high. 1. Choose and Monitor Key Performance Indicators You can’t know for sure where opportunities for improvement exist without knowing your starting point. That’s why it’s useful to measure key performance indicators — KPIs — to see where you are now and how much progress you need to make to see meaningful improvements. Some of the KPIs you may track could include metrics about the lead time, order accuracy, return rates, and warehouse revenue per employee. Track each KPI, then research how far your average performance is from the ideal. Keep in mind that you won’t likely see huge KPI changes from month to month — at least in the beginning. The idea is to achieve steady progress in the right direction. 2. Consider Asset-Tracking Solutions Misplaced or lost goods can eat up valuable time in warehouses, making productivity plummet. This problem can also negatively affect profits if temperature-sensitive items get wrongly moved to an area of the facility without adequate climate controls. Options such as smart tags and the Internet of Things (IoT) sensors could help warehouse members curb problems associated with products in the wrong places. 18

Warehouse professionals should pursue asset tracking best practices, including determining which data sources to monitor. Warehouse personnel should also decide whether to implement tracking tech solely in the warehouse or on the vehicles carrying the goods, too. 3. Investigate Voice Technology Many people frequently use voice recognition tools on their phones to learn about local businesses, set alarms or get answers to measurement questions while cooking. Voice technology impacts more than consumers at home, however. Many companies want to integrate voice technology into a warehouse management system (WMS) or use it to facilitate faster warehouse picking strategies. Voice systems in the warehouse realm are getting even more advanced as companies investigate what’s possible. Some enterprises want to make their autonomous mobile robots respond to voice cues, while others use the technology to optimize workforces and provide analytics for managers. The hands-free aspect of voice-enabled tech is one of its leading advantages. Company leaders should ask workers about their most labor-intensive tasks and whether voice cues could help. 4. Analyze How to Make Traffic Flow Improvements You can also make your facility a more productive warehouse by examining anything that could impede the smooth flow of traffic. Doing that boosts efficiency, and it could avoid injuries. Slips, trips and falls account for 95 million lost workdays per year when people get hurt. Are there stray cords, cracks in the floor or scattered tools interfering with how people move around the warehouse? They cause slowdowns and increase the risk of accidents. Warehouse managers should also study the placement

A Clean HVAC Decreases Disease Development Viruses, Molds and Bacteria Oh My! Four Ways to Combat Pathogens in Your HVAC System

“Jake” owns and runs a small commercial shop. He has been coughing a lot and is growing concerned as his employees have been calling in sick with sinus problems and “bronchitis”. He calls his friend “Rick”, who operates a different business but in the same block. To Jake’s surprise, Rick and his workers have not missed any time from work. While Rick’s employees have been healthy, Jake’s problems are just beginning! A customer notices “black stuff” around an HVAC register, so Jake calls an HVAC duct cleaner, who discovers black mold (stachybotrys – the worst kind of mold). The HVAC firm is required to inform the city’s health department, who quarantine Jake’s building until mold abatement is complete. This process takes two weeks and costs Jake $15,000 plus the lost business! When Jake reopens, customers remain leery of returning to the shop even though the mold problem no longer exists. Jake’s business ultimately closes permanently – as do 90% of businesses caught in such a situation. Rick tells a depressed Jake that he should have had a whole building SMART ventilation system like the one he has at his business – or at the very least an HVAC UV coil sanitizer, like another local WS2

shop owner, “Joe.” How do such systems and devices work and how might they have kept Jake from going out of business? And why is controlling the growth of mold and bacteria an important issue for any businessperson?:

Sanitizing Your System Fortunately, there are proven ways to sanitize your HVAC system, but if the wrong type of device is chosen, or the wrong size is installed, the science shows they just don’t work. Here are the benefits and limitations of each: 1. HVAC UV Coil Sanitizers Benefits • Uses UV light, to kill viruses, bacteria and mold on the HVAC condenser coil and drip pan • Eliminates viruses, mold and bacteria in ducts by removing the source on the coil • Must meet three criteria to be effective: 1. MUST be Type C UV light (aka UVC light) 2. MUST provide 30 watts of UVC light power at 12 inches from the light source (40-watt bulb or equivalent) located no further than 18 inches from the furthest part of the coil

Warehouse Solutions 3. MUST SHINE light on all sides of the coil (at least two bulbs, top & bottom) Limitations Most DIY and even professionally installed UV sanitizers fail to meet all three criteria. For instance, most only have one 20-watt bulb, which is too little to be effective as a sanitizer. 2. Ozone Generators Benefits • Introduce charged ozone molecules into the air INSIDE the device, which in turn creates a charge on airborne particles such as dust, pollen, viruses, mold, bacterial spores, and smoke particles. These charged particles become trapped in a removable filter or degrade due to the damage caused by the ozone. • Most professionally installed units are properly sized for the HVAC unit and do a great job. Limitations • Most DIY ozone generators do not provide enough ozone to sanitize the coil and ducts. In addition, ozone leaves the device mixed with the “cleaned” air. This ozone contributes to poor indoor air quality – essentially trading one problem for another one. 3. Whole Building Whole Building SMART Ventilation Systems Benefits • Monitor outdoor and indoor air quality and exchanging the indoor air for outdoor air when the outdoor air quality in better than the indoor air quality. • Expel airborne particles (dust, pollen, viruses, mold, bacterial spores, and smoke) with the exhausted stale indoor air. • Expel gasses like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pollutant gases, odors, CO2, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfurous gasses, nitrogenous gasses, radon, etc. with the exhausted stale indoor air. • Optimize the indoor air quality based on the best available air quality, adding outdoor humidity as needed or expelling air when the indoor humidity is subpar.

• Utilize outdoor air instead of running the compressor, when outdoor temperatures are appropriate to cool or heat the indoor space, thus extending coil drying time and eliminating the water required for mold and bacteria growth. 4) Probiotic Air Cleaners Benefits • Portable devices ideal for use in a single room. • Like any ultrasonic mister, these devices can produce a mist cloud large enough to fill a standard-size private office. • Supposedly spray “beneficial” bacteria into the air. Limitations • Claim that the probiotic bacteria cancel out bad bacteria on surfaces, thus reducing illnesses. But for this to work, bacteria would need to grow to significant (slimy) levels on surfaces. While this may occur on wet surfaces, most surfaces in businesses are dry, and the bacteria would die in minutes or hours without significant growth. • They have no effect on pollen, viruses, mold, dust, smoke or VOCs. • They add humidity to the building and water to the HVAC system. • While probiotics may have health benefits, there is no scientific evidence that probiotics will help your HVAC health. Summary When it comes to combatting mold and bacteria in your HVAC system, professionally installed systems sized correctly and maintained annually can and will remove the problem before costly damage is done to furnishings, building or your health. Had Jake done so, maybe his printing shop would still be in business. Jonathan Carson is a certified HVAC contractor and a founder of the Lake Wales, FL-based Natural Air E-Controls, LLC (www.naturalair. com). Natural Air E-Controls, LLC designs and builds HVAC control systems that enable the building’s HVAC equipment to provide fresh air and remove pollutants by taking in outdoor air in amounts needed to improve indoor air quality while saving on heating and cooling bills.

Identifying and Protecting your Warehouse from Electrical Hazards

Electrical systems for warehouses are designed to handle a variety of power demands; from heavy lighting, requirements to operating machinery and even vehicles. Apart from reducing the risk of workplace injuries, it’s important to have the right electrical items, fixtures, and even safety devices to ensure you meet all the required regulations or you could end up facing heavy penalties. There are quite a few things that contribute to electrical hazards in a warehouse. Here are some of the most common ones you should be aware of: • Overloaded Circuits- Subjecting a fixture or even wires to more load than they’re designed to handle can result in short-circuits and fires • Frayed or Torn Wires- Power cords can naturally wear out over time and crack or fray, but they often also get dragged, pulled and even stepped on • Outlets near Conductors- Electrical outlets installed near water sources or other conductors, as well as areas where they may be exposed to splashes, pose a huge risk • Failure to Install Lockout Devices- There are always going to be certain areas which pose a high risk and lockout devices prevent access by unauthorized persons WS10

September 2020

Warehouse Solutions

www.MHNetwork.com

• Carelessness or Human Error- A lot of injuries and even death resulting from electrical hazards are the result of employees being careless or a lack of electrical safety training • Lack of Equipment Maintenance- Improperly maintained electrical equipment and an inadequate inspection routine is also a contributor to electrical hazards • Inadequate Grounding and Safety Features- A faulty electrical grounding system and a lack of interrupters like GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) or AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) pose tremendous risks to life and property

The OSHA and Why It’s Important for Your Warehouse The OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is a regulatory body that defines and enforces guidelines to reduce accidents which could cause injuries or fatalities. The electrical wiring and systems are also under the purview of the OSHA guidelines. If your warehouse’s electrical system doesn’t conform to the guidelines, you may end up with a citation from OSHA.

Warehouse Solutions Here are 7 things you should definitely be doing to improve Electrical safety in your warehouse: 1. Timely Maintenance of Electrical Equipment- Have a qualified technician routinely inspect and test your electrical equipment and carry out any preventative maintenance and repairs on time. 2. Replace Damaged Wires, Outlets and Lockout Devices- Inspect the electrical system and wiring frequently and repair or replace any fixtures or lockout devices that appear to be damaged and any wires that look frayed or worn out. 3. Install Adequate Safety Devices- GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) are a life-saving device so make sure they are regularly tested. AFCIs and circuit breakers can also prevent fires, so select them carefully based on the load and the environment. 4. Invest in Safety Training Programs- Have a comprehensive safety program which includes electrical safety and invests in periodic training for your employees. 5. Perform Safety Audits Regularly- Apart from the regular inspections, perform a thorough audit at least once a year, which should even include fire inspections.

6. Plan for Severe Weather- You may need a plan for safeguarding your warehouse from weather events like lightning, which can cause power surges that could damage your equipment and are an electrical hazard. 7. Ensure Employees use PPE and Proper Equipment for Electrical Work- Personal protective equipment for electrical work can include Flame-resistant clothing, safety glasses, gloves, etc and these must be used when necessary. It’s easy to understand why electrical safety is extremely important for your warehouse. It really is a matter of ‘a stitch in time saves nine’, and whether it’s for regulatory purposes, ensuring the safety of your employees or to prevent costly downtime and repairs, it should never be overlooked. Jeson Pitt works with the marketing department of D&F Liquidators and regularly writes to share his knowledge while enlightening people about electrical products and solving their electrical dilemmas. He’s got the industry insights that you can count on along with years of experience in the field. Jeson lives in Hayward, CA and loves to explore different cuisines that the food trucks in the Bay area have to offer.

Orbital Wrapper Secures Stackable The TAB Wrapper Tornado orbital wrapping system from packaging machinery manufacturer TAB Industries, LLC, Reading, Pa. compresses stackable, nestable parts together, presses them into the pallet, and provides vital side support to create a stable pallet load that resists sliding during transport and remains intact upon arrival. Wrapping plastic film 360 degrees under and around the pallet and its load, the TAB Wrapper Tornado combines both top down compression and lateral rigidity to replace both horizontal wrappers, which cannot provide compression, and strapping and banding, which risk tearing the box or container and damaging the product, especially as the load weight increases. Ideal for protecting aluminum, copper, ferrous and other metal parts fabricated in stackable shapes, the clever packaging system eliminates the potential for scratches, scuffs and other damage from part to part contact that commonly occurs when parts shift and jostle unchecked inside a container. www.tabwrapper.com

Cover Story continued Warehouse managers should also study the placement of shelves, workstations, and other prominent parts of a building’s setup. Checking to see whether the current layout contributes to wasted time, extra steps or delays could give new insights into possible efficiency improvements. 5. Foster a Culture of Continuous Improvement Since there are numerous effective ways to enhance warehouse efficiency, you won’t find a single, magic solution. Similarly, it’s vital to show employees that better efficiency requires a team effort. It’s not adequate to only task managers with making the changes you want to see. Everyone should get involved, and it’s ideal if they genuinely understand the benefits of their contributions. Empower employees by setting challenging but achievable targets. Review their metrics periodically, and ideally more frequently than at annual reviews. You could also think about offering productivity bonuses. People always appreciate getting something extra for their commitment and hard work, and setting specific levels for pay increases puts them in control by clarifying expectations. 6. Give Employees the Equipment and Knowledge They Need to Succeed Your warehouse could become a more effective facility if workers have training and equipment to help them work productively without increasing risk. Ensure that workers know how to reach for items above them without twisting their spines and coach them how to lift objects without straining their backs. Get input from them about what equipment investments you could make to increase work output. Carts can assist with pushing heavy loads, while lifts and pulleys can aid people with managing heavy or awkward items. You may even purchase wearables that detect when workers get too fatigued and need to rest. When the workforce believes and sees that a company genuinely invests in them, they’ll feel more motivated to give their all during every shift. 7. Build a Chatbot to Handle Common Queries Artificial intelligence is impacting the supply chain in a wide variety of ways, and use cases will only increase as the technology improves. If your warehouse workers spend substantial amounts of time repeatedly answering similar queries, a chatbot could relieve some of the associated burdens. It can’t deal with complex or unusual questions effectively, but the tool could still help you have a productive warehouse.

20

September 2020

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

Think about a case where a customer could ask a chatbot when a shipment left the warehouse. They might also use it to confirm their desire to have a recurring order sent out as soon as possible. If a chatbot connects to a WMS used by a retail store, sales floor team members could enter prompts to immediately check stock levels or trigger reorder requests. 8. Explore How Predictive Analytics May Help Warehouse managers would love to gaze into crystal balls to see the future. They can have the next best thing with predictive analytics. Perhaps unexpected stock outages, demand surges and seasonal fluctuations caused some of your past inefficiency woes. If so, technology could find trends you’d otherwise miss, facilitating future improvements. Predictive analytics platforms assess vast quantities of data, providing insights that help you plan and adapt. It could show which products should be among the fastestselling items in the month ahead or predict which regions of the country or world are most likely to request the components or finished merchandise your warehouse supplies for those areas. A More Productive Warehouse Is in Reach These actionable strategies illustrate that while there are some things out of your control, you can make a big difference in making your facility more efficient and better-equipped to serve customers. All these suggestions take time to pay off, but you should find they’re worthwhile. Megan R. Nichols is an industrial writer and blogger. Three Ways Propane Forklifts Keep Crews More Productive Maximize warehouse productivity with propanepowered forklifts

Warehouse operations are often the heart of a company. Keeping inventory moving day-in and day-out is a big job with warehouses having so many moving parts. It’s critically important to ensure seamless, efficient operation at all costs.Guy holding Propane tank Ineffective or unreliable material handling equipment can directly impact warehouse productivity, cause errors and delays, and affect customer loyalty. Fortunately, propanepowered forklifts offer key benefits over other options, giving crews the advantages they need to get the job done safely and efficiently. Here are three ways propane forklifts help keep crews more productive: 1. Propane forklifts are versatile. Forklift operators don’t want to juggle multiple fuel types to complete different types of tasks. Here’s the good news: Propane can get more done in more places. Propane forklifts are available in all weight classes to match the job at hand while electric can’t carry the weight of large jobs and diesel isn’t fit for small tasks. Plus, propane-powered forklifts can operate effectively indoors and out and, according to data from the 22

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

Propane Education & Research Council, the majority of forklift fleets operate both indoors and outdoors. Wellmaintained propane forklifts actually meet or exceed nationwide indoor air quality standards, whereas gasoline and diesel can produce higher amounts of carbon monoxide and other harmful emissions. 2. Propane forklifts provide reliable, nonstop power. Propane has been powering forklifts for decades and its proven performance is one of the reasons it’s the first choice of fuel for warehouses of all kinds across the country. Propane forklifts — unlike electric models — don’t lose power throughout the workday and provide 100 percent power throughout operation. And according to data from PERC, propane forklifts can push heavy loads at full capacity longer than electric forklifts. 3. Crews can count on maximum uptime with propane’s quick, easy refueling. Propane forklifts provide the quick refueling needed to keep material moving, whether in large operations or smaller fleets. Most businesses, especially those that operate 24/7, don’t have downtime. With propane, crews can work an entire eight-hour shift on one full cylinder and when the cylinder is empty, they can simply swap it out for a full one and continue working. Forklift operators don’t have to schedule downtime for recharging, like with electric equipment. Additionally, companies operating with propane equipment can set up a tailored refueling schedule with their local propane supplier to ensure that their propane cylinder cages are always full. Visit Propane.com/Forklifts to learn more about the benefits of propane-powered forklifts. Product Showcase CLARK Material Handling Partners with Flux Power to Supply Lithium-Ion Batteries

The exacting standards of Flux Power provides CLARK with a competitive product that meets the extensive needs of CLARK Dealers and end-users. “Flux Power is a great addition that well-complements our existing battery line-up. This partnership will provide customers with a maintenance-free alternative that reduces owner operating costs,” Chwasz added. www.clarkmhc.com

Verti-Lift introduces their complete lineup of Hydraulic and Pneumatic lift tables equipped with an optional turntable which keep workpieces close at hand. Eliminating unnecessary reaching and other operator movements enhance ergonomics and can speed production. Proven Verti-Lift positioners are available in various lift capacities, base and turntable sizes, and vertical travel. ECCO Launches Electric Vehicle Alert System

Fairbanks Scales FB4000 Instruments Enable Predictive Cutoff Applications

Starting in September, allelectric, hybrid, fuel cell and battery-powered vehicles operating on public roads are required to emit a running noise like vehicles with an internal combustion engine. ECCO is introducing the Electric Vehicle Alert System® (EVAS) to help vehicle manufacturers comply with federal regulations in style. With a system that exceeds standards and offers a library of custom tones, EVAS is designed to keep pedestrians safe while allowing automakers to develop their own audible brand. www.eccosafetygroup.com

Typical filling applications turn off the flow of materials when a specified setpoint weight has been reached. With Predictive Cutoff, the FB4000 constantly monitors the rate of weight change on the scale and predicts the value between display updates on-screen; if the setpoint will be reached between updates, the FB4000 does not wait to stop the flow. This results in more accurate filling weights, saving time and expense regardless of the filling or batching application. www.fairbanks.com

Dana Unveils New Electric Motor, Drive Axle for Lift Trucks The new technologies demonstrate how Dana offers modular systems that support both bolton and fully integrated approaches to vehicle design. Dana’s flexibility helps manufacturers reduce system complexity, shorten the time to develop and introduce new products, and facilitate the introduction of innovations into the vehicle life cycle. Dana has a deep portfolio of Spicer® axles, transmissions, and driveshafts for traditional applications driven by internal-combustion engines, as well as a full range of electric motors, inverters, and controllers for low- and high-voltage applications ranging from 24 to 800 volts. Dana has launched a new 48- to 120/144-volt synchronous reluctance internal permanent magnet (SRIPM) motor targeted for Class I electric lift trucks, sideloaders, and mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs). Delivering up to 95 percent efficiency, the motor prolongs battery life and extends duty cycles by delivering higher power density than the AC motors typically used in these applications. www.dana.com

Simple, Mobile Temperature Screening Station

Push notifications: From the Control Room to Your Ear

Creform Corporation has developed a new simple temperature screening station to help companies combat the spread of COVID-19 and to safely check visitors coming into its facilities, as well as an ongoing check on its employee associates. The station acts as a checkpoint and features a clear panel to keep the screener and incoming individual separate while the temperature is taken thru a hole in the center of Plexiglas. The unit also features a small table surface to hold thermometer, cleaning supplies and recording documents. www.eccosafetygroup.com

This feature allows staff in the control room to communicate directly with individual workers or a team of workers, regardless of their current location in the warehouse. This makes it possible to share important messages during operations without drops in productivity. The system features two methods of communication, together with two priority levels. As well as sending text messages, the microphone in the smart glasses can be used to send voice messages between the control room and workers. The control room can also prioritize messages. . www.picavi.com/en

Hyster Launches Wearable Sensor-Driven Solution As businesses reopen with social distancing protocols in place, Hyster Company announces a proximity tag solution to help promote compliance. The system uses wearable tags that vibrate whenever personnel get too close to each other, based on input from proximity sensors and predetermined distance settings. “From the shop floor to the conference room, businesses are taking action to address health and safety concerns as people get back to work,” says Steven LaFevers, Vice President, Emerging Technology, Hyster Company. “The proximity tag solution is an effective choice to promote social distancing throughout an organization, offering a simple yet effective technology platform at an attractive value. The alert effectively grabs user attention, but remains hushed to avoid fatigue and frustration that might risk employees abandoning the technology.” Implementing the proximity tag solution does not require use of Wi-Fi or a cellular network, with tags instead of communicating via ultra-wideband technology. When the sensor detects one or more individuals within 6 feet of one another, all tags in proximity vibrate to alert wearers of the need to keep their distance. www.hyster-yale.com www.MHNetwork.com

Industry News KION Group Records Strong Order Intake

Ranko Equipment Now Offering LiuGong NA Forklift

With its broad corporate strategy and comprehensive intralogistics portfolio, the KION Group has been able to stay on course even in the extremely difficult market conditions created by the global coronavirus pandemic. The Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) segment, with its focus on automation solutions, was able to build on the positive performance of previous quarters in the first half of 2020 and generated a strong boost in orders for the Group in the second quarter. The positive performance of the SCS segment was driven in particular by strong demand in the e-commerce and the food and beverage logistics sectors. Conversely, the current reluctance to invest that is being experienced in many industries hit new businesses in the Industrial Trucks & Services (IT&S) segment particularly hard. “The strong order intake in the first six months of this challenging year shows that our broad product range and KION 2027 strategy have put us on the right course to navigate these choppy waters,” stressed Gordon Riske, Chief Executive Officer of KION GROUP AG. “The KION Group has a highly resilient business model. As an active full-service provider in more than 100 countries, we are in a position to successfully exploit opportunities even in a global crisis of this magnitude.” www.kiongroup.com

Ranko Equipment of Des Moines, Iowa, is now an authorized dealer of LiuGong North America (LiuGong NA) Forklift Division’s product line. Eva Erixon, Ranko Equipment President and co-founder, said the line of forklifts offered through LiuGong North America adds to a full range of solutions Ranko offers its customers, many representing the agriculture industry. Erixon said: “We take a pride in our service department that is very responsive to our customer’s needs. Ranko is committed to offering the same excellent service for LiuGong forklifts as for other lines we offer. With help of LiuGong North America and their excellent dealer support and warranty, Ranko can keep its LiuGong customers up and running.” www.liugongna.com

Industry News Baumann Delivers For Lockheed Martin The latest deal continues the company’s long-term working relationship with Baumann USA, and was concluded under Lockheed Martin’s stringent quality requirements for suppliers, with representatives overseeing the manufacturing process and applying rigorous testing procedures. Carrying a long load with a traditional counterbalance forklift presents a number of difficulties, particularly where safety is a key concern. It is difficult to see the width of a load when moving forward with the forks lowered. Traveling with the forks raised, however, is incredibly dangerous, and the main cause of tipping accidents. Sideloaders travel forwards with the load secure at the side. Traveling long distances or through narrow doorways and aisles is therefore simple. www.baumann-sideloaders.com
