Current members remain financial until this can occur (hopefully by September or October 2020). PRESIDENT’S REPORT Just when we thought that there was a possibility for us to have our first collective General Meeting at CSTC, the ‘ok by Council’ given towards end of last week, the expectation of a relaxation or easing of the Victorian Covid-19 Restrictions, then ‘the weekend of 19th/20th June. We had been looking at temporary alternative location that would cope with at least 25 persons and comply with the social distancing requirements of the Covid Restrictions for the next meeting. Just so that we could have a ‘gathering’. There has always been the threat of if there is a spike, or ‘second wave’ we could face the potential for specific suburban area lockdown. And what happens, a reduction in the number of persons permitted in internal spaces: we take one step forward and two steps back. No, it is not a dance step. As the longer term members would know, I don’t & can’t dance. Shuffle is more like it. But this is what we face, ‘the cards are dealt’, and we see what is possible – outside activity in controlled arrangement is possible, so lets try to make the most of it, within the Vic. Govt Covid Restrictions constraints. We won’t analyse or speculate why specific suburban areas became prone to so many cases; let others do this. It is bad to see the resurgence of ‘panic buying’ in specific items throughout many suburbs, there is no need for this behaviour at all. On a lighter note, it was great to be part of the trip to ‘Winchelsea/Anglesea/Aireys Inlet/return’ at the end of May, being ‘Tail End Charlie’ from the beginning of the trip to virtually the trip conclusion, but that’s another story, its Trip Report will detail all. Those who participated, please remember to send photos to Damian, or to discuss with him as to how to provide any video you had taken, so that it can be uploaded onto our website & Facebook media. New material uploaded attracts interest, and potential additional members, many of our recent new members can testify to this. The Committee embraces the concept of membership growth, and wants involvement in Club activities to continue to improve, and provide an outlet for enjoyment for the Club’s members. It is also good to see the Discussion forum being utilised, and the online trip system becoming populated with planned trips, all trips currently have compliance with the most recent imposed restrictions. I encourage you all to frequently visit our ‘members area’ of the website. And, if you have forgotten your login password, the system works at allowing you to reset it. I tested it recently. The recent ‘downtime’ we have all had in March to May appears to have opened a yearning to escape to activities, looking at the planned trips section we are starting to see the return of more weekend trips in the coming months – take advantage of them and participate if you are able to. Bring an element of normality in a currently challenging and changing time. All of the Committee look forward to the opportunity to be able to say “meeting will be at CSTC” in hopefully the near future. It will be a ‘welcome back’ affair.

Remember, stay safe Mark Tyssen President, e: president@subaru4wdvic.com.au

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT Restrictions are easing and some state borders opening but overseas travel seems a fair way off. While new vehicle sales have collapsed over the last few months, reports are that large 4WD wagon sales have grown indicating money is being spent on plans to travel within Australia, probably towing large luxury caravans. At least we already have the vehicles to explore off the main highways. Check out the discussion forum on the website. It is a good place to recommend camping products, modifications or trip ideas. Like something that has worked out well, let the members know. If it didn't work you can issue us a warning. I am on a Land cruiser site (IH8MUD) that is amazing for technical advice and guides, sourcing parts, online factory service manuals, follow restoration builds and even a registry of surviving vehicle build dates and serial numbers from around the world. Some Australian brands (such as ARB and Old Man Emu) are highly sought after, as are Australian diesel models never sold in the U.S. Tim Folliard Vice President, e: vice-president@subaru4wdvic.com.au

RESOURCES REPORT Club merchandise has been ordered for both club stock and for those who placed an order. Hopefully members will have the opportunity to wear their new shirts in the near future. Hope you are keeping safe. Bev Davison Resources Officer e: resources@subaru4wdvic.com.au

EDITOR’S NOTE While things looked promising a few weeks ago, with restrictions being lifted and a well patronised club trip going ahead, we have now fallen back into restrictions. The trip, to the Anglesea Heath and Otway Ranges areas, has been well covered in this month’s magazine. Despite the new restrictions on home visitors and inside gatherings at least this weekend’s trip was also able to proceed as planned and, from all accounts, was another success. I am assured that there will be another great trip report coming along in time for next month’s magazine. We also have a member’s drive article with a difference this month, courtesy of Stewart, one of our newest club members. As you can see, the format of the article is quite straightforward so I will be looking forward to receiving more of these for coming months. Don’t forget to contact me if you have any photos or videos from our recent club trips so that they can be shared with other club members through our magazine, our website or our Facebook page. MEMBER’S DRIVES MY2016 Outback By Stewart Southam

The Ride - A 2016 Subaru Outback Under the Hood - 3.6 litre petrol Accessories and Toys - still need to fit a towbar for our A-van; apart from that - none Modifications - none Wish List - major trips - Cape York (we were supposed to go last year but it rained, and rained and ...) and Great Central Road & W.A. (Pilbara+) Club trips - none yet Memorable past trips - Tanami track & Gibb River Rd and Flinders ranges Previous Rides - '82 FJ40 Landcruiser - does anyone want to buy one? Quite a few others; a BMW 2002 was probably the most interesting.

And, in case anyone was asking the question, I plan to take the A-van on the major trips (I'm not sure how sensible that is). The only trips that the Outback has been on so far are 22 trips to the Waverley Recycle Centre. I got rid of our trailer (it was 40+ years old and falling to bits) but the Outback did the trick. The photo is of it loaded-up and ready for one of the trips.

I was going to attach a photo of the FJ40, just for interest, but the file was too big! We're also in the Landcruiser Club (but only 'til we sell the FJ40), the Toyota 4WD Club (that was Cape York and that's where we met Brian Lewis - late FWDV treasurer, ED.) and, of course, the A-Van Club.

TRIP REPORTS Anglesea Heath and Otway Ranges Day Trip Sunday May 31st. There was a very small window between COVID 19 restrictions being relaxed and Parks Victoria closing these tracks on June 1. I listed the trip on the website and it was the quickest response ever so there was certainly some built up demand to get out on a trip. There were so many registered that I had to create 2 conveys. The weather had been fine for the preceding week but rain was forecast for the Sunday. Many of the tracks are not recommended in the wet but the drive to Winchelsea revealed fine and clear conditions. There were a few late cancellations but nine vehicles were all ready to leave at 9.30 am. Not ten as the club president (convoy 2 leader) was still on the highway. Martin remained while the rest of us headed down to the dirt road outside the vehicle testing centre to air down and wait. All arrived so it was a right turn into Haggarts Track and then Allardyce Track and into 4WD. The tracks were in good condition, with sections of sand and some good views across the Heath over Anglesea and the ocean. The old open cut mine and old power station chimney were prominent.

12

TRIP REPORTS CONT.

After a coffee break in a busy Anglesea, we headed back inland to Denham Track. This track is about 10 km long, a mixture of sand and clay with some short steep climbs, sharp turns and ruts. Some wet sections showed how difficult it could be but no problem today. Lunch break at Hammonds Campground. A sign indicated camping was still banned but much work had been done on the site with fixed fireplaces, raised wooden decks and built up sandy tent sites as the area can get wet. A quick run through a forestry track to a high point for a vehicle group photo opportunity but the weather had changed and we still needed to get back to the coast. And that would be via Gentle Annie Track. Very early on there was signs this area had recently had some rain with sections of mud but traction was good and everyone got through, Some puddles were on the track which quickly covered the vehicles with mud. Many sections had various options to choose from mild ruts to very deep and broken sections. Some big tyres had been through this track. This area is a forest of larger trees and usually a koala to be seen but not today but there were numerous kangaroos. The photo shows Rick's exit for a deeply rutted section. Again only a short 10 km track but a really good drive which exits near Fairhaven for a drive along the Great Ocean Road with surfers braving the cold. The trip ended at the Airey's Inlet 13

TRIP REPORTS CONT. lighthouse car park with some of us taking a walk alongside the lake to the beach with the lighthouse in the background. Then it was the rattle of air compressors and on the highway home before it got too dark.

Rick taking the road less travelled

Eighty percent of the vehicles on this trip were Subarus on this trip with Les Ralph rolling out his new Isuzu extended cab ute. The only casualty for the day seems to have been the plastic splash tray on the XV. A call to Road Less Travelled for some underbody protection may be in order.

It is not known as yet whether Camberwell South Tennis Centre will re-open for meetings any time soon ACTION: Martin to contact Roger Church. Assuming CSTC were available, it still may not be of a suitable size to accommodate 20 people, given the 4 square metre rule; and the meeting numbers may exceed 20 anyway. It was agreed that until restrictions eased further, the June Meeting would be cancelled. However, this decision may be reversed if circumstances change. It may be advisable to have a short online meeting of Committee mid-June to consider this again. Notification to members will be delayed until 19 June hoping for more clarity.
