DONOR IMPACT REPORT

USHERING IN THE FUTURE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC

The 2021-22 academic year marked the close of one chapter and the beginning of the next. We are proud to share that, despite the lingering complexity of COVID-19 and the need to protect our community, we have persevered and delivered on all the major objectives laid out five years ago in our strategic plan, Blueprint:100.

With the new CIM Tuition Promise, CIM has frozen tuition for all students for the full term of their degrees – allowing students to pursue their dreams. This sets us apart from our peers as the only school to make this commitment. We know we must do more, but this promise is already making a real difference to our students and their success.

The 2021-22 academic year also saw the launch of a project many years in the making: the Academy at CIM. Elementary and middle school students in Northeast Ohio can now access the same high level of musical training in which the CIM Conservatory specializes, through a comprehensive curriculum and focused foundational training in a creative and collaborative environment.

In 2022, CIM took full ownership of the 1609 Hazel student housing and practice complex, completing a multi-year plan to guarantee our autonomy and ability to meet student housing needs in perpetuity. Also, plans for the rejuvenation of Kulas Hall came into focus. With a renovation task force in place and an expert design team assembled, a path has been laid for a ground-breaking in mid-2023. These two milestones complemented significant investment in our facilities and learning environment over the past several years, with new practice rooms and pianos and various other upgrades to our facilities and systems.

CIM’s classrooms and concert halls were as busy as ever. As you will discover in the following pages, exciting activity took place not only on our stages but also in every place we worked to fulfill our educational, artistic, community involvement and diversity mandates.

This incredible year was capped with a celebratory Honors Convocation, Commencement and Luminaries Benefit Concert – an event made all the more special for our students and graduates by the presence of honorees Michelle Cann, Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, Jennifer Koh, Joe and Ellen Thomas, and the family of Ryan Anthony.

Thank you to each of you who makes up the CIM community. Your passion, commitment and care constitute the heart of CIM and continue to inspire. It is our honor and privilege to serve as we work together to write the next chapter of our storied Institute.

CIM AS A PLACE OF LEARNING

CIM took our quest to usher in the future of classical music in exciting new directions last year. With the launch of a writing center and new general education requirements and courses, we overhauled the way we prepare students for modern musical careers. As part of that effort, CIM drew even closer to longtime partner Case Western Reserve University, bolstering and expanding our Joint Music Program. All the while, CIM students continued winning jobs and succeeding in competitions. Generous gifts endowing scholarships, including an Orchestral Career Fellowship, paved the way for generations of aspiring young players.

CIM AS AN ARTISTIC POWERHOUSE

CIM pursued an ambitious artistic agenda last fiscal year, even as the pandemic continued to pose challenges. We welcomed as our new director of orchestral studies Carlos Kalmar, the renowned music director of the Grant Park Music Festival. CIM Opera Theater triumphed over adversity with a high-tech film production of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. The same group also brought to the stage A Pocketful of Operas, four short new operas penned by CIM students. Last but far from least, all at CIM were delighted to witness the return of live audiences.

CIM AS A COMMUNITY PARTNER

CIM addressed the needs of its community with a wave of new or newly expanded service programs. Responding to the critical issue of hunger, CIM students organized and presented a Music for Food Benefit Concert that raised almost $20,000 for the Cleveland Kosher Food Pantry. The pandemic complicated our robust community concerts program, but students still found safe, rewarding ways to perform for their neighbors throughout Northeast Ohio. The year also saw CIM’s Black Student Union presenting a benefit concert and CIM students working in Cleveland public school classrooms, augmenting music instruction and developing relationships with students ranging from kindergartners to high-school seniors contemplating a future in music.

CIM AS A FORCE FOR INCLUSION

CIM remained serious about changing the face of classical music at every level. At the young end of the spectrum, we welcomed a new class of Musical Pathway Fellows. Older students then spent an intensive three weeks on campus last summer, when CIM hosted the Sphinx Performance Academy, copresented by the Sphinx Organization. Lastly, for adults, CIM advanced diversity in classrooms and executive offices with the inaugural Future of Music Faculty Fellowship, which connects Black and Latinx professionals and prepares them for academic careers.

Although CIM continued to navigate operational challenges driven by COVID-19 over the 2022 fiscal year, prudent financial management led to our 27th consecutive balanced budget. As articulated in our Blueprint:100 strategic plan, our long-range focus remains on a reduced school size, lower net cost of attendance and increased scholarship support for our talented students.

With such a strong financial position, CIM achieved an investment-grade bond rating from Standard & Poors (S&P), allowing us to issue debt through the State of Ohio, which then allowed CIM to strategically acquire our student residence facility, 1609 Hazel, and provide partial funding for the upcoming Kulas Hall renovation project. Over the next decade, we aim to continue reducing the cost of attendance for our students. Currentyear average net cost is just above $32,000, representing a 17% reduction since 2017.

Impressively – but not surprisingly – CIM’s donors were strong and steady in their support over the past year, making gifts to the annual fund that provided a vital bulwark during an uncertain year. Total contributions set an all-time high annual fund result, raising $2.45 million to reach our goal, while adding $561,000 to the endowment.

Our endowment draw remained steady at $2.5 million, while our endowment weathered tough economic conditions and a negative turn in the stock market, posting a market value of $50 million as of June 30, 2022.
