MHEDA Convention

A message from the 2022 Chair of the MHEDA Convention & Exhibitor Showcase

John & Christina Gelsimino

It is exciting to think that the 2022 MHEDA Convention and Exhibitor Showcase is right around the corner in sunny Orlando Florida! It is an honor and privilege to be the 2022 MHEDA Convention Chair and we have built one tremendous convention program for our members. If you haven’t noticed, change is everywhere. . . With this change comes enormous opportunity for “Tomorrow’s Distributor” which of course is this year’s convention theme. It is critical for the entire industry; distributors, integrators, manufacturers, and OEMs to all network and figure out how to best capitalize on tomorrow - today. Take a glance at this year’s agenda of high-level programming. We have covered every point listed on the 2022 Material Handling Business Trends and then some. We have tweaked the formats to maximize the experience for all levels of the organization. The DiSC Report results will be analyzed this year during a workshop followed by roundtable discussions. We even changed the closing party format from banquet style to high-quality food stations to allow for additional interaction and create a new-experience vibe. The reason you should attend the convention is to Expand Your Network, Educate Your Associates

and Elevate Your Bottom Line. It is important to properly value all aspects of the convention. I have more stories of value that I could share than this magazine has pages. Instead of sharing these, here are some questions for you to consider. What is the value of building relationships and expanding your network? What is the value of one great idea that you bring back and implement? What is the value of feeling refreshed and re-energized? What is the value of learning about industry developments and innovations before your competition? What is the value of learning how your organization’s financial performance compares to other top performers in the industry? Where else can you go and extract this much value? What is the value of gathering In Person, connecting with people, and having a great time? PRICELESS! Being able to work alongside the MHEDA staff and participate in the process of building this year’s convention was remarkable. This is a once-in-alifetime opportunity for me and together with the staff we have built something special and what we at MHEDA call “The Best Convention Ever!” I can’t wait to see you there! John L. Gelsimino, All Lift Service Co. Inc., President

Safety First

Are your loading dock Safety System Maintenance costs cutting into profit?

The loading dock is an essential part of any manufacturing company, warehouse, or distribution center. It is what allows the process of raw materials to enter and completed goods to be transported to consumers and end users. Unfortunately, the loading dock can be a hazardous environment where accidents can occur. It is estimated that 25% of all industrial accidents happen at the loading dock according to ISHN. To mitigate the risk of accidents, organizations often invest in loading dock safety systems to mitigate the risk of accidents or injury at the loading dock. A variety of systems can be found on the market to prevent these incidents such as hook restraints, wheel chocks, blocking arms, and interlocking gladhand systems. Organizations often invest in these systems to avoid accidental injuries at the dock and spend anywhere from thousands to millions for a corporate or site wide roll out of one of these systems. Companies expect these systems to be a one-time investment that will prevent them from incurring the costs associated with a workplace injury or potential death. What companies don’t expect is the high recurring maintenance costs associated with some types of loading dock safety systems. Loading dock safety systems typically fall into the categories below and can vary in maintenance costs: Automatic Wheel Restraints: Automatic wheel restraints such as powered chocks perform in a similar way to mechanical chocks; however, they 14

March 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

are automatic and thus require no personnel in the yard to fit it. They are also integrated with other dock equipment which ensures that a safe process is enforced. Some systems are built in at sub ground level and therefore require significant installation effort, these can also be significantly affected by the elements. Systems that are installed above ground become an obstacle, especially in winter. Like mechanical chocks, relatively high maintenance costs can be associated with these systems due to the number of moving parts, concrete work associated with damaged equipment, and the time associated with clearing snow/ice in harsh weather conditions. Hook Restraints: Hook restraints can be manual or automatic systems that prevent drive aways at the loading dock. The hook restraint is installed at the dock door and when a truck is present, the hook is engaged and clamps onto the ICC bar of the vehicle to prevent the trailer to pull away from the dock prematurely. Hook restraint systems can require significant maintenance due to the number of moving parts, hydraulics, damage to equipment, and high forces involved in restraining the vehicle at the loading dock. Mechanical Chocks/Wheel Restraint: Mechanical chocks build upon the principle of manual chocks however they typically have additional permanent structure that they are fitted to which provides increased restraining force. If the permanent structure is higher than ground level, these can become an obstacle, especially in winter when ploughing the site. Ground level plates can also be affected by winter conditions as they become covered in snow/ice, making it difficult to fit the chock. There can be high maintenance costs associated with these types of restraint systems due to the number of moving parts, damage to permanent structures, and the time associated with clearing snow/ice in harsh weather conditions.

Manual Chocks: Manual chocks are common, simple wedges of material that are placed closely against a vehicle's wheel to prevent accidental drive aways. Chocks can be unreliable as they can easily be lost, stolen or broken. Maintenance cost for manual chocks include complete product replacements and can vary due to the number of sets of chocks the facility owns. Interlocking Gladhands: Gladhand devices are used to lock out the air brake of the trailer to prevent movement at the loading dock. When gladhand devices are interlocked with the dock door with fixed mounted trapped key interlock devices, they can create a sequential safety process that must be followed to load and unload the trailer that results in the prevention of drive aways at the loading dock. Maintenance costs associated with these systems are minimal as the only maintenance required is the greasing of the gladhand coupling device once per year depending on the temperature of your facility’s location. In the below chart, common loading dock safety systems are ranked from the highest to lowest associated maintenance costs for a facility with 25 loading bays over the time period of one year:

16

March 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

As you can see, some safety solutions require more maintenance than others, resulting in high costs that cut into the facility’s profit. If you and your facility find yourself in the position of continually having to maintain components, replace damaged equipment, order replacements, and spend entirely too much time and money on your loading docks safety system, it is time to reconsider your existing system. Safety at the loading shouldn’t cause additional headaches, it should be simple, safe, and low maintenance. Lucky for you, there are other options than your existing solution that won’t cut into your facilities profit. Cybersecurity and its importance for the future Cyberattacks are ongoing, and they show no signs of slowing down any time soon. Meanwhile, today's material handling businesses must prioritize cybersecurity across their supply chains. Otherwise, they risk expensive and time-intensive data breaches. A supply chain cyberattack can cripple a material handling business. But with a clear understanding of supply chain cyberattacks, material handling companies can limit their impact now and in the future. How does a data breach impact the supply chain? Cybercriminals can use third-party software updates, malware, and other attack vectors to penetrate a business' supply chain. If they are successful, cybercriminals can compromise all aspects of a company's supply chain operations. They can disrupt a supply chain, to the point where a company loses control of its supply chain operations. Or, they can threaten to release sensitive supply chain data. Cybercriminals can even demand a ransom to restore access to a company's supply chain operations. Ultimately, a cyberattack can impact supply chain productivity and efficiency. The attack can make it tough to maintain an agile supply chain, too. And the longer a supply chain cyberattack goes unaddressed, the more likely the attack will cause long-lasting damage to a company's supply chain operations. Why cybersecurity across the supply chain is key Research indicates hackers attack computers with internet access every 39 seconds. There is no telling when a supply chain cyberattack will occur. If a company ignores proper cybersecurity protocols, it risks exposing its supply chain data and systems to cybercriminals. Moreover, businesses need to account for supply chain cyber threats that are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Many hackers are launching ransomware, malware, and other advanced supply 18

chain attacks. Plus, they continue to seek out ways to upgrade their attacks. In doing so, cybercriminals can bypass traditional security software to ensure their supply chain attacks are successful. Material handling businesses face cyber risks, and they must put cybersecurity front and center to minimize supply chain risk. With careful planning and attention to detail, material handling companies can take appropriate measures to guard against current and emerging supply chain cyber threats. As a result, these businesses will be well-equipped to stop supply chain cyberattacks before they escalate. How to protect against supply chain cyberattacks Cybercriminals are relentless, and they will stop at nothing to attack material handling businesses and their supply chains. Fortunately, a proactive business can identify potential security risks. If the business remains proactive, it can optimize its security posture. Here are three tips to help material handling companies guard against supply chain cyberattacks. 1. Develop a cybersecurity strategy Conduct a cyber risk assessment. This allows a business to analyze possible dangers and identify security gaps. From here, the business can craft a security strategy. A cybersecurity strategy should encompass supply chain threats. It helps to assess a wide range of cyber threats and understand how they can impact a business. Next, a company can determine what measures are necessary to combat relevant threats. It can then implement a strategy and track its results. This ensures a company can monitor its security strategy and continue to explore ways to get the best results from it. Evaluate a cybersecurity strategy regularly. That way, if a business encounters supply chain disruptions or other security issues, it can examine these incidents in conjunction with its cybersecurity strategy. And if necessary, the company can update

its cybersecurity strategy and ensure it aligns with its overall business plan. 2. Provide cybersecurity awareness training Teach employees about cyberattacks and the dangers associated with them. To do so, develop and implement a cybersecurity awareness training program that accounts for supply chain cyberattacks and other threats. A training program can be tailored to a workforce. The program can include hands-on exercises and simulations, so workers can see what happens during a cyberattack. It can contain assessments to test workers' knowledge of various cybersecurity terms and definitions as well. Collect feedback from workers regarding a cybersecurity awareness training program. This can help a business determine if the program is hitting the mark with its employees. Over time, the business can use employee feedback to fine-tune its cybersecurity awareness training program.

3. Invest in cybersecurity technologies and cyber liability insurance Integrate cybersecurity technologies into everyday business operations. The best cybersecurity technologies vary based on the business and what it needs to protect. In addition, a company must search diligently for the right cybersecurity technologies. They also must ensure this technology will protect against cyberattacks long into the future. Verify that cybersecurity technologies address myriad security issues. For instance, companies can leverage IT security asset monitoring and inventory solutions to automate the detection of cyber threats. Comparatively, they can utilize security solutions that provide end-to-end protection across the supply chain. Along with cybersecurity technologies, companies should invest in cyber liability insurance. Thanks to a cyber insurance policy, a company is financially protected if a data breach occurs. The policy can even help a business limit the risk of legal issues, lost customer loyalty, and similar problems following a breach. The bottom line Supply chain cyberattacks are problematic for material handling businesses around the world. Material handling companies that prioritize cybersecurity won't necessarily stop these attacks. However, they can minimize the impact of supply chain cyberattacks. Furthermore, material handling companies should remain persistent and continuously explore ways to enhance their security posture. This ensures material handling companies can maintain secure operations. Noah Rue is always wondering where his next trip will take him. Business Management

How holiday returns can actually help your supply chain and business Even with a continuing global pandemic, 2021 turned out to be an excellent year for many retailers. The National Retail Foundation reports that holiday sales hit a record $886.7 billion in 2021, a 14.1% jump from the prior year. Despite rising inflation, labor shortages, supply chain issues, and the new omicron variant, consumers continued to spend money at record rates and businesses delivered. But many consumers are also returning items post-holiday, which poses challenges for many businesses. When approached correctly, here is how holiday returns can actually benefit your supply chain and business. Holiday returns are skyrocketing It’s a simple fact that people return online purchases at higher rates than in-store purchases. Consumers are buying goods online at higher rates than at any time in history. They’re doing so because it is more convenient, cheaper, and safer during a global health crisis. But they’re also sending more stuff back. It’s all too easy to hit that “Buy” button on a phone or tablet with the knowledge that you can just hit the “Return” button if you’re unhappy for any reason. For consumers, this is much easier than having to go back to a store, stand in line, and explain to a clerk why you no longer want the item. Some news outlets have even called the high rate of online returns a “trillion dollar problem.” And the pandemic hasn’t helped matters. McKinsey found that 40% of consumers started shopping for gifts early this year due to concerns about delayed shipping and shortages. While this took some of the burdens off of the supply chain, it also increased the chances of returns. Because people were “hoarding” gifts, many were already planning to make returns. Before the holidays even arrived, forecasts estimated that 42% of shoppers were planning on returning at least some of the gifts they purchased. 22

March 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

And what about gifts received? On average, nearly two-thirds of consumers will return at least one holiday gift they receive for an exchange or refund. Unfortunately, CNN reports that supply chain issues are driving up the cost of those returns for businesses by more than half. Fortunately, there are ways you can add value to your business through efficient holiday returns handling. How holiday returns can help your supply chain and business Short of not allowing returns, which would be detrimental to your business, you’ll have to accept that some level of returns is going to happen. It’s simply the price of doing business. But, how can you minimize some of those costs and even benefit your supply chain and overall results? For most businesses, the answer lies in creating the most efficient operation possible, which can involve a combination of several initiatives. Have clear product listings Sure, some consumers are going to return products due to things like damage or shipping delays. But you may be able to reduce returns for reasons like poor fit or incompatibility if you have clear product descriptions accompanied by multiple high-quality images and even some videos. Be transparent about your return policy To avoid alienating customers or harming your business due to poor reviews and plummeting retention rates, let customers know about your return policy upfront. Making all sales final isn’t the best policy because customers will have legitimate reasons for returns. Further, many customers will avoid purchasing from an online retailer that doesn’t take returns. A better strategy is to state your return policy on the checkout page so that the customer has the information before submitting payment. Offer consumers multiple return options One of the best ways to handle holiday returns that can also benefit your supply chain is to offer

consumers multiple return options. For example, some businesses also have retail stores that can handle returns, lessening the burden on shipping and warehouse providers. PayPal-owned Happy Returns allows customers of certain online stores to return items to retail centers like Staples, simplifying the returns process and reducing the number of individual packages being sent. Leverage technology for processing returns If you do nothing else with your online business, it’s a good idea to explore the benefits of leveraging technology throughout the reverse logistics process. The use of solutions like warehouse automation, a warehouse management system (WMS), RFID tags, and mobile powered carts can help workers process orders and returns more efficiently, reduce errors, and lower costs throughout the organization. Get goods and services from more than one supplier The reverse logistics process involves a lot of moving parts. There is equipment, storage,

transportation, and the replacement of damaged or incorrect products. When your business optimizes its supply chain by using more than one supplier, it can provide better service to customers, experience fewer bottlenecks, and likely accomplish its goals at the best price. Unlock value in your returns U.S. shoppers generate roughly 15 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year, and discarded returns are an inevitable part of this equation. Not only can your business be more sustainable, but it can also unlock value in returned products by reconditioning them, reselling them at a discount, or recycling them. Create transparency throughout the supply chain When you optimize your supply chain moving in both directions, it creates a level of transparency that can prevent future issues and provide a better customer experience. The data provided gives you advanced insights to make better business decisions as well as gives your customers the real-time information they want about what’s happening with their orders or returns. It’s no surprise that eCommerce activity has exploded over the past several years. Returns and reverse logistics can be expensive processes, and taking shortcuts can harm your business. This means the technology solutions and efficiencies you build into your reverse logistics program are more important than ever. Felling Trailers’ “Green” Air Bi-fold Ramp System Felling Trailers’ continues to go "green" with their patent-pending Air Operated Bi-fold Ramps system. The Air Bi-Fold Ramps system first debuted at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020. The Air Bi-Fold ramp system is part of Felling's Controlled Flow Air Ramp series, which the company launched over a decade ago, all air-powered, no batteries, no hydraulics. The new Air Bi-Fold system is a revolutionary system that is perfect for the paving and low clearance markets. A key feature of Felling's design is in the operation of the flip ramp. The flip ramp locks out fully when extending, preventing scraping or marring of the ground, which is undesirable, especially if it's a new surface of any kind. www.felling.com www.MHNetwork.com

Let pedestrians and operators know if someone is just around the corner with our New LOOK-OUT ™

• Avoid Forklift Accidents • Alert Workers & Pedestrians • Warehouse, Yard and Office Applications • Reduce Liabilities • Increase Up Time

Alert Employees of Dangerous Collisions BEFORE They Occur! LOOK-OUT™

Currently, we have 42 standard package offerings, ranging from one-way to fourway intersections. These units can be mounted to racks, walls, or ceiling hung for the large units. Additionally, our new DUAL USE series consists of units that can be used INDOORS and OUTDOORS. Our units are Essential for Traffic Control.

Our LOOK OUT™ product line offers a versatile line of safety sensors that will alert workers and pedestrians if a forklift or other moving object is approaching just around the corner. Our sensors are great for any traffic area and are quickly becoming a standard for warehouse traffic control. Avoid accidents and potential liabilities to your facility. We have LOOK OUT™ products for just about every safety application for your warehouse, yard, or office needs. Additionally, if you need a custom solution, we will work with you to assure that your safety needs are met to complete satisfaction.

Protect your employees, visitors, and guests from dangerous collisions with forklifts or heavy equipment while walking through your facility. Safety and caution should be an automatic response to your implemented systems. We offer both interior and exterior sensors on our systems that can be mounted anywhere. They help control traffic concerns and communicate that someone is approaching from a spot that may not be otherwise visible.

When the sensors detect motion in blind spots around a corner or a door way, it begins to flash a warning to the pedestrian or operator who is approaching that intersection. Additionally, sensors will signal the lights on either side of the unit to flash as to indicate someone is approaching the same intersection. Thus, everyone approaching that intersection is informed of movement and will know to proceed with caution. The sensors may be adjusted to specific angles and lengths that will meet the needs of your facility. Signals are sent via bright flashing red LED lights on each visible side of the units.

AVOID DEADLY AND COSTLY FORKLIFT COLLISIONS As workers juggle more projects and deadlines with shorter time constraints, safety can become jeopardized. As this happens, so do accidents. 40% of all forklift fatalities are caused by an individual being struck or run over by a forklift. Many of these accidents and fatalities can be avoided by warning pedestrians and forklift operators of approaching danger. Our LOOK OUT™ sensor alert warning system allows for quick and easy recognition of possible hazardous situations. Why take chances of liabilities when you can avoid accidents and protect your most valuable assets: your employees!

Blind spots, corners, and dangerous intersections can cause series accidents. Wouldn’t it be great if someone was always there to alert you of oncoming traffic? Despite Safety Supervisors efforts, they cannot always be there to prevent collisions. Thankfully, our units are there to scan traffic areas and alert 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • The Look Out units cover 2, 3, and 4-way intersections. • The Hall Door and Overhead Door units cover hallways and overhead doors. • The Basics detect on one side and alert on the other. • The Dual Use series of units can be used for interior/exterior applications. Examples of these units are shown below. LOOK OUT 4
