President’s Letter

I can feel the more than one hundred pairs of eyes staring at me. I guess they’re trying to figure me out. I don’t look like them; I carry a few extra pounds around my waist and my clothes are clean. Why am I here, in the crowded streets of a foreign country that has dealt with devastation we can only imagine? Why Haiti? I’ll tell you why. Because of Maur Hill-Mount Academy.

I have been at MH-MA for three years now. I have learned that this place has an effect on people. The Benedictine spirituality passed down from the monks and sisters over the years affects us. Usually, one of the things we learn is that each of us is called to help others. It is our responsibility to reach out to those in need. We need to be Christ to the world. We learn that giving of ourselves becomes our way of living. In a world filled with a “me” mentality, the giving of our time, talent, and treasure stands out as counter-cultural. And this way of life is a difference-maker.

You see, I went to Haiti because we are adjusting our service hour requirement for our students. Next year, instead of collecting service hours through a myriad of ways that may or may not be true service, students instead will have an opportunity to take part in a mission (either in America or abroad) or service project. These experiences will certainly help people in need. More importantly, they will change our students because of the experience of self-gift. I know that when our students encounter true Christian service, their lives are impacted. I was fortunate enough to spend time with Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta on several occasions. I spent years working side-by-side with many of her sisters, the Missionaries of Charity. My life was changed because of the daily service to the poor and experiencing how the sisters lived. I watched Mother Teresa reach out to the poor with such pure love that every person, whether Catholic or not, was drawn to her. It was transformational and I am different because of it. So next year, our students will get the chance to serve in a way that will impact both themselves and others. Part of the plan will be to have our parents join our students on the mission trips (talk about a memorable experience for our families). If you’ve had a great missionary or service experience, please share it with us. If you would like to help our mission trips or projects, contact us. On another note, Maur Hill-Mount Academy continues down a great path. Through social media you’ve probably seen the success our scholar’s bowl team and other academic groups have had this year. Athletically, our teams continue to improve. Enrollment keeps growing, students continue to be accepted to prestigious universities, and the campus looks more beautiful each day. Finally, the John Flynn Athletics Campaign looks to reach its goal in under a year thanks to the help of many alumni(ae). Please keep us in your prayers as we begin our missionary work in Haiti and other places. And may all of you Ravens continue to transform the world. God bless,

Bob Goalby Golf Open Graduation League of St. Maur Annual Dinner Homecoming Lights of Love

Lights of Love Celebration

The Lights of Love tradition, held annually to begin the advent season, was December 9, 2012. The beautiful tribute to loved ones living and deceased, featured outside luminaries, lighted Christmas trees and a candle light procession to begin the Liturgy. Tom Jacobs MHP 1972, a recording artist and composer, lead the music for the Eucharistic celebration. The Benedictine Sisters decorated a tree that celebrated their sesquicentennial year. Christmas trees were also decorated by the student members of the four houses at Maur Hill-Mount Academy. The house system was created several years ago to replace the student council system. All students belong to one of the four houses: St. Sebastian, Mother Teresa, Gabriel or St. George.

That evening, a Jesse tree was highlighted, which symbolizes the season of Advent and the wait for the Messiah. At the Offertory of the Mass, Mary Ann (Tabor) Nass ’47, and Aggie (Schuele) Asher ’74, placed ornaments on the Jesse tree. A wine and cheese reception followed in the academic building and was hosted by members of the Parents Club. Alumni and friends were able to honor a loved one with names collected into a remembrance book and with an ornament on the remembrance Christmas tree. The names of the honorees were read during the Mass. Family members were welcomed to take home their personalized ornaments. This Advent tradition which began in 1987 at Mount Saint Scholastica Academy shines on. Photos by Jordan Fry

Homecoming 2012

...Each year, a new class of freshman students is welcomed to campus, and with each passing year, we are reminded of the legacy left by all the students that have come before them. For many of you, your high school days may have been among the best experiences of your life. Was it the Mount’s Mission Benefit Dance or time spent in the Roost? Maybe it was the tennis court games and dance, intramurals, Sadie Hawkins, the bonfire, or being a staff member of Camp St. Maur. This year’s homecoming brought back many alumni to celebrate the great friendships formed during high school. MH-MA students enjoyed spirit week

6

activities with the theme “Olympic Games.” The student homecoming featured an exciting football game. The Ravens took pride in winning the homecoming game for the first time in eight years. We were glad to welcome so many who came back to celebrate with us. For the second year, the tailgate party was held at the patio of St. Michael’s Cafeteria on Friday evening. New this year was the John Flynn Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday morning that drew 38 teams benefiting MH-MA and the Heart of America Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Anniversary classes reunited and enjoyed food, photos and music with their classmates in the gymnasium. All took home commemorative shot glasses. Thanks for joining us and celebrating the legacy and traditions that unite us as...

The Fr. Edwin Watson Award John and Mary Van Dyke

Great people don’t seek to be great. They don’t pursue fame and notoriety. They go about their duties with quiet energy and great enthusiasm. John and Mary Van Dyke are those kind of people. John Van Dyke’s passion for sports was evident at an early age. He lettered in three sports throughout high school and graduated from St. Benedict’s College in 1966. He then began teaching and coaching at Sacred Heart Grade School in Atchison. In 1968, John became a State Farm Insurance Agent and continued to coach city league basketball players and American Legion baseball teams. He sponsored a slow pitch softball team every summer. When Atchison Recreation discontinued football in 1979, John initiated the State Farm Steelers program for area middle school players. The community support for the team continued for 31 years with annual golf tournaments and fundraising events. “Let’s Go Now” was a commonly used phrase by Coach Van Dyke that would be heard at practices each fall as players from different schools signed up to learn the skills of football and teamwork. Practices and games were social events and usually drew a large crowd of avid supporters. From 1994-96 John served as the varsity girls coach at MSSA and as the freshman basketball coach at Maur Hill from 1996-2000. Mary Cochran Van Dyke graduated from Atchison High School and Benedictine College with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education. She taught 5th grade at Atchison Catholic Intermediate School for eight years. After completing a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology and Research from the University of Kansas, Mary developed the model for Gifted and Talented children in Atchison schools. She served top-ability students from public and private schools for 36 years. John and Mary were married at Sacred Heart Church by Father Valerian Berger. They have been long standing supporters of the Atchison community, Maur Hill Prep, Mount St. Scholastica Academy and MH-MA. They are the parents of 6 children, John Jr., David, Mary Beth, Tim, Sara, and Andrea. They have seven grandchildren. For the better part of three decades, John and Mary sent their children to Maur Hill Prep and Mount St. Scholastica Academy. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2010 with a blessing by Father Owen, OSB, at Mary’s Grotto on the Benedictine campus with a dinner reception. John and Mary are members of St. Benedict’s Church and assist with the Loaves and Fishes food service in the community. John is a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as the Grand Knight for three years. John and Mary received the Cross of the Order of St. Benedict for exemplary community service in 2006. They are Booster Club members for Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Benedictine College. We are grateful for the inspiring work of this outstanding couple and are proud to honor them with the 2012 Fr. Edwin Watson, OSB Award.

New Camp on Campus For years, the youth ministers in the Kansas City area took kids to a summer camp near St. Louis. Three years ago, the camp was hit by a tornado and was forced to close. Looking for a new campsite, the youth ministers approached MH-MA President, Phil Baniewicz. He encouraged them to start a new camp on the MH-MA campus, and they did. The temporarily named “Edge Camp” began in the summer of 2011 with 67 campers. Last summer, there were 80 middle school students. The camp is supported by the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and is run by youth ministers of the diocese. This is the first camp to grace the MH-MA campus since Camp St. Maur! The new camp at MH-MA maintains many similar characteristics of Camp St. Maur. Students come to campus to build strong friendships with friends in a fun atmosphere; it also provides entertainment for the youth during the summer. Now, the camp is a co-ed summer camp, which (along with building friendships) strives to build a strong faith foundation for the youth. Seeing success in this new camp, the Archdiocese of Kansas City began searching for a permanent name to represent the camp to its fullest. The change came about

Photos provided by Camp Savio

because the Archdiocese of Kansas City wants other area diocese to feel welcome to join in on the camp experience, and the new name would also distinguish the camp from the diocese’s middle school program called “Edge.” According to Diane Pickert, camp director, the name “Camp Savio” was chosen because St. Dominic Savio represents certain qualities the camp leaders were seeking for the camp, such as a love for young people and the desire for them to live good lives. Activities at Camp Savio include team-building games, a mud pit, obstacle courses, and what would a camp be without canoeing on Lake Placid? The first year’s theme “Radiant Joy” taught campers that when you are strong in yourself and God, you are happy. The 2012 theme “Fearless” showed that trust and confidence in God helps us to meet life’s challenges. The summer 2013 schedule has expanded to two sessions, promising an action-packed week full of adventure, spirituality, prayer, and sacraments. Camp St. Maur lives on through Camp Savio! For more information on Camp Savio, please visit www.campsavio.com.

Author of Children’s Music Book Visits Students

On March 5th, students and faculty of Maur Hill-Mount Academy, got first hand experience in Cuban culture. Dr. Mirna Y. Cabrera, DMA was born in Cuba in 1968 before moving to the United States. She has taught music at all levels including groups like the Austin’s Children’s Choir, a nonprofit organization Mirna Cabrera for youth in Austin to foster her lifelong Photo by Sean Falk love of music. In 2008, she published a book and a CD of Cuban Children’s songs called A la Rueda, Rueda: Traditional Latin American Folk Songs for Children. The book emphasizes singing and games as a fundamental part of a child’s development. MH-MA students from both the Spanish and Music departments had a chance to hear her speak throughout the week. She taught songs from her book and taught the

students proper Spanish pronunciation. She also worked with the Mass choir in preparation for an upcoming Mass. Von Huber, senior, said, “It was a really great experience working with her. We got to experience a different culture first hand, and I felt like our performance was really good.” Spanish teacher Manuel Patino really enjoyed Dr. Cabrera’s presentation. “I thought she did an awesome job presenting material. She was prepared, and it was a great opportunity for students to learn about folklore and music,” Patino said.

Students Display Artwork in Local Gallery Continuning a twentyyear tradition, the Muchnic Art Gallery hosted an art show in honor of Sr. Helen Buening, OSB. Sr. Helen joined the sisters at the Mount on June 30, 1935 Photo by Sean Falk and made her final profession on January 1, 1940. She was a former art teacher for ACES (Atchison Catholic Elementary School) and began working at the Mount beginning in 1937. She continued teaching art to the area Catholic schools and college until 1979. Sr. Helen Buening started the Sister Helen Art Show for the children around Atchison about twenty years ago. Courtney Laurie, MH-MA Librarian and longtime friend of Sister Helen, recalls, “She was always very encouraging, and she showed her faith through her artwork.” Sister Helen also started the “Art Ladies,” a group of students who used to present famous artworks to

area schools. She was also involved in much of the artistic aspects of Atchison. Sister Rosann Eckert states, “Sister Helen wanted to open people’s eyes to the beauty of the world. She is a very gentle loving woman who loves beauty.” The art show features artwork from the area schools, including ACES, MH-MA, as well as the Atchison and Effingham public schools. The open house was March 3, and the art continued to be on display throughout the rest of the month. This year, MH-MA displayed twenty students’ artwork. MH-MA students had an entire room for their artwork and shared one wall with the Atchison Catholic Elementary School. Sophomore Courtney Lund received first place for her artwork “The Wave.” Sophomore Emily Lund and freshman Lina Lee both received second place for their artwork as well. If you want to find out more about the art show, contact Deborah Geiger at atchisonart@gmail.com. Geiger currently runs the Muchnic gallery.

MH-MA Raven Athletics: A Year in Review

Photos by Chris Sinclair

Maur Hill-Mount Academy has seen a return to successful sports programs for both boys and girls during the 2012-13 school year. Beginning with the football program under the guidance of new head coach, Jermaine Monroe, momentum in the positive direction has grown. Under Coach Monroe, the team jumped off to a quick 4-2 start and then ran into a tough district schedule that included state runner-up Silver Lake. Despite these three losses, the football team set the stage for future victories. The soccer team finished with a winning record against a loaded schedule that included Topeka High and Bishop Ward. Coach Manny Patino has his teams playing their best at the end of the year when it counts. Our volleyball team finished in the top two of the DVL North Division for the third straight year. Coach Mallory Pickman ’05 will not be returning, and Kim Wohlgemuth Taylor ’87 will take over the helm.

Our girls’ basketball team increased their victory total by five games from last year with Head Coach Brad Kunecke returning to the sideline after completing a previous successful stint in the same position. Coach Courtney Edmonds and Coach Rebecca Kelly led the JV girls to a very good 10-5 mark. Veteran boys’ coach Tim Van Dyke ’86 had another successful campaign in his 19th season with the school. The Ravens finished with a solid 13-8 record. Also competing during the winter landscape was a group of six wrestlers who joined Atchison High in a coop agreement during the regular season. Senior Cody Calhoon capped off a brilliant career with a 31-6 record and a state medal. It was his second straight appearance at State. We are excited about the future of Raven athletics at Maur Hill-Mount Academy.
