Director, Help Age India, Puducherry showed a video clipping on how they serve and help the old people at Help Age India. The function ended grandly with more than 200 delegates participating in the CME Programme with the following take home information. ‘In the next few years, for the first time, there will be more people in the world aged over 60 years than children aged less than five. By 2050, 80% of the world’s older people will be living in low and middle income. At present, WHO is calling for urgent attention to ensure that, at a time when the world’s population is ageing rapidly, people reach old age in the best possible health. That’s the theme for World Health Day 2012: Good health adds life to years. Population ageing is a global phenomenon that is both inevitable and predictable. It will change society at many levels and in complex ways, creating both challenges and opportunities. On the other hand older people already make a significant contribution to society, whether it is through the formal workforce, through

hosted the “3rd Indian Pharmacology Society Conference (Puducherry Chapter)” on 18.10.2012. informal work and volunteering or within the family. Good health must lie at the core of any successful response to ageing. If we can ensure that people are living healthier as well as longer lives, the opportunities will be greater and the costs to society less. Numerous determinants of healthy and active ageing lie beyond the health system. They also start to exert their influence at earlier stages in life. Our response, therefore, needs to tackle issues across the life course and in many social spheres. But the health sector, too, needs to adapt. Overwhelmingly the health challenges in older age are the consequence of particularly non-communicable diseases. We need to develop health systems which can provide the chronic care that these diseases and their risk factors require. Fostering good health in older age is central to the global response to population ageing. Poor health in older age is not just a burden for the individual but also for their families and for society as a whole. It is now up to the global community to take up the challenges it identifies and truly add life to our increasing years”.

Diagnosis revealed a fracture in the ball of the hips while the socket was intact. “We decided to replace the fractured ball with an artificial hip prosthesis. We took utmost care as operating patients older than 60 years may lead to complications, “said Dr.Ravichandran – This is the first hip replacement surgery on a centenarian in Puducherry, if not in Tamil Nadu. “The oldest patient we have operated was 99 years old before this surgery,” said Dr.Ravichandran who has performed about 700 hip and Knee replacement surgeries. army was disbanded in the 1940s. He has fought in battles in Burma, Singapore and Thailand. The centenarian served as a correspondent of a private school at Akasampatti village in Villupuram for 25 years before setting down in Puducherry. “He has been doing all his daily chores with out any assistance from others till the fall. Sundaram is hale and healthy, with no medical complication. This news is focused to create awareness among the public that Physiological age is not a criteria for denying a surgery and by taking a risk in such a situation is always advisable for better quality of remaining life in old age patient rather than bed ridden.

INJURIES OF LOWER URINARY TRACT – A holistic view “… It is the urologist who will have to share, with the patient the burden of any residual urological disability when the thoracic, the abdominal, and even the orthopaedic aspects are probably long forgotten” – Mr. Richard TurnerWarwick The term lower urinary tract denotes the bladder and urethra constituting the vesico-urethral unit which is well protected by bony and soft tissues being susceptible to injury only by external force in the form of blunt, penetrating or due to iatrogenic causes. It is commonly observed in R.T.A and fall from height. Basically injuries to the bladder can be divided into: (1) extra peritoneal (with or without involvement of bladder neck or posterior urethra) and (2) intra peritoneal due to blunt force in full bladder. Uncomplicated extraperitoneal bladder injuries are dealt with urethral catheter drainage for 14 days. Intra peritoneal bladder rupture must be explored and repaired. Posterior urethral injury (prostatic and membranous urethra) associated with pelvic injury is currently termed as pelvic fracture urethral distraction defects (PFUDD)

Anterior urethral injury (penile – pendulous urethra and bulbar urethra) can also occur due to different type of impacts like cuts, gunshots, iatrogenic etc, which can be managed as per the broad principle mentioned above.

Learning Issues

1. When facilities in terms of radio-diagnosis, surgical expertise are not available, S.P diversion would be the ideal choice. 2. Stricture, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction are rather the rule than a mere chance, which mostly depends on the severity of injury. 3. Prudent primary decision averts the morbidity - leaving the sequela, appropriately manageable

STUDENTS FOREVER- Fedorranz We would like to thank Shri. M. K. Rajagopalan, the Chancellor of SBV University & Prof. D.R. Gunasekaran, our esteemed Vice Chancellor, for their encouragement and support. We would also like to thank Prof. G. Muthurangan, our beloved Dean for his incredibly positive mindset and friendly attitude in listening to and executing our ideas and also Prof. M. Varadarajan, the Medical Superintendent, for his valuable guidance. We would like to specially thank Dr. Partha Nandi, Associate Professor in Community Medicine & Staff Advisor, for being a friend and philosopher, who helped us gear up with all that’s required to be an executive batch and a good one at that. Our batch stands united in thanking Dr. Nandi for always being there for us, come-what-may! We, the batch of 2009-10 (Fedorranz), were always hitherto seen as a batch with a lot of talent and immense potential. And when it was August, we knew it was crunch time. Time for us to perform and outlive tags like ‘potential’ and ‘talent’ & give our best shot at being the executive batch. Thus, on the 4th of August, the Students’ Council was sworn in with 20 members. From the outset, we were determined to make an indelible impression in MGMC’s history by being a batch with a difference and more importantly, with a friendly attitude towards other batches. Here is a list of the major happenings after we the Fedorranz took over the Students Council headship.

6th August, 2012: Freshers Orientation Program

In came the baby juniors and with them, our first task at hand – to organise the orientation program. The program was meant to ensure that the fresher’s have a smooth and cheerful start to the course. The dignitaries spoke on discipline, the excellent facilities at the campus, learning atmosphere and anti-ragging policy of our college. A member of the Students’ Council spoke on behalf of us and allayed all fears of ragging and vowed to be friendly and guide the juniors whenever they approached us. The Vice Chancellor thanked the executive batch for doing a good job and even joked that we don’t have the right to rag the juniors as we ourselves were never ragged. An interactive session was also organized to clear doubts of parents and the freshers.

7th - 11th August, 2012: Adrena 2012

The first intercollegiate cultural festival we attended (with Fedorranz as the executive batch) was ‘Adrena 12’ at Sri Venkateshwara Medical College & Hospital, Pondicherry. It was like a loud announcement of sorts that the Fedorranz have arrived – as we swept through the fest with the highest number of awards. We won the rolling trophies in Literature & Debate (including several prizes in individual categories), Dramatics, Fashion Show, Music and Football. Also we won the overall trophy as the best college at the fest.

15th August, 2012: Independence Day

The 66th Independence Day was celebrated with a sense of pride all around. Our beloved Dean, Prof. G. Muthurangan
