Cover Story

Racks, shelving and storage manufacturers anticipate fewer disruptions, shorter lead times in 2022

Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that prove to be the most vital, but we don’t have to tell that to anyone using a rack or shelf in a product fulfillment center. The keeper of all products and inventory, industrial storage equipment must be quickly accessible, seamless, and efficient. And if this last year has taught us anything, storage systems must absolutely enhance productivity to keep up with rapid-fire industry changes. Storage systems manufacturers and suppliers tasked with meeting these demands say they are working to keep up with orders, despite the supply chain issues shared by nearly every industry. “It’s all about speed and efficiency these days. For several of our large clients, it’s seconds that count. Saving a second or two in processing time allows more orders to be filled,” said Robert Railis, Director of Business Development at Custom Industrial Products. The Melbourne-Fla.-based company manufacturers vertical reciprocating conveyors, modular mezzanine, and safety products. The company’s mezzanines support the rack shelving, and business has been very good, Railis said. “In today’s world, it’s all about maximizing space by moving upwards rather than expanding outwards. Companies are buying mezzanines as a second floor and using our VRCs to move products to the mezzanines,” he added. Using mezzanines for storage clears ground floor space to be used as work areas. Other customers use them to support modular offices and production equipment as a way to increase production. Business at Tri-Boro Storage Products in Brooklyn, N.Y. is no less brisk, with factory orders continuing at an 6

aggressive pace, said Nelson J. Cantillo, vice president of sales and marketing. “The most common inquiry we get is, ‘How soon can I get my shipment?’ Also, ‘Will prices ever drop to more reasonable levels or is this the new normal?’” Cantillo said. He believes 2022 will bring more reasonable lead times below double digits. As far as costs, steel pricing is “leveling off,” but the cost of production, packaging, and shipping have escalated, Castillo added. “The challenges faced this year and last have been unprecedented in that it was a “perfect storm” of unusually high product demand despite exorbitant and escalating raw materials costs, unpredictable supplier shipments/delays, and the reduced plant efficiencies as a result of employee absence and a shortage of available new labor candidates,” he said. Meanwhile, at Miami-based Quantum Storage Solutions, the business is booming. “Our top-line sales are off the charts and we are having our best sales year — by far — in our company’s history,” said Ed Granger, Director of Sales at Quantum, one of the fastest-growing manufacturers of plastic bins and bin storage systems. But like other manufacturers, supply chain bottlenecks are challenging the company’s ability to get products to customers. “The supply chain delays are very real and inventory outages are prevalent and the cost of importation has skyrocketed,” Granger said. “In summer of 2020, we were paying $3,500 per container in shipping cost, and in 2021 we’ve paid as much as $27,000. Our customers really are only asking for product — those who have the product are getting the orders, and cost seems to be irrelevant. Inventory is king!” Custom Industrial Products is encountering similar challenges finding raw materials to manufacture their systems. “Currently, we have some parts back-ordered for six months. While this is an extreme example, there are big disruptions to our supply chain. So much so, we find ourselves spending a great deal of time sourcing parts and vendors,” Railis said. Rising costs have also been a continual challenge. The price of steel is up an estimated 52% and electronics 40%. “As a result, we have been forced to increase our selling price twice this year. It was not a decision we took lightly but really had no other viable option,” he said. But

Cover Story continued expectations for a quieter, less troublesome next year are high, allowing manufacturers to continue to identify creative solutions and adaptable equipment. Railis said that while research shows warehouse construction is expected to stay strong, with a slight dip in new equipment orders, the practices implemented this year are likely here to stay. “We’re confident that the moving vertically is going to stay hot, especially if construction materials continue to rise,” he said. “The pandemic has, in part, forever changed how we shop. Ecommerce shopping and same/next day deliveries exploded, and companies need to keep up.” Railis said Customer Industrial Products will continue to create greater efficiencies in their current line while developing new products to increase production and improve safety. He said they have seen a recent shift in clientele over the company’s 25-year history, from traditionally large companies with multiple distribution centers to a “healthier balance” of companies of all sizes, especially those in eCommerce. Granger believes those in charge of inventory will be influenced by the conditions of the past year, erring on the side of caution by keeping more, rather than less, on the shelves and racks. Quantum will be focused on

continuing to engineer top-of-the-line bins used in the automation process, with an eye toward making them stronger and flatter, Granger said. One of the projects is making industrial bins that withstand some conveyor systems. When empty, the receptacles can sometimes become damaged as they crash into one another sliding down shutes on some conveyor systems. “Quantum is able to manufacture bins being used in this fashion with an extra additive that provides more strength and durability,” Granger said. “It comes with an additional cost, but the companies we have worked with are willing to pay a little extra for this feature as it extends the life of the bin.” Customers are also requesting flat-bottom bins for greater connection between the bin and the conveyor belt. “Lastly it seems more customers are looking at bins where the inside can be divided so that it can house more than one type of item; being able to divide the inside of the bin helps to prevent items from becoming comingled,” Granger said. Tri-Boro is continuing to add work-center and workflow initiatives that will help to lessen lead times on the production of finished goods and reduce reliance on physical labor, Cantillo said. He added that while

Cover Story continued traditional physical and skilled labor is still so crucial on the plant floor, was fortunate enough to begin implementing additional automated and robotic work cells in various fabrication departments just prior to the pandemic hitting in early 2020. Next year will bring more advancements in the industry. “We are going to continue to add to our application and safety centric products and accessories such as the Steel-Clad internal frame impact panels, field bolt-on Heavy Duty Bottom Horizontal bracing, and our latest 50% Open Pattern Perf Decks,” Cantillo said.

How to respond to Vaccine Misinformation in the workplace

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way many Americans worked last year. So many businesses suffered as a result of the virus, with some having to close their doors completely. Now, thanks to the vaccine rollout, things are starting to get back to normal and workplaces are reopening – even if we still have a long way to go. As of now, nearly 400 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been given in the U.S. But that number would likely be higher if there wasn’t so much vaccine misinformation going around. Because this particular vaccine was created quickly and authorized for emergency use, some people have been skeptical about getting it. While that’s a personal choice, it’s not okay for individuals to spread incorrect information about the shot in your place of business. No matter what your business’ vaccine policy is, keeping your employees well-informed and safe should be a top priority. So, what can you do to encourage safety and discourage information about public health concerns in the workplace? Work with a professional Unfortunately, social media has made it very easy for misinformation about the vaccine to spread quickly. Anyone can create a meme or a legitimate-looking graph/ statistic sheet and post it online. That doesn’t mean it’s true or accurate. According to the CDC, ways to find credible information about the vaccine include: • Checking credible sources • Making sure the information is up-to-date • Asking the right questions • Understanding medical jargon 10

If you want to make it easier for your employees to get more information and have their questions answered, consider working with a professional. Having an epidemiologist come into your workplace is a great way to show your staff you care about their wellbeing. Epidemiologists specialize in analyzing data that affects public health. They also develop public health awareness programs that can teach people how to protect themselves from outbreaks. By letting an epidemiologist speak to your employees, they can give them real facts about the vaccine and directly answer any questions about misinformation or hesitation. Provide accurate information In addition to having a healthcare professional speak with your employees, you should consider it your responsibility to provide accurate information. As with any vaccine, there are a few exceptions when it comes to who should receive it. For the most part, though, it has been proven safe and effective. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines save anywhere from 2-3 million lives each year. The COVID-19 vaccine may even go beyond that. Use information directly from the CDC, WHO, or trusted medical journals/websites to share the facts with your employees. Having that information readily available can help to dispel any myths that might be floating around the office. It’s also a good idea to make sure you’re well-educated on the effectiveness and safety of the COVID-19 vaccine. If misinformation is being spread, some employees might come directly to you to discuss it. Being prepared with the right information is crucial in reassuring them and shutting down falsehoods. Keep your employees safe Depending on the size of your workplace, you might have different policies in place for keeping your employees safe. Maybe you’re not requiring the vaccine but encouraging it. Whatever the case, it’s still important to show your employees that their safety is your top concern – especially as variants are still running rampant around the globe. You can do your part by creating a safety strategy that includes:

Safety First continued • Social distancing • Remote work options • Signs that encourage frequent hand-washing • Improving air quality • Mask-wearing indoors Simply having a policy in place can make a big difference in how safe your employees feel. Some people don’t feel ready to go back to work because their employers aren’t taking things as seriously as they should. Everyone wants to return to normal as soon as possible. But we aren’t there yet. That’s why these individualized policies and strategies are so important.

In this fast-paced world where misinformation is spread so quickly and easily, it can be hard to keep up. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But, when you’re running a business, truth, and safety need to go handin-hand. Keep these suggestions in mind to respond to vaccine misinformation in the workplace. Doing so will give your employees peace of mind and will keep false statements and statistics from spreading a virus of fear across your company. Warehouse Solutions

Optimizing Automation: Designing a disruptionproof warehouse

With the buzz surrounding the broken supply chain and the immense labor shortage, it’s no surprise that many warehouses are scrambling to find solutions. Many of these challenges—the truck driver shortage, general labor shortage, freight idling at ports and an increase in consumer demand—are greatly impacting operations within warehousing facilities. Designing for Disruption A crucial element to a warehouse designed to overcome these challenges head on is automation. For those who have embarked on automating their systems, or those who are thinking about doing so, it is imperative that the investments in time, cost, and resources are laser focused on extracting maximum value and flexibility. Too often, expectations are mismanaged, or the preparation needed to embrace automation and deal with its idiosyncrasies is lacking. Even worse, designing flexibility into the system is often overlooked, as are practical ways to grow the system, accommodate differing order characteristics, and in some cases, the absence of IT infrastructure to support new or existing software and firmware systems. To design a warehouse that is as “disruption proof ” as possible requires a command of both hardware and software systems from the provider. Solutions that are resourcefully pieced together from multiple vendors or locations often become obsolete when combined as a system. This is primarily due to a lack of standardization, which leads to an insufficient long-term vision of how these pieces develop over time. As automated systems grow more complex, ask yourself: 14

December 2021

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

• How many entities are required to support the system long-term? • Are all sourcing locations committed to long-term support of the product? • Do they have the same vision for their product lifecycle? • What software platform will have the flexibility to tie these systems together and ensure adequate standardization to enable upgrade paths and longterm support? Developing a set of clear standards is critical to accommodating multiple support alternatives—in-house and/or vendor provided—as well as train operators and maintenance staff across numerous facilities. Keeping it Simple The industry is experiencing a wave of new technology and fresh concepts that make big promises without the expertise or history to back it up. Instead, future-proofing automated warehousing solutions comes down to good old-fashioned quality coupled with proven, robust, and simple solutions. In fact, the simpler the better. Often, the genius in a design is how fundamentally easy it is to build, commission, operate, and maintain. Fashionable, new technology may not hold up to the rigor of 24/7 operation, nor deliver on promised performance goals. Choosing the Right Team A proven track record and a commitment to quality from vendors who are passionate and personally invested in the success of the system should be the standard for today’s prudent investor. As we read about the pace of mergers and acquisitions, a consistent change of leadership, rotation of technical talent, and desire to maximize revenue, rather than value, it is harder than ever to accurately predict whether the design and implementation teams will be there long-term. Make this a point to evaluate: corporate culture is important and often guarantees the staying power and overall experience when implementing these systems. Factoring in Cost Optimizing the spend on automation is also no trivial matter. Capital budgeting techniques, such as Internal Rate of Return (IRR) or Net Present Value (NPV), are

Warehouse Solutions continued commonly used, and design options within an automated solution can be complicated to evaluate. Each option can, and often does, have its own justification—and should be analyzed as such. Product damage and maintenance costs are often overlooked and can impact a project’s IRR. Extracting the best value requires a deep understanding from people who are experienced in operations and who will be honest about the role that these costs play over time. An Honest Evaluation Future proofing a solution to avoid disruption may require some compromises in the design as well. For example, sizing an automated warehouse, involves clarity around packaging and unit load size requirements. Large automated systems can be difficult to alter structurally, so sometimes a small sacrifice in storage density can provide the flexibility to accommodate future packaging changes or palletizing patterns. Regardless, sizing the maximum load envelope is critical to ensure smooth operations without re-work at the dock. So don’t rely on the packaging engineers’ drawings to establish the envelope of the system. Measure “real” product, discuss with the team, and receive buy-in from all affected parties to get these design dimensions right.

Integrating the Right Software Finally, limiting disruptions within automated warehousing facilities requires integrated software recovery tools to ensure any issues can be handled expeditiously. These tools should be well integrated at the software and firmware level, ensuring that data and tracking information remains uncompromised during any manual intervention. Technology and development platforms, like Unity, offer incredible 3D visual interface experiences that provide significant information—in an easily digestible format. In summary, we can do a lot to futureproof an automated warehousing solution. The concepts noted above are a few key guidelines to keep in mind. Most importantly, partnering with competent experts who have the experience and track record to prove it will ensure your warehouse can handle today’s challenges and the unknown ahead. Ryan Smith is the Vice President of Automation at Westfalia Technologies, Inc. To learn more about optimizing automation, he recently hosted a webinar available on-demand here.

Business Management

Resolving fluidity challenges in today’s bottlenecked supply chain environment with technology

In today’s demanding supply chain environment, SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) are facing unprecedented supply chain challenges much like larger companies and, as a result, have been investing in their own fleets due to the lack of equipment available in the marketplace. Equipment scarcity as well as the reliance on outdated, legacy technologies to resolve today’s challenges are fast becoming the key underlying obstacles affecting SMEs to maintain their competitive advantage in today’s bottlenecked supply chain reality. More and more, companies are understanding that along with the investment in the assets must be the investment in asset management technology. It has become clear that the right asset management platform—meaning the right technology, the right team of experts, the right level of adaptability and scalability-can serve as an invaluable tool to not only manage assets but also transform operations and streamline processes. The growing importance of technology for competitive advantage While SMEs are looking for technology to help them respond to market shifts and evolving business strategies, they typically rely on modest IT budgets and stretchedthin admin teams. As their current software is reaching its end-of-life phase, SMEs are looking for cost-effective, scalable technology that can address today’s needs as well as those of the future. They rely on technology partners to help understand what is necessary: Is it an upgrade to a current system? Is a modification or new feature in order? 18

December 2021

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

Will a plug-in elevate the system to where it needs to be? Should this be a start-from-scratch system? There is no doubt that as time goes on, SMEs--even those who may have resisted technology-- will rely on technology services and solutions more and more, as the agility and flexibility of small and mediumsized enterprises within the supply chain have become ever more vital to supply chain fluidity. Innovative asset management technology platforms are enabling fleet managers to optimize their assets, control costs, manage M&R (maintenance & repair) as well as reduce admin costs. Tools designed to manage M&R help ensure streamlined communications, accountability, productivity, and, most importantly, safe equipment. Customers utilizing asset management technology realize these robust benefits and more. When selecting an asset management platform, it’s important to work with a partner with a proven track record, such as, Consolidated Intermodal Technologies (CIT), which was developed by Consolidated Chassis Management (CCM) and, for the last 10 years, has served as the asset management tool for its chassis pools. CIT is designed for fleet managers looking to upgrade their technology to support a growing fleet in a sustainable, scalable, and efficient manner. CIT’s platform focuses on various intermodal equipment fleets, including chassis, trailers, containers, reefers, and gensets of around 100 units. These types of technology solutions are emerging as a competitive advantage by providing real-time visibility that enables businesses to make strategic decisions based upon quantitative analysis. Efficient asset management will provide the opportunity for SMEs and larger companies to outsource many back-office activities, enabling internal resources to be redirected to valueadding processes, including supply chain management. In fact, these services offer the possibility for SMEs to reduce labor costs, and the human capital necessary to manage their supply chain operations. When it comes to investing in technology, we at CIT believe it is important to remember that one size does not fit all. It is crucial to collaborate with a technology partner who understands your business, your IT capabilities, and resources as well as your goals. With the

AD DEADLINE

Let pedestrians and operators know if someone is just around the corner with our New LOOK-OUT ™

• Avoid Forklift Accidents • Alert Workers & Pedestrians • Warehouse, Yard and Office Applications • Reduce Liabilities • Increase Up Time

Alert Employees of Dangerous Collisions BEFORE They Occur! LOOK-OUT™

Currently, we have 42 standard package offerings, ranging from one-way to fourway intersections. These units can be mounted to racks, walls, or ceiling hung for the large units. Additionally, our new DUAL USE series consists of units that can be used INDOORS and OUTDOORS. Our units are Essential for Traffic Control.

Our LOOK OUT™ product line offers a versatile line of safety sensors that will alert workers and pedestrians if a forklift or other moving object is approaching just around the corner. Our sensors are great for any traffic area and are quickly becoming a standard for warehouse traffic control. Avoid accidents and potential liabilities to your facility. We have LOOK OUT™ products for just about every safety application for your warehouse, yard, or office needs. Additionally, if you need a custom solution, we will work with you to assure that your safety needs are met to complete satisfaction.

Protect your employees, visitors, and guests from dangerous collisions with forklifts or heavy equipment while walking through your facility. Safety and caution should be an automatic response to your implemented systems. We offer both interior and exterior sensors on our systems that can be mounted anywhere. They help control traffic concerns and communicate that someone is approaching from a spot that may not be otherwise visible.

When the sensors detect motion in blind spots around a corner or a door way, it begins to flash a warning to the pedestrian or operator who is approaching that intersection. Additionally, sensors will signal the lights on either side of the unit to flash as to indicate someone is approaching the same intersection. Thus, everyone approaching that intersection is informed of movement and will know to proceed with caution. The sensors may be adjusted to specific angles and lengths that will meet the needs of your facility. Signals are sent via bright flashing red LED lights on each visible side of the units.

LOOK OUT 1 R

AVOID DEADLY AND COSTLY FORKLIFT COLLISIONS As workers juggle more projects and deadlines with shorter time constraints, safety can become jeopardized. As this happens, so do accidents. 40% of all forklift fatalities are caused by an individual being struck or run over by a forklift. Many of these accidents and fatalities can be avoided by warning pedestrians and forklift operators of approaching danger. Our LOOK OUT™ sensor alert warning system allows for quick and easy recognition of possible hazardous situations. Why take chances of liabilities when you can avoid accidents and protect your most valuable assets: your employees!

Blind spots, corners, and dangerous intersections can cause series accidents. Wouldn’t it be great if someone was always there to alert you of oncoming traffic? Despite Safety Supervisors efforts, they cannot always be there to prevent collisions. Thankfully, our units are there to scan traffic areas and alert 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • The Look Out units cover 2, 3, and 4-way intersections. • The Hall Door and Overhead Door units cover hallways and overhead doors. • The Basics detect on one side and alert on the other. • The Dual Use series of units can be used for interior/exterior applications. Examples of these units are shown below. LOOK OUT 4
