PASSION, ART, TECHNOLOGY: THE BRAND’S VALUES Passion is knowing one’s work intimately, it is a love that surpasses the wall of business, it is the ability to create, judge, and live workmanship as a living part of being human, a lifestyle. Art is the ability of telling a story through your own products, like a camera for a movie director. Art and culture have always been the prerogatives of our city, Florence. Technology is inventiveness, inspiration, and patent. It is the ability to innovate, to change. It is movement opposed to stability; it is the courage to try getting back into the game, but also to know how to produce a true quality product of value. Leonardo da Vinci is our mentor and patents are our witnesses.

PITTI IMMAGINE

THE ITALIAN FAIRS AND EVENTS FOR FASHION. LIFESTYLE & CULTURE. 12 /BUYER MAGAZINE/

Pitti Uomo (June 14 – 17, 2016) has reached its 90th Edition and has staked everything on numbers. Pitti Lucky Numbers will in fact be the leitmotif of this important men's fashion event: 1220 brands of which 536 are international, with an estimated 30,000 visitors expected and at least 9000 foreign buyers. Installations with the number theme will welcome the Pitti public, with performances and events that are sure to make this global fashion feature happening even more exclusive. This event opens on the evening of June 13 at Palazzo Pitti, with a gala dinner inspired by the beginnings of Italian fashion, born in this setting more than sixty years ago. On this occasion, there will be the official launch of the three-year agreement of effective and cultural collaboration between Centro Moda, Pitti Immagine through the Pitti Discovery Foundation and the Uffizi Galleries, to a plan three major exhibitions

that will combine Art and Fashion. The first will take place in eleven rooms of Palazzo Pitti including the legendary Sala Bianca with 200 photos of Karl Lagerfeld for “Vision on Fashion” running until October 23. A packed calendar of fashion shows and events: the long-awaited fashion shows by Raf Simons who returns to the Florence show after leaving Dior; the Fausto Puglisi, Lucio Vanotti and Russian, Gosha Rubchinsky fashion shows will take place on June 16 in the enchanting ambience of Manifattura Tabacchi. What’s more: Japanese Hiroki Nakamura with the VIsvim brand will show at the Limonaia del Rosso in the Boboli gardens, flooded by natural early morning light. An important happening for Cartier who chose Palazzo Gondi for a four-day international event to launch a new watch and consolidate its menswear collections. Finally, Polimoda will celebrate its 30-year anniversary with a fashion show at Palazzo Strozzi, as well as Classic Italy that will also be celebrating its 30th anniversary of Made in Italy successes.

The Milan WHITE Show has established itself over the years as the international showcase of contemporary fashion, but also as an ideal place to meet and as a launching pad for young designers, artists and fashion designers. With the upcoming Women's Pre-collections + Menswear Edition in June (June 18 – 20, 2016), Buyer Magazine met with the creator of WHITE, Massimiliano Bizzi to discuss the past, present and near future of his creation. Mr. Bizzi, what sparked the idea for WHITE? «I wanted to create something beauti-

ful for Milan. A trade fair that would of course be a place of trade yet one that would also propose a beautiful pleasant lively atmosphere with the proper staging and image. My idea was to establish a veritable entrepreneurial model with a modern, young and successful format». What formula made WHITE a winning project? «First of all, our guarantee is the enormous amount of work behind the scenes of WHITE. Currently our staff has about thirty permanent employees who deal exclusively with the organization of the event on a daily basis. The result is a unique brand that seeks out and then showcases the best contemporary international talents and projects. Decidedly, a Buyer-oriented policy that works, since each edition of WHITE attracts over 20,000 buyers of the most important brands in the world». WHITE is the only Italian show that presents both men’s collections and women’s pre-collections in June …

16 /BUYER MAGAZINE/

«As an extension of the Florence event, we try to reaffirm the centrality of WHITE during men’s fashion week by also including women's pre-collections to be increasingly competitive at the European preview level. Today, WHITE is the only Italian show that has focused on women's pre-collections with a dedicated event. In addition to presenting men’s and women’s pre-collections together, we were the first to offer small and medium-sized companies the opportunity to present their collections for men and

women within a single space, to optimise time and costs with the WHITE MEN’S COLLECTION + WOMEN’S PRE-COLLECTION formula». Who are the special guests of WHITE WOMEN’S PRE-COLLECTIONS +MENSWEAR going to be? «Once again this year we proudly present two truly prestigious and interesting companies. SEMICOUTURE for the women's pre-collections and the Chinese designer SANKUANZ for menswear. Two names that reflect the

show’s philosophy, which focuses on innovative, experimental companies that do not relinquish product quality and excellence. A Special event for the women's pre-collection will also be dedicated to designer Vivetta, who will present her Resort 17 pre-collection inspired by a Bohemian and sophisticated yet eclectic and surreal spirit».

uxury clothing for dogs, cats and horses. This is the core business of “4 Zampe & 1 Coda”, a Tuscan start-up company based in Carmignano (PO) that has launched innovative high end clothing for animals in the wake of renowned Made in Italy ingenuity. Nastasia Frattura, a young entrepreneur who began in the world of fashion is behind this idea driven by her great passion for animals: «4 Zampe & 1 Coda comes from my family’s characteristically deep love for animals. Our product is artisanal and is entirely made with high quality fabrics, all

sewn in an Italian haute couture workroom to guarantee a 100% Made in Italy product. Our creations are limited editions, as each collection is unique in its kind».

N

astasia designs a vast range of products: coats, raincoats, blankets, necklaces, and bandanas, where every size is taken into account, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. Each collection is unique and combines the quality and durability of materials with fanciful style for those who want to dress their loyal animal friends fashionably. For the Pitti Uomo 89 edition, 4 Zampe & 1 Coda presented an exclusive collection designed in collaboration with Giovanni Cipolla "Johnny Onion" the florentine tattoo artist, creating a raincoat and bandanas with tattoo designs for our 4-legged friends and matching cotton/silk foulards for their owners. The goal of 4 Zampe & 1 Coda is to place its collections in men and women’s clothing boutiques. In the meantime, the company’s e-commerce shop is already active and fully operational: www.4zampe1coda.it.

TOSCANA: MESTIERI E MODA

24 /BUYER MAGAZINE/

T

uscany has always been synonymous with elegance, allure, and creativity: it is no coincidence that millions of people come to visit every year, enchanted by its picturesque landscapes and the treasures it preserves in its cities, veritable open-air museums. But Tuscany has not only inspired and cultivated the great Renaissance artists: the same has occurred with hundreds of artisans who for centuries, have continued to create small masterpieces in their workshops. If you wander into Florence’s hidden streets, straying away from the tourist masses, you can still breathe in the ambiance of the botteghe of yesteryear. The skilful figure of the artisan brought together the artist's creativity and the calloused hands of the labourer, the inventiveness of Leonardo and deftness of the ciompi, paid Florentine textile workers. The bottega, with its strong smells and its harmonious chaos, emanated a solemnity and respect that brought together the most refined aristocrats with young workers who dreamed of working for the artisans to learn all the secrets of the trade. Florentine fashion and Made in Italy were born in these streets, amid brushes, looms, and hammers; many families passed on their experience, knowledge and trade secrets across the centuries: today's artisans have developed their art combining ancient knowledge and technological innovation, being able to face increasingly fierce competition and a progressively

more refined public. And the stylish women who stroll along Via Tornabuoni today are not so different from those ladies who, in the fourteenth century, strolled along Via Calzaiuoli! Today as then, Tuscany gives life to the most unexpected and enchanting combinations of Made in Italy, unique products known worldwide for their accurate workmanship and highly sought after quality. All well known companies, yet always capable of surprising us: just like the landscapes and artistic masterpieces of Tuscany. In these pages, we present some of the companies that, every day, continue to make our region special. We are not talking about simple “objects, but unique products. /BUYER MAGAZINE/

SARTORIA VANNI THE REVOLUTION OF MADE TO MEASURE GARMENTS

T

he 3.0 revolution for made to measure suits initiated in Florence. Everything began with a joint venture between two young Florentine lawyers, Oliver Scavetta and Nicola Papa, and the historic Sartoria Vanni in the figure of Fabrizio Vanni. Oliver and Nicola cast off their lawyer clothes and unleashed their passion for tailored suits projecting the Sartoria Vanni brand towards a hitech, revolutionary and international dimension. Because, let's face it, bespoke suits are amazing but it is increasingly difficult to combine daily engagements with the schedule and timing of a tailor's shop. This is where Oliver and Nicola come in with their idea, as brilliant as it is logical for the times we are living in. «Our clients only need to find the time to come to our showroom in Via dei Fossi in Florence once: in half an hour they will be measured from head to foot by our tailor.

The measurements are then put into the online database of our website (www.sartoriavanni.com) which clients can access with their username and password from any internet-connected device -- explain the two partners – after which the clients, by accessing their profiles, can order the desired made to measure suit online, choosing from over 1500 fabrics and deciding every single detail of their suits. The same service is also available for made to measure shirts, fully customizable: from the button to the collar». Sartoria Vanni ships to all five continents, while, for the more demanding clients, a travelling tailoring service is also available! Made in Italy by the book.

LUIGI & GUIDO TESI HATS THAT HAVE MADE HISTORY

H

istory intertwines with Italian artisanship, which creates exclusive hats that are appreciated worldwide. This, in short, is the prologue to the story of the Tesi company, a prestigious Florentine hat manufacturer whose origins date back to the mid-1800s. From a small workshop specialized in the trade and production of straw braids and hats to an internationally established company that produces for both fashion brands as well as its own label. The rise of the Tesi company has been as constant as it is fascinating and has survived economic booms, wars, modernity and dramatic changes. Building on its long-standing tradition, Tesi is a modern company capable of processing every type of material to make hat collections for men, women and children.

I

ts production is rich in expertise, steeped in the traditional artisan heritage of the Florence area in an ongoing quest to combine tradition and trends, without forgoing attention to detail and fashion. The models are all designed in-house, studying the latest style, colour, and material trends. In addition to traditional men’s classic and “All time favourite” styles on the market, the company supports ongoing research and application of continuously updated new models and styles that strive to capture the latest trends. Likewise, in the male sector, the company’s famous Panama hats best extol the interpretive skills of its artisans, combined with exotic materials in a wealth of fibres, patterns and colours that are superbly interpreted according to a sensitivity typical of the Tesi company. The women’s lines are certainly more creative: every collection is a surprise, where the Tesi brand designers indulge in the search for increasingly ambitious and fun shapes and trimmings. Tesi hats are distributed worldwide; the United States and Japan are the leading markets for the company.

Loretta Caponi opened her first store- workshop in 1967 in Borgo Ognissanti, in the heart of Florence. Her creations conquered the consent of a sophisticated and well-selected clientele that would form

the basis of an enterprise that would soon became a success. After a few years, the workshop-atelier of Loretta Caponi moved to its present location in Piazza Antinori. For several years now, it is her daughter Lucia Caponi who runs the business, having spent many years surrounded by embroidery in her mother’s workshop. «Our handmade linens tell the entire story of those who make them - says Lucia – This gives a soul to our products that are characterised by the exaltation of details. Our home and bath linens are designed according to our clients’ needs to even become part of their interior design, not just a mere accessory». The “Loretta Caponi” product range includes four lines: home, men, women and children. Textiles and yarns are in fact the most important production of the Prato territory, where the creative skills of local artisans have enabled the evolution of an art and a tradition that has never waned. The Prato industrial district is now one of the most important and largest in Europe. Increasingly new production strategies, techniques, and innovative models characterize the city of Prato with its 8,000 textile companies that constitute the city's industrial system.

C

hiffon, cotton, organza, silk, velvet, and lace are just a few of the types of textiles that Prato produces and distributes worldwide. This Tuscan city has played a starring role in textile production since the Middle Ages thanks to its water. The considerable water resources of the Prato area flow into the copious Bisenzio River, which already in the early Middle Ages, fed a dense system of canals, crucial to many of the wool processing phases. History and technical details are the focal point of the economic life of Prato that loves to recount the positive evolution of its soul, starting from the local area of greatest productive value: the former Cimatoria Campolmi. This factory, located just inside the medieval walls, now houses the Textile Museum, which aims to convey the true meaning of the local textile art and technology through an impressive collection of textiles from different periods and machinery of every kind.

46 /BUYER MAGAZINE/

The production, which includes small and medium-sized independent companies, foresees the specialization of each one in specific activities such as spinning, warping, weaving, dyeing and finishing, maintaining the same logical pattern of production already developed in the Middle Ages. Each company therefore becomes an important cog in the entire local production machine, which is activated in the early stages with research and sample design, on to processing and production, to end with the final marketing of the finished product. This is how Prato presents itself to the eyes of the world: a true city workshop where quality, excellence, and value go hand in hand with prompt delivery and competitive prices. From Milan to Paris, from Hollywood to Hong Kong, Prato cannot help being a place that inspires purchases by fashion designers, costume designers, artists and fashionistas from around the world, looking for textiles that are precious, exclusive and full of that vital breath that can only be found in Prato.

“F

riends, gold, and old wine are good for everything”– they say in Tuscany - and it is right in between a glass of wine and a chat that Tuscan artisans have always cultivated their art of excellence … the goldsmith’s art. Florence first affirmed itself as a goldsmith fulcrum in the Middle Ages, but it would be with the advent of the Renaissance that this activity acquired a full artistic connotation, flourishing in the vanity of ladies and gentlemen of renewed exuberant and eccentric tastes. This is how Renaissance Florence began seeing dresses with elaborate gold decorations that dazzled with a vital glimmer and exhilarating forms, dancing among the narrow city streets. Hence, the passion for all that glitters. The precious jewellery created by artisans become works of art to wear and show off with delight. The goldsmith botteghe start refining those techniques openwork, engraving, chiselling – that are now part of the centuries-old Florentine tradition of elite goldsmith’s art. The cradle of the Renaissance dressed itself up with unique rings, bracelets, earrings and pendants, shaped by patience, creativity and the steady hand of the artisans. But the secret of Tuscan goldsmith work does not end here as it finds its roots much earlier. It is in fact the Etruscans who, in Florence first and Arezzo later, inherited one of the most prestigious techniques, that of granulation: small gold spheres lined up one by one, enrich the jewellery with refined decorations of inestimable value. However, we cannot forget techniques like openwork and engraving, capable of giving the jewel an increasingly original style, making it a truly exclusive and prestigious creation. It would be Arezzo, at the beginning of the 1900s, to bring its artistic contribution to the goldsmith’s art. Also an heir to the traditional technique, Arezzo saw the development of laboratories increasingly specialized in the production of single pieces and small series of precious objects made with traditional techniques.

This is why the goldsmith’s art in Tuscany is still steeped in the depth of its history and synergy of the work in its cities: history and modernity are at the centre of a perfect circle that, thanks to the handiwork of excellent artisans, bring Tuscany outside of Tuscany itself. The region stands out as well for its refined taste and sophisticated attention to detail; prestige meets excellence and “Made in Tuscany” has become a tangible sign of the art of excellence now recognized worldwide.

AMEN THE MARRIAGE BETWEEN FAITH AND FASHION

A

n idea, in fashion as in life, often makes the difference. A striking example of this is the innovative Croce del Sud project, a start-up company founded in 2012 in Arezzo by Giovanni Licastro. As an entrepreneur in the jewellery field, he decided to literally join the sacred with the profane, thus creating AMEN, a line of jewellery for men and women inspired by Christianity, without sacrificing its fashionable element. «AMEN was created from the desire to share words of faith with loved ones, making them feel protected, loved, and never alone» - says Giovanni Licastro. A deep thought to wear and to show off as a kind of new evangelization starting from fashion.

T

his project is as ambitious as it is appreciated, given the steady progress of the AMEN collections on the market: over 2000 retailers in Italy, as well as those about to be announced abroad, and the online shop (www. amencollection.com). «This jewellery is creative, with close attention paid to every detail, from innovative magnetic clasps in stainless steel, to the embossed or engraved words, selection of materials - real leather, sterling silver – and colour coding» - continues Giovanni Licastro as he passionately describes his jewellery. The iconic AMEN article par excellence is its leather bracelet embossed with a prayer, as well as the exclusive branded rosary or rings engraved with words of faith. Silver, leather, zircons and wood are the raw materials primarily used for a rigorously Made in Italy production.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

T

his is a family-run business founded in Florence in 1954. The company’s history is characterised by its production of high quality leather accessories. The expertise gained in over half a century comes to life in its exclusive, handmade leather bags. To celebrate its 60 years of international activity, in 2015 this Florentine brand launched the Replica Collection: a 1950s inspired mini-bag with a hand-painted vintage decoration. A true homage to the company’s roots, attracting the attention of international buyers to its collections. Bags that are true masterpieces of Tuscan artisanship. Let’s go back to the “Replica” bag. It is a luxurious hand painted leather mini bag with gold leaf decorations using an original 1950s mould and hand press. The Replica bag is produced in a numbered series and in multiple colours, embodying the essence of the brand. These are products of excellence where the signs of true handmade artisanship are evident.

The brand has also recently launched its Heritage Collection. It is the result of extensive research and study about design, where every detail finds its own place and nothing is left to chance. The Heritage bags series is produced with exotic leathers and fine calfskin, ranging in seven different colours: the warmth of mango, the elegance of redwood, the intensity of brandy and marc, the versatility of sand and mud, and of course, universal black. Available in two lines, the collection includes Boston Bags, mini clutches, and hobo bags. The leitmotif of the Heritage collection is a central gold leaf band decorated with the signature floral pattern of the brand. Bags that are true symbols of excellence, in perfect balance between the memory of the past and the vision of the future

RECHARGING BATTERIES WITH STYLE

W

e are talking about a typical artisan leather goods company that has Made in Italy imprinted in its DNA. A Tuscan workshop run by real artisans, carriers of expertise forged during many years in the production of leather goods. The specialty of the house is the refined leather wrapping technique applied with various finishing methods: knotted, tubular, herringbone, particular stitching and, in general, everything that includes skilled handwork. This company’s production is limited precisely because the emphasis is on quality workmanship and raw materials.

One of the latest collections is an accessory that combines tradition and innovation: the exclusive leather wrapped USB charging cable for IPhone 5 and 6. A type of square calfskin scoubidou wraps around the cable entirely, from the top to the bottom. The charging cable is available in two sizes, 50 cm and 100 cm, and in forty colours that are always available regardless of the season. A small, great idea in the wake of Made in Italy ingenuity.

This immediately led to the successful creation of Eau de Toilette, Brilliantine, and Wax for household use. During the Second World War, the plant in Prato was destroyed by aerial bombing but resumed regular activities after the war at its new premises. In 1973, the company changed location again and moved to Montemurlo, where the laboratories and offices are still located. Even the corporate mission must b rethought: the company took it upon itself to

keep the Tuscan perfumery tradition alive in the light of new knowledge of cosmetics starting with the production of liquid soaps and creamy emulsions for face and body care. Over the past decade, our laboratories have paid particular attention to the development of particularly evocative fragrance compositions that are closely bound to Tuscany’s cultural heritage. MARILYN & FERRAGAMO: a FLORENTINE STORY 60 /BUYER MAGAZINE/

«I

t’s not the face that strikes you, but the expressions… It’s not the body that we like, but the way in which he moves… It's not usually the body that attracts us, but the way someone does something». With this statement, Norma Jean Baker, better known as Marilyn Monroe, described herself to perfection: a frail and misunderstood woman, a timeless myth that still succeeds in enchanting the entire world today as she did many years ago, thanks to her elegance and naiveté. Not everyone knows that divine Marilyn had a close bond with Made in Tuscany, more specifically with the “prodigious shoemaker” Salvatore Ferragamo, who loved calling her a Venus and created her rigorously made-to-measure shoes. A union between the star and the “shoemaker to the stars” already celebrated in an exhibition organized by Maison Ferragamo, to celebrate Marilyn. Her dearest friends and accomplices talked about and remembered her: her clothes, accessories, artwork, photos and videos. An exursus through the memories that through magic and enchantment, made the most famous blonde in history “come to life”. A part of the exhibit was devoted solely to shoes, including those created for her by Salvatore Ferragamo himself. Like stepping back in time, this event has brought that which the maestro created for the style and true essence of the actress, to current times. A location worthy of her fame was chosen and prepared: the Ferragamo Museum, located in the heart of the city, where fashion and art meet making Florence a diamond of Made in Tuscany. More than 50 years after her death (August 5, 1962), I wanted to pay homage to this myth through her shoes, thanks to which we Tuscans feel that Marilyn Monroe was also a little bit “ours”. “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world” Marilyn Monroe

furnished space says a great deal about those who live in it: it is the first and most important calling card that we give to each person that comes to visit us in our home or workplace. Furniture, curtains, and lamps help us explain our character, our sensitivity and our taste: being able to choose from quality products is essential to telling ourselves and others who we are. In this section, we will discover how to make the most of our living spaces, starting from the shape: from the preparation of working spaces to the architectural design of the home. Even in this area, that inimitable combination of taste, artisan expertise and innovation that characterize Made in Italy, emerges. On the following pages, you will find some tips to make the space you live in every day more beautiful and comfortable.

MARCO MATTEINI MATTEINI + ASSOCIATES

M

arco Matteini is an architect and founder of the MATTEINI + ASSOCIATES firm with offices in Prato and Pistoia. With his multiple and globally appreciated works, Matteini is present at prestigious architectural events like the Venice Biennale and the Milan Triennale.

M

atteini’s work is oriented towards a range of themes: environmental, executive, industrial, residential, public, receptive, and restoration. We asked Marco Matteini his thoughts about industrial architecture in particular: «I see the architect's role like that of an orchestra conductor. Specifically, I am convinced that the architecture for enterprises and industries should combine the brand's identity with the functionality of the production plant. Optimization of working space and beauty. Efficiency and aesthetics. Rationality and image. Without forgetting the right balance between budget, sustainability and high-quality projects».

FIDERTESSILE FIDERTESSILE PREZIOSI THE TEXTILEACCESSORI REVOLUTION MADE IN ITALY

T

he Fidertessile story is first and foremost a family’s history that began in 1960 when Mr. Tebaldo Colligiani began producing and selling upholstery textiles destined to use in various sectors. In 1974, his children Renzo and Giovanna became involved in their father’s activity and founded the current Fidertessile. This company is located in Agliana (PT), and is specialized in the production of a wide range of textiles for interior design. They range from jacquards to microfibers and velvets, with at an endless choice of designs and patterns, natural and synthetic materials, and colours. Fidertessile dedicates a great amount of attention to research in the textile field in order to propose competitive and innovative products each time. The most recent example is “Newlife” a new revolutionary eco-friendly fabric made from recycled materials and ground PET (plastic

bottles in first place), using a patented industrial process, which arrives on the market with a zero environmental impact. Among the various Fidertessile collections, many fabrics bear witness to the company’s creative and productive capacity: woollen fabrics with a weft/warp weave, plain and micro patterned fabrics, different slub tones on the weft and warp creating fabrics with a paintbrush stroke effect. In addition to very precious calender fabrics: natural fibres embellished with lamé that gives a gold or silver finishing effect, endowing fabrics with a luxurious look. True Made in Italy applied to textiles.
