SAFETY CORNER

The Truth About Training Forklift Trainers OSHA requires that all employers certify their forklift operators. Companies typically conduct forklift training in-house or subcontract it out to a forklift training supplier. For the purposes of this article, we will be looking at those who chose the in-house approach to forklift training. Just like buying a used car can be a dicey proposition, so can finding a provider to train your forklift trainers. OSHA 29CFR1910.178 (l) (2) (iii) states “All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence.” Even with this notice in place, there are still some companies selling forklift trainer materials or offering online training that promote the following claims: P Become a forklift trainer in 1 hour! P No prerequisites or past experience required. P Do it fast and easy online, no human contact is required. P Anyone can be a trainer! Interesting, right? What if we applied the same criteria to other industries? “Become an airline pilot today, don’t waste years in flight school, just buy our materials or log in and get your pilot’s license in one day!” Or this example: “Become a surgeon now, why spend 8 years of your life in college? Buy our materials or log in today and become a surgeon in only one month, with no prior experience required!” We laugh at those analogies because we would NEVER fall for those types of fly-by-night schemes, and we understand how dangerous they could be. Even though we recognize these as pretty radical claims, many forklift train the trainer options continue to advertise in this fashion. Here are some suggestions for companies who are considering training forklift trainers: 1. Pick the right forklift trainer candidates. Contrary to popular belief, not every person would make a great forklift trainer. If you don’t have the right type of trainer candidates in-house or they don’t have 8

the time to train your people, then you would be better to outsource your training. We have found that the most successful forklift trainer candidates should possess the following skills: • Forklift trainer candidates should have a good safety record • Good communication • Solid forklift operation skills • Computer literate • Patience • Understands the job site and forklifts being used. The quality of your forklift operators and your forklift training program will be a direct correlation to the quality of your forklift trainers. Short cutting the training of your forklift trainers puts your whole forklift safety program in jeopardy. 2. Pick the right training supplier. I think we can dismiss just buying a forklift trainer’s kit or online forklift trainer training as valid options, but many of the other solutions on the market are only slightly better. Here are some things to look for when picking a vendor to train your forklift trainers. Pick a class that takes the time to do it right; one day is too short, it takes a day to train forklift operators, let alone trainers, which will have a higher level of responsibility and liability. Watch out for classes that “bait and switch” meaning you find out once you are already in the class that the materials which you need to train cost more than the class itself. OSHA says nothing about forklift trainers needing to be re-evaluated, like they do with forklift operators; watch out for programs which try and extract money out of you every three years. It should be your call when and if to return for more training. Lastly, how is the support after the sale? Will you continue to get your questions answered and be kept up to date on what is happening in the forklift safety world or will you be on your own to fend for yourself? 3. Uniformity in the training of forklift trainers is critical, especially for large companies with multiple sites across the country. It is rare to find corpo-

SAFETY CORNER rations which have a uniform approach to how forklift training is conducted, how the forklift trainers are trained and what materials they are using. For example, if the Ohio site uses the local Mitsubishi dealer, the Arizona site uses a safety consultant, and the New Jersey site does it all in-house, the chances they have any uniformity among the sites are zero. Finding a vendor with a national reach that can train forklift trainers anywhere in the US is important, but not easy to find. 4. Find a supplier who can help you identify forklift safety hazards in your workplace, so your business can make changes. Identifying and fixing forklift and pedestrian safety hazards that have existed for decades is not an easy thing. When a training provider comes to your site to train forklift trainers, they should look things over and make recommendations. Alternatively, if you send your trainers to their training site, they should be instructing your trainers about identifying common hazards.

10

Not long ago, we surveyed a customer site and found they had the following issues: 1. Operators not wearing seatbelts on sit-downs 2. Stand-ups lacked rear posts 3. Several sets of forks were worn out at the heel 4. Battery compartment latches were broken 5. Attachments were not listed on the data plate 6. Exits were blocked with pallets 7. PPE was not in good condition and being used 8. Flatbed truck drivers were allowed too close to the action when being loaded. It would have been easy to just provide a forklift trainer’s class, but it was worthwhile helping the end user find and fix hazards they weren’t previously aware of. FEATURE STORY

AI in 2019: Start small, win big customer in Northern Europe. As a household brand, they used an AI demand planning solution to forecast projected consumption in their sector. The accuracy of their forecast before and after the AI solution was eye opening. The demand planning forecast produced by the AI solution proved far, far closer to real market results. And forecast demand planning proved an excellent choice of application. For this business, a concrete, achievable target meant concrete, measurable results.

A new generation of point AI solutions will prove themselves in 2019. They’ll build new trust, urgency and understanding of what ‘AI’ actually is, and just how much it can deliver. Voice-driven solutions will lead the charge. And we’ll see pick-and-place robots in smart warehouses delivering a major competitive edge, as companies advance their use of Robotic Process Automation. Here are my 3 key predictions for manufacturing for 2019—and beyond. Prediction #1: 50% of all manufacturing companies will be using AI in some form by the end of 2021 Make no mistake, the implementation of AI solutions will change everything. And I mean everything. Every industry, business, process and company. But let’s not forget: For many businesses, targeted AI solutions are already here! They’re already delivering a competitive edge. 2019 will be all about that new AI realism spreading, with new targeted, project-based AI solutions hitting the ground running. ‘ AI’: Small solutions win big A big stumbling block for AI has always been the term ‘AI’ itself. It misleads many manufacturers, suggesting a large end-to-end system. In reality, ‘AI’ is a collection of targeted technologies, from natural language processing to vision identification to chatbots to analytics to automation—each with its own strengths and applications. What they all share is the intelligence factor: a high degree of accuracy and an incredibly fast, smart ability to learn from their mistakes. I saw that accuracy myself recently with an IFS 12

AI solutions are precision tools, not blunt instruments When thinking of AI, we need to remember that you can’t “implement AI” any more than you can “implement the internet”. Before you initiate any project, you must figure out your ‘why’. What exact business goal and target are you aiming at? What exactly do you want to improve and enhance? The more targeted your objectives, the more competitive and transformative your results. rediction #2: 25% of manufacturing planners will P be talking to their systems by the end of 2020 AI solutions are smarter and more eloquent than most of us realize. A year ago, a major AI customer survey found that two thirds of people who said they had never used AI actually had, through chatbots. The quality was so high that the chatbots had been indistinguishable from human speech. The same survey found 84% of respondents were comfortable using voice-activated AI at home, in the form of Alexa, Siri or Home. And if simplicity, speed and accuracy are crucial consumer benefits, imagine what they could do on a manufacturing line. BMW’s smart integration of Alexa into its models in March 2018 was widely applauded. And rightly so. The integrated voice activation went way beyond skin deep, adding layers of service and performance capability to the whole driving experience. What’s less well-known is that voice-activated solutions are also already being used on the production side of the automotive sector. In Japan, one of our customers, NEC, are already using voice-activated solutions in their order picking process, where line personnel simply give spoken instructions and their order is instantly created. Which moves us swiftly on to…

FEATURE STORY rediction #3: Pick-and-place robots will put away P 25% of manufactured goods by the end of 2020 Robots on the production line have been essential for decades. But what kind of savings and competitive edge will AI-enabled robots in the warehouse deliver? When Amazon made the headlines recently with their smart warehouses staffed with swift, inexhaustible robots, it became clear that robots raised the performance and savings bar hugely. With no eyes or flesh, robots do not need lighting or heating, so energy costs plummet. There are no time or weight limits on breaks, shifts or loads. And the flexibility, fluency, reach and economy of robot-driven picking and placing means no wasted time or effort—and far better utilization of space. 24-hour, black-box warehouses will be able to store and do more, without having to get bigger. And as it is with AI so it is with robots. It’s already happening—with small, targeted use cases that will keep growing bigger. An example: we are currently working with one of our customers in North America to extend their use of robotics from loading boxes to complete material handling. For our customer, it’s another small

step on their longer journey to digital transformation. So full lights-out warehouses may be some years away. But it has begun. At IFS we’re already seeing innovative partner companies beginning work with automated warehouses: Heavy parts that may once have required a team of workers can now be plucked off the shelf by one robot with no wasted effort, no wasted time and no additional costs. 2019 will see the technologies in all these predictions gaining traction in the world of business. They will become more targeted and more project-driven. More focused on achieving small, concrete improvements results that will lead on to big change. For many companies, 2019 will be the year when they realize that actually, they don’t need to ‘climb an AI mountain’. They just have to keep taking the right, small steps. Do that, and they will still be able to reach new heights. Author: Antony Bourne, IFS Global Industry Director for Manufacturing. Inquiries should be sent to networkeditorial@wcinet.com.

Break the Too Tired Cycle We all feel tired from time to time. Sometimes it’s for obvious reasons, such as too many late nights or long hours spent at work. However, tiredness that goes on for a long time isn’t normal and can affect your ability to enjoy your life. A constant feeling of fatigue is emotionally, psychologically and physically draining and can negatively impact your relationships both at home and at work. The good news is you can make some simple changes to your daily routine to successfully combat the feeling of being too tired. Below are six common factors that may contribute to your lack of energy and some simple changes you can make to help you wake up. Lack of Exercise The average person watches 33 hours of TV per week. However, the main excuse for not exercising is that there is not enough time. Take some time away from technology including TV, smartphones and computers, and get moving. The more a

person moves, the more blood is circulated throughout the body. This increased blood flow helps give you energy and improves you mental wellbeing. For the convenience of employees, our on-site, 10,000 square foot gym the TVH Nudge Center offers a variety of different exercise equipment options and easy access to over 700 exercise videos. Other remote locations also have a Nudge Centers, on-site classes and all employees can receive Health Club and activity reimbursements for races and tournaments. Lack of Sleep One in three people aren’t getting enough sleep each night. Extended sleep deprivation not only contributes to a feeling of exhaustion, but also elevates your risk of getting sick and increase weight. For the best benefits for your health and wellbeing, make an effort to get seven or more hours of sleep a night. Unhealthy Diet Your diet has a huge impact on the way you feel. A poor diet lacking in nutrients will leave you drained and fatigued. Read food labels. Sugar and high processed foods will cause a roller coaster of highs and lows in blood sugar, thus decreased energy levels. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they cause havoc on your sleeping habits. TVH’s new on-site restaurant, The Daily Pallet, provides a fresh salad bar and healthy daily meals choices for our employees to enjoy. TVH also offers nutrition and healthy lifestyle classes for all employees. Lack of H2O Water is second only to oxygen for life. Dehydration impacts energy levels and dramatically impacts all of the organs in the body including the brain. Set a goal to drink eight, 8-ounce glasses a day. Also cut out drinks high in caffeine. Too much caffeine keeps the body in a high degree of alertness, even to the point of being tense. Try replacing your normal cup of coffee or soda with water instead. Stress Stress is inevitable; however, how one reacts to it makes all the difference. Be aware of your stress triggers. Knowing what causes you stress can help you formulate ways to respond to it in a healthy manner. It’s important to create a positive work/life balance. TVH’s Health and Wellness (TVH Nudge) program offers employees bi-monthly meditation classes, as well as access to an on-site meditation room.

TVH HEALTH NUDGE Medical Conditions While there are ways to combat a feeling of fatigue there are serious medical conditions that may be at work. Please consult your physician if you think you have any of these medical conditions listed below. • Anemia: Anemic patients have a low red blood cell count which impairs the normal circulation of oxygen throughout the body. Common symptoms include fatigue and loss of energy as well as rapid heart beat and shortness of breath. • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS): CFS, is characterized by extreme fatigue that lasts at least 4 months. Sufferers often report other symptoms such as joint pain, aching muscles, and gastrointestinal difficulties. • Depression: A lack of energy and decrease in general motivation are among the most common symptoms of depression, along with difficulty concentrating and a pervasive feeling of emptiness or sadness. • Diabetes: A person with diabetes will frequently feel tired because their body is unable to utilize glucose, one of the body’s primary sources of energy. Aside from tiredness, the symptoms include excessive thirst, blurred vision, and weight loss.

• Sleep apnea: This condition causes the airway to narrow during sleep, which interrupts a person’s breathing and oxygen supply. The classic sign of sleep apnea is disrupted sleep that causes tiredness the next day. Snoring is a common indicator of this condition. • Thyroid disease: Low levels of thyroid hormone (“hypothyroidism”) result in fatigue, weakness, weight gain, a low body temperature and constipation. This is because the thyroid hormone is responsible for regulating the body’s metabolism. An imbalance triggers a cascade of physical and psychological symptoms. In order to meet the medical needs of our employees and their immediate family members, TVH offers an on-site health clinic that helps with preventative and nonpreventative care. Decide to make changes today and give yourself the best support you can to improve your well-being and stop feeling tired all the time. The TVH Nudge program mantra, daily choices matter, is an on-going reminder to think about living wellness every day. If you would like to know more about TVH and the Nudge Health and Wellness programs, contact Lucy DelSarto, Health & Wellness Coach for TVH Americas, at lucy.delsarto@tvh.com.

Alarm Bar to protect overhead assets

The Alarm Bar is made from A-Safe’s Memaplex material, the company’s patented blend of eight materials and rubber additives that, practically, absorbs impact without incurring damage. The bar is just over 6ft long (78 ¾ in) and has a diameter of 5⅛ in. These are standard dimensions, although bespoke systems are available if ordered in bulk. The lightweight, 28-lb. Alarm Bar is easily installed, hung from two thin cables towards either end. The product is self-powered, with 12-volt battery life providing more than two years of constant power. Audio and visual alarms alert the operator of contact. www.asafe.com

Camso expands its non-marking antistatic line-up

The addition of the Solideal RES Xtreme NMAS to Camso’s portfolio makes it the first tire manufacturer to offer a complete range of solid non-marking anti-static (NMAS) forklift tires, now supplying both press-on and resilient solutions. “The Solideal PON 775 NMAS received an unprecedented welcome in the market. Customers were finally getting an extreme performance non-marking tire that also prevents static electricity build-up,” says Thierry Miche, Product Line Executive Director – Material Handling, at Camso. “As the global leader in the industry, we had to develop a resilient NMAS tire to answer customers’ needs around the world.” www.camso.co

Self-propelled platform truck-tug

Air Technical Industries (ATI) announces the development of an exciting new heavy duty selfpropelled platform truck-tug. The propulsion is battery powered 24 volt DC and controls are built-in below the platform which can open at one end for service access. The self-propulsion with added features of tug or pulling eliminates the need for the more expensive fork truck. The great benefit of the new platform truck-tug is that it carries a load and pulls other trailers along. The feature of 60° steering to each side allows for sharp angle turns to operate in narrow isles or crowded areas.

Pumped-up industrialized caster

Aimed at delivering the strength of titans, TWERGO MAXX is designed to move up to 4,200 pounds without the user breaking a sweat or throwing out a back. The new member of the TWERGO line of heavy-duty casters looks like a barbell, with wheels on either side of the rig. Its unique configuration enables the casters to rotate independently, minimizing rolling resistance. For employees tasked with moving large loads of materials, TWERGO MAXX alleviates the risk of injury by reducing the amount of force needed to push and pull. Injuries associated with overexertion, such as pushing and pulling heavy materials, are the most common workplace injury in the U.S. www.casterconcepts.com

A-Safe launches TrailerKerb for loading flatbeds at the dock

TrailerKerb fills a gap in the U.S. market for a product that enhances safety where loading of flatbed trailers is required from a dock. As Paul Barlow, CEO at A-Safe Inc., explained, construction materials, for example, are commonly loaded from a dock, but as typical sites don’t have such docks, product must be shipped on flatbed trailers to facilitate unloading by telehandlers or other equipment. There are inherent hazards associated with operating forklifts on flatbed transportation without sides or means of protective guarding.

INDUSTRY NEWS

2019 U.S. Economic Outlook Q3 Update Forecasts 3.9% Expansion in Equipment and Software Investment and 2.5% GDP Growth After two consecutive years of solid growth, equipment and software investment growth is likely to slow in 2019 to 3.9 percent (down from 4.5 percent in the Q2 update of the Economic Outlook published in April), according to the Q3 update to the 2019 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released today by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. Business conditions for the equipment finance industry softened in the first half of the year as the U.S manufacturing sector weakened, and investment growth in several key verticals is expected to slow or contract in the second half of 2019. Jeffry D. Elliott, Foundation Chairman and Senior Managing Director of Huntington Equipment Finance, said, “Consumer confidence has eased this year while consumer spending has moderated. Large businesses are showing signs of pulling back, though small businesses remain upbeat. In light of stronger-than-expected growth in Q1, the economy is expected to grow 2.5 percent in 2019, up from the previous estimate of 2.2 percent.” Highlights from the report include: • Capital spending slowed in the beginning of 2019, consistent with declining macroeconomic fundamentals. Business investment faces further downside risk if the industrial sector continues to fade, and trade relations remain turbulent. Although banks continue to tighten lending standards to consumers amid waning credit demand among businesses and consumers, overall credit market conditions remain mostly healthy. Financial stress remains relatively low by historical standards, though both delinquencies and charge-offs are on the rise. • After achieving 2.9 percent growth in 2018 — tied with 2015 for the strongest year of growth of the current business cycle — the U.S. economy expanded at a healthy 3.1% pace in the first quarter, exceeding expectations. However, trade frictions are undoubtedly contributing to the softness in the U.S. manufacturing sector, which continued to struggle in Q2 and does not appear to be on the verge of a rebound. • Though domestic oil production has been a key bright spot for the U.S. economy and the increasingly dovish Federal Reserve has helped buoy financial markets, there are several risk factors that merit close attention for the rest of the year. Risks include the efficacy of China’s efforts to stimulate its economy, the divergence between small- and big-business optimism, and the potential for a protracted slowdown in consumer 24

spending later this year. The Foundation-Keybridge U.S. Equipment & Software Investment Momentum Monitor, which is included in the report, tracks 12 equipment and software investment verticals. In addition, the “Momentum Monitor Sector Matrix” provides a customized data visualization of current values of each of the 12 verticals based on recent momentum and historical strength. Several equipment verticals should expect their growth outlook to remain steady in the second half of 2019. Over the next three to six months: • Agricultural machinery investment growth is likely to remain modestly positive; • Construction machinery investment growth is likely to weaken further and potentially stall; • Materials handling equipment investment growth is likely to weaken and may turn negative; • All other industrial equipment investment growth will likely weaken and may stall; • Medical equipment investment should grow at a moderate pace ; • Mining and oilfield machinery investment growth is likely to remain steady; • Aircraft investment growth is likely to remain negative; • Ships and boats investment growth may remain sluggish and may stall; • Railroad equipment investment growth is unlikely to improve and may worsen; • Trucks investment is expected to grow moderately; • Computers investment growth will likely continue to weaken, potentially into negative territory; and • Software investment growth should remain solid. The Foundation produces the Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook report in partnership with economic and public policy consulting firm Keybridge Research. The economic forecast provides a three-to-six-month outlook for industry investment with data, including a summary of investment trends in key equipment markets, credit market conditions, the U.S. macroeconomic outlook, and key economic indicators. The Q3 report is the second update to the 2019 Economic Outlook and will be followed by one final quarterly update before the publication of the 2020 Economic Outlook in December.
