Safety First

Top 10 warehouse safety hazards and how to avoid them Heavy Equipment Accidents – When employees work with warehouse heavy equipment such as a forklift every day, they tend to get very comfortable using the equipment. This can be very dangerous if the operator begins to underestimate the danger of the machine. Ensure that all employees understand the potential hazards a forklift or other warehouse machines present and never get too comfortable. Remain cautious and careful when operating any machine. Always follow the specific instructions provided for the equipment and avoid situations where a forklift accident is likely. Slips and Trips Slipping is a very common warehouse hazard that can be easily avoided. To prevent the majority of slips and trips in your warehouse, eliminate the following factors: • Loose material such as sawdust • Liquids • Unnecessary steps or ridges • Boxes from the floor • Dark areas Implementing anti-slip floor tape is essential for ensuring the safety of your warehouse. Falls Falling accounts for a large majority of workplace accidents. You and your employees are always at risk of falling, not just when working above ground level. Slipping and falling is a common cause of injury among warehouse employees. When working around loading docks, remember your training and stay aware of your surroundings. Also, whenever there is a large drop between floors, proper guard railing is essential. The comprehensive guide to warehouse guardrails explains why you need to guard rails and how to implement them. Fires A fire can jeopardize your entire warehouse, but this warehouse hazard is also among the most preventable accidents. Building permits, clearly marked exits, exit strategies, and fire extinguisher laws are all in place to prevent fires. Still, fires are very common and require 10

constant prevention awareness. Things to avoid are: • Worn and exposed wires such as old extension cords • Leaking flammable fluids and gasses • Running electrical cords under carpet Crushed According to the OSHA weekly fatality/catastrophe report, two workers are crushed to death every month on the job. Provide sufficient training for any machine with augers or press machines. Avoid moving machines and trucks in the loading dock. Also, be weary of heavy materials that could fall on your employees. Exposure to Harmful Substances – Harsh chemicals such as asbestos are a serious workplace hazard. Any employee that feels that their working conditions are not adequate can flag your warehouse for inspection. Always ensure that your employees are being taken care of. Ergonomics – Every warehouse employee must take care of their bodies. Constant mistreatment will lead to pain and injury. There are several ergonomic solutions to common warehouse problems such as back and foot pain. Also, always make sure your employees understand the importance of proper lifting techniques. Moving Parts Always pay attention to warning labels. Machines with moving parts are a common workplace hazard. When used improperly, a machine can cause severe permanent injury and death. Falling Objects – A common material handling practice is stacking objects on high platforms and shelves. Always keep heavy loads stacked neatly to avoid a shifting load or cylindrical objects from rolling off of shelves. Lack of Safety Education Without proper education, a warehouse will not perform at its full potential. Many warehouses choose to skip thorough training to save money. This practice is unwise and will result in workers compensation lawsuits or OSHA fines. A safe warehouse is an efficient warehouse. Avoiding proper training is the number one cause of workplace injury. Implementing a system like 5S is the best way to instill a safe environment for your employees.

Blocks the Spread of Fire Activates the Sprinkler System

Today’s warehouse fire protection systems include more than just pipes and sprinklers. When the products being stored include highly flammable items such as plastics, aerosols, liquors or oils, fire barriers may be required inside the racking structure. Solid steel rack decking and flat sheet accessories from DACS make effective fire or heat barriers in warehouse environments. They can be used on storage racks horizontally or vertically to block the spread of fire, or to capture heat for in-rack sprinkler activation. SEE US AT

Eight common eCommerce Fulfillment mistakes and how to fix them Imagine thousands of products heading out the door to countless customers, all involving different delivery times, costs, and shipping carriers. There’s nothing simple about it, and how you handle order fulfillment can make or break your business. Here are eight of the most common eCommerce order fulfillment mistakes and how your business can address them. 1. Incorrect or Damaged Orders One of the first mistakes eCommerce businesses make relates to incorrect order information. If you have an inaccurate product description on your website, you’re likely going to get a lot of unhappy customers, negative reviews, and product returns. An inefficient system can also lead to errors in order fulfillment, meaning the wrong items or damaged products are sent to customers, which is another costly mistake for your business. You can address these problems best by using a warehouse management system (WMS) that loads accurate product descriptions into your eCommerce system and helps your workers accurately fulfill orders. Inventory safety and quality control measures can reduce instances of damaged items being sent to customers. 2. Poor Inventory Management When a customer orders a product, you need to be able to locate it quickly and easily so that it can be shipped without delay. If your warehouse isn’t well-organized, you may have trouble finding items or face unexpected stockouts, resulting in shipping delays. To avoid these problems, have a high-quality WMS system in place and consider integrating other technology solutions, such as mobile powered industrial carts for warehouse management. 3. Wrong Warehousing Space Having enough warehousing space is critical for the success of your eCommerce business. But how you use the space you have is just as important. Whether you outsource order fulfillment or not, proper warehouse layout and management should be a priority. For example, high-volume products should be located closer to packaging and loading docks and you can use vertical space to your advantage as well.

14

4. Failure to Deliver On-Time Today’s consumers have become accustomed to nextday shipping. And many will look elsewhere if they don’t get the fast service they expect. While your business doesn’t necessarily have to ship everything same day or next day, it should deliver on its promises. You can meet your customers’ expectations by tracking your inventory closely and replenishing it automatically when necessary. Have the right technology, systems, and shipping partners on hand to handle high-volume seasons. 5. Manual Tracking In today’s digital age, there’s no reason to use manual tracking of inventory items or customer purchases. The right WMS paired with other technology solutions like RFID tags and mobile carts can automate this process entirely. You’ll know when inventory arrives at your warehouse, how much you have, when orders have been packed and shipped, and can give customers the tracking data - all through an automated system. 6. Insufficient Communication When you sell items online and run a complex logistics machine, mistakes will happen. But what isn’t acceptable is not communicating with customers about them when they do. It’s important to remember that customers are counting on your promises and might have support questions that you can easily resolve. You can keep the lines of communication open with customers by using a variety of tools. A Knowledge Base on your website can answer some common questions. You can also use a live chat feature to deliver more personalized service. 7. Paying Too Much for Shipping Online retailers struggle with what to charge customers for shipping and how to get the best rates from shipping partners. If you outsource eCommerce fulfillment, you’re probably going to get better shipping rates from partners because you are pooling resources with other clients for the highest volume discounts. When it comes to what you should charge customers, you’ll likely find out through trial and error. Keep in mind that many customers search for free shipping. So, if

Warehouse Solutions continued you can offer this, even with a threshold (“Free Shipping for Orders Over $99”), you’ll likely get better results. 8. Lack of eCommerce Reverse Logistics Even the best-run eCommerce store is going to experience customer returns. People purchase the wrong size, color, or model #, or receive damaged items and need to send them back. How you handle reverse logistics is a vital part of the customer experience. Unfortunately, too many businesses treat this part of the business as an afterthought and don’t handle reverse logistics well. Your business can do better by setting up a staging area to receive and inspect returned items. Quickly process refunds for customers and return what you can back to inventory for re-sale. At first glance, order fulfillment might seem like an uncomplicated task. But anyone involved in the eCommerce business knows that it can be challenging. Because it is such a vital part of your business and the

customer experience, it makes sense to invest time and resources in the processes and technology that will give you the best possible results. Material Handling Vehicles Rely on Quality Engineering Author: Doug Chovan

The famous philosopher Plato is widely credited for the well-known proverb, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” You could say that same reasoning helped to shape Amigo Mobility’s decision more than five years ago to begin manufacturing mid-size motorized material handling vehicles for the industrial market. Just as Amigo Mobility Chairman and Founder Al Thieme identified a need for helping the disabled with independent mobility in the late 1960s, so too did we identify a need for a similar solution to fill various material handling needs in manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and distribution centers (DCs). The key to developing the company’s industrial material handling vehicle solution was mirroring Amigo Mobility’s approach to quality engineering that has made our personal mobility products so durable and virtually maintenance-free. Market needs drive ongoing product innovation After selling our Amigo vehicles for a few decades to people with disabilities, we next identified a need to provide mobility-impaired individuals with more accessibility to shopping in grocery stores and other retail establishments. Amigo motorized shopping carts went on to become the market leader in the grocery store and retail industries. Combined with our experience involving functionality and reliability in the healthcare market, as well as a strong reputation for durability and long battery life in the retail market, we knew that we had the right combination for our new line of mid-size motorized material handling vehicles. And likewise, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and DCs require Amigo Mobility mid-size material handling vehicles to be dependable. We always want our products to be available on-demand and to never delay work. Because they also must be functional and easy to service, we’ve leaned heavily on our decades of experience in a variety of markets solving mobility challenges which has helped us design and build the right size material handling vehicle for the industrial environment. 4 n Network – MODEX 2022 Insert

Engineering know-how built on five decades of experience During the past more than 50 years, Amigo Mobility has become an expert in all things related to electric motors fueled by rechargeable batteries, the batteries and charging systems themselves, as well as knowing how to select just the right kind of wheels for the right product applications. When we identify a problem, we work hard to find a better way to solve it. For example, in our manufacturing facility and warehouse, we often saw employee teams using a forklift to move small items, or a pushcart to manually move heavy and awkward loads. Using decades of experience and knowhow with drive systems in battery powered carts, along with some minor adjustments to the base frame and design, we created what we now refer to as a mid-size motorized material handling vehicle. Mid-size is the key phrase here because these products work hand in hand and fill the gap between large and cumbersome powered material handling equipment (such as forklifts) and equipment that’s moved around manually (using pallet jacks or pushcarts). Along the way, we also determined that a smaller, easy-to-maneuver motorized material handling vehicle was something that many manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and DCs needed, but there weren’t a lot of mid-size solutions out in the marketplace. Sound engineering and serviceability go hand-inhand At Amigo Mobility, customer service after the sale is just as important as R&D and engineering are at the beginning of product design. When we start to design a product solution — well before the first model is even completed, let alone sold — we seriously consider the product’s serviceability and lifetime cost. It’s imperative to us that the product must be both dependable for the end-user and easy to service. February 2022

Amigo Mobility’s deep roots in the healthcare industry — providing personal mobility carts to people with walking disabilities — really proved to us how critical those requirements are. We knew that if someone’s personal transportation wasn’t working properly, they couldn’t get around their house, to their job, take care of their family, and more. We’ve carried that mindset throughout all of our product lines, whether we’re providing products to mobility-impaired individuals to use in their home, motorized shopping carts for use in grocery stores, or now material handling vehicles for a manufacturing facility or warehouse. Following are just a few examples of the rigid engineering considerations that go into our material handling vehicles: · Using the same high-quality, durable steel tubing in our vehicle frames that we rely on for our other various product lines. · Aesthetic decisions used during construction based on a variety of cosmetic considerations and

supplier-provided component capabilities. · Stringent and extensive testing conducted on our products, including preliminary static FEA (finite element analysis) studies, to determine and evaluate towing and weight-handling capacities as well as a variety of associated safety factors. · Foam-filled tires that provide a soft ride while eliminating the need to maintain air pressure, don’t damage floors and are highly durable even when driving over metal shards. More than meets the eye As you can see, there’s quite a lot of proven history, thought, innovative design, testing, and more that goes into Amigo Mobility’s entire line of mid-size motorized material handling. The same innovation and desire to find a better way in 1968 continues to push Amigo into the future decades of the company. Business Management

Taking warehouse operations to the next level

When it comes to optimizing your warehouse operations, best practices in the industry can help boost your business’ growth. Recognizing the best tech and operational practices for your industry can also drive overall productivity and profitability. Conduct an efficiency audit According to the U.S. Postal Service, many warehouse operations run on autopilot, so a regular audit of all of your practices can help identify areas where processes are slow, ineffective, or creating bottlenecks that reduce productivity and end up raising costs. Consider bringing on a consultant to assess your operations, or involve employees in the process. Your front-line workers, in particular, can identify the processes that do and don't work and help you find creative ways to improve your approaches. Utilize technology There are a number of new software programs that can help boost your overall efficiency and even make your employees more productive. Look into inventory organization and tracking programs, project management that keeps everyone on the same page, and cybersecurity measures that will protect not only your company, but your vendors, your clients, and your employees. Once you have new software identified and installed, make sure all warehouse staffers are trained appropriately to ensure maximum efficiency. Click here for more recommendations. Restructure organizational practices According to CamCode, sometimes, a simple matter of physical re-organization can help improve efficiency. For example, you might be better served to store items vertically than horizontally, warehousing like products together, or otherwise restructuring your physical storage practices in a way that makes more sense for the traffic flow of your business. A clean and organized warehouse is also a safer warehouse. Again, this is where on-the-

ground warehouse staffers can provide valuable insights that can help you improve your company’s organizational practices. Improve productivity Having the right software and warehousing strategies in place can all help your workers be more efficient. You can also encourage and reward high levels of performance by instituting an incentive pay program. In this sense, the faster and more efficiently items get packed, shipped, processed, or stored, the more you save, and the more your employees can earn. Consistently track results and performance metrics so you can tell whether or not your newly implemented policies and practices are indeed being effective. Save money through energy efficiency Ensuring that all of your equipment is continually maintained, updated, and serviced can help you save money, as can replacing older equipment with new energy-efficient models. This approach will also make your business more sustainable, which is something that's not only good for the environment but can be used as a marketing tool. Many companies are opting to do business with other “green” companies, so use improvements to your advantage by describing your sustainability practices in your marketing messages. Stay current on best practices Many businesses get into a groove of always doing the same thing the same way. Stay abreast of best practices in warehouse management by getting involved in trade industries and associations, attending conferences, and learning about how other companies improve efficiencies. It’s a great way to learn new techniques, and it can be a good place for networking and even hiring new staffers. It can also lead to opportunities for collaboration and expanding your company’s reach. Streamlining and improving warehouse operations can all lead to improved morale, reduced errors and accidents, and increased productivity and cost savings for your business. A warehouse that runs like a well-oiled machine can also lead to an increase in repeat business, which improves your bottom line. Industry News The ARA Foundation to award $128,500 in scholarships

TVH Americas supports Operation Homefront

Each year, the American Rental Association (ARA) Foundation awards numerous scholarships in an effort to attract talent to the equipment and event rental industry. For the 2022-2023 academic year, $128,500 will be available to students seeking higher education through trade schools, universities, and community colleges. In total, 66 individual scholarships are available with amounts ranging from $750 to $5,000. Students may apply for multiple awards if eligibility requirements are met. www.ararental.org/ARA-Foundation/Scholarships

TVH Americas has recently presented Operation Homefront with a donation check from a fundraising event held earlier this year. Employees throughout TVH’s US locations raised money with a Fourth of July themed t-shirt fundraiser for Operation Homefront, an organization that supports active and retired military families in many different ways. With a company match, TVH was able to donate $7,202 to the organization. Some of TVH’s own veterans, including Kory Tinsley, Tom Cole, Jim Dunnivan, Robert Wooton, and Emil Trybom presented AJ Kahn, a representative from Operation Homefront, with the check. www.tvh.com

Prepare for falling temperatures with Phillips & Temro Industries Zerostart® Engine Block Heaters TVH Americas knows that colder weather brings new challenges when it comes to operating equipment efficiently and consistently. One challenge is that frigid temperatures can make turning the equipment on a bit more difficult and cause them to start up slower. Cold starts can put additional strain on the battery and increase fuel consumption because the vehicle must idle for longer periods of time before being operated. Fuel efficiency can plummet for up to 20 minutes following a cold start because the engine requires a higher fuel to air ratio until it reaches optimal operating temperature. Suppliers, like TVH, have Phillips & Temro Zerostart® engine block heaters in stock and ready to ship. www.tvh.com

New testing shows Orbis Odyssey® Plastic Pallet can withstand 400 cycles ORBIS® Corporation, has validated that its 40x48-inch Odyssey® plastic pallet has approximately 36 times the lifespan of a 40x48-inch whitewood stringer pallet, according to a recent study. Researchers from the Virginia Tech Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design used the center’s FasTrack life-cycle analysis to compare relative durability. The FasTrack life-cycle analysis simulated rough handling of palletized unit loads, using a multi-step handling sequence. In testing, the Odyssey plastic pallet completed the sequence 400 cycles without failure, while the wood pallet’s average failure was after 11 cycles. www.orbiscorporation.com

Let pedestrians and operators know if someone is just around the corner with our New LOOK-OUT ™

• Avoid Forklift Accidents • Alert Workers & Pedestrians • Warehouse, Yard and Office Applications • Reduce Liabilities • Increase Up Time

Alert Employees of Dangerous Collisions BEFORE They Occur! LOOK-OUT™

Currently, we have 42 standard package offerings, ranging from one-way to fourway intersections. These units can be mounted to racks, walls, or ceiling hung for the large units. Additionally, our new DUAL USE series consists of units that can be used INDOORS and OUTDOORS. Our units are Essential for Traffic Control.

Our LOOK OUT™ product line offers a versatile line of safety sensors that will alert workers and pedestrians if a forklift or other moving object is approaching just around the corner. Our sensors are great for any traffic area and are quickly becoming a standard for warehouse traffic control. Avoid accidents and potential liabilities to your facility. We have LOOK OUT™ products for just about every safety application for your warehouse, yard, or office needs. Additionally, if you need a custom solution, we will work with you to assure that your safety needs are met to complete satisfaction.

Protect your employees, visitors, and guests from dangerous collisions with forklifts or heavy equipment while walking through your facility. Safety and caution should be an automatic response to your implemented systems. We offer both interior and exterior sensors on our systems that can be mounted anywhere. They help control traffic concerns and communicate that someone is approaching from a spot that may not be otherwise visible.

When the sensors detect motion in blind spots around a corner or a door way, it begins to flash a warning to the pedestrian or operator who is approaching that intersection. Additionally, sensors will signal the lights on either side of the unit to flash as to indicate someone is approaching the same intersection. Thus, everyone approaching that intersection is informed of movement and will know to proceed with caution. The sensors may be adjusted to specific angles and lengths that will meet the needs of your facility. Signals are sent via bright flashing red LED lights on each visible side of the units.

LOOK OUT 1 R

AVOID DEADLY AND COSTLY FORKLIFT COLLISIONS As workers juggle more projects and deadlines with shorter time constraints, safety can become jeopardized. As this happens, so do accidents. 40% of all forklift fatalities are caused by an individual being struck or run over by a forklift. Many of these accidents and fatalities can be avoided by warning pedestrians and forklift operators of approaching danger. Our LOOK OUT™ sensor alert warning system allows for quick and easy recognition of possible hazardous situations. Why take chances of liabilities when you can avoid accidents and protect your most valuable assets: your employees!

Sensor detects up to 35 feet away,24 hours a day

Shown: Hall Door Monitor Basic

Blind spots, corners, and dangerous intersections can cause series accidents. Wouldn’t it be great if someone was always there to alert you of oncoming traffic? Despite Safety Supervisors efforts, they cannot always be there to prevent collisions. Thankfully, our units are there to scan traffic areas and alert 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • The Look Out units cover 2, 3, and 4-way intersections. • The Hall Door and Overhead Door units cover hallways and overhead doors. • The Basics detect on one side and alert on the other. • The Dual Use series of units can be used for interior/exterior applications.
