Smart Spaces: A look at the latest in container and storage solutions in the material handling industry

Planning for and optimally using space is key to the smooth and successful function of an operation. This month, Material Handling Network asked experts in the industry about how to best implement containers and storage in the current business environment. Re-thinking space At AutoStore, Jon Schechter, business development manager, focuses on retail and fulfillment center and distribution planning in the North American region. The company, founded in 1996, is a warehouse robot technology company that invented and continues to pioneer cube storage automation, the densest order-fulfillment solution in existence, according to the business website. “Our focus is to marry software and hardware with human abilities to create the future of warehouses,” the site said. The two recent challenges Schechter’s team most often hears from clients are labor shortages and space pressure. On the labor front, the need is more pronounced in logistics cluster areas, according to Schechter. “They are seeing competition for the labor force they do have, which is driving up cost,” he said. 6

A second reason AutoStore clients consider automation solutions is the need for space. “Every facility and operator is always looking for more space,” said Schechter, who said AutoStore provides systems for storage that are four times denser than the comparable manual storage. Some clients are at the critical decision juncture of whether to buy more land and expand a facility, move and potentially disrupt operations, or do more with the real estate already in the facility, according to Schechter. AutoStore has five core modules that are assembled into all products: bins that store, the grid that holds the system together, the robots that drive on top of that grid and deliver through ports, and the controller or software, according to Schechter. He noted that all of the trade shows and industry events have been back this year. “People are thinking about how they use their labor and their space in new ways,” Schechter said. The need for speed The demand for optimal storage systems has been evident at Quantum Storage Systems, as well. “Our business is booming. Last year was a record year and this year we are at 22 percent over last year,” said Ed Granger, director of sales. “The orders keep coming in every day,” he said. Quantum started in the 1990s as a specialty injection molder, and then business leaders decided to pursue a niche in the market by manufacturing industrial bins for the marketplace, according to Granger. What began as a six-page catalog of product offerings is now over 100 pages long today, he said. The company sells in the industrial marketplace through distributors, reaching schools, food service,

The desire for quick delivery will also Quantum Storage Systems bills itself as offering continue, with speed being more important than the largest selection of industrial plastic bins and cost in some situations, Granger said. “They need warehouse bin storage systems. “From rugged and what they need and as quickly as possible,” he said. strong stackable storage bins to tough durable nesting shelf bins for the industrial, material handling and consumer markets,” the company website said.

Quantum opened a distribution and sales center in Chicago in 2010, creating a stronger presence with the 2,000-square-foot center, according to Granger. “What we’re experiencing is our customers need our standard product and they need it as quickly as possible,” he said, noting business orders range widely, from as small as $12 up to $120,000. Granger said the current boom has followed pandemic shutdowns. “Everybody turned on their business at the same time. Everybody needed

“Quantum has the most comprehensive bin selection in the industry!” - Everyone

In general, Granger said maximizing storage space is a more cost-effective solution than expanding. An operation can look to vertical storage ideas, utilizing floor space effectively and using wall space, he said. Quantum Storage offers panels that can be attached to a wall where bins can hang, along with wire shelving solutions. Granger said the business’ wire shelving is popular with customers. “We can really do a very dense storage operation,” he said, noting that design services can be helpful in storage planning. “Any end user who has a warehouse, I would suggest they have a storage specialist from the outside” for design ideas, Granger said. Recyclable packaging The demand for reusable plastic containers and pallets has been on the rise recently, according to Alex Hempel, senior director of the retail supply chain for ORBIS Corporation. The company is a reusable packaging manufacturer offering pallet, totes, bulk containers, metal racks, and multiple kinds of dunnage for use in a wide range of material handling applications, said Hempel, who said the durability of the packaging products allow them to last through many cycles of the supply chain. “For example, the Odyssey reusable plastic pallet from ORBIS has 36 times the lifespan of a white wood stringer pallet,” he said. The company helps customers evaluate their supply chain, and design and execute a reusable packaging program.

cleanliness, and increased automation because of labor shortages,” Hempel said, noting sustainability is also top-of-mind for many companies. “This emphasis extends all the way through to packaging choices,” he said, noting reusable packing solutions offer benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, a good return on investment thanks to a long useful life, and recyclability. And certain reusable plastic containers can be stacked when collapsed or nested when open to provide efficient use of space on the manufacturing floor, in the warehouse, or inside a truck trailer, according to Hempel. For those who are expanding facilities in the near term, Hempel said it is a good time to rethink packaging. A new facility often means new equipment and processes, offering “a great opportunity to integrate reusables,” he said. “It is important to work with your packaging provider

early in that process, so you can specify the right packaging for your application in terms of fit and function. Then they can be part of the decisions,” Hempel said. Operators will want to ensure that nothing slows down their ability for them to do their job effectively and having a packaging solution that is reliable and efficient is key, according to Hempel. “Warehouse labor is getting increasingly difficult to find. To meet these needs, automation and robotics are becoming increasingly widespread,” he said. "That’s where reusable plastic packaging comes in to provide dimensional consistency and repeatable performance for all types of automated systems.” Eileen Mozinski Schmidt is a freelance writer and journalist based in the Greater Milwaukee area. Chain Reaction

From the Factory Floor to the City Sidewalk: A Review of Automate 2022 I recently attended Automate 2022 in Detroit, a premier automation event that spans a powerful showcase of automation solutions from the factory floor to the city sidewalk. A wide range of automation topics was discussed, from the role of robots in the manufacturing process to which AMR to invest in for your material handling to how robots will manage themselves while delivering consumers their takeout dinners. This was a very mature and savvy robotics audience. What was particularly eye-opening for me was that in the context of nascent and emerging technologies, there is a lively debate as to what types of automation are the best fit for specific use cases, especially in the warehouse and fulfillment space. Here are some of my observations from the show. The factory floor still dominates. No surprise, but automation and robots for the factory floor are in a much more mature state than in other aspects of the supply chain. Vendors like Fanuc were proudly displaying a robotic arm capable of deftly picking up and moving a Corvette around as a seasoned waiter would navigate a busy dining room with a full tray of dishes at the London Chop House. The adoption and advancements of robotics arms for the manufacturing sector are well-established within the industry. Look for these learnings and advancements to continue to expand into other parts of the supply chain, especially when it comes to material handling within the warehouse. The potential to combine AMR (autonomous mobile robots) with the robotic arms being used in the factory is the next frontier. Look for the two worlds of robotics to continue to converge toward a combined solution. On the scale of maturity, the warehouse lags behind the factory floor when it comes to automation and robotics. One aspect was clear during my time in Detroit: There remains a learning curve when it comes to the options and 14

August 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

types of automation that are available for those in the warehouse. What struck me was the need to educate about the different types and flavors of automation that are available for warehouse fulfillment. From AGV to AMR, GTP to GTR — the list (of acronyms) goes on. What this indicates is that the market remains in its early days. The interest, need and general curiosity remain high, but the understanding remains relatively low. Nonetheless, there is an appetite to understand this world better because to quote Lou Finazzo from Fanuc, it is no longer “am I going to,” but “I have to,” when it comes to the adoption of automation. One recurring topic throughout the event is the need for interoperability between platforms. While we might not know exactly what type of systems we need, it was evident that as attendees moved toward more automation, those automated ecosystems will almost always be a combination of technologies within a fulfillment operation. That mix of solutions will require interoperability and communication between different robots. To that end, the nonprofit firm Mass Robotics is working with industry leaders to establish standards for communications. Knowing where each robot is, what task they are undertaking, and other basic data is a vital first step. How interoperability matures will be important for the industry as a whole; in all likelihood, there will be a push to have a more centralized command and control platform, allowing warehouse operators to have one command center. This will provide an optimized and harmonized control of all the robotic, and potentially human, assets on the warehouse floor. This need remains vital for the future state of fulfillment and the warehouse, but what that solution will resemble remains a work in progress. I would not expect to have a clear answer any time soon. That said, any warehouse operator looking to bring more robots into their operations must work with their partners to have more clarity on where this is heading and how to prepare.

Chain Reaction continued

Finally, the closer the automation gets to the consumer, the less mature the solutions are. Drone delivery of your prescriptions, your groceries being delivered by an autonomous vehicle, or your most recent e-commerce order being dropped off by a robot all remain somewhere on the horizon. There is no shortage of investment and interest; for example, the sidewalk delivery market has over 30 new robot vendors looking to offer solutions. While this may not come as a surprise, it’s worth noting that moving robots into the “wild” to interact seamlessly amongst the public will take longer. Offset this with robots on the manufacturing floor or the warehouse, where they are in a controlled environment amongst trained personnel. A robot sharing the sidewalk or the grocery store aisle with the public will need greater scrutiny, standards, rules, and comfort levels before it becomes more prevalent. Look for more standards such as ISO 4448-5 on how to operate outdoor AMRs, as well as more robots to make their way into our daily lives. Providers like Braincorp and Avidbot are bringing cleaning and scanning robots to

the grocery store — in public, but within the controlled space of the grocery store. Whether we start seeing more cleaning robots, security robots, and even room service delivery robots, as the public becomes more comfortable with robots, we will see a growing number of use cases and applications. Robots have become a need to have, not a nice to have. The pulse of Automate 2022 pointed toward some exciting growth within the warehouse and material handling space, continued and steady adoption on the manufacturing floor, and potentially some innovative solutions that touch the end customer. Keep an eye on this space, the rise of robots, the need for interoperability, and the digital layer that is vital to manage and optimize this technology. Business Management

Four ways that autonomous mobile robots are helping facilities

Warehouses, large retail stores, and airports around the globe are seeing more autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) being utilized to complete simple, everyday tasks, letting humans focus on activities that require their dexterity and decisionmaking abilities. 1. AMRs aren’t just saving time. They can save money. According to Robotics Business Review, the average worker wastes nearly seven weeks per year in unnecessary motion, which adds up to more than $4.3 billion in labor costs in the U.S. alone. With the use of AMRs, companies can save money by allowing employees to focus on business-critical jobs, reduce unnecessary motion and leave mundane tasks like floor cleaning to the robots. This not only eliminates employees juggling multiple jobs at once, but also ensures that the job is getting completed in full without being rushed. In addition to better allocation of workers' time, robotic solutions provide labor cost-efficiency benefits. For example, when evaluating a worker in charge of facility maintenance and cleaning, the hourly labor cost averages $22, and the yearly cost for that single employee is $44K+ per year. Combined with the endless labor cycle of recruitment, training, retention challenges, and rising labor costs, along with the need for increased cleaning, many organizations continue to shift from manual cleaning to autonomous solutions. 16

August 2022

Material Handling Network

www.MHNetwork.com

Cleaning robots also provide something that a manual solution can’t, which is the ability to monitor, manage, and measure what was cleaned, when it was cleaned, what wasn’t cleaned and why. Based on the average cost of an autonomous cleaning solution, most organizations will see a return on their investment within 12 - 18 months depending on how many hours they’re using the robot each day. Moreover, warehouse and facility managers don’t need to account for work breaks in the schedule with a cleaning robot, saving even more time and money! 2. Investing in AMRs can mean a safer work environment.

With a strapped labor market and a demanding economy, employees are stretched thin, stressed, and pressed for time, which increases the chance of errors and accidents on the job. Robots help create a safer work environment by alleviating some of these factors. For example, an employee that is in a rush while manually cleaning a facility may not clean every square inch or may end up driving too quickly leaving water on the floor, further increasing the risk for accidents. This wouldn’t be the case if an AMR was tasked with the cleaning. Dynamic path planning and real-time obstacle avoidance allow robotics to avoid anyone or anything, safely completing the task at hand. With fewer employees rushing to complete

Business Management continued

multiple tasks within a retail aisle, airport terminal, or warehouse floor, it allows the opportunity to decrease the number of potential accidents and safety risks. What does this mean for the company? The decreased safety risk leads to more uptime, fewer employee absences, lower risk of accidents, and, ultimately, additional financial savings. All of these factors contribute to higher efficiency and production. 3. Staying up to date with cleaning metrics through AMR data and analytics. Whether you are reviewing the cleaning report from the night before, completing a health and safety report to deliver to a department official, or updating your manager on how the facility is being cleaned — the answers lie within the data and analytics tools provided by AMRs. For example, through the Avidbots Command Center, Neo operators can manage and monitor a single robot or an entire fleet of robots in real-time from anywhere in the world, 24/7/365. Not only are operators able to identify cleaning plans that were successfully completed, but they can also pinpoint underperforming cleaning plans and make adjustments as needed for a more efficient clean on the very next cleaning run. This allows your team more time to focus on your core business, knowing the AMR is completing the task you’ve asked it to while documenting it along the way. 4. AMRs result in an increased level of flexibility and versatility for companies.

Facility managers around the world are putting in long hours to ensure that working environments are safe for employees. With many companies turning to AMRs for a more optimized clean, additional time can be spent on other tasks that require human decision-making and dexterity. Whether it’s business growth, a busier time of year, or seasonal changes, cleaning AMRs deliver a new era of flexibility and versatility. With dynamic

work facilities constantly fluctuating, it’s imperative that the cleaning AMRs selected to adjust their route on the fly as needed. To deliver even further cleaning plan customization, Avidbots and their Cleaning Plan Generation team offer an unlimited number of cleaning plans as needed for a variety of environments. As a result of custom cleaning plans, Neo delivers the best cleaning possible. Whether it is because of the positive impact on labor, data analytics and reporting, or versatility and efficiency, adoption of AMRs will continue to rise around the globe in industries of all kinds. The ongoing evolution of robotic technology continues to deliver efficient and effective solutions that drive tangible benefits to materials handling businesses. BSLBATT delivers over 200 Lithium Batteries to customers of a large Industrial Battery Distributor BSLBATT Battery has announced the completion of a huge deal with a major industrial forklift battery distributor. With its BSLBATT® modular technology, BSLBATT is powering material handling equipment for new centers spanning over 950,000 square feet. The company has ordered more than 205 counterbalance forklifts and Narrow Aisle Forklifts batteries since last year. In the long run, only one lithium-ion battery is required per device, compared to the usual two, if not three, lead-acid batteries. In addition to requiring a significant portion of the area to be used for lead-acid battery storage, this route would likely require 410-615 lead-acid batteries. The decision to choose a BSLBATT electric forklift lithium battery eliminated a lot of battery, storage, and maintenance. www.lithiumforkliftbattery.com 28

Let pedestrians and operators know if someone is just around the corner with our New LOOK-OUT ™

• Avoid Forklift Accidents • Alert Workers & Pedestrians • Warehouse, Yard and Office Applications • Reduce Liabilities • Increase Up Time

Alert Employees of Dangerous Collisions BEFORE They Occur! LOOK-OUT™

Currently, we have 42 standard package offerings, ranging from one-way to fourway intersections. These units can be mounted to racks, walls, or ceiling hung for the large units. Additionally, our new DUAL USE series consists of units that can be used INDOORS and OUTDOORS. Our units are Essential for Traffic Control.

Our LOOK OUT™ product line offers a versatile line of safety sensors that will alert workers and pedestrians if a forklift or other moving object is approaching just around the corner. Our sensors are great for any traffic area and are quickly becoming a standard for warehouse traffic control. Avoid accidents and potential liabilities to your facility. We have LOOK OUT™ products for just about every safety application for your warehouse, yard, or office needs. Additionally, if you need a custom solution, we will work with you to assure that your safety needs are met to complete satisfaction.

Protect your employees, visitors, and guests from dangerous collisions with forklifts or heavy equipment while walking through your facility. Safety and caution should be an automatic response to your implemented systems. We offer both interior and exterior sensors on our systems that can be mounted anywhere. They help control traffic concerns and communicate that someone is approaching from a spot that may not be otherwise visible.

When the sensors detect motion in blind spots around a corner or a door way, it begins to flash a warning to the pedestrian or operator who is approaching that intersection. Additionally, sensors will signal the lights on either side of the unit to flash as to indicate someone is approaching the same intersection. Thus, everyone approaching that intersection is informed of movement and will know to proceed with caution. The sensors may be adjusted to specific angles and lengths that will meet the needs of your facility. Signals are sent via bright flashing red LED lights on each visible side of the units.

AVOID DEADLY AND COSTLY FORKLIFT COLLISIONS As workers juggle more projects and deadlines with shorter time constraints, safety can become jeopardized. As this happens, so do accidents. 40% of all forklift fatalities are caused by an individual being struck or run over by a forklift. Many of these accidents and fatalities can be avoided by warning pedestrians and forklift operators of approaching danger. Our LOOK OUT™ sensor alert warning system allows for quick and easy recognition of possible hazardous situations. Why take chances of liabilities when you can avoid accidents and protect your most valuable assets: your employees!

Blind spots, corners, and dangerous intersections can cause series accidents. Wouldn’t it be great if someone was always there to alert you of oncoming traffic? Despite Safety Supervisors efforts, they cannot always be there to prevent collisions. Thankfully, our units are there to scan traffic areas and alert 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • The Look Out units cover 2, 3, and 4-way intersections. • The Hall Door and Overhead Door units cover hallways and overhead doors. • The Basics detect on one side and alert on the other. • The Dual Use series of units can be used for interior/exterior applications. Examples of these units are shown below. LOOK OUT 4
