EDITORIAL Medical Profession is recognized as a noble profession; this is a tag which was earned by centuries of dedication and selfless service to humanity by thousands and thousands of medical men and women who have dedicated their entire life to the field of medicine to the truest of the possible level. With the advent of modern technology the medical profession has transcended to enormous unimagined heights. It becomes the responsibility of modern medical schools to inculcate modern medical principles using the best of the advanced teaching methods thereby preparing a generation of young doctors to compete with the greater world and at the same time priming them about the greatness of the profession and its core concept, of service to humanity. Technology and instrumentation has become indispensible items in modern hospitals, still the human touch which glues the doctor and the patient can never to exchanged with the machines alone, this calls for a careful refinement in the process of medical education balancing all the elements to the best of its capability. Reaching the stars but still placing the feet firmly on the ground beneath is the prime task facing the modern medical curriculum designers. SCIENCE SENSE PROBLEM BASED LEARNING (PBL) FOR THE STUDENTS - An effective tool in Medical education: The traditional format of lecturing, the ancient method of teaching, is still the preferred method of teaching in medical education. Pedagogical research shows a dip in attention within 10–20 min into such a lecture, mainly due to the passive role played by the students, thus making them unsuitable for higher levels of learning such as analysis and application. And also, the focus on theoretical aspects of topics and the lack of an holistic approach have resulted in poor diagnostic and therapeutic skills. In this context, the concept of interactive seminars with problem-based learning (PBL) has come into role now. PBL is structured according to the educational principles obtained from the adult learning theory and is believed to impart effective clinical reasoning skills. For medical education, this consists of a clinical case, where the students discuss the patient symptoms and physical findings and give explanations for the cause of the clinical features. An interactive format raises the student’s role from passive recipients to active contributors to the learning process, thus increasing quality of attention and motivation to self learning. The exposure provided to practical problems and their solution encourages students to develop decisionmaking skills and a greater interest in patient management and treatment. Interactive seminars are preferred over the routine lectures by students and with the incorporation of audio-visual aids, animation and PBL; the learning process may be made more effective and enjoyable for the students.
