LOS GATOS HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL TO RETIRE Kevin Buchanan reflects on a career of shaping school culture

Silent auction raises $112,000+ for charity

By Drew Penner, Reporter

Kevin Buchanan sat in his office overlooking the front lawn as the rain faded into blue sky just before noon on Friday. Last month, the 64-year-old Los Gatos High School principal broke the news to the school community that this year will be his final at the helm of the high-achieving public institution. “There’s a lot of different memories, and they’re all kind of flooding back right now,” he said, reflecting on steering the educational ship through rough waters. “We did a lot—and it wasn’t just me. It was a team effort.” Buchanan came to LGHS at a time when the school was embroiled in sex abuse controversies and coming out of the darkest days of the pandemic. Over his tenure, the school opened the wellness center program, focused on supporting the emotional development of students, and saw the high school football team contend for a state championship. But first, he had to get the ➝ LGHS, 4

For the second-year running, the Rotary Club of Los Gatos’ Crab Fest has been held on one of the rainiest days of the year. Yet on Saturday night, there was a sell-out crowd at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church hall in Saratoga, as community members contributed more than $100,000 to support the group’s philanthropy. “I couldn’t be happier,” said Suzanne Boxer-Gassman, Crab Fest chair, at the end of the night as the contributions were ➝ Crab Fest, 10

school up-and-running—since classes had gone virtual. “If that was Job 1, then addressing school culture was Job 2,” he said. “It was almost just as important.” In 2022, the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District agreed to pay $3.5 million to settle a lawsuit in which a victim claimed she was groomed and assaulted, beginning in 1999, by an assistant track coach at the high school named Chioke Robinson. The girl’s mother found a love letter from Robinson and a discarded pregnancy test in the garbage and said Trudy McCulloch, the principal at the time, and Willie Harmatz, a coach, were informed but didn’t take action. Current and former students held a march through town to push for change. By the time Buchanan had arrived, the controversy sparked in-part by an NBC Bay Area investigation into the “Los Gatos High School ‘Culture of Denial,’” had begun to die down. However, the District was still fighting to have a #metoo-era law that allowed older sex abuse claims to be heard deemed unconstitutional. Buchanan says he decided to listen to the school community and tackle the uncomfortable challenges head-on. “We wanted to square up to them and be honest with ourselves, honest with our students and honest with our staff,” he said. “There are specific actions and strategies that we’ve done to improve in that area and I think we have—I know we have.” Training for employees and students touched on legal rights, the importance of caring relationships and Title 9 rules, which provides a path of holding sexual abusers in educational settings accountable. “We developed an action plan for creating a positive school culture,” Buchanan said. According to LGHS statistics, students are reporting higher levels of trust for adults on campus, with more students saying they believe the school will respond to cases of harassment and other instances of bad behavior. A recent board presentation by the Montana Institute said 88% of Los Gatos teens say they don’t need alcohol to have fun. Meanwhile, the high school is doing more to celebrate people of different

FROM HOSPITALITY TO EDUCATION backgrounds and is taking steps to combat the influx of fentanyl in the region. Mancunian’s journey from Beverly Hills to Silicon Valley When Buchanan consults the bell schedule above his desk, or taps away at his weekly principal’s message to parents, hanging on the wall to his left are a pair of Californian license plates that give away his origin (if his accent hadn’t done so already). One reads “GO MCFC,” a message in support of his hometown Manchester City Football Club. He left England in 1982 and moved to Los Angeles in the era of Beverly Hills Cop, Magic Johnson on the Lakers and Fernando Valenzuela playing for the Dodgers. Buchanan got a job at the ironically pink Beverly Hills Hotel working in banquets. He went on to manage restaurants at the L'Ermitage Beverly Hills and the Beverly Wilshire. “I did almost 20 years in the hotel business,” he said, noting his wife encouraged him to return to school. They already had a child, so he continued to work while getting an English degree at UCLA. He taught at Los Angeles High School, then returned to UCLA to get a masters in educational leadership (via a program emphasizing social justice and structural change). His first administrative position was an assistant principal role at La Cañada High School. It was a completely different situation, and not just because it included grades 7-12. While his previous employer was part of the Los Angeles Unified School District (currently the second-largest district in the United States, after the New York City Department of Education), an administrator could have a greater influence over the trajectory of a school like La Cañada, which is located near NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech. “I learned a lot,” he said, noting it was particularly informative to see how a school could respond nimbly to the needs of its community. “In that respect it’s similar to Los Gatos.” They nurtured a robotics program, developed career technical education studies and even had crime scene investigation classes.

RENOWNED INSTITUTION Buchanan says before coming to Silicon Valley, he used to admire Los Gatos High School’s performance from afar.

But he also noticed how affluent schools have a unique role to play in ensuring that students of all backgrounds have opportunities to succeed. “If they’re not vigilant, they’re almost more prone to ignoring those important aspects of creating a welcoming school environment,” he said when asked about the lessons he’s brought with him. “They applied there; they apply here.” After spending 11 years as principal of Oak Park High School, Buchanan said he jumped at the chance to lead LGHS, a school that administrators in SoCal would frequently measure their efforts against. “I had always admired the schools in Northern California,” he said. “We were trying to copy the best practices.” According to Buchanan, in order to be an effective educator, you have to continually ask yourself if all groups of students are progressing. “It’s not just racial—it’s disability and language abilities,” he said. “There are a lot of different ways that kids can be groups.” Taking action to promote cultural awareness The importance of creating a welcoming environment was on full display as racist, antisemitic and homophobic slurs appeared on the campus during Halloween 2021. “We arrived here on Monday morning after the Halloween night to a campus that had been vandalized—not just vandalized but really offensive, racist and homophobic slurs spray-painted on the walls and windows of our campus all over,” Buchanan said in a YouTube upload. “Some of it was targeting specific

teachers. The campus was egged almost school-wide.” He urged the school community to come together to fight intolerance and prejudice. “It’s a really sinister element on our campus…Unless somebody helps us take a stand here and comes forward, I’m afraid that this will continue to be repeated.” Buchanan says they haven’t had any similar instances since. The Black History Month display in the hallway is just one example of how the Buchanan Administration has sought to help broaden cultural awareness at LGHS. They developed a “Making Our School An Inclusive Community” program that is delivered during some “tutorial” periods, to help students “avoid making mistakes” around these sorts of issues. “Each year we’re refining the curriculum,” he said. Buchanan has found preparing the various initiatives personally beneficial, too. For example, he says he gained a deeper appreciation for the various cultures that celebrate the Lunar New Year. “It’s not ‘Chinese’ New Year,” he said. “I learned that here.” Buchanan says he wants to retire “while I still have some energy left to enjoy myself.” But he says it wasn’t an easy decision. “I’m tinged with a little guilt, because I know I still have things to offer the school, and I still will love being around a high school environment— especially when it’s going well,” he said. “I’ll miss a lot of those things.”

In December, longtime Campo di Bocce customers opened their Facebook feeds and saw construction workers in hi-viz outfits stretching sheets of translucent plastic across the popular Los Gatos eatery and sporting hall. But the facility, one of the community’s mainstay establishments, wasn’t shuttering for good. It was simply getting a spruce-up. It reopened in mid-January, front desk employee Jase Stone told the Los Gatan on Friday. And now the business is preparing to celebrate a massive milestone. Campo di Bocce, the Bay Area’s premier bocce facility and restaurant, is marking its 27th anniversary on Feb. 8. Beginning with a family vacation to his ancestor’s town, Campobasso, Italy, Tom Albanese saw the residents playing bocce and families enjoying a meal at the

local bocciodromo (a large building with bocce courts, a restaurant, and bar). Albanese immediately thought it would be a great idea that might work for families in his hometown of Los Gatos. When he returned, he explained the concept to his friends of the local Los Gatos Bocce Club and found many of them interested in investing. He described it as “a place where friends and families could come, learn to play the game and enjoy a great Italian meal.” With investors and his own funds ready to go, he found an old lumberyard in downtown Los Gatos, perfect for the opportunity. Campo di Bocce was born. It became an important growth center for the sport of bocce along the West Coast. The site has also played host to countless family gatherings and raised money for many local charities. Ben Musolf, the company’s COO, says Albanese’s dream came true.

“Campo di Bocce has proven that anyone, of any age can learn and enjoy the sport that’s played by more than 30 million enthusiasts worldwide,” he said.

LGHS junior a force to be reckoned with

Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor

When Los Gatos High junior Nicole Steiner burst onto the scene in her freshman year, she displayed a maturity beyond her age. With her strong and physical play, Steiner delivered impressive numbers, including a handful of 20/20 games (20 points, 20 rebounds), as expectations grew. Steiner kept working hard and refined her game, putting herself in the running for Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division Player of the Year honors this season. The Wildcats entered this week’s action 19-2 overall and 9-0 in league. Barring a rash of unforeseen circumstances, they will finish unbeaten in the De Anza Division for the second consecutive year, making it 24-0 over the last two seasons. Junior returning starters Steiner, Ashley Childers and Ella Rabtiz have been key, along with senior returning starter Claire Galbo, and a handful of other players. “I would say we’ve had a strong season so far, and I think we are probably a little better than last year,” Steiner said. “The main starters all returned, and I think our chemistry is super good. We all know how to play with each other very well. Claire and I learned how to connect on the high-low (post offense), and me, Ashley and Ella have been playing basketball together since middle school and (National Junior Basketball).” To say the Wildcats have been dominant in league play this season is an understatement. To wit: they’ve won every game by double-digits, including a 26-point victory over Homestead, a 35-point win over Los Altos and a 51-point demoli-

The team’s only other loss came to another powerful team, Pinewood, also in December. Los Gatos had the lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on and eventually lost, 57-52. The Wildcats are likely to make the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs for the second straight year, putting them among the elite squads in the section. Mitty, the nation’s top-ranked team by Max Preps, is a shoo-in to win the Open and likely won’t be challenged until it reaches the CIF State Championship final. But the ’Cats would love to finish with the second best record in the Open Division bracket. “For the playoffs, there’s obviously Mitty, and they’re going to beat anyone

they play. But it would be really cool if we could get to the finals of the Open,” Steiner said. “That would be a really good goal to get to.” When freshmen display poise and talent, the rest of their career usually ends up going one of two ways: either they peak early, and the rest of the competition catches up to them; or, they keep improving, and continue to rise in stature. Steiner is the latter situation, having improved parts of her game with each succeeding grade level. Her improved footwork and movement allow her to get to her spots for high percentage shots in the lane. And this season, Steiner has made it a point to work on her mid-range game, particularly when it comes to shooting from the elbow area. “This year, I’m definitely trying to shoot a little more mid-range, and not everything directly under the basket,” she said. “I’ve only done that a little

bit, but I still need to try that a little more, especially against the not-sogood teams. I need to take advantage of that and shoot more.” Make no mistake: Steiner is at her best on the low block. She scores the majority of her points off putbacks or a move to the basket from this position. As a result, Steiner has had several games in which she’s shot 60% or better from the field—remarkably accurate in the prep game. Steiner’s biggest growth has come in her mindset with the officiating. Generally, powerful post players draw a lot of contact, and Steiner takes her fair share of physicality. Early in her career, Steiner could get frustrated if a foul wasn’t called if she went up for a shot and a defender made obvious contact. However, Steiner has made the necessary adjustments to her game and focused on being mentally tougher. “I think I’ve become desensitized to the refs,” she said. “I just had to learn how to play through contact and I think I’ve been good at that this year. Sometimes I’ll ask about certain fouls and they’ll tell you to watch for this or that. So, they’re usually pretty good (in communicating).” A three-sport standout, Steiner made the ultra-difficult decision in December to drop club volleyball, the sport many thought she would end up playing in college. However, Steiner’s rise in basketball and the shot put—an event in which she’s been competing for just two years—has attracted interest from four-year schools. Steiner will put her focus on club basketball throughout the year, and the shot put in the spring track and field season. “It was definitely a really big decision,” she said. “A long, long process, with several talks with my parents for a few months trying to figure out if it was the right decision for me. In the end, I didn’t want to play volleyball in college anymore. It was a big step to take and I’m happy with my decision—and confident it was the right one. Still, it was kind of sad: an end to a big era.” Steiner hasn’t selected a club team yet, but there are some nice options in the area, including Fever Basketball, which is coached by Doc Scheppler, the same person who Steiner credits for improving her mid-range shot. “Once the club season starts, I think recruiting will start picking up a little more because people don’t know me exactly yet,” she said.

SUMMER BULBS BEGIN IN WINTER Contributed

Ffe bruary 7 -13, 220 0224 4 : losgatan.com losgatan.co m

Spring bulbs begin to go into the garden during autumn to benefit from the chill of winter. Summer bulbs begin to go into the garden during late winter to avoid the chill of winter. Spring bulbs know to remain dormant through winter. Some summer bulbs do not. If they grow prematurely, they can be vulnerable to cool wintry weather. Late is better than early. Frost is still possible within some climates. However, summer bulbs are now in season. That is because, like spring bulbs, they disperse roots prior to developing foliage. By the time they extend foliage in a month or so, the weather will not be so cool. Later phases of a few sorts bloom later to prolong bloom for the first season. They synchronize afterward. That is because they establish themselves within the garden. Once they do, some types of summer bulbs become hardy perennials. Some might try to grow prematurely during subsequent winters. If they incur frost damage as established perennials, they can easily replace the damage. Ornamental gingers and cannas do so regularly in inland climates. Ornamental gingers and cannas may eventually benefit from division. Even if they do not become too crowded, they can migrate where they are not wanted. Their surplus is easy to relocate or share while dormant for winter. Their foliage becomes shabby or dies back during dormancy anyway. Even if mostly green, its removal stimulates healthy refoliation. Ornamental gingers and cannas also are oblivious to phasing. Gingers bloom only once for late summer or autumn. Cannas bloom randomly from spring until autumn. Gladiolus bloom only once like gingers, but are more conducive to phasing. Early planting allows early bloom. Late planting delays bloom. Unfortunately, they are much less sustainable. If summer bulbs do not look like bulbs, it is because few actually are. Most are rhizomes. Dahlias, which, like cannas, bloom from spring until autumn, grow from tuberous roots. As the name implies, tuberous begonias

LIKE CLOCKWORK Summer bulbs bloom after spring bulbs.

grow from tubers. Crocosmias grow from corms. So do taros, which are large foliar perennials. Gingers and cannas are familiar rhizomes. Although alliums bloom as summer bulbs, they go into the garden along with earlier spring bulbs. Highlight: Asian taro Both alocasias and colocasias are striking foliar plants. Alocasias generally develop big leaves that point upward. Colocasias generally develop even bigger leaves that hang downward. Alocasias are generally more colorful, perhaps with striking foliar patterns. Also, most tolerate more shade than colocasias. Of course, these are generalizations. Asian taro, Alocasia odora, resembles colocasias as much as alocasias. Its big cordate leaves may point only slightly upward, and might sag downward. They can grow two feet long and a foot wide, on petioles as long as three feet. Collectively, foliage can get more than five feet tall. It is bright but monochromatic green, similar to that of Kermit the Frog. Asian taro is only occasionally available from nurseries. Small plants are too delicate for nurseries to market too many of them for too long. Their dormant bulbs are more likely to become available with summer bulbs. They can be wider than three inches! They grow slowly though, especially while weather is cool. Foliage may not appear for two months. Tony Tomeo can be contacted at tonytomeo.com.
