ishbourne Quay is a mixed use development on the north shore of the Isle of Wight, comprising a new detached property, new light industrial units and a marina. The site is located at the mouth of a natural river inlet with a very scenic shoreline comprised of houses dispersed within mature trees.

The house is designed to allow open daily living, out into the waterside in good weather with a more contained bedroom wing separated from the living area by a two storey atrium containing stairs and a gallery. The house is designed to be easy to use, allow for use of a wide range of boats and activities on the river/sea and a small palette of materials has been used

simply and with consistent and coherent detailing. The project involved extensive landscaping and replanting of the site to create a wooded foreshore typical of the creek and to enhance the already abundant flora and fauna.

The house is designed to allow open daily living out into the waterside in good weather with a more contained bedroom wing separated from the living area by a two storey atrium containing stairs and a gallery.

Ground Floor Plan The house has been built on top of the original slab from one of the old industrial buildings. This reduced the amount of spoil going to landfill and could be used as an in-situ piling mat and form work for ground beams on top of the piles. Block work then created an undercroft / basement against which two metres plus of fill and soil was placed to form the new ground floor level. Air source heat pumps have been used (ground source were not appropriate because of the ground conditions) and these heat both the house, under floor heating, hot water and pool heating. The house is orientated to reduce solar gain except in the late afternoon. Intermittent use makes energy use difficult to ascertain.

The site is located at the mouth of a natural river inlet with a very scenic shoreline comprised of houses dispersed within mature trees.

Efficient structural stabilisation enables adjacent demolition to proceed A growing use for Helifix masonry reinforcement systems is to stabilise existing buildings during a new construction phase or a significant restoration, enabling major structural works to be undertaken safely and cost-effectively. Some of the more common requirements are: to allow the removal and replacement of significant structural elements; to reinforce against heavy drilling or piling vibrations; to enable the creation of new openings and reduce the loadings on other elements; to open up work space by reducing or eliminating the need for traditional temporary mechanical props; to reinforce party walls during demolition and development of neighbouring properties. A recent project in Williamson Square, Liverpool, is a good example of the last application. Helifix engineers design solutions that quickly, easily and economically overcome difficult temporary situations which could otherwise prove dangerous, time consuming and costly to planned developments. UK’s Top Manufacturers And Producers Of Expanded Polystyrene Adopt New Europe-wide airpop* Brand

The British Plastic Federation members supplying EPS to industries ranging from construction and civil engineering to packaging and insulation, have adopted ‘airpop – engineered air’ as the new Europe-wide name for EPS. This change now replaces many names previously used across Europe including Styropor, PSE, Piepschuim and Polyfoam bringing a common European name for the material. David Emes, Chairman of the BPF EPS group said, “Airpop has been chosen because the name immediately brings to mind what the material is made of – air. In fact 98 % air, to be precise. This remarkable material is used as a lightweight, high-impact, highly-efficient insulating material in construction and civil engineering as well as in products protecting thousands of items used in our daily lives.”

Further information about the new name is available at www.airpop.com

Solardome crowned Green Champions Hampshire based Solardome Industries has won a top environmental award from The Green Organisation at its Green Apple Awards at a glittering ceremony at London’s futuristic venue, known as The Crystal. The Southampton firm was crowned Green Champion 2014 in the Built Environment Construction Category for an eco-home project involving its new SOLARDOME PRO system. The panel of Judges heard how the PRO system was developed for an eco-home in Norway where a 15 meter glass and aluminium dome was projected over a sustainably built COB house made from wood and straw. The design not only protected the property from wild arctic winds and severe snowfalls, but also drastically reduced energy consumption and building maintenance whilst regulating the climate to create a Southern European-style garden. Welsh Coastal Hotel Relies on Armstrong Service to Keep It’s Laundry Running The beautiful Trefeddian Hotel at Aberdovey in Wales has a very apt slogan ‘Where the Mountains meets the Sea’. With endless local activities including golf, cycling and rambling it is busy all through the year. William Moeran, the hotel’s general manager, has been dealing with Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems for many years, and he says of the company, “The main reason we deal with Armstrong is that the after sales service is at least as good as their advice on new equipment, and the equipment itself. Being so remote, if we need a spare part or if something isn’t working quite right, getting an engineer here quickly can be a problem. But with Armstrong, our own maintenance people can get on the phone to their technical team who will talk them through exactly what to look for and what to do, and if a spare part is needed it will arrive in the post next day!” For further information Tel: 01635 263410 Or visit: www.armstrong-laundry.co.uk

Eco Barrier

The sustainable noise barrier Installation of the basic frame

Ecological noise barriers that offer effective protection against noise pollution or nuisance while also contributing positively to protecting the environment. These are barriers that blend harmoniously into the natural environment and become more attractive as the greenery grows with every year that passes. This plant growth also helps to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. The extensive green wall from Gramm, called the Eco barrier, is the absolute ‘top of the tree’ when it comes to green noise barriers. A screen of living green is a structure that is able to save space and grow to full size without the need for any artificial edifice, thanks to natural precipitation.

Eco barrier with coconut fibre as foundations layer

The noise barrier is composed of just three components: 1) Framework trellis profiles 2) Outer mats 3) Vertical supports These individual components are put together on site without any bolts and/or welding. This guarantees a “zero failure” system upon assembly. The choice of covering options include: 1) Coconut fibre 2) Green fleece fibre

Advantages:

• No foundations required! • No need to remove spoil from site as it can be used in the construction of the barrier • Life span 50-75 years! • Product has been tested to 67dB “Highly Absorbent” on both sides • Low maintenance costs • Graffiti resistant • No requirement for any supplementary provisions in terms of irrigation installations • Long life durability • EU patented • Highly absorbent • Excellent insulator • Adds to the quality of the environment with greenery and CO2 reduction • Responsible landscaping • Green and completely recyclable • No expense of providing foundations thanks to their natural stability • Costs savings due to the reusing of existing barriers thereby reducing transport and removal costs as well as reducing CO2 emissions • Supplementary applications include for example solar panels, which are also possible options

Anti Slip Floor Treatment SHANGRI-LA at THE SHARD, LONDON At the newly opened Shangri-la Hotel in London, all the marble shower floors have been treated by SLIPSTOP.

F

or over 30 years SLIPSTOP, based at Coalville in Leicestershire has been helping to prevent slips and accidents in industry, commerce, leisure and even on luxurious cruise liners. Now the company is campaigning to prevent slippery ceramic tiled floors from being replaced in an effort to help the environment. Hundreds of thousands of square metres of flooring have already been treated by the company to make them anti-slip, thus preventing thousands of accidents to staff and members of the public. Slippery floors are the largest single cause of accidents and cost millions of pounds in claims every year. Yet many millions more are spent in replacing shiny glazed ceramic and porcelain floors when all that is required is a specialised application by SLIPSTOP. Technical Director Terje Brodahl explained: “Building owners, architects and specifiers are replacing thousands of square metres

of ceramic and porcelain floor tiles throughout the UK just because they present a slip problem. Tiles are very durable and offer many qualities not found in other materials. Even so, old tiles are often replaced with inferior products, just because they have become slippery. We have a treatment that is quick, safe and extremely economical as well as being eco-friendly. Our anti-slip treatments eliminate accidents at a fraction of the cost of replacement”. “Effective under dry, wet and even greasy conditions, the SLIPSTOP process, that is guaranteed for five years, also removes most stains and calcium deposits and is approved by the Health and Safety Executive. It is good to see more and more architects and building owners choosing treatment before replacement,” he added. Don’t be too sure about your insurer! SLIPSTOP was recently called in by a company that had to

pay out tens of thousands of pounds for a slip accident, as its own insurance company refused to pay compensation because the problem had been highlighted in a previous Health and Safety Audit. SLIPSTOP was able to make the floor safe for less than £2,000 and since the treatment was carried out there has not been one single accident. Sarah Hannah, Sales Manager for SLIPSTOP, explained: ‘The situation with this company proves yet again that prevention is better than cure. We want to raise the level of awareness amongst companies.’ ‘What we offer is a permanent solution to most types of slippery floors. One single application is guaranteed for five years and the product is even environmentally friendly. It creates a microstructure on the floor’s surface leaving it safe even when wet or oily. For more information contact SLIPSTOP on 01530 813500 or e-mail at info@slipstop.co.uk

Granite Transformations Refaces Linda’s Reclaimed Slate Worktop

Beko plc announced its significant investment into the growing Housebuilder market in the UK, with the introduction of its dedicated specialist contract market team as part of a new four brand strategy – Grundig, Leisure, Beko and Blomberg. Led by Murat Sapci, the diverse and experienced team is committed to ensuring that Beko plc delivers the best possible service to contractors across all four Beko plc brands. The company offers a range of two, three and five year warranties as standard across its ranges, ensuring that house builders can leave a property with the peace of mind that they have delivered quality and after care for the buyer.”

Interior designer Linda Barker was instrumental in reawakening the public’s interest in home makeovers with the BBC television show ‘Changing Rooms’, and other Tv shows to become one of the country’s best known designers. With all that makeover know-how, when she wanted to replace the reclaimed slate worktop in her South London home with ‘something bullet proof’, Linda called in Granite Transformations. She was already familiar with their agglomerate work surfaces and realised that they would be the perfect makeover solution.. Linda opted for Granite Transformations’ Nero Galaxy finish, which has the classic looks of black granite, yet is made using post-industrial recycled content from quarrying processes, in line with her environmental concerns.

Impey Showers, the UK’s leading wetroom specialist has completed a unique wetroom installation at Forde Abbey, a Grade One listed building located in Dorset. Impey has dispelled the myth that contemporary design solutions for modern lifestyles can’t be incorporated into older properties by installing one of its wetrooms in an almost ‘impossible’ location; a disused lift shaft in a 900year-old house. A new wetroom was created within the space of a disused lift shaft using a number of Impey’s innovative, leak-free wetroom solutions. Impey’s Waterguard was chosen for this project to tank the wet-floor area because it guarantees a leak free solution which is crucial in a setting like Forde Abbey where original features and antique ceilings would be impossible to replace if damaged. Impey Waterguard is the next generation in wetroom waterproofing systems ensuring a faster & easier method to applying the membrane.

5 Tips for Making Small Bathrooms Feel Big When you’re limited for space in your bathroom, it can feel impossible to fit everything in, but you can still conjure up elegant, yet functional space.

B

athrooms (even the smallest ones) have the potential to be superb, modern rooms. Some simple design tricks, suitable furniture choices and the right accessories can create your ideal space. Get rid of the clutter Toiletries, bottles, children’s toys and ornaments all make small spaces feel even smaller. Store all of these things away – out of sight in a cabinet somewhere. It will have an immediate impact. Limit yourself to a few choice things which complement each other, and your bathroom. Place them somewhere visible, but out of the way e.g. a window ledge or on a shelf.

Get rid of the clutter A wall cabinet, like this Odessa Wenge unit, will help with your declutter Keep the designs to a minimum The same logic behind de-cluttering your bathroom applies to the designs you should choose to use. A small bathroom is best suited to simple, clean lines, limited designs and contemporary features, so hold yourself back from complicated patterning or art work and go for a simple finish, such as natural stone tiles on the walls and floor.

Keep the designs to a minimum Simple clean lines are a major feature of furniture like the Sienna White Range

Let there be light Light levels probably influence people’s perception of space more than anything else. Sunlight reflecting off walls and surfaces creates the impression that a room is bigger than it otherwise seems to be. You can take advantage of that fact by using every opportunity to have big windows or a skylight in your bathroom. But even if natural light isn’t able to reach your bathroom, there are ways to use light to show off the space. Once you’ve got light into the room, you want to let it bounce around as much as possible! Use clear glass shower screens instead of frosted glass or shower curtains. And remember, mirrors are your friend.

Let there be light Choose a Spacesaver Enclosure with clear glass, to optimise both space and light Take it easy on the colours The simple fact is that light shades (white, cream etc.) light up small rooms, making them feel bigger. So when you’re choosing paint colours or picking out tiles remember: lighter is better! If you honestly cannot do without colour, you can use coloured mosaic tiles to set a colour scheme, and then use colour coordinated things like towels and bottles to tie the room together.

Take it easy on the colours Glass & Metal Mosaic Tiles can help add light & sparkle Storage is your friend A wall hung unit with basin, such as this Odessa Oak model, is the smarter way to stow your toiletries!

Storage is your friend There’s a huge variety of bathroom furniture available which has been designed for extra storage space with smaller bathrooms in mind. Corner basins and units can be ideal ways to increase your storage capacity without intruding too much into your bathroom. Another tip: Raising your bathroom furniture off the floor creates the illusion of more floor space, so going for wall-mounted basin could be an ideal way to maintain the illusion of a bigger bathroom. If you’re looking for more ways optimise your bathroom space, you’ll find loads of inspiration on Victoria Plumb’s Love Bathrooms site.

It replaces a 2-storey disused electrical substation and adjoins a locally listed former public house. It is designed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 and includes a green roof and photo-voltaic panels. Due to the sensitive context, early discussions with Islington Planning Authority established that any proposal for the site needed to positively respond to the volume and materials of its neighbours. It was also important that the design enhanced the urban realm and filled the gap in the streetscape created

by the receding stepped form of the substation and its separation from the adjacent building. 63 Compton fills the full width of the site between the former public house and Compton Passage, a narrow pedestrian route to the east, and is built hard-up to the street edge. It reads as a three storey building on the street, aligning with the adjacent building parapet. A fourth storey is set back from the street, concealed behind the brick parapet and creating a generous terrace to the top floor apartment with views to the mature London Plane trees opposite. At the rear the building is set back from the site boundary by two metres to create space for a ground floor terrace and large south facing balconies to the upper floor

apartments. Four generously proportioned lateral apartments are created, varying in size from 95m² to 120m² with the benefit of only one apartment per floor and with each of the upper floors having its own private lift access. The ground level apartment utilises the 3.6m floor to soffit height and street front lower ground floor area of the former substation building to create three interconnecting levels of space. These include a main ground floor level comprising the living room, bedroom and two bathrooms set back from the street and opening onto a terrace at the rear; a kitchen/family room at lower ground floor adjacent to the street; and a second bedroom on the street side raised by one

Due to the sensitive context, early discussions with Islington Planning Authority established that any proposal for the site needed to positively respond to the volume and materials of its neighbours.

metre to provide privacy along with a layer of translucent glazing. The building footprint is highly efficient with a shared access stair and lift in the north east corner entered from Compton Street. Each apartment comprises a dual aspect open plan living/dining/ kitchen space, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The second floor apartment includes a large sliding door panel in the living room to create a flexible third bedroom/study. Within each apartment the use of an innovative domestic auto-mist sprinkler system has enabled the omission of traditional corridors and thereby provides maximum useable space. The system also allows arrival into the 18 metre long open plan living/dining/kitchen spaces

directly from the private lift lobbies. The bedrooms and bathrooms are located on the more private western side of the apartments away from the lift and stair core and are carefully configured to create flexibility in the second bedroom arrangement, which can function either with an en-suite shower room or not as desired by the residents. The building is constructed of insitu concrete and internally this is left exposed, with its deliberately robust character contrasted with a more refined palette of solid oak floors, Calacatta Oro marble and two warm grey tones of paint applied to plasterwork and joinery. South Elevation Externally a high quality blue/red/ silver glazed Janinhoff brick is used that

reflects the general character of the context whilst also expressing the building as a new, crisp and contemporary contribution to the streetscape. The blue and red colouring responds to both the surrounding red brick Victorian buildings as well as the blue engineering brick and dark blue/grey painted buildings prevalent in Clerkenwell. The addition of silver in the colouring and the glazed finish provides a richness to the elevations, with the colours and reflectivity constantly changing with the light and weather. The sharp edged quality of the selected brick emphasises the contemporary design of the building and, along with the use of dark grey recessed mortar joints, creates a rich and varied texture.

All three elevations of the building are important to their immediate context with all sides visible from the public realm. For this reason the Janinhoff brick is used throughout, the detailing of which is then manipulated in response to the specific location – the street; the passageway with apartment windows immediately opposite; and the rear podium level garden. On Compton Street, the elevational composition responds to the vertical proportion of the fenestration typical in the area and deep reveals provide articulation and shadow. The shift in scale to the large glass corner element and recessed brick plane folding around the building defines the termination of the terrace of buildings at Compton Passage. This larger order also acknowledges the shared nature of the common stair within, which is lit through translucent glass maintaining the resident’s privacy. The side elevation is composed as a simple, flush plane in response to the narrowness of Compton Passage. This elevation has no windows to maintain the privacy of the residential building on the opposite side of Compton Passage and at third floor level the building volume is cut back towards the rear of the site to maintain daylight levels. The acute angle sunlight striking the building along the passage particularly enriches the colour, texture and reflective qualities of the brickwork. At the rear, the building is ordered with windows and doors articulated as crisp edged openings set deep into the brickwork. The form also reads in association with applied south facing steel plate balconies that step across the elevation and which create a constantly shifting pattern of light and shadow.

State-of-the-art Hopewood Park sets new benchmarks for quality and long term value in modern mental health accommodation using Dura Cladding, composite timber cladding

Deciding on a look for a new build or renovation can be a seriously stressful experience for the end client, whether they be a self builder or a multi-national organisation. Many wrestle with the dilemma of using modern materials for a sleek and fresh look or the use traditional materials such as wood. Whilst natural wood cladding represents a sizeable chunk of the wall cladding and façade market place, it is an area that must be fully understood if you are to achieve the look you want for a long period of time. That is because most timber cladding will fade significantly and begin to rot over time unless it is treated with the appropriate paint or stain at regular intervals. An alternative to using natural timber comes in the form of composite timber cladding. That is where natural wood flour is used within a composite mix to create a material that is more suited to battling the elements over an extended life cycle in all weather conditions. Dura Cladding is the leading product on the market where selected recycled wood and recycled high density polyethylene is used to create a cladding plank that offers the natural appearance of wood cladding but without the hassle or expense of periodic maintenance to preserve the wood. Hopewood Park, a new 137-bed purpose-built mental health hospital, was completed in June 2014 at Ryhope, Sunderland. It has been designed to provide modern and inspiring facilities for local mental health services by Medical Architecture, who utilised Dura Composites’ Dura Cladding as a major design element. The design idea was to use a cladding material commensurate with the state-of-the-art design brief but yet would be ‘at one’ with nature. Natural wood cladding is the obvious choice but this would require significant maintenance and its appearance would change significantly over time as the wood weathers.

The natural wood look and texture of the composite Dura Cladding enhanced the feeling of tranquillity and connection with the local landscape; its defining use was on several different types of wall façade as well as cladding for soffits and under ceilings. As well as contributing so much to the overall design ethos, Dura Cladding is easily installed, needs minimal maintenance and will not splinter, warp or rot throughout its 50 years design life expectancy whilst retaining the vast majority of its colour following initial weathering period. Another significant factor that led to its selection were the green credentials - 87% recycled content and also the fact that the product can be supplied as FSC © 100%. The hospital design was inspired by Ryhope’s river valley and cleverly uses the sloping site to maximise the views towards the North Sea. The new mental health campus provides a safe recovery centred environment with generous and relaxing places to appreciate views to the coast and surrounding landscape which sets new benchmarks for quality and long term value in modern mental health accommodation. Aesthetics of a building are always subjective and can be a highly emotive subject especially for the façade of a building. An aspect that is not subjective though, are life cycle costs. As Dura Cladding does not require painting or staining and together with the long design life, despite initially costing more, composite cladding can actually work out significantly cheaper when life cycle costs are added into the equation.

Delcote needs no primers

Often, the first time that you know you have a problem with a metal roof is when it leaks. Electronics company Maplins, discovered trouble with their roof during planned refurbishment of their premises, in Swansea. The steel roof had not been maintained, yet it still appeared fine from the underside. Once a survey was conducted from on top, it was obvious that the PVC coated steel roof sheets were exhibiting classic age related delamination of the original factory applied coating, plus associated substrate corrosion. The decision was taken to recoat the roof, with two coats of Delvemade’s Delcote a liquid silicone which, requires no primers. Delcote is an inorganic mineral-based silicone with outstanding natural resistance to corrosion and UV light. It forms a tenacious, oxygen-free bond with steel to deliver protection equal to or better than the original product. When used in conjunction with Seamsil it forms a unique system that provides a seamless, proven, long-term solution to the vast majority of existing metal roof problems. s part of the extensive remodelling and improving of schools across the London Borough of Islington, Reynaers aluminium systems have been installed throughout Islington Arts and Media School in a multi-million pound scheme that has turned the school into a vibrant, modern learning facility. Transformation of the school was completed after new building, extensive renovation and remodelling of the entire site took place as part of the schools improvement programme within the Borough. A Foundation Trust, Islington Arts and Media School saw the impressive scheme, designed by architects BDP, carried out in association with Balfour Beatty’s Transform Schools initiative, A critical part of the scheme was the substantial new build delivering state-of-the-art facilities with new science laboratories, ICT suites, arts, dance, drama, media and music classrooms and practice rooms, new sports hall and a dedicated theatre. Bold sweeps of Reynaers CW 50 curtain wall feature on both the new main entrance and the expansive new facilities adding large expanses of glazed areas bringing natural light right into the heart of the school. Strategically located runs of Reynaers Brie Soleil offer sun

screening, minimizing the effect of solar gain and glare, while allowing the ingress of daylight. Installed within the fenestration all through the new building are Reynaers CS 77 parallel opening windows. They combine ease of operation with highly efficient ventilation, compared to top hung windows, along with optimised safety and security. Facilitating greater internal air movement they allow the effective passage of stale air out of the classroom, refreshing and enhancing the learning environment by helping to reduce the concentrations of carbon dioxide which can build up in specific areas of a classroom. Reynaers Vision 50 door systems are installed on the major thoroughfares within the new building and are also on the main entrance area. Suitable for high usage in busy areas they offer stylish design combined with excellent performance and low maintenance. Architectural Ironmongers West Lothian Hardware introduced the college’s maintenance department to the HOPPE Quick-Fit Plus handles when they were looking for a smart, tamper-proof solution for a problem with colleges existing handles. “The college’s estates department were looking to fit new handles because the old ones were beginning to look past their best,” says West Lothian Hardware’s Alan McEwan. “The old handles had had roses pulled off, screw holes were showing and they really did look untidy. Because the Quick-Fit Plus handles come with an integral rose they resist vandalism, and there’s no screw holes so they really do look smart. The whole team at the College has found them easy to install – there’s not even a need for tools to fit them!” For further information visit: www.hoppe.com/gb/en/door-handles

Hewitech Selected In Redevelopment Of Ashford Wastewater Treatment Works

Clark-Drain launches economical B125 block slot drainage channel

Ashford Wastewater Treatment Works has undergone a £12.6 million redevelopment as part of Southern Water’s future investments. To ensure the high standard of service was maintained and able to accommodate a 30% increase in flows and loads, Southern Water specified the best suppliers to meet their high expectations through design workshops in which Hewitech successfully showcased their range of cross flow media. All products had to contribute towards achieving National Environmental Programme (NEP) consent requirements while ensuring that the installation process wouldn’t affect the live water works and Southern Water customer Hewitech’s CF 15 PP Cross flow was specified for the application as NTF media as its structure provided a suitable surface for the growth of the bacterial film necessary in the nitrification process.

Drainage product and access cover leader, Clark-Drain, has launched the CD 430 a new CE marked block slot channel made from 100% recycled polypropylene which is fully certified to Load Class B125 BS EN 1433 for block paving and Load Class C250 BS EN 1433 for concrete. Clark-Drain believes that the CD 430 is essential to domestic driveway applications because it offers a more robust and durable solution to the Class A15 block slot drainage channels often installed and answers the question over their suitability to manage the increasing loads of present-day cars and vans. The CD 430 offers greater flexibility for installers and specifiers looking for an unobtrusive channel drainage system for their hard landscaping projects by delivering appropriate loading performances which can stand the test of time.

Our design team have used their knowledge to rethink the ideas of water management on a decentralised scale. With the current thinking of Water Sensitive Urban Design, RainActiv combines the requirements of drainage regulations with the added benefit of rainwater harvesting in a single unit. This is not simply “a bigger tank”. It ensures a controlled release of water into the drainage network-Active Attenuation. Our bespoke calculation service will allow design engineers to reduce their downstream attenuation systems and generate notable project savings at new build sites. Retrofitting could mitigate flooding in areas with surface water problems, or where frequent combined sewer overflows are causing pollution issues in an existing drainage network. www.rainwaterharvesting.co.uk 01733 405111

You deal direct with the

manufacturer, with over 25 years waste water experience, 24-7365 days of the year.” The Bio-Pure is a fibreglass conical shaped tank that is used for domestic sewage treatment. It works on the successful and simple extended aeration method, which means that the solids are treated as well as the liquids. The extended method used means that the sewerage is aerated for a minimum of 24 hours. Many other sewage systems only treat the sewage for a few hours. Treating the solids means that the Bio-Pure only needs emptying every 3-5 years typically, making it a simple and easy solution for sewage treatment. The unit is available in 10 sizes to cater from 1 to 50 persons and can serve both domestic and commercial properties that have no access to mains drainage. The Bio-Pure is also now available with an integrated pumped outlet. It is designed and built by specialist GRP Engineers to suit both domestic and commercial properties which have no access to mains drains. The ranges treatment plants are installed all over the UK offering reliable, easily maintained service and are fast becoming the bestselling

extended aeration system in the UK. The Bio-Pure range can also be used after an existing septic tank to enable the effluent to be discharged directly to a water causeway, if your existing soakaway has failed. Although it does require electricity to run, it is very inexpensive. The Bio-Pure works because it is based on a fit and forget basis. There are no moving parts on the unit, so it can not break down. The only part that could break down is the air pump, and you are covered by a 2 year warranty. You are also covered by a 25 year warranty on the GRP. As a member of British Water, We Build it has developed its range of package sewage treatment plants utilising proven SAF (submerged aerated filter) technology for maximum performance and reliability, using the most reliable energy efficient aeration blowers with a prolonged integral flow path system to maximise effluent quality. “All our Flowpath treatment plants are designed in accordance with the British Water Code of Practice for flows and loads, this range can be designed to meet your population and consent requirements.

“This range of products can be designed for larger scale commercial applications such as camping sites, leisure facilities, schools, hotels, offices and industrial applications.” Maintaining any sewage treatment plant is a very important, part of ensuring the efficiency of the system is ensuring you adhere to the operating and maintenance manual and annual servicing. We Build It advise customers servicing the system on an annual basis and this will take on average less than an hour to complete. It will also help you to meet your legal requirements with the Environment Agency. “Our service agreements not only provide excellent maintenance for our systems, but a variety of our competitors systems too, along with all spares such as pumps, fittings etc.” The company attend many trade shows throughout the year and recently appeared at this year’s Home Build and Renovation Show at the NEC Birmingham. Constructing your online profile Chris Burke, Director of Insight & Brand, ratedpeople.com

w

e live our lives online, whether that’s getting the latest sports scores, organising our social life or, especially important at this time of year – getting our present shopping done. So it makes sense that when it comes to getting the bigger things done in life we’d look online for guidance. And in particular, we want to know what our peers think. In our recent survey, we found 90% of consumers have consulted an online review before making a purchase. The construction trade is no different: these days, homeowners are logging onto their computers to find someone to get their dream extension off the ground. 70% of homeowners surveyed said that the online review was important or very important in making their decision. In

particular, online review sites such as Rated People – the UK’s leading online marketplace connecting homeowners with around 26,000 tradesmen, nationwide - are booming because they help homeowners make a more informed decision about which construction company they’ll select to work on their property. Yet, although we’ve all used them, 60% of customers admit to feeling nervous when dealing with a contractor they haven’t met before. How do you address these concerns? By making your online profiles a treasure trove of information about your good work: customer reviews and feedback, photos of past jobs and plenty of useful information are all crucial. Pictures are particularly key in building

trust and demonstrating that you can deliver on your promise. Laying down foundations for trust After being contacted by a homeowner, construction workers can immediately begin laying the foundations of a good working relationship. A phone call, email or planned home visit turns the online search process into something far more personal by putting a friendly face or voice onto a service. Remember: online review sites are an excellent meeting point, but once first contact is made, it’s in the hands of both you and the homeowner to make it happen. Online review sites also allow you to sniff out jobs that don’t quite add up. Everyone knows homeowners can have unrealistic expectations about the amount

Business-orientated construction workers have quickly noticed that online review sites can be used to create long-lasting relationships, as well as for finding one-off jobs. A happy homeowner will consider bringing in the same person again for future work.

of time and money it will take to build that extension or refurbish a loft. By using review sites as a means to find out more about jobs up-front, construction workers can get an early head’s up on which leads to pursue and which to avoid. A job well done Once a lead is secured, it’s crucial to do a good job. 89% of people surveyed said that online reviews are important when choosing a tradesman. It really does pay to leave customers satisfied –negative feedback could come back to bite you. It’s often the little things that help secure good recommendations: arriving on time, looking professional, listening to homeowners’ needs and following up on work with a phone call are all easy and effective ways of building a solid working

relationship. 58% of people surveyed have posted a review or given feedback so it’s worth devoting time to building a good working relationship with your client. Building relationships Business-orientated construction workers have quickly noticed that online review sites can be used to create long-lasting relationships, as well as for finding one-off jobs. A happy homeowner will consider bringing in the same person again for future work. Most will want to leave a good review if they’re satisfied, as they know it’s a great way to give praise for a job well done. Another way of looking at it is to see your online profile as something of an online contacts database, with associated reviews. Better yet, if a job lead isn’t secured,

construction workers can still use the online review process to get their name out there and impress potential clients. By replying quickly and courteously, you can stay in the mind of a homeowner for next time, even if you couldn’t do this job for logistical reasons. With so many benefits to using online review sites, it’s a no-brainer to make the most of the opportunities they offer. Whether it’s revamping your own site or taking half an hour to make sure your profiles on ratings sites are up to date, take some time this month to sharpen up your online presence.

Flowcrete Proves it is Streets Ahead at Street Crane

The robust nature of Flowcrete UK’s industrial floors made it the ideal partner for a world-leading crane manufacturer that wanted to develop a new, purposebuilt site to showcase its systems. Street Crane’s Chapel-en-le-Frith facility in High Peak needed a flooring solution that would be able to withstand the heavy metal equipment used on-site as well as the substantial loads that would be hoisted and set down on the floor. To ensure that the right floor was installed Street Crane undertook a thorough specification process. As part of the specification process two sites with different supplier’s systems were visited. After examining both of these locations Street Crane chose to install the Flowcrete UK solution Flowcrete MF. Flowcrete UK’s approved applicators 4M Europe installed 2,000m2 of Flowcrete MF at Street Crane’s new site. For further information visit: www.flowcrete.co.uk

As part of a refurbishment project, Frontrunner Plus entrance matting was installed in several entrances at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), the oldest and largest university and research institution in Denmark. Supplied by distributor Top Matting, this entrance flooring system was chosen for its ease of maintenance, quick installation time and ex-stock availability. Manufactured from flexible PVC in the UK and USA by Plastic Extruders Ltd (Plastex), the product features an open grid which scrapes dirt off shoes and allows it to fall through, whilst the absorbent inserts capture moisture, keeping internal floors clean and dry. This translates to a reduction of cleaning and maintenance costs. Savings on installation time and cost are also achieved, as Frontrunner Plus is supplied in 10m long rolls, allowing for seamless and quick installations as the mat is cut on site.

DRU introduces new Metro 100XT gas fires with tablet app controls DRU Fires is a long established European manufacturer of gas, wood burning and multi-fuel fires that was founded in the Netherlands in 1754. It has subsidiary companies in the UK and Belgium, and exports to many other countries worldwide. DRU has announced improvements to its popular Metro100XT series of ‘letterbox’ gas fires in time for the autumn 2014 season. The DRU Metro 100XT range is a selection of glassfronted, contemporary gas fires that can be installed in homes, with or without a conventional chimney. The fires utilise the balanced flue system, in which air is drawn from outside the building for combustion and waste gases expelled outside using a concentric flue. This results not only in an impressive flame picture, but an energy efficiency rating in excess of 80% for all the Metro 100XT models. For further information, visit: www.drufire.co.uk

With a central energy centre serving all three buildings, service entry points were ducted into the base of internal service risers early in the construction process. Panasonic Launches New Intelligent Remote Control Panels For Hotels

50

New environmentally friendly chillers future-proof cooling

Panasonic has developed a new intelligent LCD remote control panel which integrates all hotel devices, including Panasonic’s ECOi VRF system. This new LCD panel from Panasonic is meeting the demand from hoteliers for systems which offer energy savings, and also providing hotel customers with control over the room environment. Panasonic’s remote control integrates all key devices in a hotel room to ensure that visitors can operate the various aspects from one panel. The remote control is able to integrate lighting, card reader, blinds, window contact, motion detector and air conditioning. The LCD panel is easy to understand and hotel customers can alter the settings for these different applications.

Adcock Refrigeration and Air Conditioning has introduced a range of totally environmentally friendly chillers that use totally natural refrigerants. Fresh from winning the national RAC Cooling Award, Contractor of the Year, the company’s launch of their new packaged air and water cooled fluid chillers will bring huge benefits to users of commercial chiller technology in terms of energy use, efficiency and environmental impact. Offering zero global warming potential and a significant reduction in energy consumption, hydrocarbon chillers will provide a future-proof solution to a wide range of industries. Hydrocarbon chillers use the natural HC refrigerant R1270 which, with a global warming potential of only 3, is not affected by proposed phase-out’s under European F-Gas regulations.

For more information on the LCD remote control tank, please visit www.aircon.panasonic.eu

The Classroom Challenge:

Having already produced a class-leading Passive Ventilation system the question was asked: “Can a specialised unit be produced to provide high performance heat-recovery ventilation for classrooms?” The challenge was to produce a unit to fit within the typical restraints of a ‘tight’ false-ceiling while supplying and exhausting a minimum of 260l/s at an acceptable sound level to satisfy BB93 and with a target SFP of ≤ 0.9W/l/s. This is 45% less energy use than the current maximum SFP allowable of 1.6W/l/s (Government directive 2013) and therefore helps with achieving building compliance. A further objective was to enable the unit to be turned-down by, at least, 50% air volume without the risk of the heat exchanger going into a laminar-flow condition where no heattransfer would take place. Enter the ‘Classmaster’®. With a casing height of only 300mm, Classmaster delivers the required airflow for a typical classroom with the ability to be turned down in 25% steps plus a summer bypass ‘boost’ setting of up to 300l/s to combat over-heating.

This year we’ve seen an 82% increase in sales which proves that Surface Design Show is getting bigger and better year on year.

Discover the latest innovations in surface design at Surface Design Show 2015 R

eturning to London’s Business Design Centre between 1012 February 2015, Surface Design Show is the only event in the UK that focuses solely on interior and exterior surfaces. With an 80% increase in exhibitor uptake the breadth of new products to discover in 2015 will be astounding.

Since its inception in 2005 the show has become the destination for industry people to see, touch and explore the latest materials for the built environment, gain new insights and network with like-minded designers, architects and suppliers. Next year’s event is already proving to be a huge success. All of the ground floor and mezzanine has been filled with key exhibitors leading the organisers to extend the show to the BDC’s balcony area to meet the demand for space. There will be over 120 exhibitors including Mundy Veneer, specialists within the veneer industry and the exclusive UK distributors of Tabu products, CD (UK) who for over 30 years have been the sole distributors of Corian in the UK. Knauf whom specialise in limestone, lime, chalk and cement related products and Spectral a lighting company whose luminaires have received coveted international awards including iF and Reddot will too be among the selection of top quality exhibitors. Surface Design Show is also delighted to be welcoming new exhibitors to the show including RAK Ceramics the world’s largest ceramics manufacturer, Hi Con a leading European brand of high performance concrete whose properties are used to create super thin balconies and staircases as well as Jotun the World’s leading manufacturer of paints, coatings and powder coatings which have been used for a number of prestigious

international projects including the Eiffel Tower, the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia and the Buri Khalifa in Dubai.

‘This year we’ve seen an 82% increase in sales which proves that Surface Design Show is getting bigger and better year on year. It’s great to see the enthusiasm of all those involved, the inspiration it provides and the creativity that comes out of the show’, said Event Director Christopher Newton. There will also be a packed programme of events and entertainment including the Preview Evening’s Live Debate hosted by RIBA Journal on Tuesday 10 February. The ever popular PechaKucha Evening will take place on Wednesday 11 February and will provide an informal and fun presentation of inspirational slides for the onlooking architects and designers. BIM4FitOut, a special interest group to the government BIM Task Group, which represents the finishes and fit out sector will again be organising an engaging workshop at the Show. New event highlights to the Show include ‘Materials Speed Dating’ the 2015 version of Future Thinking, hosted by Materials Council which is a fun and interactive way to be rapidly introduced to new surfaces & finishes and in-turn meet your ‘perfect materials match’. Light and surface are inseparable partners; the interplay between light and surface can change a building’s interior or exterior dramatically creating breath taking results. Hosted within Surface Design Show and presented by Light Collective and the Institution of Lighting Professionals is Light School, an area dedicated to lighting. Light School consists of three parts: The School Room, Product School and the School Newspaper all of which are designed to educate and

inspire visitors about the latest in lighting design and lighting products. Sponsored by iGuzzini, there will be more than two days of lessons in the School Room featuring hands on demos with top UK lighting designers who will be taking on the role of lecturers. Global Color Research™ will also return to the Show. Following the success of the 2013 and 2014 Trend Wall, the influential consultancy and creators of colour forecasting publication MIX Magazine will work with acclaimed surface designer Giles Miller to present Colour Collaborations. The exhibit, located in and outside the Business Design Centre is designed to inspire and give insight, focusing on the vital colour and material trends for 2016 and their importance within design. Part of the outstanding success of the Show is the commitment to recognising excellence with the Surface Design Awards. The Awards recognise examples of progressive design and the use of innovative surfaces in projects both in the UK and internationally. Categories cover projects in Retail, Commercial, Housing, Public Building, Light and Surfaces and Temporary Structures. Launched in 2013, the Awards have grown quickly both in stature and the number of entrants. This year, 181 projects were entered, a record number increasing by a staggering 62% with a third of entries from overseas making it the UK’s leading award scheme to identify innovation in surface design. The Awards presentation will take place on Thursday 12 February 2015 at the Business Design Centre in London on the last day of Surface Design Show. Interiors & Interior Design Signbox provides branding for stylish refurbishment of Paternoster House Signbox has collaborated with interior designer Resonate Interiors to implement an eye-catching refurbishment of the commercial reception area at the Paternoster House office complex in Paternoster Square, City of London. The architectural sign specialist was fundamental in executing a challenging signage project that has greatly enhanced the property’s conspicuousness in a historic area within the British capital. Located adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral, managing agent Savills commissioned the job on behalf of Paternoster House’s owner, Commerzbank. The brief was to create a more inspiring and visually attractive reception area which had greater presence from the street, explains Pernille Stafford, Resonate Interiors’ Managing Director. “The brief was two-fold,” says Stafford. “Firstly, we needed to modernise the interior of the reception, which was dated and gloomy. It featured a dark and busy red marble floor that, when combined with the inappropriate layout, was detrimental to the visitor experience. Secondly, the entrance lacked presence in a busy area. We had to devise a holistic design that both addressed these issues and simultaneously capitalised on and blended with the prestigious location and its surroundings.” The pallet of the design was minimal and stylish, with the use of timber, copper and grey stone. Paying homage to one of the most famous and recognisable sites in the

world, Pernille and her team incorporated the cathedral into the design, using a printed glass graphic depicting the inside of the building’s iconic dome. The vivid colours of the glass manifestation juxtapose with the light cream interior brickwork and neutral grey tile floor. In addition, a new light raft was installed to lift the area’s natural space. However, in order to meet the brief, it was vital that the interior was supported by the exterior design. “We needed a signage solution that was not only attention grabbing in a tasteful way, but that worked in sympathy with the current architecture,” says Stafford. “For this, we required a specialist who understood the deft touch required to implement signage that respects a building’s environment. Having worked with Signbox before, we knew that the company could create an innovative solution that would add the final flourish to the whole design, marrying the elements and finishes used by our joiners.” Signbox developed a prominent LED illuminated portal sign that was to sit comfortably within the brick arches that led to the reception. This required a great deal of finesse and meticulous attention to detail as not to impend on the existing architecture of the building, while simultaneously adhering to colour reference points and copper detailing that was set out by Resonate Interiors. “This project was all about getting the details perfect while maximising on a limited budget and space to optimum effect,” concludes Stafford. “Signbox provided an exemplary service and was fundamental in helping the detail on this project really sing.” Mark Bartlett, Managing Director, Signbox. added “This project was all about the details, from matching the palette tones to ensuring the installation was finished on time. It’s a wonderful addition to our growing London portfolio.” For further information visit: www.signbox.co.ukt

At the UK Property Awards on Friday 24th October, Alexander James Interiors was delighted to scoop the prize for ‘Best Interior Design in a Private Residence’ (South East).

Awarding-winning luxury from Alexander James Interiors Shamwari wins at the UK Property Awards

S

ituated on a prestigious Berkshire estate, the winning property ‘Shamwari’ has spacious accommodation over three floors, interesting design features, such as the use of balconies, and a split level kitchen/ breakfast/ family room. Despite its many attractions, the new owners wanted to make their own mark on the property. They felt the interior layout was cold and disproportionate, with high ceilings but low doors and windows. Also that the interior looked clinical and lacked emotion; it was too bland and minimal for their tastes. The Alexander James Interiors team Natalie Rudland, interior designer and interior architect, Marina Demarchuk, collaborated to create a stunning and luxurious environment for entertaining using rich, warm colours with pattern and texture. Numerous structural changes were made to the new build property including the external doors, raising the internal doors and windows, moving walls, building columns and constructing a fireplace. Bespoke statement pieces were designed and created including a two metre square mirror, fretwork screen, marble fireplace, spiral chandelier and lighting throughout with dimmable mood options. The clients now love their new home, commenting, “Alexander James Interiors completely transformed the interior 360 degrees and now the property has the wow factor effect. The end result is an attractive wonderful home for us all to live in and entertain.”

Natalie and Marina are also delighted with the completed project. Natalie comments, “With the house itself being grand I focussed on maintaining grandeur throughout. Using a selection of warm and rich colours, together with bold patterns and textures, it created a warming and relaxing atmosphere with a rich gold accent. Large sculptural pieces of furniture were used to create impact in the open spaces. A magnificent chandelier was commissioned to complement the large double height entrance hall. It was really important for me to find the right feature lighting to accompany the architectural lighting.”

Glazing Vision felt that there might have been a risk of fracture, due to the sheer size of the horizontal pane.

Using rooflights to make T the most of natural light Broombank is a RIBA award winning new build house designed by SOUP architects, situated on the edge of River Alde in Suffolk.

he balance between nature and architecture

The brief, as stated by SOUP, was to ‘create a relaxed contemporary house within a reconsidered, “natural” landscape that blurred the site boundaries to its neighbours and adjoining marshland’. The location therefore remained a strong focal point throughout the entire project, with each aspect of the build designed to accentuate the stunning views of ‘outstanding natural beauty’. As Patrick Walls, from SOUP explains, the central motif was to ‘try and control the sense of arrival and movement through the house by creating an entrance courtyard to the front which didn’t give a direct view through to the River Alde’. He goes on to say that ‘the view is kept and created by the front entrance; you move through into the main living space which then opens out onto the wide landscape’. The property itself has been kept minimalist in style; large open space and concrete floors remain neutral in colour to further highlight the

surrounding greenery. The unfolding relationship between nature and architecture is maintained through the property via the carefully positioned rooflights that allow sunlight to pervade the building. Using rooflights to make the most of natural light As part of the architects vision to incorporate as much outdoor space as possible, Glazing Vision were delighted to supply a range of bespoke rooflights to make the most of this natural source of light. The central feature Glazing Vision supplied was a Bespoke ‘Eaves’ Flushglaze Rooflight [3650mm x 1685mm]. This was positioned within the stairwell, enabling light to flood into a typically dark, enclosed space using both horizontal and vertical sections of glass. Glazing Vision’s ethos of ‘minimal framework’ made them the natural choice when it came to the roof glazing on this building. In order to achieve the goals of the design brief, the avoidance of visible framework was critical to the overall aesthetic.

The glass on the central feature rooflight appears to disappear into the building fabric, forming a seamless integration between the glass and building envelope. As communication is essential when dealing with small details, Glazing Vision provided detailed general arrangement drawings. These included recommendations on how internal finishes might be carried out in order to minimise, and in most cases, completely hide any supporting framework. Frameless glass finishes are not always easy to achieve. One of the critical design requirements of glass used in any building project is to resist the loads created by wind pressure and snow, as this can dictate the maximum single pane size permitted before the deflection of the glass exceeds what is considered safe. Glazing Vision calculated the appropriate thickness and type of glass to meet the specified requirements. After initially assessing the unit and the deflection of glass to wind pressure, Glazing Vision felt that there might have been a risk of fracture, due to the sheer size of the horizontal pane. Refining the design for better performance The rooflight therefore had to be considered with a new specification to deliver the appropriate safety requirements. Glazing Vision’s standard glass specification of 6mm toughened glass was increased to 10mm thickness on the horizontal plane in order to minimize deflection. The eaves unit was designed in house at Glazing Vision by one of their experienced cad designers, before being expertly installed to meet the new specification. Without these revisions, further framework would have been needed to support the horizontal pane of glass; splitting the pane into two sections in order to strengthen the large unit. Ultimately, the overall flow of the glass and minimalist appearance of the property would have been interrupted. The homeowner’s requirement for a haven of peace and tranquillity was fulfilled, primarily due to the carefully planned use of light and space throughout the design build. Installing the bespoke rooflight required a high level of skill and attention to detail. Glazing Vision were able to adapt their designs to deliver the best possible performance, meet safety requirements and to achieve the desired, minimalist aesthetic. KEMPER SYSTEM ENABLES BARNSLEY TOWN HALL TO KEEP HERITAGE INTACT www.kempersystem.co.uk

W

ith its Portland Stone façade and its classical architecture, Barnsley Town Hall is one of South Yorkshire’s most distinctive landmarks and best loved buildings. When Barnsley Council commissioned a project to refurbish the roof as part of a programme of improvements to the building, Kemper System not only had to ensure that the roof was upgraded successfully without any disruption to council services but also had to complete the scheme without any impact on the rest of the building. Explains Victoria Ramwell, technical sales representative of Kemper System: “The project involved installation of a new warm roof system to enhance the thermal

performance of the building as well as providing a new waterproofing surface. “The town hall remained occupied throughout the programme and the building not only involved challenges in terms of the roof build up and complexity but also has delicate features that we had to protect during the works, affecting the way in which the programme was designed.” To address these challenges, the Stratex warm roof system with Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing membrane was specified by Kemper System. Kemperol 2K-PUR is solvent-free and odourless; ideal for use on occupied buildings where the odours from solvent based or so called low-odour products can be disruptive. Kemperol is also cold applied

and therefore can be installed without hot works or the fire risk associated with them. The existing roof build up consisted of asphalt, followed by a screed and a further layer of asphalt. Barnsley Council were keen to reduce the weight on the roof and so the top two layers had to be removed before installing the new roof. The remaining asphalt surface varied in condition and a new vapour control layer had to be installed over large areas of the roof surface before installation of Kemper System’s Kempertherm insulation board. A tapered insulation scheme was chosen to aid with rainwater drainage. Stuart Hicks, marketing manager from Kemper System explains: “The Stratex

The Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid system enabled the contractor to install the waterproofing to the exact contours of these roof details and seamlessly incorporated all adjoining areas and drainage channels into a single monolithic membrane.

system is designed to enable the installer to choose between mechanical or adhesive fixings for the insulation and initially the contractor planned to use mechanical fixings.

Stuart continues: “The complexity of the roof meant that it would have been extremely difficult to install a new waterproof surface with anything other than a liquid membrane.

“However, it was clear when the installation team started to drill pilot holes that the vibration could cause damage to the internal décor and potentially the ornamental glass dome inside the building. As a result, adhesive was used to fix the insulation.”

“In addition to the roof light, above the internal glass ceiling dome, and the channel we had created around it, we had to contend with a high parapet wall and the outlets that come out of it, numerous skylights, a central plinth and two plant rooms on the roof.”

As the level of the new insulation was above the lower edge of the glass on the large lantern rooflight, and so as not to interfere with the structure, a drainage channel was created around the roof light and lined with the Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane.

The Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid system enabled the contractor to install the waterproofing to the exact contours of these roof details and seamlessly incorporated all adjoining areas and drainage channels into a single monolithic membrane. Applied wet-on-wet in a

single process, the liquid resin saturates a reinforcement fleece and cures to form a tough, flexible substrate that cannot delaminate. After completing the entire roof, red aggregate surfacing was applied to designated areas to create non-slip maintenance walkways. A spokesperson for Barnsley Town Council said “We needed a roof refurbishment that would improve the town hall’s thermal performance and protect against water ingress. The solution from Kemper System not only answered these requirements but, being sustainably sourced and solvent-free, also conformed to our environmental objectives and ensured that we could carry on using the building as normal without any unpleasant odours or disruption.”

LuminFirePro LuminFirePro is a new fire-retardant plywood Euro Class B – s1,d0 where the panels are pressure impregnated with a humidity resistant, high temperature fire retardant chemical formulation based on Osmose FirePRO technology*. This is then air or kiln dried after treatment to ensure these properties are maintained.

Flamebreak Available as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), Flamebreak door blanks are manufactured with a special three layer tri-laminated hardwood timber core, which helps to eliminate gaps, rippling and telegraphing. They are also lightweight, and have an excellent substrate for easy machining and conversion, making them easy to handle and fix.

The process creates a product which enhances safety in applications where fire protection is the first priority by offering improved flame spread reduction to Euro Class B – s1,d0 as well as decreased smoke development. The panels have been tested to BS EN 13501 – 1 -:2007 + A1:2009 fire classification of construction products and building elements achieving class B – s1,d0 as well as being certified for structural use according to EN 13986 under CE1 system to guarantee full compliance with the Construction Product Regulation. H.Miller Bros. was formed in order to have creative control over all aspects of a project, rekindling the Arts & Crafts ideal of gesantkunstwerk – ‘a total work of art.’ The brothers decided to move both their businesses to Liverpool in early 2013 attracted by the potential

of the city’s amazing unused buildings and vibrant creative scene. H.Miller Bros. work from their design studio and furniture making workshop in a Victorian warehouse, also in The Baltic Triangle. Approached in April 2014, the brothers were tasked with designing and making the venue to be operational by that summer. In fact, from the H.Miller Bros. Being appointment to the opening party of Constellations was a little over 3 months. The design takes inspiration from the site; an enclosed brick courtyard created when the roof of a former warehouse burned down in the 1980’s. The remaining gables provide a backdrop to the design and these pitches are reflected as a motif in the profile of the canopy. The canopy, along with all the other components, was prefabricated in the H. Miller Bros. workshop, and slotted together on site in 3 days. The waffle soffet was made from standard

construction timber, planed down to remove rounded edges and grade markings. The undulations of the soffet create a variety of atmospheric spaces – beer hall, dining room, and intimate seating area. However these spaces are unified by the regular pattern of the ceiling. The structure is supported by a set of ten ‘quadrapods’ – doubled A-Frame supports -made from green oak. These have a duel function, as each one incorporated bench seating or a table. These quadrapods carry the load of the canopy via glue-lam beams, which project form the roof to form a wing-shaped rainspout. The courtyard garden is populated with green oak furniture, conceived as a set of tessellating components, and planted one-tone builders bags. These are easily movable, allowing the space to be reconfigured to accommodate the rolling program of arts events, performance, cinema screenings and a market.

IBI Group Designed Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre Starts on Site The new building will be four times larger than the University’s existing facilities, meaning staff from different departments will benefit from being housed under one roof, allowing for increased collaboration and innovation.

Practice Progresses Second Commission at the Maindy Road Campus ollowing the successful completion of Cardiff University’s Hadyn Ellis Building, IBI Group’s design for a subsequent phase of the Maindy Road Campus master plan has started on site; the £44million Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC).

The new building will be four times larger than the University’s existing facilities, meaning staff from different departments will benefit from being housed under one roof, allowing for increased collaboration and innovation. The facility will contain MRI and Magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning suites, laboratories, office accommodation and seminar facilities. “IBI Group designed one of the first MEG facilities in the UK at University of Oxford,” said Richard Golledge, Architect and Associate Studio Director at IBI Group. “The practice has applied this knowledge and data from the ‘4 labs 4 cities’ research

by its R&D team IBI THiNK, to benchmark the CUBRIC building design against other leading international examples of science facilities.” The CUBRIC project developed from an initial feasibility study by IBI Group’s Cardiff studio in January 2013 and achieved planning approval in August 2014. Responding to the context in which it sits, the design will employ similar energy efficient features at the Hadyn Ellis Building, which achieved a BREEAM Higher Education Award Wales for sustainable design. Research at CUBRIC is focused on four inter-related research themes: Imaging Science; Neuroscience; Clinical Research; and Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics. This research aims to have a direct impact on understanding human health and well being, including the brain changes that lead to disordered cognition and mental health. Cardiff University’s brand

new medical research facility is due to complete in 2016. Studios in the UK include: London, Oxford, Cardiff, Brighton, Rochdale, Handforth, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newark, and Birmingham. Website: www.ibigroup.com

Altro Xpresslay helps slash time and cost at new Cardiff School Altro XpressLayTM safety flooring has provided a significant time and cost saving solution in the construction of the new St Teilo’s Church in Wales High School in Cardiff. he new £26 million school was designed by architects Austin-Smith: Lord. It is a contemporary design, with classrooms clustered in blocks off a main central ‘street’. Kate Smith, designer at Austin-Smith: Lord, said:“Due to the huge length of space of the school’s main street, the floor construction included many movement joints, which had a knock on effect to the movement requirements of the floor finish.

T

“The main contractor,Willmott Dixon, suggested that we look at Altro XpressLay as it can be laid straight to slab with no DPM and no fixing joints - creating a huge time and cost saving for the project. We were now confident we had a product that could meet this specific need. “In addition to the main ‘street’, we specified Altro XpressLay for the break-out areas within each of the school’s blocks that come off the main street. We used a variety of different wedge-shaped colours of the product to delineate different areas. It looks very striking. “We also specified the product for corridors, some classrooms, and in the toilets and changing rooms in conjunction with Altro Walkway™ 20, which shares the same colour palette.” Altro XpressLay is the world’s first adhesive-free, truly sustainable safety floor. It is installed using a tape system instead of adhesive, so can be installed without a surface DPM. It can be easily removed post-installation, re-used elsewhere and then at the end of its life be recycled. The range boasts 41 colours, featuring bright and subtle, sparkle-free designs and decorative chipped options to give you a huge selection to choose from. Its shared colour palette with Altro Walkway 20 enables you to combine use of both ranges to suit the application.Altro Easyclean Maxis PUR™ Technology ensures the product stays look good long-term. Like all Altro safety flooring products,Altro XpressLay offers sustained slip resistance for the lifetime of the product, keeping your risk of a slip or fall to just 1 in a million. The Altro products at St Teilo’s were installed by CS Flooring, in Cardiff. Owner Anthony Mynett

said:“This was the biggest Altro XpressLay installation we have ever done, at 6,250m2. It was a perfect example of how the product can be used to cut costs and accelerate a building programme without sacrificing quality, longevity or aesthetics.” Anthony Mynett continued:“The beauty of installing Altro XpressLay is that it needs no adhesive, just its own weight alone, plus some strategically placed fixing tape. It’s quick, easy and clean. This means we saved days on the installation – probably cutting it by half. The entire process took us just 12 weeks. “An added bonus with this product is that individual sections can easily be lifted and replaced if required, rather than having to take up the whole floor and re-adhere.There were some sceptics who didn’t believe that the product would be suitable for this application, but they have been proved wrong.” CS Flooring also installed Altro DesignerTM 25 safety flooring and Altro Whiterock SatinsTM hygienic wall cladding in the school service and eating areas, using black and red colour schemes to denote raw and cooked food preparation areas. Altro Designer 25 is a 2.5mm-thick, hard-wearing safety flooring which includes coloured quartz crystals in exciting base colours to enhance any interior scheme. Altro Whiterock Satins is a durable, groutfree, water-tight smooth wall cladding system designed for building environments that are required to meet strict hygiene standards. The panels provide a stain resistant, wipe-clean surface with no gaps or cracks for bacteria to hide in. It is extremely impact resistant and ideal for tough areas. Chris Woodruff, Principal Surveyor at main contractor Willmott Dixon, commented on the use of Altro XpressLay on the St Teilo’s project: “It has proved to be a quality product that saved us time and cost on a project where we were able to provide betterment on the delivery programme.”
