Arc Wildlife Crossing Competition / Finalist

Denver, Colorado, 2010 - 2011 Collaboration with Balmori Associates, Studio MDA, and Knippers Helbig Submission of RFQ, Competition Design Team Manager As a result of a successful RFQ that I submitted, Balmori Associates was chosen as one of 5 finalists for the ARC Wildlife Crossing Competition. As part of the competition team we analyzed and researched how animals cross roads. Whether we provide the means to ease these movements or not, they occur with great frequency. Resulting collisions with vehicles represent a safety hazard for travelers, a significant financial burden, and a threat to the viability of species populations located in landscapes dissected by roads. The Modular Crossing System applied on the bridge utilizes the surrounding landscape in order to create a new shape inspired by nature. The design uses a low tech system of layering wood planes to create an easily modifiable shape. The main focus was the sustainability of the bridge. By the massive use of wood - which is a change of paradigm - a low quality wood can be used (for example the beetle killed blue pine of Colorado). Quick installation time and small interference with the ongoing traffic are key. Most of the bridge is prefabricated in the shop. The pieces, maximized to the biggest allowable transportation size, will be assembled at the bridge location next to the street. These bigger pieces (arches) are still light enough to be handled with a crane. So the interference with the traffic is minimized to the moving hours of the crane. The crane could rest on the street during these hours. No scaffolding. Would be needed making it very quick, and very efficient to build.

LANDSCAPE V.O.I.L. Headquarters

Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2009 - Current Collaboration with Balmori Associates – Rendering, Planting Design and Selection. Concept Design through Design Development This design for headquarters building preserves the Mata Atlantica forest in Brazil and uses this as the driving idea behind the landscape character. Only 9% of this uniquely Brazilian ecosystem remains and this project celebrates its biodiversity and spatial richness in the urban landscape. The landscape follows the spatial rhythm and patterns of the forest as it weaves across the site and through two towers that make up the program. Circulation, lobbies and gardens are shaped and defined by the use of its visitors and users.

Hudson Yards Park & Boulevard Competition / Finalist

New York, Ny, 2008 Collaboration with Balmori Associates and WORK ac - Submission of RFQ, Competition design team Hudson Yards linear park runs parallel to the Hudson River Park, while connecting the major transportation and cultural hubs of 34th and 42nd streets. The Wild West Side and Low Line Park is where Central Park meets Times Square in an explosion of ecological and programmatic exuberance. It is a park of movement that creates an urban leisure infrastructure by joining multiple pieces of program. The diversity and program grow organically out of the New York City grid, giving form and intensity the park. The Park as a new kind of linear park- one that is a hyper programmed response to its surrounding development.

LANDSCAPE

Cajasol Sevilla

Seville, Spain, 2009 Collaboration with Balmori Associates - Design Development detailing The central idea behind the landscape design for Caja Sol Sevilla is to create a shaded and cool path, with sounds and vapors of water, and variations in the degree of shade and shadows. The project is located in the south of the Isla of Cartuja, and is composed of a central square and two terraces on commercial podiums. The square is defined by the podiums that run north-south, which concentrate pedestrian activity and protected the plaza from the sun.

The City University Of New York ( CUNY ) City Tech Academic Building

Brooklyn, Ny 2009 Collaboration with Balmori Associates – Concept and Schematic Design package For the new LEED CUNY City Tech Academic Building we created a landscape that forms a continuous surface from the sidewalk entrance through the lobby to a garden courtyard. The idea is to enliven the public spaces and create a sense of the garden throughout.

LANDSCAPE

New Hancher Auditorium and Campus Masterplan

University Of Iowa, 2011- Current Collaboration with Balmori Associates – Concept Design With it’s water level rising and falling throughout the year, the Iowa River and surrounding landscape undergo constant dynamic change throughout the year while creating endemic habitats for flora, fauna, and humans alike. Since the 2008 floods devastated the Hancher auditorium in the University of Iowa, Balmori along with Pelli Clark Pelli was given the task to redesign a new auditorium and surrounding landscape that would stand the 500 year flood. We created a master plan for the Art Campus that provided the area with new currents of connectivity, creativity, and environmental performance. The area of study, the northern portion of the art campus, is an important moment within the campus plan representing the most northern anchor to the university and directly adjacent to Iowa City Park. Central to our plan is the idea of creating a new pedestrian bridge that is embedded in the landscape connecting an intimate riverfront garden on the east side to a series of landforms on the west that can be used for outdoor performance, temporary art exhibitions, recreational opportunities, educational opportunities, and water treatment areas. By creating significant areas of treatment and infiltration the stormwater collected on site can be cleaned and diverted into sculpted depressions that allow slow ground water infiltration and promote flood prevention strategies.

New Bauhaus Museum Weimar

5

0.00 Sustainability has been particularly thought through by planning a number of simple and efficient passive and active systems to minimise the energy consumption impact. A high thermal proof building envelope is achieved with light concrete blocks insulated on the outside with a black clay finish surface for long durability. Windows are the strictly necessary to provide generous natural light where needed. Horizontal structure and few columns will be made in reinforced concrete to to acheive long column free spans. The landscape design has also been developed with much attention and will act as a crown to marry the building to the city on different levels, creating a new characterised and interactive urban space for Weimar. Finally a signal mast at the main east pedestrian plaza will alway indicate the presence of the new "Urban System" open and accessible to the public at all times.

The new building for Weimar Bauhaus Museum has been thought considering a wide range of aspects. First of all it is a Public building, very accessible from many very different directions and bound to the surrounding environment in many ways. It responds to the brief's functional requirements and takes inspiration from the urban texture of Weimar which recalls some radical nature elements or some artist's vision - and creates a small Urban System that blurs into the fabric of the city trying to extend it rather than stand alone like another monumental presence. It opens to the park and to the city center redefining this pivotal point of Weimar. The intention is to aggregate in the urban territory and not only in the building itself thus keeping a very recognisable architectural presence. The respect of the site caracteristics and limitations such as the contaminated soil and the intention to expand the brief to kindergarden and more exibition has been all taken into account.

The landscape design has also been developed with much attention and will act as a crown to marry the building to the city on different levels, creating a new characterized and interactive urban space for Weimar. Pasaia Bay Masterplan Competition / Finalist

Pasaia, Spain 2010 Collaboration with Balmori Associates and S333 - Submission of RFQ, Competition design team The Bay of Pasaia was once an attractive, natural estuary for the River Oiastzun but over time the waterfront areas have been transformed into large man-made sites for shipyards, warehouses and for the storage of materials and goods. Titled ‘Revealing the Water’, the masterplan is premised on breaking down this artificial land, returning the waterfront sites to their natural state.

Barn in the Forest

Upstate New York, 2010 Design proposal for Columbia University Landscape Design Master’s program This modern house designed by Angela Patterson is one of four barn-like structures that have been adapted to become modern homes. The project proposes that if the house is readapted farm structure then other aspects of the agricultural language could also be readapted and transformed into a contemporary language. By blending an agricultural model into the forest the landscape is transformed. Fences, water, fences and trails and the idea of cycles are turned into a pool, stonewalls, and a mobile gallery that follows the sun. The crop squares are reinterpreted into incisions on the land that have been planted as native grass fields, meadows, and fern terraces. Edibles are also introduced into them to enhance this idea. One of the most emblematic elements of the house is that is split in two by a thin ramp that cuts into the forest. This ramp is elongated in each direction creating a spine which organizes the entire program. It creates access into the house and give the owner an opportunity to walk the entire property.

Bedford House

Bedford Corners, NY, 2009- 2011 Collaboration with Balmori Associates and Joel Sanders Architect - Schematic Design package, Construction Administration, Publicity For this renovation of a 1950’s house in the town of Bedford, we created a scheme that weaves interior and exterior as well as Main House and Pool House together by juxtaposing materials, surface, and planting. Inside the house’s cedar-clad darker perimeter shell is a refined folded surface made of custom concrete, exterior pavers, and drywall. This internal surface links the multi-leveled interior space and extends the inside out to the Pool House in the back, where it exposes itself fully as a dramatic folded concrete structure. Linking architecture to landscape is a stacked bluestone wall that brackets the Pool House in the lush surrounding landscape. I created the SD drawing set that ultimately became the set that was used for the construction of the landscape.

RFQ and RFP submissions

2009 - current Collaboration with Balmori Associates With Balmori Associates I have put together and submitted over 100 RFQs, PPQs and RFP submittals which have resulted on a large number of successful shortlists and new projects for the firm. I have put together teams that included firms such as Zaha Hadid Architects, BIG, WORKac, Allied works, SHOP architects, ARUP, Buro Happold as well as other architects, engineers, and specialty consultants such as lighting and public outreach. My tasks required me to find provocative proposals, to reach out to firms that we would like to team up with and to gather qualifications, fees and key strategies from each of the players. Along with the directors of the firm and members of the team we develop design intents for the site that are incorporated into the submission. We look at key projects that illustrate that intention, and I put together everything into a cohesive document. Depending on the requirements of the RFQ, sometimes I also need to submit forms that are included in appendixes.

BALMORI ASSOCIATES RE-ENERGIZES THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO WITH THEIR PROPOSAL PUBLIC POWER PARK Solar Installation on UB’s North Campus April 2010

Buffalo, NY - Last month the university of Buffalo with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) sent out an invitation to 20 artists to compete for the design of a new ‘Solar Park’, approximately six acres with the largest solar installation on any college or university campus in New York State and one of the largest on any campus in the United States. The installation was required to use 5,000 solar panels within a landscape to produce energy for the student housing. Balmori Associates with their proposal of “Public Power Park” was chosen as one of three finalists along with Walter Hood and Vito Acconci. Construction of the winning design is expected to begin in August.

BIG IDEAS: Proposals for the new West Side boulevard include Work Architecture's fanciful hills and...

Here's the first look at designs for a spectacular new boulevard and park planned for Manhattan's far West Side, where Mayor Bloomberg wants to build a new business district more than twice the size of the World Trade Center complex.

From fanciful images of hills, trails and plantings to a park filled with enormous evergreen trees and rock outcrops, the proposals from five teams of architects vying to design the park and boulevard will go before the public beginning today.

The project, part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment, will create four acres of park space down the middle of a boulevard stretching from 33rd to 42nd Streets, between 10th and 11th Avenues, and linking up with a massive new office and residential project planned for the West Side rail yard just to the south of the new avenue. "We are thrilled by the quality of the designs," said Ann Weisbrod, president of the Hudson Yards Development Corp., which is overseeing construction of the project and the financing of an extension of the No. 7 subway line to a new station at 11th Avenue and 34th Street. The winning design will be selected in early October, Weisbrod said. Construction of the first phase of the project, from 33rd to 36th streets, is expected be completed at the same time as the subway extension in 2013.

The now low-rise neighborhood was rezoned by the City Council several years ago to allow for up to 24 million square feet of office space and 13,500 new units of housing, along with hotels and retail development.

1 0 3

The entire project - construction of the subway, boulevard, plaza and other infrastructure work - is being paid for with $3 billion in bonds. "This is the extension of Midtown, the preeminent business district in the world," said Weisbrod.

The designs will be on public display at the Center for Architecture, at 536 La Guardia Place, from Sept. 25 through the end of October. tom.topousis@nypost.com

Social Media and Blogs

2009 - Current Collaboration with Balmori Associates Facebook / Twitter / Website I launched the Balmori Associates Facebook page and titter account that has over 1000 followers and help design the new website with interactive features. Building and Urban Living Room - Creating a temporary media platform for public space The project of the Urban Living Room began in the neighborhood of the Meatpacking District in New York. This historical neighborhood has undergone various transformations with the decline of industrial uses: The Highline Park opened a new Whitney Museum of American Art will open in 2012.. In the summer of 2009 the Meatpacking District Initiative commissioned Balmori Associates to propose a new design for the public spaces that the DOT (Department Of Transportation) had previously assigned for pedestrian use. Using a non traditional method, we set up an online forum with live video feed and though twitter using the site and invited the public along with landscape architect Erik de Jong, and 40 Dutch students to discuss urban public space.. We extended the conversation to the neighborhood of our office by participating in New York festival for contemporary psychogeography, “Conflux City 2009”, and we also made a video that could be shown in various online blogs. In June of 2010 Balmori Associates took the Urban Living Room to Rome and provided the organization “Civico Zero / Save The Children Italia” with guidelines for the construction of an Urban Living Room. POST-IT Landscape Blog – an alternative marketing strategy for ‘ A Landscape Manifesto’ book “A Landscape Manifesto’ is a new book by Diana Balmori that presents her theory and practice of urban landscape design as an art that spans the divide between culture and nature. .This Manifesto - consisting of 25 points - advocates a new language for landscape, reflecting the shift in our understanding of nature and how it interacts with “the city”. We wanted to show that A Landscape Manifesto was much more than just a book to read and we intended to spark a conversation about the infinitely changeable nature of our world, and how we might affect positive transformation where we live, work, sleep and play. A starting point for discussion, Post-It Landscape blog invited you to submit a post it with a manifesto point and share it with the public.

Oaxaca is one of three states in Mexico where the rural population still outnumbers the urban population. With its centralized colonial-era capital city, nearby pre-Columbian archeological sites and numerous indigenous communities, the region is an area of great geographical and biological diversity that comprises high mountain cloud forests, tropical rainforests, arid central valleys and the Pacific Coast. Oaxaca’s population is roughly 40% under the age of 15. Oaxaca’s migration patterns suggest a substantial employment drain to other Mexican states, the US and Canada (60% of Oaxaca’s working age population). “NOOKS” For Dome Colony X in the Saint Gabriels

New York, NY, 2010 Collaboration with Balmori Associates and Fritz Haeg - Designer The piece that we produced for the “Dome Colony in the San Gabriel’s“, for Fritz Haeg’s two month long exhibition at the X Initiative Art Space was a way of playing with seating and planting. Envisioned as dynamic space and furniture piece; in form, it is a garden that engages the Colony. It is not only designed for visitors to move and play with, it is a social community space that invites them to linger, and just be. Using this as a premise the units allow you to make nooks where one person can be alone, or some can be for two or a large group. We named the experiment “nooks” for this reason. The secondary idea grafted on this was if plants could be incorporated into the system. This time they are shown conceptually by providing paper flowers that people can plant in the space. The Garden narrates a story of landscape taking over and expanding over the Public Space, therefore changing the way that the space is perceived and read by the user. The users that “plant” flowers in it, transform it with time.

ReNEWable Times Square Competition

New York, NY, 2010 Collaboration with Maura Rockcastle, Jeremy Wyatt Linzee, Ivan Hernandez Quintela, and Emilie Lucie Baltz - Competition design team Manager “Corn Is The Color Of My Cab The premise of our design recognizes that the vision for the pedestrian areas is inextricably woven with art and the design of public space- each needs the other to succeed and in turn something new is created through strengthening the connection between these parts. It is ultimately a story of corn that set the course and form of the Broadway Corridor we know now- from trail to farm to street to city. It begins with the Lenape Indians, the first inhabitant of Times Square, whose main crop was corn, and goes forward to the delirious intensity of crowds, images, lights and traffic of today. This visual connection is intended to create consciousness about how corn makes up the majority of the signage in Times Square and the crisis of our native crops. Through the iconic yellow color of the New York cab - the most easily seen from afar, we allow the corn kernels to create a pixilated grid on the ground that is seen as topography from above. If we were to allow the yellow paint to make something that we see every day suddenly disappear, taxis would be the neutral condition, in the same way that corn has faded into the background of our everyday objects.

“Eat Your Vegetables” Edible JELL-O Flash Cards for Kids

New York, NY,2010 Collaboration with Robert Truitt and Ngoc Mihn Ngo - Designer This project takes a critical look at the digital age, consumerism and the empowerment of education that are influencing children today, It takes an iconic everyday object like the iphone and transforms it physically and programmatically into an edible JELL-O flashcard that teaches kids to eat vegetables. Hoping that as a result of a positive association with the JELL-O, the project will allow them to try vegetables that they would otherwise never try. The mold itself is a case from an old iphone model. With the recent release of the new iphone, and society’s desire to always have the latest technology, we predict that thousands of these cases will become useless to the users that have bought the new phone. So the mold is now a found object, reused and given a new purpose. The JELL-O molded into this is meant to question the role of technology. The JELL-O not only becomes a medium but a vehicle for giving kids a healthy helping of vegetables ( mixed with fruit). The card’s protective screen holds the name and image of the vegetable as it appears in a garden so that the child can have a positive association with it and begin to identify it. We will be creating a “carrot “flash card and a “beet” flashcard.

Living Chandelier

Brooklyn, NY 2010 Collaboration with Terreform1 through TerreFarm - Designer TerreFarm Design+Grow Summer Lab is a one week workshop that takes place at the Metropolitan Exchange Building in Brooklyn, NY. Every year 35 students and professionals from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning, art, media and science are chosen to create new prototypes for Urban agriculture. TerreFarm Lab seeks to rethink the city, in both its forms and its life, by reflecting new levels of sustainability. During the lab three projects were created to replace an old skylight with a Living Chandelier or hanging garden that can produce food. Using found materials prototypes were made and fabricated by hand using basic tools. A green house was build on top of the skylight to give it more height. An white electrical cable net was woven and filled hung from the top to be filled with plants that could hang from its pockets. Bladders out of marine shrink wrap plastic were assembled in an organic fashion to hold lettuces and leafy plants that could be connected via tubes to another water bag. A line of lightweight mirrors weighed with construction plumbs dangle down and reflect the sun light. The projects hang from a polley system that can regulate their height and allow for maintenance and harvesting.
