Edgar Meyer on the rare and overlooked beauty of the double bass sing an unscientific study of the classical performing world, there aren’t many double bassists performing solo pieces. “Bass is not the most natural classical solo instrument, Edgar Meyer, one of the presentday exceptions and a master of the double bass, tells me. “However, it is a relatively unexposed voice, and therefore can reveal unexpected pleasures. Also, in recent years, partially because of close miking in recordings and amplification, partially because of gradual advances in the general listenability of bass playing, and also the leadership of some significant creative forces on the instrument in the second half of the 20th century, more people are becoming aware of that voice. However, when the heart of the classical repertoire was written, the bass wasn’t thought of at all as a solo instrument, probably with good reason. Lack of great repertoire is the biggest obstacle. Lack of repertoire is also the reason Meyer chose in 2000 to record Bach’s Unaccompanied Cello Suites on the double bass, a mammoth undertaking of technique. As one of the few able to bridge the requisite gap between dexterous physicality and tonal quality in solo bass pieces, “a bass concerto, Meyer says knowingly, “will of course live or die based on the successful execution of these tasks. This weekend, Meyer performs one of the few existing concertos for double bass, Giovanni Bottesini’s Concerto for String Bass no. 2 in B Minor, and chances are that no greater display of artistry will be occurring at the same time within a hundred-mile radius. Easily the present day’s most popular virtuoso of the instrument due to his crossover collaborations with James Taylor, Alison Krauss and Chris Thile, Meyer promises that classical music is still his “home base, lauds Bottesini as writing for the bass “in a way that only a remarkable player could have conceived and cites Mozart, Bach and Beethoven as his heroes. “However, he adds, unable to overlook the role of the upright bass in jazz, “I do have hundreds of other musical heroes, and some of them are nonclassical bass players. My father played me a record of Ray Brown when I was a young child and told me that that is how you play the bass. He was right. I could make a list of 50 bass players that have had an impact on me, living and dead, but I am glad that Ron Carter is still alive. Edgar Meyer performs with the New Century Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center. 200 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael. 5pm. $29–$49. 415.392.4400. Gabe Meline
