EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

H

appy New Year! And to those of you who are contemplating change in your lives – Happy New Beginnings! I know there's a risk that you will be Bowie'd out by the time you read this but bear with me because: A. He was a genius and B. Along with the tribute, there is a point to considering the legacy he has left us. There is no question that the world has lost an incredible star. Bowie affected everyone who grew up with his music. How lucky we were to have had him. When I think back to my early exposure to Bowie's 'Man Who Sold the World' and subsequent albums and personas, I can still perceive the influence his music had on my formative years. Bowie opened the doors to a world that was so much bigger and more exciting than many of us could imagine in NZ at the time. With his fearlessness of change and trying new things he showed his millions of fans the breadth and potential we all have. The master of reinvention, he showed us that we don't have to be 'stuck' in life, we can try on new 'suits' see what fits and what complements our stage in life. This realisation is all the more poignant to me as this is my penultimate issue before I head off to study in new fields. Since making the decision to change my direction in life I have been blown away by the number of people who have told me about their own reinventions. From a PR professional who has become a successful novelist, an advertising agency creative who is now a Reiki master, to a beautician turned lawyer, during the holidays I have been inspired by accounts from several people who decided to take different paths in their lives at a mature age. Of course while some changes in life work, others may not, but the whole point is about giving something new a go. As Einstein so wisely pointed out – doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insanity. So whether the changes you are contemplating in your lives this year are large or small. Whether it is having a go at painting, learning a new language, changing your career or opening a business – good on you! Give it your best shot and don't worry if it doesn't work out entirely as you had planned, you will be richer for the experience.

CHAMPAGNE TASTE ON A SPY'S BUDGET

W

hen one mentions James Bond images of martinis, fast cars, beautiful women, and of course Bollinger Champagne are conjured. To celebrate Bollinger's association with the Bond movies and the latest release, the famous Champagne house created a limited edition '007 Bollinger Spectre Crystal Set'. Worldwide only 307 of these stunning sets were produced. Founded in Lorraine in 1586 and now owned by Hermès, Saint-Louis has master glassblowers that continue to excel at the art of cutting. Eric Berthès created and designed the showcase to be as rare and unequalled as the champagne itself. Christchurch's The George has a long standing relationship with Bollinger Champagne and as such relished the opportunity to secure this product. The George now has the only set available in New Zealand which is not such a surprise as its signature restaurant Pescatore is one of only two NZ restaurants to have a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. The '007 Bollinger Spectre Crystal Set' is the ultimate in celebratory bubbles - perfect for the festive season, romantic engagement, Valentine's Day or just because you love great champagne and design.

he team at Harcourts Holmwood showed their generosity and support for the community last December by getting into the spirit of Christmas and collecting donations of non-perishable food, blankets and toiletries for the Christchurch City Mission. Harcourts Holmwood established collection depots at its offices at 397 and 407 Ilam Road, 74 Edgeware Road, 51 Holmwood Road and 175 Papanui Road. They also called out and collected donations where necessary. The initiative resulted in a generous yield and just before Christmas they delivered thousands of dollars' worth of provisions to the mission - approximately 50 brimming boxes. The team say it was a very emotional experience and that the Foodbank Co-ordinator, Mary Wood, was over the moon with the delivery. To ensure a sumptuous Christmas dinner for those in need they also donated hams for the night shelter Christmas dinner.

f you have an 18ish-year-old who is about to embark on their first year at university, then you need to know about the recently released book by local author Trudi Urlwin: 'Say Something! The UniSmart Guide to Life, the University & Everything'. Designed for would-be students about to leave high school who are considering embarking on the university pathway, the book is for 'bulletproof' young adults, who probably won't buy it for themselves. However, if you can manage to slip a copy somewhere they will stumble across it and have a light-hearted and informative read, it may just save them from the ongoing temptation to drink like a lush and hit fire alarms for fun. It will certainly help them deal with the inevitable ups and downs they're likely to experience. Trudi is the co-director of UniSmart, a business which puts together comprehensive, action packed lectures for first year students of the world. In fact they've reached almost 600,000 first year students in the UK, Australia, NZ, USA and Canada…

OUT & ABOUT

When you were in your twenties you were fired up about live performance – what did you learn from this and how has this love affected your business UniSmart? Theatre was my first career and the UniSmart presentation is a blend of theatre and information. It is a live experience for live people, who react and participate and feel amazing afterwards because of it. UniSmart is the love child of myself and my husband, John Davey (formerly known as the Amazing Mr Moon). It's our business, 50/50. Later you became Festivals & Events coordinator for the Christchurch City Council what were the stand-out events you organised? That would have to be the inaugural KidsFest and the two KidsFests that followed it. All thanks to visionary Mayor Vicki Buck, who handed her idea to me and said, “Trudi can you do a festival for kids?” I said “Hell Yes!” and asked for a brief. She said, “That is the brief”. It seems your career has been a natural progression mixing performance with creativity and organisation – how did your current business Ideas Agency Ltd come about? I enjoyed managing Festivals but wanted to be independent (story of my life), so I left the Council and set up World Events. In between, I was meeting up with John who I found inspirational in his approach to his career. We started to swap skills and ideas. Then we shared an office and an events secretary and John taught me how to present to a room and do successful pitches. I taught him how to write a fair contract, protect his ideas and get paid. Then out of the blue, we were asked to source the original clown doctor, Dr Patch Adams, for a world medical conference in Christchurch. So we just rang him up in

the States and invited him to tour New Zealand hospitals and he agreed and suddenly John and I were managing our first major event together and it was great, easy. So we formed a company and worked out fairly quickly that John is by far the better presenter and I am better at contracts, systems etc. We divided up every single job involved in running a busy company by playing to our strengths and supporting each other. Now we have help. What inspired you to write 'Say Something! The UniSmart Guide to Life, the University & Everything'? I thought the UniSmart concept would make a good book one day and I like writing down observations, so I had three bulging notebooks from years of touring with UniSmart, and then I left the current one in a toilet block at a remote Arts college in Devon, England. I was resigned to the loss, but a bit devastated. After three days, John rang our client and asked him to go into the Ladies to see if my notebook was still there. It was! I thought - it's a sign. Time to get this book written. How did you decide what the most valuable content for your book would be?

Making Our Place - Your Home At Ilam Lifecare facility we provide a beautiful homely environment

28 Ilam Road, Christchurch

Life is a big subject. My publisher eventually had to stop me from adding chapters because we were running close to deadline. Much of the content was informed by the thousands of completed survey forms we have from first year students across the world. What was your thought process behind the delivery of your book given the young, bulletproof audience you are attempting to engage? Very instinctive. Basically, I streamed words on to the page at a breakneck pace and then made sense of it later. I think it's important to talk to young people like the intelligent life forms they are and not be afraid of them. I particularly like this age group – so full of potential for life and disaster in equal measure. Where can people get your book? In Christchurch it's at Paper Plus Merivale Mall, Barrington and Bush Inn, Scorpio Books, Take Note Ferrymead, UBS (University of Canterbury) Paper Tree and Whitcoulls. Also available to purchase on our website www.unismart.biz What is your proudest achievement? My relationships with my children Eva and Max and my step-boys Rowan and Robin. They are the most wonderful kids and I had something to do with that. We have such a good time when we all get together and my book is dedicated to them –'The Awesome Foursome'. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something, what would it be? You're doing fine. Get a dog. What is your favourite drink? Christchurch tap water after being overseas. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I'm shy, so I'm hopeless at business networking. What's next on your wish list? Finish my crime novel.

L

ike New Zealand, Norfolk Island prides itself on being small, special and friendly. Despite the island being just 8kms long and 5kms wide, there's plenty to explore and visitors are amply rewarded with unspoiled beaches and bays, adventure activities, fabulous food, unique ancestry, spectacular heritage architecture and history that has spanned brutal to benign in three generations. Orientation is easy - take a tour, hire a car or book a bike to find unexpected scenic splendour on a trip around the island. Food lovers will be astonished by the organic and gastronomic quality available. On Norfolk Island you can be as active or indolent as you wish. These manifestations of Cholmondeley’s Vision: Value Our Children, are easy to note in the new building: benches, windows, and door handles built at heights appropriate for young people respect children’s practical needs, while reading nooks and breakout spaces acknowledge their right to privacy.

lthough it may look tricky, nail the trend and you'll be able to create many more looks from your wardrobe. Mixing and clashing prints is all about being playful with fashion. Just remember to stick to the same colour family and mix prints with similar tones. It's a good idea to select one print to dominate and use the other as an accent. Rest assured that stripes and florals always look good, or try working your print back with neutral shades of blush, beige or grey for a subtle look. It's all about feeling comfortable with what you are wearing so don't go overboard – sticking to two prints is a good rule of thumb. You can break up patterned pieces with a black belt or wear a solid white or black as a contrast .

Superb community healthcare A new community and a new opportunity to provide healthcare services for that community. That is the focus for Karen Crisp and Graeme Smith, the co-owners of The Landing's recently opened Unichem pharmacy and of their manager Tom, a clinical pharmacist who is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

W “

igram Skies is a vibrant and growing community covering the whole spectrum of ages and ethnicities,” says Karen. “There are also retirement villages here and a range of other businesses. So we are really excited about being the first port of call in this community for their healthcare requirements.” This focus is reflected in the wide range of services provided by the pharmacy covering everything from the conventional dispensing of medications and giving advice on natural health remedies, to carrying out medicine reviews, doing blood pressure checks, treating minor ailments and providing flu vaccinations. This is indeed a one-stop shop for customers' well-being and healthcare needs. “Both Karen and I believe that pharmacy is about providing patient-centred services and really adding value to medications,” explains Graeme. Karen and Graeme are also

o wear pink well you need to find the right shade. Look at your colouring – your hair and skin tone – you want a tone that flatters. If you are pale, then a pale shade of pink will make you look washed out and give you too much of an overall nude look, so opt for something with a little more punch. Next select the tone, from subtle peachy pink right through to fuchsia for a classic bold pink pop. If you are unsure about the look, add pink to your wardrobe slowly in the form of florals or prints. Finally keep the look fuss-free but do add bold accessories to subvert any primness.

It's a SUPERFOOD frenzy! What is a superfood? Superfoods are foods rich in nutrients which provide us with a variety of health benefits. They have large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols (micronutrients in our diet, known for their role in the prevention of degenerative diseases), vitamins and minerals. Who can benefit from having superfoods? It's important for everyone to foster a diet rich in superfood goodness! Research shows that the typical Western diet of refined, processed and cooked foods means that most people get less than 10 percent of their required daily vitamins and minerals from the foods they eat. Making an effort to incorporate superfoods into your diet is an excellent way of ensuring you get enough nutrients. How can I incorporate superfoods into my family's diet? Snack on superfoods rather than processed foods and sugary drinks. Chop fresh fruit and vegetables into bite-sized pieces, make fruit smoothies, and have nuts and seeds handy to graze on. Consider superfood supplements to boost your nutrient intake. Superfood powders are simple and convenient to add to smoothies, muesli or porridge, sauces and dressings, baking, marinades, or a glass of water, depending on the product. What's different about Lighthouse Superfoods? The Lighthouse Superfoods range presents a variety of natural superfood powders, each containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids and nutrients, available in a convenient, easy-to-use tub.

Pencils designed for children All pencils are designed the same… right? Get a grip! Write Size is a revolutionary new range of pencils that has been developed especially for children, to help lessen the strain on a child's hand by making the flow of writing easier.

T

o put it bluntly, a child having to learn with equipment that's designed for larger adult hands is pointless! Write Size pencils are quite simply the sharpest tool in the pencil case! We don't expect our children to wear clothes or shoes that are too big for them, so why do we give them a pencil - the most fundamental tool of education - that is nearly twice the ideal size for them to write with? Ross Williams, Managing Director at Write Size, says: “After watching my children struggle learning to write with tools that are obviously too big, Write Size was developed. Using logic to develop the range, Write Size is

a totally new innovation that is launching globally – starting in New Zealand!” With a better grip, Write Size helps make writing easier, provides children with much more control and, most importantly, the pencils are made to scale to fit their hands. Write Size pencils are available for a range of ages – including: Ÿ 2 – 6 years Ÿ 6 – 10 years Ÿ 10 years and over Write Size can be purchased nationally and exclusively from Warehouse Stationery for an RRP of $9.99.

ate was inspired by the New Zealand rural landscapes after living at Glen Lyon; she loves the colours and textures of our natural alpine environment and those amongst it: merinos, bees and discarded birds' nests left on the ground, anything that sparks her interest! “My dream had always been to have a gallery and exhibit my own work. When our third child was six months old, a perfect little building in Waikari came on the market. Initially I owned it with a friend and was hoping to be able to exhibit my own works, but painting took a back seat to a very busy, coffee shop and art gallery!” For eight years the business grew, exhibiting some of New Zealand's very well-known artists, and selling some exclusive interior products! But after a long period of working seven days a week, painting, farming, and children were calling. Since closing the Rocking Frog in 2015 the paintbrush never stops. Kate has exhibited at Culverden Fete, Aigantighe Gallery in Timaru, and more recently at 'Art In The Garden'. Her work is inspired by nature, and can be viewed on her Facebook page 'Kate Calder Gallery', she welcomes commission work.

PICTURESQUE SETTING for a 'dream day' to remember

By Cheryl Colley

Romance flourishes in the warmth and holiday atmosphere of the summer. Inevitably there will be engagements. If you have just become engaged - congratulations. Now comes the fun of planning your wedding and making the very important decision of where to hold your ceremony and wedding reception…

T

hat decision really isn't so difficult. There can be few more picturesque settings for a wedding than The Vineyard @ Rossendale, located on the edge of Christchurch, but seemingly a world away from the hustle of the city. Set amongst exquisite mature gardens on the Old Tai Tapu Road and with the backdrop of a working vineyard, The Vineyard @ Rossendale can create a truly memorable wedding for you. “People are still discovering our existence,” says events manager Graham Jones. “We don't want to be a secret – just the opposite. The more people learn about what we have to offer the happier we will be.” The Vineyard @ Rossendale is available for weddings throughout the year, each season visually memorable in its own way. Whether you have dreamed of a lavish wedding breakfast, a sophisticated cocktail party, an elegant lunch or afternoon tea, Graham's team will listen to your special ideas and then use their knowledge and experience to “make it happen.”

40 January 21, 2016 Metropol

“This is a really adaptable venue. It's a blank canvas that can be dressed and themed to suit all tastes – from rustic to modern, from traditional to funky. We can also provide wet weather options for the ceremony at a moment's notice. Otherwise there are many locations in the grounds that will create a captivating setting – perhaps under a magnificent copper beach

or alongside rhododendrons and perennial borders.” A variety of menus offers flexibility to select the dining style that suits you, complemented by the vineyard's own wines or beverages of your choice. Served indoors, outdoors, among the vines, at sunrise or sunset if you wish, your guests will be treated to a day to remember.

CUISINE RECIPES FOOD WINE BARS & CAFÉS RESTAURANTS

FUSION OF FLAVOURS This recipe, straight from the MasterChef New Zealand Kitchen, won the 'Gourmet' dish for My Food Bags. Head chef, dietitian and MasterChef 2011 winner Nadia Lim appeared on the show to guest judge each contestant's dishes. Fennel Crusted Venison Loin with Braised Red Cabbage, Edamame & Plums Braised Red Cabbage 1/2 red onion, finely diced 1 teaspoon fennel spice mix 1/2 red cabbage, finely sliced until you have about 3 cups worth 1 plum (from pottle), pitted, roughly chopped 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/2 cup red wine 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar Fennel Crusted Venison Loin 300g venison loin (at room temperature) 1 teaspoons fennel spice mix 1 tablespoon butter Edamame 1 tablespoon butter Zest and juice of 1/2 a lemon 1-3/4 cups frozen podded edamame beans, defrosted Plums 2 plums (from pottle), pitted, roughly chopped Large pinch fennel spice mix

42 January 21, 2016 Metropol

METHOD 1. Heat a drizzle of oil in a medium pot (with a lid) on medium heat. Cook onion and first measure of fennel spice mix for 2 minutes until softened. Add all remaining braised red cabbage ingredients to pot. Stir to combine and reduce heat to low. Simmer, covered, for 15 minutes or until plum has broken down and cabbage is wilted. Stir occasionally to avoid cabbage sticking. Season to taste with salt and pepper, set aside and keep warm. 2. While cabbage cooks, pat venison dry with paper towels and cut into 2 even pieces. Rub a little olive oil into each piece and coat in second measure fennel spice mix. Heat a medium fry-pan on medium heat and cook venison for 2 minutes on each of all 4 sides for medium-rare (depending on thickness), or until cooked to your liking. Remove from pan and wrap in foil to rest for 5 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain. 3. Wipe out pan and return to medium to high heat. Add butter, lemon zest and juice. When butter has melted toss edamame beans through for 1 minute, until heated through. Season to taste with salt and pepper. In a small bowl combine chopped plums with remaining fennel spice mix. To serve, divide braised cabbage and edamame between plates. Top with sliced venison and spoon over plums.

've got some great stories about No 4. Fantastic nights filled with wonderful food and beverages, shared with great friends having good times. It's an old favourite for a lot of people. It's central and accessible to most in Christchurch, at 4 Mansfield Ave in Merivale. It's been the destination many a time for a combination of great atmosphere, great food and a beverage or two. I myself have attended wonderful functions in the library and it's available for your function too, a wonderful place to throw that special celebration, perhaps an engagement party, a work get together, or that dinner you would rather have No 4 sort for you than have at your own house. It feels like home anyway doesn't it? The chefs are wonderful at putting great combinations on the menu and there are the specials to check out as well. TILE DISPLAYS MAKE SELECTION SIMPLE There can be few more attractive premises to choose tiles from than Exquisite Tiles' showroom at 295 Blenheim Road. An abundance of natural light in the new showroom complements and enhances the vast range of eye-catching displays of tiles from all over the world to make your selection easy.

arge format tiles and smaller sizes in natural earthy tones share space with coloured mosaics and fashionable decorative 3D wall panels. You will also find a wide range of timber laminates here as well as hard timber flooring. Upstairs there is even a large studio area where customers can lay out their house plans and discuss tiling or other flooring options with Exquisite Tiles' consultants. Exquisite Tiles not only advise customers about tiles, help them with their choices and supply tiles, but they have a distinct point of difference – their installation service. This really is a flooring solution company. Consultants Karen and Michele are experts in their field with many years of experience in both installation and interior design. “Choosing the most appropriate tiles

for particular environments is crucial,” Karen explains, “especially now that people want to use tiles not only in the traditional areas, but also as features.” Exquisite Tiles have also partnered with Oakleys, the bathroom product suppliers and with Winstone Glass to give customers a complete service for their shower and bathroom designs. Several feature displays in the showroom demonstrate how versatile and artistic tiles can be in this area of the home. Enquiries and consultations are welcomed at the Blenheim Road Showroom from Monday to Friday 9am– 5pm and Saturday from 10am – 12.30pm. Alternatively phone Exquisite Tiles on (03) 348 3285, email sales@exquisitetiles.co.nz or visit www.exquisitetiles.co.nz for new tiling styles, design and trends.

Terrariums are also very popular this season – check out Vast and Industria for great shapes and styles, and Industria's glass domes set on a concrete, whitewash or white base. colours, or try hanging planters in bright macramé, ceramic or glass. Upcycle a favourite frame to create your own vertical garden, with a patchwork of succulents becoming a living piece of art. Simple instructions can be found online for a fun summer project, and once established the plants need very little care. A similar but more dramatic look can be made with your own fern gallery, with Staghorn ferns mounted on wooden slats. Terrariums are also very popular this season – check out Vast and Industria for

great shapes and styles, and Industria's glass domes set on a concrete, whitewash or white base. Just add your own sand, stones and moss, and once again an easy to grow succulent or cactus, and you are away. If you want the look without the effort there is always fake foliage. Typo has some fun terrariums in a variety of designs, and all complete with a cute little fake plant. For something a little different try

growing your own rooting plant in a glass vessel. Take a plant cutting, with herbs such as lavender or mint, and ivy, working well. Place the cutting in a water filled glass vase or pot, be it curved and hand blown, square cut or a simple glass jar, and watch roots grow over the coming months - an artwork of nature in itself. Of course the most effective options can also be the simplest – fresh cut flowers, from your own garden or a florist, set a vase on the kitchen table.

HOME DESIGN TRENDS The New Year brings fresh perspective, which makes it the perfect time to experiment with home décor. Here are the top design trends for 2016 for the four most important rooms in our homes. Bathrooms Last year, metals made a strong appearance in our living spaces. This year, they are creeping into our bathrooms, but with a bit more subtlety. Matt, burnished and satin-finish metals will steal the limelight – expect loads of brushed stainless steel tapware and brass, rather than bright polished metals.

Choose warmer metallics over cool silver for a modern bathroom look.

56 January 21, 2016 Metropol

Want to work some metal into your bathroom? Get a little bold with brass faucets or change the cabinet knobs to a metal finish. If you really want to dazzle, try a copper bath. Kitchens Metallics are also here to stay in the kitchen, but like the bathroom, this year warmer metallics like brass, gold and copper will outshine cooler metals like silver and stainless steel. To really show off the finish, offset the shine with a dark matt colour. Pendant lights above an island bench are also a great way to introduce a metallic look. This year the focus in our kitchens will be on really smart, functional design. This applies to technology, appliances, cabinetry and storage. For example, toe-kick drawers, space saving innovations and built-in charge ports for devices.

Living In the living room, globally inspired is the look to go for in 2016 – think unique furniture and homewares crafted by artisans and with sustainability at their core. Basketry, lambskins, tassels, natural fibres, ethnic poufs, pottery and organic linens could all grace the pages of this year's living room lookbook. But designers warn to dress your room with restraint. The trick is to mix artisan, vintage and mass-produced goods to create an eclectic yet sophisticated space. A wooden statue from your travels in Asia will look perfect on a Kmart coffee table atop your grandmother's handmade braided rug. But remember, from the stuffing in our cushions to the vase on the shelf, sustainability is compulsory. Ecological sustainability and ethical sourcing of products are just as important in the design of our homes as are the colour on the walls.

for 2016

Bedroom With life becoming more and more frenetic, it is more important than ever to have a calm sanctuary where we log off for the day and get the quality rest we need. While technology is in for everywhere else, it is definitely out in the bedroom. That means no TVs and no devices – just minimal furniture, calming colours and a few quirky accents for personality. Thankfully, our love affair with beige is over and black and white steps up as the new colour palette for 2016. Texture is also a welcome addition, particularly in the form of natural wood. Natural timber trims and panels

Timber panelling brings a natural element and adds warmth to an otherwise stark space. bring nature indoors and help to create a tranquil oasis conducive to sleep.

Aim for a mix of artisan, vintage and mass-produced items for personality and balance.

HOME RENOVATION TIPS When choosing contractors here are 10 things to consider: 1. Ask the contractor for at least three references. 2. Diligently check these credentials out. A referral from a friend or relative is always ideal. 3. Ask the contractor if they carry liability insurance in the case of damage to your home. 4. Ask them how long they have been in business. 5. Find out what licenses the workers have such as electrical or plumbing. 6. What kind of renovations do they specialise in? 7. Will they use their own crew or do they subcontract out? 8. Find out how they handle getting the required permits such as building, plumbing and electrical. 9. Discuss deposits required and review a copy of their contract. 10. Are they members of any builder's associations? The written contract should include the scope of work, price, payment, deposits, schedule, timetable, clean up and disposal of materials.

Project management It is always best to bring in several estimates for your job. Communication is important and if you find it hard to get answers to your questions about estimates then it will only get worse as time goes along. You want to be comfortable with the person you hire. Here are some areas to consider: * They should be willing to advise you and help refine any issues that come up as the project progresses.

* How flexible is the contractor to changes or revisions of plans? In some cases renovators may uncover hidden problems, so have a little extra cash put aside for these unexpected events. * The lowest bid is not always the best choice. And a cash deal, though tempting, may leave you with no legal recourse if problems creep up later. * Choose the contractor that you feel will provide the best overall value and stands behind their work.

LINCOLN

Giving new gardeners a chance to grow Summer greens and colourful bouquets aren't the only things sprouting in the Lincoln Envirotown Community Gardens; there is also a growing sense of community pride.

E

stablished by the Lincoln Envirotown Trust in 2008 with land generously made available by the Canterbury District Health Board, Lincoln's community gardens provide plots for community groups to grow produce and a space where people can connect with the environment. Vegetables are also provided for people in need. But one of the most important roles the gardens have in this tight knit community is in education. With increasing living costs and awareness of garden-to-table food philosophies, more and more people are keen to try their hand at growing their own vegetables. In support of this, the community gardens team runs workshops and seminars aimed at educating and encouraging good gardening practices. But if group learning isn't your thing, there's always an old hand available to impart pearls of wisdom to newbie gardeners. You can find the gardens on James Street at the rear of the Lincoln Maternity Hospital

and at any given time you'll find individuals, groups, children and elderly people carefully tending the well-kept, productive plots. Lincoln Envirotown Trust is funded by Selwyn District Council, the Rata Foundation and other agencies, as well as donations of time and money from the community.

Lincoln's community gardens provide plots for community groups to grow produce and a space where people can connect with the environment. For more information about the Lincoln Envirotown Community Gardens, contact co-ordinator Ruth Wood, ruth.wood@xtra.co.nz, phone (03) 325 2193.
