Forklift shortage has aftermarket parts and service suppliers scrambling to keep up

There have been winners and losers in the current unpredictable market of shipping delays and product shortages. Among the sure winners are those providing aftermarket service and supplies for forklifts. The lift truck is the workhorse of any material handling facility and those who supply parts and services for these trucks are scrambling to keep up with business. They have been managing a delicate balancing act between supplying critical aftermarket supplies to distribution centers while dealing with their own supply chain challenges. According to Modern Materials Handling, the North American lift truck market saw sales of 242,398 trucks in 2019. While that was down 6.8%, it still ranks as the third-best year in the last half-century. But now forklifts themselves are in short supply as manufacturers deal with a shortage in parts and labor and changes in regulations. In May, Toyota Industries Corporation announced that it was suspending some of its models of enginepowered lift trucks due to delays in obtaining U.S. engine emissions certification. Just recently, Toyota announced another voluntary suspension in production and sales for the 6-8 ton forklift model. Shortages in lift trucks themselves mean that material handling operators have been doing what they can to help clients maintain their current fleet with aftermarket services. At Helmar Parts in Chestnut Ridge, N.Y., forklift parts are a key part of the inventory. Company President Paul Paciello said that 2021 has been one of its busiest years on record. Specifically, chassis and engine part sales have risen dramatically, he said. “Mid-year this year we had the highest back-order rate in Helmar’s 6

nearly 40-year history. This was caused by a lack of raw material, manpower, and of course, the long delays in getting containers and transport,” Paciello said. It is the used equipment that is the most valuable these days. “Equipment that was being sold off as parts or scrap are being repaired and reintroduced back into the marketplace,” he said. The story is the same at Panacea Aftermarket Co., one of the leading forklift parts and accessories suppliers in Canada. President Don Martindale said they have seen significant growth across all of their product lines as customers source alternatives to their current supplier, who may have run out of inventory. “Interestingly, we have noticed that customers are now stocking more, due to the potential of product shortages,” Martindale said. The trend among Panacea’s customers has been to replace major components, as opposed to repairing them. “We believe because their intent is to keep their equipment longer as well as the shortage of qualified manpower and higher labor costs,” Martindale said. All Lift Service Co. President John L. Gelsimino said that this year has been filled with “extraordinary customer demand,” though that has caused challenges in keeping up with the labor and products needed to fulfill that demand. The Willoughby, Ohio-based company is a supplier of new and used forklifts, forklift rentals and parts and service. “We are fortunate to have a very diversified business, with many of our segments benefitting from a rebuilding environment,” Gelsimino said. “I expect business to remain strong until mid-year 2022.” He said that all of their inventory is selling. “The general basis of competition has changed to availability, quality of people, ease of doing business and lastly, price,” Gelsimino said. Because the market for used lift trucks has dried up, pushing the costs to “unseen levels,” Gelsimino said his customers are repairing their old units at the end-user and dealer levels. “Remanufactured components are in high demand as everyone is repairing equipment that they normally would not have even repaired,” he said. Sourcing the equipment for aftermarket lift trucks has not been easy, however, as these companies are running into their own supply chain issues. Gelsimino said that items such as forks, propane tanks, pallet jacks, and much more are selling as fast as they are coming in. “The

He added that as inflation ramps up, it will only drive additional demand and price increases making this problem even worse. Martindale said that when they first noticed supply chain issues surfaced in the spring, they, like other wholesalers who rely on overseas imports, were caught off guard. “But we did react quickly, adjusted our lead time forecast, and are well currently positioned,” he said. All of the market factors have greatly impacted lead times for lift truck parts. At Helmar Parts, Paciello said that at one point, it took an additional 90 to 120 days to get a product to a client. “We are currently seeing a vast improvement to 60 to 90 days,” he said. Gelsimino said their lead times vary depending on the class of equipment and manufacturer. “Electric truck lead times are much better than IC truck lead times. Lead and lithium battery lead times are also extended,” he said. Martindale said that for Panacea Aftermarket Co., the delivery times have been more of a challenge than actual product supply. “Because of the container shortage it was difficult and frustrating to get space onboard ships, as a result, costs have tripled and transit times have tripled,” he said Lisa Curtis is a freelance writer based in Cedarburg, WI. Safety First

The Safety implications of the current Supply Chain Backlog & Driver Shortage Lately, the logistics industry and supply chains have been receiving more media attention than ever, unfortunately, it’s not for the best reasons. With headlines in the media such as “Supply Chain Crisis Risks Taking Global Economy Down With It”, “No End in Sight for the COVID-Led Global Supply Chain Disruption” and “Truck driver Shortage Worsens Supply Chain Backlog” there’s no wonder consumers are concerned. In this article, we will address why the logistics industry is seeing this history-making backlog, the impact it is having, what is being done to address the issue, and the implications on safety. Why the backlog? For decades, the logistics industry has operated quietly in the background of the global supply chain, ensuring goods are transported from manufacturers to consumers dodging the spotlight, their impact going unnoticed. Why has the logistics industry recently been brought to light and the spotlight intensified through the media’s lens? Growth in Ecommerce Ecommerce is growing at a rapid pace and manufacturers, warehouses, and logistic companies are trying to keep up with consumer demand. An article in Inside Intelligence forecasts US retail eCommerce sales will grow 13.7%, reaching $908.73 billion in 2021. This increase in eCommerce has resulted due to many reasons and does not look to be slowing anytime in the future. COVID – 19 The global COVID-19 pandemic played a large part in many issues that are affecting logistics and the global supply chain. Consumers have been slowly changing their purchasing habits over the last few years due to convenience and time savings. However, the shift in eCommerce grew significantly due to the pandemic. The Inside Intelligence article goes on to say, “prior to the pandemic, we expected sales would grow just 12.8%.” Due to social distancing guidelines and lockdowns many consumers couldn’t physically go to a store for months and in order for them to get what they needed it was necessary to begin shopping online. This increase in eCommerce is expected to continue with the global online retail volume predicted to grow at a rate of 15% 10

until 2023, as stated in a Deloitte research article. In addition to changing consumer behaviors fueled by the pandemic, entire workforces were contracting the virus resulting in whole facilities having to shut down operations, further intensifying the difficulty to meet consumer demands. Restrictions and guidelines differ across the globe on positive Covid -19 test protocol; these positive test results have a massive effect on the company, profits, and even the global supply chain. For example, China partly shut down the world’s third busiest port after a single port worker tested positive for the virus back in August. The Meidong Terminal , where the employee worked, processes 25% of the cargo that passes through the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. Even a partial shutdown of a terminal had a large impact on the global shipping line. While this shutdown may seem severe, it is a prime example of how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the supply chain. Decrease in International Air Traffic With the global travel restrictions put in place during the pandemic, international air traffic became scarcer. Therefore, cargo typically stored in the cargo hold of passenger planes was halted in their travels, having a large impact on the transportation of international goods. This may not seem like it could have impacted the supply chain in a large way but an article by the Global Economic Forum it states that 40% of annual global air cargo is typically transported in the cargo hold of passenger aircraft.” The article goes on to say, “The other 60% of annual global air cargo is usually moved around in dedicated freighter aircraft by freight forwarders and cargo operators. These cargo operations are primarily hub-focused and follow key trade routes, so are less comprehensive than passenger air networks.” Labor shortage The labor shortage is visible throughout the entire global economy and is the result of several factors. A news article by CNBC looks at what factors are contributing to the shortage globally. In the US, they believe that families have built up savings buffers and don’t have the urgency to return to work. Additionally, it is believed that “there is a more permanent loss of workers driven by a large number of older workers taking early retirement. The thought of returning to the office and the daily commute

Safety First continued may seem unpalatable for many people and with surging equity markets having boosted 401k pension plans, early retirement may seem a very attractive option.” The article goes on to say that in the UK the labor shortage has been “exacerbated by Brexit, with many foreign workers that the country relied on going back home during the pandemic.” In Europe, the labor shortage can be seen as well: “While concerns about labor shortages have started later than in the U.S. and are less pressing than in the U.K., they are increasingly mentioned as a concern for businesses.” The shortage of labor is impacting various industries such as agriculture, warehousing, and logistics. Farmers are having to let food go to waste because they do not have the help they need to process it in a timely manner. In an episode of The Guardian podcast, Today in Focus, they discuss a UK pig farmer who was not able to process his hogs at the correct age due to a lack of workforce. Unfortunately, this has been seen at meat processing plants throughout the globe and has contributed to meat shortages. Additionally, with agriculture margins so tight, farmers not only aren’t profiting off of their hard work, but they are losing money. Warehouses are struggling to operate with reduced staff, adding to the supply chain backlog issue. There are simply not enough workforce resources to operate at their normal pace resulting in increased loading/unloading times at loading bays and trailers having to wait to be unloaded/loaded. Not only are delays present at the warehouses but often delays are likely when transporting goods to the warehouse facilities due to the global driver shortage. Without the drivers, goods are not able to be transported to their end-users further intensifying the backlog. “There are several reasons for the shortage” explains The Guardian podcast, “this has been an existing issue with an older workforce, and we’ve seen a lack of younger drivers entering this field.” In France too they are experiencing similar issues. A BFM Business article states, “In France, there is a shortage of transportation professionals amounting to 50,000 people.” Making an existing issue worse, long training times, less than comfortable accommodations, extended periods away from family, and a global pandemic does not help recruit the new drivers needed to alleviate the issue. The BFM Business article continues, “Salaries and working conditions are making these trades are no longer attractive.” The impact and what is being done about it Unfortunately, the backlogs, shipping delays, and 12

supply chain constraints have had and will continue to have massive effects on consumers. Efforts have been made to address some of the effects, but will it be enough? Only time will tell. New Staff Take a drive through town and you’re bound to see several “We’re Hiring” signs posted on billboards and storefront windows in an effort to combat the labor shortage that so many are experiencing. Due to the difficulty of finding skilled workers, companies are often willing to hire workers with little or no experience. Hiring these new staff members may alleviate their labor issues for the time being but could potentially be creating another issue around workplace safety. Low Stock High levels of demand, labor shortages, and a lack of transportation means have resulted in low stock levels of goods throughout the globe. Food, supplies, metals, and lumber shortages have been present the last several months, at times worse than others, and very noticeable to consumers. To resolve this issue government agencies have extended port operating hours around the clock to help elevate the backlog, for example in the US, the Biden administration has recently announced that two major shipping ports on the west coast will operate 24/7 to alleviate some of the bottlenecks. The Los Angeles and Long Beach California ports account for about 40% of the US cargo container imports, according to an article in United Press International. In addition, the decreased HGV driver training time and other incentives are part of the effort to attract new drivers to the industry to transport goods to consumers. Wage increases have also been seen throughout the globe to attract individuals to work to kickstart the supply chain and ensure the goods arriving at the ports reach the consumer's shelves. Price Increases Not only have items been hard to come by on the shelves but when consumers do happen to find what they are looking for, they will have to pay a higher price than what they used to. A large reason for this is the increase in wages to help attract workers. However, when companies do raise wages, they are not able to absorb the costs within the company. Therefore, they need to raise prices for consumers to stay afloat. A variety of other issues have led to increasing prices as well. An article from CNN states, “A growing list of

Safety First continued crises on the supply side has exacerbated the commodities crunch. The Suez Canal blockage delayed goods shipments in March. Drought in South America has weighed on corn and sugar output. A deep freeze in Texas and the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack tightened the market for plastic and fuel, while India's Covid-19 outbreak disrupted ports and supply chains.” "It's really been a perfect storm,” says Warren Patterson, head of commodities strategy at ING. Long Lead Times As you can imagine, all the issues previously discussed are causing long lead times around the globe. “The time it takes to ship an item from Asia to the United States has roughly doubled — 15 days by air, 90 by sea — during the pandemic” states Neel Jones Shah, global head of airfreight for Flexport, a logistics technology company. “The backlog, coupled with labor shortages and pandemic-related shutdowns at every point in the process, has led to months-long waits for electronics, furniture, and other imports. Shippers are scrambling to figure out how to get their goods to market in time for the Christmas selling season.” If children are asking for that special gift for the upcoming holidays, now is the time to purchase. Lead times are increasing, and experts suggest that holiday shopping should happen earlier this year than ever. “There’s no logical way that everyone is going to find what they want in time for Christmas,” said Isaac Larian, chief executive of MGA Entertainment, the toy giant behind Rainbow High, and such popular lines as L.O.L. Surprise and Little Tikes. “Everything is up the air.” Implications on Safety As you can see, the impact of the supply chain backlog and driver shortage is having a large effect on consumers. While governments and companies have made steps to try to address these issues, such as decreasing the time it takes to train HGV drivers and increasing the number of hours they can drive on the road before requiring a break, they could be creating an additional issue while trying to address another. The labor shortage, particularly with truck drivers and warehouses personnel, coupled with the increase in the demand for eCommerce, could have massive implications on safety. With new drivers on the road being trained in a shorter amount of time, the number of risks increases for both the driver and people sharing the road. While the shorter training time opens up additional testing spots for individuals to take the test needed to become an HGV drive, it also means that learning crucial skills have been removed from the test. A BBC article states “The Road Haulage Association (RHA) is concerned that 14

January 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

changes like removing the reversing maneuver from the test - which makes it shorter - and assessing it separately are a step backward when it comes to safety.” Further in the article Andrew Malcom, chief executive of the UKbased logistics company The Malcolm Group, states “In principle, I can understand what they've done, to try to unlock test dates. However, I am seriously concerned about the safety aspect. I think they've cut far too much out the process of the test - that's my biggest worry." With limited labor resources and increased demand, coupled with the pressure facilities are continuously faced with to perform at high levels of throughput, safety risks emerge. To meet daily quotas, warehouse personnel need to work at a high speed which often results in shortcuts being made. The pressure to work more quickly, combined with drivers working long hours with less experience will have an impact on safety, especially at the loading dock. An article from Industrial Safety & Hygiene News (ISHN) states “Twenty-five percent of all industrial accidents occur at the loading dock. And for each accident that occurs, there are about 600 near-misses.” That statistic is prior to the increase in eCommerce demand, supply chain backlog, pandemic, and labor shortage, one can only imagine that statistic has increased since. To mitigate the risk of accidents at warehouse facilities between new HGV drivers and forklift operators, loading dock safety systems are strongly recommended to ensure clear communication during the loading and unloading process. Conclusion The supply chain backlog we are experiencing is the result of an increase in demand, a global pandemic, lack of transportation means, and a labor shortage all present at the same time. These issues have resulted in new staff, low stocked items, higher prices, and long lead times all of which have implications on safety. While effort has been made by government leaders, agencies, companies, and individuals to reduce the effect these issues are having on the global economy, we may be seeing lasting safety implications as well as numerous other effects from the history-making supply chain backlog and driver shortage of 2021 for years to come. How to Improve Your Protective Packaging Without Breaking the Bank Packaging can be a surprisingly costly business expense, but there are easy ways to improve its quality without sacrificing affordability. It’s vital to invest in this since online shopping is more popular than ever before. Demand for e-commerce products increases the need for companies to use high-quality protective packaging, but this can be highly expensive, especially with paper prices rising. The first thing to consider when trying to cut back on packaging costs is what exactly you are shipping. This will influence all the other factors that go into your design. For example, electronics are often sensitive to electrostatic discharge, so they must be shipped in an anti-static bag, regardless of any additional packaging. Similarly, some mechanical parts can be damaged by contact with other components or by excessive turbulence during the shipping process. These items may need more padding. Everything from the climate a product needs to be in to its vulnerability to any travel-related hazards needs to be considered before refining the protective packaging further. Item-Appropriate Package Sizes The first and easiest way to reduce business costs while improving design is by closing the gap between item and package size. It can be challenging to find packaging that is a perfect fit for every item in your lineup, but it’s possible. Remember, you are paying for the quantity of material a box or envelope uses. Even if it may seem cheaper to use a one-size-fits-all approach and only buy one or two box sizes, it may cost you more in the long run. This is due to unneeded material being wasted on small items. Optimizing package size may mean leaving standardization behind to create your own custom-sized boxes or envelopes. This may sound more expensive, and the cost of designing them needs to be considered. However, in terms of sheer materials, custom box designs could be less expensive. For example, electronics e-commerce retailer Newegg uses on-demand packaging for many of its products, in combination with some standard-size box options. A full sheet of flat cardboard can potentially package more items because each box made from it is the minimum necessary size with no excess material. Smaller, 16

January 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

tighter packaging also reduces the cost required to fill void space with other packaging materials. While some items may still need a bit of padding, you won’t be paying to ship plastic bags full of air or boxes stuffed with filler paper. Keep It Simple One of the easiest ways to save money on protective packaging is by reducing complexity. Not all items need a custom-fitted foam shell or a fancy box design. Packaging like that drives up prices through custom designs and expensive molding or printing. Even the kind of padding you use can be simplified. Rather than using a specialized bubble wrap to fill space inside boxes, try air pillows, which are essentially empty plastic bags puffed with air. Quality of coverage on items is much more important than quantity, as well. For example, delicate machine parts aren’t stuffed into boxes with every inch of space filled with packing peanuts or paper. Individual pieces are carefully wrapped in padding instead, and dividers are used to keep them from moving around. This is much more effective than focusing on filling void space. While the quality over quantity approach may sound complex, it is much more efficient because it is easily reproducible and methodical. This means that wrapping products for shipping or fitting boxes with padding can be automated, increasing productivity and efficiency. Another benefit of simple packaging to keep in mind is the environmental impact. More consumers are pursuing plastic-free lifestyles, so the packaging companies use can impact their perception of the brand. Smaller boxes and minimal interior packing lead to less waste, making sustainability-conscious customers happy and reducing business costs. Soft or Hard Packaging There are generally two choices available for main exterior packaging: cardboard or plastic. Both have their advantages and drawbacks, in terms of functionality as well as price. This connects back to the core consideration of the specific needs of your products. Just as not all products are fit for the same size box, not all items require a box at all. Simple envelopes, bubble mailers or plastic bags can work just as well for many products.

Contrastingly, more sensitive items, such as specially-treated metals or electronics, may need specialized padding and protection to insulate them against things like unideal climates, static, or turbulence. For items like these, the extra cost of interior packaging or reinforcement is necessary, but the same does not apply to all products. A good rule of thumb may be to consider how you might like your item to be packaged if you were a customer. Some protection is beneficial, but large foam or cardboard inserts can be challenging for customers to dispose of, as well. Considering what level of contact with outside forces is acceptable for your product will help determine whether hard packaging is necessary or not. Consider Everything in the Box The things that go into your product box are just as important as those that go into your shipping container. Items are often packaged with extras inside, such as catalogs, pamphlets, legal documents and other papers. Some companies have saved money by going digital instead, which significantly reduces business costs. While choosing protective packaging that minimizes void space is ideal, it may not be affordable for your

business’s needs. If this is the case, consider creative alternatives. You may find that you don’t need to buy expensive plastic padding or fitted foam blocks. Some companies use clean shredded paper or cardboard in place of packing peanuts or wrinkled recycled paper in place of air pillows. In fact, reusable packaging has become popular in the industry for its cost-saving capabilities. Depending on the nature of your product, these more budget-friendly options may get the job done adequately. Another approach is to utilize the items inside the packaging themselves. Products can be packed in such a way that they prevent each other from rattling around during transit. Simple cardboard or even wood dividers can help with this. Smart, Affordable Protective Packaging Protective packaging doesn’t have to cost businesses excessive amounts of money. Everything from slightly smaller boxes to digitizing documentation can save money on each product you ship. With a little creativity and innovative solutions, businesses can save thousands every year. Emily Newton is the Editor-in-Chief of Revolutionized Magazine. Ransomware Readiness and Recovery --Eight Do's and Don'ts Here are eight ways to prevent a ransomware attack, and eight ways to recover from an attack if you fall victim to one: Ransomware Defenses to Help Prevent Attacks: 1. Add Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all of your company’s email accounts and on all external access to your network (VPN, TeamViewer, WebEx, etc.). This will help prevent a cybercriminal from taking over an email account using a compromised username/password. 2. If your company uses Windows Active Directory, do NOT log in to computers with Domain Admin accounts. There is an attack called “Pass the Hash” that will steal encrypted (hashed) credentials left behind. If There were seven people seated around the table: The you must log in with a Domain Admin account, change CEO, the VP, the CFO, the Special Agent from the FBI, the password. the owner, the forensics technician, and the company’s 3. Either we pay the No, it won’t keep out the cybercriminals that VPN into ransom or we begin liquidating the assets of the company your country before attacking you, but it’s surprising how as soon as possible. Which is the lesser of two evils?” many cybercriminals don’t take the time to do that. The CISO negotiated the ransom down to $410,000. 7. Business Management continued following. Please note that most of these need to be done before the attack takes place: 1. OFFLINE backups. These are backups that are kept off of your network. Cybercriminals try to delete your backups. If your backups are not on your network, the bad guys can’t destroy them. 2. Tested restore procedures. If you try to restore your backups only when you need them, you are rolling the dice every time you are in a real bind. 3. Offline restore methodology. Don’t begin a restore with your network still attached to the Internet. Ransomware cases often unfold where the cybercriminals still have hooks into a company’s network, and they destroy the used-to-be-offline backups as soon as the restore process begins. 4. Workstation reimages. You need a clean workstation image to restore workstations quickly if you suspect they have been compromised. 5. Server rebuilds. You need a clean server image to recreate your servers quickly. 6. Pre-negotiated incident response team contract. Find a cyber incident response company and get a contract in place. That way you will know how to “call in the cavalry” very quickly as opposed to going through contract negotiations in the middle of a crisis. 7. 35% free drive space on all network drives. Ransomware often bloats the data on the drives it encrypts. As soon as a drive fills up, the encryption process will keep trying to move forward, but every file it encrypts after the drive is full will be unrecoverable. 8. If you have cybersecurity liability insurance, call your insurance company ASAP! There are many stories of insurance policies with a clause stating that the customer must inform their insurance company of a suspected incident within 24 hours of the initial discovery. If they take a few days to confirm that the incident was real, it can be an expensive mistake. If all companies followed the specific recommendations above, ransomware cybercriminals would become a thing of the past. With proactive action and a good cybersecurity awareness training program for your employees, cybercrime is a solvable problem! Feature Story

American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) mobilizes in wake of recent tornadoes

As relief efforts begin for this weekend’s devastating tornadoes, the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) is preparing to work overtime – and asking members of the logistics community to be ready to help. “The last few days have been filled with tragic reports from areas affected by at least 30 tornadoes, including a long track tornado that crossed four states. We mourn alongside those who’ve lost friends, family, and coworkers to these events,” said Kathy Fulton, ALAN’s Executive Director. “In response, ALAN has activated to support these communities via our network of non-profit partners.” ALAN has an active Disaster Micro-site where it features a list of its latest open requests, and it will be updating this site frequently as requests for post-tornado assistance arrive. “That hasn’t happened yet, because people are still actively engaged in life-saving search and rescue efforts. But once humanitarian organizations begin assessing what is needed in the affected areas, they’ll be requesting various forms of logistics assistance from ALAN, including transportation, warehousing, and material handling,” Fulton said. “In light of that, we’re asking people to connect with us frequently over the next few days and weeks, because that’s when the real need for our industry’s support will begin.” Kathy Fulton Fulton added that the initial requests for ALAN’s assistance should start coming in within the next 48 to 72 hours. 24

January 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

In the interim, ALAN is coordinating and communicating with many of the non-profit groups that will be providing first response and relief efforts – and asking businesses NOT to self-deploy or organize collection drives. “We have already begun hearing about collection drives and ‘trucks driving around with no place to deliver their donations.’ Although the intention behind these efforts is good, they often create more challenges than they solve, including getting in the way of rescue efforts,” Fulton said. “So please don’t add to an already difficult situation. If you truly wish to help, send funds. Cash donations allow non-profits to buy what they need, when and where they need it, and that will help survivors faster.” “Now, as always, we wish that we didn’t have to send out notifications like this, because it means there’s another community that’s suffering,” said Fulton. “However we’re grateful to know that so many members of the logistics industry are anxious to help, and we’re thankful in advance for everything they’ll be doing to help us save – and improve – the lives of disaster survivors.” ALAN’s Helpful Post-Tornado Relief Do’s And Don’ts DO make sure your employees are safe – and supported If any of your facilities were located in any of these storms paths be sure to check in with your employees to ensure they are safe and sound. And if they have been affected, make helping them and their families your first priority, because even though many government and nonprofits will be stepping in to provide relief, few things are more meaningful than knowing that the people we work with (and for) have our backs. DON’T forget that we’re here for you Have any of your operations been affected by the tornados? Do you need any specific information or insights – and if so, what kind? Drop us an e-mail at ops@alanaid.org. We’ll do our best to get you an answer or to put you in touch with someone who can. DO let us know if you might be willing to help If you have warehouse space, trucks, equipment, or expertise to share, go ahead and offer it now. (And please know that we understand you’re making an offer, not a

Feature Story continued guaranteed commitment to provide services. It just lets us know that you’re okay with us reaching out and at least asking if you might be able to assist ) The more advanced information we have about available resources, the more quickly and effectively we’ll be able to fulfill requests for assistance as they come in. DON’T assume you can’t be of help just because your operations are nowhere where a tornado hit Often the donated materials that urgently need to get to disaster sites may be located much farther away and require more logistics support than you might imagine. As a result, the seemingly random or remote location, service, or piece of equipment you’re offering may be just the ticket. DO check ALAN’s website and Disaster Micro-Site often over the next few weeks We’ll be updating it frequently as conditions change, including posting specific relief requests and sharing any important infrastructure updates. DON’T host a collection drive for products Although the intention behind these drives is good, they often create more challenges than they solve – including adding more products to a supply chain that

is already under tremendous strain. At a time when transportation capacity to disaster-impacted markets is so overloaded, the last thing we need to do is choke it even more. In a similar vein, don’t self-deploy. Often having extra, unsolicited “help” while search and rescue efforts are taking place can impede critical first response efforts. DO consider helping in other ways instead If you’re looking for a tangible way to engage your employees in hurricane relief, pick a humanitarian organization and collect money for it instead. Such donations will be much more useful and efficient, especially right now. And unlike many post-disaster product donations (which often end up in landfills), they will not go to waste.

Nano One announces retirement of Director and President John Lando

National Rack Repair, Inc. is now the North American home of the Rack Avenger. National Rack Repair holds the exclusive license to market the Rack Avenger repair kits throughout North America. Additionally, National Rack Repair will hold the responsibility for product sourcing decisions including its newest manufacturing partner, SpaceGuard Products. Eddie Murphy, CEO of National Rack Repair, explains why the Rack Avenger and the topic of rack safety are such an important one right now. “Distribution and warehousing are growing at a record rate given the current pressures on our supply chain to meet customers’ growing needs for products in a shortened time frame.

Let pedestrians and operators know if someone is just around the corner with our New LOOK-OUT ™

• Avoid Forklift Accidents • Alert Workers & Pedestrians • Warehouse, Yard and Office Applications • Reduce Liabilities • Increase Up Time

Alert Employees of Dangerous Collisions BEFORE They Occur! LOOK-OUT™

Currently, we have 42 standard package offerings, ranging from one-way to fourway intersections. These units can be mounted to racks, walls, or ceiling hung for the large units. Additionally, our new DUAL USE series consists of units that can be used INDOORS and OUTDOORS. Our units are Essential for Traffic Control.

Our LOOK OUT™ product line offers a versatile line of safety sensors that will alert workers and pedestrians if a forklift or other moving object is approaching just around the corner. Our sensors are great for any traffic area and are quickly becoming a standard for warehouse traffic control. Avoid accidents and potential liabilities to your facility. We have LOOK OUT™ products for just about every safety application for your warehouse, yard, or office needs. Additionally, if you need a custom solution, we will work with you to assure that your safety needs are met to complete satisfaction.

Protect your employees, visitors, and guests from dangerous collisions with forklifts or heavy equipment while walking through your facility. Safety and caution should be an automatic response to your implemented systems. We offer both interior and exterior sensors on our systems that can be mounted anywhere. They help control traffic concerns and communicate that someone is approaching from a spot that may not be otherwise visible.

When the sensors detect motion in blind spots around a corner or a door way, it begins to flash a warning to the pedestrian or operator who is approaching that intersection. Additionally, sensors will signal the lights on either side of the unit to flash as to indicate someone is approaching the same intersection. Thus, everyone approaching that intersection is informed of movement and will know to proceed with caution. The sensors may be adjusted to specific angles and lengths that will meet the needs of your facility. Signals are sent via bright flashing red LED lights on each visible side of the units.

LOOK OUT 1 R

AVOID DEADLY AND COSTLY FORKLIFT COLLISIONS As workers juggle more projects and deadlines with shorter time constraints, safety can become jeopardized. As this happens, so do accidents. 40% of all forklift fatalities are caused by an individual being struck or run over by a forklift. Many of these accidents and fatalities can be avoided by warning pedestrians and forklift operators of approaching danger. Our LOOK OUT™ sensor alert warning system allows for quick and easy recognition of possible hazardous situations. Why take chances of liabilities when you can avoid accidents and protect your most valuable assets: your employees!

Blind spots, corners, and dangerous intersections can cause series accidents. Wouldn’t it be great if someone was always there to alert you of oncoming traffic? Despite Safety Supervisors efforts, they cannot always be there to prevent collisions. Thankfully, our units are there to scan traffic areas and alert 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • The Look Out units cover 2, 3, and 4-way intersections. • The Hall Door and Overhead Door units cover hallways and overhead doors. • The Basics detect on one side and alert on the other. • The Dual Use series of units can be used for interior/exterior applications.
